‘Tradition (Studios) is the illusion of permanence’ Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER

bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PORT ST. LUCIE — Woody Allen’s line “tradition is the illusion of permanence” in the 1997 movie “Deconstructing Harry” seems to be an appropriate quote to make light of Tradition Studios’ woes, as nothing about past promissed deals for the former Digital Domain building has ever resonated with anything permanent. That appropriate sentiment

looks like it will be over. Port St. Lucie City Council made a major vote, Monday, likely ending a tiresome two years trying to find someone to buy Tradition Studios. The council unanimously voted, for its second reading to enter a deal with Jupiter businessman and developer James Hall for a $15 million sale of the former Digital Domain building. “I’m just going to be glad to see this one done,” Vice Mayor Linda Bartz said.

PORT ST. LUCIE — Yet another business the city of Port St. Lucie helped fund is in financial woes. The Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute has about $4 million in loan payments due this year — one for $2.5 million in May and one for $1.5 million in November — but representatives said that could be a problem. Douglas Calder, VGTI execu-

tive director of development and communications, said while the payments might be able to be made, the ability to secure funding from the National Institutes of Health has hurt. “There’s no question VGTI is facing some financial challenges, much like our peers, based on the current NIH funding environment and climate,” Calder said. The institute has undergone a rebranding of sorts to make itself relevant in the industry

Terissa Aronson, the chamber’s president, said, despite the winnings being such an attractive offer, not many accept it. “We’ve always given it to the best of the best. The best of the best graduate with a lot of dualenrollment credits, so we found that we haven’t seen a great deal of them use the scholarship or money,” she said. Students with college credits by the time they graduate high school often have a big leg up on those who don’t, so it’s common to see those students get attractive scholarship offers from bigname colleges and universities, Aronson said. Only 14 percent of winners take advantage of a free IRSC associate degree, most likely opting for one of those more well-known schools, Aronson said. Meanwhile, just about half take the $1,000. Aronson said, if a student accepts the $1,000 from the chamber, then they must notify their future university. The university then factors that into a student’s financial aid package. In the end, the student typically gets less because of an outside scholar-

As a school board member, I saw what need there was for community outreach for our schools, and I think anything that members in the community dedicate their time to in support of young students is an excellent use of our time,” she said. Miller said she’s looking for a student who has selflessly reached out to others in the area. “I want to find a student who has committed to a project over a long period of time,” she said. Does your HOA community perform due diligence? Editor’s note: This is Part 2 of a two-part opinion column. Part 1 was published in the Feb. 27 edition. he Florida Statute referenced previously noted: (See State Statute Section 720.306, paragraph (9)(b). This statute provides the following limitations on who may serve on an HOA board) necessitates that HOA boards perform due diligence in the two areas described. This means that it is necessary to vet existing HOA board members as well as candidates for seats on HOA boards. Florida has not yet established a specific procedure for vetting. Nonetheless, vetting appears at a minimum to include securing criminal background checks for all present and future board members. The process of obtaining the criminal background checks might best be assigned to the community’s management company. It should be performed annually — at the time potential candidates are considering running for membership on the board. This will allow time for potential candidates to withdraw if any do not meet the Florida Statute limitations described above I emailed the Office of Communications, Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, and asked: “Is securing a criminal background check for each board member/candidate the easiest way to vet them? Are there better ways?” William A. Mahmet, public information officer, responded, “I would encourage you to reach out to local law enforcement regarding criminal background checks.”

YOUR

T

Robert Pritchard If a board as a whole, or if individual board members or candidates for board seats do not comply with the Florida law, it may be that someone has something to hide. Given the fiduciary responsibility of the board and its individual members, it appears to be obligatory that board members, and candidates provide evidence that the provisions in the Florida Statutes noted above have been met.

Boards as managers HOA boards are unique in that they are charged to meet the common fiduciary goals of the community members as a whole, and they also must meet the needs of important subgroups. Meeting the common fiduciary goals requires some top-down management. For example, a board usually contracts with a management company that performs a long list of duties.

To meet its fiduciary responsibilities, the board should thoroughly investigate the performance of possible management companies and compare the quoted costs with the goal of obtaining the greatest value for the HOA members’ money. Beyond those activities, however, there are decisions that may impact only a relatively few people in the community. For example, many communities have gyms/ fitness centers. These may be used by relatively few people. Thus, when it is time to replace equipment, it is very important to systematically obtain input from those who use the facility. It is the facility users who collectively should decide what new equipment to purchase and what to retain, etc. Top-down decisionmaking is simply not appropriate. Management needs to establish a formal system for soliciting inputs from those who use the facility, tabulate the results, and then directly involve the facility users in the decisions of the types, quantity and quality of equipment purchased, where it is to be located in the facility, etc. Otherwise, the result may be the acquisition of poorly constructed equipment that is difficult to use or not useable by some members, and likely to break down. Finally, whenever capital expenditures (large or small) are made, post-completion reviews are essential. The board needs to know how the residents rate purchases, renovations, and upgrades. This way, the board can access and continuously improve its decision-making process. If a board does not systematically gather and analyze post-completion audits, it will continue to make non-optimal decisions. Such decisions can result in significant resident complaints; sometimes community pressure may result in work having to be redone, wasting precious community members’ dollars.

Your turn to vet the candidates An effective board is one that works as a team. Although the board will have a chairman/chairwoman/president, that person is really the team leader and often its spokesperson. But an HOA president/chair is not a czar; he or she does not command. As a team leader, this person needs to emphasize inclusiveness and consensus. Every board member’s opinion should be respected. Formation of cliques on boards severely reduces the board’s effec-

tiveness and should be avoided. Every board member needs to be a team player. In his book, “Managing Teams For Dummies,” Marty Brounstein identifies, “Ten Qualities of an Effective Team Player.” Anyone interested in becoming a board member should consider reading the book. At minimum, all HOA residents can benefit by Googling “Ten Qualities of an Effective Team Player.” Then, evaluate board candidates using the 10- point list. This will help you decide who you want managing your HOA community. Now it is your turn to “vet the candidates.” Start by reviewing the characteristics of a team player. Then ask yourself the following questions about each candidate: • Are you comfortable trusting the candidate with your money? Does the candidate have a criminal record? • Can the candidate communicate effectively both orally and in writing? Does she/he listen well, maintaining eye contact? Do you think the candidate really cares about what you think? • What knowledge, skills, and experience — that a board really needs — does the candidate bring to the board? • What motivates the candidate to want to be on the board? Does the candidate really have the best interest of the community at heart or does the candidate really want to be a big fish in a small bowl? • How long has the candidate been a resident of your HOA community? Frequently, candidates will prepare written statements designed to draw you to vote for them. Examine those statements closely. Candidates sometimes tell their life stories in terms of their education, work, and volunteer experiences; others may be very glib. Be wary of those candidates who prepare lengthy statements including minutiae such as where they went to grade school and take credit for a long laundry list of accomplishments. Similarly, be wary of candidates who are very glib. Such a candidate may expect that you already know about her or him, so why bother to take the time repeating it? Written statements are important reflections of how the candidates think. The key questions you should ask when reading a candidate’s statement are: • Did each candidate explain her or his objectives to improve your community (i.e. maximize the value received for every dollar you pay in HOA fees)? • Did the candidate relate how her or his knowledge, skills and experience relate to achieving the objectives? Now that you have completed the

an eating chocolate really be good for your health? There’s evidence pointing to several beneficial results from eating everyone’s favorite sweet, as long as it’s in moderation. It is believed that chocolate may help protect your cardiovascular system, because the cocoa bean from which it is made is rich in a class of plant nutrients called flavanols, a type of flavonoid. Flavonoids help protect plants from environmental toxins and help repair damage. Many medical professionals believe that antioxidants also help the body’s cells resist damage caused by free radicals, which are formed by such normal bodily processes as inhaling environmental contaminants like cigarette smoke. Without enough antioxidants to combat the amount of oxidation that occurs, your body can become damaged by free radicals. Other studies have linked the consumption of chocolate with anti-inflammatory properties, a lower risk of developing heart failure, reduced blood pressure, an inverse relationship in women and stroke and improved function, flexibility and verbal fluency in patients with mild cognitive impairment. Flavanols aren’t only found in chocolate, but also in cranberries, apples, peanuts, onions, tea and red wine. Before you grab a ½-pound Hershey bar or pan full of brownies, it’s important to understand that not all forms of chocolate contain high levels of flavanols. Cocoa naturally has a very strong, pungent taste, which comes from the flavanols, but, when it is made into your favorite chocolate products and processed, it goes through several steps that reduce this taste. And the more it’s processed, the more flavanols are

ST. LUCIE WEST — St. Lucie West native Kyle Kryak shakes his head and rolls his eyes a lot. Sometimes it gives him headaches. It’s not that he’s disappointed or disgusted with anything. He has Tourette’s Syndrome, a neurological condition that manifests itself in vocal tics- which people say certain words, phrases or sounds - or motor tics, which people move or twitch slightly like Kryak does. Many people associate Tourette’s with random cursing. Kryak estimates that only 15 percent of those who have Tourette’s curse. Some surveys have that number lower, at 10 percent. Kryak, an avid cyclist, has been working to educate people about his condition and prove to young people that it’s not something they should use as ammo to bully their peers with.

Photo courtesy of Kyle Kryak As customary with coast-to-coast cycling trips, Kyle Kryak dips his tire in the water at Jacksonville Beach Jan. 2 before setting off on his 46-day trip to Ventura, Calif. Last month, he wrapped up a 46day bike tour across the southern United States, raising $3,550 for the Tourette Syndrome Association. “I had this idea four years ago to bike across the U.S., and I originally had the intention of just

doing this to see California for the first time … about two years into it, I decided to do it for charity,” he said. “I decided to do it for Tourette’s because I don’t think it gets enough attention.”

There was some concern at the last meeting as to whether Hall would live up to his end of the deal and establish his company, Legacy TSP LLC, before Monday’s deadline. Evidently, the council was content with what Hall brought to the table. The deal won’t go into effect until March 23, however. City attorney Pam Booker said the change was made so Hall could have some time to liquidate some assets and secure the funds. There was some discussion as to whether the council should pull the item for its next

meeting, but, instead, the motion was amended to reflect a March 23 effective date. Hall had won the right to negotiate a contract over three other potential owners. The final purchase price is $15 million, $2.3 million more than the city’s initial minimum request, and a $200,000 deposit to be paid five days after an agreement was made. There’s also a 30-day inspection period and a 60-day closing period. If Hall pulls out of the deal within the first 60 days, he will get $185,000 of his $200,000 back. The $15,000 remaining would go to the city.

and more marketable to NIH and other financial sources. Prior to 2013, VGTI had primarily been an HIV research-based institution, Calder said. “In terms of rebranding the institute and the new centers for diseases and aging, we’ve made ourselves much more relevant to our community, and we’ve made ourselves more relevant to the state in terms of targeting cancer, neurodegenerative disease, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease and autoimmune disease.” Calder said VGTI’s relevancy is proven by a partnership with the Karolinska Institute, a Swedish medical university that accounts for 40 percent of all medical research in Sweden. The Karolinska Institute has been around for 205 years and has a committee that has given out the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for the past 105. “They could have signed a partnership with anyone … and they chose VGTI to have a U.S. presence on the Treasure Coast,” Calder said. Despite having problems securing funding, Calder said it was easier to get the little funding they could after reinventing VGTI. If VGTI had remained solely an HIV research center, its cash flow would have been tapped earlier, he said. “No question it would have happened sooner,” he said. Port St. Lucie city manager Jeff Bremer said VGTI officials have been in contact with city staff for about a year regarding its financial situation. “That communication is centered on their efforts to reinvent themselves, find new partners and alternative sources of funding and to be able to provide a sustainable operation and facility in the city of Port St. Lucie.” Bremer said the city is considered a co-holder of the mortgage, which is why the city and VGTI have been communicating. If VGTI fails to pay its bills, then

city is stuck with paying. “A failure on their part would then add to our current list of failed or failing economic investments,” Bremer said. Worst-case scenario, the city would have to shoulder an extra $4.2 million per year on top of the $6.2 million it pays for other failed investments, including the City Center, Torrey Pines Institute and Digital Domain. The total on the city’s debt service is more than $444 million, Bremer said. In 2010, the city issued $64 million in bonds to draw the institute to the city. Bremer said VGTI officials had not requested any financial help from the city as of March 5. Calder said VGTI officials are undergoing negotiations with university officials to discuss potential mergers, which would decrease the institute’s need to rely on NIH grants. “We are in the process of creating a new dynamic, a new paradigm for a research institute, so that we can create new sources of funding and ensure our sustainability, regardless of the funding problem,” he said. Bremer said the city’s investment in the biotech industry was solid, based on an industry that was thriving before nation’s economic meltdown in 2007. But, Bremer said it’s not likely that city officials will try to lure businesses by offering the same incentives that leave the city on the hook if the venture fails. “I think we will try to rely on more traditional forms of funding,” he said, citing providing tax incentives as one example. Mayor Greg Oravec said he doesn’t think VGTI is absolutely set to fail, though it has a tough road ahead. Despite the setbacks among Port St. Lucie’s biotechnical institutes, Oravec said there won’t necessarily be a shift away from the industry. “We are working with the ones we already have to leverage,” he

Master Jeweler and Gemologist

Terry Rieger’s 40 year career had an unusual beginning. As a traditional artist in her early 20’s, Terry’s culinary hobby provided an additional outlet for display of her artistic talent. She delighted in designing confectionery masterpieces. If she wasn’t creating exquisitely decorated wedding cakes for friends and family, she was sculpting whimsical, mouthwatering candies, or designing sugar Easter eggs with complete 3-D panoramas inside. The occupants of those windowed eggs were meticulously detailed, right down to microscopic whiskers on the tiny Easter bunnies. One of those Easter eggs, a gift to a family friend, is responsible for launching her lifelong career in jewelry. The family friend was a jeweler, and so taken with her artistry was he, that he insisted her designs must be produced in gold. Her mentor, refusing to take no for an answer, arranged for a full compliment of jewelers tools to be delivered, and arranged for her to be the first and only student even tutored by noted Russian jeweler Constance Osmanski. Terry found herself commuting back and forth to Europe for the next twelve years, studying and perfecting her craft in London’s famed diamond quarter, Hatton Garden. The inspiration for the Forget Me Not line of jewelry started a year and a half ago, Terry was moved at a Luncheon for Alzheimer’s and wanted to do something wonderful for her friend, Diane Black, who worked for Alzheimer’s Community Care. Diane was the chairperson for the luncheon and her mother has been stricken by Alzheimer’s. So Terry designed the Forget Me Not for her. Diane has helped Terry promote the For get me not line world wide so we will

never forget.

He also has a younger sister who has Tourette’s, so the cause more than hits home. He set off from Jacksonville Beach to avoid the Florida panhandle on Jan. 2, about a month after graduating from the University of Miami with a bachelor’s degree in geography, and set his sights on Ventura, Calif., to see if that’s where he wanted to start a new chapter in life. “I didn’t want to give myself time to second-guess it,” he said. He planned the route himself, avoiding popular routes shared by other cyclists. “Being a geography major, you can get away with that,” he said. Rest spots were also a big consideration. He either stayed in motel rooms or used a website called warmshowers.org, a site traveling cyclists use to find places to stay, to find a host for a night. His first day, he made an 80-mile trek before calling it a day in Lake City. Sticking to main highways most of the way, Kryak biked for about six or seven hours each day. He only took six total rest days throughout the trip. He cycled through areas he’d never seen, enduring both hot and cold weather. The coldest area was in Niceville, Fla., at 19 degrees, and the hottest spot was Fort Stockton, Texas, at about 85 degrees. “There’s a real wow factor. Also not just seeing it, but cycling it,”

he said. “Overall the scenery in general was just incredible to see. I would say I went through all four seasons.” The sheer experience of going across the country was rewarding, but the magnitude of what he was doing hit him when he first saw mountains along the trip in Fort Stockton. “I started getting a lot of that Texas American-Western atmosphere. I saw some amazing cliffs and mesas and went through the deserts in New Mexico,” he said. “It really gave me just a sense of accomplishment.” It wasn’t easy getting to Fort Stockton, though. During his 107mile ride to get there from Ozona, Texas, he had three flat tires in about two hours. “I had a meltdown,” he said. “I thought this was going to be it, but I got through it and made the rest of the trip without any flats.” More grueling days followed after, climbing at elevations he had never trained for before. The most drastic change in elevation he’d gone up was 300 feet, but he was now traversing 6,000-foot mountains. “Your body changes, and you really get this adrenaline rush,” he said. The next big hurdle was overcoming a mechanical issue. Just 15 miles after crossing the California border, one of his tire spokes broke. “In some bikes, if you break a

KRYAK from page A18 spoke, you can have enough equilibrium to keep going, but I didn’t have enough, so I had to stop at a bike shop,” he said. The spokes at the shop were too short, so he was stuck. He got lucky, though. A California high patrolman stopped and gave him a ride to another shop 60 miles away. The shop had what he needed, and the two made their way back to where Kryak left off. With three hours shaved off his timeline and 93 miles to go, Kryak rode into the night to reach his destination — Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Another day of climbing mountains and one day of mostly downhill riding were all that remained. Kryak reached Ventura on Feb. 15 and spent two weeks checking the area out to see if it’s a good fit for him. He applied for some positions as a geographic information systems analyst, but is really banking on attending graduate school at either UCLA or USC to study urban planning. (What does he eventually want to do with his life?) While he pursues his career, Kryak said he’s always tried to help others understand his condition. “What I’m trying to tell people

is ‘Hi, I have Tourette’s. Nice to meet you. I’m not going to swear at you.’ The dual side of that is to inspire youth, particularly the demographic of elementary school children,” he said. “I was bullied a lot in middle school, and that went away mostly in high school … Kids are going to be kids. That’s just a part of life. The idea is not to change everyone, but to get kids to have an understanding of what it is. Because, if you give them that early exposure, you can sway some of those who are on the fence or easily swayed,” he said. Over time, Kryak said he learned to suppress his tics, as if he

were holding in a sneeze, so they wouldn’t affect him. It was more of a way to cope with his condition than anything, he said. During his stay, he spoke to children at an elementary school where a boy named Jackson had Tourette’s and explained that a condition doesn’t define someone. “What I tried to tell the kids is, look at Jackson. He has Tourette’s, and he’s cool. It’s not about these things. It’s what we do that matters.” To read more about Kryak’s trip, go to his blog at kyletocal.blogspot. com. Peripheral Neuropathy WARNING The treatment to increase blood flow utilizes a specialized low level light therapy (not to be confused with laser therapy) using light emitting diode technology. This technology was originally developed by NASA to assist in increasing blood flow.

Port St. Lucie, FL — The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Neurontin, and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects. Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. As you can see in Figure 2, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning and many additional symptoms.

The low level light therapy is like watering a plant. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a plant and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper.

Figure 2: When these very small blood vessels become diseased they begin to shrivel up and the nerves begin to degenerate. three factors must be determined. 1) What is the underlying cause? 2) How Much Nerve Damage Has Been Sustained. NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is likely nothing that we can do for you. 3) How much treatment will your condition require?

The treatment that is provided at our clinic has three main goals: 1) Increase blood flow 2) Stimulate small fiber nerves 3) Decrease brain-based pain

The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage there is hope! Dr. John Silva, D.C. at the Neuropathy Relief Center will conduct a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy. The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here in Port St. Lucie that offers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (see the special neuropathy severity examination at the end of this article) In order to effectively treat your neuropathy,

He tried to break into a safe, but failed and left the restaurant. Officers discovered that the man pried open a rear door to get into the building. Finding out what that new industry will be may be the issue.

Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer. Symptoms usually appear in the latest stages, when it is the deadliest. Low-dose CT lung cancer screening programs for current and former smokers can detect lung cancer at the earliest stages before symptoms appear, improving the cure rate to as high as 90 percent. – Martin Health System is now offering a low-dose CT screening test for only $99 for those at high risk.

TRADITION — Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies is pleased to welcome the newest collaborators to the Florida Drug Discovery Acceleration Program. Chad Dickey, Ph.D., associate professor with the Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute within USF Health is the 40th principal investigator within Florida to join the Florida Drug Discovery Acceleration Program. Dickey’s research is focused on more than 15 neurological diseases, collectively termed “tauopathies” which includes Alzheimer’s disease. Dickey’s lab is also working in the areas of glaucoma and depression. Appu Rathinavelu, Ph.D., executive director, Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research at Nova Southeastern University, associate dean, Institutional Planning and Development, and Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, becomes the 41st principal investigator in the Florida Drug Discovery Acceleration Program. Since 1992, Rathinavelu has been involved in cancer research, focusing today on new cancer therapeutics and diagnostic methods for breast, lung, pancreatic and colorectal cancers. Rathinavelu’s lab is also studying gene defects and cellular mechanisms that enhance metastasis and increase drug resistance. The Florida Drug Discovery Acceleration Program allows Torrey Pines Institute to share its large

collection of compound libraries and associated screening technologies to Florida Institutions to accelerate drug discovery and commercialization statewide. Since July 1, 2013, the program has been funded by the state of Florida and administered through the Florida Department of Health. With the addition of these two collaborators, the Florida Drug Discovery Acceleration Program now includes 41 principal investigators from 15 Florida Institutes. The Florida Drug Discovery Acceleration Program is investigating 54 unique, biological targets with the potential to identify hit compounds for development into therapeutics to treat human, animal, and agricultural diseases. To date one patent application has been filed and over $10 million in joint grant proposals have been submitted. Two grants have recently been funded, $800,000 for two years from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to Christopher Cogle, M.D., at the University of Florida and $1.8 million for five years from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to Barry Rosen, Ph.D., at Florida International University. Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies is a nonprofit institute dedicated to conducting basic research to advance the understanding of human disease and the improvement of human health. Silly ‘Sisters’ take stage at IRSC Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — There’s still time for ‘Nunsense’ this spring. Students at Indian River State College will present the comic musical March 26-29 at the McAlpin Fine Arts Center. For anyone not familiar with the singing Sisters, the show began as a line of greeting cards. Dan Goggin’s cards about an acerbic nun with a quick wit caught on, and he expanded them into a cabaret show. In 1985, that show was expanded to a full-length production that became the off-Broadway hit, “Nunsense.” It went on to become the second-longest-running show in off-Broadway history and has been performed around the world. “Nunsense” tells the story of the five surviving Little Sisters of Hoboken, who discover that their cook, Sister Julia Child of God, accidentally killed the other residents with tainted vichyssoise. They decide to stage a variety show to pay for burials. David Moberg heads IRSC’s performing and visual arts

TREASURE COAST — The songs for which singer/songwriter Janis Ian is best known, Society’s Child” and “At Seventeen,” are as relevant today as they were when they were written. The first deals with the difficulties of interracial dating and the second with what it’s like to be outside the popular group when you’re different — or think you are. The Grammy-winning artist will appear at the Emerson Center with her friend Tom Paxton on April 10 as part of the Masters of Music series. Ian, a New Jersey native, began taking piano lessons as a young child and, by the time she was a teen, played the organ, harpsichord, French horn, flute and guitar. She wrote her first song, “Hair of Spun Gold,” when she was 12. It was published in the

NUNSENSE from page B1 department and is directing the musical. He spoke recently about why he chose the show to end the drama season. “Two big things drove it,” he said. “It has a small cast and that gives maximum exposure and attention to a smaller group. Audiences tend to love it. I’ve done it twice in the summer but never in season. It’s silly and goofy and fun. It’s nice to go to a joyful rehearsal.” In February, IRSC students presented “Damn Yankees,” and it is unusual for them to present another musical in season. “I wanted to do a second musical,” Moberg said. “This is small enough.” The cast includes Michael Edward Hurst as Sister Mary Regina, the Mother Superior (and no, that’s not a misprint) Reyna Uc-Rose as Sister Mary Hubert, Mistress of Novices; Lindsey Grace as Sister Mary Amnesia; Jessica Lesko as Sister Robert Anne; and Jordan St. Germain as Sister Mary Leo. Moberg’s thoughts have already turned to summer. “I’m looking for a new show to do in the black box theater,”

he said. “I’ve been in contact with a playwright to ask her to do a show. She has a couple of brand new ones, and she’s going to email them. I’ll see if they meet my needs. It would be a workshop production. I’m also looking at ‘God of Carnage,’ because it can be done in a black box and because of the setting and cast size.” Moberg likes having the freedom of the black box theater. “It’s a small, intimate theater space,” he said. “There is variable seating and a variable relationship from the stage to the audience. In traditional theater design, the setting is to fit the theater. In a black box, the theater is to fit the play. It gives flexibility, and it’s really cool. Usually the audience-actor relationship is far more intimate. The focus is on the actors. The audience is not distracted by other technical stuff.” IRSC presents the musical “Nunsense” March 26-29 at the McAlpin Fine Arts Center, 3209 Virginia Ave., Fort Pierce. Tickets are $15 for non-subscribers and $10 for subscription holders. Call the box office at 1 (800) 220-9915 or visit www.irsc.edu.

folk magazine “Broadside,” and that led to a performance at a weekly hootenanny at the famed Village Gate, where she met Paxton. In a phone interview, he recalled the meeting. “Janis sat between Len Chandler and me,” he said, “We adopted her. She was a little drink of water from New Jersey. We made her sing another song. We loved her. She became a star a year later.” Ian won Grammy Awards for “At Seventeen,” and again, in 2013 for Best Spoke World Album for her autobiography, “Society’s Child.” She recently spoke by phone about her career and the concert tour she’s been on with Paxton. Ian said her writing has always been for more than a brief moment. “As a writer, I tried to be universal,” she said. “I listened to Gershwin and Mercer. They wrote for more than their own culture or group. Art is supposed to transcend those things, and hopefully it’s still relevant today.” Ian also recalled that night at the Village Gate when she met Paxton. Those epic hootenannies were filled with people who came to define folk music, including Phil Ochs, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Judy Collins. “I’d written ‘Hair of Spun Gold,’ and sent it into ‘Broadside,’ Ian said. “They asked me to come to the hootenanny, and my father said I was only 13. They asked ‘Can you drive her in?’ Because I’d always wanted to do music and wanted to write, they assumed I was going to be good, that I’d be successful. I had great parents.” Her parents were such a great influence that Ian began the Pearl Foundation, named after her mother, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1975. Ian and her brother convinced their mother to follow her dream of going to college and her moth-

er enrolled in Goddard College’s adult education program. After her mother’s death, Ian began the Pearl Foundation to raise money for older continuing education students. Ian is also a fan of science fiction and has written short stories in the genre. “It’s like jazz,” she said. “It’s the cutting edge. It deals in the possible and the improbable and asks a lot of questions I would ask. It takes no prisoners. My brother and I grew up on it. My father read Poe.” Ian was the first musical guest on a new show in 1975 called “Saturday Night Live.” George Carlin also appeared. She said that it was great to be part of something that was cutting edge, but that most of the regulars had no idea it would last for more than a short time. “It was great to be part of something that would still be running or be viable,” she said. She and Paxton decided to reunite for this concert, in part because Paxton wanted to spend less time on the road. “I said, ‘Wait, before you retire, try a real show, singing each others songs, with both of us on stage. We started three years ago and brought in Robin Bullock for three-part harmonies. We’ve been thrilled with the response. “Tom sings my songs, and I sing his ‘Redemption Road.’ It annoys me I didn’t write it. We’re on stage together 80 percent. We’re old friends, which really helps. We’ve spent time in each other’s homes and this is two friends on stage. We’ve spent our lives as solo performers. For us, it’s a whole lot more fun.” Janis Ian and Tom Paxton appear at the Emerson Center, 1590 27th Ave., Vero Beach, April 10 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $40-$75. Call the box office at (772) 7785249 or order online at www. TheEmersonCenter.org. Next week: an interview with Tom Paxton.

RUSTICO from page B12 with pork and steak and other hot sandwiches like cubano and media noche. Rústico will also offer tasty Puerto Rican pastries, alcapurrias and balalaítios. And who can’t resist a homemade tres leches or a sweet cheese flan for dessert? Everything is homemade with lots of love like your abuela

(grandmother) would make it, all with a Latin flavor cuisine. Rústico will be proudly serving their family private coffee label, Café Lareño, the best-tasting coffee from the owners’ family’s fifth generation of coffee growers. Lareño coffee is cultivated in the mountainous region of Lares, Puerto Rico, a region well known for the cultivation of great Arabica coffee. A grain of great quality with all the superb properties to produce a rich coffee in aroma and flavor and is harvested in this region. The owners, Ruth Lopez and

Humberto Torres, have worked very hard to create a very unique rustic and warm atmosphere. Rústico has warm touches everywhere you look and hand-painted furniture by family. Rustic wood pallet walls, hand-designed seating for breakfast and lunch at arti-

san wood tables and burlap coffee bean bag-covered chairs, create an inviting atmosphere. One of the main features is a unique banquet table in the middle of the room for large parties, seating up to 18 guests, great for office lunches and private affairs. Please join the owners and staff for the grand opening celebration Thursday, March 19. Rústico is located at 1724 St. Lucie West Blvd., St. Lucie West. Physicians Immediate Care celebrating 12 years serving the Treasure Coast

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE WEST — Physicians Immediate Care, the leading brand of independent, physician-owned neighborhood urgent care clinics, is celebrating 12 years of proudly serving the Treasure Coast. Kenneth J. Palestrant, M.D., CEO and medical director of Physicians Immediate Care had been an emergency department physician and director of St. Lucie Medical Center emergency department for many years

and recognized a high volume of patients were presenting to the emergency department with non-emergent illness and injury. With no urgent care centers in the area he saw a need to offer walk-in medical care for acute illness or injury as a viable alternative to being treated in a hospital emergency room. In February 2003, Palestrant founded the first Physicians Immediate Care urgent care clinic on eastern Port St. Lucie Boule-

In the ensuing decade, Palestrant opened two more urgent care centers in Port St. Lucie, one in Fort Pierce and one in Jensen Beach, offering the same convenient, quality care to residents all along the Treasure Coast. Physicians Immediate Care also offers occupational services for workers compensation, routine exams, drug and alcohol testing, as well as primary care services to thousands of St Lucie County and Martin County employers and residents. “Despite the numerous other walk-in facilities which now dot

the area, Physicians Immediate Care has continued to provide the highest quality medical care to the residents of the Treasure Coast. Physicians Immediate Care plans continued expansion and growth in the region in the near future.” Palestrant said. Physicians Immediate Care was the first true urgent care provider in Port St Lucie and remains the premier access care facility locally owned and operated by a physician. PGA Golf Club husband and wife team record holes-in-one an hour apart on the Ryder Course band, John, a 69-year-old family physician, used an 8-iron from 140 yards to register his 16th career ace. “It’s the most remarkable thing that I have seen in my 44 years in golf,” said Paul Rudeen, the PGA director of Instruction at Ocean Edge Resort & Club in Brewster, Mass., who witnessed the Pagana magic. “Barb was struggling with proper weight shift before her tee shot, and I told her not to hang too long on her left side. The next thing you know she hit the ball,

and it went into the hole. “When we got to No. 12, Barb and I watched John one-hop his ball into the hole. I was getting really excited and John took it all in stride. It was just unbelievable.” Barbara Pagana celebrated her 66th birthday a day earlier and it was just over a week since she wrapped up her sixth consecutive Ladies Club Championship at PGA Golf Club. She shot a 71 Friday. “It’s exciting any time you get a hole-in-one, no matter how many you have,” said Barbara. “Once we got to the clubhouse, we decided to buy drinks for PGA Golf

Club members. We haven’t seen the tab yet!” John Pagana, a longtime tennis player before taking up golf at age 38, said, “I knew that I would never get to see my wife if I couldn’t play golf. Today was so special. I can’t answer why we have been so blessed with holesin-one. The Lord takes you where your heart is. For us, it is being outside and enjoying this game.” The Pagana holes-in-one are the second aces by a husband-wife duo at PGA Golf Club in the past year. However, Marie and Pete Della Rosa of Port St. Lucie, posted their first aces a month, from May to June 2014, on the respective fifth holes of the Ryder and Wanamaker courses.
