TREASURE COAST — Ink on President Barack Obama’s $3.9 trillion 2015 fiscal budget barely dried before news spread on the Treasure Coast that Obama granted full funding for construction of Martin County’s C-44 project which will help filter filthy Lake Okeechobee discharges before the water reaches the fragile Indian River Lagoon. The $38 million to complete Phase 1 and 2 of the project was the full funding the Army Corps requested, said U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Jupiter. The freshman Treasure Coast congressman brought the lagoon’s plight to the forefront in Washington, D.C., during an October congressional hearing attended by hundreds of concerned area residents and more than 20 members of the U.S. Congress and Senate. “This is a really big win despite the tough fiscal times and despite all the calls up here to slash spending,” Murphy said during a March 5 press call. “The president basically singled out

Another.... “Mutter Moment”

Helen G. Eaton From the age of about five or six, I have been completely deaf in my right ear. From what I understand, it had something to do with measles. While some might find a half-deaf child pitiful, let me assure you, I never once cried myself to sleep over it. You see, when you’ve been without one ear the vast majority of your life you don’t miss it. Having had no memory of perfect hearing, I had long accepted far less than perfect hearing as normal. Alas, my left ear is not perfect either. However, it has done the “heavy lifting” for all things audible in my life since I was in the single digits and I’ve considered it sufficient for decades. Deafness is a funny thing...unlike losing our sight or our ability to walk, those of us who can’t hear don’t realize we can’t. When you can’t see, you walk into walls. When you can’t walk, you fall down. It’s pretty cut and dry as to what the problem is, even to the one with the problem. With hearing, however, we hard-of-hearing folks blame everyone else. “Speak up! Stop mumbling! It’s too crowded in here, I can’t hear anything!” What’s worse, our friends and family get annoyed with us. They say they get tired of repeating things. Well, if they’d just look at us, enunciate properly, and speak the heck up, there’d be no problem, right? Right? Oh...I’m sorry. Is my TV too loud?

After years of lamenting the decline of society’s speech skills, it dawned on me that perhaps...just perhaps...the problem was in the mirror and not in those who surrounded me. It was becoming more and more evident that the belief that my good ear was compensating sufficiently for my bad ear was a faulty one.

At that point, I decided to lay the blame squarely on my “bad” ear and look into a cochlear implant. I had researched them just enough to make me dangerous, and realized that the first step on this journey would be to get a hearing test and a consultation. I made an appointment with a local hearing center, Mutter’s Hearing Center in St. Lucie West, and the ensuing experience changed my life.

He does not promise you that they will change your world. He does, however, talk straight to you. He takes time to analyze your unique situation and is very serious about coming up with the best solution for you. He asks pointed questions, gets to the root of your issue, and makes his recommendation based on your specific needs. As someone who abhors sales pitches, this is quite refreshing. I feel like I am dealing with someone honest and straightforward, and have never once felt “pushed” into anything.

Upon my arrival, I sat down with Joe Mutter, a polite, friendly hearing aid specialist who asked me lots of questions and listened closely to my concerns. After an initial examination of my inner ear (which I was able to see as well on his monitor, and let me assure you… you have not lived until you actually get to see your own eardrum), he took me into a booth to have a hearing test. The hearing test was very comprehensive, not only testing my ability to hear various pitches and tones, but also testing my speech recognition. Since I had been having conversations with people my entire life, I presumed I would pass that part with flying colors. Wrong. While my results weren’t horrible, they made me realize that I didn’t always hear things correctly in conversation…which would explain the puzzled looks I’d get from people sometimes when responding to their questions. After all my testing was through, Joe sat me down and gave me a thorough explanation of what a cochlear implant entailed, and the degree of hearing loss most people need to have to be eligible for one. Since I did not suffer from overall profound hearing loss, a cochlear implant would be not only overkill, but prohibitively expensive. He suggested I try a hearing aid in my “good” ear first to see how I fared. Now, when most of us think of hearing aids, we envision great-grandpa wearing these big, bulky things that stick out of the ears, make whistling noises, and generally contribute overall to the “elderly” stereotype. Since I am in my forties (and pushing fifty), the last thing I wanted was to be associated with was something to make me appear older. Imagine my surprise and delight to see that hearing aids these days are (dare I say it) downright cool-looking! Joe showed me a variety of styles…all of which are virtually invisible when looking at someone straight on. I made my selection, and Joe fitted me with it, demonstrating the proper way to insert it, change the battery, etc.

That being said, once this hearing aid was nestled into my ear, no amount of selling was necessary. My world was transformed. You may wonder how someone who could already hear “okay” could possibly be so affected by what would seem like just a slight boost in audio. Well, let me explain something…a hearing aid is not simply a device that increases volume. Those cheap things advertised on TV do that. A real hearing aid has the technology to make sounds sharper and crisper without necessarily making them louder. In fact, my hearing aid has the capacity to bring down the background noise in a crowded room while bringing the voices I’m trying to hear to the forefront! I have no earthly clue how, but it does. I have a little remote control that gives me the ability to adjust my hearing aid to the environment I’m in at the time, allowing me much greater control over how I hear things in various situations. Those of you with perfect hearing take this for granted…its like breathing for you. But trust me when I say that

“When I experienced this for the first time, it almost brought me to tears”. Even though I thought I could hear, I had no idea what I was missing. I have had my hearing aid for almost two years now and wearing it is part of my daily routine, like brushing my teeth. Unlike brushing my teeth though, it is not a mindless chore. Without fail, every time I put my hearing aid in it is akin to the way Dorothy felt in the Wizard of Oz when she stepped out of her black and white world into a world of color. I hear “in color” now…and I am forever grateful.

New head of development council charts course PORT ST. LUCIE — Peter Tesch, the new president of the Economic Development Council of St. Lucie County, has been coming to Florida since 1969. The Wisconsin native’s father was in the military, and one of his postings was at MacDill Air Force Base. Tesch received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Florida State before taking positions in business, government and economic development. The new executive director served as president and CEO of Ocala/Marion County Economic Development Corporation from 1997-2012 and was also the president of Peterson Hill Partners, an economic development, consultation and site selection firm. He assumed his new post in January and spoke recently about what he hopes to accomplish. “The Economic Development Council is all about helping businesses expand and creating quality job opportunities,” he said. “Part of the strategy the EDC

would be on lighter, cleaner manufacturing. We’re completing a target industry study. One possibility is aviation. We have existing suppliers and aviation component manufacturing in the region.” Agricultural technology is another portion of the manufacturing sector that shows promise. “The state of Florida and south Florida are big producers of agricultural products,” he said. “What type of value-added products and research could come out of that? It could be in biotechnology or alternate energy.” Medical device manufacturing is yet another area where Tesch believes St. Lucie County is a good fit. “We have research institutes and some existing industry in the state,” he said. “It makes sense. Florida and south Florida have a lot of people who are ‘chronologically gifted.’ We have world-class researchers and scientist and investigators working on age-related diseases. Many companies in the health science industry are taking note of what’s happening here.” Distribution and logistics is another area where Tesch sees growth.

wants to embark upon is selling an economic growth strategy for the community. How can we support businesses in the community and create jobs? How can we attract other employers that would create those opportunities with higher wages and better employment opportunities?” Tesch is impressed with the atmosphere he finds in the area, particularly with the biotechnology and medical companies that have established themselves in the county. “One thing that is amazing as a newcomer is how highly collaborative the research institutes and hospital are,” he said. “It’s fertile ground for opportunities for business. (Trying to) retain what we have and create more opportunism is very exciting.” While the idea of a Research Coast on the Treasure Coast is appealing, Tesch considers others sectors equally interesting. One is manufacturing, “While it’s a small portion of our economic output, it does offer a lot of good-paying jobs,” he said. “It’s starting to revitalize and St. Lucie County would be a competitive place to have more. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Clerk of the Circuit Court Joe Smith presented a check Tuesday for $152,767.28 to the St. Lucie County Commission. The funds were accrued by simply paying county invoices by credit card and earning cash back rewards. Since 2011, the award-winning credit card rebate program has raised $387,786.35 in new revenue for taxpayers. Paying invoices by credit card rather than cutting and mailing checks allows county vendors to get paid more quickly and efficiently. Credit card payments have also saved upwards of $325,000 in operating, printing and mailing costs since it was implemented in April 2011. “As good stewards of your tax dollars, the clerk’s office is always seeking ways to reduce costs and save money,” Smith said. “This new revenue complements the $2.43 million in excess fees we gave to the state and county last October.” The cash back funds are distributed by Wells Fargo following the end of each fiscal year. The clerk’s office received cash back at a rate of 1.15 to 1.45 percent

of the total amount of all transactions processed during the 2013 fiscal year, which ran from Oct. 1, 2012 to Sept. 30, 2013. The funds are collected by Wells Fargo bank and redeemed annually. As the county’s chief financial officer, the clerk is responsible for processing and auditing all county bills. Last year, the clerk’s office received the 2013 Achievement Award by the National Association of Counties for the Wells Fargo Credit Card Rebate Program. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Andrew and Carl are friendly young adults, Mistique and Kovu are quiet middle-agers, and Zen is an older Himalayan boy. There is one thing, however, that all of these felines share-they are all infected with the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, also known as Feline AIDS — a virus which often prevents otherwise adoptable shelter cats from finding loving homes. Andrew and his feline pals are not alone. According to the Cornell University Feline Health Center website, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is a retrovirus which affects as many as 28 million cats in the United States. The virus is spread from cat to cat by deep bite wounds, and primarily affects unneutered male cats which live outside and fight for territory. FIV can also be transmitted sexually,

by blood transfusion, and, rarely, from infected mother cats to nursing kittens. Until a few years ago, most veterinarians recommended euthanasia for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus-positive cats. That protocol, however, is changing. “I don’t put AIDS cats to sleep,” said Dr. Sara Mathews of Dr. Dan’s Animal Hospital in Vero Beach. Dr. Mathews explained that while about 10 percent of stray or feral males which she treats are Feline Immunodeficiency Virus positive, once these cats are neutered, they stop fighting for territory, and therefore, do not infect other cats. Stuart, said that AIDS cats pose no threat to humans, dogs, or other species. “FIV is a cats-only infection,” said Dr. Bressman. “Humans cannot be infected with FIV.” Bressman added that even though the AIDS virus makes infected cats more susceptible to contracting other diseases, that many cats do not have symptoms for years after infection, saying, “Many cats can literally outlive the true disease.” The public’s attitude toward feline AIDS is changing as well-albeit slowly. Lauren Anderson of Port St. Lucie agreed that with an indoor lifestyle, AIDS cats can live normal healthy lives. Anderson, who has adopted three Feline Immunodeficiency Virus-positive cats from Dogs & Cats since 2008,

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Luz Ma Camacho was delighted to represent Learn to Read St. Lucie County as the first recipient of the Dyer Difference Award in St. Lucie County. The director of the literacy program for adults, Camacho is also one of the organization’s success stories. English is not Camacho’s native language, and she took advantage of the volunteer tutoring, computer services, and educational opportunities available through Learn to Read St. Lucie County. When she learned about the Dyer Difference Award, she immediately sat down and nominated her own organization to be considered for the $3,000 award. Learn to Read St. Lucie County’s application was considered, along with a number of others which were submitted by some of the area’s non-profit organizations. Instead of making the decision themselves, the owners of Dyer Chevrolet in Fort Pierce tasked their staff members with meeting, becoming familiar with the organizations that had been nominated, and selecting the non-profit organization or group which they felt deserved and needed the award. TRADITION — A seasonal Port St. Lucie resident died last week in Tradition after being involved in a single-car crash. The accident happened during the early morning hours of March 5, Port St. Lucie Police spokesman Master Sgt. Frank Sabol said. The police investigation revealed Kevin Mason, 44, who lives in Canada part of the year, was driving a green 2002 Toyota Siena minivan west on Southwest Tradition Parkway. As Mason approached the roundabout at the intersection of Southwest Community Boulevard, he failed

to follow the road, causing him to enter the roundabout, sending the van airborne, Sabol said. The van struck a Phoenix sylvestris palm tree, then rolled one time, partially ejecting Mason from the vehicle. Mason, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene, Sabol said. Although the investigation is still ongoing, investigators suspect alcohol was involved. Mason’s family told police that Mason left home at approximately 1 a.m. to get something to eat, Sabol said. Speed may have also been a factor, Sabol said. “It looked like he was doing a good rate of speed,” Sabol said. Mason’s death is the first traffic fatality at the Tradition roundabout, Sabol said.

this project as a priority item.” The C-44 Reservoir and Stormwater Treatment Area, located in Southern Martin County, is a 12,000-acre above-ground water storage reservoir that will eventually hold and clean water discharged from Lake Okeechobee. Phase 2 of the project consists of constructing the reservoir and its seepage canals, discharge tower and canal and pumping station. Funding should be awarded by next summer. Phase two is expected to be completed by 2020. Phase 3 includes the construction of stormwater treatment area distribution canals and collection canals. The project’s last phase includes a communications tower and support buildings. The total cost for the C-44 Reservoir and Stormwater Treatment Area project is $405 million. The entire Indian River Lagoon South Project is scheduled to be completed in 2045, depending on funding, Army Corps spokeswoman Jenn Miller said. The project’s total cost is projected at $2.4 billion, Miller said. Treasure Coast clean water advocates, also known as “River Warriors,” rejoiced at the news. “It’s very rewarding to know that all of our efforts have been recognized,” said Nyla Pipes, Port St. Lucie resident and cofounder of One Florida Foundation, a clean water nonprofit. “It’s wonderful that so much funding for the C-44 has been made a priority in the president’s budget. We will be paying careful attention and do what we can to support Congressman Murphy as this moves forward. There may be another bus trip to Washington, D.C., in the near future.” Stuart resident Michelle Roberts said she was overjoyed by the announcement. “I was on Cloud nine yesterday after hearing the news. We are all very encouraged with the support coming from the president. Although it represents a small

portion of what needs to be done, it is a step in the right direction,” Roberts said. “After our trip to D.C. with Congressman Murphy, I hope that they understand the serious problem plaguing our area and pass this funding. To finally get some federal recognition of the problems in our area is wonderful. We will continue our mission to demand clean water for our area and the state of Florida.” The president’s pledge is a big success, but more work lies ahead, Palm City resident and river advocate Darrell Brand said. “The federal funding for the C-44 is great news. I am proud of the hard work that all the River Warriors have done. This has been a real team effort,” Brand said. “Just everyday people, working for a common cause. I feel we have done our part; now let the politicians do their job and get it done. They still need to vote this budget into law. I will celebrate when I see that part accomplished.” “The C-44 is an important part of the puzzle – let’s not forget the C-23 and C-24 canals. A tremendous amount of pollutants are entering the estuary at these points,” Brand added. “We need to continue to explore all ideas that will accomplish our goal of clean water for everyone. There is not just one fix. The River Warriors’ voices are getting louder than ever.” The line item must now pass through the U.S. House Energy and Water Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over Army Corps projects. It’s up to the subcommittee to now draft its own appropriations bill. Murphy is encouraging Treasure Coast residents to contact members of the subcommittee, which include former area politician U.S. Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Okeechobee. “They will hopefully take this line item from the president’s budget and understand what a priority it is,” Murphy said.

ST. LUCIE WEST — It’s been touted as a Godsend diet for people struggling with losing stubborn or life-threatening fat by world renowned television personality and heart surgeon Dr. Oz. Numerous students have participated in the St. Lucie County Fair, including Blair Arnold, (who earned Grand Champion, second place in showmanship and second place in grooming for her swine), Dakota Noll (who earned first place in showmanship and second place in grooming for his swine ), Chad Vachon (who earned first place in showmanship for his swine), Allison Russakis (for showing her swine), Cheyenne Noll (who earned first place for her steer), Darby White (who earned third place for her steer), and Addison McKnight (who earned first place in barrels and first place in pole bending on her horse ChaCha). Additionally, Allison Russakis earned the title of 2014 St. Lucie County Fair Queen. In the Martin County Fair, Clara Marrero won Reserve Champion with her dairy cow; Alex Marrero earned Best of Show for one of his rabbits and second place in his class for his swine, while David Marrero showed beef and dairy cows, plus a swine. Congratulations to all of our students who work hard while in school and dedicate hours of their time to participate in the fairs, too. had done everything. ... I was very skeptical.” Hansen took a gamble on the diet five years ago. HCG, which is issued with a prescription from New Beginnings, is administered at home, each day with a small insulin syringe. For patients with a phobia of needles, a pill that dissolves under the tongue is available, Hansen said. “I was not only able to lose weight rapidly, but it was where I lost it that was different than before,” Hansen said. “HCG targets abnormal fat. Abnormal fat is not lost by just going on a low-calorie diet.” Structural fat and lean muscle stays, but the fluffy muffin top and thick thighs go, love handles disappear and back fat dissipates before your very eyes, Hansen said. “It changed my body shape and totally reset my metabolism,” Hansen said. “And it gave me a new relationship with food.” Many patients lose 30 pounds in a month. Some lose more, Hansen said. Patients can participate in a 23-day cycle or 40-day cycle. New Beginnings is running a special for both durations. The 40 day program is $399. The price includes a physical examination, the hCG prescription, weekly appointments and weekly B-12 shots. Patients are also seen for six weeks after they finish the diet to phase them back to regular eating to ensure weight is not gained again, Hansen said. The 23-day cycle is $329. Another anomaly of the miracle diet is its minimal side effects, Hansen said. “I always say the biggest side effect is you want all new clothes,” Hansen said. Some patients may experience headaches for the first few days from sugar withdrawal, Hansen said. New Beginnings was established six years ago by the St. Lucie West couple. The Hansens previously ran a detox facility for individuals addicted to drugs and alcohol. New Beginnings, which has six locations from Vero Beach to Boca Raton, was established to better lives, Hansen said. “We found that many patients, when they were coming clean and sober, they changed addictions and food became their new drug of choice,” Hansen said. During the clinic’s first four years, the hCG diet program was the only service offered. In the last year, New Beginnings expanded services to include non-invasive cosmetic procedures. “We’re finding that many patients, once they lose the weight, their whole life changes,” Hansen said. “Their body image changes and they start focusing on other things that they want to make better.” New Beginnings also offers Botox, fillers, Juvéderm and testosterone therapy at reasonable prices. Hansen recommends Botox

Botox, a prescription medicine injected into facial muscles to relax them, is usually administered into muscles around the eyes and forehead to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, Hansen said. Twenty units usually cost $250, but New Beginnings is offering a $199 special. Botox patients are becoming younger and younger, Hansen said. “We’re finding more and more patients are starting to use Botox in their 30s before they get those lines and then they never do,” she said. Juvéderm, an injectable filler, is usually administered to the lower portion of the face to fill in laugh lines. One syringe can run $550, but New Beginnings is currently offering it at $449. “It lasts up to a year and it actually causes your body to produce collagen,” Hansen said. “So I don’t think you ever go back to what you looked like before you received it the first time.” “It doesn’t change the way you look, it just softens the way you look.” New Beginnings also offers testosterone therapy for $229 a month. The cost includes a physical exam, routine blood work and the injectable hormones. Only males with low testosterone are eligible for the therapy, Hansen said. Men typically start to lose testosterone in their 30s. Hansen described the perfect candidate as one who is starting to feel the effects of aging. “A man, just like a woman, starts knowing he’s getting older when he’s sitting on the couch and he doesn’t have any energy and he maybe feels a little blue and doesn’t feel like he used to,” she said. “He knows he should go to the gym, but he doesn’t want to and he feels a little out of shape and starts getting a little pot belly. Those are usually signs of low testosterone.” “Most people think testosterone is about libido and low sex drive,” Hansen said. “It does affect that, but that’s not by any means what it’s all about.” Hansen, who also heads a jailhouse ministry for female inmates at the St. Lucie County Jail in Fort Pierce, said there’s nothing more rewarding in life than helping others. “Every day, I see the results of people’s lives being changed, either medically or cosmetically and it takes them to a different level in relationships, employment opportunities and in the family life.” “I like to see people go from ashes to beauty instead of beauty to ashes,” Hansen said. They drown trying to get to America. This is a land you can do anything you set your mind to,” Massey said. “This organization and this gentleman, this doctor, have pulled together with the leader of the troop and they want the best for you. Get that Eagle Scout. You’ll be so proud because you’ll be a member of a very small group of people.” Van Duzer and the troop has gone to Miami Dolphins and Orlando Magic games together. The group has also gone fishing and will travel together to the Florida House and eventually the White House, Van Duzer said. “It gives them hope,” Van Duzer said of the troop. Scoutmaster and St. Lucie County firefighter paramedic William “Rusty” Hines said the troops aims to teach the boys about life skills, mainly respect. “The biggest thing from Day One has been respect. Respecting themselves and respecting the person next to them or the person talking to them,” Hines said. “Another big thing is being able to communicate face to face with someone with their head up and their eyes looking at the person.”

The new facility is three times the size of the previous building and will enable the food bank to increase food distribution to more than 30 million pounds annually — especially the amounts of nutritious, highly perishable protein, fruits and produce. The food bank has made small improvements to the facility to allow for safe food storage and is now raising much needed funds for renovations that will improve overall efficiency. “As we prepare for the next 25 years, we have a vision of not only ending hunger in our com-

munity, but improving the health and well-being of the people we serve,” Cruz said. ST. LUCIE WEST — If you want to get world-class musicians, sometimes it’s a question of who you know. Don Boucher, a parishioner at St. Bernadette Church in St. Lucie West, is a former dean at Chelmsford High School in Massachusetts. One of his students was Heng-Jin Park. She was an honor student as well as a gifted pianist who competed in elite competitions and gave concerts on tour. Park went on to the New England Conservatory and is the founding member of the Boston Trio, which will perform at St. Bernadette March 23. It was Boucher who brought the group to the attention of Tom Bold, director of the St. Bernadette Concert series. Park spoke by phone from her home in Boston about her impressive career and the event that changed its course. Park began her career in her native Korea at 5. “I had a visit with my extended family,” she said. “My cousin was a year or two older and played the piano. I was jealous. It was fascinating to see a little girl do that and I knew I had to do it. My mom had a close friend who played the piano and taught kids. I started with her and it was very

casual.” The family moved to the United States when Park was 10. My mother enrolled me in the New England Conservatory Prep School,” she said. “It was on Saturday and didn’t replace regular school. She drove me to Boston.” While she attended public high school, her music was still her focus. Don Boucher’s support helped make that possible. “I still refer to him as Dean Boucher,” Park said. “He tells me to call him Don, but I can’t. He’s a wonderful man, caring and compassionate. I was focused on music and he knew where my heart lay. He was very supportive if I needed to go on a trip to compete or for a concert. It’s due to him that our trio is coming (to Florida.)” After high school, Park attended the New England Conservatory for a bachelor’s and master’s degree. “I knew that’s what I wanted to do,” she said. “It’s a calling. You have to do it.” While Park began her career as a soloist, she turned to chamber music when she was 15. “There was a pivotal moment,” she said. “I went away to Yellow Barn Music Festival in Vermont. At that point, it was smaller. It was mostly college and graduate students and professional musicians. I got in. I had only played solo, but the festival was all chamber music and I fell headover-heels in love. Socially, it’s so

I loved the incredibly intimate musical dialogue.” After graduate school, Park continued to pursue a solo career. The she suffered a hand injury from overuse. “I did everything but surgery,” she said. It took six years. I got married and had children, but I had a hunger and a need to get back. I had lost my voice.” Park met a surgeon who could perform the surgery and at that point, Park felt she had nothing to lose. She had an operation on one hand and three month later,

on the other hand. The surgeries were successful, although she had lengthy rehabilitation. “Miraculously, when I started playing again, I hadn’t lost the ability,” she said. “It was all there. I asked myself what I really wanted to do. I had a second chance. The crucial years from a solo career are in your 20s. I lost those years. I was too old for international competitions. I decided I wanted to do only what I wanted to do. My love is chamber music, and my chamber music

It’s touching and moving, but it’s fun.” Park has another big endeavor on her plate. She was artistic director of the Killington Festival in Vermont, but she felt she was not in charge there. This year, she will stage the inaugural Halcyon Music festival in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It will be her responsibility and her vision. The high-schooler from Chelmsford has not lost her focus.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — St. Lucie County Community Services Department, in partnership with the Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council, has received a Supportive Services for Veteran Families Grant. These grant funds can be used to assist qualifying very-low-income veteran families with rent and deposits for housing. To be eligible for assistance, the household must contain a veteran who has served in the military and has an other than dishonorable discharge and who is eligible for VA medical benefits. The household income must be at or below 50 percent of the Area Median Income (see chart below). Priority is given to veterans returning from Iraq or Afghanistan

Nino’s adds a generous portion of fun to every dish

STUART — There’s an ingredient no restaurant can buy or sell, but it’s the most important for them to flavor every dish with. Fun. I headed to Nino’s Italian Cucina & Pizzeria Café with my girlfriend, Lisa Cody, expecting Italian food. Perhaps I’m a bit restaurant jaded; the thought of finding fun on the menu didn’t much cross my mind. Lots of restaurants seem to try to artificially generate fun. That doesn’t work. Fun is a mysterious quality that can’t be canned, only fostered. Nino’s owner, Gaetano “Guy” D’Anna, took a few minutes to talk with us before we started entrees. We found out that Guy started working in the restaurant business when he was a teenager. That was in the late ‘70s. His is a real American success story about finding and pursuing a passion to success. “I’ve done everything in the restaurant business,” Guy told us. Starting with bussing tables and washing dishes. Before long, Guy was making pizzas and waiting on customers. He spent as much time in the kitchen as he could those days. “I always wanted to be the best waiter, so I went back to the

kitchen to watch them (prepare food), and learned every ingredient,” he said. While we were talking, stuffed mushrooms with tomato, parmesan cheese, eggplant and peppers flavored with Marsala wine arrived, along with a plate of mozzarella caprese with tomato and a delicious dressing. Ah, the dressing. There’s a story behind that. “I (first) made the dressing by mistake,” Guy told us. A happy accident. It’s become the Brooklyn Guy’s Original Creamy Balsamic Dressing, and finds its ways to several of Nino’s dishes. While Lisa and I sampled the entrees, Connie Tracy and Chris Sheppard got our attention. They were sitting nearby. The two traveled from Port St. Lucie where they’d first tried Nino’s. The restaurant opened there in 2008. It needed more space, so moved to Stuart where it could open a pizzeria and bar, too. Connie was enjoying a plate of the lobster ravioli, with its generous garnishment of tomato, onion and vodka sauce. Chris was enjoying the shrimp francese. When they’d noticed me writing and taking pictures, the two wanted to rave about Nino’s. At the heart of their praise was that word: “fun.” I headed to the pizzeria with Guy to see Gaetano Traina making a Brooklyn Guy Original with mushrooms, bacon, banana peppers and, of course, that Brooklyn Guy’s Original Creamy Balsamic Dressing. When I got back to the table more than ready for a bit of that pizza, Lisa was smiling. While I was gone, the woman who’d minutes earlier been dedicated to retaining her dislike for seafood tried the clams casino with bacon, pepper, eggplant and pancetta. “I had a clam,” she told me. “First one in my entire life. It was good.” Not long after, Lisa sampled the lobster ravioli. “This is amazing,” she said. Being a guy, I had to go for that pizza. Of course, what’s pizza without a great beer? Federico Kou brought me a Samuel Adams Winter Lager with an orange slice from the Lion’s Den Bar. I found out that Federico worked at the original Nino’s in Brooklyn, New York. Guy’s father-in-law owned it. Federico started there about the same time Guy did. He followed Guy to Florida to keep working for the family.

It quickly outgrew the first location. Last year Nino’s moved to Stuart and more than doubled its capacity. The Lion’s Den Bar is a popular addition. OK, the fun was starting to make sense. Guy’s pretty good at finding and keeping folks who want restaurant careers, then training them for as far as they want to go in the business. That’s because he spends a lot of time at the restaurant. “This is my house,” he told Lisa and me. “When people come to your house, you want to have a good time.”
