All Aboard Florida Scholarships stroll comments under review STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
TREASURE COAST — Federal Railroad Administration officials will begin reviewing comments from state agencies after they missed the public comment period deadline, concerning the All Aboard Florida Draft Environmental Statement. Together with comments from residents and government officials, the comments total about 12,000, said Michael Cole, Federal Railroad Administration spokesman. The comments follow a 45-day public comment period in which residents and officials had time to vent concerns over the proposed $2.25 billion railroad, which 32 passenger trains per day would pass along the Treasure Coast, starting 2017. The Florida State Clearinghouse was responsible for submitting the agencies’ comments. Cole said the clearinghouse was busy reviewing the comments when the original Dec. 3 deadline set by the Federal Rail Administration passed. Despite missing deadline, Cole said those additional comments will be reviewed. “The next step is to make sure all of those comments have been gone through and then we’ll categorize them. Say one is vibration from the trains. If we have 1,000 comments about that,

Together with comments from residents and government officials, the comments total about 12,000 they’ll get grouped, and we’ll go over them,” Cole said. “And then they’ll be addressed in the (Final Environmental Impact Study), and then we’ll make the final document, called the record of decision. That’s the final federal record regarding that project, saying what is going to happen.” There currently is no deadline for reviewing the comments or preparing the Final Environmental Impact Study and record of final decision, Cole said. Seven agencies comprise the clearinghouse - Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resource, Florida Department of Transportation, St. Johns River Water Management District, South Florida

Police ask for help identifying shoplifting suspect Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
TRADITION — Police are asking the public’s help in identifying a woman who stole nearly $1,000 worth of fragrances from a beauty supply store. Port St. Lucie Police Master Sgt. Frank Sabol said the manager of Ulta Beauty Supply Store, along Village Parkway, said the woman went to the fragrance section and placed several bottles of perfume into her purse at about 5 p.m. March 5. While leaving the store, she tripped a security alarm and left in what appeared to be a black Kia sedan. The woman was captured on surveillance footage. She is a white female, likely in her 20s or early 30s with medium height and build, light brown hair, and either a bruise or tattoo on her right bicep. The suspect was seen wearing a white printed T-shirt, blue jeans and black sneakers. Anyone with any information can call the Port St. Lucie Police Department at (772) 871-5001 or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-800-273 TIPS.

Bomber pilot’s long career in flying began in World War II Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER

ST. LUCIE WEST — “We knew we were going to invade Japan,” said Army Air Corps and Air Force veteran Joe Russell of St. Lucie West. “And we knew it was going to be very different (than the war in Europe). The Japanese were prepared to fight to the death.” In World War II, Russell was a B-29 Superfortress bomber pilot, whose mission was pinpointing Japanese targets in the Pacific. The Superfortress was so advanced that Japanese fighters could barely engage them in combat, he said. He would go on to perform the same missions in the Korean War as well. Russell’s career began March 4, 1942, with his enlistment in the Army. After basic training, he went to a classification center to take tests — “they tried to mess with your head,” he said, referring to the weeklong battery as a “carnival.” The tests determined whether a future aviator would become a pilot, navigator or bombardier. Russell wanted to be a fighter pilot, but was assigned bomber classification. Then came training at Lackland, Texas, in primary flight and basic airplane specifica-

during the war. Nothing good could come of this, I thought. (Actual thoughts were a bit more profane) OK, granted, the pilot and I were still on the ground, but it’s still pretty unsettling — getting ready to go hang out with some birds in the sky in an old plane and then caput, mechanical problems. My pilot, Mark Adema, who flies 777s for United Airlines, pumped in more fuel and gave it another go. Nothing. “We’ll get it going.” Again. Nothing. At this stage, all I could think was “If by the grace of God, this metal hunk of (expletive) gets in the air, I won’t be around to tell about it.” More fuel. More nothing. About 20 minutes went by. Some of the guys working the air show came over. “We’ve got a battery, if you need it,” one yelled up to us. Mark didn’t think it needed a charge. More fuel. It sounded like it was going to start. Nope. We sat. No one had an answer. The other pilots needed us to get out of the way, so they could have
their fun. We were wheeled off. It sucked. Since I learned air show media days were a thing, I’ve been dying to be a passenger in a World War II plane. Despite feeling uneasy when the engine first cut out, I did not want to leave without getting in the air. I had only flown one time before and that wasn’t even that cool — it was a commercial flight to head to Pittsburgh, so I could be with family for Christmas. Even my uncle, who, like Mark, is a pilot with United, said it was nice to see another commercial guy doing some “real” flying. That’s what I hoped to experience. Waiting around wasn’t so bad, though. My uncle was texting me jokingly told me not to hold it against Mark for being with United, and we had some laughs. Mark said he was sorry that the plane wouldn’t start. “I don’t know what it could be. Maybe I flooded it,” he suggested. He called a buddy who knows a lot about the T-6s. Meanwhile, I saw our photographer, Mitch Kloorfain, getting ready to board a B-25 bomber. He opted for a bomber run to allow me my first experience in

BOMBER from page A4 “First we had to get Guam, Tinian and Saipan,” he said. “And Iwo Jima was the last one captured.” His missions lasted an average of 17 hours. Bomb-dropping planes would come in, and the Japanese radar would be turned on, he said. Then, using specialized equipment aboard the plane, “we would pinpoint where the radar targets were, so the bombers could take them out. “We had no guns and no escort,” Russell said. “But the B-29 was ahead of its time. The Japanese could only make two passes at us and then gave up. It was a much, much faster airplane.” Bombers at that time made devastating use of incendiaries, or firebombs, Russell said. “(Gen.) ‘Iron Pants,’ Curtis LeMay, favored low-altitude firebombing for sure,” he said. “The effects were worse than the nuclear bomb.” It wasn’t long before Russell was back behind the wheel for the Korean War, but in a different kind of aircraft — this time, he got his wish to become a fighter pilot. In the squadron he applied to, “there was one slot open for a 2nd lieutenant, and I was a captain,” Russell said. “So, I resigned (that rank) to fly fighters. I didn’t care.” In Korea, his missions involved low-altitude flying, going after infrastructure like rail lines and supply depots. “Things were pretty desperate,” he said. “The North Koreans had gotten as far as Pusan. We got caught flat-footed, but we made things turn around.” After the war, Russell stayed in the Air National Guard for 15 years, serving as a test pilot for newer planes and training upcoming pilots. Because of his earlier reduction in rank, “I retired as a major, but I couldn’t care less,” he said.
In civilian life, for seven years, “I flew almost everywhere, buying and selling surplus planes,” he said. Originally from Baltimore, Russell said he sold two large businesses there in 1981 and moved to Stuart in 1983, where he bought a house with a garage so he could build airplanes in it. One of the businesses he sold involved installing storage tanks with plastic liners to convert them to food containers, Russell said. While in Saudi Arabia on a project to install a water system, the Khobar Towers housing community was bombed by terrorists, resulting in 19 servicemen’s deaths and more than 400 military and civilian wounded — some of whom were Russell’s employees. Russell even sponsored a young Japanese woman, Emi Yatabe, who wanted to attend American school to learn English. He allowed her to stay in his home while she pursued her education. “At first, she told me she didn’t want to become ‘Americanized,’” Russell said. “But sure enough, she did become ‘Americanized.’ She wanted to stay here, but wound up going back to Japan to teach English. “I talk to her every week on Skype. She has me speak to her class, so they must follow English, while I get to try my Japanese.” Now living in St. Lucie West, Russell likes to go back to Stuart every so often to meet with friends “and talk about airplanes,” he said. He is doing battle with melanoma and figures his days may be numbered, but said he has no regrets. “I’ve lived a storybook life,” he said. “I’ve gotten to do more things than most other people. “I keep having this feeling that there’s something else I’m supposed to do, but I guess I’ll know it when it happens.”

Water Management District, East Central Florida Regional Planning Council. In addition to those, the South Florida Regional Planning Council and Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council submitted comments directly to the Federal Rail Administration, Cole said. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s southeast district office advised that contamination screening evaluations may be required along the corridor prior to construction. “Land clearing, construction debris and other non-hazardous debris, drums, solid wastes, tanks and potentially contaminated soils must all be managed in accordance with federal, state and local requirements,” the statement said. The DEP also warned that Savannas Preserve State Park would be at risk. “The Division notes that some areas near Savannas Preserve State Park have wildlife habitat. The potential for impacts to natural communities exists through direct or indirect habitat loss and disturbance. The Division encourages minimization and avoidance measures related to impacts adjacent to the state park,” their comments showed.
WWW.YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM John Dickinson State Park would be susceptible to new invasive plant species, which would put existing plant and wildlife at risk, the DEP warned. There would also need to be plans for road closures, the DEP officials said. The South Florida Water Management District only said that more permits may be required, adding “The SFWMD has no specific comments on the Draft EIS.” The Florida Department of Transportation recommended financial plans to account for road closings and crossings because the current plans weren’t enough. The crossings are a major point of concern for Treasure Coast sheriffs. Men Mascara, St. Lucie County; William Snyder, Martin County; and Daryl Loar, Indian River County, sent a letter to All Aboard Florida President Michael Reininger, asking him to be aware of the safety dangers the project will create. “If rail traffic significantly increases, passing trains can and will prevent emergency first responders from expeditiously reaching points of need,” the letter said. “In an emergency response, a delay of seconds could mean the difference between life and death.”

Murphy, Guthrie lead letter opposing proposed puts to Medicare Advantage Program Letter has the support of more than half of the U.S. House of Representatives FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TREASURE COAST — Last week, Congressmen Patrick E. Murphy (FL-18) and Brett Guthrie (KY-02) sent a letter to the acting administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to express concern about proposed payment changes to the Medicare Advantage program. The letter included the signatures of 239 members of Congress — more than half of the U.S. House of Representatives. According to America’s Health Insurance Plans, more than 16 million Americans are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan. Last month, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services proposed additional payment cuts for 2016, which follows deep cuts the previous two years. To date, these cuts have impacted more than one million seniors. Should these

Our goal is to raise $5,000 in 60 days before the summer session starts, to ensure that as many children as possible get the life-saving skills provided in this course. Your donation will help enroll more children in this safety program and give them the opportunity to repeat this class and participate in other radKIDS courses for free. This gift will provide our children with the knowledge, skills and power to protect themselves from harm. Make a donation at www.gofundme.com/pslpal. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter #pslradkids For more information, contact Jenny Newell, public information officer, city of Port St. Lucie. (772) 873-6326.

Man charged with grand theft for taking tents Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE WEST — A Port St. Lucie man was charged with grand theft after allegedly stealing $1,000 worth of tents and other goods March 14 at Walmart along Southwest St. Lucie West Boulevard. Police arrested Thomas Schwarz,
30, after Wal-Mart employees witnessed him walk out of the store through the gardening department without paying for the three tents he was carrying out, according to the arrest affidavit. Surveillance footage showed Schwarz re-enter the store and take more items: two tower fans, three bed pillows, a home sound system, a microwave and a personal grill.

PORT ST. LUCIE — Police are warning residents of a new scheme from criminal organizations. Police say the organizations are shipping packages that are purchased using payment information from identify theft victims. The people running the schemes have the items shipped to different addresses, hoping to avoid detection, thinking that police will believe the person who mistakenly received the package is the one at fault.
Police are asking residents to contact them if they receive a package not addressed to them or one that they did not expect. If asked by a stranger to accept a package before it arrives to your residence, police ask that you agree to accept the package. They will likely say they accidentally used your address. When they pick up the package, pay attention to their appearance and vehicle description. Then, call police. If asked by a stranger to accept a package after it arrives to your residence, police say to deny having any knowledge of the package and ask for identification. Then call police after they leave.

ST. LUCIE WEST — Did you know that the Navy flies blimps, along with its other aircraft? Many people are unaware that this branch of Naval aviation exists, much less how important its mission has been throughout the decades. Peter Brouwer, St. Lucie West, said he’d always wanted to serve on submarines, when he enlisted in 1955. “I’d passed every test for submarine duty,” he said. “But, I’d had my appendix taken out and had a long scar. It could have opened under pressure.” So, Brouwer volunteered for aviation duty. After boot camp, he trained at Norman, Okla., where he was chosen as a machinist’s mate to work on engines. Then came the assignment to “a very small base” known as the Weeksville Naval Air Facility in Weeksville, N.C., Brouwer said,
pointing out that it differentiates from Naval Air Stations due to its small size. (The facility was subsequently upgraded to Air Station status; currently TCOM, a private airship manufacturer, uses the facility to build blimps and airships for everything from surveillance to sporting events.) “Every (crew member) had to be trained in all operations of the airship,” Brouwer said. “Each crew numbered five or six, including the pilot, copilot, radioman, sonarman, machinist’s mate and metalsmith. Brouwer’s responsibility was maintaining the engines. The main mission of the Navy’s airships was to hunt, and possibly destroy, submarines during wartime. Throughout Brouwer’s service, his airships hunted Soviet submarines in the waters around Cuba. Even before Fidel Castro took over leadership in the 1959 Cuban revolution, “the Soviets were

Brouwer said he never assisted in an actual rescue, but “we did many, many practice drills.” The airship had winches to “I’ll never forget (Chief Warrant Officer) Willoughby putting cloths on his hands — by God, he somehow got the cables back on.”

scoop sea water to act as ballast if the ship got too light, “so we could drop lifesaving baskets if we needed to,” he said. “Most maneuvers took place over the open ocean. We had no parachutes. And we were issued Bowie knives,” he said. This was in case the crewmen could cut themselves loose from the airship “envelope” if it fell on top of them. During one patrol, Brouwer said, his blimp was carrying depth charges. “We were about 100 feet above the waterline,” he said. “The depth charges were set to go off about 20 or 30 feet below the waterline. “We dropped several of them, but they went off lower than anticipated. The concussion rocked the whole envelope. It took cables off of pulleys — we started going lower and lower. “I’ll never forget (Chief Warrant Officer) Willoughby putting cloths on his hands — by God, he somehow got the cables back on.” The experience was “quite inter-
esting,” Brouwer said drily. The airship crews practice maneuvers included coordinating with Naval subs. “We traded crews aboard each other’s vessels,” Brouwer said. “I enjoyed it. And, I got a taste of sub life after all,” he added with a chuckle. Most people are probably unaware that not only does the Navy have airships in its fleet, but there are several different types, including balloons, blimps, dirigibles, zeppelins, and other airships. Brouwer flew in a K-class blimp, known as a K-ship, originally designed during World War II. They were about 252 feet long, with a 40-foot car. They could reach a maximum speed of 78 miles per hour, and had a range of more than 2,000 miles. During the latter years of the 1950s, the K-ships underwent many modifications before being decommissioned in 1959, which coincided with the ending of Brouwer’s service. Nowadays, Brouwer is a member of the Naval Airship Association, a national group formed in 1980, of which he was secretary-treasurer for 10 years, stepping down just recently. “The group comprises former naval aviators, but we’re also open to the public,” Brouwer said. There are about 500 members throughout the U.S. and Europe whose mission is “to keep history going,” he said. Brouwer said he couldn’t point to any one experience that was the most memorable, calling his whole time serving as enjoyable. “I was part of a small outfit, but it took plenty of people on the ground to handle (the ship),” Brouwer said. “I’m pretty proud of it.” For more information on the Naval Airship Association, visit www.naval-airships.org

a stunt plane as he has done it numerous times. It was time to try something else. Someone suggested he flood it. I’m no expert, but, if that’s what the problem might have been, wouldn’t that be counterintuitive? I kept my mouth shut. I’m all right with words and can complete some handyman tasks, but I don’t know the least bit about 70-year-old plane fuel systems. If anyone could get the plane going, it was these guys. More fuel. A lot more. Nothing. There wasn’t much else to try. The crew hooked up the other battery, and gave it some juice. More fuel. There was smoke everywhere. It worked. Mark let it run for a while and did some tests, and we were good to go. “Yep, I flooded it,” he said. Mitch took off in the bomber, and we were about ready to follow. “You all right back there?” Mark asked. “Absolutely. Let’s go,” I said. “There’s bags back there on your right if you get sick.” Oh. McDonald’s breakfast probably wasn’t a good idea. Whatever, I was ready. It would have been nice to have a parachute ready, but oh, well.
There was that guy who landed on the Hudson River in New York. Surely, Mark could park the thing in the Atlantic if we needed to, right? Luckily, we didn’t. The plane flew perfectly, and it turned out to be one of the greatest experiences of my life. Mark took us over Titusville, dipping and diving, just having fun. He made a pass close to the runway after a few minutes. I hoped that wasn’t it for the ride. It wasn’t. I think he was trying to get me to lose my breakfast because we made a tight turn and the right wing looked like it was a foot away from the ground. It was thrilling, though. We went south, and Mark told me to take over. Mitch told me it took him 10 years before a pilot gave him full rein at the controls. I tilted us left and right. I ascended and descended. I got a feel for it pretty quickly. “How you liking it?” he asked. “This is awesome!” I yelled back. “You see that causeway there to the left? Take us over it and out to the ocean,” he said. “Target in sight.” OK, I didn’t actually say that. Seriously, I felt like a little kid on Christmas morning the entire day, and this was just the icing on the cake. I did as he asked, and, by the time we were about to pass over some cruise ships docked below,
View of the Atlantic from the skies over Titusville. Mark said he’d be taking the controls back. “Fair enough,” I said. We glided over hundreds of beachgoers — them looking up at us as we watch them from above. It was spectacular. Mark took us for a quick cruise over the Atlantic and all that

lurked in it before heading back. We touched down smoothly. You couldn’t wipe the smirk on my face off with a Brillo pad. Mark asked me how I liked it. “Not bad for one of those United guys.” Brandon Zeris is a staff writer for Veteran Voice.

Diamonds By Terry M
Terry Rieger’s Biography
aster Jeweler and Gemologist Terry Rieger’s 40 year career had an unusual beginning, as a traditional artist her early 20’s. Terry’s culinary hobby provided an additional outlet for displaying her other artistic talents. She delighted in designing confectionery masterpieces. If she wasn’t creating exquisitely decorated wedding cakes for friends and family, she was sculpting whimsical, mouth-watering candies, or designing sugar Easter eggs with complete 3-D panoramas inside. The occupants of those windowed eggs were meticulously detailed, right down to microscopic whiskers on the tiny Easter bunnies. One of those Easter eggs, a gift to a family friend, is responsible for launching her lifelong career in jewelry. That family friend happened to be a jeweler, and became so drawn to her artistry, that he insisted her designs must be produced in gold. Her mentor, refusing to take no for an answer, arranged for a full compliment of jewelers tools to be delivered, and arranged for her to be the first and only student ever tutored by noted Russian jeweler, Constance Osmanski. Terry found herself commuting back and forth to Europe for the next twelve years, studying and perfecting her craft in London’s famed diamond quarter, Hatton Garden. Hatton Garden is home to DeBeer’s Central Selling Organization, and is regarded as one of the great jewelry areas of Europe. Terry’s interest in restoration of fine estate jewelry spans better than twenty-three of her 40 years in this profession, and that interest has also led her to become an avid collector of period gems and jewelry components. Over the years she has built a well cataloged component collection as an in-house resource for accurate restoration of antique and estate jewelry. A missing gem or pearl, or a damaged section of gold or platinum in a fine piece of antique jewelry should only be replaced with components which exactly match the color, cut, size, shape, age and patina of the original, she explains. Terry says that over the years she has amassed a small mountain of vintage seed pearls, garnets, rose cut diamonds and the like. The store even has the uniquely colored Persian turquoise in its collection. Terry is also particularly adept at restoring exquisite French enamel pieces. A frequent lecturer on gemology, Terry is a well known expert in the history of jewelry. Over the years she made it her habit to do in depth research not only on the jewels of particular periods, but the reasons and influences behind their use in related jewelry designs. Lela, a member of the audience at one of her lectures mentions that an acquaintance has offered to sell her a white gold antique ring dating from the late 1800’s, and Terry’s face will light up with a mischievous grin. You might want to have me do a verbal appraisal on that before you buy it, she’ ll suggest, because white gold wasn’t discovered until 1912. Terry’s passion remains custom jewelry; however, and her exquisite designs range from the extraordinarily graceful to the wonderfully whimsical. “if you can dream it”, she’ ll tell you with a smile, “we can make it for you.”

PSL Rotary Clubs unite to prevent traffic fatalities FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — On Thursday, June 20, 2014, Port St. Lucie police were called to investigate a fatal accident at the corner of Del Rio and California boulevards. Although there is a fourway stop at that intersection, a young man failed to stop, hitting another car, killing the driver. This is a scene repeated all too often throughout communities, a scene that leaves families dealing with the aftermath of a preventable tragedy. Assistant Rotary Governor Catherine Griffin heard about a project, called “BriteSide Reflective Panels,” being promoted by Rotary District Governor Juan Ortega. With this project, reflective panels help increase the visibility of stop signs, especially during rain or darkness. The panels

were being made available to local clubs to have installed in their communities throughout the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast. Griffin immediately thought of the Del Rio and California intersection, located just blocks from her home. Soon after, she met with the Patricia Christensen, president of the PSL Sunset Rotary Club and Paula Andreozzi, president of the PSL Rotary Club to garner their support for the project. The trio presented the idea to the city of Port St. Lucie’s staff. Once approved by the City Council, the City’s Engineering department worked with the Port St. Lucie Police Department to determine the intersections that had the most traffic incidents. The panels were placed in 16 of those intersections, including the one at Del Rio and

ROTARY from page A27 California boulevards. “We heard about this project through our district. In fact, our district governor, Juan Ortega, just happens to have a doctorate in traffic engineering and he really felt that this project made a lot of sense and was a worthwhile one for our clubs to do,” Griffin said. “We all felt that it was an opportunity for our local Rotary Clubs to give back to our community and to show our support for the city.” While they aren’t saying the panels would have had an impact on the fatality last June, the Rotarians feel anything that can be done to help keep citizens safer is a priority. Retired business owner and Palm Beach Rotary member Albert Burlando designed and patented the “Brightside Reflective Panel” to make stop signs more noticeable. He personally donated the 10,000 panels to Rotary Clubs from District 6930 from Boca Raton to Titusville. A number of those Rotary Clubs did similar projects in their communities. The panels meet uniform traffic codes of the National University Transportation Center. They are advertised
to increase signs’ visibility by 40 percent in the day, and 50 percent at night. Port St. Lucie City Councilwoman Linda Bartz was very supportive of the project. “I think that partnering with the Rotary Club or with any group that wants to help the city protect our children and residents are partnerships that are extremely valuable to all of us,” Bartz said. “I am grateful that the Rotary club presented this initiative to the city and I believe that we will reap the benefits of having these reflectors on our signs.” Although the value of the panels was $3,500, with Burlando’s donation, the cost to the city was zero. The two Port St. Lucie Rotary Clubs have partnered on a couple projects, including a food packing event and an upcoming project for the local Boys & Girls Club. Peripheral Neuropathy WARNING The treatment to increase blood flow utilizes a specialized low level light therapy (not to be confused with laser therapy) using light emitting diode technology. This technology was originally developed by NASA to assist in increasing blood flow.
Port St. Lucie, FL — The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Neurontin, and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects. Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. As you can see in Figure 2, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning and many additional symptoms.
The low level light therapy is like watering a plant. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a plant and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper.
Figure 2: When these very small blood vessels become diseased they begin to shrivel up and the nerves begin to degenerate. three factors must be determined. 1) What is the underlying cause? 2) How Much Nerve Damage Has Been Sustained. NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is likely nothing that we can do for you. 3) How much treatment will your condition require?
The treatment that is provided at our clinic has three main goals: 1) Increase blood flow 2) Stimulate small fiber nerves 3) Decrease brain-based pain
The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage there is hope! Dr. John Silva, D.C. at the Neuropathy Relief Center will conduct a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy. Call 772-429-8800 to make an appointment with Dr. Silva to determine if your peripheral neuropathy can be treated. This comprehensive evaluation is limited to the first 12 callers who reserve an appointment.
Dr. John Silva, D.C.
Figure 1: Notice the very small blood vessels surrounding each nerve.
The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here in Port St. Lucie that offers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (see the special neuropathy severity examination at the end of this article) In order to effectively treat your neuropathy,

‘Flashdance’ melds ‘80s styles with music Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — If you remember leg warmers, neon tights, big hair, torn T-shirts and other over-the-top fashion statements, then you remember the 1980s. The movie “Flashdance” caught the era and made a star out of Jennifer Beals. Now the movie about a female steel mill welder named Alex who dreams of becoming a professional dancer has been brought to life on stage with the show “Flashdance-The Musical.” The national touring company will present the show at the Sunrise Theatre March 29. Adam Rennie plays Nick in the production. The Sydney, Australia native is a big fan of the movie and the show. “I grew up on ‘Flashdance,’ he said. “It was a huge cultural phenomenon. I like getting the opportunity to tell the story on stage. We have incredible dancers and some amazing music.” Rennie said that picking up an American accent for the show wasn’t a problem. “I grew up watching American movies and television,” he said. “Our media is full of British and American content.” Rennie said that while the show

Folk legend at Emerson Center Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

TREASURE COAST — Tom Paxton’s latest CD, “Redemption Road,” is his 62nd, although he says he’s lost count. He also says he is absolutely not an icon, even though he has a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He can’t deny that he’s witty and urbane, as those are my impressions after a phone interview about his upcoming concert April 10 at the Emerson Center with his friend, singer/ songwriter Janis Ian. For Paxton, it was a concert that turned him from a lover of folk music to someone who had to perform it. The Weavers, a group that included Pete Seeger, performed in a famous concert at Carnegie Hill in the mid-1950s. “It was magic to me,” he said.” Peter Yarrow (later of Peter, Paul and Mary) was at the concert. It really got to us. What it

did for me was show me the incredible breadth of folk music, how international it was and how it spoke from many, many cultures. It appealed to my idealism that there was a human condition that could be connected through music.” “We owe 90 percent of the music to the English, Irish and Scots. They were people who made up songs while they worked. Most folk music was made by people who did something else for a living. Cowboys made up and sang songs while working to entertain themselves. They sang around the campfire. There was no other entertainment. ‘Shenandoah’ began as a highly rhythmic shanty work song sung by sailors.” Paxton noted that folk music has had a prominent role in both the civil rights and anti-war movements. “The songs filled all

“Sergio Trujillo, the director and choreographer, has made such an incredible melting pot of the styles of dance,” Rennie said. “There’s the 1980s numbers everyone expects and wants, but there’s ballet and hip hop. The dancers give their all every night. As a live show in 2015, having all those styles makes it feel like a musical from today.” The show has kept songs from the movie including “What a Feeling,” “Maniac” and “Gloria” and has added 16 songs written to complement the story and make it a musical. “They’ve done an incredible job of tying them together into the styles of the other songs,” Rennie said. “It feels cohesive.” The actor said that teens studying dance could learn a great deal from watching the show. “The technique and skill of the dancers is so amazing,” he said. “If they’re studying dance and want to see people excelling, it’s an amazing experience. It’s a really fun night at the theater.” “Flashdance-The Musical” will be presented at the Sunrise Theatre 117 S. Second St., Fort Pierce, March 29 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $59 and $69. takes place in a steel mill in Pittsburgh, it is about more than that. “If you take the basic story and take away the specifics, it’s about a girl with a big heart and a lot of passion going after something she really wants. Karli Dinardo, the girl who plays Alex, has phenomenal energy and is one of the best singers and dancers I’ve seen. You want to cheer her on. The story is about wanting her to succeed.” “Flashdance-The Musical” is also a love story. “That’s where I come in,” Rennie said. “I play Nick and, in this production, I’m the grandson of the owner, so I’m closer to her in age (than in the movie.) I’m her boss. I’ve been sent there to streamline and downsize things, and I hit obstacles when I become friends with people and fall on love with Alex. Alex and I have challenges as we have very different upbringings and lives. “Nick has never been in this challenging environment. Everyone has pandered to him. Alex challenges him. It’s not an easy road that they have, but they have something special that a lot of people are searching for.” Of course, since this is a musical about dancing, there is a lot of dancing.

Tony Award-winning ‘Memphis’ is Riverside Theatre’s final production of 2014-2015 season FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TREASURE COAST — Riverside Theatre’s celebrated 2014-2015 season comes to a close with “Memphis,” the rollicking new musical that took Broadway by storm. “Memphis” performs on the Stark Stage from April 7–26, and is sponsored by Dick and Rosemary Haverland, John and Marilyn McConnell, Ray and Sonia McGowan and Bobbie Olsen; along with Riverside Theatre’s Patron Producers. “Memphis” is produced in association with the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. Winner of four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical, “Memphis” is set in the 1950s and revolves around the nightclubs, radio stations and recording studios of the town. “Memphis” tells the fictional story of DJ Huey Calhoun, a good ol’ local boy with a passion for R&B music and Felicia Farrell, an up-and-coming singer from the clubs. Despite the objections of their loved ones, they embark on a dangerous affair. As their careers rise, their relationship is
challenged by personal ambition and the pressures of their forbidden love. With electrifying musical and dance numbers, “Memphis” delivers a rousing evening of theatre. With music by David Bryan, a book by Joe DiPietro and music and lyrics by both Bryan and DiPietro, “Memphis” is loosely based on the life of Dewey Phillips, one of the first white DJs to play black music in 1950s “Memphis.” Phillips was also the first to broadcast Elvis Presley’s debut record, “That’s All Right/ Blue Moon of Kentucky.” “Memphis” is the second collboration between Bryan and DiPietro. Their first, “The Toxic Avenger,” opened off-Broadway in April 2009. “Memphis” opened on Broadway in October at the Shubert Theatre and closed in August 2012 after 30 previews and 1,165 performances. A London production opened in October 2014. DiPietro is the author of many successful plays and musicals including: “I Love You,” “You’re Perfect, Now Change,” “Over The River And Through The Woods,”
“All Shook Up” and “Nice Work If You Can Get It.” Bryan is primarily known as the keyboardist for the popular rock band, Bon Jovi. Riverside Theatre’s production is directed and choreographed by Richard Stafford and stars Christopher Sutton as Huey Calhoun, Kimber Sprawl as Felicia Farrell, Philip Michael Baskerville as Delray Farrell, Travis Keith Battle as Gator, Nichalas Parker as Bobby, Mary Martello as Mama/ Gladys and Ron Wisniski as Mr. Simmons. The ensemble cast includes: Sarah Buscaino, Jovan Dansberry, Christopher DeAngelis, Drew Franklin, Holly Googe, Billy D. Hart, April Holloway, Jesse Jones, Gregory Omar Osborne, Kristen Pope, Fran Prisco, Kerri Rose and Edward C. Smith. Casting was done in Philadelphia and New York City by Brian Kurtas, CSA. Tickets start at $35. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at (772) 231-6990 or online at www.riversidetheatre. com. “Memphis” is a co-production
between the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia and Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach. After a three-week run at Riverside, “Memphis” begins performances in Philadelphia on May 12th and closes on July 12th. Riverside Performances are: April 7, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25 at 8 p.m.; April 8, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22, 25 and 26 at 2 p.m. and April 8, 9, 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. Riverside Theatre is America’s largest professional theatre in a small town. Riverside Theatre programs are sponsored in part by the state of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Riverside Theatre is a member of the Cultural Council of Indian River County. The London production of Memphis garnered eight 2015 Laurence Olivier Award nominations (London’s version of the Tony Awards) including: Best Musical, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Choreography, Sound, Costumes, and Music.

PAXTON from page B3 kinds of functions,” he said. “In the civil rights movement, you were singing in the face of fire hoses. They inspired courage. When people where in jail cells, it was useful for keeping spirits up and the eye on the prize. “In the anti-war movement, my guide was Yip Harburg (writer of ‘Brother, Can You Spare a Dime,’ and other Depression-era protest songs.) He said that words inspire thought and music inspires feeling. A song is thought in music. They are thought and feeling combined.” Paxton is often asked for advice by young songwriters. “The best advice I can give any songwriter is to pick up the newspaper, looking for anything that moves you in any way,” he said. “Write a song as a participant or eyewitness. It gets the songwriter into the world and away from relationship songs. It gets us away from brooding about our boring lives. Writing as a participant or eyewitness opens everything up to us. ‘Write what you know’ is baloney. Write what you can imagine. Make it believable and pack it with detail. It comes to you when you decide to write (about) the world. There are many great songs waiting to be written.” For the upcoming concert,

Paxton will share the stage a good deal of the time with Ian, whom he has known since she was 13. As Paxton recounted it for a story last week about Ian, he was at a hootenanny at the Village Gate in Greenwich Village to raise money for the magazine “Broadside.” “Janis sat between Len Chandler and me,” he said. “We adopted her. She was a little drink of water from New Jersey. We loved her. She became a star a year later.” The two will share the stage, performing each other’s works, and will be joined by instrumentalist Robin Bullock. For Paxton, who has spent virtually his entire career as a solo act, it’s a departure. “The only other experience I have (performing with someone else) was in the 1980s, when I had a trio,” he said. “This is not a split bill. We take the stage together with Robin Bullock. We’re on stage for the first half, and that’s what makes it so much fun to do.” Singer/songwriters Tom Paxton and Janis Ian appear in concert April 10 at 7 p.m. at the Emerson Center, 1590 27th Ave., Vero Beach. Tickets are $40-$75. To order tickets, visit the website www.TheEmersonCenter.org. or call (772) 778-5249.

Haitian art on display from private collection FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
FORT PIERCE — The A.E. Backus Museum will present “Sequined Sentinels — Masterpieces of Haitian Art,” an exhibition featuring beaded Vodou flags from the private collection of art critic, journalist and art collector Candice Russell. The show is from now through May 1. The creativity of many of Haiti’s people is inspired by their belief in a pantheon of gods. Their artistry is most strikingly manifested in Vodou flags with their colorful sequined and beaded imagery. The majority of all Haitians

profess some sort of religious affiliation, with the vast majority being Catholic. The New World Afro-diasporic religion of Vodou is also practiced, as an overlapping religion, by an estimated 50 percent of the population. Vodou encompasses several different traditions, and consists of a mix encompassing African, European and indigenous Taíno religious elements. In this way, it is very similar to other Latin American syncretistic movements, such as the Cuban Santería. Just as the foundations of Christianity were overlaid on the celebrations and symbolism of Roman paganism, so too is Haiti’s brand of Vodou

IRSC hosts Science Research Conference for students showcase FORT PIERCE — Sharing their research on combating diseases, easing pain, fighting crop blight and protecting the environment, 50 students and 26 college faculty members from around the state will participate in the Life Science South Florida Undergraduate Research Conference. This third annual conference will be hosted by Indian River State College on Saturday, April 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the William and Helen Thomas STEM Center at the Pruitt Campus in St. Lucie West. Used by educational institutions nationwide, STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. Eight IRSC students in bachelor’s degree in biology programs will compete in the poster sessions, explaining what their research entailed, with another IRSC students serving as an oral presenter. IRSC had a first- and second-place winner at both of the previous two conferences and the current students are eager to exceed that record. “The Life Science Research Conference provides students statewide with the opportunity to showcase their projects and become familiar with a broad spectrum of scientific research,” said Casey Lunceford, IRSC Provost for Indian River County. “IRSC’s Thomas STEM Center is an ideal venue for this prestigious event. Housing highly-sophisticated teaching laboratories, the Thomas STEM Center is located at the center of the region’s biotechnology hub in Port St. Lucie.” The opening session from
9-10:30 a.m. is reserved for the students, professors and speakers. At 9:30 a.m., Ken Pruitt, St. Lucie County Property Appraiser and former Florida State Senate president, will address the history of the life science industry and associated research in Florida, the efforts made to bring life science institutes to the State and his vision for the future. He will be followed from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. by the keynote speaker, Richard Houghten, CEO and founder of Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies in Port St. Lucie. He will speak about research and entrepreneurship in the life science industry in today’s challenging climate and present his views on the future of the industry. The public is invited to view the scientific posters and displays created by the students from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Similar to a science fair, winners in different scientific disciplines will be selected, including a first and second prize for oral presentation. Winners receive iPads and other educational materials. Scientists from Torrey Pines, the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute and the USDA Horticultural Research Laboratory will judge events. Several universities will attend to recruit students for graduate school openings. Six universities and four state colleges are participating, including Florida International University, St. Thomas University, Barry University, Florida Atlantic University, Nova Southeastern University, Florida Gulf Coast University, IRSC, Palm Beach State College, Broward State College and Miami Dade State College will participate.

TREASURE COAST — You don’t have to travel to Walt Disney or Universal Orlando to enjoy one of the most technologically advanced rides. Me:Go, the ultimate NEV (Neighborhood Electric Vehicle), allows you to get wherever you need to go, providing freedom on four wheels with distances up to 50-miles in a single battery charge. Incredibly efficient, the Me:Go battery recharges in just six hours by plugging into a standard household outlet, no special charger needed, and the Me:Go does not produce any greenhouse gas emissions. NEVs are classified under the U.S. Department of Transportation as low-speed vehicles. While regulations for operating NEVs vary by state, as used in the Florida Statutes, NEVs may be operated only on streets where the posted speed limit is 35 miles per hour or less. This does not prohibit a low-speed vehicle from crossing a road or a street at an intersection where the road or street has a posted speed limit of more than 35 miles per hour. Recreational vehicles, neighborhood electric vehicles and mobility scooters are exploding as an alternative form of transportation all across the USA and in other countries as well. Approximately 500,000 NEVs were on the road in 2011 and a 45 percent increase is anticipated by 2017 as more people turn to riding electric vehicles. In 2011, the Sun Sentinel reported that many South Florida families are joining the growing trend of lowspeed vehicle owners, using NEVs to go to work, take the kids to school and run errands around the neighborhood. The newspaper reported that modified street-legal golf carts were also taking off, with some luxury models costing nearly $30,000 on the market, and where certain affluent neighborhoods have adopted them as the mainstream form of transportation. However, with that in mind, the MeGo is a much more afford-
able alternative, with a retail cost of $7,990. It can carry a payload of more than 700 pounds and master off-road terrain and roads with inclines up to 30-percent. The Me:Go can be equipped with a steering wheel, gas and brake pedal or a handlebar with a motorcycle throttle. Some of its other features built to suit an individual’s preferences and styles include, ergonomic captain’s chair with adjustable backrest, headrest, armrest and lumbar support, optional stereo FM radio and MP3 player to keep you entertained, accessories like a shopping basket, optional roof or canopy to guarantee you a place in the shade, utility pouch, golf bag holder, golf tee and ball holder, (or fishing pole or hunting rack carrier), bench seat for two and other more personal customized options for persons with disabilities and/or mobility needs, as well as electric safety breaking features. Also, the Me:Go’s LED lights pr M&H Automotive US specializes in importing, developing and manufacturing electric vehicles under the brand name Me:Go. The vehicles were first developed in 2005 as a university project or technical college “challenge” between the business studies, mathematical and engineering departments for students to come together and produce a state of the art electric vehicle. In 2010 with updated technical standards the vehicle was further developed and engineered by German engineers, in the same place where Audi was founded with a great history in car engineering, and then in 2012 M&H Automotive was founded. M&H Automotive US, (Me:Go), a member of the Florida Recreational Trade Association, was founded in 2012 by former executives of a global Fortune-500 company. It is located at 849 South Kings Highway, Fort Pierce. For more information about Me:Go, visit www.YourMeGo.com.
