ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The St. Lucie County School Board has chosen its preferred new leader. The school board unanimously decided Feb. 24 to enter contract negotiations with Wayne Gent, who is to take over for Superintendent Genelle Yost when she retires in June. Gent spent the past three years as the Palm Beach County superintendent, leading the 11th-largest school district in the country. Now he’ll be returning to the county he spent more than half of his 35-year career working as a teacher and principal. “Mr. Gent has come to us with a very strong record,” St. Lucie County School Board member Kathryn Hensley said, adding that his learning curve will probably be nonexistent. Gent’s prior record in St. Lucie County and his
Wayne Gent experience as a superintendent made him stand out from the board’s second leading candidate, Manatee County Deputy Superintendent Diana Greene, board members said. Gent’s resume showed that he had nine combined years experience as a teacher in St. Lucie schools, Okeechobee School District, Hart County Schools

“I know I’m skilled at my craft but that may sound like bragging. Instead, let my clients tell you...”
Joe Mutter, H.A.S.
I made an appointment with a local hearing center, Mutter’s Hearing Center in St. Lucie West, and the ensuing experience changed my life.
I needed to improve the quality of my life by hearing better. I have been wearing my hearing aids since November 2013 and my quality of life has improved greatly. I would never go anywhere else for my hearing healthcare needs... Sincerely Carolyn DuBrin

If you purchase an inexpensive discount hearing aid, you’re just buying a cheap amplifier disguised as a high-tech computer. The majority of friends who bought discount hearing aids are unhappy. In addition, the service after sale that you will need will not come cheaply. When you purchase a hearing aid from Mutter’s Hearing Center, you become a member of the family. G.E. Gardiner - Novelist
“Joe was the first one who could make hearing possible and comfortable. He was patient and kind,” said Dr. Costas. “Joe sat with Aunt Mary until she was comfortable using them and then he made her come back multiple times until he was satisfied. He saved Aunt Mary from a nursing home
Buhrman had tried several hearing aids costing several thousands of dollars but when she met Joe Mutter and tried her hearing aids for the first time, the whole world changed. “I fell down on my knees and thanked God for bringing me to that miracle man, Joe Mutter,”
“Joe was extremely patient and thoroughly explained things in ways anyone could understand. He made me feel comfortable and confident.” “Now, I can adjust my hearings aids to fit the needs of my situation. Now, I can hear everything. I can even hear at the bar at Duffy’s”

Petition denouncing All Aboard Florida reaches 50,000 signatures Brandon Zeris Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITERS
TREASURE COAST — Florida Not All Aboard is celebrating a milestone. “As of today, we are officially over 50,000 people on our petition,” Palm City’s K.C. Traylor, co-founder, said. On Valentine’s Day last year, Traylor sat down at her kitchen table and sent All Aboard Florida a love letter. Well, more like a love-to-hate letter. It was a petition in the name of Florida Not All Aboard, addressed to the Federal Railway Administration and Gov. Rick Scott, posted on Change.org. It was one in a forest of petitions on the social-media web site for everything from opposing quack cures for autism to demanding the releases of political prisoners, along with a smattering of obvious parody petitions. Who would take seriously the upstart group that almost only existed as a new Facebook group
taking on Florida East Coast Industries? Before 2014, Traylor was just one of many folks who occasionally spoke about various issues during public comment at Martin County Commission meetings. “My first goal was 10,000 (petition signatures), and I didn’t know if I could reach it,” Traylor said. “It’s kind of funny now.” In less than three months, Florida Not All Aboard garnered about 11,000 physical and electronic petition signatures against the proposed passenger rail that would cut a swath through Martin and St. Lucie counties without stopping. By May, Florida Not All Aboard had organized a large rally at Flagler Park in Stuart. Florida’s Congressman for District 18, Patrick Murphy, took the stage behind Traylor to make clear his opposition to All Aboard Florida. Not so amazing in itself — a congressman speaking at a rally — until one considers that he had signed

PETITION from page A3 a letter urging federal regulators to hustle on getting the proposed high-speed rail running. Traylor changed his mind. She darkened every elected official’s doorway she could. In June, Senator Joe Negron announced his opposition to All Aboard Florida at a press conference in Stuart. By him were Sarah Heard, then the Martin County Commission’s chairwoman; mayors Troy McDonald, Stuart, and Abby Brennan, Tequesta, along with Traylor, who was placed prominently next to Negron as he spoke.
By that time, there were 18,500 signatures on the petition. St. Lucie County resident Keith Ullrich joined about two months after Traylor started the group, disgusted over the prospect of having 32 passenger trains and 20 freight trains a day running through the Treasure Coast, changing everyone’s day-to-day lives. The most effective way of getting others to join is by educating people at the street level about what is really happening with the All Aboard Florida train plans, Ullrich said. “We had a ‘Shoo Shoo the Choo Choo’ rally back in September at

Archie’s Restaurant in Fort Pierce, and another rally at The Inlet Grill in October. Both events were well-attended by our local politicians, and it made me realize that thousands of concerned residents were angry about the trains’ potential hazards they will bring,” he said. All Aboard Florida announced plans to build a high-speed rail service from Miami to Orlando back in March 2012. The company planned to mostly use existing train tracks along the Florida coast. No one seemed to pay it much mind for two years, until Traylor read an article about All Aboard Florida and saw disaster for the Treasure Coast coming down the tracks. She forayed onto social media and to any community forum she could find with a simple message: “We can and must derail Big Choo-Choo.” The hottest campaign issue for the 18th Congressional District’s Republican primary and general election was who hated All Aboard Florida the most. No one congressional candidate spoke supportively or even neutrally about it. Indeed, in every Treasure Coast political contest, All Aboard Florida came up, and every political candidate opposed it. The issue even arose in the governor’s race. That was happening as the Federal Railroad Administration had All Aboard Florida putting together an environmental impact statement as part of fulfilling its request for an about $1.5 billion Railroad Rehabilitation & Improvement Financing loan. By the end of 2014, the petition swelled to more than 40,000 signatures. In a matter of months, Treasure Coast opposition to All Aboard Florida developed into three groups, Florida Not All Aboard, Citizens Against the Train, and Citizens Against Rail Expansion in Florida. Traylor said they’re friendly to one another, each with a different mission to squash All Aboard Florida. Additionally, the Martin Commis-
sion recently allocated $1.4 million for battling the proposed rail service, and Indian River County’s commission voted to put $2.7 over two years into an ante for combating it. “It’s amazing,” Traylor said. “It was strictly the power of people.” She said half of the petition signatures are gathered in person by a core group of about 30 volunteers who are regularly joined by a smattering of others. The volunteers go anywhere there are people, such as local flea markets. Traylor believes the issue, which crosses political lines, taps into a fundamental human wish to have some control over our destinies, and that’s why opposition has been so successful. “It’s ‘We can’t let some corporation in New York City dictate the quality of life down here,’” she said. Others don’t trust All Aboard Florida executives’ intentions, saying it’s all about freight. “When the passenger train goes bankrupt, they still own the tracks and the right of way, their freight business then gets all the benefits of the taxpayers’ money and the taxpayers get 20-30 freight trains a day running through their cities, blocking traffic and having hazardous cargo running day and night,” Ullrich said. Michael Reininger, president of All Aboard Florida, said in previous interviews that the rail service will start running between Miami and West Palm Beach in 2016. “Depending on the actual date of the conclusion of the environment process, by 2017, we’ll get all the way into the Orlando International Airport,” he said. Traylor believes the petition will have 100,000 signatures sooner than that. The best thing for residents to do is educate themselves, Ullrich said. “If you decide that trains running through your towns is a bad idea, then get involved with one of the anti-train groups, sign petitions online, get your friends and neighbors involved before it’s too late,” he said.

SCHOOLS from page A1 in Georgia and Miami Northwest Christian Academy from 1976 to 1985. Gent was Fort Pierce Central High School’s Assistant Principal from 1985 to 1991, and then he was a principal at Forest Grove Middle School, Fort Pierce Westwood High School and St. Lucie West Middle School from 1991 to 2000. “The only difference I could actually find was Mr. Gent has been a superintendent. That really stuck out to me,” board member Carol Hilson said. “We don’t have time to do training. Whoever comes in has to hit the ground running.” Hilson also pointed out that Gent has thrived in a county that has residents from opposite economic spectrums. Gent’s ability to work with other community leaders was a big factor for board member Troy Ingersoll. In Palm Beach County, Gent worked with 41 municipalities. He’ll only have to worry about four in St. Lucie County. “They say he’s very easy and accessible, and I think that’s one of the things that our superintendent is and will continue to be, is accessible to the community; accessible to our principals, accessible to our teachers and

accessible to the taxpayer.” Board chairwoman Donna Mills said she preferred Greene because she was concerned with Gent’s ability to communicate effectively with the school board. She said some people she spoke in Palm Beach County indicated that was a weakness of his. Ultimately, she sided with the rest of the board. Gent will be expected to become a St. Lucie County resident by July 1. As of press time Tuesday, Your Voice News & Views was not able to reach Gent for comment. The board agreed to enter contract negotiations with Greene if an agreement can’t be reached with Gent.

ST. LUCIE WEST — The word “traditional” doesn’t explain Dr. John Silva too well. Silva, a chiropractor with an office along Southwest Bethany Avenue in St. Lucie West, thinks traditional medical offices — in which patients wait in overcrowded waiting rooms only to speak a few minutes with the doctor — are tired and played out. “This shouldn’t be any different than going to any other business where we expect quality service,” Silva said. When someone makes an appointment, they get sent a new patient package, which includes Google traffic directions directly from the patient’s residence. Also included is a coffee and espresso menu of what’s kept in stock are in the office. When they arrive, they get greeted by an employee at the front

Instead there’s a homey lounge with leather chairs next to a receptionist’s desk. Next is a meeting with Silva while sipping on coffee or tea, if they choose, in a conference room with more cozy brown leather chairs. Afterward, the patients moves to one of several rooms, depending on his or her needs. There’s a fitness studio, outfitted with different pieces of training equipment for rehabilitation. By the studio, there’s a room that resembles a tanning room, but it houses a full-body LED-light therapy bed. Nearby is the LED light therapy room for more localized treatment on a specific area. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Port St. Lucie Police are warning residents of potential thieves who key in on trying to distract elders. The first incident happened Feb. 17 along the 1000 block of Southwest Calmar Avenue, near Becker Road, in Port St. Lucie. A 35- to 40-year-old man, wearing tan pants, a polo shirt and an orange Florida Gators hat tried to fool a 90-year-old woman into thinking he was with the water department, police said. The man told her that a water pipe exploded down the road, and he needed to check her pipes. After 10 minutes of running the water, he told her that she would be reimbursed. At that point she was standing behind her counter and saw another man, wearing a blue plaid shirt, trying to sneak past by crouching behind the counter to head toward the spare bedrooms, according to the police report. She ordered the two men to leave. As they were leaving, she saw another man outside on a radio, talking to someone. They got inside a new, white pickup truck and sped away, squealing tires. She was unable to identify anything else on the

Another incident happened 11 days later along 1700 block of Southwest Southworth Terrace, just south of Crosstown Parkway. A roughly 5-foot-5, 145- to 165-pound man, wearing blue shorts and a white shirt, told a 79-year-old woman that he need to check on a light pole in her back yard. The man said she needed to join him in the backyard. The man was on a walkie-talkie with someone and said he would need just one more minute. She said no and went inside. The man went to his truck and left. While the two were outside, the would-be victim’s sister was inside the home. She said she

Hall had won the right to negotiate a contract with the city two weeks prior, but the Council wanted him to offer some slightly different terms. Hall’s proposal included the $15 million purchase price and a $200,000 deposit to be paid five days after an agreement was made. He also requested a 60-day inspection period, after which, the deposit would become nonrefundable, and a 90-day closing period. Council members said they
would prefer to reduce those timeframes to 30 and 60 days and make $15,000 of the deposit nonrefundable. The council also discussed what to do in case Hall didn’t follow through. One option would be to enter negotiations with Crescendo Development, which placed a $14 million bid to use the complex for medical offices. Another option is to consider any offers that come in between now and the next council meeting. “We would take anyone as a backup offer that met the baseline that the council established at the last meeting,” Mayor Greg Oravec said. If neither of those choices pan out, the building will likely be posted through another request for proposals, though some stipulations may be changed.

Smithsonian expands marine science summer camps at Aquarium
THIS IS WHAT
RETIREMENT LOOKS LIKE
FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Spring is just around the corner, which means now is the time to make plans for summer. The Smithsonian is hosting week-long camps this summer for ocean-loving children and teens, including an additional session of the ever-popular Ocean Adventure Camp and a brand new camp for 15- and 16-year-old marine-scientists-in-the-making. Based at the St Lucie County Aquarium on South Hutchinson Island in Fort Pierce, campers will spend much of their time in, on, and under the water exploring local ecosystems in the Indian River Lagoon and Atlantic Ocean. Activities range from seine netting in seagrass beds and boat trips for younger campers, to kayak and snorkel adventures for older campers. The Smithsonian is offering the following summer camps: • Ocean Discovery Camp (ages 6-8): Session I: June 8-12 & Session II: June 29-July 3 This half-day camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost for the week is $85 for Aquarium members and $95 for nonmembers. Campers will spend a significant amount of time outdoors, including time in and on the water, learning about marine life. • Ocean Adventure Camp (ages 9-11): Session I: June 15-19, Session II: July 6-10 & Session III: July 20-24 This full-day camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost for the week is $135 for Aquarium members and $145 for nonmembers. Campers will learn about local marine ecosystems through outdoor activities, including kayaking, seining, and snorkeling.
Here at The Brennity at Tradition, you can continue living the life you’ve worked so hard for, on your own terms. Enjoy the freedom to participate in as many events and activities as you’d like, or spend your days in leisure. The choice is yours at our beautiful community.

• Ocean Explorer Camp (ages 12-14): Session I: June 22-26 & Session II: July 13-17 This full-day camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost for the week is $155 for Aquarium members and $165 for nonmembers. Campers will gain first-hand experience in ocean science and technology through kayaking, snorkeling and exposure to marine research techniques. • Ocean Ambassador Camp (ages 15-16): July 27-31 This fullday camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost for the week is $175 for Aquarium members and $185 for nonmembers. Campers will join Smithsonian educators for hands-on learning about marine ecosystems, careers, research, and stewardship through outdoor activities, including full-day snorkeling and kayaking outings. “The Smithsonian Summer Camps are the highlight of the summer for my boys. Year after year, they come home with new information about our local marine ecology, amazing scientific facts from time spent at the research centers, and improved kayaking and snorkeling skills,” said Charlotte Rohrbough, a local parent of Smithsonian campers. “The instructors and scientists make learning fun. They do a fantastic job of integrating marine biology and environmental awareness into an entertaining curriculum.” The Smithsonian’s unique location and resources, combined with small camp sizes of no more than 14, provide an engaging and educational summer camp experience. Summer camp registration is open now.

a massage chair. “What I’ve tried to build here is make something different from the traditional medical experience,” he said. That goes for treatment, as well. Absent from his practice is a prescription drug-pushing mentality. “The great thing about this approach is it’s a non-drug approach. There’s no surgery involved, and it’s actually getting to the root. That’s the whole premise behind functional medicine — getting to the root problem of someone’s challenges and using natural methods to work on the whole body.” The problem is, drugs suppress symptoms, but they don’t help a person recover from the problem, Silva said. Negative side effects are another common issue. He’s also branching out to treat peripheral neuropathy — a condition common to those with diabetes, which causes burning pain, tingling and numbness, often in one’s hands and feet. Typically, older generations experience most cases of peripheral neuropathy, but Silva said he’s seeing more people in their 40s develop it due to poor circulation, diabetes, and toxicity from drugs, especially from chemotherapy. As a chiropractor first and foremost, Silva said he often sees

problems stemming from spinal issues with nerves that impact hands and feet. “I’ve dedicated a lot of time in post-graduate studies, hitting the books, looking at the current research and seeing what things are out there and available in the natural realm to actually get to the root cause of the problem and help improve circulation —actually help heal the nerve.” Proper diet and nutrition are imperative for such conditions, and some things should be avoided, Silva said. “There are a lot of toxins in our nation’s food supply that can damage the nerves and complicate circulation of those nerves,” he said. Artificial sweeteners should be avoided, he said. There doesn’t seem to be a consensus, but researchers have published studies and said artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame and Splenda, can affect proper hormone levels and actually increase appetite over time. “Usually, they are promoting that as a diet product. In fact, the funny thing is, if you look at what these artificial sweeteners do to your hormonal system, they actually promote weight gain in the long run.” Monosodium glutamate, or MSG, is another chemical Silva says

DOCTOR from page A14 people should stay away from. It can be harder to stay away from, though, because the name has been changed to avoid FDA regulations, Silva said. “In fact, they make it sound good. One of them is ‘hydrolyzed protein,’” he said. “So you look at the label and oh, it’s got protein. But, it’s just MSG in disguise.” The other culprit he said is basic sugars — not those from fruits vegetables — but overly processed foods, containing corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup. “If people can just reduce, drastically or even altogether eliminate
basic sugar for a period of time, and they’ll see they feel better.” The key is not just look at one possible cause if someone is facing a health problem, Silva said. “We look at the body as a whole, rather just individual systems, and then use natural holistic means and coaching and guidance to help them recover.” Dr. John Silva’s office is at 451 S.W. Bethany Drive, #101, Port St Lucie, Fla. 34986. Office hours are 9 a.m. – noon and 2 – 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Tuesdays and Thursday are by appointment only. One 10-minute lung cancer screening can put both your minds at ease.
Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer. Symptoms usually appear in the latest stages, when it is the deadliest. Low-dose CT lung cancer screening programs for current and former smokers can detect lung cancer at the earliest stages before symptoms appear, improving the cure rate to as high as 90 percent. – Martin Health System is now offering a low-dose CT screening test for only $99 for those at high risk.

Thursday, March 26 you’ll be screaming for the Fab Four as McCartney Mania takes the main stage and it feels like the Beatles invade the Treasure Coast. McCartney Mania brings the Beatles experience to life in a way that will make you feel like you’re hearing the lads from Liverpool, live and in person. Before McCartney Mania takes the stage, you’ll also be able to catch the Mark Telesca Band and a performance from fab female jazz violinist, Jaimy Lynn. It’s an evening that cannot be missed, and it’s brought to you free of charge, courtesy of the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society. On Friday, Jazz Week finally comes to a close with a lively performance by the Pat Pepin Band from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. once again on the waterfront in beautiful, historic downtown Fort Pierce. Where else can you find a week of fabulously live jazz,
blues and professional performance in your own hometown? Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society works all year long to bring music, culture, and creativity to the Treasure Coast, and Jazz Week is kind of its own pre-party before student performers spend the next couple of months auditioning, preparing and playing with the pros in hopes of receiving one of the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society’s annual music scholarships in May. For the performers, volunteers and supporters of the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society, Jazz Week is a chance to share a great gift of music with the community which supports its efforts all year long and shares its love of music and creativity. For the community, it’s a chance to celebrate world class talent right here in our own back yard. the organization. Attorneys must be specially sworn in by the U.S. Supreme Court to appear and argue in front of them. The Swearing In ceremony was followed by a private meeting with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who also is a Life Member of Hadassah and program sponsor. Katz witnessed two oral arguments presented before the nine Supreme Court Justices. She and other program participants met with the Supreme Court’s chief clerk, marshal and librarian, and they received a tour of the U.S. Supreme Court Library and building. Attorney Marcia Coyle, chief Washington correspondent for the National Law Journal and a regular contributor of Supreme Court analysis to PBS’ ‘The NewsHour,’ was the guest speaker at dinner. She provided insight into the justices — how they operate, how they communicate with one another and the process of hearing oral arguments. “This Hadassah program provided me with the ultimate inside look at the U.S. Supreme Court,” said Katz. “It was a once in a lifetime experience. I had a front-row seat to history in the making.” Katz has been with the Flori-
da Guardian Ad Litem Program since 2011, advocating for abused, abandoned and neglected children. She also has been involved in community training and awareness regarding domestic violence for many years. Additionally, she has been an adjunct professor for 10 years in legal studies for AmericanIntercontinental University, Chicago, and Kaplan University, Fort Lauderdale. Her outstanding efforts as a child advocate has been recognized by numerous awards, including Going the Extra Mile Award; Central Region Customer Service Improvement Award; REACH Award; and Outstanding Service Recognition award. Hadassah, The Women’s Zionist Organization of America, founded in 1912, is the largest women’s Zionist membership organization in the United Stated. Nominated for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize, the organization supports the Hadassah Medical Organization in Israel, the most advanced medical research center in the Middle East. In the United States, Hadassah programs include health education, social action and advocacy on many issues important to women and the Jewish community. Katz’s office is located at 584 N.W. Show turns spotlight on community theater Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

FORT PIERCE — The Pineapple Playhouse in Fort Pierce will present a world premiere of a musical 50 years in the making. “Community: the Musical,” written by local residents Randy Earll and Paul Morgan, is based on Earrll’s 50 years of experience in community theater. About 12 years ago, he began to write a musical about those experiences, and, several years ago, composer Paul Morgan joined in. The show was first presented as a workshop at the Pineapple on July 7, 2012. Actors had scripts in hand, and there were no sets or costumes. The goal was to get feedback from the audience about what worked and what didn’t. Earll revised the show, and this production, which will be presented March 5-22, is the first time the musical will be offered as a finished production. Leslie Parker-Earll is directing her husband’s show. He is also performing in it, so she has several challenges. “It’s an undertaking,” she said. “I want to do it so well. It’s his

Professor highlights Gershwin in free concert Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
FORT PIERCE — Dale Rieth is well-known in the arts community as professor of music and director of choral activities at Indian River State College. He holds a doctoral degree from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati and received a Fulbright Fellowship to compile contemporary choral music in Kenya. Professor Rieth will show the community another side when he presents a piano tribute to George Gershwin March 13 at St. Bernadette Church in St. Lucie West. The concert is free and open to the public. Rieth said he chose Gershwin for several reasons. “He has a special place in my heart. There’s a high level of musicianship and construction. I love them all, but Gershwin tried to embrace both worlds - the classical and the popular. There are intricate rhythms and so-
phisticated harmonies. He’s a cut above, in my book.” The concert will feature pieces from both worlds, including ‘Rhapsody in Blue,’ ‘An American in Paris,’ Piano Concerto in F, “Three Preludes for Piano and “Porgy and Bess.” “Especially fun are Gershwin’s own piano solo arrangements of popular tunes from ‘The Gershwin Songbook,’ Rieth said. “There are songs like ‘I Got Rhythm’ and Embraceable You’ from ‘Girl Crazy;’ ‘Fascinating Rhythm,’ from ‘Lady Be Good;’ ‘Love Walked in,’ and ‘Love is Here to Stay” from ‘The Goldwyn Follies;’ ‘Swanee,’ from ‘Sinbad;’ and ‘Stairway to Paradise’ from ‘George White’s Scandals.’” Rieth said that singing will accompany some of the popular tunes. They, of course, will feature the lyrics of Gershwin’s brother, Ira. The two were frequent collaborators until George Gershwin’s death at the age of 39 from a brain tumor. “Their partnership represents one of the most successful writing teams in history,” Rieth said.
“Ira had great skill as a lyricist, and some of the most delightful experiences are his verses, in which he sets up the emotion of the ensuing song with colorful and often story-like imagery.” Rieth said that students are often unfamiliar with the composer. “They need to know about him,” he said. “Once they’re introduced to the music, they embrace it. Some have never heard of Gershwin, but once they are, they think it’s amazing.” St. Bernadette Concert series at St. Bernadette Church, 350 N.W. California Blvd, St. Lucie West presents Indian River State College professor Dale Rieth in a free tribute to George Gershwin March 13 at 7 p.m. No tickets are required. For information, call (772) 2247089 or visit the website www. boldtunes.com. Dale Reith will direct the Concert Choir in excerpts from a major choral work April 16-18 as part of the IRSC spring concert. The IRSC Wind Ensemble will also perform. Tickets are $15 for non-subscrip-
Dale Reith tion holders and $10 for subscribers. Call the box office at 1 (800) 2209915 or visit www.irsc.edu.

PORT ST. LUCIE — What do you get when you mix 34 nice people with freshwater fishing on their minds, with a beautiful, “Old Florida” lake on a pleasant evening in March? Add the rustic amenities of
the Middleton Fish Camp amid a wonderland of the flora and fauna of a lakeside retreat, then season it with a gourmet meal prepared by the legendary back country chef Frank Gamber, and you end up with memories to treasure. The Port St. Lucie Anglers’ annual three-day outing to Blue Cypress Lake in Cen-
tral Florida is one of the most popular club events of the year, for good reason. The club is all about fishing but has enough family events for all ages to qualify for year round, “no guilt” outdoor enjoyment. Middleton’s Fish Camp on

THE LAST FIVE YEARS is a contemporary song-cycle musical that ingeniously chronicles the five year life of a marriage, from meeting to break-up... or from break-up to meeting, depending on how you look at it. The show is an intensely personal look at the relationship between a writer and an actress told from both points of view fresh off its release starring Anna Kendrick & Jeremy Jordon, Curtain Call is presenting THE LAST 5 YEARS exactly where it was meant to be seen- live, up close and personal at 440 Peacock, starring Ryan Owens* and Jenna Pinchbeck.

Hibiscus Children’s Center presents the 20th Annual Dow Finsterwald Golf Classic MARTIN COUNTY — The Hibiscus Children’s Center 20th Annual Dow Finsterwald Golf Classic is in full swing and just around the corner. Be sure to grab your golf clubs on Friday, March 20, at Willoughby Golf Club for a day of friendly competition, great food and prizes and, more importantly, supporting abused children in our community. The tournament is one of Hibiscus’ signature annual events. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch on the patio with a putting contest and a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The tournament is a two-person scramble format, and entry fee is $175. Golf awards, cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres will follow the tournament. This year is very special as we celebrate the 20th anniversary with host and legendary golfer, Dow Finsterwald. Finsterwald, also known as “Finsty,” is a former PGA Champion and 2006 PGA Hall of Fame Inductee, 2007 Memorial Tournament Honoree, PGA Player of the Year and has played on four Ryder Cup teams among receiving many other prestigious golf awards. Finsterwald has said he is “committed to this tournament as long as he’s alive,” and his heart for the children is evident in his two decades of raising over $500,000, all for the children. The live auction will feature great golf packages including Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge, The Loxahatchee Club, Tequesta Country Club, Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club and Willoughby Golf Club. There will be a special prize for a lucky hole-in-
one winner, provided by Coggin Motors. Golfers will also have opportunities to win other auction items and fun contest prizes. The golf tournament benefits abused, abandoned and neglected children with 100 percent of the proceeds directly impacting the lives of children in the community. Special thanks to event co-chairs Chris Kruth, Cynthia Goings and Carol Holth. The presenting sponsor is Panera Bread, and event sponsors are William Hauke, Richard Allen and Bill McDonald. Sponsorship packages that include foursomes and recognition for your business are still available. Hibiscus Children’s Center, founded in 1985 by LaVaughn Tilton, is a nonprofit organization serving Martin, Indian River, Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties. The mission of Hibiscus Children’s Center is to maintain a safe shelter for children who are abused, abandoned and neglected by providing prevention, residential, assessment, and recovery programs. Hibiscus Children’s Center also prepares our children for their future by constructing programs so that our children acquire an education, attain emotional and physical well-being, achieve career readiness, and gain independent living skills. In addition, Hibiscus addresses the problem of abuse with mental health services, prevention services for families in crisis, sexual abuse services for victims and their families and provides enhanced services for children including literacy, educational and enriching activities. The Thrift Store, located in Stuart, helps to offset costs for the programs. The Village and Shelter are funded, in
part, by the Florida Department of Children and Families through Devereux Community Based Care of Okeechobee and the Treasure Coast. An additional $2.5 million must be raised each year by community donations, special events and grants. Hibiscus is also a United Way affiliated organiza-
tion. Hibiscus speakers are available to present to your group. For more information, Please register by visiting Hibiscus Children’s Center, 2400 N.E. Dixie Highway in Jensen Beach, or online at www.HibiscusChildrensCenter.org or call (772) 334-9311, Ext. 404.

It’s very exciting.” Leslie Parker-Earll also directed the workshop production and said it was helpful in fashioning the finished work. “The workshop gave us many good ideas,” she said. “We added depth to a character or two added a song and moved a song for a stronger ending to the first act. It was very helpful. People were very positive. It was exciting to open it up to questions.” Parker-Earll said her husband really drew on his experiences. “They say ‘write what you know,’” she said. “My husband and I actually met at the Pineapple 23 years ago. I was doing ‘Nunsense,’ and he was doing sound. He said it was the last time he’d ever do sound. It was

There are familiar faces and some who are new to the Pineapple stage, making it a typical community theater production. The water is beginning to warm up to excite the fish while it’s not too hot to spend the entire day doing what you came for. After a winter of winds and chilly temperatures, most club members are eager to bend their rods. There’s enough action to keep the fishermen happy and the mosquitos are at a minimum. Later in the summer, the fishing gets intense, the camp more popular and reservations are required long in advance. The Port St. Lucie Anglers meet on the third Thursday of every month at the Botanical Gardens on Westmoreland Boulevard, Port St. Lucie. Members’ numbers are approaching 200 and growing. Members enjoy guest speakers off-shore, inshore and back country fishing, as well as environmental issues that affect everyone.
