PSL enters Crosstown Parkway bridge lawsuit as defendent Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PORT ST. LUCIE — Rather than sit on the sidelines, the city of Port St. Lucie will be intervening as a defendant in a federal lawsuit that looks to prevent
the Crosstown Parkway bridge extension. In a unanimous vote Monday, the City Council opted to join the Federal Highway Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation as defendants versus the St. Lucie County Conservation Alliance and Indian
Riverkeeper. In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs claim the Highway Administration and the Department of Transportation violated the Federal Transportation Act for choosing a route that puts the

PORT ST. LUCIE — The deadline for Jupiter investor James Hall to submit his $200,000 deposit to buy Tradition Studios has passed, leaving the city to reconsider its options on the former Digital Domain location. Hall had until 5 p.m. Monday, but he let it pass after requesting the deposit amount be reduced to $100,000. He also had issue with $15,000 of the deposit being non-refundable but said he would still be willing to pay it. “Whether I close or not; the City gets $15,000 either way. And If I proceed to close, a lot more,” he wrote in a letter to the city. “Whether the deposit is $100,000 or $200,000 is irrelevant. The extra $100,000 is just an unneeded burden.” James Hall won the right to negotiate a deal for Tradition Studios after trying for seven months to get the Port St. Lucie City Council to buy into his vision. He said he planned to use the

CROSSTOWN from page A1 environment at risk. The plaintiffs aim to get the proposed route, dubbed 1C, over Savannas Preserve State Park, and ending at Village Green Drive, changed to a less environmentally compromising one, Indian Riverkeeper Marty Baum said. “We do not oppose a bridge. We oppose route 1C,” Baum said. “We contend this city’s preferred route, 1C, is illegal and indefensible in court.” The chosen route is the most damaging to the state park and the most expensive, Baum said. The cheapest option would have saved the city about $42 million on the $160 million project, but there’s little the city can do now to change plans that have been in motion for about 20 years, Councilwoman Shannon Martin said. “If that were even an option for us, that would be another 20 years in the making, and that $42 million would quadruple 20 years from now,” she said. City manager Jeff Bremer said there would not be any way for the city to change the route at this stage and still have the project completed by the 2018 target. Former Indian Riverkeeper George Jones said a different route would prevent the city from having to consider defending itself from any legal action.
File photo About 40 people met Aug. 20 at the Halpatiokee Trails entrance to protest the Crosstown Parkway Bridge because of its danger to the wetland. “I would ask you not to retain legal counsel, not to continue to waste my money as a taxpayer pursuing this issue. This has more issues than you can shake a stick at,” he said. “You would have a bridge already, probably, had you not wanted to pursue the taking of state park lands
that belong to all of the people of the state of Florida, not just the people of Port St. Lucie.” The city plans to hire Nason Yeager law firm, out of West Palm Beach, as its counsel, but financial terms haven’t been revealed. Mayor Greg Oravec said he understood residents’ protests,
adding that he, too, would have preferred a different route — perhaps ending at Walton Road due to it making more sense. “But, I’m not prepared to blow up the process and go through another 10 years to get something done that should have been done 20 years ago,” he said.

Sheriffs express concern about All Aboard Florida — told not to worry STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
17970
TREASURE COAST — Sheriffs usually shy from saying much of anything about any issue that’s become political. All Aboard Florida has definitely become political. “In this case, public safety trumps any concerns I may have
about politics,” Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said. Last month, sheriffs Ken Mascara, St. Lucie; Deryl Lore, Indian River; and Snyder sent a joint letter to All Aboard Florida expressing concerns about response times if the proposed high-speed passenger rail cuts through the Treasure Coast as planned. “Our jurisdictions have significant populated areas bifurcated
by railroad tracks,” the letter reads. “This presents a real-time dilemma. If rail traffic significantly increases, passing trains can and will prevent emergency first responders from expeditiously reaching point of need.” About a week later, Michael Reininger, president of AAF, responded in a letter back. Don’t worry about it, was his answer. “With an improved rail infrastructure, no first responder or emergency personnel will be delayed at a grade crossing any longer than they would be at a typical traffic light,” he wrote. “All 32 of All Aboard Florida’s planned train crossings will clear a grade crossing in less than 60 seconds — or less than two minutes of total crossing-closure time an hour for the hours our service will operate.” Snyder said that’s hogwash. “A red light, my deputies can get around that with lights and sirens,” he said. “They can’t do that with a train.” All Aboard Florida is projecting to run 32 trains a day between Miami and Orlando, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The company plans on starting limited service between West Palm Beach and Miami by next year. In a previous interview Reininger said that All Aboard Florida will reach Orlando not long after. “Depending on the actual date of the conclusion of the environment process, by 2017 we’ll get all the way into the Orlando International Airport,” he said. However, Treasure Coast governments aim to derail that plan. On Feb. 17, the Martin County Commission created a $1.4 million fund to combat the proposed passenger rail. On the same day, Indian River County’s commission voted to put $2.7 over two years into an ante for combating All Aboard Florida. While St. Lucie hasn’t created a specific fund to derail the train, it’s been heavily involved
in numerous actions to challenge it. Florida Not Aboard — one of the most visible opposition groups — plans on asking St. Lucie to create a dedicated fund during public comment at a meeting that’ll occur before publication. Commissioner Tod Mowery said he’ll consider the requests carefully. “For our county, we may or may not go in that direction,” he said. “In terms of legally fighting it, we’re already there.” Snyder, who authored the joint sheriffs’ letter, said he has only one concern about All Aboard Florida — roads and train tracks intersect and that stops emergency vehicles. “I can’t go around it, I can’t go over it,” he said. “It stops my cars.” Martin’s top cop hopes that AAF will consider a request many opponents have made — to move its proposed route to tracks owned by CSX Transportation. Those tracks run westward through Okeechobee toward Winter Haven. “I would much prefer the trains out there. It takes pressure off my heavily populated areas,” Snyder said. However, the company has emphatically said it won’t consider moving the route from tracks owned by Florida East Coast Industries, All Aboard Florida’s parent company.

TREASURE COAST — Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.6 percent in February. The Sunshine State hasn’t seen that number since about the same month seven years ago, 2008. The Treasure Coast continued to see strong, if at times slow job, gains along with the rest of the peninsula. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity released its monthly jobs report, and revised numbers for 2014, on Friday, March 27. St. Lucie came in with a not seasonally adjusted jobless rate at 6.4 percent. In January, it was 6.8. A year ago, the county was at 8.7 percent unemployment. Martin boasted a not seasonally adjusted rate of 5.5 percent in February, compared to 5.5 the month before. The county had a 6.4 percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in February, 2014. Taken together, the counties form the Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area, MSA. The MSA had a not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 6.1 percent in February, down from 6.3 in January. The MSA had a not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 7.9 percent the year before. Of the counties’ about 199,000 workers, close to 187,000 had work in February. For the about 13,000 who don’t, the Martin County Career & Job Fair will be

on April 22 at Indian RiverSide Park, 1691 Shearwater Drive, Jensen Beach. The job fair is sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans of America’s Stuart chapter, 1041, the Business Development Board of Martin County and CareerSource Research Coast. It’ll emphasize manufacturing jobs. About 100 have been added to the area in the last 12 months, about 1.75 percent of the 5,700 jobs the Port St. Lucie MSA has gained this year. The fair will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Military veterans can attend an hour before others. Additionally, employers who have veterans hiring preferences will have American flags on their tables. Before anyone gets into the room to talk to employers, they’ll have to go through an orientation. That orientation includes members of the Palm City Action Team looking over resumes and creating new ones with job seekers if needed. Tom Lytle is the team’s coordinator. He said many veterans need a helping hand turning their military records into legible resumes. Many members of the action team are veterans who also have experience in human resources. “(We look at) what are the soft skills and hard skills they have
and translating that to a language that would mean something to an employer,” he said. “Part of that is getting rid of the (military) jargon that’s meaningless to employers.” The Palm City Action Team is a function of the Palm City Presbyterian Church’s men’s group. It’s helped with the Martin County Job Fair since they started in 2013. Team members noticed that many of the job seekers they were helping were women. “I said, ‘We’ve got to get some women on our team,’” Lytle said. So they did. “Our group has got nicely (diversified).” Odaly Victorio, communications coordinator at CareerSource Research Coast, said the job fair is “regional” and is being promoted in Indian River and Okeechobee counties, as well as St. Lucie and Martin counties. The unemployment rate is calculated using a variety of methods. Among them are telephone interviews with workers, those who are able to work and report not having jobs, but looked for employment in the previous 30 days, are counted as unemployed. Discouraged workers — those who are able to work and want jobs, but have not sought employment in the previous 30 days — are not counted in the unemployment figure. Many call

this “shadow unemployment,” and it’s inherently difficult to track due to variations for why people don’t seek jobs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the national labor participation rate — the percentage of those able to work, or seek jobs, that do, edged downward over the year from 63 percent seasonally adjusted to 62.8 percent. Participation rates are affected by a variety of factors that can be seen as positives and negatives. Florida and the Treasure Coast have had an increasing number of workers and lowering unemployment. To find out more about the upcoming Martin County Career & Job Fair, go to www.bdbmc.org.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — GHO Homes is one of the leading building companies in the area, and it’s expanding. Owner Bill learned a lot of what he knows from his father, Dan Handler. Dan started the company 32 years ago, and Bill said they’ve been in the area for about 25 years. GHO Homes began building in St. Lucie West in 1996, and Bill took over as CEO in 2000. There are several reasons for GHO Homes’ long-term success, Handler said. The first is having a reliable staff that cares about client relationships. “A lot of the guys who work with us have been doing this for over 20 years,” he said. “If you do things right, you keep your friends and build your trust with

everyone.” Another thing Handler says he strives for is innovation, because churning out a bunch of homes without the right features isn’t going to make any potential buyers happy. “We change our designs a great deal and try to stay cutting-edge. We want to hear what the buyer wants and tailor it around that,” he said. GHO Homes has a full-time designer on staff who works to make sure clients get what they want out of their investment. “We’re very personal in how we design. That’s one of the things I’ve learned over the years of doing this … what my dad taught me is you do it right. We don’t mess around with that,” he said. GHO Homes may be showing up more frequently as the company looks to increase its presence in St. Lucie County, he said. They’re nearing the final building phase in Bedford Park, in Tradition, with limited homes available, starting at $223,990. “We’re now in Oak Alley and Meadowood in Fort Pierce. We’re breaking ground in Tradition in Victoria Parc. We’ve got a new design studio we’re working on with color selections and kitchens in Indian River County,” Handler
Bill Handler said. The Victoria Parc homes start at $229,990 and have two- and three- bedroom floor plans, with a den and two-car garage with many on waterfront lots. In the future, Handler said Tradition will be a focal point. “It’s the largest and most-established master community around,” he said. “Its location is incredible, the infrastructure is great, the people running it are wonderful. As far as building goes, it’s the place to be,” he said. building for its original intended purpose — a digital effects studio. Though, Hall said he never had a deal set in stone with former Digital Domain CEO, John Textor, he said he would be open to having Textor’s new company, Pulse Evolution Corporation, as one of the tenants. The news comes a week after the City Council unanimously voted to join the state’s lawsuit against Textor and other Digital Domain executives and partners. Hall said that decision would seriously affect his ability to succeed in Tradition Studios, which is why he wanted the deposit reduced. Councilwoman Michelle Berger said Hall’s potential tenants were never discussed with the city and should not have had any bearing on the deal. “The contract itself did not say it was contingent upon him getting tenants,” she said. “The fact that he now wants to make it a contingency issue is absurd.” Before news broke of Hall missing the deposit deadline, John Textor said he’d be re-evaluating his company’s future in Port St. Lucie — if the city continues with the lawsuit — because it’s tough to do business in a city that doesn’t want him there.
WWW.YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM “If they sell the building and know that the guy wants to bring me in there, then it’s a weird time to sue me,” Textor said. The Council will likely discuss the sale at the next council meeting. Potential outcomes are: Crescendo Development, a company looking to use the space for medical offices, will get the opportunity to negotiate a deal; Hall’s terms will be renegotiated; or the city will go through the request for proposal process all over again. The lawsuit against Textor If the state-led lawsuit against former Digital Domain executives pays off, Port St. Lucie will now get a payout. The Port St. Lucie City Council unanimously voted to join the lawsuit lawsuit against the leaders of the now-bankrupt company, which cost the city about $50 million — not counting debt service — since the digital effects company shut down in 2012. The plaintiffs claim the executives fraudulently acquired funds for the studio by ignoring standard methods in getting state financial aid approved. The state first gave Digital Domain $20 million.

PORT ST. LUCIE — A Port St. Lucie man likely thought he got away scot-free with stealing an Apple iPad at the St. Lucie West Wal-Mart when a few months went by without a peep from police. That changed quickly. Police learned of the man’s identity, Robinson Tavarez, and got a warrant and searched his home along the 5000 block of Northwest Edgarton Terrace March 24. Tavarez was not around, but he could be facing more charges after police found a marijuana-growing operation set up in his garage. When police entered the residence, they were greeted by Ingrid Hernandez, who was wearing white gloves and had a pair of pruning scissors in her hand. She was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana over 20 grams, cultivating/producing marijuana, and possession of a controlled substance without

The ABCs of COPD
APP FINANC LY FOR IN WEBSIT G ON OUR PRIVAC E IN THE Y OF OWN H YOUR OME
COPD may be a complicated acronym — Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease — but its definition is simple: it’s a disease that makes it hard to breathe. It is almost always caused by damage to the lungs that developed over many years, virtually always from smoking. Often, COPD is a mix of chronic bronchitis and emphysema that worsens over time. Once your lungs have been damaged, there is no way to reverse what has occurred. However, there are ways to prevent more damage and improve how you feel.

The best way to keep COPD from starting or getting worse is to not smoke. Even if you’ve smoked for years, quitting will slow down additional damage to your lungs. Remain as active as possible. Avoid bad air and irritants such as secondhand smoke, air pollution, chemical fumes and dust. Get vaccines — especially flu vaccines. If you have COPD, you should be getting an annual flu shot. Pneumonia and pertussis (whooping cough) vaccines are also important preventive measures.

The good news
Remember you can prevent, help or lessen your chances of COPD. STOP SMOKING. Or, even better, don’t start. The American Lung Association website, www.lung. org/lung-disease.org, has many ways to help. See your doctor or clinic if you have any symptoms of COPD, especially if you’re over age 45 and a current or former smoker. Tell your doctor if you have family members with COPD. Early detection is key to successful treatment. Most lung disease can be helped by treatment, and you can live a longer and better quality life. Congressman Patrick Murphy aims to become Senator Patrick Murphy. “I’m running for the U.S. Senate for the same reason I ran for Congress in 2012 — Washington is full of hyper-partisan politicians who can’t, or won’t, get anything done, and Florida deserves better,” he said in a press release. No other candidate has announced a bid for the seat Sen. Marco Rubio now occupies. Rubio is counted among likely 2016 presidential candidates. At press time, no one has announced a candidacy for the 18 Congressional District seat Murphy now fills. The announcement means something else — Murphy is leaving the House of Representatives. The two-term Congressman beat two veterans in general elections, Allen West in 2012 and Carl Domino in 2014. “After the 2012 elections, everyone was watchful,” said Ed Maxwell, first vice president of the Vietnam Veterans of America Stuart chapter, 1041. “Murphy was
proactive on veterans’ issues.” Frank Maitland, commander of the American Legion Post 399, Palm City, said Murphy turned out to be good on veterans’ issues. “I talked to him a few times, personally, one-on-one,” Maitland said. “He wasn’t a veteran, so he wanted to get more information.” However, not all the veterans in Murphy’s district feel he’s been a friend. “Murphy, I don’t think he’s done anything special for the veterans,” Paul DeYoung, a Port St. Lucie member of the Disabled American Veterans and American Legion, said. While Murphy isn’t on the House Veterans Affairs Committee, he is a member of the bicameral Congressional Veterans Jobs Caucus. The caucus’s primary initiative is the I Hire Veterans program. Murphy sponsored the Reducing Barriers for Veterans Education Act of 2014, and Responsive and Efficient Appeals Courts for Heroes Act of 2014. The first bill is intended to give users of the Post-911 Educational Assistance Program help with application fees to colleges and universities. The second to allow
Congressman Patrick Murphy the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims to hear class-action appeals. Murphy recently testified to the Veteran Affair’s subcommittee on Economic Opportunity about the first bill. He’s seeking co-sponsors to reintroduce the second, according to his staff. Additionally, Murphy has written letters co-signed by numerous other representatives to various federal agencies about speeding up the Department of Veterans Affairs’ claims process.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Joe Cocker sang about how he got by “with a little help” from his friends, and it resonated with millions. The same is true for the Boy Scouts in St. Lucie County in 2015. And while much has been made over the boys of

Scope of Practice
“I think he’s been aware of and worked on a number of veterans issues,” Maxwell said. “There’s not a lot a freshmen congressman can do.” Also popular with many veterans, Murphy worked with Boy Scout Nicolas Cocoves to erect a Purple Heart memorial and flag pole at his district office in Stuart, 171 S.W. Flagler Ave. Nevertheless, in one of the most expensive campaigns in Congress’ history, Murphy pulled an upset win over a popular Army veteran. That was in the 2012 race for the newly minted 18 District, St. Lucie, Martin and the northern part of Palm Beach counties. Only about 2,500 votes separated the two. With such a narrow win, Murphy had a lot to prove to his new constituents who’d done what he hadn’t — served in uniform. When he faced Domino in 2014, Murphy handily beat the Navy veteran with 151,253 against 101,778 votes throughout the 18 Congressional District. That’s 59.78 percent against 40.22, a 19.56 percent separation favoring Murphy. Between St. Lucie and Martin counties, there are about 107,000 registered Republican voters. Democrats claim 102,000 registrants. Another 63,000 voters
registered in minor parties, or without affiliation. That scratches the power of party loyalty found in other districts. It’d be difficult, if not impossible, to win the district without at least moderate support from veterans. There are slightly more than 60,000 in the district, and veterans have an above-average voting rate. DeYoung, Maitland and Maxwell said they hope that the Democratic and Republican parties take note of the number of veterans in the district and groom veterans to run for it. “I would love to see more veterans take an active role in our local and national governments,” DeYoung said. Maitland said whoever runs for the district should take a cue from Murphy, who was a lifelong Republican before switching parties for the 2012 election. “He worked both sides of the aisle, which is a good thing,” Maitland said. Maxwell said Murphy’s announced Senate run is fresh and no one in the veterans community is really looking at the 2016 congressional race yet. But, they will. “We have no idea who’s really going to be running or how the field will shape up,” he said. “Anybody who runs will have to make a sincere effort to be friendly to veterans.”

SCOUTS from page A21 the St. Lucie Friends of Scouting, a group created by Van Duzer on behalf of all the scouts in St. Lucie County, donations in excess of $38,000 have been collected to help ensure that every Boy Scout in St. Lucie County has a chance to enjoy the opportunities and lessons of scouting. The volunteer group, St. Lucie Friends of Scouting, is made up of a large and diverse group of community leaders, including Fort Pierce Mayor Linda Hudson and Port St. Lucie Mayor Greg Oravec, Sheriff Ken Mascara and members of both the Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie Police Departments, Fire Chief Ron Parrish, Judge Tony Schwab, St. Lucie County Property Appraiser and former Senate President Ken Pruitt, and a host of business and nonprofit leaders. Together, the group has worked to ensure that all scouts in St. Lucie County can experience scouting and its many opportunities and life skills lessons. The group is also focusing on a service component, which is an important part of scouting itself. Each month, scouts from throughout St. Lucie County will gather to participate in a collective com-
munity service project. On April 11th, the entire scouting population of St. Lucie County will be volunteering in a Coastal Cleanup Day at Harbour Pointe Park in Fort Pierce, with a morning cleanup followed by a free lunch for volunteers. May’s activity will take place in Port St. Lucie, thereby covering volunteerism in both Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie and setting a precedent for alternating projects in the months to come. It’s an ambitious agenda to try to connect all the scouts and provide opportunities for the thousands of local youth who need wholesome, community-related activities and options to be made available, but Van Duzer and the St. Lucie Friends of Scouting are confident they are on the right track by working together. If you’d like to learn more about the upcoming Coastal Cleanup Project, which is open to all community members, not just scouts or if your business or organization would like to provide sunscreen, uniforms (gently used), equipment, drinking water or volunteers, please call please contact Scott at The VanDuzer Foundation at (772) 528-3467 today.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Expanded job training in Okeechobee has taken a major step forward with the new Multi-Functional Industrial Laboratory at the Indian River State College Dixon Hendry Campus. Members of the community toured the state-of-the-art facility on March 24 to learn more about the training programs and view students in action. The Open House marked a year since the IRSC District Board of Trustees approved $290,000 to create the modern 2,700-square-foot laboratory for new and expanded occupational programs. The lab features flexible space that can be easily adapted to instruction in the trades, customized training for new industries and other opportunities to support workforce and economic development throughout the county. “Hands-on training in the trades is extremely important for workforce development in Okeechobee,” said Dr. Edwin R. Massey, IRSC president. “The opening of the Multi-Functional Laboratory underscores the College’s commitment to expansion of practical workforce training at the Okeechobee Campus.” Since March of 2014, the college has introduced programs in

Demonstrations related to these and other programs in health care, automotive service, fire science, child care and office skills were featured at the March 24 Open House. New initiatives include award of a $127,000 USDA grant to IRSC to recruit women and minorities from Okeechobee into bachelor’s degree programs in science, technology, engineering and math, with a special focus on related careers in agriculture. Students from middle school through high school and college will participate in workplace experiences, field trips, career fairs and mentoring from industry partners. IRSC and a consortium of local industries and employers are planning to create the Heavy Equipment Mechanics Training Center at the Dixon Hendry Campus, developed in direct response to the local need for mechanics specializing in heavy equipment, including diesel engine and industrial equipment repair. DEADLINE from page A14 The only thing the city will have to pony up is attorney fees, if they win the case, said Bill Scherer, the attorney leading the case. “The city will have no out-ofpocket expenses period. This is going to be a full contingent fee. If we don’t collect anything, we won’t get paid,” Scherer said. “I think we will collect something for us and you.” Mayor Greg Oravec said it’s an easy decision, with no risks involved, going after money owed to the city. “Let’s sell that building, right? Let’s close that sucker … and let’s see if we can get every dollar back we can for the citizens of Port St. Lucie,” he said. John Textor sent an email to the council and some city staffers saying the city would be subjecting itself to be liable for being part of a frivolous claim under Florida Statute 57.105. Textor says he’s not worried about the lawsuit even making it to trial because it’s very likely the case would get dismissed due to Scherer previously representing Textor in a similar case. Scherer denied ever representing Textor, in a previous interview, though.
“I cannot believe they are so willing to hire a guy who’s undoubtedly going to be disqualified,” Textor said. “There isn’t any chance a judge would see this case through. “They’re just going to shake down a bunch of people and then want to sit down with the insurance companies and get a handout.” The lawsuit names 23 defendants, some of which former Digital Domain CEO John Textor contends had nothing to do with the decision to move the company to Florida. Despite being one of the reasons Hall backed off from buying Tradition Studios, the move to join the lawsuit was more about keeping Port St. Lucie residents happy. Vice Mayor Linda Bartz said it’s a win-win for the city. “I think that it’s time for us to move forward and this hopefully will be a good thing for us, and if they want to expend the time, the energy and the money and we don’t have to — but there is a possibility that we can benefit from it, then I think it’s time to take action,” Bartz said. The city council will have an attorney/client session at a future date, once the city’s claims are added to the complaint.

Auditions will be April 11 and April 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the WQCS studios on the Main Campus of Indian River State College in Fort Pierce. The radio station is located in the center of campus under its 500-foot radio tower at 3209 Virginia Ave. in Fort Pierce. Students auditioning for the one-hour radio special must be under the age of 21, perform classical, Broadway or jazz music as a single performer, duets, ensembles and more on instruments and in vocal performances. Each audition is 15 minutes, with the music selection less than four minutes. The performances will
be recorded, and the students will be notified if they have been selected for the program. WQCS has presented Young Musicians Spotlight for more than 20 years. Over the years, students from Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin and northern Palm Beach and south Brevard counties have turned out for the auditions. Students selected for the program present their music on piano, cello, brass, violin, vocals and more. In December, one of WQCS’s previous winners on Young Musicians Spotlight performed at Carnegie Hall with a student group and as a soloist. Please contact Michele Peters at (772) 462-7813 with questions. Students can complete an application form online at www.wqcs. org home page to schedule an audition time. Bring a printed copy of the application to the audition. Shann’s Tax Service is the underwriter for Young Musicians Spotlight.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The story of Missoula Children’s Theatre is as charming as the productions they stage. Jim Caron’s car broke down in Missoula, Mont., in the 1970s, when he was on his way to a wedding. While he was waiting for car repairs, Caron auditioned for a role in “Man of La Mancha.” He became friends with Don Collins, who was also in the show. Caron decided to stay in Missoula, and the pair put together a group of adults who staged plays for kids in the local movie theater. They were soon touring the Mountain States. Eventually, the group added kids into the mix, but when bad weather prevented them from traveling with children needed to play the dwarves in a production of “Snow White,” they came up with the idea of casting local kids. Today, the kids are the stars of the Missoula Children’s Theatre as it travels to all 50 states and Canada. Two professional actor/ directors hold auditions and cast 50-60 local children in full-length original musical productions. The goal, in addition to a good time, is to develop life skills through participation in the performing arts. Missoula Children’s Theatre

has been a summer staple at the Sunrise Theatre for several years. They return this summer for four camps, each lasting 4-1/2 days. On the fifth day of each camp, the campers rehearse and stage an evening show, complete with costumes and sets that travel with the group in its big red truck. The camps are a partnership between the Sunrise Theatre and the Sunrise Theatre Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps bring the performing arts to children in the community. Each camp has a maximum of 64 students ages 6-18. The cost for each week-long program is $125 per child. No advanced preparation or training is required. Some older students may be cast as assistant directors to help with the technical aspects of the production. This year’s offerings begin with “Peter and Wendy.” The workshop/camp is June 15-19 and the performance is June 19 at 7 p.m. The “Sleeping Beauty” workshop/camp will run from July 13-17, with a performance July 17 at 7 p.m. “The Little Mermaid” workshop/ camp will run from July 20-24, with a performance July 24 at 7 p.m. The season closes with “Red Riding Hood.” The workshop/
camp will run from Aug. 3-7, with a performance Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. John Wilkes, the Sunrise’s executive director, spoke about what the program means to the theater and the community. “There’s an identified need for things for kids to do in the summertime,” he said. “This is the eighth year we’ve had four camps, and they’re always sold out. Any of these kids are alumni for many years. They come back as they get older. “The camps represent all sectors of the community. The Foundation gives scholarships to children in need and involves the community. The arts can be life-changing. Sometimes I see kids who walk in introverted. They leave with a lot more confidence. They come out of their shell. Parent feedback is positive. It’s the least expensive camp in the area for a week. It’s wonderful when they put on the performance on Friday night. “Sometimes it’s the first time they’ve been in a theater. Those are our future audiences. We have to keep that going and underscore how important the arts are in a child’s growth.” The Sunrise Theatre is located at 117 S. Second St., Fort Pierce. Registration for Missoula Children’s Theatre programs is open now. For more information, call (772) 4614775 or visit the website, www. sunrisetheatre.com.

thing John does and I’ve shied away from. It’s leaning toward the contemporary and topical, with a few selections from this year’s Tony-nominated revivals: ‘Pippin’ ‘Cinderella’ ‘Peter Pan’ and ‘Les Miz.’ We do multiple selections from Stephen Schwartz and Stephen Sondheim in the 50-minute concert. The other half goes to John.” The program includes a Sondheim medley of “Comedy Tonight” Into the Woods” and “Putting it Together,” followed by choral highlights from “Pippin,’ written by the ‘other Stephen,’ Stephen Schwartz. Then the ensemble will do a medley tribute to Schwartz, including “Colors of the Wind” “God Help the Outcasts” “For Good” “The Spark of Creation” and “Defying Gravity.” The choir will also sing “I’m not That Girl” from “Wicked” written by Schwartz, and “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd” by Sondheim. They will also sing “Never Never Land” from “Peter Pan” and selections from “Cinderella,” including the lovely “Do I Love You Because You’re Beautiful?” The choral portion will end with selections from “The Sound of Music” and “Les Miserables.” Rieth said that every member of the choir will have a solo and the look of the concert will be differ-
ent. “From a theatrical perspective, the uniforms are not overtly formal,” he said. “They’re just black. We will use choral risers but not the traditional, static four risers. They’ll stand on steps and stairs. It will be informal and more interesting visually.” After the intermission, the Wind Ensemble, led by John Southall, will present a variety of pieces, including some that highlight the concert’s theme. There will be medleys from “Les Miserables” and “West Side Story,” as well as a tribute to movie composer John Williams. Also on the program are works by Richard Saucedo, David Gillingham and Robert Sheldon. The performance concludes with the “Funiculi-Funicula Rhapsody.” Rieth said he hopes that the usual spring concert audience will attend, as well as some newcomers. “I’m hoping for a combination,” he said, “It never hurts to build a new audience.” Indian River State College presents the Wind Ensemble and Concert Choir April 16-18 at the McAlpin Fine Arts Center, 3209 Virginia Ave., Fort Pierce. Tickets are $15 for non-subscribers and $10 for subscription holders. Call the box office at 1 (800) 220-9915 or visit www.irsc.edu.

The Ambassadors of Swing present ‘Easter Parade’ in this season’s last dance
Early celebration for 104th birthday FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE WEST — On Friday, March 27, Yvonne Hoag celebrated her 104th birthday with family and dear friends in St. Lucie West at The Lakes Clubhouse. Although she won’t actually be 104 until May 31, many of her water aerobics friends are snowbirds and traditionally celebrate with her in March. She continues to speak four languages and was so happy to speak French with her many friends from the Montreal area. She is such an inspiration to everyone who loves her and always marvels at how many call her “friend.” For gifts, she was given many skeins of baby yarn, with which she knits baby hats to donate to local hospitals.

Come to the Feast of Divine Mercy!
Calling all Catholics to the Feast of Mercy on the Sunday after Easter, April 12th Did you know that the Lord said that this feast would one day be the “last hope of salvation”? Have you considered what would happen to you if you suddenly died in the state of mortal sin? Did you know that in the 1930’s Our Lord Jesus, Himself requested through St. Faustina that a very special Feast of Divine Mercy be established in His Church and solemnly celebrated on the First Sunday after Easter every year? In the Jubilee Year 2000, after many years of study, Saint Pope John Paul II fulfilled the will of Christ by establishing this special Feast of Divine Mercy in the Catholic Church and gave it the name of Divine Mercy Sunday! By God’s Providence, Saint John Paul II died on this feast in 2005.
What is so special about this new Feast of Divine Mercy you might be asking yourself? It is the promise of the total forgiveness of all sins and punishment for any soul that would go to Confession and then receive Jesus in Holy Communion on that very special Feast of Divine Mercy!
Why would Jesus offer us something so great at this time? Jesus told St. Faustina that she was to prepare the world for His Second Coming and that He would be pouring out His Mercy in very great abundance before He comes again as the Just Judge and as the very last hope of salvation. If you have been away from the practice of your Catholic faith, and if you would like to come back into the, one, true Catholic Church, then this is the most perfect opportunity for you, if you are prepared to repent and turn from sin. Many former fallen-away Catholics have taken advantage of this great Feast of Mercy to get a brand new start in life and to be totally prepared to stand before the Lord. Don’t miss out on this incredible gift of mercy that is available in every Catholic Church on Sunday, April 12th of this year!
If you have been away
from the Catholic faith and if you have any questions about coming back home, then come in and talk to a priest at any Catholic Church. The beauty of the Catholic Church is that its teachings and practices are the same at all the parishes. You may have concerns, such as: marriage outside of the Church; un-confessed abortions; or other issues that could be preventing you from receiving Holy Communion or you may have questions about the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Don’t remain in doubt. Call your local parish office to find out the necessary steps to come back to the Catholic faith. Don’t consider yourself as without hope. Our Lord Jesus wants to pardon completely even the worst sinners possible. Remember, Jesus has come for sinners, not the righteous. Jesus said that even if our sins were as numerous as the grains of sand, they would be lost in His Ocean of Mercy. If you are truly repentant of your sins and are well prepared to confess your sins in the Sacrament of Confession, you’ll experience a tremendous peace. You’ll experience a great weight lifted from you and get a brand new start in life! Once you have confessed your sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, then you must continue to practice your faith as a good Catholic. This involves attending Mass every Sunday and on Holy Days of Obligation, supporting your local parish, and confessing your serious sins at least once a year. In Confession, you must be truly sorry for your sins and you must intend to continue to practice your faith.
Jesus is in the Confessional
One of the most reassuring things Our Lord Jesus revealed to us through Saint Faustina includes the several times when He indicated to her that He is really there in the Confessional when we are making our individual Confessions to the priests. Jesus said that every time we enter the Confessional, that He Himself is there waiting for us, and that He is only hidden by the priest. Jesus said never to analyze what sort of a priest that He is making use of, but for us to reveal our souls to Him and that He will fill us with His peace and light.
Jesus said that the greater the sinner, the greater the right they have to His mercy! Don’t continue to carry your sins, Jesus forgives!
To celebrate properly the Feast of Divine Mercy
18075
Some have wondered why Jesus would want us to confess our sins to a priest, but the answer is in the very first instruction that Jesus gave to His Apostles directly after His Resurrection from the dead. On the evening of the Resurrection, Jesus walked through the door of the Cenacle where the Apostles were hiding and said to them “Receive the Holy Spirit, what sins you forgive are forgiven them, what sins you retain are retained”. This was the beginning Confession. For sure, that command was not only for the Apostles to be able to forgive sins, and then to be forgotten, but for that power to be passed on to all the ordained priests of today in the Catholic Church.
and to receive the forgiveness of all sins and punishment, you must go to Confession to a Catholic priest within 20 days before or after Divine Mercy Sunday. Or if you are in the state of very serious or mortal sin, you must always confess them before receiving Jesus in Holy Communion, or you will also commit a sacrilege, which is also a very serious sin. If you haven’t been going to Sunday Mass without any good reason, you may be in a state of serious
sin and you must confess before receiving Jesus in Holy Communion.
