ST. LUCIE WEST — The man behind the plan to convert a 12.5-acre parcel into a small lake to help with stormwater runoff will be its namesake. The St. Lucie West Services District supervisors approved a motion, 4-0, to name the lake after its chairman, Harvey Cutler, PRSRT STD US POSTAGE PAID FORT PIERCE, FL PERMIT NO. 248 ECRWSS

who abstained from the vote. “Harvey came up with what we all thought was a wacko idea, and it turned out to be one of the best ideas we’ve had in a long time,” supervisor Gregg Ney said. “It just felt appropriate to honor him.” When Ney made the motion to name it after him, Cutler gave up the gavel and walked out of the room because he didn’t want it to seem like he pushed the motion. “I stayed away from it. I didn’t
want any footprints on it, but it’s a real honor. I really am delighted. Maybe someday my grandchildren will come over and see it and say, ‘Hey, that’s my grandfather.’” The site, at the northwest corner of Cashmere and St. Lucie West boulevards, was originally the target for a Wal-Mart grocery store, but the city council denied the developer’s plans because of traffic concerns. The city likely would have had to add lanes to
St. Lucie West Boulevard. The city is still five or more years away from that, Port St. Lucie city manager Jeff Bremer said, after the council denied those plans. So, Cutler said he saw an opportunity to help the services district. He said he was never pushy toward services district manager

“I fell on my knees and thanked God for bringing me to that Miracle Man, Joe Mutter.” Carmela Buhrman knows a miracle when she hears one. And the 88 year-old heard one loud and clear after more than 20 years of suffering from profound industrial deafness. Buhrman had tried several hearing aids costing several thousands of dollars, but when she met Joe Mutter and tried her hearing aids for the first time, the whole world changed. “I fell down on my knees and thanked God for bringing me to that miracle man, Joe Mutter,” she said. “You would too, if suddenly you were able to hear sounds you hadn’t heard in over twenty years. I was missing out on so much.” “What a gift I have been given. The whole world opened up for me,” said Buhrman. “From the moment I walked into his office, Joe was gracious and approachable. He takes pride in his work and wants to make sure you are happy. Thanks to Joe Mutter, you can turn your back on me and I can still hear you,” she boasted. Thank you so much Joe!

PORT ST. LUCIE – With a unanimous vote Monday night, the Port St. Lucie City Council gave a strong indication it intends to sell Tradition Studios to Christ Fellowship for $13 million. In fact, the city has already cashed the check the non-denominational Christian megachurch headquartered in Palm Beach Gardens gave the city for the full amount. “Cash is king and money talks,” said Council Member Ron Bowen, who also said Christ Fellowship’s interest in expanding into Port St. Lucie was “a quality of life issue.” Mayor Greg Oravec said, “This deal is real as evidenced by a check that has already cleared.” Passage of the ordinance authorizing the sale of the 115,000-¬square-¬foot former digital animation studio requires the council to approve it on a second reading, scheduled for May 11. Christ Fellowship has until July 13 to complete its

Debt raffling Lack of unity I read the April 24 edition article regarding the cities survey results and that the cities “debt” seems to be the one item that most residents are concerned with. I couldn’t help but wonder if the city would consider a 50/50 quarterly lottery or raffle where
the city and residents can have a financial benefit. With this type of revenue generating concept maybe, over time, the debt can be reduced and/or eliminated. Art Golden St. Lucie West

OUR MISSION We are here to provide our readers with completely unbiased news coverage. Fun and entertaining features about the communities in which they live. For our advertising partners we pledge to provide the most complete consultative and marketing programs possible for the best return on their investments.
We have not been attacked big time by the radical Islamic terrorists because our country is not unified. We are not unified politically, racially and socially. The terrorists are smart. They know if they attacked us, we would forget our differences and become unified as in WWII. We would anniliate them. Are we unified? I think not. Be aware there are groups trying to change our history, demonize our heroes and distort or destroy our traditions. When you hear a politician speak, is he or she sincere or just trying to save his or her job? If you hear a person selling racism, is this legitimate or someone profiting from this? Is big business looking out for the American economy or profiting from our differences? For example, redefining our national holidays, such as George Washington’s Birthday into “Presidents Day” or Christmas into “Happy Holiday.” This might all sound too simplistic, but when are we
going to wake up and forget our hyphenated names, labels, petty differences, self interests and all strive to be Americans for America. We should be on our guard as to what and who has been keeping our country divided. The more informed we are, the better decisions we can make. It is up to us to keep America great. We should be open-minded, tolerant, liberal and conservative. Liberal and conservative views must be balanced. To keep America strong and great, we must all believe in the U.S. Constitution, know our history, be informed, be involved and most of all, believe in America’s exceptionalism. To be unified is to be strong and then no one would dare attack us — ever. Dr. Domenick Scarlato past commander Disabled American Veterans Port St. Lucie

those who have not seen it. But it is really about truth versus deception and you will be on the edge of your seat until the very end to discover who wins and who loses. The truth is, there is much deception and lies not only in the courts, but in each of our daily lives. It doesn’t matter. No matter where you may turn or what the issue is, you will witness people with different opinions at odds
with each other. God tells us that “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes.” A painful reality of life is to learn that the way of a man is steeped in deception and lies. Lies are all around us, even to the point that it has become a normal part of our daily lives. The truth is, we have been conditioned to accept lies and have become desensitized. Lying is the outcome of people being right in

and relationships involving all of the elements in seeking truth and justice both in and out of the courtroom. I think my alltime favorite courtroom drama was “The Verdict” starring Paul Newman. Newman was also one of my favorite movie stars, since his personal life was atypical of the Hollywood jet set. He was a devoted family man, did a great deal for charity and was also a car nut like I am. Anyway, in the movie, he plays a washedup drunken attorney in a medical malpractice case. Newman represents the plaintiff who has become comatose as a result of an operation gone badly. The defendant is a renowned anesthesiologist who just so happens to work for a Catholic hospital. Newman is, of course, up against a brilliant and formidable legal team and stands absolutely no chance of winning. It is a story of redemption and I will not spoil it by disclosing the ending to

here are probably more than a 1,000 different opinions of the role that the trial lawyer plays in the practice of his craft. For the lawyer is, for the most part, employed in situations in which two parties are in conflict and are seeking a legal remedy to the dispute or issue. The arguing attorneys, while each claiming to be on the correct side of the law, present their positions with the objective of settling the case in favor of their client. Usually, the engagement involves a dispute or adversarial event and the outcome usually produces both a winner and a loser. The process attempts to involve common sense and at the same time can be highly technical and complicated. The goal is to win and not necessarily seek justice. Yet, justice is not always served since there is a higher authority: the law. While truth is a necessary element in the process, it may not always play a vital role in determining the outcome. My first exposure to law, like so many of my contemporaries, was through the false prism of television. Depending on the show, the good guy did not always win and justice was not necessarily served. In the old Perry Mason episodes that my parents exposed me to, the truth usually prevailed and the bad guys always caved in at the very last moment during Perry’s brilliant and clever cross examination. More recently, the “Law and Order” episodes will take on a different slant with more losers than winners. Again, there is that climactic moment in the story at the very last moment when the truth is exposed, even though justice has escaped. For me, these Hollywood exposures and mild curiosities have manifested into not just an interest, but a real commitment to better understand the workings

TRADITION — When folks say Wawa these days in Port St. Lucie, they’re probably not crying like a baby or indicating someone told a bad joke. Instead, they’re likely talking about an increasingly popular chain of convenience stores headquartered in Wawa, Pa., that will probably be coming soon to Tradition research park area. Wawa, a chain of convenience stores that has been mostly confined to the northeastern United States until it recently expanded into Florida, wants to build its first Port St. Lucie store at the southwest corner of Tradition and Village parkways. Anne Cox, assistant director of planning and zoning for Port St. Lucie, said she’s noted a big interest in the plans for the store. The Port St. Lucie City Council approved the move at its meeting Monday night. Cox said, though not in these

Dennis Pickle — aside from this one time. “I went in his office and said ‘I don’t want to hear why we can’t, I want to know how we can,’” Cutler said. Pickle said he didn’t think it was a realistic proposition with rumors circulating that the property would cost $10 million. When the past owners, Martin Memorial, agreed to $4.4 million, it seemed like a good idea. The possibility of adding a walking trail and a park — right at the entrance of the district — just added to it, Pickle said. The small lake — really a stormwater retention pond — will serve two positive outcomes, Ney said. First, it prevented the city from having to deal with traffic concerns ahead of schedule by removing a commercial property off the books. That may seem like a negative for many, though St. Lucie West will still get a Wal-Mart grocery store. Plans are in place to open up across the street from the soon-to-be- pond at the former Albertsons. Reduced flooding will be another positive, Ney said. The pond, along with several other projects, will give most areas an additional 3 to 5 inches to work with during a 100-year rain event, Pickle said. While it won’t eliminate flood-
Harvey Cutler ing, it will increase the lakes’ capacities and make it so flooding is drained more quickly after a major rainfall. “You’re always going to see water in the streets here. That’s the way it’s designed. There’s no way we can change that,” Pickle said.

exact words, she wonders why people are gaga about Wawa. In an article published last year, Business Insider tried to explain that, noting that the chain has 1.2 million fans on Facebook and more than 30,000 followers on Twitter. The No. 1 reason, it said, are the hoagie sandwiches, which cost $4.79 and are made fresh at the store. The article noted that Wawa sells various other freshly prepared food items, including soups, salads and wraps. Customers also like using touch screens at the Wawa deli to customize their orders, the article said. Other services that make the chain popular include ATMs without fees, good service, its own brand of drinks and foods and it being open 24 hours a day, Business Insider said. Although Wawa has only operated convenience stores since 1964, it started out in Wawa, Pa., as a dairy farm, “which was named from a local Native American tribe in honor of their favored game, the Canada Goose,” Wawa’s web site states. Before Wawa relocated to Pennsylvania, it started out in
1803 as an iron factory and then became a mill and bleachery in the 1860s, its website states. The dairy farm and processing plant opened in 1902 in Wawa. More than a century later, Wawa has 650 stores, with 400 selling gasoline, according to the website. Wawa stores are located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Florida. Wawa’s first store in Florida opened across the street from Sea World in Orlando, the website said, noting that 50 stores have since opened in the Tampa and Orlando areas. The first Port St. Lucie store will be located on 5.42 acres of property, with the development area, including the convenience store and the gas station, comprising 1.91 acres of that parcel, according a memo Cox sent to the Port St. Lucie City Council on April 15. The convenience store will be 6,119 square feet, she wrote. In addition, according to the memo, the Wawa will have a 590-square foot outdoor dining area and 54 parking spaces, which will exceed the city’s requirement for 31 spaces. The memo notes that the city’s Site Review Committee approved the project on March 25.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Florida Department of Health confirmed a second case of measles last week in an unvaccinated child in St. Lucie County. This locally acquired case was isolated as a precaution as the first case was confirmed and poses no additional risk of exposure to the community. This brings the total cases of measles between St. Lucie and Indian River counties to five. Measles is a serious respiratory disease caused by a virus of the same name (measles). The disease is highly contagious and can spread to others who are unvaccinated. “Clint Sperber, county health officer for DOH-St. Lucie, says vaccination is the most important approach to prevent measles; and we implore healthcare providers to use every patient encounter to ensure that all their patients are up to date on vaccinations, especially before international travel.
In addition, we ask health care providers to be alert to the possibility of measles and be familiar with the signs and symptoms so they can detect cases early.” “We applaud all who have gotten vaccinated or confirmed their immunity in light of the unfortunate cases of measles in Florida this year”, said state surgeon general and secretary of health, Dr. John Armstrong. “Vaccination remains the best way for Floridians and visitors to protect their children, themselves and their communities from what is ultimately a serious yet preventable illness.” People who are particularly susceptible are pregnant woman, infants under the age of 12 months and people who are immunocompromised. Vaccinations are available year round through health departments in Florida’s 67 counties or your local doctor’s office. The department encourag-

It’s Summer Camp Time! Popular summer camps at Lyric set Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

STUART – The summer camp season is almost here and the Lyric’s Awesome Summer Camp is gearing up for the new season. This year’s summer camps are “All You Need is Love,” from June 8-26 and “Imagine That” from July 6-24. Karin Leone is the Lyric Theatre’s director of education and operations coordinator. “Our goal is to use the performing arts to reinforce positive life lessons,” she said. “The nice thing about our camp is our focus is not on training the next big star. We want every kid to
feel like a star in their own right and find their voice. It’s about self-confidence and teamwork. I find, having grown up in theater, that we’re often a gang of misfits. We take these kids and nurture their uniqueness and what makes them different. It’s a safe place to grow in their own skin.” The camp is open to all youngsters. Some may have a background in theater; others do not. “A few kids are really into performing,” Leone said. “Other kids have never set foot in a theater. I am especially fond of taking kids that are especially shy and timid and watching their growth. Parents reach out (to us) during the school year and say their children

It’s Summer Camp Time!
Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

MARTIN COUNTY — There is something for everyone at StarStruck this summer. Campers are invited to create their own camps by combining individual programs covering everything from Creative Movement for Toddlers to “Into the Woods Jr.,” a by-audition program for those in grades 4-12. Jennifer Jones is the program’s artistic director. She said that there are camps that youngsters have been enjoying for years, as well as some exciting new ones. First up is “Camp ANNIE.” The
camp, for grades K-3, runs from June 8-19 and will be taught by Jones and her husband, Peter Jones. “It’s not the full-on show,” she said. “It’s a two-week program with a Friday night performance. It’s customized to the kids and depends on the ages. They sing selections from the show and it’s very popular. Who doesn’t want to be Annie?” CIRQUE Intensive, for currently enrolled Cirque students, runs from June 8-12. For those who want to explore the Cirque experience and learn how to get on the

silks like performers in Cirque du Soleil, there is a Cirque camp for Grades K-5. It also runs from June 8-12. The musical “Into the Wood Jr.,” camp for grades 4-12, runs from June 8-July 5. It is by audition only. “It’s stirred up a lot of excitement,” Jones said. “The kids are over the moon to do such a sophisticated piece and it’s interesting to see how it jumps from movie to stage.” The first of two All Star camps will take place June 22-26 for grades K-4. This is an introductory program where students learn singing, acting and dancing in a no-pressure environment. From July 6-10, “Nuthin’ but Acting” will give students in grades 2-5 an introduction to improvisation and acting terminology. A CIRQUE camp for youngsters in grades 2-5 will take place July 6-10. CIRQUE camp for those in grades 6-12 will take place on the same dates. Acting Intensive, for grades 612, gives students a more indepth look at acting, including characterization, motivation, and speech. It will also be held July 610.
StarStruck’s ‘YouTube Sensation” Program is a new program for grades 4 and older. It runs from July 13-24. “We’re so excited,” Jones said. “It’s brand new. We’re basically going to make a YouTube clip. You can be an actor, director or writer. It’s collaborative. They’ll create a little mini-movie and put it on YouTube. They’ll be using the entire 25,000-square-foot space. There will only be a small number, so people should sign up quickly.” StarStruck traditionally does two musicals in the summer, but this year, they will do “Into the Woods Jr.” and a straight play. Training will be at the Actors Performance Workshop, for grades 6 and older. It runs from July 13-31 and the play will be determined after enrollment. “That’s to make sure there is a role for everyone,” Jones said. “Kids should be doing this because they want to act and have time on stage, not sing and dance.” The littlest ones have Creative Movement from July 27-31. There is a class for those 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 and another one for those 3-1/2 to 4-1/2. Broadway Dance with Maria-Elena brings one of StarStruck’s popular teachers to the fore with

The two camps have themes that underpin the message of the camps. For the first camp, the theme of love is about love of self, family, country, friends and the planet. For the second camp, the theme of imagination allows camper to contemplate unlimited possibilities when they dream about the future. The camp is open to both boys and girls and Leone noted that there is a good balance of the two. Sometimes boys are nervous about an “arts camp” but Leone said that everyone feels welcome at the Lyric’s Awesome Summer Camp. The Lyric’s Awesome Summer Camp will take place at Flagler Place, 201 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart. The first session, “All You Need is Love,” will take place June 8-26. The second camp. “Imagine That,” will take place July 6-24. Camp runs from 9 a.m.4 p.m. Tuition is $375 with a $25 registration fee that is waived for returning campers. are more confident. We stress skills they’ll take through life.” The camp takes place at Flagler Place in downtown Stuart. Campers learn about drama, inclduoing basic acting principles, creative writing, staging, improvisation and stage presence. In music, they learn fundamentals of singing, rhythm, terminology and vocal performance. For dance, they are introduced to a variety of styles, including jazz, ballet and hip hop. “We have great teachers and they learn about lighting, sets and props,” Leone said. “Kids that don’t want to be on stage can be on the tech crew and help with props and scenery. Everyone finds a way to work toward a common goal. They learn that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.” While performing is an important element of the camps, it is not the only one. “We are well-balanced,” Leone said. “In addition to singing, acting and dancing, there is outdoor recreation. We have a field day with events like balloon races,”

es all residents and visitors who have not been immunized to get vaccinated immediately. The department continues to work with community health care and governmental partners in sharing the facts about measles and the benefit of being vaccinated. The MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine is about 97 percent effective if both scheduled doses are received. This means about three out of every 100 fully vaccinated persons may still be affected. For those who do get measles, the illness is likely to be milder after vaccination and they are less likely to spread the disease to others, including people who can’t get vaccinated because they are too young or have weakened immune systems. Measles is spread through the air by breathing, coughing or sneezing and is highly contagious. When a person sneezes or coughs, droplets spray into the air. The virus can live on surfaces or in an airspace where the infected person coughed or sneezed for up to two hours. It can be transmitted from four days before the rash becomes visible to four days after the rash appears. A typical case of measles begins with flu-like symptoms. The symptoms of measles gener-
ally begin approximately seven to 14 days after a person is exposed to someone with measles and include the following: • Blotchy rash • Fever • Cough • Runny nose • Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis) • Feeling run down, achy (malaise) • Tiny white spots with bluish-white centers found inside the mouth (Koplik’s spots) People who develop these symptoms should contact their health care provider right away. Children should be immunized against measles with the combination measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR). Children should receive two doses, with the first at 12 to 15 months of age and the second at 4 to 6 years of age. When vaccinating adolescents and adults, two doses of MMR may be required. People with underlying health conditions should discuss additional booster doses with their health care provider to determine need. For more information about measles and vaccination information, go to http://www.flhealth.gov/ or www.cdc.gov/measles/index. html. Residents who have questions about measles or how to get vaccinated are encouraged to call their local county health department.

TREAUSRE COAST — While Florida’s employment held steady from February to March, the Treasure Coast kept making jobs. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity released its March jobs report on Friday, April 17. The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.7 percent in March, same as for February. However, the Port St. Lucie metropolitan statistical area, MSA, had a not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate at 5.8 percent, down from 6.1 in February. The MSA included all of St. Lucie and Martin counties. St. Lucie County edged down from 6.5 percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment in February to 6.1 percent in March. Martin dropped from 5.5 percent not seasonally adjusted in February to 5.3 percent unemployment in March. “This is our (employment) peak, and now we start going the other way,” Odaly Victorio, communications coordinator at CareerSource
Research Coast, said in a phone interview. “That’s just our seasonality.” She said the Treasure Coast typically sees job declines from April or May to September or October. “The highest unemployment rate peaks in August,” she said. However, Victorio said that there are increases in one employment sector that isn’t subject to the area’s tourist season. “Manufacturing has been improving and it is an industry where there’s money to be made,” she said. “These aren’t minimum wage jobs. It is an opportunity in our area.” The Port St. Lucie MSA gained about 100 manufacturing jobs between March last year and March this year, 5,900 to 6,000, a 1.7 percent change. Additionally, there have been about another 100 jobs added in the related transportation, warehousing and utilities sector. Finding people to fill them has been difficult for employers. The entire state has been experiencing a middle-skills gap in recent years. There are several reasons for that. The recent eco-

CHURCH from page A3 inspection of the property and until July 17 to close the sale. If the deal falls through, the city would have to return all but $15,000 of the $13 million. Completing the sale, however, locks the city into In 2009, the city gave Digital Domain a $51.8 million incentive package — including land and the fully equipped Tradition studio — in exchange for the promise of high-wage jobs. The company closed its doors in late 2012, laying off almost 300 employees, shortly before filing for bankruptcy. Bowen said, “Christ Fellowship is in a position to restore lives and give people hope and faith, so something good can come out of something bad.” Directing his next comment toward former Digital Domain CEO John Textor, who attended the meeting but did not speak, Bowen said, “You left a lot of broken promises and a lot of broken dreams out of Tradition studio.” Textor, who is now chairman of Pulse Entertainment Corp. in Port St. Lucie, sent numerous letters to the City Council and City Manager Jeffrey Bremer asking to meet with city officials to discuss his offer to lease the building at a rate that would more than cover the city’s debt payments on the building. His efforts were brushed aside, In a letter to the council earlier Monday, Textor said Digital Domain “was performing, investing and growing. The operating plan that you once supported was viable, at least until we allowed FP&L/Comvest and Tenor Capital to turn our community project into a financial ploy.” “Unfortunately, while Mayor (Joanne) Faiello and Vice Mayor (Linda) Bartz did their best to ascertain the necessary facts, their efforts were quickly curtailed by the intimidation of Councilwoman (Michelle) Berger and City Manager Oravec who believed

that anger, without information, was their best play to the public,” Textor wrote. “The result of this scorched earth approach to demonize individuals without facts, is that no plan other than the lender-sponsored plan was ever filed with the court to help the company reorganize and resume operations.” After the meeting, Textor said, “I’ve done everything I could to try to rebuild and repair the city and formally offered to pay the principal and interest on the bonds, but couldn’t even get it discussed.” Then Textor said, “Christ Fellowship will be great for the community. This is God’s way of telling me to move on.” The sale to the church would rid the city of $427,000 in annual maintenance costs and would reduce the city’s debt on the building to $53.3 million. As a nonprofit, the church would not have to pay the building’s $73,176 annual tax bill to the city or about $245,000 to St. Lucie County and other taxing authorities, though assistant city attorney Azlina Goldstein-Siegel said the city had offered to a tax exemption other potential buyers that were not nonprofits. Referring to the city’s loss of the property from its tax roll, Oravec said, “In a vacuum I probably would have gone against this item, but we are not in a vacuum.” Oravec, however, challenged church officials to come up with a way to offset the city’s loss of taxes as they develop an economic impact statement to be presented before the council’s final vote on the sale. During his presentation to the city council, Christ Fellowship spokesman Donald Hearing said The church would pay about $133,000 a year in city stormwater and Tradition assessments. Hearing said the site is ideal for the church because of its proximity to high-capacity roads in the area. Taking a vacation? A Seasonal Resident? Let us watch your home.

Mother’s Day
The custom of honoring mothers goes back at least as far as 17th century England, which celebrated (and still celebrates) Mothering Sunday. Mother’s Day in the United States originated in 1872. Your arms were open when I needed a hug. Your heart understood when I needed a friend. Your gentle eyes were stern when I needed a lesson. Your strength and love has guided me and gave me wings to fly. Give your Mother a special gift of Love. Let me design a one of a kind custom made Mother’s ring so you can thank her.

JOBS from page A19 nomic troubles and slow recovery are largely the crux of them. Many manufacturing workers moved to new kinds of work, some moved away and because manufacturers didn’t have orders to fill, younger workers weren’t being hired to get the training to replace older ones. About a year and a half ago, Indian River State College started a program to help local manufacturers get skilled workers: the Fast Track to Manufacturing Training Program. Joe Gorham, program manager at IRSC, said Fast Track teaches basics such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration
guidelines, measurement training, process management, blueprint reading. “The program was developed under a Department of Labor grant that involves 12 colleges across the state of Florida,” he said. Gorham said the instructors aren’t teaching from books. “They are employees at local manufacturers, so they’re teaching what local manufacturers want,” he said. The program tuition is $995. About 70 have gone through the competitive program. CareerSource has funded 43. Almost 400 had applied for it. Gorham said CareerSource funds many of the students. Gorham said there were 11 stu-

dents without current employment in the last graduating class. “Nine out of the 11 were hired within 30 days,” he said. In addition to CareerSource offering financial assistance to students, the Vietnam Veterans and America’s Stuart chapter, 1041, has created 10 scholarships for veterans. The unemployment rate is calculated using a variety of methods. Among them are telephone interviews with workers. Those that are able to work and report not having jobs, but looked for employment in the previous 30 days, are counted as unemployed. Discouraged workers — those who are able to work and want jobs, but have not sought employment in the previ-
ous 30 days — are not counted in the unemployment figure. Many call this “shadow unemployment,” and it’s inherently difficult to track due to variations for why people don’t seek jobs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the national labor participation rate — the percentage of those able to work, or seek jobs, that do, edged downward over the year from 63.2 percent seasonally adjusted to 62.7 percent. Participation rates are affected by a variety of factors that can be seen as positives and negatives. Florida and the Treasure Coast have had an increasing number of workers and lowering unemployment. More about Fast Track is at www. irsc.edu/manufacturing.
Peripheral Neuropathy WARNING The treatment to increase blood flow utilizes a specialized low level light therapy (not to be confused with laser therapy) using light emitting diode technology. This technology was originally developed by NASA to assist in increasing blood flow.
Port St. Lucie, FL — The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Neurontin, and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects. Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. As you can see in Figure 2, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning and many additional symptoms.
The low level light therapy is like watering a plant. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a plant and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper.
Figure 2: When these very small blood vessels become diseased they begin to shrivel up and the nerves begin to degenerate. three factors must be determined. 1) What is the underlying cause? 2) How Much Nerve Damage Has Been Sustained. NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is likely nothing that we can do for you. 3) How much treatment will your condition require?
The treatment that is provided at our clinic has three main goals: 1) Increase blood flow 2) Stimulate small fiber nerves 3) Decrease brain-based pain
The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage there is hope! Dr. John Silva, D.C. at the Neuropathy Relief Center will conduct a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy. Call 772-429-8800 to make an appointment with Dr. Silva to determine if your peripheral neuropathy can be treated. This comprehensive evaluation is limited to the first 12 callers who reserve an appointment.
Dr. John Silva, D.C.
Figure 1: Notice the very small blood vessels surrounding each nerve.
The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here in Port St. Lucie that offers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (see the special neuropathy severity examination at the end of this article) In order to effectively treat your neuropathy,

their own eyes and stubbornly holding to their viewpoint, regardless of evidence to the contrary. I can understand that, but more often than not, lies can be deliberate acts of deception designed to mislead. The truth is, lies and deception are perhaps most evident when it comes to politics and government. Rarely do politicians address anything directly or truthfully. When they are faced with a truth that opposes their ideology, they simply cast it aside, and to my dismay, people will accept it. Then they forget it. Have we forgotten about George Washington and the cherry tree? When it comes to politics I am of a believer of what I call “The Rule of Threes.” To put it in its most simple form, most people have the capacity to deal with only three issues at a time. Most people will forgive three indiscretions or violations. Then it will only hold their interest for three months. After that, it becomes unimportant and forgotten. Whenever another conflict or social impropriety is exposed, it replaces one of the forgotten three issues. Time has a way of forgiving and forgetting. After all, what difference does it make now … let bygones be bygones?
We are now bearing witness to a series of devastating events not only in the Ukraine and the Middle East, but in the streets of America. What has happened to the core values on which our founding fathers crafted our constitution, the bedrock of our democracy? Are we to continue to allow our elected officials to lie and deceive us and the excuse that a broken campaign promise is acceptable? The truth is the truth and will last a million years. A lie is a lie and will for sure eventually rot and die. Have we seen our best days and are we to say good bye to old glory? Our flag will forever be tarnished as long as we continue to allow protesters to burn it and stomp on it. We can no longer accept the everyday lies and deceptions from the political landscape and main stream media. Why can’t they simply report the news rather than unfairly promote positions in an obvious disproportionate fashion? Don’t let our politicians’ smooth talking rhetoric fool you into thinking that things will be better. We simply want to hear the truth. Then perhaps we may stand a chance to build a better future for our children and grandchildren. Lately I have just about giv-

Summer program has strong ballet program STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The St. Lucie Ballet has been educating Treasure Coast dance students since 2004. Co-director Lydia Oquendo Corrales and her husband, Rogelio Corrales, are professional dancers and understand the training and discipline necessary to become proficient in ballet and other dance forms. During the summer, the Ballet will present Summer Intensive 2015. There are classes for toddlers, children, teens, pre-professionals and adults and students can take courses in ballet, jazz and contemporary dance. Oquendo emphasized the importance the summer session, “Dancer levels Ballet 1 and up receive pre-professional training at this very intensive and focused program,” she said. “After every summer program, students come away with stronger technique and more knowledge. They are more fit and (have) more stamina than ever. There
is a drastic and noticeable difference in their level once all three summer sessions have been completed. “Students feel very accomplished after having learned many classical variations such as the Swanilda variation from ‘Sleeping Beauty.” These and other dances are performed in costume at our Mini-Shows, presented at our studios for family and friends. The Summer Intensive runs for three sessions, June 15-26, July 13-24 and July 27-Aug. 7. Students at levels Ballet 1 and up take classes from 9 a.m., - 3 p.m. with a performance on the last Friday of the session. Pre-ballet classes are held in the evenings. Other special features involve a Choreography Workshop from June 15-26. The two-week workshop will allow dancers to choreograph their own work and perform it in costume at the end of the session. Ballet 1 and 2 includes Technique from 9-10:30 a.m., followed by a break. From 11 a.m.-noon, students will study

IRSC from page B3 Dr. Sarah Mallonee, professor, English, Communications, and Modern Languages Department and Dr. Tom D’Elia, associate professor, Biology Department with the Banack Family Partnership Endowed Teaching Chair in agriculture. “Because quality of instruction is fundamental to IRSC’s mission, we feel that it is very important to recognize these outstanding faculty members and reward them with the resources to implement projects that will benefit students and the community and further contribute toward the excellence of the College,” said Dr. Edwin R. Massey, IRSC president. Massey and more than 30 IRSC administrators, faculty, and students surprised the recipients with balloons, flowers, and a miniature wooden “chair” for the surprise presentation. The recipients will be rewarded with an annual stipend of $6,000 a year for three consecutive years; $4,000 to implement their initiatives and improve instruction in their field of expertise and $2,000 in recognition of excellence in teaching. The Endowed Teaching Chair program is made possible by contributions to the IRSC Foundation. Wendy Dwyer, a St. Lucie Coun-
ty resident, will focus on exposing students to a variety of communication styles, opportunities to enhance written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills, with practical application for the 21st century. Dwyer joined IRSC in 2009 and holds a bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College and a master’s degree from Concordia University. Dr. Jonathan Glover will establish Project Public Spheres: Academic Service Learning Across the Curriculum, an interdisciplinary teaching institute and online scholarly journal dedicated to instructional invocation through Academic Service Learning. An Indian River county resident, Glover joined IRSC in 2011. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Florida Gulf Coast University, a master’s degree from the University of Central Florida, and his Ph.D. in English from the University of Florida. Dr. Sarah Mallonee will create a Virtual Honors program which will support the increased demand for the honors experience at IRSC through online offerings. A St. Lucie County resident, Mallonee joined IRSC in 2007. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Tulane University, and a master’s and Ph.D. in English degrees from the University of Florida.
