TREASURE COAST — The Army Corps of Engineers has pulled the plug on the lagoon’s life support. That’s what a resounding number of Treasure Coast residents say the Corps did when they refused to sign off on the Central Everglades Planning Project last week, making it impossible for projects inside to receive funding from Congress. “Without the river, we’re burying a way of life,” said Nyla Pipes, one of the founding members of One Florida Foundation, a nonprofit group dedicated to advocating for clean water in the state. Pipes vowed river warriors will forge on with the fight, despite the stunning upset. The Port St. Lucie resident was among thousands of other locals who staged mass protests last summer, demanding Lake Okeechobee discharges stop. “That’s the thing with this group and this community,” said Pipes,

who pleaded her case in front of members of Congress last year. “We’ve reached a level where we won’t put up with this. We have to fix this.” The goal of the Central Everglades Planning Project, most commonly referred to as CEPP, is to deliver a final plan, known as a Project Implementation Report, for a suite of restoration projects in the central Everglades and Indian River Lagoon to prepare for congressional authorization. CEPP identifies and plans for Army Corps projects on land to send more water south to the central Everglades. The Army Corps Civil Works Review Board in Washington, D.C., put the brakes on the project last Wednesday, citing a slight difference in terminology in a small portion of the report and the South Florida Water Management District’s final resolution. TREASURE COAST — The Florida Department of Law Enforcement released its 2013 Uniform Crime Report last week, and the numbers look good for the state, Port St. Lucie and Martin Coun-

ty. However, St. Lucie County edged up almost 10 percent in reported crimes. “You don’t want to live and die by statistics,” Port St. Lucie Chief John Bolduc, said. “It’s just another way of measuring our success and failures.” Nevertheless, the chief has something big to celebrate. Port

St. Lucie took an enviable top spot this year after having the second year with a nearly 20 percent reduction in reported crimes. “It is the lowest crime rate for any city with a population over 100,000 in the state of Florida,” Bolduc said. He added, “We have less crime now than we had in

2002 and the population then was 96,000.” Martin County saw a more modest drop in reported crime. “The overall crime rate reduction is 3.4 percent in this county,” Sheriff William Snyder said. The FDLE reports that Florida

TRADITION — Dr. Moti Ramgopal saw many tropical infectious disease in his native Guyana, but it was his work in the Bahamas that sent him on his course of improving treatment options and finding cures for those diseases. There, he saw many young people dying of HIV/AIDS. “I saw that and it became important to understand,” he said. The new medical director of the Center for Clinical Research at Martin Health System attended medical school in the University of the West Indies, finished his internal medicine residence at Bon Secours Hospital in Detroit and completed his infectious disease fellowship at the University of Miami. In 1999, ready to establish a practice, he looked at a variety of options. “I looked at a map of Miami and Orlando,” he said. “I had been working in Tampa and I wanted to go into infectious diseases. I said, ‘Let me come to St. Lucie County.’ I felt it was where I needed to be. It was the strangest decision I ever made. I believe there’s a reason God brought me

here. “ In 2002, Ramgopal co-founded Midway Immunology and Research Center in Fort Pierce. When he began, he had one HIV patient. Now he treats many people with HIV and infectious diseases who come to see him from other areas. For many, new medications have turned what used to be a fatal illness into a chronic one. In his new position, Ramgopal hopes to structure research with both hospital-based studies and long-term research projects. “Hospital-based studies will deal with the clinical issue of drug-resistant pathogens that cause pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections and infections such as clostridium difficile or C. diff. We will introduce Phase 3 studies that have proven safety and efficacy. We are looking for more long-term data. Will they help more than the gold standard drugs? We will also look into cardiac and gastroenterology issues.” Ramgopal noted that all clinical trials are FDA approved and conducted under strict and rigorous guidelines. “Having in-patient clinical trials enhances progress to the next

LAGOON from page 1 Bush said during a telephone press conference. Bush also addressed frustrations on the Treasure Coast. “It’s not a stalling tactic …,” Bush said. “This has been a very expedited process since November 2011 to today. We’re less than three years into this study and we’re right at the brink of approval right now.” The Corps announced it would have an updated report no later than the end of June, after Congress recesses for the summer. A new and improved water bill is expected to hit the U.S. House floor before then — too little, and much too late for lagoon project funding. It’s been almost a decade since Congress updated its current water bill. U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Jupiter, released a statement the day after the decision promising to “hold the Corps’ feet to the fire.” “The Corps must be held accountable to meet their deadlines and I will do everything I can to urge the Army Corps to address the review boards’ concerns and to approve CEPP as quickly as possible,” Murphy said. “I will be inviting the bureaucrats making this decision to our district to see first-hand the harm these discharges cause to our waterways so they understand the importance of this project and that our community is going to be holding their feet to the fire to get this done.” Gov. Rick Scott, who’s been criticized by lagoon advocates for a lack of support, also issued a statement calling for action. “We are extremely disappointed that Corps officials in Washington refused to approve CEPP at yesterday’s meeting. Day-by-day the rainy season approaches, and that’s why we are asking the Board to immediately recon-

Governor’s request for the Corp’s Civil Works Review Board to immediately reconvene to discuss and approve CEPP,” the release stated. Martin County resident Megan Remick is planning a funeral for the lagoon. “Our river may be dying, but until the people of this community are dead, we will not stop fighting,” Remick said. The service will take place at the St. Lucie Lock and Dam in Stuart on May 3. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. Suggested arrival time is 9 a.m., Remick said.

Car burglar at large in SLW Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

nrodriguez@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE WEST — City police need help identifying a car burglar who used a stolen credit card at the Walmart in St. Lucie West. The credit card was stolen from a car parked in the driveway of a home on Cameo Boulevard the evening of April 9. The man police are seeking tried to use three debit and credit cards, stolen from the car, at the Walmart for a $212.95 purchase for electronics. Walmart footage shows the suspect is a black male approximately 20-30 years old, 5 feet, 10 inches tall with a heavy-set build. He was wearing a white tank top, dark pants and white metallic earphones over a dark-colored cap. After all three cards were declined, the suspect left through the garden entrance, a police report states. Three debit and credit cards, designer sneakers valued at $500 and $4 in paper currency were stolen from the car, according to the report. The same suspect also tried to strike a car parked at a home one street over from Cameo Boulevard on Monterrey Lane on April 10, police said. Home surveillance video showed the attempted break-in after the car’s owner noticed an abandoned bicycle on the ground near the vehicle.

Photo courtesy of the Port St. Lucie Police Department Police are looking for this man, who was caught on a St. Lucie West Walmart surveillance camera, trying to use three stolen credit cards on April 10. The suspect stole the credit cards from a car parked in the driveway of a Port St. Lucie home. Police believe the bicycle, a red Next La Jolla Street Cruiser, was also stolen. Finger prints from the bicycle have been sent off for processing, Port St. Lucie Police spokesman Master Sgt. Frank Sabol said. Sabol said it’s possible the suspect could live in the area or was visiting a friend or family member.

In order to avoid falling victim to a car break-in while at home, Sabol recommends following a few simple steps. “Make sure that any valuables are removed from your car,” Sabol said. “It’s good to put up motion sensor lights and make sure your cars are locked.”

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Florida Highway Patrol recently released its final traffic homicide report on the single-car crash that claimed the life of Lincoln Park Academy student Christian Medina. In the report, FHP investigators conclude Medina caused the crash on Orange Avenue last October. “It was determined that the cause of the crash was due to careless driving on the part of D-1,” the 13-page report states. The report referred to Medina, 16, as “D-1. Medina, who was on his way to school with twin brothers Peter and Timothy Green, both 15 at the time, was behind the wheel of his silver Pontiac Sunfire, and possibly racing another student to school on Orange Avenue the morning of Oct. 23. The other student was driving a silver Toyota 4 Runner and will not be charged in connection with the

crash, the report states. “As they were eastbound, on several occasions, D-1 would speed up then slow down,” the report states. Both cars came to a stop at the intersection of Orange Avenue and Hartman Road just before the crash. Speed limit signs on the road indicated the maximum speed allowed is 45 MPH. “Once both vehicles cleared the intersection, D-1 accelerated to a speed faster than the posted speed limit,” the report states. According to the report, Medina tailed the Toyota, both weaving lanes. “D-1 attempted to overtake (the Toyota) in the inside lane; however, as he attempted to do this, D-1 overcorrected and lost control of V01,” the report states. Medina’s car was referred to as “V01” in the report. Timothy Green, who was seated in the right rear passengers’ seat, removed his seatbelt before the crash and was thrown from the vehicle, the report states. His

Get to know mayoral candidate Chauncelor Howell Your Voice News & Views sent out questionnaires to all local political candidates in the 2014 races. Port St. Lucie mayoral candidate Chauncelor Howell is a Miami native, married father of one with one grandchild, who has lived in Port St. Lucie since 2006. The 20year Marine Corps veteran has work experience as a region human resources representative for FedEx Ground, a human resources manager with Eckerd Youth Alternatives and served as chief operating officer for Evergreen BioConcepts. Howell is currently on sabbatical from a Doctorate of Management program with Colorado Technical Institute, an online quasi-residential platform.

relationship with St. Lucie County? What changes can be made to foster a better relationship? A: As a resident of this county I am unaware of any friction that may exist between city and county elected officials. At any rate, if I am fortunate enough to become the next mayor of Port St Lucie, I will ensure that the interest and welfare of the constituents of Port St. Lucie remain at the forefront of all decisions I am compelled to make. Additionally, I am of the opinion that it is paramount for both Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce to foster open-communication and dialogue amongst the councils that will create win-win scenarios as Chauncelor Howell

A: The act of balancing the budget is an on-going evolution as it relates to addressing fiscal challenges of any municipality. Without infringing on any parameters of the Sunshine Law, in my opinion it would be extremely necessary pay attention to the recommendations that come from the city manager and directors of the Office of Management and Budgeting and Finance departments presents as it relates to the data of the previous fiscal year. Attention-to-Detail is of the essence at this juncture of governing and the best course of action is to have this explained in laymen’s terms so that the constituents will have a clear understanding how their tax dollars are being spent. Get to know mayoral candidate James Rich Your Voice News & Views sent out questionnaires to all local political candidates in the 2014 races. We are publishing their answers as they were returned to us, with minor editing. All submissions will be published in the weeks between now and Election Day. Port St. Lucie mayoral candidate James Rich is a married father of one, who has lived in Port St. Lucie for 28 years. His wife, Paula, works at Indian River State College. Rich has worked in the direct mail marketing industry for 25 years and specializes in data processing and document production and worked with banks, hospitals, governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations and private businesses.

James Rich

Q: Discuss your interest in serving as mayor on the City Council. Discuss your prior experience working with civic, community or governmental organizations. A: I have served as a volunteer vice president for my local Little League at Sportsman’s Park for three years. I’ve coached and managed various baseball teams for many years and still umpire baseball games at various levels. I’ve also assisted in raising money for C.A.S.T.L.E. and volunteered at our Botanical Gardens. I reinforced my lifelong passion for politics after being appointed and serving on the city of Port St. Lucie’s Planning and Zoning Board as an unpaid volunteer. Being appointed and serving for eight years (two terms), provided me with the experience of running public meetings, handling the press, discussing, debating and voting on issues related to land use, zoning codes, variances and managing situations very similar to city council issues. Since the mayor serves on the St. Lucie County Fire District Board, I attended and completed the citizen’s fire academy in 2013. This experience gave me the insight necessary to serve as a representative on the fire board. Q: What do you perceive as the three most important concerns facing the city of Port St. Lucie? A: The most important concern for Port St. Lucie is to restore honor, integrity and respect to the office of mayor. The citizens deserve a mayoral candidate unencumbered

with past employment issues with the city. Second, we must begin seriously marketing our city in conjunction with the St. Lucie County Economic Development Council and Enterprise Florida. We should not have waited months to put together a plan to market the Digital Domain building. Companies are leaving California, Colorado and New York for Texas and South Carolina. Because Florida is a business-friendly state, Port St. Lucie should be a serious consideration. Lastly, in October of 2013, Fitch Ratings moved the city from a stable to a negative rating for our general obligation bonds. Moody’s Investor Service indicates that our current outlook is stable. Bottom line, we must reduce our debt. Q: What are your thoughts related to the city of Port St. Lucie’s relationship with St. Lucie County? What changes can be made to foster a better relationship? A: Port St. Lucie must work ag-

CRIME from page 1 had the lowest crime rate in 43 years in 2013. Between 2012 and 2013, the state had a 4.7 percent reduction in reported crimes. The FDLE has tracked crime rates since 1971. Statewide, reported crimes dropped from almost 726,000 to about 699,000. St. Lucie County saw a 9.1 percent increase in reported crime from 2012 to 2013. Garry Wilson, chief deputy, said the majority of the increase was crimes of opportunity. “In most cases, it’s juveniles going through the neighborhoods and looking into cars,” he said. Wilson said that when opportunity criminals like these spot desirable items, they’ll check to see if the car doors are unlocked. “Some of those instances could be avoided if people would lock their valuables,” he said. Wilson added, “The only positive side of that is, it’s one or two or maybe three neighborhood kids sneaking out at night. Invariably, a parent will go into a room and (find stolen items) and say, ‘Where did this stuff come from?’ Then the story comes out.” However, St. Lucie did have a more nefarious crime increase: from no murders in 2012 to seven in 2013. One killing, Wilson said, was a domestic shooting. Another an unfortunate death following a fistfight. But— “Of the seven we had, five were most likely gang related,” Wilson said. The county saw significant drops in forcible sexual offences, from 55 in ‘12 to 34 in ’13, and robberies, from 31 to 20. However, it saw a 35.4 percent increase in aggravated assaults and batteries, from 175 reported in 2012 to 237 in 2013. Wilson attributed some of that to educational programs making victims more willing to report crimes. Additionally, St. Lucie had increases in burglaries, thefts and auto thefts. Bolduc said that criminals don’t regard boarders and apparent crime spikes, or drops, in one

jurisdiction are partly a matter of luck. “We have quite a bit of flow between Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie,” Bolduc said. The three lawmen said there are effective strategies departments use to combat crime. Bolduc attributed Port St. Lucie’s large drop in reported crimes to a couple factors. One is “institutional systemic response to crime.” “We have a very systematic response to (crime),” Bolduc said. “Analysis is the first stage.” Bolduc said Port St. Lucie police have worked for about eight years with Rachel Santos, associate professor at the school or criminology and criminal justice at Florida Atlantic University. He said the professor has helped the department form crime tracking and response methods that seem to be working. “We follow a model we’ve developed,” Bolduc said. Back in Martin, Sheriff Snyder, who started the job in 2013, has emphasized public education about criminal activities and used many forums to urge residents to call about suspected criminal activity. At a recent Palm City Chamber of Commerce town hall meeting, he said a major factor in combating a scourge of pillowcase burglaries was citizens calling in “signal 13s.,” suspicious vehicle reports. Pillowcase burglars frequently rent late-model cars in their home counties, often Broward, and put on temporary tinting to ply their trade in upscale neighborhoods. “We saw an incredible increase (in suspicious vehicle reports),” Snyder told town hall attendees. And a corresponding drop in pillowcase burglaries. “I think we’ve mobilized everybody in a war on crime,” Snyder said in a later telephone interview. “Our digital footprint has helped a lot. We connect (with residents) with Facebook and Twitter.” Breaking feeds on Facebook

RICH from page 10 gressively to foster an improved partnership with not only St. Lucie County, but our neighboring counties as well. If we work together to market our region, I believe we will overcome some of the employment challenges we’ve experienced. If a potential employer is not a good fit for Port St. Lucie, I would still work to find the best possible local site. Ultimately, an employer located within our area would still benefit Port St. Lucie. Q: All cities are facing fiscal challenges. How would you address balancing the budget and consider various alternatives and trade-offs?

Tro

A: Reducing our debt is a huge challenge. Taxable values have fallen by 40 percent between fiscal year 2008 and 2012, however we have experienced a slow, steady increase in taxable value in FY 2013 and the first quarter of 2014. Our general obligation bonds, City Center Special Assessment and our obligation for the Digital Domain building will continue to put a strain on our general fund. These are challenges the city manager has and will continue to work through. The only foreseeable way to address these fiscal issues is to increase the

p

taxable value of property, which generates additional funding for the city and attract a variety of industries to Port St. Lucie. By diversifying and broadening out the workforce, we will be able to sustain our current debt service. Lastly, we must find a suitable buyer for the Digital Domain building. We will not recover the total amount due on the building, but we will reduce our debt obligation.

Q: What areas of Port St. Lucie do you think present an opportunity for redevelopment and revitalization? What do you think would be an appropriate approach for the city? A: The city of Port St. Lucie’s current Community Redevelopment Plan and the CRA Expansion Master Plan are sufficient at this time. These plans are long-term approaches to redevelopment specific areas for the next 20 to 30 years. We have yet to realize the full potential. Q: What do you think would make Port St. Lucie a better place to live? A: In my opinion, expanding and diversifying the local workforce will reduce the number of residents leaving our city for employ-

HOWELL from page 9 do you think present an opportunity for redevelopment and revitalization? What do you think would be an appropriate approach for the city? A: Not long ago the city of Port St Lucie was one of the fastest growing cities in the country. However, when the market crashed it forced some residents to abandon the homes that they purchased during the boom. As results of this, it created depressed neighborhoods that once were categorized as being nice. Therefore a conversation cannot be had regarding redevelopment or revitalization without discussing a way to renovate and sell the many vacated homes that are amongst us. Revitalization can be viewed from a number of standpoints regarding the City of Port St Lucie. The two places that immediately come to mind are the Civic Center on the East side of town and the Foreign Trade Zone (218) on the West side. These are two scenarios that have a direct impact on the lack of industry that exists within the city. Yes Digital Domain is the low hanging fruit, by virtue of its location and proximity to I-95; nonetheless, we have unoccupied office spaces and warehouses that comprise of the FTZ that are underutilized. If we are going to have a serious discussion about redevelopment and revitalization the Foreign Trade Zone (218) must be a part of the equation. Q: What do you think would make Port St. Lucie a better place to live? A: During the past eight years I have witnessed the buzz that Port St. Lucie has during season, when the Mets and people from the Northern states join us to enjoy the wonderful weather here in the Sunshine State. At any rate, a week after they are gone, it is common to walk into a local restaurant and find more staff than you do fellow patrons. This is something that needs to change and speaks to directly to quality of life for those of us who live here on a permanent basis. When spring training has come and gone in the city of West Palm Beach, what two events are they preparing to host that adds further buzz to the city? Sun Fest and the Annual West Palm Beach Marathon! These are two revenue-generating events that allow the city of West Palm Beach, small businesses, and residents to come together annually for clean family fun and entertainment. A little further south in Miami Gardens, people travel from all parts of the country to their annual three day event (Jazz in the Gardens). All of

YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • ST. LUCIE WEST/TRADITION • MAY 2, 2014 • 17 this is happening while the city of Port St. Lucie is sitting idle and the residents who have access to disposable income opt to spend it elsewhere instead of within our own city limits due to the lack of options. Do we have the capacity to host a first class event on the scale of the aforementioned cities? You bet we do! We have a big field in the middle of tradition, an underutilized Civic Center, and a ballpark that fall under the cognizance of the county sitting in the middle of St. Lucie West….. Yes, this is something that is within our grasp. Q: What sets you apart from the other candidates in this race? A: With much respect and admiration for everyone that is in the field, I can say without reservation that I believe the culmination of experience, formal education and ability to lead is what sets me a part from the other candidates. Throughout my tour of duty as a United States Marine, I have had an opportunity to work alongside some of the more sound leaders the country has to offer. Simply put, I learned from the best! By virtue of the City’s Charter amended in 1961, it calls for a strong city manager – weak mayor concept. This is no-pun against the incumbent or any of her predecessors. Through collaboration, it compels the mayor to be a visionary, a person who charts the course for the masses, and ensures that the business of the people remains at the forefront of the agenda at all times. This is what I bring to the table that I believe would make me the candidate of choice. Q: What are three achievable goals that you would champion during your term in office? A: (1) Identify a legitimate enterprise to occupy the vacant Digital Domain building in Tradition. I have researched several companies that might be a good fit for this location. In quest of garnering support and buy-in from the masses, I will reveal them as we get deeper into the political process and campaign season. (2) In light of the recent loss of Dayanna Gil, use the mayoral platform to lobby for more federal dollars to build sidewalks at a faster pace than the current. During a personal visit to Lucero Road, for at least a half a mile on the road in which the accident occurred the traffic is uncontrolled. This is totally unacceptable and is destined to happen again if not properly addressed. (3) Ensure the constituents who

A: The biggest difference between me the other candidates is that I was appointed and served on the city of Port St. Lucie’s Planning and and Zoning Board for two terms (2003-2011). As an unpaid volunteer for eight years, I was part of a board that provided city council with recommendations on land use and zoning changes, variances and a variety of building related issues. During my service, I had the honor of running public meetings as chairman for two years, developed professional relationships with city department personnel, residents and applicants. Having never been an employee of the city, I would provide unbiased and independent leadership. Q: What are three achievable goals that you would champion during your term in office? A: I will restore honor, integrity and respect to the office of mayor. That one goal will go a long way to repairing the city’s reputation. I will also aggressively help market the city as mayor, in partnership with the St. Lucie County Economic Development Council, Enterprise Florida and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. By capitalizing on our successful research facilities in Tradition, I am confident we can attract similar organizations that will mutually benefit each another. The third goal would be to assist in fostering a more business friendly environment for our small busi-

ness owners, the lifeblood of our community. Q: What is the most pressing issue for the residents in St. Lucie West and Tradition? A: The issues in Tradition and St. Lucie West are the same for all of our residents, which are to maintain a high quality of life. Q: How should the city handle the vacant Digital Domain building? A: I addressed this issue in a previous question, but we must quickly find a suitable buyer for the Digital Domain building. We should have had a marketing plan in place months ago. An RFP for “Real Estate Broker Services for Tradition Studios” was posted on 4-5-2014. We will not recover the total amount due on the building, but we will reduce our debt obligation.

Q: How can the city help save the Indian River Lagoon? A: Lake Okeechobee water discharge volume, frequency and location of discharge are decisions made by the South Florida Water Management District on behalf of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Water is discharged into the Caloosahatchee Estuary on the West Coast, Water Conservation Areas, the Lake Worth Lagoon and the St. Lucie Estuary; locally known as the Indian River Lagoon. Unfortunately, none of the affected municipalities can alter these decisions. In March 2014, Port St. Lucie passed stricter fertilizer regulations, which will help the overall health of the lagoon, by reducing fertilizer runoff. The Central Everglades Planning Project, which I support, will provide the necessary infrastructure to move, clean and provide water to the Everglades National Park. This will greatly reduce polluted water discharge that damages sensitive aquatic areas on both sides of the state.

Q: What is the most pressing issue for the residents in St. Lucie West and Tradition? A: For some who reside in various gated communities in St. Lucie West, they would rather secede from the rest of the city. For the record, I do not subscribe to that school of thought. And those who reside in Tradition are constantly reminded on a daily basis the need for something positive to happen with Digital Domain. Of all of the neighborhoods within the city limits, Tradition sports the likes of the Research Park, Tradition Medical Center and Southern Groove. Q: How should the city handle the vacant Digital Domain building? A: I am aware that the City Council has augmented the services of

CRIME from page 13 and Twitter have helped catch criminals. For example, citizens helped the Martin County Sheriff’s Office nab a pair of criminals burglarizing houses in Tropical Farms on April 7. A suspicious-vehicle report triggered a hunt for the suspects that culminated in a lockdown of Crystal Lake Elementary school. After a dramatic chase, deputies arrested Cordy Leprell Walton, Riviera Beach, and Courtney Desmond Zieler, West Palm Beach. Among other offenses, they were charged with counts of aggravated battery on law-enforcement officers. During

the Economic Development Council to advise and assist with locating a good fit for the Digital Domain building. However, that should not subdue the efforts of the city manager, council and constituents in a collaborative effort to arrive at a plausible outcome. There should be a special taskforce that mirror a public-private partnership form of collaboration. In my opinion, anything short of that is a recipe for disaster. Q: How can the city help save the Indian River Lagoon? A: Unfortunately, this is an issue that is currently being deliberated at levels of government above City Hall. With that said, we should all be responsible stewards of the planet which consist of protecting our waterways at all costs. I believe that the council has taken some steps in the right direction to implement ordinances that speak directly to the toxicity of fertilizer. These are small steps that definitely play a major role in protecting our multiple bodies of water that connect to the Indian River Lagoon.

a chase, the suspects rammed deputies’ cruisers. Bolduc, too, said that the Port St. Lucie Police Department has reached out to report suspicious activities. “Crime prevention is a lot more than putting people in jail,” he said. “Crime prevention is creating an environment where the community is engaged with the police department and the police department and city hall is engaged in the community.” However, Budock said that his and other area departments have done well in finding and arresting suspects in crimes. “We have noticed that as the arrests go up, the crime goes down,” he said.

DOCTOR from page 3 level,” he said. “We can get drugs to the patient earlier, before FDA approval.” For the longer-term research, Ramgopal is thinking in terms of projects for the next five to 10 years. The focus of much of the work is on understanding how the immune system works. Why are some patients able to resist disease when others become ill? What causes the immune system to break down? For those questions, researchers will be collaborating with scientists at the nearby Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute. The goal is treatment that targets disease but not healthy tissue and organs.

“The next phase is immunotherapy,” he said. “How can we improve the immune system and what part of the immune system is failing? How can we develop targeted treatments?” In addition to his position with the Martin Health Clinical Research Center, Ramgopal serves as the country medical director of Guyana-Pepfar, working closely with the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the Institute of Human Virology. He is also assistance clinical professor in medicine for Florida State University. Even with those other responsibilities, he said that his new job is exciting.

Is the IRS sending you notices saying you owe them money or you’ve made an error? We can help! A new client received a proposed change to their 2011 Individual Income Tax return stating that they owed the IRS $20,378 in tax, penalty and interest. After retaining us, we found that the client had prepared their own tax return incorrectly. We sent a letter to the IRS with an explanation of the corrections. This resolved the matter resulting in the client owing the IRS nothing! Another new client received a proposed change to their 2011 Individual Income Tax stating they owed the IRS $10,078 in tax, penalty and interest. In this case the client had received a corrected notice of earnings from the Social Security Administration. The IRS was trying to tax the client for the original notice and the corrected notice. After retaining us, we identified the error resulting in the client owing nothing! A third new client received a notice from the IRS regarding the $166,000 in tax, penalty and interest which he legitimately owed on his 2008 Individual Income Tax. This resulted in the IRS placing a levy on the clients bank accounts. After retaining us, we were able to have the levy released and put his account in a “currently uncollectable” status so he was no longer receiving the harassing collection letters from the IRS.

Tradition resident accepted for West Point Summer Leaders seminar Rebecca Sleight, a junior at Lincoln Park Academy in Fort Pierce and lives in Tradition, has been selected to be among 1,000 attendees at West Point’s prestigious Summer Leaders Experience in June. More than 5,000 juniors nationwide applied to Summer Leaders Experience, which offers outstanding high school juniors the opportunity to experience life at West Point. Summer Leaders Experience attendees live in the cadet barracks (dormitories), eat in the Cadet Mess, and participate in academic, leadership, athletic, and military workshops. The one week seminars are designed to help juniors with their college-selection process, while giving them an idea of the importance of leadership and sound decision-making in their education, careers, and lives, in general. All attendees participate in virtual-reality war simulation, and military and physical fitness training, and, in addition, each student selects three of the 15 of-

fered workshops. The United States Military Academy at West Point is a fouryear, co-educational, federally funded undergraduate college located 50 Rebecca Sleight miles north of New York City. A pre-eminent leader development institution, West Point was founded in 1802 as America’s first college of engineering. Since then, West Point has grown in size and stature, but remains committed to the task of producing commissioned leaders of character for America’s Army.

ST. LUCIE WEST — There’s murder most fowl when the award-winning culinary and drama departments at St. Lucie West Centennial High School team up on May 16 to present an interactive murder mystery dinner theater production, “Café Murder,” by Nathan Hartswick. The menu includes a mixed

green salad bar, fresh baked rosemary rolls, chicken francaise with roasted rosemary potatoes and candied carrots and chocolate cake with strawberry coulis for dessert. If rosemary seems prominent in the menu, that’s with malice aforethought. Rosemary is the name of the main character and she’s not very nice. Samantha LaCroix heads the drama department at St. Lucie West Centennial and she said that the drama begins as the

guests arrive for dinner. “Dinner is at 6,” she said. “Guests will be greeted by the creepy waitstaff of Café Murder. They’ll be dressed like waiters, but their hair and makeup is not what you’d expect from a waiter. The table settings will be typical and not-so-typical. “Once they come in, they’ll be escorted to the tables. It’s a buffet, but the culinary students give them the food. Half way through dinner, Rosemary and her entourage arrive for her birthday din-

When everyone goes to the rest rooms, the lights flicker, someone screams, and they come out without Rosemary.” Amidst the confusion, a detective who happens to be in the area walks in. It turns out he also knows Rosemary and hates her. Everyone accuses everyone else. “Since the players all have a

ll throughout the months of April and May, Tuesday evenings in historic Downtown Fort Pierce are even more fun and filled with music. That’s because every Tuesday in April and May, we invite students who are vying for one of the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society scholarships to join with our professional musicians on stage at the Sunrise Black Box Theatre. Whether they’re trumpeters, trombonists, drummers, bass players, or vocalists, these talented young musicians have an opportunity to play with the pros, hone their skills, try their talents in front of a live (and very supportive) audience, and show us their stuff. It’s live music the likes of which you’ve never heard and it’s an incredible opportunity for the students. And while we all know that April’s showers bring May flowers, in Florida — at least on the Treasure Coast, they also bring something just as blooming wonderful — scholarships for a whole bunch of deserving students. Tuesday, May 27 is the big night all of us

Don Bestor from Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society wait for all year long. It’s our Christmas, Easter, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa all wrapped up in one supremely special evening, and we wouldn’t miss it for the world. We hope you’ll feel the same way and join us during all of the “auditions” each Tuesday leading up to the Scholarship Award Presentation Evening on Tuesday, May 27, at 7 p.m. at the Sunrise Black Box Theatre. As part of our mission, each year the Jazz Society awards merit

scholarships to worthy area high school graduate musicians who have displayed high academic achievement, good citizenship, and promising musicianship. In addition to a whopping $1,000 scholarship to help defray the costs of continuing education, the Jazz Society also bestows the gift of a year’s membership to the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society on each scholarship award recipient. Every year, our scholarship winners prove to us what tremendous individuals they are, and without fail, each of them comes back to share his or her talents with the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society during school breaks if they’re attending school outside of the area, or throughout the semester if they’re attending college locally. Students perform in our jams, share their talents through educational opportunities, attend master classes, mentor younger musicians, and donate their time and talents to the community in the same way as the professional musicians and contributing members of the Society who modeled that same spirit of community and musicianship to them. A Krystal Klean Solution donates house cleaning to women with cancer ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A Krystal Klean Solution is a family-owned, environmentally friendly residential and commercial cleaning company that has teamed up with Cleaning For A Reason, an international nonprofit foundation. The company strives to exceed the expectations of every valued client and is dedicated to helping families have more time to do the things they enjoy. “I personally have lost my father and grandfather to cancer and know the overwhelming difficulty of going through these circumstances. It is a true honor to work with Cleaning For A Reason and to have the ability to give back to my community. It is an amazing feeling to take the burden of cleaning off their shoulders so that these ladies can focus on what is most important — rest, healing and recovery!” owner Kristi Hetrick said.

The company has agreed to help women battling cancer by cleaning three homes per month for four consecutive months at no charge. The only requirement is that the homes be within the company’s existing service area of the Treasure Coast. For more information about this company, go to www. akrystalkleansolution.com. Cleaning For A Reason strives to aid women who are battling cancer by teaming up with cleaning services across the United States and Canada. Together, these two forces offer free maid services to meet the needs of women, and since 2006, have donated more than $4.2 million in free services. Based in Lewisville, Texas, Cleaning For A Reason works with more than 1,000 residential cleaning services and continues to grow and gain support.
