ST. LUCIE WEST — Port St. Lucie Police have arrested the man they say robbed a St. Lucie West Mobil gas station clerk at gun point last week. Fort Pierce resident James Earl Chambers, 23, was arrested last on May 30 for the armed robbery he allegedly committed while wearing a long, James Earl Chambers dark curly wig with his face masked in sunglasses and cloaked in a white cloth. Surveillance video obtained from Mobil, located at 1343 N.W. St. Lucie West Blvd., shows the suspect enter the gas station on May 24 at 11:10 p.m.

TRADITION — Last year, Pastor Maryanne Kehlenbach was charged with the mission of starting a church in Tradition from the ground up. Under the auspices of Immanuel Lutheran

Church of Palm City, Kehlenbach started Living Faith Church. The pastor, who was a successful banker before turning to the ministry, has been working hard to build a congregation. While the church owns property at the corner of Southwest Community Boulevard and Southwest Rowley Way, they do not yet have a building. Small groups have

“QUITE SIMPLY....I TRUST JOE!!” Local artist Jerry Vilardi is a proud client of Joseph Mutter at Mutter’s Hearing Center in SLW. Jerry has been an accomplished artist for well over 20 years. He has seen and heard a lot over these years. Then, a few years ago Jerry started noticing that his hearing was not as sharp as once was. He even noticed that he couldn’t hear the sound of the paint as it was slapped onto the canvas. He like a lot of folks saw all of the huge newspaper ads and started asking around about hearing aids. Several of his friends and colleagues recommended Joe Mutter. Jerry made an appointment and went in. After a full clinical evaluation, Jerry was convinced that this was the best move for him and bought hearing aids. From that day and time Jerry now mingles and socializes with his friends in the art community and his neighborhood.

Dear Neighbors,

“Joe is very talented with his craft of fitting hearing aids and puts the love, effort and time in with me to ensure my hearing is at its peak; much like the time I spend working on my paintings. I guess if I thought about it Joe brings the sounds of life alive much like I do with my brush when I paint.” Quite simply put, I TRUST JOE!!!!

CHURCH from page 1 building in which to worship. That task just got easier. On May 18, Edwin Williams, president of Immanuel Lutheran Church, presented Pastor Maryanne, as she is known, with a check for $12,000, on behalf of the members of Immanuel Lutheran. The gift will be used to begin regular Sunday worship series in Tradition Town Hall, beginning in August. In a statement, Marilyn Nordine, communications chair of Immanuel Lutheran, said that the gift was an affirmation of the progress that has been made. “The churches join in celebrating this milestone in the Tradition church’s development and in establishing Living Faith Church as an integral part of the Tradition community,” she said. In a written response, Kehlenbach said that the members of her church were grateful for the gift. “The donated monies will help support weekly worship, which will begin Sunday, Aug. 17 at 10 a.m. at Tradition Town Hall. Immanuel Lutheran Church has been and continues to be an incredible blessing to our congregation. Living Faith is launching weekly worship where all are invited to come together to sing praises to our Lord, hear God’s

A: I want to continue to move the city forward; during the recession, we maintained services and kept taxes down. Now we have a chance to improve our infrastructure and quality of life for our citizens without raising tax rates. I currently represent the citizens of Port St. Lucie on the City Council and on various boards and agencies (St. Lucie County Sustainability, Alternate Representative to the Transportation Planning Organization and Treasure Coast League of Cities). I am a member of the Lion’s Club, Council on Aging, Crime Stoppers, Exchange Club, Concerned Citizens, SafeSpace, STARS, St. Lucie County Tourist Development Council, St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Council of St. Lucie County, the St. Lucie County Harbor Advisory Board, Port St. Lucie Historical Society, Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens.

A: Economic development is key to spurring all economic sectors; especially employment. With 15 percent of my district in poverty and 15 percent unemployed, this is my No. 1 issue. No property tax increase. Plan to deliver high levels of services for our current (or lower) tax rate. Infrastructure improvements: sidewalks, road resurfacing, improvement of our city’s older

areas. Q: What are your thoughts related to the city of Port St. Lucie’s relationship with St. Lucie County? What changes can be made to foster a better relationship? A: The relationship between any city and county always has its ups and downs, depending on the issues they face. Most of the time, the county and the city are on the same page, with the same goals – such as with most economic development projects and tourism. Sometimes, however, we have differing agendas; occasionally the situation puts us in opposition as a matter of course. The most important thing, in my mind, is that we keep lines of communication open staff-to-staff and by the conscientious participation of our representatives on joint committees. Q: All cities are facing fiscal challenges. How would you address balancing the budget and consider various alternatives and trade-offs? A: This is a situation that we have faced for almost the entire time I’ve been on the Council.

Fighting as a community for our waterways F

or decades, the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon have been damaged by nutrient heavy freshwater from Lake Okeechobee and local runoff. As your representative, I have been committed to working in Congress with both parties and across all levels of government to push for funding for local environmental projects necessary to improve the health of our local waterways. From constantly advocating for funding for the ongoing C-44 Indian River Lagoon South Project, to persistently calling for the Chief’s Report for the Central Everglades Planning Project, or CEPP, to be finalized, to pushing for a resolution to disputes so that the nearly-completed Kissimmee River Project can be constructed, I have been putting pressure on the Army Corps to keep these critical Everglades restoration projects moving forward. Once completed, all of these projects will benefit the health of our waterways by filtering water before it reaches the St. Lucie, storing more water north of Lake Okeechobee, and ultimately, allowing more water to flow south of the lake. By keeping our foot on the gas on these and other outside the box approaches, such as water farming and filtration projects, we have demonstrated the urgency

I am happy to report that following a letter I sent along with Congressman Tom Rooney, the Corps recently announced that it will be moving forward on the Kissimmee River and the C-111 South Dade projects. These projects play a vital role in helping to store more water north of Lake Okeechobee and connecting key parts of the Everglades restoration system. Rep. Patrick Murphy

of addressing this ongoing crisis in our waterways. Due to this increased awareness, we have made important progress. Earlier this year when President Obama unveiled his budget request for fiscal year 2015, it included a major win for the Treasure Coast — $38 million for the C-44 reservoir project, which is the full

amount that is eligible for award for FY2015. Just as I petitioned the White House to support this funding, I will continue to work in Congress to fight throughout the upcoming appropriations process to protect this funding that will help filter water that flows into the St. Lucie River. Like many residents across the Treasure Coast, however, I was extremely disappointed and frustrated by the Army Corps’ Review Board’s recent decision to delay approval of CEPP, which would move more water south of Lake Okeechobee. Immediately following this announcement, I led a bipartisan Florida delegation letter urging the board to reconvene as quickly as possible in order to move this critical project forward. The Corps heard our cry and assured us that they will reconvene at the end of May so that this project can move into the next step of the approval process. We have to put every effort

forward and take many approaches to address this multi-faceted issue, which is why in addition to these Corps-related efforts, I have also been working on legislative action to create additional water storage areas and to improve estuary maintenance. Preserving and protecting our waterways requires an active and involved community. We should all be proud that, together, we brought national attention to the issue, resulting in the administration prioritizing the health of our Treasure Coast waterways. However, we must also recognize that we have a long fight ahead of us, and it will take many years to undo the damage done over many decades. To that end, I encourage everyone in our community to stay involved by completing an important survey to tell Congress what you think about prioritizing critical funding to keep these projects moving forward, which you can do by visiting tinyurl.com/IRLpetition. As we have seen over the past year, when we work together, much progress can be made. I look forward to continuing to serve as your voice in Congress, fighting together for our precious ecosystem.

D-Day plus 70 years: the battle is still going I started my adult working life as a doughnut baker back in 1985. That’s where I learned about the World War II that didn’t make history books. On June 6, the world commemorates the 70th anniversary of the day that changed modern history, the launch of Operation Overlord. D-Day. But, head back to 1985 with me, please. At 8 p.m. most days, I started my baking shift at the 24-hour Mister Donut, in DeLand. By 4 a.m., I’d see a small host of the regular coffee flies — the insomniacs, the disturbed-dreamers and the lost seekers attracted to the dim florescent glow that promised other wounded souls to talk to. During my decade of working there I met many World War II veterans at 1, 2, and 3 a.m. During the hours when most of our social shields drop, and our mouths say everything they wouldn’t when the sun is in the sky. These weren’t the tidied-up

Patrick McCallister Americana Greatest-Generation types served up with a slice of Mom’s apple pie. These were the World War II veterans who couldn’t, or wouldn’t, hide the psychological scars of that terrible war. These were the World War II veterans who’d go get coffee, disheveled after waking from nightmares. Deadpan eyes staring at the coffee mugs they cuddled in their hands gave away their pain. Fate pulled an interesting twist

in my young life. I spent about the first five or six years working alongside Lisa Ragsdale, a cantankerous woman who grew up in wartime Germany. The veterans and Lisa would talk at great length and detail about wartime Europe. I vicariously experienced years of World War II while making round, fried sweetbreads and $9 an hour. Being an introvert makes me a good listener. Lisa’s village was bombed by B-17s. One time a building she was in collapsed. Lisa vividly described the fear she felt when the American troops were coming. She remembered the terror when they arrived. After getting to know her, I got beneath the crab’s shell to see her palpable hurt and anger. Lisa was angry at the Americans. At first. Shortly after her village was occupied, she wasn’t angry at the American servicemen anymore. Lisa, then a girl of about 10, became angry at the pillars of her perfect German community. The

ministers, the businessmen, the upstanding citizens. The people who’d betrayed the naïve girl by following the momentarily “convenient” wherever it went. One night she told me about Americans officers showing the village evidence of atrocities at a nearby death camp. Her voice took on a growl as she talked about the men she’d respected before. “All those sons of (expletive) said, ‘We didn’t know,’” she told me. “(Expletive). They knew. They didn’t have the balls to stand against it, and they didn’t have the balls to admit to participating.” She said something else, and it didn’t make sense. “That war isn’t finished.” I’ve got 25 more years behind me now to consider her words. Lisa Ragsdale was right. We’re still fighting World War II in many ways. Operation Overlord was far more than the largest air, land and sea

BARTZ from page 4 During that time, we have tightly managed the city budget to ensure that our residents were getting the highest level of service possible for the lowest tax rate possible. Port St. Lucie’s millage rate is 4.4096 versus 4.802 for Stuart and 6.605 for Fort Pierce. We also have one of the lower millage rates for cities of our size; Cape Coral’s is 7.707 and Pembroke Pines’ is 5.6368. Over the years, we’ve restructured city expenses, including a realignment of staff, to keep taxes low while continuing to maintain the city appropriately. Now that the economy is improving, we are well positioned to attract new businesses which bring in new revenue to the city, taking some of the burden off of homeowners. As new revenues come in, we can make necessary infrastructure improvements, as well as enhance amenities for our residents. Q: What areas of Port St. Lucie do you think present an opportunity for redevelopment and revitalization? What do you think would be an appropriate approach for the city? A: District 1 in eastern Port St. Lucie is among the oldest areas in the city. Anyone who has lived

YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • ST. LUCIE WEST/TRADITION • JUNE 6, 2014 • 9 in Port St. Lucie for any length of time understands the challenges our original city plan created – no downtown and inadequate infrastructure. Over the years, with the addition of water/sewer and redevelopment projects, we are steadily turning this around. We need to continue redevelopment efforts and I would like to see us help our older neighborhoods develop a sense of place, similar to the various neighborhoods created in St. Lucie West – each with a distinctive look and feel. The more pride our residents have in their neighborhoods, the higher the property values and the fewer the challenges. Q: What do you think would make Port St. Lucie a better place to live? A: First and foremost, more and better jobs. Our employment rates are still far too high and too many of our residents have to commute to work. Completion of the Crosstown Parkway will make a huge, positive difference for anyone who needs to travel east-west. More sidewalks, street lights and other infrastructure improvements. Increasing opportunities for our residents to enjoy arts, culture, recreation and shopping options here at home. Development of a unique sense of place for our older

neighborhoods. Q: What sets you apart from the other candidates in this race? A: My experiences … a long career in finance, living in and loving our city for more than a quarter-decade, my years of service to the city, both on the Council and in the community. Q: What are three achievable goals that you would champion during your term in office? A: Ensure that our city continues to foster an environment that is attractive to employers. Finish the Crosstown Parkway. Complete other infrastructure improvements such as sidewalks, street lights, road resurfacing, neighborhood improvements, without increasing the tax rate. Q: What is the most pressing issue for the residents in St. Lucie West and Tradition? A: The residents of St. Lucie West and Tradition have many of the same needs as all residents ... they need good-paying jobs, high levels of service in maintaining and improving their infrastructure and other city services. Completion of the Crosstown Parkway would also directly benefit St.

Lucie West residents by diverting some of the traffic that now uses St. Lucie West Boulevard to access U.S. 1. The parkway will also allow Tradition residents better, quicker access east. Q: How should the city handle the vacant Digital Domain building? A: We need to hire a firm that will represent and market the building to qualified prospects that would be a good fit for the area and that our area would be a good fit for. Q: How can the city help save the Indian River Lagoon? A: While Port St. Lucie does not directly access the lagoon, our beautiful St. Lucie River runs through the city and ultimately intersects with the lagoon. The St. Lucie River and the Indian River Lagoon are the heart of the Treasure Coast and all levels of government should be taking action to protect them from fertilizer ordinances to stringent enforcement of anti-dumping ordinances. Another important thing every government can do is to help educate our residents and businesses about the river, its importance and the things they can do individually and as a community to help.

Meet city council district 1 candidate John DiMola

the three most important concerns facing the city of Port St. Lucie?

For the last nine and a half years, John DiMola has worked at the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Fort Pierce. For most of his employment there, DiMola has been a loss prevention associate. Prior to that, DiMola spent over 20 years in the automotive retail business, both in sales and in management. He studied business management at Indian River State College and has a state security officer license. DiMola has been married to his wife, Rosemarie, for almost 25 years. The couple has one daughter and four grandchildren and has lived in Port St. Lucie for 24 years.

passion for our city, and the need for integrity and trust on the council. There are serious issues that need the attention of a focused council. I am presently a volunteer with the SLC Sheriff’s Office, and until recently a volunteer with the PSLPD. I also have been president and financial secretary of both the Stuart and Palm City Sons of Italy (2002-2012).

Q: What do you perceive as

A: Integrity: Councilmembers cannot violate the trust of the citizens by ignoring our Sunshine Laws (intentional or not), and must be held accountable to the people they represent. Employment: Jobs opportunities flourish when small businesses are created and are successful. We must not restrict small businesses from expanding, and we need to revisit city ordinances that are outdated. Roughly 1/3 of our residents work outside the city and that has to be improved. Debt: Tradition Studios ($40 million) is enough to build 100 miles of sidewalks, and we must recover what we can by the sale of this building. Also, City Center.

A: I am running for Port St. Lucie City Council because I believe District 1 and the city as a whole needs a new voice on the City Council. The people of Port St. Lucie need someone who will listen and communicate more. Oftentimes, decisions are made with little understanding of the possible outcomes. Two examples would be the failure of Digital Domain and the Civic Center Property. Both were poorly researched and cost the city tens of millions of dollars and no easy answers to correct the issues. If elected, I will work hard to remedy these issues and ensure open communication with the people of Port St. Lucie. With my education and business experience, I am confident I can bring a new perspective to the City Council and work with the community to move the city of Port St. Lucie forward by attracting more jobs, helping existing small business, and improving the quali-

ty of life for our residents. Q: What do you perceive as the three most important concerns facing the city of Port St. Lucie? A: The most important concern is our local economy. Port St. Lucie has not recovered as quickly as many parts of the country. There are too many families and businesses in Port St. Lucie that are struggling to stay afloat. The City Council needs to focus more attention on attracting more industry and businesses to Port St. Lucie. By reducing the red tape and offering tax incentives (not handouts), I believe we can attract more companies and provide more blue collar and white collar opportunities. With more jobs and a better working relationship with the business community, we can improve the quality of life and increase opportunities for growth and prosperity. The second and third most important concerns are Digital Domain and the Civic Center property. Each have placed a major financial burden on city resources. They continue to cost the city tens of millions of dollars. Digital Domain needs to be properly marketed and sold as soon as possible to reduce the current $3.4 million cost each year. The City Center property, is an even harder challenge.

The current owner still owes the $8.5 million in back taxes, and we have not heard of her plan for the area. It will be a priority for me, to work towards recovering the back taxes, and encouraging the new owner to follow through with the plans to develop the property in a manner that will benefit the city as a whole. Once we can reduce or eliminate these burdens, the city will have more resources to focus on improving infrastructure such as sidewalks and roads. Q: What are your thoughts related to the city of Port St. Lucie’s relationship with St. Lucie County? What changes can be made to foster a better relationship? A: The city and the county have not worked together as well as they should. More communication between the two will help move both forward and improve the quality of life for both the city and county residents. Q: All cities are facing fiscal challenges. How would you address balancing the budget and consider various alternatives and tradeoffs? A: As stated earlier, Port St. Lucie needs to focus on attracting more businesses to our area. By increasing the job opportunities for both blue and white collar workers, we will in turn improve property values and expand the tax base. More businesses and an expanded tax base will help alleviate many of the city’s fiscal challenges. Q: What areas of Port St. Lucie do you think present an opportunity for redevelopment and revitalization? What do you think would be an appropriate approach for the city? A: The completion of the U.S. 1 corridor, specifically the City Center area and the proper development of the areas west of I-95 should be an important focus for

Leslie provides Thompson with protection when she’s with clients. Thompson told police. “… She stated that David drives her to outcalls where she visits male patrons,” documents state. “Angela gives David half of her pay for every call she goes on.” Police interviewed Thompson at the station before obtaining an arrest warrant on May 15 for Leslie, police spokesman Master Sgt. Frank Sabol said. “A big part of it had to do with the interview with the female,” Sabol said. Investigators also alerted the Department of Children and Families of the two minor children in the home. Leslie is described as 6 feet, 2 inches tall, weighing approximately 200 pounds. He has tattoos on his left and right forearms, upper arms, chest, back and abdomen. Anyone with information is urged to call Detective Abel Alves at (772) 871-5001.

TORINO — Port St. Lucie Police are looking for a Torino man accused of running a prostitution ring from his apartment. Police began building their case against David Hercott Leslie, 30, early last month after receiving an anonymous tip about the alleged ring from Crime Stoppers. Leslie, who is wanted for a felony charge of deriving support from proceeds of prostitution, lives in the 5400 block of Northwest Moorhen Trail in The Sanctuary apartment complex. Investigators met with Leslie at his residence on May 6, where they questioned him and his girlfriend. The couple’s two minor children were present, according to police documents. While there, police heard people talking in the back bedroom of the apartment, documents state. A man and woman exited the room while police were still there. The male told police the two could not agree on a price for sex, so he was leaving. The woman, identified as Angela Thompson, said the room was hers. “As I entered the room, I observed a black chair with a foot stool in front of it,” police wrote in a warrant affidavit. “There was a comforter laid on the floor and two pillows.” The “john” said he and Thompson linked up through an escort ad on www.backpage.com. Thompson was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia after investigators found a crack pipe, syringe and a metal spoon with drug residue on it. Thompson told police she struggles with a bad drug habit she sustains through prostituting with the

Q: All cities are facing fiscal challenges. How would you address balancing the budget and consider various alternatives and trade-offs? A: At budget retreats, go over the budget, line by line in each respective department and identify duplicate or unneeded items. Combine them together or eliminate them without compromising essential services. It’s imperative we reduce our debt service as much as possible (Tradition Studios, City Center). Q: What areas of Port St. Lucie do you think present an opportunity for redevelopment and revitalization? What do you think would be an appropriate approach for the city? A: Controlled limited commercial development on Becker Road from I-95 to the Turnpike with the residents way of life concerns a top priority. Q: What do you think would make Port St. Lucie a better place to live? A: It starts with a City Council that demonstrates the integrity and professionalism that is expected by the citizens of the ninth fastest growing city in Florida (the largest on the Treasure Coast). Port St. Lucie is a sleeping giant about to awake, and our future depends on careful planning and decision-making. With respect, we do not want to become another Broward or Palm Beach County. Port St. Lucie is a special place to live, without the urban sprawl or crime. Preserving our open spaces and way of life, providing quality education, affordable housing and supporting small businesses make great cities, “A City For All Ages.” Q: What sets you apart from the other candidates in this race? A: For one, my passion for the city, which I have made my home 24 years ago. I’m in the security field; character, integrity, judgement, and trust are the highest standards I adhere to, crucial traits to have when serving on the council. Listening to/and responding to concerns of our citizens with respect, who pay our salaries. FORT PIERCE — The neighborhood of Oak Alley is a unique community and GHO Homes is proud to be a part of its resurgence. Located off 25th Street, just north of Midway in Fort Pierce, Oak Alley’s claim to fame is its nature preserves and location. The site plan is laid out to insure privacy for each home with a 15-foot nature area between each home. The community also offers island water features, brick entry walls, community lighting, natural gas, and a community Boat & RV Storage area. Just minutes to I-95, shopping, boat launches, parks and schools, Oak Alley is perfectly located to take advantage of all St Lucie County has to offer. “When looking for new communities to build within, we look for those niche pieces of land that have something unique to offer — Oak Alley definitely fits that bill. You will not find another community in St Lucie County that has as much to offer as Oak Alley — location, security, nature — it is just a winning combination,” Bill Handler, president of GHO Homes, said. GHO Homes will offer a wide variety of floor plans ranging from the Carson at three-bedroom, two-bath, two-car garage homes, at 1,849 square feet to the new Baldwin floor plan with three bedrooms, den, two full baths, three-plus car garage at 2,623 square feet. These homes are priced from $243,990 and have taken advantage of all the unique standard features of a GHO Homes plus the option of shingle, tile or metal roofs. In addition to the extensive list of included features, GHO Homes offers a variety of initiatives that turn building your home into building your dream home. GHO Homes will meet with you and customize our home and floor plan specifically for your needs including structural changes (i.e. larger/longer garages, extended patios or larger kitchens, etc.) as well as interior features (i.e. built-ins, bay windows, crown molding, etc.) Year-to-close program: On most

of the new homes to be built, GHO Homes will delay your obligation to close on your new home for up to one full year from the contract date. This will allow you time to sell your current home and possibly create builtin equity at closing as you may be able to avoid price increases that would have occurred over the year. GHO Homes models will start construction this summer, but don’t wait until then — they already have signed contracts to move forward with customer homes. Visit the GHO Homes model center in Bedford Park to see for yourself what all the excitement is about. Call (772) 257-1100, Ext. 5, email sales@ ghohomes.com or visit online at www.ghohomes.com. Model hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday or by appointment. GHO Homes Corporation is one of South Florida’s premier home builders. They are experienced in building townhomes, single-family homes and custom estate homes. In mid-May, the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society came together to honor and celebrate the incredible young and upcoming talent in our community. Ten students, young musicians from St. Lucie, Martin, and Indian River counties were awarded $1,000 scholarships, courtesy of the Society. To tell you that we were excited to be able to offer ten students an opportunity to continue developing their style, skill, and performance abilities might be a slight understatement. All year long, our members work tirelessly to provide master classes, present performances small and big, and produce fundraisers to help ensure the continuation of jazz and blues - two truly American art forms - continue to burgeon on the Treasure Coast. This year’s scholarship award winners is an exceptionally talented and caring group. In addition to their skill with instruments and musical performance, many of those selected have donated large amounts of time sharing their love of music with others in the community by volunteering with local non-profit organizations and sharing their talents with individuals and

Don Bestor groups which might not otherwise be exposed to such tremendous cultural enrichment and fun. This year may also be unique because it’s the first year we’ve awarded scholarships to siblings - twins no less. Jennifer and Chris Ketcham not only each earned a $1,000 scholarship, but like all the scholarship winners, they also received a complimentary one-year membership to the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society, with all the benefits and privileges that come with being

it. Lincoln Park Academy senior Jennifer Ketcham auditioned on the trumpet, while her brother Chris, auditioned on the drums and vibes this year. Their Lincoln Park classmate, Donovan Kryak, was honored for his skills as a pianist. Jensen Beach High School senior, Austin Newson, auditioned and received his scholarship for his prowess on the bass, and Rosemond Fabien of St. Lucie West Centennial High School wowed the Society’s members and audience on the trumpet. Pine School senior, Kevin Paul, auditioned and was awarded for his vocal, guitar, and piano talents. Indian River student musicians also made a great showing and received the coveted scholarships. Three students from Indian River Charter High School, Dasha Gilmore (violin), Alex Campbell (bass), and Karen Borruso (trombone) were recognized by the judges for their exceptional talent and musicianship. Rounding out the top 10 winners is Vero Beach High School senior, Patrick O’Brien, who impressed the judges on the trombone.

Scholarship Award night is the night we all eagerly anticipate all year long, so it truly is the culmination of the year’s work for all of us at the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society. However, we are constantly cognizant of the fact that we could not do what we do all year long without the support of this community which believes in us, encourages our efforts, and supports our mission through memberships,

D-DAY from page 7 operation ever undertaken. It was more than a ballsy crapshoot to beat Nazi Germany or die trying. No, June 6, 1944, was the day that the Allies put everything they had left into fostering the modern world we live in. Normandy was the place modern humanity started a war against evil itself, evil that went beyond Adolph Hitler. America, the great democratic experiment, faced its greatest challenge on Dec. 7, 1941. Pearl Harbor. The nation was either going to do what those German villagers did — hide our faces from the evil around us in the name of perceived personal safety — or choose to put a huge down payment of blood and gold on world democracy. It picked the inconvenient latter. While democracy is more a continuum than destination, the fact is that today it exists and is slowly growing on every habitable continent. Human rights, too. While there are some very dan-

donations, and by patronizing our weekly Jazz Jams, musical opportunities, and the Jazz Market in Fort Pierce If you’re not a member already, I invite you to join today; it doesn’t cost a lot, but the benefits are both local and global, and the music is bountiful and filled with fun. gerous holdouts against democracy and human rights, the fact is we’re likely on an irreversible march toward their universality that’ll probably bring about eventual world peace. I believe that. And I believe that June 6, 1944, is when the march began in earnest. About 200,000 men faced a hailstorm of death to put their boots on France’s beaches 70 years ago. Many died there. The youngest survivors are nearly 90 now and the last will leave us within two decades. Those who didn’t pay physical prices in the war against evil they stated that day paid dear psychological ones. I’ve seen those scars. D-Day plus 70 years. The fight for world democracy and human rights is still on. If we always have even a drop of the courage they did on June 6 seven decades ago, we’ll win and have honored their sacrifices.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The folks at Fort Pierce Police Athletic League were practically pirouetting with joy when they learned that Fort Pierce PAL is the latest organization to be awarded one of the monthly Dyer Difference Awards. The $3,000 award was granted to the juvenile crime prevention program which provides athletics, recreation, tutoring and alternatives to the street for more than 500 children each year. Staff members from Dyer Chevrolet, who meet monthly to consider all submitted applications and render a decision on the monthly award, were impressed to learn that PAL is not just an after-school program but one which offers positive interaction with law enforcement officers, plus mentoring, sports, field trips, and youth leadership development activities. organization’s largest fundraiser is its annual Dancing With Our PALs competition, about to celebrate its fifth year. The Dyer Difference Program has been in place in Indian River County since 2008. When Dyer acquired the former Bill Schultz Chevrolet on U.S. 1 in Fort Pierce just north of Midway Road, the family, which is passionate about wanting to continue a tradition of community giving started when they relocated to the area in 2008, began accepting applications and preparing to implement the $3,000 monthly award here in St. Lucie County. Nominations are accepted on a rolling basis for the Dyer Difference Award in St. Lucie County, and each month Dyer Chevrolet will announce the winner of that month’s award and present a check for $3,000 to be used to further the mission of the organization. If you know a nonprofit organization doing tremendous things and helping to make St. Lucie County a better community, please consider nominating them for a Dyer Difference

Award by visiting www.dyerdifference.org and clicking on the St. Lucie County link. Organizations nominated must meet the criteria and show current 501c3 status and must be located in St. Lucie County, but the nomination form is simple, user-friendly, and easy to complete for organizations of any size. Nominations are good for a six-month period, and an organization can be recognized with the Dyer Difference Award once per calendar year. If you’d like to nominate an organization or learn more about the Dyer Difference, please visit www. dyerdifference.org today. The deadline for awards is the last day of the month, so stop by today and show your support of the many caring, committed, community non-profit organizations in St. Lucie County. Your simple nomination might help them continue the important work they’re doing in St. Lucie County and help continue the legacy of love created by the Dyer family with the Dyer Difference Award. Are you ready to help make a Dyer Difference?

Sunrise sets movies for summer Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

FORT PIERCE — The Sunrise Theatre started life as a movie theater and its fitting that the theater returns to its roots this summer with six free classic films. Grab a friend or a date, get away from the heat, and enjoy a summer afternoon watching the big screen. The summer event is sponsored by Humana. First up is “As Good as it Gets,” on June 8. The 1997 film, directed by James Brooks, brought Academy Awards to stars Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt, one of the few times stars have taken home both top acting awards. Clint Eastwood stars in “Gran Torino” June 22. Eastwood also directed the 2008 film about a Korean War vet, recently widowed, who thwarts the theft of his classic car and befriends the family of the boy who tried to take it as part of a gang initiation. On July 6, just in time for the holiday weekend, brings 1998’s “Saving Private Ryan.” The film, with Tom Hanks and Matt Damon, won Steven Spielberg a best directing Oscar. It follows a squad searching for a paratrooper who is the last surviving brother of four service members. It begins with 27 minutes if the assault on Omaha Beach June

6, 1944. Spielberg was also the director for a very different kind of film July 20. “ET-the Extraterrestrial,” stars Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Drew Barrymore and the alien who has to phone home. “Bucket List” has become a term everyone under-

stands, and it’s hard to believe that it comes from a movie as recent as 2007. The comedy-drama, shown Aug. 3, stars Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman and is directed by Rob Reiner. It follows two terminally ill men on a road trip with a wish list of things they want to do before they “kick the bucket.” Today, it seems everyone has a bucket list and you don’t have to be terminally ill to pursue it. On Aug. 17, the 1985 comedy-drama “Co-

coon,” will be shown. Shot in Florida, it has an all-star cast of Don Ameche, who won an Oscar, Wilford Brimley, Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, and others. Directed by Ron Howard, it tells the story of a group of elderly people rejuvenated by aliens. Anne Satterlee, the Sunrise Theatre’s public relations and development director, said in a written statement that the Sunrise was pleased to work with Humana on the project. “We are extremely pleased to partner again with Humana on the Summer Time Movie Series at the Sunrise,” she said. “The six movies are free to the public and provide entertainment opportunities to our active senior citizenry, which is important toward achieving lifelong wellness.” Tickets are available at the Sunrise Theatre box office Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and two hours prior to each movie. There is a limit of four tickets per person and tickets are subject to availability. What would a good movie be without candy and popcorn? The Sunrise has a complete concession stand to purchase refreshments. The Sunrise Theatre is located at 117 S. Second St. Fort Pierce. For more information about the movies, call (772) 461-4775. For more information about the theater, visit the website, www.sunrisetheatre.com.

MARTIN COUNTY — The Lyric season, as always, has a little noise, a little funk, and a little something for every taste. Last week’s story gave details on the Nostalgia and Broadway series. For this week, the focus is the best of the rest of the season. Clint Black makes his Lyric debut Nov. 20-21. The superstar singer/songwriter is known for selling more than 20 million albums, but fans may not know that he is proficient on the drums and harmonica as well as the guitar. The National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China pres-

ent “Cirque Peking” in a kick off to the holiday season Dec. 1. A familiar trio, “A Peter White Christmas,” with guests Rick Braun and Mindi Abair, returns with old holiday favorites and some of their own compositions Dec. 12. Steve Solomon brings his show, “Cannoli, Latkes and Guilt” to the Lyric Jan. 6. The writer and star of “My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish and I’m in Therapy” brings a new show that’s the best of his other shows and has new material, as well. Lyric favorites Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. return Jan. 7. The seven-time Grammy winners are always a popular ticket. “Vocal Trash” comes to the

stage Jan. 15. The group has been described as ‘Glee meets Stomp,’ and the urban-themed production is full of singing, drumming, comedy and break-dancing. It is hard to believe, but 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice Restaurant.” He returns to the Lyric Jan. 26-27 with the 50th anniversary tour, a new program that explores uses humor to explore the history of American folk music in the 20th century. Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers comes to the Lyric Jan. 29, playing the famed “Molitor” Stradivarius, the most sought-after violinist in the world. The instrument is believed to have belonged to Napoleon and is rarely heard in public. The Capitol Steps bring political punditry to the stage Jan. 30 in a show in which partial proceeds will benefit Volunteers in Medicine. Vince Gill returns to the Lyric, this time as part of Grammy-nominated group The Time Jumpers, for which he plays electric and acoustic guitar and sings. The Feb. 5 performance features the 11-piece group of elite musicians that also includes Dawn and Kenny Sears and “Ranger Doug” Green. Fans of dance will have the opportunity to see a great dance company and a Tony-award-winning dancer. Ailey II, an offshoot of the famed Alvin Ailey Dance Company, is renowned for taking the spirit and energy of young performers and melding that with the vision of emerging chorographers. They will perform Feb. 9-10. Savion Glover, one of the youngest performers ever nominated for a Tony, for his work in “Black and Blue,” returns to the Lyric Feb. 24. He won a Tony for the choreography of “Bring in ‘Da Funk, Bring in ‘Da Noise,” and played a young Jelly Roll Morton in “Jelly’s Last Jam” on Broadway. Regis Philbin brings an evening of big-band music Feb. 15 as he performs with an 18-piece orchestra. Blues legend John Hammond brings his barrelhouse sound to the Lyric stage Feb. 19. The Blues Hall of Fame acoustic guitar player performed was a fixture in New York City’s Greenwich Village, performing with artists like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Dr. John and Duane Allman. Lyric audience favorite Sarge returns to the Lyric Feb. 27 with a performance that includes

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com singing, comedy and piano-playing. The multi-talented performer has been seen on Comedy Central and HBO. Pure Prairie League, one of the earliest and most successful country rock bands, takes the Lyric stage March 6. “Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry experience-A Parody by Dan & Jeff,” has the longest name of any show. The Olivier Award-nominated parody of all of the “Harry Potter” books is suitable for ages 6 to Dumbledore. It comes to the Lyric March 7-8. Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, husband and wife and master fiddlers, bring their native Canada to the Lyric in “Visions from Cape Breton and beyond” March 19-20. Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals brings the pop-soul sound of the group that sang “Groovin” “and “Good Lovin” to the Lyric March 24. Local legend Doc Grober returns with his Mudcats March 26 with a tribute to Louis Armstrong. LTD: Livingston Taylor, Tom Chapin and The Jammin’ Divas come together for folk music for the 21st century March 27. John Loesser, the lyric’s executive director, said that shows will continue to be added. “We’ll probably add about 10 shows over the summer,” he said. “A lot of pop artists don’t book that far out.” In other Lyric news, Loesser noted that the theater would be closed for renovations from June through October and will re-open sometime in November with yet-to-be announced special festivities. “It will be a nice facelift,” he said. “We’re remodeling the lobby, there will be new seating in the lobby, new entrances, technical improvements and a new lobby bar. All the orchestra level seating is being replaced with top-of-the line chairs with cup holders. Seats will be in the same locations as the old ones.” Sales for the new season go on sale the day after Labor Day, although members can purchase them now. Anyone can become a member and purchase tickets immediately. Memberships start at $35. “Over the summer, there will be a box office at the Stuart Coffee Company next door to the Lyric,” Loesser said. “You can also order online.” For membership and ticket information for the upcoming Lyric Theatre season, visit the website, www.lyrictheatre.com. Or call the box office at (772) 286-7827. The number will remain operational during the renovations.
