ST. LUCIE WEST — As the varsity West Centennial football players were refining their skills on the main practice field, those looking up to them were having their own camp session next to them. Port St. Lucie West Centennial Line Coach Troy Surloff led the camp to teach kids the fundamentals. There were about 25 in attendance from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, but Surloff said numbers are usually down after a holiday weekend. The camp usually has more than 40, he said.
Charlie Passinante Jr. said the camp allows his son Charlie Passinante III to discover new interests. “He likes to stay active, so it keeps him out of trouble,” he said. It also helps his son learn proper, basic techniques in case he wants to keep playing as he gets older. “They may think football is just going out and scoring touchdowns. There’s a lot of work to it,” Charlie Passinante Jr. said. Players were taught how to warm up with different agility drills with frequent water breaks in between to cool down from the

TRADITION — Communities with residents 55 and up may soon be built in Tradition.
At last week’s Planning and Zoning Board meeting, residents said they opposed an amendment to the Tradition master plan that would permit Minto Communities, LLC to build duplexes. The board unanimously approved the amendment with a
condition that Minto withdraw a site plan application that included duplexes on Model Row and existing neighborhoods within Town Park. The City Council must approve the amendment before it goes into effect, however. Residents primarily opposed
55-plus communities being built, which many thought was the inevitable next step. They are probably correct. Don Hearing, an agent contracted by Minto, said after the

ST. LUCIE WEST — Don Santos, owner of Santos Construction Company, watched his beloved housing industry crash a few years ago, leaving thousands of local folks unemployed. The Vietnam veteran started working with anyone and everyone he could to help fix the economic problems. He said that was a natural outgrowth of serving in the military. “Something I think the military gives everyone is the skill of leadership,” he said. “I don’t mean management. I mean leadership. You’re responsible for (subordinates) and responsible for getting the job done and leading your men to get the job done.” CareerSource Research Coast recently announced that Santos will be the vice chairman of the board for the next two years. Pamela Houghten, vice president of administration & outreach at Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies in Tradition, is the new chairwoman. “During the literally depression we had on the Treasure Coast in
2008, 2009, many of the guys who worked for me lost their jobs,” Santos said. “They had an opening on the board of directors at CareerSource. I wanted to participate because I wanted to make sure guys in (home building) could find jobs.” That was in 2010. Things were tougher than ever for the Sunshine State, especially in St. Lucie County. In June 2009, at the end of the international recession, Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was at 10.6 percent. That was higher than any other month going back to October 1975 when the state was at 11 percent. The nation had an adjusted unemployment rate of 9.5 that month. While some of the nation seemed to start making tiny bits of economic progress right around the second half of ‘09, Florida’s unemployment had more to show. The state’s unemployment didn’t peaked until about January 2010. There was a statewide 11.9 percent seasonally adjusted unemployment rate that month. St. Lucie County checked in with

Treasure Coast takes early lead in veteran nursing home search Staff writer
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
TREASURE COAST — Tradition has taken an early top spot in the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs’ hunt for a place to put its next veterans nursing home. “St. Lucie (County) had more points than anyone else, followed by Marion County,” Steve Murray, site selection committee member and communications director at the FDVA, said. The Florida Department of Veterans Affairs is not associated with the federal Department of Veterans Affairs. The state veterans department now operates six nursing homes with 120 beds each, and an assisted living facility with 150. The nursing homes are, by far, the FDVA’s largest function. The 10 site-selection committee members met by conference call on Tuesday, July 1, to discuss their thoughts after visiting nine prospective sites in six counties. Murray said they used score sheets to grade the perspective
locations. He was unsure how strong Tradition’s lead was. The committee members are going to mail their score sheets for review. After verifying the perspective sites’ initial placements “A recommendation will be made to (Mike Prendergast) our executive director of the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs,” Murray said. Prendergast will give the committee’s recommendation to Gov. Rick Scott and Florida Cabinet at an Aug. 19 meeting. The governor and cabinet will decide where the next veterans’ nursing home will be. “They don’t have to (follow the committee’s recommendation), but, I can tell you with the previous seven homes, the governor and cabinet have not gone against us,” Murray said in a previous interview. The cabinet is made up of the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, Commissioner of Agriculture, Adam Putnam, and Chief Financial Officer, Jeff Atwater. Wayne Teegardin, St. Lucie County veterans services manager, is leading efforts to get the veterans nursing home on the
to the announcement that the Treasure Coast is likely to get the next home with two words. “About time,” the Vero Beach resident said. “The population we have in this area — we’ve been needing one

Independence Recovery Picnic supports a sober lifestyle New Horizons of the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee has a 28-day substance abuse treatment program called Independence Recovery. Due to financial constraints they have only six beds. Those six beds have saved countless lives and more importantly have transformed people from a life of barely existing to one of being useful and whole in society. Thousands of people have come through New Horizons to get clean and sober. When people are destitute and can’t stop drinking or using drugs they need a place to go. New Horizons Detox has historically been the answer for the family and friends of addicts and alcoholics who are out of control or near death. Hospitals in the area refer to New Horizons and most Crisis Intervention Team trained police officers know New Horizons provides a safe haven for those at the end of their rope. Last Saturday at Kimberly Bergalis Park in Fort Pierce over 60 people, alumni and their families, came together for the first Independence Recovery Alumni Picnic. Sober and clean graduates organized the event to celebrate their new lease on
life and to promote fellowship. There are thousands of alumni that began their recovery at New Horizons. Many have gone on to live purposeful lives. We urge all that if you have gone to detox or independence recovery at New Horizons, you call (772) 672-8333 so we can put you on the list to include you and your family in the many events our alumni group will be organizing throughout the year. It is an opportunity to give back to newcomers and show them that there is a wonderful life in sobriety. A private, nonprofit organization established in 1958, New Horizons of the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee’s mission is to deliver accessible behavioral and primary health care services to children, adults and families to achieve mental and physical wellness, thereby improving the quality of life in our community. SANTOS from page 3 a 14.9 percent not adjusted unemployment rate. “It would not surprise me to find out we were having an effective unemployment rate at 30 percent (counting discouraged workers),” Santos said. “If you count the underemployed, those who couldn’t pay their bills, it was probably higher than that.” According to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s last jobs report, released on June 20, St. Lucie County weighed in with a 7.7 percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in May. The state had a 6.3 percent seasonally adjusted unemployment rate. Back at Santos Construction during the building slump, things had gone from building six to eight $400,000 to $500,000 houses a year to one or two. Santos saw one of St. Lucie’s problems right away. “We need diversification in our economy,” Santos said. “We cannot rely on residential construction to be the engine of the train.” He added, “Homes are where jobs go at night. Bring a job that pays $40,000, $50,000 a year, don’t worry; we’ll be building that guy a house.” Santos said he hopes to spend his time as vice chairman continuing to raise awareness about and helping to solve two issues. One — those who’ve worked in construction fields for decades can’t easily transition to others. Two — while progress has happened for veterans employment, it’s not enough until every veteran who wants to work has the chance. “It’s very difficult to take a 50-year-old who’s been a plumber all his life and turn him into a bio-physicist,” Santos said. “That’s not going to happen.” Things are improving for construction in St. Lucie, and some of those jobs are coming back. Building permits dropped sharply from a monthly average of 632 in 2007 to 367 in 2010. In 2011, things picked up to about 413 permits a month. By 2012, that rose to a monthly average of about 495. Things dipped in 2013, about 475 a month, but rebounded this year. So far in 2014, the county has issued an average of 559 building permits a month. At the same time, property values are rising, said Ken Pruitt, property appraiser. He recently told Your Voice News & Views that St. Lucie’s taxable value is up 2.5 percent from last year, and he expects that trend to continue for the foreseeable future. Santos agreed. “I see (property) prices going up, construction coming up and the economy of the Treasure Coast
www.YourVoiceWeekly.com getting healthy,” Santos said. About fellow veterans, Santos said: “The military life is different than the civilian life. If you’ve been in military life for a long time, getting back into civilian life is scary.” For a few years, veterans famously had above-average unemployment rates, prompting numerous federal, state and private efforts to help them find jobs. In an emailed response to queries for a previous story, Jessica Sims, press secretary, said about 27,300 veterans found employment through the Department of Economic Opportunity’s various veterans services last year. From January to May this year, another 11,500 have. That’s a slight average daily increase from 74.85 to 76.15. Sims said that the current population survey 2013 annual average unemployment rate for Florida veterans was 6.1 percent, verses 7.1 for others. Nationally, the CPS 2013 average unemployment rate for veterans was 6.6 percent. For others it was 7.2. Back in the mid-60’s, Santos, a Boston native, graduated from the Cradle of Liberty’s Northeastern University. He entered the Army and got a gig in the Corps of Engineers as a junior officer. When he was discharged in the early ‘70s, Santos got a business degree from Louisiana State University, then headed to Fort Lauderdale to work with his father in law. Santos eventually started a building company in Coral Springs. Then he got an offer from Paul “Pete” Hegener, president of Core Communities. Hegener, who died in 2012, played key roles in developing St. Lucie West and Tradition. “Pete was a true visionary,” Santos said. “At that time St. Lucie West was almost in bankruptcy. He came down to Broward County and talked with my partners and me and asked us if we’d come up and build.” Santos loved the area. “I built my own home and live here in Heatherwood,” he said. “I’m one of the rare builders who actually lives in a community he built.” The state has 24 regional workforce-development organizations under what used to be Workforce Florida, the state’s workforce-development program under the Department of Economic Opportunity. Each of the 24 is an independent, not-for-profit agency, and all used different names. The Florida Legislature enacted a bill in 2012 to unify them to a common name: CareerSource. CareerSource Research Coast covers Indian River, Martin Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties.

FOOTBALL from page 1 hot, humid weather. Soon after, they were taught how to get into a proper three-point stance. Some glanced over at the varsity players, probably to get a look at how they were doing it, Charlie included. “When we got here, he said, ‘Dad, I don’t see any kids here, just big guys.’ He’s doing his thing, but I’m sure he’s watching (the varsity players). They all are,” Charlie Passinante Jr. said. Sometimes after their practice, the varsity players help teach the kids techniques, so they’ll be ready to take over at the varsity level. Denver Broncos linebacker and Fort Pierce native Jamar Chaney even made an appearance to talk to the kids, Surloff said. “We all tell them how and why they should do certain things. Sometimes they go into the next league and don’t understand the basics,” Surloff said. At the end of drills, there was a 7-on-7 game and the kids got Arby’s to conclude. “They always get excited about what kind of food we have for the day,” Surloff said. The last camp of the year runs July 14 – 17. For more information, call the Misnky Gym at (772) 344-4142.

Largest state property insurer set to decrease most rates Staff writer
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Florida’s largest property insurer recommended rate cuts for about 70 percent of policy holders statewide for the first time in four years. The remaining 30 percent — mostly condominium owners will see rate increases. The Citizens Property Insurance Governors’ Board approved the recommendation June 25 and must now be approved by the Office of Insurance Regulation before they go into effect. If approved, St. Lucie County
NURSING from page 4 for quite some time,” Humphries said. “We’ve been harping on this for the longest time to get one built.” The Tradition Land Company donated about 28 acres to St. Lucie County to bolster its bid to get the next home. During its 2013 session, the Florida Legislature approved about $100,000 for an independent study to determine whether a new veteran nursing home was needed and, if so, where it should go. Scott and the cabinet considered the study, which Health Strategies did, at a February meeting in Tampa. The governor and cabinet opted to send letters to the top 10 counties the study identified as good places for veterans homes requesting letters of interest back from them. “Eight of the 10 counties did send us letters of intent telling us they were interested in bidding,” Murray said in a previous interview. Murray said that St. Lucie and Palm Beach counties were in that list. Palm Beach didn’t send a letter of intent. Others on the list were Lee, Collier, Polk, Manatee,
homeowners with a multi-peril policy — one that covers theft, vandalism, hail, fire, wind, lightning and explosion damage — will see a 9 percent decrease. Condo-owners with a multi-peril policy would see a 3.2 percent increase, however. Homeowners with a wind-only policy would see a 3.7 percent increase, and condo owners’ wind-only rates would rise 8.6 percent. State law requires all increases and decreases to be capped at 10 percent. The increases are partially a reflection of increased water-related claims, Citizens’ officials said. The rates largely reflect the fact that Florida hasn’t been victim to
any hurricanes in eight seasons, which has contributed to a $7.3 billion surplus, Citizen’s officials said. “Following five years of prudent rate filings … actuarial estimates now indicate rate reductions are in order for a significant number of our policyholders,” Chris Gardner, chairman of Citizens’ Board of Governors said. The company is still about two years away from having “actuarially sound” numbers for windrates, John Rollins, chief risk officer for Citizens, said at the meeting. One governor board member, Tom Lynch, said he was concerned about the proposed decreases because they could leave
the company in a vulnerable position down the road if more people take on new customers. “If the hurricane hits or when it hits, because we know it’s going to hit, we’re going to be in trouble,” he said, adding that the company’s goal should not be to attract new customers and only allow the new, decreased rates for current policy holders. Lynch’s suggestion is not allowed, however, Rollins said. The Office of Insurance Regulation will have to act on the recommendation within 45 days. If they approve it, the rates will go into effect starting either January or February for multi-peril owners and February for wind-only policy-holders.
Hillsborough, Marion, Putnam and Sumter. The closest veteran nursing home to the Treasure Coast is the Alexander “Sandy” Nininger Veterans’ Nursing Home, 8401 W. Cypress Drive, Pembroke Pines. The next closest is the Emory L. Bennett State Veterans’ Nursing Home, 1920 Mason Ave., Daytona Beach. Bennett was built in 1993. Nininger in 2001. Murray said the last home was built in 2010. That was the Clyde E. Lassen State Veterans’ Nursing Home in St. Augustine. That home cost about $30 million to build. The state paid about 35 percent of the costs. The VA paid about 65 percent. Other homes are in Land O’ Lakes, Panama City and Port Charlotte. The assisted living facility is in Lake City. Murray said the FDVA has the needed money for its share to go forward with building a state veterans nursing home because of changes the legislature made to its trust funds last session. The trust has about $47 million. Teegardin said in a previous interview that there are numerous reasons Tradition and the Treasure Coast would benefit from a veterans home.
“They’re supposed to hire around 190 people to run it, in addition to the construction jobs it’ll create,” he said. The home would serve veterans for about a 75-mile radius. Teegardin said that makes Tradition
an ideal location for a veterans home. “(The local) 75-mile radius is estimated to have 211,647 veterans in it,” he said “Of those, 112,758 are over age 65, which is the target of the nursing home.”

Remote doctoring for Martin Memorial Health Systems makes for better care Staff writer
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
TRADITION — Martin Memorial Health System doctors and nurses are now better equipped to treat those who facing life-threatening injuries and illnesses with Tradition Medical Center’s new intensive care unit. The new ICU allows health care professionals to interact with a patient remotely through a monitor. The system provides them with a live feed of vital information to help the Tradition staff provide better care. It’s a relatively exclusive program — one of only a handful in the state and the only one along the Treasure Coast, Martin Memorial communications specialist Donna Murphy said. The remote physicians, who are employed by Advanced ICU, are stationed in St. Louis, New York City and India. The Tradition facility mostly works with those in St. Louis, said Martin Memorial
Health System Director of Nursing, Susan Clark. “It does not replace any of our staff or physicians,” she said. Each remote physician is accredited through Martin Memorial Health System, Clark said. When a remote physician patches in, a camera turns on next the monitor on the wall and swings to face the patient. It may seem odd at first, but Clark said it’s all to help the patient. During many instances, a physician’s presence in the room is required to monitor a patient, which takes him or her away from the emergency room. Clark said the remote physician’s presence frees up the Tradition staff to eliminate the tie-up. Families can also ask questions to the specialists when their normal physician can’t be in the room. During hectic situations, despite being more than 1,000 miles away, the physicians can provide vital information to patients, families and physicians

vital information and conducting assessments on each ICE patient,” Clark said.

TRADITION — Port St. Lucie finally has a potential Tradition Studios buyer, but that doesn’t mean the decision to sell will be an easy one. Keenan Development Group placed a bid on behalf of Keiser University, making many believe the city would miss out on yearly taxes due to the university’s nonprofit status. That would make it more difficult for the city to pay down past debt accrued from the Digital Domain saga that left city with $3.45 million yearly payments. The school’s nonprofit status may not matter, however. Vice Mayor Linda Bartz said she spoke with Keenan Development’s president Bill Keenan because she was concerned over the city potentially missing out on those
The former Digital Domain Studios building in Tradition funds. She said Keenan told her that Keiser would not be the owner and that his firm would be, meaning the city could reap the tax benefits. Mayor JoAnn Faiella said the council’s vision is to bring a university to the site, but the Keiser offer was a surprise. Keiser isn’t the only university vying for the site though. Councilwoman Michelle Berger spoke to the council about her plans to seek interested university administrators about bringing

a branch to Tradition with the council backing her, Bartz said. If Keiser’s deal is approved, the university would consolidate its other two Port St. Lucie campuses into one, according to the school’s chancellor, Arthur Keiser. That may be good for Keiser but not necessarily for the city, Bartz said. “That would leave us with two more vacant buildings,” she said. Keenan representatives were not available for comment as of Tuesday.

PORT ST. LUCIE — Two men were charged with trafficking oxycodone and heroin June 2 after Port St. Lucie police found them outside of Springhill Suites along Country Club Drive. Beron Collins, 30, and Scott Matthews, 26, were found outside the hotel with a backpack containing 56 grams of heroin — mostly in capsule form, 3 grams of crack cocaine, nine hydrochloride capsules, two packages of Suboxin, a Super EQ multivitamin and over 6 grams of oxycodone, according to arrest affidavits. They were also charged with marijuana possession, possession of an opium derivative, possession of drug equipment and possession of a harmful new legend drug (an FDA-approved prescription drug) without a prescription. Both men are homeless but were residing at the hotel\, the affidavits said. Each are being held at St. Lucie County Jail with Collin’s bond set at $165,000 and Matthews’ at $170,000. Matthews said he was a “middle-man dealer” for Collins, the affidavit states.

ST. LUCIE WEST — Two men were arrested and charged in burglarizing the Vineyards and County Club Estates in late May and mid-June. Alexander Saridakis, 32, was arrested June 30 after police used Vineyards’ surveillance footage to determine his black Ford truck was used to steal a refrigerator, cooler, washer and a freezer — worth a total of $2,950 — from 874 S.W. Grand Reserve Blvd. May 29. Police were noti-
fied two days later, according to arrest affidavits. The truck was hauling an enclosed silver trailer, apparently with the items in tow. The affidavit states that two men were in the vehicle, wearing yellow vests. Saridakis, of West Palm Beach, was one, police said. The investigation continued when another burglary was reported at Country Club Estates June 14. Witnesses described two suspects as wearing yellow safety vests, work gloves and driving a black pickup with a silver trailer. The two allegedly stole a refrigerator and oven — a total value
of $1,500, the affidavit states. Two days later, the pair took a white Ford Expedition, valued at $5,000, from another Country Club Estates home. After being arrested, Saridakis said his accomplice was “Mike T,” police said. An anonymous tip suggested the other burglar was Bruce Fong, 39, of Port St. Lucie. Fong was arrested June 3. Each are facing one count of grand theft auto, two counts of grand theft and three counts of burglary. Saridakis posted $60,000 bond June 2, and Fong posted $60,000 bond last Monday.

SLC Commissioner Johnson earns FAC Certified County Commissioner Designation

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Florida Association of Counties presented St. Lucie County Commissioner Kim Johnson with the Certified County Commissioner designation following the commissioner’s completion of a comprehensive study program developed by the association. Johnson received the designation with 41 other county commissioners during an awards ceremony held at the FAC Annual Conference in Orange County, Fla. “The Florida Association of Counties’ Certified County Commission program is the ultimate means for newly elected officials to becoming educated governmentally, stimulated professionally and committed continuously to provide services in counties successfully,” said Johnson. Commissioner Johnson joins the rest of the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners,
who have all received the designation, including chair Frannie Hutchinson, vice chair Paula Lewis and commissioners Chris Dzadovsky and Tod Mowery. The certification is not a requirement to serve as a county commissioner in Florida. However, county commissioners may voluntarily enroll in the program and complete a series of courses totaling 42 hours. The coursework is designed to provide information and enhance skills relevant to a commissioner’s duties and responsibilities as an elected official. “This certification allows our citizen electorate to become experts in county government improving their communities,” said FAC executive director Chris Holley. “The 380 graduates of this program is a testament to the importance of this curriculum to Florida’s public servants and our counties” The Certified County Commissioner program coursework covers a variety of topics, such

Fort Pierce Buick entering new era FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
The demolition continues at Fort Pierce Buick. Kevin Hester, managing partner of the dealership, said that the main building is scheduled to start coming down en masse on July 21. “It’s been a really big process
up to this point” said Hester. “Most people don’t realize all the prep that needs to be done to just get it to the point of tearing it down, especially when you are still doing business out of the location.” “We were fortunate enough to be able to donate all of the existing furniture and anything else they wanted from the building to
Reich
a local charity, Habitat for Humanity.” A temporary building has been brought in to house the sales and financing departments but the service and body shop will continue to operate out of the existing facility. “We’re just having fun selling cars and making new friends during this ‘unique’ period before
the new state-of-the-art building is completed,” Hester said. “We’re able to offer great values and great deals to our new and used car customers.” Completion of the Used Car Building is projected to be in late November. The construction of the main building is scheduled to be complete by the end of June 2015.

DUPLEX from page 1 meeting that Tradition 55-plus community plans are likely six to eight months away from being proposed. “We will help them understand how 55-plus communities function, that they aren’t going to hurt the community. They are all over Florida,” Hearing said. Tradition residents said during the meeting that they had first learned of the duplex and 55-plus community plans last Monday night, the day before they were brought to the Planning and Zoning Board. Hearing said he and other representatives should have met with the residents sooner to let them know what was being proposed. “We will meet with residents long before (plans) come back to this board again,” Hearing promised the board. One by one, five residents approached the podium to tell the commission why they thought the amendment was a bad idea, with applause from about 70 residents in the crowd, seemingly opposing it, too. Luis Pagan spoke first, concerned about there being more

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie is encouraging owners of local residential buildings to go Smoke-free because Smokefree policies can protect residents from secondhand smoke and smoking-related fires. Smoke-free multi-unit housing is a growing trend throughout the country and is making its way to Florida. Across the state, there are more than 500 smoke-free multi-unit housing properties and 73,000 smoke-free units. Residential properties in and around St. Lucie County have already implemented smoke-free policies. “There is a fear of alienating resident smokers, but most communities that have taken the leap consider smoke-free housing an edge over the competition and have determined that there is a market for this product,” said Chip Tatum, the former Government Affairs director for the Florida Apartment Association. For property managers and landlords, smoke-free policies can have economic benefits. More than 80 percent of Floridians are non-smokers. Many people who do smoke do not permit smoking in their homes. Given these numbers, many properties have very successfully marketed their smoke-free policy as an amenity, not a restriction. Smoke-free policies can save money by eliminating the need to repair or replace carpeting, floors, fixtures, countertops or appliances damaged by burns or nicotine stains. At the end of a lease, smoke-free units require less turnover time due to fewer preparation and repainting needs. In one Florida survey of 421 managers of smoke-free properties, 99.5 percent of the managers agreed that smoke-free policies do not hurt occupancy and 30.1 percent believed that they increased occupancy. Tobacco smoke can move along air ducts, through cracks in the walls and floors, through elevator shafts and along plumbing and electrical lines affecting units that are nearby. Therefore, there are also numerous benefits for residents as tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, hundreds of which are toxic and at least 70 known to cause cancer. Exposure, even for short periods of time, can be dangerous.
“A home should be a safe place for everyone, especially for children, people with existing health conditions and the elderly who are more vulnerable to the effects of secondhand smoke,” said Larry Lee, county health officer. “By making sure that residential buildings are 100 percent smokefree, property managers are protecting tenants from the dangers of toxic smoke and from the risk of deadly smoking-related fires.” The following are some of the reasons why it’s critical to protect tenants from exposure to secondhand smoke: • Secondhand smoke exposure is causally linked to heart disease, stroke, several cancers, lower respiratory illness, and impaired lung function.[v] • Each year, among U.S. nonsmokers, exposure to secondhand smoke causes an estimated 33,000 premature deaths from heart disease and about 3,400 premature deaths from lung cancer. • Nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke at home or at work increase their risk of developing heart disease by 25 to 30 percent and their risk of developing lung cancer by 20 to 30 percent. • Secondhand smoke can trigger an asthma attack. A severe asthma attack can put a child’s life in danger. • In the first two years of life, children exposed to secondhand smoke have more than a 50 percent increased risk of getting bronchitis and pneumonia. • Infants exposed to secondhand smoke are at a greater risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). SIDS is the sudden, unexplained, unexpected death of an infant in the first year of life. SIDS is the leading cause of death in otherwise healthy infants. • Secondhand smoke is not the only danger associated with tobacco use at home. Smoking-related fires are the leading cause of fire deaths in residential buildings. These fires are eight times more likely to result in death than fires that start from another source. Smoking-related fires in residential buildings result in an average of approximately 365 deaths, 925 injuries, and $326 million in property loss each year. For more information, visit tobaccofreeflorida.com/smokefreehousing, or call Brenda Montoyo at (772) 785-6143 or email Brenda. Montoya@flhealth.gov.

PORT ST. LUCIE — BRBarbara is a photographic artist who began her career taking photos of her family. When she began taking courses at a community college in New Jersey, she fell in love with it. “I got hooked,” she said. “We used to develop in a darkroom, and one of the most amazing things was when the picture came on the page. I took as many courses as I could and went on to the International Center of Photography in New York. Initially, it was photos of the family and then I went professional. I started with a small website and then a larger one.” The artist’s work will be on display at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center from July 17 - Sept. 11. She said that it was an honor to be selected by the juried selection process. “It’s very hard to break into photography,” she said. “A lot of professional photographers do portraits or commercial photography. If you visit their websites, there are one or two artistic photos. The real passion is in the artistic photos.” The photographer and her late husband moved to

Florida in 2001. “My husband and I always wanted to come to Florida,” she said. “When we were first married, the first time we visited my in-laws, we loved it. He was in computers, and there were no jobs. He took early retirement, and we moved to Florida. We had 10 years before he passed away.” BRBarbara’s work covers a wide array of subjects. “My work is photographic prints,” she said. “I did a series on the American flag. I do florals, human interest, seascapes, animals and architecture. I like to photograph different subject matter. People have varied interests. I’m also a digital artist. I create artwork on Adobe Photoshop. Some of the digital work will be in the (Civic Center) show. I’ll be exhibiting a variety of photographic and digital art.” Locally, the artist is involved with the Palm Beach Photographic Center and will have work displayed at an upcoming juried photographic exhibit at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Her work is framed and available for sale on her website. BRBarbara is especially proud
of a photographic collage she has of her husband. Her daughter has a larger version; she keeps a smaller one in her office. It gives her so much pleasure that she will do photo collages and mixed media collages of favorite memories on commission. “I like it and turn around and look at all the pictures and memories,” she said, “Some of it goes back to the early years as well as late. There’s one of us with our dog. I set the camera on a tripod.” For the artist, it is evokes fond memories and images in her mind. What more can you ask of a photograph? Photographic artist BRBarbara will present her work at the Port St. Lucie Civic center Art Gallery, 9221 S.E. Civic Center Place, beginning July 17 and running through Sept. 11. The event is free and open to the public. The gallery is open Monday-Friday from 8:15 a.m.-4:15 p.m. The exhibit will begin with a free reception at the gallery July 17 from 6-8 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and there will live music for the reception. For more information about the artist, visit her website at www. BRBarbara.com.
