TRADITION — A development firm representing Keiser University has placed a bid to purchase the former Digital Domain space in hopes of taking the costly center off the city’s hands after being vacant for the past two years. The school’s chancellor, Arthur Keiser, said the plan is to move the existing Port St. Lucie campuses — its main campus along U.S. 1 and its College of Golf and Sports Management in St. Lucie West — into the vacant 115,000-square-foot facility. “There’s a wonderful community presence there, and the building is nice,” Keiser said. “We think it will be good for us.”

Foreclosure rates lower this year Brandon Zeris Staff writer

bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Foreclosure rates have drastically decreased in the past year, and the backload of foreclosed homes

has reduced with more properties being sold at auction. As of June 27, there were 784 new foreclosures recorded, but, at this time last year, there were 1,309 filed. County Clerk Joseph Smith said one of the primary reasons is a state law passed year that inadvertently made it more

difficult for banks to move quickly through the foreclosure process. The law, that went into effect in July, was supposed to make the process easier and dubbed by many as the “fast foreclosure” law. It appeared that the law would make it harder for distressed owners to reclaim their

properties, but Smith said new requirements for banks to provide additional documentation made the process harder to foreclose on properties. A requirement for cases to be manually reviewed, rather than

Cosmetic procedures give lift to self-esteem Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PORT ST. LUCIE — When Dr. Daniel Holley, of Holley Surgical Arts in St. Lucie West and Stuart, began his career, he was going to be a surgical oncologist, operating on cancer patients. “I had to do a year of cancer research,” he said. “I went into the surgeries. The cancer surgeons were dark and unhappy. The plastic surgeons doing reconstruction were happier. You’re operating on a person’s persona, his or her self-image. It’s how they feel about themselves. It’s a unique area of medicine.” That experience led Dr. Holley to plastic surgery, and while he does the full complement of surgeries, procedures and fillers, he also does a good deal of reconstructive surgery for patients with breast cancer and skin cancers, where they have had Mohs surgery to remove a cancerous lesion and now need reconstruction. That area is very exciting. Holley said that in the next 10-15 years, doctors will be able to use a patient’s own cells for reconstruction. Still, the most common procedure is the face life. “We do a tremendous number,” he said. “The newest thing is that we do them in the office under local anesthesia. The patient comes into the office and goes home in three hours. They can eat and drink the day

of the surgery. In two days, they’re showering and washing their hair and the stiches come out in a week. They can be out and about with make up on about two weeks. It’s less risky and more amenable to our active lifestyle. It’s a new twist on an old procedure.” While plastic surgery used to be the province of women, that is no longer the case. “We’re seeing many more men,” he said. “There are a variety of reasons. It’s acceptable. A generation or two ago, ‘vanity’ was only for women. Now men care about how they look and want to stay fit longer. It’s socially acceptable to have ‘tweaks.’ In the workplace, how you look impacts jobs and promotions. People are living longer and working into their 60s and 70s. They come in and say, ‘I like to look sharp and on my game.’” Popular surgeries and procedure with men involve the eyelids and neck and Botox to reduce wrinkling. “If the eyelids are hooded, people look tired,” Holley said. If the brow has a furrowed look, they seem angry. People judge age by the neck. During the recession, I did eyelids for people who were looking for new jobs. They’d say, ‘I’m competing with guys who look bright and shiny.’ It’s not only about the resume, it’s projection of an image.” Men are also opting for liposuction.

In addition to the home run derby, Van Allen said he and other Mets staff members are coming up with and vetting other promotions for the weekend. “We’re running wild with ideas right now, but nothing is for sure, yet … we’re looking to see what else we can add to make this the best experience possible,” Van Allen said. “St. Lucie County and Tradition Field are right up there with everywhere else, why not show it off?” he said. Tickets will likely be a bit more costly, but the exact cost has not yet been determined. “It’s a special game. I’m sure it will be a little bit more,” Van Allen said.

TRADITION — Engineers will be investigating the cause of the interactive water fountain’s recent failure starting June 7 to determine what needs to be done to get it fixed. Groundwater pressure shifted the underground equipment vault, which houses the machinery that makes the fountain function, said John Gallagher, senior associate at Fishkind & Associates, Inc., the company that manages the Tradition community development district. The machinery in the vault was moved out of place and stopped working, as a result. There are two possible reasons for the excessive groundwater pressure, but Gallagher declined to reveal them, saying the exact cause will be available after crews investigate. “There is potential for a serious repair … one could be very costly, the other, not so much,” he said. Because the cause hasn’t been determined, Gallagher said a

Photo provided by traditionfl.com timetable for the repairs hasn’t been determined. The underlying issue that causes the excessive pressure could be excessive stormwater runoff or an issue with the soil, according to Steven Doyle, Division Manager of Culpepper & Terpening, Inc., one of the engineering firms that will help investigate the problem. “It could be any number of things, though,” Doyle said. “Even if you have the best solution, there’s always going to be these types of problems with stormwater runoff.”

TRADITION — Local baseball fans will get the chance to see some the nation’s top rising stars next year at the 54th Florida State League All Star game June 20, at Tradition Field. The game is part of a threeday weekend that also features a home run derby. The top players from the South Division, including those chosen from the Mets, will face the North Squad. “The level of play is phenomenal,” St. Lucie Mets assistant general manager Traer Van Allen said. Tradition was last home to an FSL All Star game in 2004 and featured would-be MLB all stars Hanley Ramirez, Francisco Liriano, Russell Martin,

Rep. Larry Lee looking for his first re-election

Sidelecki throws hat in the District 84 ring

State House Representative Larry Lee wants his history to do the talking for the upcoming race for the 84th District seat he hopes to retain after the general election. Lee has lived in the Treasure Coast nearly his entire life. He started working when he was 15, picking tomatoes in Fort Pierce. He says his deep-rooted ties to the area help him understand what the people want and need. “I had been asked to run for a public office for over 30 years, and I would always say no. I never had any plans to run for public office. I just felt it wasn’t in my DNA. But, I decided to get off the sidelines,” the former NFL linebacker said. Lee said his first year was a little difficult because he didn’t have the relationships and ties to others in the House or Senate that more senior members had. But, as time went on, Lee says he built those ties and started figuring out the ins and outs. Despite having just one of his sponsored bills pass in his two years in office, Lee says his term was a success and something he hopes to build off of if elected

Robert Siedlecki is looking to unseat Democrat Larry Lee as the District 84 State House Representative in the upcoming general election, touting his experience in working with government agencies. Siedlecki, a former business lawyer who graduated from Harvard, entered the political realm 13 years ago as a way to more effectively make a difference, he says. He says he did some research in the ‘90s to try and pinpoint how to most effectively make positive changes in the community and decided that the best way was to “give working families more tools to work with.” “There was a big uptick in crime and a whole bunch of other problems plaguing America and I thought, ‘What’s the cause?’ And I started reading books and articles, and a lot of it was family breakdown and family issues.” He started working to combat the problems he found in 2001 at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as the children and families administrator until 2005. He later worked at the U.S. Department of Justice Task Force for Faith-Based and Community Services from 2007-09, the Florida Department of Health as chief of staff from 2009-11, the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services as secretary in 2011 and the Florida Department of Children and Families as assistant secretary from 2012-13. Siedlecki currently works as business development consultant working to help his clients expand business, but he wants to get back into politics. “I want to bring effective leadership to the district,” Siedlecki says. Siedlecki says his 12 years of experience working in government that will give him an advantage in getting legislation passed, more so than the incumbent Lee, who didn’t have any of his six sponsored bills pass this legislative session in

Rep. Larry Lee again. “I went to Tallahassee with a dream and vision and that was to be a legislator that could work across party lines for the benefit of the community and the state,” Lee, owner of a State Farm insurance branch in Fort Pierce, says. “I was one of the first Democrats to get a bill passed in the house in my freshman year. Not many freshmen, particularly members of the minority party get anything passed that first year,” he said, referring to an insurance bill that allowed insurance companies to post policies online rather than sending them through the mail to clients.

Robert Siedlecki the House. “I’ve testified in front of a legislature before. I know how the bill process works,” Siedlecki says. “(Lee) is a nice guy, but he’s not being effective in Tallahassee. I would like to bring effective leadership, and I also would like to use my state and federal experience to benefit the people in the district.” There are a few major issues Siedlecki wants to focus on, if elected. First, he wants to fight the proposed All Aboard Florida rail service, which would make 32 trips a day to and from Miami and Orlando and pass through the Treasure Coast. “We’ve gotta look more into it … right now I’m against it. Why have 32 trains going through our district with not a stop here?” he says. “I’m opposed at this point, unless they can show us a better reason to have it. There’s going to be tons of traffic congestion and maybe property values could be affected.” Another popular issue Siedlecki is looking to tackle by securing additional future funding is the Indian River Lagoon. “We need to keep our waters clean. I’d like to be a voice for that in Tallahassee, as well.” Despite his experience, Siedlecki has work to do. He spent much of his childhood living in Fort Lauderdale, but he’s lived in Port St. Lucie for just the past few months, he says. For sheer name recognition, Siedlecki faces an uphill battle. “I plan on running a strong grassroots campaign and meeting as many people as possible,” he says. “This is probably the best place you can be.”

FORECLOSURE from page 1 be pushed quickly through an automated online system, made it harder for banks to prove they had a legal right to foreclose on a property. This created backlog in some places, which is what the law was designed to eliminate. “Companies had to go back and make sure past deals were legal,” Smith said. Smith said the low numbers in St. Lucie County reflect fewer properties being foreclosed on, however, and not indicative of backlog, which Smith said has been decreasing. As of June 10, there were 3,118 properties in foreclosure, down 49.7 percent from the 6,203 cases the same time last year, according to a clerk’s office report. A total of 1,341 properties have been sold so far this year. Smith said the market appears to hitting a turning point and that residents should consider buying again and added that he’s already seen houses going more quickly. “When you go on realtor.com, you’re seeing people buying homes more quickly. I’ve been seeing more homes in the area going faster than they were in the past,” he said. “I think we’ve definitely turned the corner and hope that it continues.”

County property values increased 2.5 percent for 2014, according to figures recently released by St. Lucie County Property Appraiser Ken Pruitt Much of the reduced backlog is due to the sale of a slew of lots in the Villages at Midway, northwest of Midway Road near Interstate 95, being purchased by Walton Acquisitions Florida LLC. Walton Acquisitions purchased much of the land in 2013 for $5 million and has been active again. In May they sold 460 lots to third-party investors, which largely accounted for a county-wide 8 percent spike in deeds filed. “It was an unusual event,” County Clerk Joseph Smith said. “It’s weird, but it’s a good weird.” Smith said no plans have been proposed for development, noting that it may be difficult to reach the investors Walton sold to because many are foreign investors. Smith said it’s likely to be a mix on residential and commercial development. New homes are being developed at a faster rate, too, at an upswing of 18 percent this year. There’s a tremendous area in the southwest area of St. Lucie County that’s growing fast. This is the place to be, and I’ll always encourage people to buy or upgrade their home in the area if they can,” Smith said

File photo Keiser University is currently in negotiations with the city of Port St. Lucie to add the former Digital Domain Studios in Tradition to their locations.

KEISER from page 1

If the council doesn’t allow the sale, this would be the second time Keiser had been denied a vacant site in Port St. Lucie. “We originally wanted a building in the City Center, but the city wasn’t ready for us there,” he said. Keiser said he’s not sure how much the bid was for and calls made to Kennan Development Group, the firm representing Keiser, were not returned as of press time Tuesday. Calls made to city manager Jeff Bremer were not returned, either. The building was appraised last year $13.5 million, and the city has been making $3.45 million annual debt payments. Due to Keiser’s nonprofit status, the school will not have to pay property taxes, but the sale would still knock that number down.

The university will have to upgrade the building extensively, though, Keiser said. “We would have to add classrooms and labs … most of the space is wide open and not exactly designed for a college.” If the offer doesn’t get approved by City Council, Keiser said the university may consider moving to other locations, outside the city. “We’re hoping to stay in Port St. Lucie. We’ve been looking at other spaces, too, not necessarily in Port St. Lucie,” he said. “In the end, it is just another building for us.” Other possible campus locations include sites in Martin County and Fort Pierce, Keiser said. “We’d like to be out west, where the growth is,” he said.

Lee says it’s important that voters don’t get too caught up with how many bills he passed, though. “It’s not just about passing bills. It’s about working on good legislation,” he says. Lee submitted six bills in his second year. None passed, but Lee said he expected it because of the House and Senate being under Republican control. “I knew that going in,” he said. “All of those bills were good bills … they had told us there weren’t going to be many bills passed this year, but I would have been criticized if I didn’t file any.” Instead, he says he focused doing what he could to help the Indian River Lagoon receive funding by backing Sen. Joe Negron’s efforts in the Senate. “My task was to make sure that the Democrats understood the size and scope of this problem we’re having,” he said. Lee says he believes his efforts were instrumental in getting the support Negron needed to have the bill pass both the House and Senate. Moving forward, Lee says he wants to tackle education again by revisiting a literacy bill that failed this past session that would have set up a five-year pilot program to help children, ages 2-3, learn to read, at a cost of about $100,000 per year.

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com The bill passed unanimously in the House, but failed to gain traction in the Senate. Lee said it got caught up with a lot of other bills, which the Senate didn’t even look at. “They just did not allow it to be heard in the Senate. Right now if I had to do it again I wouldn’t file it as a bill. I would just file it as a line item in the budget. And you learn those things,” Lee says. But, Lee says education will be one of his primary focuses, if he serves again, along with seeking increased lagoon funding and opposing the proposed All Aboard Florida rail service. Spending more to try and increase educational opportunities for children is what’s needed to reduce the need to spend so much on rehabilitation and incarceration later in life, Lee says. “I am not going to give up on this. It’s best that we invest on the front side and not the back side,” Lee says. “I want to find ways to end a lot of this violence that’s plaguing our community.” Lee will be running against Rob Siedlecki, a Port St. Lucie resident of three months, in the November election. Lee says he doesn’t want to get wrapped up in a negative campaign but said he thinks it’s important to have a representative who has ties to the community. “All I want to do is lay my record out on the table,” Lee says.

Bad buzz over sober homes continues Brandon Zeris Staff writer

bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE WEST — The fight isn’t over to prevent developers from creating addiction treatment facilities and sober homes in residential areas, despite the city council already approving one — at least that’s what the mayor and congressional candidates looking to unseat Rep. Patrick Murphy said last week. About 50 fed up Torino residents packed into Tutto Fresco Italian Restaurant’s patio June 24 to listen to what Mayor JoAnn Faiella and the candidates had to say. “I’m your voice,” Faiella said to start. “If we need to change laws, then that’s what we’ll do.” Many residents appeared to be initially upset with the mayor and other council members for voting to allow an addiction treatment facility and sober home to made at the intersection of Northwest East Torino Parkway and Northwest Zenith Drive, but Faiella said the council has done all it can. “I wish I could put restrictions

SOBER from page 9 on it, but I can’t,” she said. “Nothing can be done to stop it.” Much of the contention was over advice city attorney Pam Booker gave the council to allow the facilities to be built to avoid a costly lawsuit. The council originally voted against the facilities last year, but, following Booker’s advice, some members changed their minds and approved them with a 3-1 vote with Faiella voting against. Moving forward, District 18 candidate Calvin Turnquest said the only thing to do is amend the Americans with Disabilities Act, which labels those with addictions as disabled and subjects those who deny centers being made to discriminatory lawsuits. “We need to give more control to communities when allowing detox centers. “The state doesn’t have authority to regulate (the act) currently,” Turnquest said, adding that the act should not classify as those with addictions as disabled. “They are not disabled people,” he said.

PORT ST. LUCIE — Pam Booker was unanimously voted in by the city council as the city’s new attorney, but a vocal group made its opposition known at the June 23 council meeting. Armando Rodriguez of Torino addressed the council and pleaded with them to reconsider and make the job search a nationwide search, rather than promoting from within. “Open this up … Not someone who’s worked in the area for 18 years and you feel you need to promote them,” Rodriguez said, who said he was speaking on behalf of other Torino residents who had the same concerns. “If she’s the best qualified (among them), then she’s the best qualified,” he said. Rodriguez and about 200 other Torino residents have been at odds with Booker, stemming from advice Booker gave to the council to allow a detox center to be made at the corner of Northwest Zenith Drive and Torino Parkway. The council voted unanimously in March to allow the center, presumably to avoid a lawsuit filed by Neurogenix Inc. and Another New Life LLC – the center’s developers.

Democrat District 18 candidate Nick Wukoson compared the issue to others hitting the area hard, like concerns over Indian River Lagoon pollution. “We need to come together and find a common sense solution to this,” he said. Faiella and other residents said they support people getting help with their problems but in an area that doesn’t have a school nearby. “We want these people to get help, but it should not be in a residential area but a commercial area,” Faiella said. “People do not want it in their back yards.” Stan Jarusinski said he’s concerned about property values decreasing. “We would like to sue the city, because we lost money,” he said. A lawsuit isn’t imminent but Jarusinski said one could follow in the coming months.

The decision to allow the center followed a previous unanimous vote to not allow it in September. Booker said the lawsuit could have topped $3.2 million. Much of Rodriquez’s concern was over Booker’s salary, which is set to about $185,000 per year with additional perks that bring the total value to about $192,000. The total was decided upon because it was an average of 10 other southern Florida city attorney salaries, Councilwoman Linda Bartz said. Booker’s salary will be most closely resemble that of Fort Lauderdale’s city attorney salary of $193,000. “$192,000? I find that exhorbitant,” Rodriguez said at the meeting. “There’s even a perk for her requesting us to pay for her magazines … I think that’s an exhorbitant thing for us to pay for magazines and other perks knowing how bad our city is financially, and you’re getting a $192,000 salary and you can’t even pay for your own magazines?” That’s not the case, however, Bartz said. “We’re not getting her Good Housekeeping or Cosmopolitan or anything like that,” Bartz said. The city will pay for Booker’s pro-

TREASURE COAST — Republican State Sen. Joe Negron chose to stand alongside some of the most visible and vocal critics of the proposed high-speed railway to make his announcement. “I’ve come to the conclusion that All Aboard Florida is not good for Florida,” he said at a press conference. On Thursday, June 26, Negron spoke at Flagler Place, Stuart. By him as he made his announcement were Sarah Heard, Martin County Commission’s chairwoman, mayors Troy McDonald, Stuart, and Abby Brennan, Tequesta, along with Palm City’s K.C. Traylor, co-founder of Florida Not All Aboard, an ad hoc opposition group that’s gathered about 18,500 petition signatures since February. Negron is the latest Treasure Coast political figure to oppose All Aboard Florida. At a forum the day after Negron’s announcement, all six remaining Republican candidates for the state’s 18th Congressional District were foursquare opposed to All Aboard Florida. The incumbent Congressman, Patrick Murphy, D-Jupiter, has gone from being seemingly moderately supportive to deeply opposed to the proposed rail that would run from Miami to Orlando. Negron cited common points of opposition against All Aboard Florida to explain his. Many of the local objections center around the train bridge traversing the St. Lucie River nestled between the Roosevelt and Old Dixie Highway bridges in Stuart. Boating businesses and groups say that All Aboard Florida’s proposed 32 additional trains a day will effectively close the St. Lucie to navigation and destroy the marine industry on the Treasure Coast. Additionally, many say that those trains would destroy the commercial viability of areas they’d pass through. Among them are downtown Stuart in Martin, along with St. Lucie Village and Fort Pierce in St. Lucie. Tod Mowery, St. Lucie commissioner, said in a telephone interview that no elected official along the train’s route can support All Aboard Florida in good conscience. “The benefit at this point — which is pie in the sky — is outweighed by the negatives,” he said.

St. Lucie County Commissioners earn achievement award ST. LUCIE COUNTY — For the fifth consecutive year, the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners earned recognition from the National Association of Counties’ Achievement Awards program. The Board of County Commissioners earned an Achievement Award in the Environmental Protection and Energy Category for the Extension Office’s Feral Hog Management Program. “Our Extension Office provides dozens of services that benefit the entire county. Most people don’t realize how much the entire community benefits from all that they offer, so it’s always rewarding to hear that their programs are being recognized on a national level,” said St. Lucie County Commission Chair Frannie Hutchinson. “The feral hog problem is something that doesn’t just affect residents in the western part of the county. This is an issue that impacts all

of our residents.” The Feral Hog Management Program was led by Extension agent Ken Gioeli and features multiple aspects including research by Florida Master Naturalist Joanna Huffman and 4-H involvement led by Extension Agent Sue Munyan and the Southern Swines 4-H Club. Additional team members included: Becky Russakis, Edna Vachon, Summer Ivey-Platt and Erick Gill. Representatives from the county’s Extension Office will be making a presentation about this and other award-winning programs at the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners July 1 meeting at 6 p.m. in the Commissioner Chambers of the Roger Poitras Administration Annex, 2300 Virginia Ave. The St. Lucie County Extension Office recently received two other awards from the National Association for Natural Resource Extension Professionals.

an about $1.5 billion Railroad Rehabilitation & Improvement Financing loan from the Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration. If granted, it would be the largest loan of its type ever. Projections are that the project will cost about $2.5 billion. That loan request fuels a lot of opposition. “(All Aboard Florida) was sold as a private project, and in fact is not a private project,” Negron said. There’s apparently little that the Florida Legislature could do to stop All Aboard Florida even if it had a unified will to. It likely wouldn’t, since it’s popular in some areas. The railroad administration is now drafting an Environmental Impact Statement on All Aboard Florida that will likely be published sometime this summer or fall. After it’s published, there’ll be a 75-day comment period that’ll include public hearings in every affected county. After that comment time, a final draft will be written, followed by the railroad administration’s Record of Decision. At the press conference, Heard said she recently met with railroad administration officials who assured her that the loan was a long shot. “They are a very conservative agency,” she said. “(All Aboard Florida) was sold as a private project, and in fact is not a private project,” Senator Joe Negron ries, Michael Booth, public affairs specialist at the railroad administration, said he couldn’t speak to All Aboard Florida’s loan request specifically. “The Department has always encouraged private sector investment in infrastructure projects and believes the private sector has a critical role to play in developing our nation’s transportation network,” he said. “At the Federal Railroad Administration, we welcome any opportunity to work with private investors who are willing to self-finance or partial finance rail projects.” The 32nd State Senate District includes parts of eastern Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach counties. There’s an election for the seat this year. Negron is running for re-election. The Florida Division of Elections lists three other candidates for the seat: Republican Brandon Cannon is running for the seat, along with Democrat Bruno Moore and write-in candidate Matthew Loew. All Aboard Florida hasn’t responded to Your Voice News & Views request for a response to Negron’s announcement.

Bartz said she had some concerns about an early draft of the contract, in which Booker played a large role in drafting, that were remedied prior to the final version being approved. She said the draft had a car allowance, but that was struck down and removed. “We haven’t been doing that for 10 years,” Bartz said. “It didn’t seem appropriate to me.” Booker was sworn in after the meeting.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — United Way of St. Lucie County needs volunteers for the annual “Stuff the Bus” event. All St. Lucie County WalMarts will have buses to stuff with new school supplies on July 19 from 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Volunteers are needed to assist with collecting the school supplies. Adults and children of all ages can volunteer in three-hour shifts. This is an excellent opportunity for high school students to fulfill their community service requirements for graduation. The volunteers stationed at the WalMart stores will collect supplies purchased by customers who are shopping on that Friday. The community is extremely generous with their donations to this project. St. Lucie County is known for coming together and helping people, especially children, said Cris Adams, vice

president of Community Impact for United Way, and committee chair for this project. Since 2008, the Stuff the Bus event has raised more than 53,000 school supply items ranging from pens and pencils to backpacks. All supplies go directly to the children in St. Lucie County Schools and the cash donations are used to purchase additional supplies. School supplies are distributed by individual St. Lucie County schools based on need. The student must qualify for free lunch and be recommended by their school to receive the backpacks and supplies. “Over 4,400 St. Lucie County students received the essential supplies to be successful in school last year,” Adams said. “However, over 16,000 children meet the basic qualifications and are in need.” School supplies are being collected throughout the month of July and can be dropped off

at any St. Lucie County Seacoast National Bank, PNC or at the United Way office located at 4800 South U.S. Highway 1 in Fort Pierce. To sign up for “stuff the Bus” shifts, call the United Way at (772) 464-5300. “It is through the collective efforts of our community partners and volunteers that we are able to provide these most basic tools to our youth,” Adams said. “We are fortunate to live in a community that invests so much time, effort and love into the future of these children.” Additional volunteers will be needed Saturday, July 26, Wednesday, July 30, and Saturday, Aug. 2 from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. for sorting and packing at Forest Grove Middle School. For more information on the “Stuff the Bus’ event please call (772) 464-5300 or visit our website, www.unitedwayslc.org and Facebook page www.facebook. com/unitedwayslc.

St. Lucie County Permitting Office offers online renewal for contractor licenses FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE COUNTY— Builders and contractors can now use St. Lucie County’s website to renew their licenses and verifications, as well as pay for re-inspections in St. Lucie County. Additionally state certified contractors can update their licenses every other year, instead of annually. Effective Monday, June 9, the county’s Code Division launched the new online renewal process in an effort to provide easier access and better customer service. The online renewal for local contractors and payment of re-inspections is a voluntary service option for all customers. “These service improvements will provide convenience to all and more importantly save time,”

said St. Lucie County Building & Code Regulation manager Monica Graziani. In the near future, the county is planning to roll out additional enhancements such as 1) an updated permit application to simplify the form and reduce pages, 2) an online building permit that can be filled out online and printed and 3) the hiring of a building inspector as needed. The online renewals and re-inspections are available on St. Lucie County’s website at: ·Renewals - http://codeinspectionpublic.stlucieco.gov/Contractor_License_Renewal.aspx ·Re-Inspections - http://codeinspectionpublic.stlucieco.gov/ For additional information, contact the St. Lucie County Code Division at (772) 462-1571.

SLC’s media staff earns award for speech writing FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — For the eighth consecutive year, St. Lucie County’s Media Relations staff earned recognition from the National Association of County Information Officers’ Annual Awards of Excellence program. The St. Lucie County Office of Media Relations won an Excellent Award (second place) in the speech writing category. More than 330 entries were submitted in nine different categories, which included video, publications, electronic communications, social media, special projects and others. St. Lucie County was one three Florida counties to receive an award in the national competition, along with Broward and Palm Beach. “The awards competition continually showcases the best communications and public relations projects from public information professionals throughout the

country,” said the association’s president, Todd McGee, the public relations director for the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners. “I know the judges had a difficult time in selecting the winners, and that is a testament to the great work that is being done to help citizens better understand what county governments do.” The awards will be presented July 13 during the National Association of County Information Officers’ annual awards reception, held during the National Association of Counties Annual Conference in New Orleans. The National Association of County Information Officers was formed in 1966 with the goal to bring together communications professionals who wanted to share information with other counties across the United States. TREASURE COAST — Radio news and sports personality Tom Teter died on Monday, June 30, at Martin Medical Center, Stuart. He was 61. Teter was the news director at WSTU 1490 AM and WPSL 1590 AM. Additionally, he owned www. tcnewsfl.com. Greg Wyatt, co-owner of both stations, said many will mourn Teter for a long time. “Tommy had an amazing sense of humor and real quick wit,” Wyatt said. “A real quick wit.” Barry Grant Marsh, owner of BGM Creative, co-hosted “The Breakfast Show” with Teter for two decades. “He was always positive,” Marsh said. “He was the type of person you couldn’t help but like. He’s got a tremendous following in this area. He’s going to be a heartfelt loss for a lot of people.” Marsh said Teter was working as a disk jockey at WSTU when he went to work there in 1981. Teter

transitioned to the newsroom and sports. “He was the newsman’s newsman,” Marsh said. “He really got it. You could always count on him.” Teter had a political science degree from Ball State University, Muncie, Ind. He grew up and graduated high school in La Porte, Ind. He listed his religion as Roman Catholic on his Facebook page. He described himself as a Jeffersonian Reaganite. Additionally, he described himself as, “A wild & crasz kinda geezer.” Mike Thomas co-hosted a morning show on WSTU with Teter until his death. “Tom is very easy going,” Thomas said. “He wanted to have fun doing the news. He was able to sit there and joke around and have fun and put on that news hat like it was nothing.” Thomas said for all his jovialness, Teter felt a strong duty to reporting facts right. “He took the news very, very seriously,” Thomas said. “He felt it was very important.”

Torrey Pines’ VP new CareerSource chairwoman Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TRADITION — Pamela Houghton, Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies’ vice president of administration & outreach, is the new chairwoman at CareerSource Research Coast. It’s the latest honor for Houghton, who said she got a heavy dose of the value of giving to the community from her youngest ages. “I was raised in a family that was involved in community involvement,” Houghton said in a telephone interview after the announcement. Houghton’s husband, Richard Houghton, founded the not-forprofit human-health research organization in California. That was in the late 1980s. It relocated some of its operations to a 107,000-square-foot facility in the Tradition Center for Innovation in 2007. Torrey Pines employs about 120 at that facility. “We were courted by different communities,” Hougton said. “We fell in love with the Research

Cost. We fell in love with the people here.” Houghton said she quickly got involved with CareerSource, which at the time was known as Workforce Solutions of the Treasure Coast. The state has 24 regional workforce-development organizations under what used to be Workforce Florida, the state’s workforce-development program under the Department of Economic Opportunity. Until 2011, it was the Agency for Workforce Innovation. Each of the 24 is an independent agency, and all used different names. The Florida Legislature enacted a bill in 2012 to unify them to a common name. After a bunch of branding research was done, the state settled on renaming Workforce Florida to CareerSource Florida. Each of the 24 now has “CareerSource” in its name. Houghton said she’s focused a lot of her time and energy on youth-employment programs, and intends to continue that as the chairwoman. “I started as a board member and served on the youth council,”

Pamela Houghton she said. “That was about six years ago.” Houghton added, “I have a passion for young people.” She’s been the vice chairwoman for the last two years. St. Lucie West builder Don Santos is now vice chairman.

“I am proud of the opportunities that St. Lucie County has given me as an attorney, litigator and as a volunteer. I feel this is the next step to giving back to St. Lucie County and doing my part to ensure the integrity and independence of our judiciary.”

Today is the 10th anniversary of the line-of-duty death of St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Vasko, according to Sheriff Mascara Ten years ago today, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Vasko became the first and only Sheriff’s Office K-9 to lose his life in the line of duty, according to Sheriff Ken J. Mascara. “K-9 Vasko, a German Shepherd, and his partner, Deputy Mike Colton, were pursuing a car thief and kidnapper the night of June 24,” Mascara said. “The suspect fled on foot, with Deputy Colton and Vasko in pursuit. “The suspect turned and fired several gunshots in their direction. Despite being hit in the face by gunshots, K-9 Vasko caught his assailant, clamped onto his leg and wouldn’t release him until commanded to do so by Deputy Colton,” Mascara said. The suspect raised his gun in Deputy Colton’s direction, and

he returned fire, wounding the suspect. It was Vasko’s 91st apprehension. The profound loss of blood Vasko suffered brought his life to an end the next morning despite the determined all-night medical care Vasko received from a team of veterinary specialists. He was 5 years old when he died. His funeral took place at the St. Lucie County Civic Center, which since has been torn down. More than 700 people attended the funeral, including law officers from around the state and 80 K-9 teams. Mascara concluded his eulogy with these words: “Of course, Vasko’s heart will never stop. It beats within every person whose life Vasko touched. It beats within each police service dog. And it beats within each of us.” Mascara posthumously awarded Vasko the Sheriff’s Office Medal of Honor and Life Saving Award.

PORT ST. LUCIE – If you don’t have plans yet for the Fourth of July, two local events will provide families with the opportunity to eat. Celebrate, enjoy fireworks, weather permitting and yes, remember that day in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was signed. Freedomfest has been taking place in Port St. Lucie for more than 20 years. This year, the family-friendly celebration will take place from 2 -10 p.m. at Martin Health System Village Square, the public plaza in front of the Civic Center. The fun begins at 2 p.m. with live bands, food and refreshments, games and activities for kids and families, arts and crafts, vendors and more. Admission and parking are free. If the summer weather cooperates, fireworks will light up the sky at 9 p.m. Freedomfest will also offer a VIP Party, featuring a buffet that includes pulled pork, chicken, hot dogs and all of the fixings. The event, in the Emerald Ballroom at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center, starts at 6:30 p.m. It costs $25 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. The ballroom provides

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — With the ongoing increase in efforts to effectively address mental health in communities across the country, United Way of St. Lucie County and the FamilyWize Community Service Partnership have teamed together to provide a solution for the community. Local residents have saved $709,914 on mental health prescription medications they might not have been able to afford otherwise, thanks to a partnership between the two organizations. More than one in five U.S. adults suffers from mental health issues, while one in 10 young adults experience a period of significant depression, according to MentalHealth.gov. One in 20 Americans lives with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or major depression. As part of last month’s recog-

nition of National Mental Health Awareness Month, President Obama issued a proclamation addressing the growing issue of mental illness in the nation. “Over the course of a year, one in five adults will experience a mental illness, yet less than half will receive treatment. Because this is unacceptable, my Administration is fighting to make mental health care more accessible than ever,” Obama’s proclamation read, in part. FamilyWize, a unique national grassroots community initiative offering free prescription assistance to millions of Americans in partnership with United Way of St. Lucie County, is dedicated to reducing the cost of prescription medicine for individuals and families through distribution of free prescription savings cards. The FamilyWize cards may be used by anyone in need and are provided

UNITED from page 34 free through United Way of St. Lucie County. FamilyWize and the United Way have helped nearly 7 million people nationwide save close to $700 million on the medicines they need to live healthy lives – including $197 million in mental health prescription cost savings. Almost 1,000 United Ways distribute the cards in the communities they serve. “Prescription medicine is crucial for maintaining mental health, but the high costs often act as a barrier,” said Cris Adams, Vice President of Community Impact, United Way of St. Lucie County. “We’re living in tight economic times. People should not have to choose between taking their medication and paying for a meal. The FamilyWize prescription savings program can make the difference in whether or not a patient obtains the proper medicine and follows proper treatment.” Many of the uninsured and underinsured individuals helped by this program may have had to skip their medications otherwise due to high costs, Adams said. Failure to take prescribed medicine is an ongoing problem with mental illness treatment. Non-adherence to antipsychotics is likely the single-biggest factor “contributing to psychotic relapse and hospitalization,” according to

YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • ST. LUCIE WEST/TRADITION • JULY 4, 2014 • 35 a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. And the average rate of non-adherence is about 50 percent, according to the Journal of Clinical Psycopharmacology. “Mental health is a key component in overall health and wellbeing, and we’re happy to see some many people able to get the help they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford, said Susan Gilmore, FamilyWize’s Executive Director of Community Engagements.” As the only prescription assistance service of its kind to pass through 100 percent of its savings directly to its members, FamilyWize brings together millions of uninsured and underinsured individuals and families into one umbrella-buying group to negotiate these discounts. The average discount is 40 percent and is sometimes as much as 75 percent or more — similar to what pharmacies give the largest insurance companies and employers. Since 2005, FamilyWize has helped nearly seven million people get medicine they otherwise could not afford, which accounts for close to $700 million in direct savings on prescriptions. The FamilyWize-United Way Card requires no enrollment or activation. Consumers give the card to their pharmacists every time a prescription is needed and discounts are automatically applied. The FamilyWize card is

accepted at more than 60,000 pharmacies nationwide, including CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Kmart, Target and Walmart. For more information, or to download a free prescription card or compare the discounted price of prescriptions at nearby pharmacies visit www. FamilyWize.org. United Way is a worldwide movement of nearly 1,800 community-based United Ways in 41 countries and territories. It advances the common good by focusing on education, income and health — the building blocks for a good quality life. The United Way movement mobilizes millions to action – to give, advocate and volunteer – to improve conditions in their local community. For more information about United Way, please visit www.UnitedWay.org. The FamilyWize Community Service Partnership was established in 2005 to help all people get the medicine they need. Today, more than 80,000 community agencies, thousands of United Ways and the America’s Promise Alliance Partners coordinate local distribution of the free FamilyWize prescription drug discount card, which lowers the cost of medicine as much as 75 percent or more. The free FamilyWizecards have helped 7 million people save almost $700 million. For more information, visit familyWize.org/about-us.
