PORT ST. LUCIE — The city council received hundreds of complaints from concerned citizens who were worried their property taxes were going to be raised. After the council’s July 25 retreat, many thought a raise was inevitable because the council set a just-in-case rate of $8.37 for every $1,000 of assessed value. But, the council unanimously voted Monday to keep property taxes the same for the upcoming fiscal year, although the final vote is set for Sept. 22. If the final vote goes through as planned, the rate will stay at $5.62 for every $1,000 of assessed value. The change of plans was brought on by resident complaints, council members said at their budget workshop Sept. 5. “Our community is not ready for this,” said Councilwoman

TREASURE COAST — Wayne Teegardin, St. Lucie County’s veterans services manager, will
head to Tallahassee on Wednesday, Sept. 17, for a meeting that could hold a chest of gold for Tradition and the Treasure Coast. “We’re going to go to the Cabinet aides meeting,” he said. “Af-
ter that, we’ll know if we’re on the agenda for the (Sept. 23) Cabinet meeting.” The Treasure Coast was poised in August to welcome news that the state’s eighth veterans home would be built in Tradition. Word was that the Florida Cabinet would hear and most likely approve the site-selection committee’s recommendation
