Central’s rout Incumbents dominate race Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — It looks like much of the same is on the way as not a single area incumbent was eliminated from contention, following the Aug. 22 primary. Both incumbent St. Lucie County Court judges fared well. Phil Yacucci retained his seat over Stephen Smith by getting 58.6 percent of the vote. Katheryn Nelson will have to wait a little longer if she’s going to get her seat back. She was unable to get a 50 percent majority, falling just shy at 48.8 percent. She’ll be in a runoff with Al Moore in the No-
vember general election. Moore took 21.6 percent of the vote. Both county school board members retained their seats, easily beating their opponents. Chariman Debbie Hawley got 64 percent of the vote, and Donna Mills got 58.3 percent

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Florida’s tourism numbers have been increasing at a record rate, according to recent data. Gov. Rick Scott announced Aug. 19 that about 24 million people visited the state from April to June this year, a 3
percent increase over last year’s numbers. The announcement was based on projections by VISIT FLORIDA, the state’s nonprofit tourism marketing partner. Scott said the state invested $74 million into VISIT FLORIDA and hopes it will help reach a goal of getting 100 million people to visit Florida in 2014. The

Mutter’s Hearing Center, Inc. “I got what I paid for.... both times!” “I remember the days when I couldn’t hear the phone ring, my grand kids laughing or carry on a conversation with my husband. I had to finally admit to myself, it was time to get a hearing aid. It was a long battle. I’ve been to countless hearing aid stores over the past 4 decades from Buffalo to Miami. They would stick something in my ear that looked ugly and worked even worse. It was like having a plug in my ear but I guess that is what you get for a few hundred dollars. Then I met Joe Mutter and the war was over. Joe is a Hearing Aid SPECIALIST, sent to me by God. I love the look, it’s light weight, thin and feels just like a normal ear. I think about all of the money I wasted on these other hearing aids and it just breaks my heart. I am so lucky I found Joe and finally got what I paid for” Marianna Law / SLW

Physician practice opens St. Lucie office Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

PORT ST. LUCIE — The standard of care available to patients of Treasure Coast Urgent & Primary Care in Stuart is now available to residents of St. Lucie County. Michele Libman, M.D., the practice founder, and Rob Gluckman, Esq., practice manager, have opened a suite of offices on Hillmoor Drive. “We purchased four office suites and rebuilt it the way we wanted it for maximum patient flow and comfort,” Gluckman said. “It’s like a home. We had so many patients tell us St. Lucie was in need of a higher level of medical care. “The reality is that there are so many people in St. Lucie that medical care has turned into 10-minute office visits. We believe in talking to patients and addressing their concerns. Our visits are 20-40 minutes. We’re getting back to the old days of care where you

Yacucci wants Smith off the Florida Bar Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — St. Lucie County Court Judge Phil Yacucci is happy to end the Group 2 race with a win, but he’s not quite done with his opponent, Stephen Smith. “We are taking action. The Florida Bar is receiving complaints based on what was done by him and his supporters during the race. I want him removed from the Bar,” Yacucci said.
Voters gave Yacucci 58.6 percent of the vote, and Smith got 41.4 percent. It was infuriating to see someone running for a judge seat conduct himself as Smith did, Yacucci said. “There were things in this race that should never occur in a judicial race,” Yacucci said. The two have been at odds for some time. In March, Yacucci found Smith to be in contempt of court for lying during a DUI trial. Yacucci sentenced Smith to five days in jail, but Smith is appeal-

ing Yacucci’s decision. In July, Yacucci sued Smith and Citizens for Judicial Fairness for defamation from a website that contained a series of articles about incidents during a custody battle following Yacucci’s divorce in 1989. Citizens for Judicial Fairness ran the site, but Yacucci said the group supported Smith. Smith said he had no part of the site but noted that it made some good points. A judge granted a temporary injunction to take the site down, but an appeals court later overturned the decision. “These were cowards hiding behind the first amendment. You see child pornographers do that stuff,” Yacucci said. The two had a heated exchange Aug. 22 at the Port St. Lucie Community Center during early voting. Yacucci said he told Smith to stay away from his family because Smith had apparently been talking about his wife. Smith said the altercation was physical. “He’s the one who put his hands on me,” Smith said. Smith said he thinks he ran a clean race and has no regrets about the campaign. “Mine was a positive campaign, but, for my opponent, it was not. I think it angered him that someone was challenging his seat,” Smith said. “I’m disappointed in the results. I did not win, however, I think the results show that a large percentage of the community thinks there needs to be a change in that seat. “I know my opponent tried to link the website to me, but the fact remains that I had nothing to do with it.” Smith said he’s going to remain in St. Lucie County, serving his clients at The Ticket Clinic along Port St. Lucie Boulevard. He doesn’t have any plans right away to run again. Smith won’t have any cases in front of Yacucci for some time

Stephen Smith following the election, per the Florida Bar rules. “I won’t be handling his cases for one to two years. Someone else will have to put up with him,” Yacucci said. Smith said there’s no bad blood on his end. “I wish my opponent all the best and am hopeful that his demeanor on the bench will be appropriate,” Smith said. Yacucci doesn’t want Smith’s actions to go unnoticed. “You can’t assassinate someone’s character and say you wish him well. This isn’t over,” Yacucci said.

Perception is reality in life and the workplace P YOUR VIEW
erception is the way we think about or understand someone or something. It can perhaps be best defined by the way you notice or understand something using your senses. The process begins with an object in the real world which stimulates one of the sensory organs and is transformed by the brain into a mental representation or understanding. The human nervous system and the sensory system - which include vision, hearing, smell touch and taste - are all at work and transmitted to the brain for our own individual interpretation. Pretty complicated stuff as far as I am concerned-but nonethe-less important to all of us as we pass through our daily lives, whether it’s personal or business. On a more practical note, the perceptions that others have of you are based on the messages that you send, and those perceptions will play a vital role in the relationships that you have with others. Dr. William Glasser wrote that “perception is reality.” This is true in all walks of life, especially in business. If my perceptions of you are that you are an idiot, then how am I going to treat you? Like an idiot. If my perception of you is that you are dishonest, then I will not trust you and not likely to want to do business with you. The distrust-

His ideas - which focus on personal choice, personal responsibility and personal transformation, are considered controversial by mainstream psychiatrists, who focus instead on classifying psychiatric syndromes, as “illnesses”, and who often prescribe psychotropic medications to treat mental disorders. Glasser was also notable for applying his theories to broader social issues, such as education, management and marriage, to name a few. Wait a minute, this is supposed

to be a business column and not a medical column so let me try and get back to the point of my thesis. It’s simply this. You can create and manage the perception that others have of you, and you can manage direction and outcome of the relationship. What messages are you sending to your employees and your customers? What perceptions are you creating in their mind? The way you look, the way you act and the way you speak are all contributors to how others size you up. I still remember my early days at IBM and the unwritten policy that required me to wear a suit, striped tie and a white shirt. And don’t let me forget the winged tip thirteen pound shoes. It was all about the perception building process and the perception that my customers had about me, which of course mirrored the company’s beliefs. IBM’s core beliefs have set a standard of conduct and business ethics since its early years. It has created a perception of excellence and doing a job in a superior manner. And it was required that each and every employee conduct themselves in a manner consistent to those high standards. The reality of their success cannot be disputed. Body language plays a big part of the perception others have of you. When was the last time you crossed your arms when someone disagreed with your point of view? This clearly is a sign that you were not listening or unwilling to listen or understand the opposing point of view. How well do think the crossed arms serve in your ability to establish an open dialogue? Perception is indeed reality. You have the ability to create an image that others will admire and respect. This image is how others perceive you and will directly impact your success in that relationship. As a real estate professional, I am always cognizant of how others view me. I know that if I follow through with a promise, I will be viewed as someone who is dependable. If I follow up with a thank-you note or email, they will perceive me being considerate. If I am always on time and

Oravec the early favorite over Faiella in PSL mayoral race Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PORT ST. LUCIE — Greg Oravec led the way in the primary election, securing 44.7 percent of the vote, and he looks to be the early favorite in the general election. Incumbent mayor JoAnn Faiella followed up second with about 23.1 percent of the vote. Because no candidate got more than 50 percent, Oravec and Faiella will go against each other in November’s general election. Oravec called the primary a huge success that showed him that residents want change. “Seventy-seven percent of voters voted for a new mayor, and, come November, that’s what we want to give them,” he said. Whether those who voted for Joe Edge, Chauncelor Howell, Jim Rich or Rocky Tinto stick by their decision to choose a new mayor over Faiella will be criti-
cal. Oravec said he’s going to focus on the issues to defeat Faiella. “We believe in running a positive campaign and focusing on the issues the community is most concerned about. “We want to reduce the debt. We want to take on leadership. We should be leading the way with our system of government and leading the way along the Treasure Coast and saving our rivers and giving the people a government to be proud of,” Oravec said. Oravec, the city’s former city manager during the failed Digital Domain deal, said he surpasses Faiella in ability, experience and professionalism. “If you compare our backgrounds and leadership roles and our levels of success in those, you’ll see I’m more qualified.” Faiella was unable to be reached, as of Sept 2 for comment.

Bus route expansion likely on the way with Tradition set as a high priority STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The County Commission approved a 10-year public transportation plan Aug. 12 that calls for additional routes in St. Lucie West and Tradition. The expansion depends on future funding levels, but the Tradition changes are high priority, said St. Lucie County Transit coordinator Corine Williams. “Now, it’s not going to happen overnight. It’s going to take time, should funding be approved,” she said. That holds true for all the changes, Williams said. The 10year plan is more of a best-case scenario guideline; nothing is set in stone. “It is anticipated that this growth will lead to an increase in population and employment opportunities. This increase in conjunction with the need for alternative transportation options for the aging population will result in higher demand for transit
services,” she said. Transit staff talked to about 1,000 residents about what was needed to improve the service. One of the major things was increasing route frequency, the report shows. Over half of the non-bus riding people the transit staff talked to said they would rather see routes go to highly populated or visited areas, rather than going to more places, in general. One of those places will likely be Tradition, as the population there continues to increase. “This is critical as suburban development within the county continues to burgeon, making a high level of transit service more and more difficult to provide. For the 10-year plan, new routes are identified to serve key growth areas and other areas known to generate significant numbers of service requests, including Lakewood Park, Midway Road and Tradition,” the report says. There are also plans to add routes connecting to neighboring counties and to extend hours, which would help local business-

shelters being built at stops and Wi-Fi onboard, according to the plan.

Low voter turnout following a downward trend Brandon Zeris STAFF WRITER
bzeris@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PORT ST. LUCIE — Despite a high-profile mayoral race, voter turnout for the primary election was a dismal 19.46 percent. St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections Gertrude Walker said that it wasn’t a huge surprise. “Since the 2002 gubernatorial, we’ve seen it go down from 29 to 19 percent,” Walker said. Traditionally, people tend to vote more in presidential election years.” Walker said she predicted the turnout to be between 20 and 25 percent. There was a low turnout, but Walker said the election had gone smoothly and that no problems were reported. “I was anticipating a little more, but I tend to be a bit more optimistic.” Based on mayoral race results, more people in the St. Lucie West-area precincts voted than most other areas. Precinct 86, which is bordered by Southwest Country Club Drive, St. Lucie West Boulevard, Crosstown Parkway and Interstate 95, was the top with 27.2 percent of eligible, registered voters cast-
ing ballots — 687 total. The Torino area, precinct 85, had the next highest rate of 24.6 percent — 2,442 total. In precinct 91, north of Glades Cutoff Road and West of Torino, just two of 114 registered voters voted. “I’m always disappointed when the voters don’t always get out to elect the best leaders,” Walker said. “It’s our responsibility as citizens to get out there.”
ELECTIONS from page 1 in her District 3 race. Port St. Lucie’s District 1 Council race ended with Linda Bartz holding the title over challenger John Dimola. She beat him with 60.7 percent of the vote. The city’s District 3 Councilwoman Shannon Martin finished second in her race to James Taylor. Martin got about 40.1 percent, and Taylor got 41.8 percent of the vote. They were separated by just 334 votes. There were 19,281 votes cast in the race. They’ll square off in the general election. The mayor’s race will be decided in November, too. Mayor JoAnn Faiella did the worst among incumbents, getting 23.1 percent of votes, and popular challenger Greg Oravec got 44.7 percent. Joe Negron easily beat his opponent, Brandon Cannon, securing 83.6 percent of the vote. The District 18 U.S. Representative race will be settled in November, too, with Democrat Patrick Murphy going against challenger, Rep. Carl Domino, who got 37.5 percent of the vote in the primary.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The UF/ IFAS St. Lucie County Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Southern Swines 2014 Feral Hog Challenge is scheduled for Sept. 12-13 at the St. Lucie County Fairgrounds in Fort Pierce. Hunters interested in participating in this challenge can register their teams by Thursday, Sept. 11. Information about this event, including rules and awards, can be found online at http://stlucie.ifas.ufl.edu. Feral hogs are now found in every county in Florida and in at least 35 states and Canadian provinces. Southeast Florida’s feral hog population is second only to Texas and is estimated to have more than 500,000 wild hogs in a relatively stable population, with 1 million to 2 million in the Southeastern U.S. Feral hogs can cause damage by rubbing or tusking small trees and by root-
ing up native vegetation. Unfortunately, feral hogs are difficult to manage. Females can become reproductive within a year of birth and produce two litters of piglets per year averaging five to seven piglets per litter. his rapid reproduction, along with a lack of predators, adaptability and intelligence makes these feral hogs difficult to manage. This program will encourage feral hog hunters to compete for top prizes while removing invasive feral hogs from the environment. Program: 2014 4-H Southern Swines Feral Hog Challenge Dates: Teams must register by Thursday, Sept. 11 Event takes place Sept. 12-13 Location: Weigh-in will be conducted at the St. Lucie County Fairgrounds Registration: Contact Becky Russakis at (772) 370-2434.

TOURISM from page 1 record number was 93.7 million last year. That brought in $76.1 billion in tourist spending and $4.6 billion in tax revenue for the state. “Florida tourism is maintaining strong momentum with all indicators up across the board for the quarter,” said Will Seccombe, president of VISIT FLORIDA. “With occupancy, rooms sold, average daily room rate and tourism and recreation, taxable sales all continuing to climb, we are well on our way to making Florida the No. 1 travel destination in the world.” The highest percentage of domestic visitors in 2013 came from Georgia at 11.9 percent. New York, Texas and Alabama followed at 9.7, 5.9 and 5.6 percent respectively.

While her plans may have changed, the city’s debt payment schedule hasn’t. The annual combined bill is about $1.75 million. The next payment is due in January, Bremer said. “It’s frustrating. We’d like to have something set up to hear about her project,” Bremer said. In a time when the city is paying so much for failed projects, it would be nice to have something come through. The people could use some good news, Lily. Will September work? Brandon Zeris is a staff writer for Your Voice News & Views.
Internationally, the most visitors came from Canada, Brazil and the United Kingdom at 3.7 million, 1.8 million and 1.5 million. Terissa Aronson, executive director, St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce, said tourism is vital to St. Lucie County. “We put record numbers down. It’s an even bigger endeavor now than ever,” she said. “It’s one of the fastest-growing sectors in the county.” “It’s not just baseball anymore, it’s horseback riding where you can go to the beach and ride horses. It’s one of the only areas in the country where you can do that. It’s kayaks, and our St. Lucie County fairgrounds brings in a lot of events. There’s equestrian events, team-building outings for corporations. There’s a lot you can do there,” she said.

ugust has come and gone without a word from Lily Zhong, the Chinese developer who owns Port St. Lucie’s City Center. She promised us the moon — or at least a new downtown. At the current pace, I’m not sure I’d expect a rock. Zhong was adamant in June that she’d be back in the country in August to present city staff with a definitive proposal for the center at the corner of U.S. 1 and Walton Road. Zhong’s public relations representative, Sam Yates, hasn’t had anything to update in the past month. She’s tried to tie the people over by giving them a list of ideas she had for the center. An international trading center, you say? Sounds great. A new hotel and an apartment complex? Wonderful. About 2,650 jobs with average salary of about $38,000? Well, we like jobs, and the pay seems fine. She sent 3-D models of this new central hub in July. They showed people walking about the place, which had a nice fountain, a pool and new yellow buildings. When the models were released, city manager Jeff Bremer was skeptical, but now he’s a bit more optimistic, saying the city’s legal team is trying to talk to Zhong about setting up a meeting. “In the past, it has taken a number of calls to reach her,” Bremer said. “People’s plans change.”

ST. LUCIE WEST — Kerry Pepple doesn’t know the man’s name, where he came from or what his religious or political beliefs were. What Pepple remembers is his face as the man died in his arms. Pepple can’t remember the exact day. It’s shrouded in a fog of protracted fighting. What he remembers is a platoon being separated from others when enemy fighters overran their position. As he tells the story, Pepple’s breathing goes shallow. His voice drops to monotone. His eyes visibly go out of focus. To the onlooker’s eyes he seems calm, bored even. But something about his aura sounds unmistakable shrieks of pain underneath all that seeming stillness. “When we found them, they were all dead, except for one
man,” Pepple said. “It was a terrible scene. The (pejorative term for Vietnamese communists) took their clothes, their weapons. There was one guy alive. He had a sucking chest wound.” Pepple, a squad leader, took it upon himself to help the wounded man. “I stayed with that man. I held him in my arms,” he said. “I watched him pass away.” This isn’t a movie. French horns don’t fade in and overtake the other sounds as the camera pans out. A man died. The other’s heart kept beating, but something in him died, too. “I blamed myself for his death,” Pepple flatly said. Before getting drafted in the late ‘60s, Pepple, now 66, married the girl he was dating in high school. She watched her young husband head to war. Pepple said what she greeted home wasn›t him. “When I got home, I was a different person,” he said. “I don’t
know if I realized that I was a different person.” Fortunately for Pepple, he was married to a supportive, forgiving woman who loved him. She tolerated his newfound drinking and excessive flirtatiousness. She tolerated his emotional withdrawal at home. She tolerated them from when he got back in 1969 until 1991. She tolerated them from a man who wouldn’t talk to her about Vietnam. Pepple also had many tolerant and supportive people in his life keeping him from falling through social cracks. Because of that, he managed to keep a job at Massey Ferguson for 15 years and another at Jeep for 25. “I’d get drunk, I’d go home and set my alarm clock,” Pepple said. “My shift started at 6 (a.m.). I’d get a call at 8 (a.m.) asking if I was coming in.” He frequently took days off, and

PTSD from page 16 got verbally confrontational with coworkers. But he did good work. After all, work was one place he found some relief from mental wounds that weren’t healing. Pepple had a short marriage in the mid-‘90s. It lasted eight months. Then he married Annette in 2000 and has been with her since. Like many Vietnam veterans, Pepple retired and moved to Port St. Lucie. According to the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs, nearly a third of the Sunshine’s State’s 1.6 million veterans are Vietnam-era. And like many of them, Pepple started experiencing the health problems that come with age and hard living, diabetes in his case. That got him heading to the Department of Veterans Affairs Community-Based Outpatient Clinic in Stuart. Annette was with him when he was given a routine screening for post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD. “They asked me if I had PTSD, and I said, ‘No,’” Pepple said. “My wife was sitting next to me shaking her head.” “I was in denial. I never realized I had PTSD. It took my third wife to bring it to my attention.” After the realization Pepplead-

PTSD from page 20 Gamble said that the pair used cognitive processing therapy. At the heart of the therapy is going to “stuck points,” those painful moments that a person is trying to avoid thinking about, and examining them to understand and challenge beliefs that emerged from them. For example, Pepple blamed his lack of medical knowledge for the fellow infantryman’s death. Gamble had Pepple face the memory and recall all the details. As he did, it became apparent that the soldier had suffered an irreparable deathblow before Pepple arrived. The only thing Pepple could have done was comfort the dying man. That’s exactly what he did, and he now takes some comfort from that realization. “I had to relive it, and it was a hard thing to do,” Pepple said. “It’s hard to think about. It brings out your beliefs. It’s hard to talk about.” PTSD is not exclusive to combat veterans, but they’re one of the highest risk groups to develop it. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, people are wired to detect danger and react to it with the ‘fight or flight’ survival response.
Urgent & Family Care
“I had to relive it, and it was a hard thing to do. It’s hard to think about. It brings out your beliefs. It’s hard to talk about.” Kerry Pepple PTSD, essentially, is when a person remains in the alert fight state long after danger has passed to the point that it’s negatively affecting his or her daily life. The institute reports that an estimated 7.7 million American adults have PTSD. Gamble said that the VA PTSD clinic in St. Lucie West has two counselors, including himself, and two psychiatrists who prescribe and monitor medications when they’re needed. The center is in the process of hiring two more counselors, and is specifically seeking to hire a woman veteran. Some seeking counseling prefer same-gender therapists. He said about 65 percent of the patients are Vietnam-era veterans. About 25 to 30 percent of the patients are younger; they mostly served in operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. There’s also a handful of World War II and Korean War veterans
who are just now seeking help for symptoms that go back sometimes seven decades. Veterans can’t just walk in and get services at the PTSD outpatient program. Gamble said admission into the program starts with doctors checking for medical conditions with symptoms similar to PTSD, such as traumatic brain injury. Combat veterans who suspect they have PTSD should report their symptoms to any VA medical professional. Those experiencing acute symptoms, such as sudden relentless nightmares, should either immediately go to VA medical centers, or call the Veterans Crisis Line, (800) 2738255, Ext. 1. Veterans can also contact the Crisis Line by texting 838255. Friends and family members can call the Veterans Crisis Line if they’re concerned about a veteran. If there seems to be immediate danger, call 911.

Hospice program helps pediatric patients Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

TREASURE COAST — For the parent of a child with a life-limiting illness, worry is a constant companion. The diagnosis brings medical bills, unanswered questions, stress on family relations
and a host of other problems. Now, the Little Treasures program at Treasure Coast Hospice is there to help families in Martin and St. Lucie counties. Unlike hospice for adults, where aggressive treatment has ended, young patients are able to continue to receive treatment while receiving hospice services,
Patrice Austin, pediatric program manager, said that this is a recent change. “The patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 introduced concurrent care for children. This entitled children to be enrolled in hospice care while still receiving aggressive and curative treatments. The children
of Florida began to experience the benefits of concurrent care in approximately 2013, as it rolled out in the state.” Little Treasures is an umbrella for two programs, pediatric hospice care and Partners in Care: Together for Kids. The first is

PEDIATRIC from page 24 pediatric hospice care for children who meet hospice’s criteria of life-limited illnesses. The second provides palliative care for those with chronic or life-limiting conditions who are already receiving medical services through the Children’s Medical Services Network. “It’s important for pediatricians and parents to know that when a family is faced with the reality of a child’s being ill, that they don’t feel that choosing hospice puts a limit on continuing care,” Austin said. “Not many hospices have a pediatric program.” The program involves a specialized pediatric team. “The family is surrounded with support,” Austin said. “There’s comfort and pain management and assistance with navigating resources on behalf of the child. There are linkages to other services. “There is psychosocial and emotional support from a child life specialist who is a professional who works with children and families to deal with the impact of the illness. There are nurses, a chaplain, music therapist, a pediatrician and pediatric social worker connected to our team. Everything we do, we do with the whole family. We go in for the child, but we serve the whole family.”
Patrice Austin Children in the Little Treasures or Partners in Care program remain at home. “What is beautiful is that the family continues its normal experience,” Austin said. “The child has the sounds and smells of home, smelling mommy’s cooking, joking. They see life happening. They have their pets. It’s important to a family. They can love their child and gain a team to assist them with the parts that are difficult or unknown. They’re able to help them know, understand and cope with every step.” Jackie and Jed Brownie’s daughter, Kammie, 7 has a progressive neurological disorder and receives services from hospice. The youngster was born 12 weeks early and has always been in a wheelchair, but for five years, she was stable and even able to

Behind on your tax filings? We can help! A new client received a proposed change to their Individual Income Tax return stating that they owed the IRS $20,378 in tax, penalty and interest. After retaining us, we found that the client had prepared their own tax return incorrectly. We sent a letter to the IRS with an explanation of the corrections. This resolved the matter resulting in the client owing the IRS nothing! Another new client received a proposed change to their Individual Income Tax stating they owed the IRS $10,078 in tax, penalty and interest. In this case the client had received a corrected notice of earnings from the Social Security Administration. The IRS was trying to tax the client for the original notice and the corrected notice. After retaining us, we identified the error resulting in the client owing nothing! A third new client received a notice from the IRS regarding the $166,000 in tax, penalty and interest which he legitimately owed on his 2008 Individual Income Tax. This resulted in the IRS placing a levy on the clients bank accounts. After retaining us, we were able to have the levy released and put his account in a “currently uncollectable” status so he was no longer receiving the harassing collection letters from the IRS.

attend school. Two years ago, her condition deteriorated. “When we were at Miami Children’s Hospital, there had been a severe progression, and her neurologist recommended she be placed in hospice,” Jackie Brownie said. “It was surreal. It took a while for it to sink in. The word ‘hospice’ meant ‘elderly people.’ Kids don’t go into hospice. It was a hard hit, but it was an amazing process. We went home at 6 a.m., and, by 9 a.m., two people from administration were there, and 45 minutes later, a nurse came. “Before hospice, getting equipment that Kammy needed took weeks and multiple phone calls. Before, we had to fight for a nurse. It all had to do with our finances. Now through Little Treasures, we have a wonderful nurse. Two years ago, we’d be in the hospital three or four times a month. Now, the pediatrician comes, if needed. They are able to use dosages of medications to stabilize her. It keeps her at home, where she is safer, because her immune system is compromised.” The music therapist has also been a blessing, Brownie said. “I’ll never forget the day she came. “She’d done research on (Kammy’s condition) and created a CD. It’s not just someone who
comes. She has real purpose and love.” The chaplain comes to the house twice a month. “She’s been helpful,” Brownie said. “Our beliefs were tried. We’ve had a scary summer. The social worker/counselor comes once a week and we’re very thankful. It’s a hard situation on a marriage. The nurse can come and stay on a Saturday or Sunday evening so my husband and I can get out. At one point, I couldn’t leave the house, and I called and said I had to go to the grocery store. Soon there was a volunteer at the house. “The first time making the call is the hardest. There’s so much support, it’s unbelievable. I don’t know what we ‘d do without them.” For Austin, the work is so rewarding. “The families are very appreciative. They are grateful for the help. They feel it’s made a difference and impacted the outcome. They’ve felt supported, informed and empowered and feel like they’re not alone. End-of-life care is very scary. They don’t have to figure it out by themselves. We make a difference.”

September brings special events to community Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

FORT PIERCE — It’s hard to know if special events in September are the last blasts of summer or the beginning of the busy season. Whatever the definition, there are two events this month that are ideal for families. On Sept. 13, the first Sandi Paws Pet & people Walk-a-Thon Pet Parade will take place from 3-7 p.m. at Marina Square in downtown Fort Pierce. The event, sponsored by Gina’s Bake Shop, will honor the armed forces, firefights and law enforcement officers and remember those who were injured or lost their lives on Sept. 11. Activities include vendors and a live radio broadcast, a doggie fashion show, K-9 demonstrations, live music and an ROTC drill squad and events for kids, including a bounce house, face painting and prizes. A portion of the proceeds from the event benefit military kids by helping to send them to Camp
Corral, a free camp for the children of wounded, disabled and fallen service members and the Adopt-a-Pet programs of humane societies. Gina Dean, who is a Fort Pierce dentist and organizer of the event, has sold dog and pet treats at the Farmer’s Market for several years. She is a supporter of pet adoptions and ending euthanasia of animals that are not adopted. She decided to hold the event around Sept. 11 for a specific reason. “One of the victims of Flight 93, (flight attendant CeeCee RossLyles) was from Fort Pierce,” she said. The second event, the Indian River Lagoon Science Festival, brings science out of the lab and into the community. The inaugural event, on Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Museum Point Park on South Hutchinson Island, is a free event that shows that science, while serious business, is also fun. Exhibitors will have hands-on activities and

The St. Lucie Education Foundation has initiated a fundraising campaign that will raise thousands of dollars for schools through the sale of coupon books filled with over one hundred local and national vendors. The Coupons for Classrooms Campaign kicks off on Sept. 10. Books will be sold in all St. Lucie County Public Schools through its students, administrators, and parent-teacher organizations. Each book costs $20, with the first pages filled with $20 worth of coupons each to Winn Dixie and Fresh Market. Additionally, the book will have coupons from restaurants, recreation, retail, and service businesses from all over the St. Lucie County and the Treasure Coast. Money raised by individual schools may be used for their
EVENTS from page 31 demonstrations exploring different areas of science, including agriculture, health science, entomology, ecology, marine science and more. Linda Diederick is the festival’s co-chairwoman. She represents the Smithsonian Marine Station. “We hope the Indian River Lagoon Science festival broadens people’s minds about what science is,” she said. “Science is all around us, all the time, and everyone can be a scientist.” The festival will feature several highlights: Explosive chemistry stage shows by Miracle of Science at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. A special appearance of the Treasure Coast Wildlife Center, with live animals, at noon. Free admission to the St. Lucie County Aquarium and St. Lucie County Regional History Center Live musical performances by Sweet Chariot throughout the day Food trucks from area vendors Free parking at the event site and free shuttles from downtown Fort Pierce. The festival is actually the culmination of science-focused
school improvement plans geared towards increasing student success. “There are always programs we wish we could fund or that require additional resources. I am extremely excited for the opportunity to provide our students with expanded programs that continue to enhance the learning environment,” said Allaptattah Flats K-8 Principal Patti Galloway. Apart from the sales by schools, any proceeds from the Foundation or its partners’ sales will continue to benefit the students and teachers through teacher grants and student scholarships. To help ensure the success of this campaign, the Foundation has created an incentives program to motivate book sales. Students will be eligible for drawings for 16GB iPad Minis, $50 Visa Gift Cards, and the grand prize of a 16GB iPad Air.
events in St. Lucie, Martin and Indian River counties in the days leading up to the festival. More information is available on the festival website. Cristin Ryan, the event’s other co-chairwoman, of the Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems exhibit, said that the Treasure Coast is a great place for science. “The Treasure Coast is incredibly fortunate to have such a diversity of science and technology resources. The Indian River Lagoon Science Festival and pre-festival events are a fantastic way for the community to learn about the wealth of opportunities in our own backyard.” While the festival is supported by grants and donations, festival planners are still seeking additional sponsors. For more information about the Sandi Paws Pet & People Walk-a Thon Pet Parade, call (772) 9710001 or (772) 595-1888. For more information about sponsorships for the Indian River Lagoon Science Festival, call Laura Diederick at (772) 462-6216. Information about pre-festival events will be available at the website, www.irlsciencefest.org.
In addition to increasing school resources, the Coupons for Classrooms Campaign has an economic stimulus of $8.6 million to St. Lucie County. For more information about Coupons for Classrooms, please contact the St. Lucie County Education Foundation at (772) 429-5505. Established in 1990 as a nonprofit organization, the St. Lucie County Education Foundation was organized to provide direct support to the students and teachers through programs not supported by tax revenue. The foundation advances K-12 public education in St. Lucie County public schools by increasing the capacity and resources of the district through grants, student scholarships, facilitating project funding, and classroom adoptions.
