ST. LUCIE WEST — For a brief time, a group of 9-year-olds from Port St. Lucie were rated No. 1 in the country. Team Easton, a travel baseball team, came in first at the Winter Championships in Altamonte Springs in December and was ranked No. 1 by the United State Specialty Sports Association. The ranking was brief because the team was “kicked upstairs” into the premier division after the victory. In that division, their ranking was lower. Being No. 1 was a special moment for the players and coaches of a team that was started only a year ago by Tony Germano. Germano grew up in Port St. Lucie, played varsity football for Fort Pierce Central High School and received a baseball scholarship to Hillsborough College. He owns Greener Planet Lawncare in Port St. Lucie. Travel baseball takes the best of the local players for a travel team that plays in tournaments the

The newly formed, 12-member team competed in the LC’s Sideline Championships, held in early December in Port St. Lucie, placing a strong second place. Fifteen teams from five Palm Beach and Treasure Coast high schools competed. But the honors for the St. Lucie West squad didn’t end there. PORT ST. LUCIE — Defense lawyers for suspended Port St. Lucie City Councilman Ron Bowen filed documents last week asking the courts to dismiss the case. The motion will require a hearing, which has yet to be scheduled. “We feel the conduct and the statements made by Mr. Bowen to the state attorney are entirely lawful and Ron Bowen not something to bring about criminal charges,” Bowen’s Stuart attorney, Richard Kibbey, said. “He has a freedom to talk to the city attorney about any subject. We feel we will prevail on our motion to dismiss the charges.” A seconds-long status hearing

How is 2014 going to sound for you? “Don’t go another year W ? h h at? u H with communication & hearing problems!” Say Again... Life is too short to waste any of it not being able to hear clearly. Those moments with your family and friends need to be cherished and enjoyed, not a source of frustration and irritation because you can’t hear or understand very well.
Call to set up a FREE Clinical Hearing Evaluation Today. Richard did.... My doctor sent me to Joe for my hearing loss. At first I was a little concerned because I have heard so many negative things about hearing aids and I was not all that excited about my visit to Mutter’s Hearing Center. Nonetheless I went to see Joe, from the moment I walked in the door I was made to feel at home by Tammy who met me and walked me through some very simple paperwork I had to fill out. Joe did a very complete hearing test and I decided to get hearing aids from him. After Joe explained my options I decided to get myself good hearing aids. It was after that, when I found out that the people that had gotten hearing aids somewhere else were fooled by the come on ads and bought the cheap hearing aids that were the ones that they complained about how they didn’t work and just made things louder. Joe spent quite a bit of time with me to help me understand my hearing loss and I love my new hearing aids that I got Richard Hallett from Joe. I cannot thank my doctor enough for sending me to Joe! FORT PIERCE — After 43 years in business, Bill Shultz Chevrolet in Fort Pierce will receive a new name and new owners, but will still have many familiar faces in the showroom and the same dedication to serving its community. PGA Village politician battles budget red tape for local kids Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer State Rep. Larry Lee Jr. looks over the shoulder of Boys & Girls Club member Rashaun Ray, 17, before presenting a check to the organization that will benefits clubs across the state for a shared total of over $9 million dollars.
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Thanks in part to the tireless efforts of State Rep. Larry Lee Jr., D-Port St. Lucie, who is also a PGA Village resident, hundreds of thousands of children across the state will have a chance at a bright future. Many of those children are located right here in St. Lucie County. Gov. Rick Scott recently approved $9 million in the state budget for the Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Florida. Lee, a member of the Education Appropriations Subcommittee, pushed for the funding within his 13-member committee. Lee presented the Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County with a symbolic check for $9 million on Dec. 19. The club will learn in late January just how much of the $9 million will be designated for St. Lucie County. It’s estimated more than $200,000 will go to St. Lucie County. The millions go directly to Florida Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs, which will disburse the funds later this month. All of the Boys & Girls Clubs in Florida are members of the alliance which represents over 237 clubs from Pensacola to
Key West that served more than 135,000 youth last year. They have over 14,000 board members, adult staff and program volunteers that assist with after school care, summer programs, assistance with homework, reading, computer work, delinquency prevention and mentoring programs. Boys & Girls Clubs are the place where young people are provided with the tools and guidance to achieve academic success, become community leaders and lead healthy lifestyles, a St. Lucie Club representative said in an email. Lee stressed the importance of the clubs throughout the Treasure Coast. “It’s very important, because if you look at all the recent shootings and violence … ,” Lee said. “We have to support organizations like the Boys & Girls Club, not only at a state level, but at a local level.” Lee promised he’ll crusade on this year to assure funding for the organization isn’t slashed. “We’ve got to make sure we fight to keep it in the budget,” Lee said. “In this upcoming session, I’ll be taking a lead to make sure that funding isn’t decreased.” Boys & Girls Club board president Stephanie Morgan said the money will be

What will you do in 2014? “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that enough good men do nothing.” I’ve heard this quote all my life, but apparently, according to a quick web search, it’s not clear that the most-attributed-to “author,” 18th-century Irish statesman and philosopher Edmund Burke, ever said or wrote it. It matters not in this context; the meaning of the quote is what’s important, not where it originated. That quote’s been on my mind recently because, during this “slow news” holiday period, I’ve been watching episode after episode of ABC’s “What Would You Do?” on CNN. (Hey, I prefer reruns of that show to repeats on the riveting lives of British royal family. Really? There’s so little going on in the U.S. that we have to reach “across the pond” for our broadcast news?) The philosophy behind “What Would You Do?” epitomizes the above “triumph of evil” quote, emphasizing the last part, “… that enough good men do nothing.” In the show, actors are involved in scenarios in which they engage in socially unacceptable behavior
CLUB from page A4 spent on the club’s life and health skills program. “A lot of it has to do with prevention of smoking, drugs and alcohol and making wise decisions,”
that they play out in a public setting, and cameras are rolling, capturing scenes of unsuspecting members of the public who either look the other way, or step up to “right” a “wrong.” This particular evening, the episodes I watched involved a man very vocally hitting on his son’s girlfriend in a busy bar/ restaurant; another man loudly protesting over his breakfast that he was physically ill after learning his female server used to be a man; and an obnoxious New York City nightclub doorman refusing to allow entrance to a young woman whom he deemed
too “unmodel-like” to be part of the dance floor crowd, even to the point of asking her to step on a scale to prove she was weight-appropriate. It always amazes me that there’s a tiny minority in any given group who have the courage to speak up when they observe the mistreatment of another human being. We’re talking social settings here, where a modicum of civility would make a world of difference in the outcomes of similar situations as I just listed. But I applaud and commend the handful of individuals who are willing to, and DO, intervene when someone is obviously being bullied, instead of looking the other way and adopting an “it’s none of my business” attitude. Those who step up to “right a wrong” are true heroes in my book, just as much as is a firefighter running into a burning building to save a life. Do the afore-mentioned scenarios rise to the level of “evil?” I think so. You don’t have to cold-heartedly murder someone and dismember the body to fall into the “evil” category. Maliciously hurting another person (which means you have intent to harm),
physically or emotionally, is also evil. I’m a mother, so I feel somewhat qualified to speak up on this topic. I raised my son to embrace the ideals of honor and integrity, and he embodies them – I see and feel it in every conversation I have with him, and in observation of how he moves through this world. As we enter this new year of 2014, I encourage you to make a resolution to do the same. You don’t have to be caught on camera on a national TV show to “do the right thing,” or, as my publisher would say, to make the right choice. From being polite to other drivers in traffic, to speaking up when a parent is yelling at his child in the grocery store, resolve to improve the human condition by stepping up when remaining silent would allow “evil” to perpetuate. You may not always be successful in your efforts, but at least you will be able to look yourself in the eye in the mirror the next morning, and know that you have done your part to make a difference in the world. And you know what? You just might. Tammy Raits is managing editor of Your Voice News & Views.
Morgan said. “We want to get them early … They’re our future.” Morgan also expressed her gratitude to Lee and the rest of the committee for fighting the good fight. “We were so thrilled that they

BASEBALL from page A1 year round. Wayne Cimperman’s son Wes, a third-grader at Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition, plays shortstop for Team Easton. “They practice three-four times a week, every week throughout the year,” Wayne Cimperman said. “The skill level is unbelievable. The kids know how to turn a double play. It’s really quite remarkable. The coaches have a huge knowledge of baseball. They were pro or college coaches and the instruction is above and beyond.” Cimperman said that travel baseball takes a tremendous commitment in time and finances. Participation can easily reach $10,000 a year per player. There are fees to join, dues, money for equipment and, of course, money for travel, including hotels and meals. Fields have to be rented and umpires paid. Cimperman said that when the team is not practicing or playing, they are standing in front of grocery stores, trying to raise funds. Sponsors are very welcome, but the kids are learning that what they love to do costs money and effort beyond the playing field. They also learn that sometimes tournaments have to be canceled because parents don’t have the

league baseball player and owner of Bravo Supermarkets in Port St. Lucie stepped in and bought each player a bat. The kids will be able to compete. For Wayne Cimperman, his son’s love of the game is the reason he is playing. “I’m a football guy,” he said. “My son played tackle football and baseball at the same time. He was playing every day except Sunday. I thought football was No. 1, but he said that he really loved baseball and wanted to focus on it.” While Cimperman is proud of his son and all the kids, he’s not sure that specializing at such a young age is the best thing. He remembers when there was a season for football, basketball and baseball. He thinks that something is lost when kids concentrate on one sport so early. “In my opinion, playing more
sports makes you a better, well-rounded athlete,” he said. One thing he does like about any sports participation is the hard work, the learning to take instruction and the focus. “It’s just like in the classroom,” he said. “The coaches are the teachers.” Cimperman said that even at this level, most parents are realistic about goals. “The highest hope, the best thing they could strive for, is to be on a high school team or go to college and play on a team,” he said. “Most parents don’t think (their kids} will be in the NFL or major leagues.” For now, Team Easton’s 9-yearolds are just happy to have won a championship. There aren’t many kids that age who can make the claim.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Representative Patrick E. Murphy cosponsored bipartisan legislation to eliminate any cuts to military retiree cost-of-living-adjustments (COLAs) included in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013. This bill was introduced by Congressman Jeff Miller R-Florida, chairman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. There are approximately 65,000 veterans in Florida’s 18th Congressional District. “I supported the recent bipartisan budget deal as a positive first

step towards much needed compromise in Congress that provides stability for American families and businesses. However, like any compromise, there were things included that I don’t agree with. The reduction of pension benefits for some future military retirees gives me the most concern,” said Rep. Murphy. “That is why I am proud to support Chairman Miller’s bill to restore earned earned benefits for the brave men and women who serve our nation. I hope this common sense solution receives the same bipartisan support as the budget deal to make sure our service members receive the benefits they deserve.”

rino said. That award was an effortless snag for the determined first-year team. “That demonstrates good sportsmanship and leadership,” said Meltzer, who also heads Leader Cheer in Port St. Lucie. “They would cheer other teams on and wish them good luck.” In its five months in existence, the squad has shown exemplary work ethic out of the stage spotlight, Meltzer said. “I’ve seen the leadership in those girls grow in the past few months,” Meltzer said. “I coach a lot of cheer teams and took over as head coach because of their initiative. I’ve never seen that in a cheer team.” The team was established and organized by the charter school girls, themselves. “We were determined to start a squad because we wanted to have more opportunities for girls at our school to play sports,” said 10th-grade student, Samantha Bisbano, 16. Bisbano, who has six years of cheerleading under her belt, was the sole girl with such experience. The rest learned the tricks of the trade and were competition ready in a few short weeks thanks to the team’s unique ability to communicate and look after one another, one team member said.
“I absolutely love it … all of us girls have grown so close together,” said 10th-grade student Brianna Zirger, 16. Each week, the girls organize their own practices, arrange for transportation, raise funds for uniforms and other supplies and even participate in weekend parades around the Treasure Coast. Both Samantha and Brianna, who founded the team, said establishing the team also taught them a huge lesson in responsibility. “So much work went into it. We were planning every single week and every single day to get money, supplies and coaching,” Samantha said. “I learned a lot of responsibility, having to keep phone numbers and papers together and having to remember every single detail.” The school’s Principal Erika Rains said she couldn’t be more proud of her girls. “I think it’s exciting. It is a great example of what these kids can do when given the freedom and the opportunity,” Rains said. Although there’s more work to be done to prepare for a potential completion in mid-January, the girls are proud of their recent accomplishments. “It’s amazing to see how it started with just two of us and now we have 12,” Brianna said. “More girls want to see us succeed and go further than we already have.”

The exterior walls have been erected and the roof trusses are on site and ready for installation. The new road leading to the building has been cut in and will be paved soon, sales manager John Falkenhagen said in the release. The new building will house Lang Realty, Lang Management, a mortgage and title company and an insurance company. Lang’s current office on Reserve Boulevard is located in a new home center which was poorly laid out, inefficient and costly to operate and maintain, Falkenhagen said. “Our new state-of-the-art office will bring the latest technology and improved office functionality to allow Lang Realty to continue to provide the level of service and expertise to our clients in PGA Village as well as throughout St. Lucie County,” he said. “We’re not sure (how many),” he said. “We’re always hiring.” For the past 22 years, Lang Realty has offered its services to South Florida residents. It boasts 12 offices in Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties, with more than 350 agents who provide personal, individualized service to clients buying or selling properties throughout Palm Beach, Broward counties and the Treasure Coast, according to www.langrealty.com. Lang’s website currently has 2,685 listings up for the Treasure Coast. Those listings include lots and homes for sale. Lang also offers commercial real estate, property insurance, mortgage and financing, titles and escrow services and a relocation division. Lang’s website also gives a great pitch on why people should settle in Port St. Lucie. “Port St. Lucie’s cultural arts community offers an array of choices from Broadway productions and nationally known performers to classical music and civic theatre productions,” the site states. “Museums and galleries along the Treasure Coast are also plentiful. With a love for celebration and the arts, this county loves to celebrate and offers weekly festivals and fun for the whole family.”

BOWEN from page A1 on the morning of Dec. 26 continued the case until early February. Bowen waived his right to be present at the brief hearing. The motion to dismiss the charges was filed later that day. Should the motion for dismissal be denied, Kibbey expects a jury trial in late February or early March. Bowen was charged on Nov. 25 with a second-degree misdemeanor for attending a meeting of the council on Feb. 2 through an intermediary, city attorney Roger Orr, during which two or more members of the council took official action about offering then city manager Greg Oravec a severance package. Bowen faces up to 60 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $500. The District 4 councilman was suspended by Gov. Rick Scott on Nov. 27 in the wake of allegations by the state attorney’s office that he broke Florida’s open meetings laws, known as Sunshine Laws. The indefinite suspension forbids Bowen from performing any official act or function of public office. He also lost his annual pay of $30,035. A special election to fill the suspended councilman’s chair has been scheduled and is estimated to cost taxpayers a pretty penny. During its last meeting of the year on Dec. 9, the council voted to move forward with an election set for Feb. 25 to fill the District 4 seat of Bowen, who was elected into office last year. The election is estimated to cost $125,000. The St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections Office needs a $50,000 deposit as soon as possible to make election preparations, said the city’s senior assistant attorney, Pam Booker. City charter requires the municipality to hold a special election if there are more than six months
City charter requires the municipality to hold a special election if there are more than six months remaining on an unexpired term or more than six months before the next regular election. remaining on an unexpired term or more than six months before the next regular election. The special election must happen between 30 to 90 days after a vacancy or suspension. Bowen’s council term expires in November 2016. Should Bowen be cleared in the courts before the election is held, he can reclaim his seat. If he’s cleared after the election, he can also reclaim his seat, Booker said. Two other council members were also charged in connection with Oravec’s release. Mayor JoAnn Faiella was charged with two civil infractions. The first for deleting text messages and a second for communicating through Orr, documents state. Faiella said during a public meeting she plans to fight the charges and has hired a personal attorney. Faiella is expected to appear before a judge sometime next month. Councilwoman Shannon Martin was charged with a civil infraction for destroying text messages. Each infraction carries a fine of up to $500 each. Martin admitted her wrongs and paid a $250 fine for her infraction. Vice Mayor Linda Bartz and Councilwoman Michelle Berger were not charged with any wrongdoing.

File photo St. Lucie County Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky and Congressman Patrick Murphy take the hand offs of bags of oyster shells from James Oppenborn, St. Lucie County Coastal Resources Supervisor at Pepper Park along the Indian River Lagoon last July. TREASURE COAST — “So, how would you fix Congress?” the Representative asked. By flipping Congress, I told him. By convincing all the Democrats and Republicans living in safe districts to vote for the other party to fill Congress with Democrats in Republican seats and Republicans in Democratic seats. Murphy laughed. “I love it,” he said. Congressman Patrick Erin Murphy is an oddity, which he said makes him feel at home in the 18th District. He knows that he’ll have to work hard to convince voters to keep him in the seat if he runs in 2014. Good, he said. The Democrat fills the state’s 18th District, a place not tailored for being blue. Or really for being
a Republican either. “It’s helped me through this partisanship in the Congress,” Murphy said. Murphy said that being a Democrat in a shaky seat has made him listen to ideas and opinions no matter where they came from. “When you’re in a seat like this, it’s a constant reminder to do that, no matter who you are,” the Congressman said. The recently reminted district embraces St. Lucie and Martin counties, along with a sliver of Palm Beach County’s northeastern side tossed in. Between St. Lucie and Martin, there are 106,473 registered Republican voters. Democrats claim 101,896 registrants. Another 63,198 voters registered in minor parties, or without affiliation. Far more than enough to scratch off the

power of party loyalty found in other districts. The youngest member of Congress, 30, was born in the roaring Reagan years, which he embraced by joining the Republican Party. Murphy swapped party affiliation weeks before announcing his first congressional run in 2012. Fewer than 2,500 votes separated his opponent, Allen West, and him in an election with more than 331,000 voters. Murphy took the oath of office on Jan. 3, 2013. This last year in Congress has been marked by unusually tense relations in a highly divided government. Those tensions culminated in the 16-day partial federal government blackout, Oct. 1 to 16. Murphy joined with other Florida representatives in approving legislation that would have selectively funded the Department of Veterans Affairs, and other government functions, during the shutdown. That bill, which had other provisions, also had to pass the Senate and get President Barack Obama’s signature to be law. Democratic leadership in the Senate refused to consider individual spending bills such as that one from the House of Representatives, insisting instead for a complete continuing resolution or budget to keep the federal government fully operational. “The frustrating part is the dysfunction in Washington,” Murphy said. “The partisanship and gridlock.” He added, “Seeing that first-hand is very disappointing. The government shutdown is the epitome of what’s wrong with Washington.” Nevertheless, even as the government was blacked out, Murphy hosted congressional briefings about the environmental and business damage inflicted by the infamous Army Corps
of Engineers’ large releases of nutrient-rich waters from Lake Okeechobee into the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee waterways. Those releases adversely affected the entire Indian River system. More than 20 members of Congress — Republicans and Democrats — attended the briefings to hear from expert and community witnesses. That, Murphy said, was his — and other members of Congress’ — greatest accomplishment this last year. He said it was good to see and hear Republicans and Democrats unite in concerns about Florida’s waterways even as they remained deeply divided over federal budget issues. “I’m doing everything I can to change the tone in Washington,” Murphy said. This coming year, he hopes to get legislation passed that’ll speed federal efforts to reduce the need for future Okeechobee watergate openings. Also on the Democrat’s to-do list is working out solutions to the unforeseen, and sometimes ignored, issues the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act creates as more of its provisions kick in. “I would like to see something happen to improve the Affordable Care Act,” the congressman said. “There’re a lot of common sense tweaks that need to be done.” Also high among the congressman’s New Year’s resolutions is reducing the infamous backlog of VA claims. To do that, Murphy is working closely with Florida Republican Congressman Jeff Miller. The VA’s annual Performance and Accountability Report, released in December, gave many hope that the claims backlog is heading into the history books. It reports that about 418,000 veterans’ claims await decisions for 125 or more days. That’s about half as many as in previous years.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — St. Lucie County Sheriff’s deputies are looking for the Grinch who tried to steal Christmas from a 9-yearold River Park girl in unincorporated St. Lucie County. The Grinch, identity unknown, stole Kylee Stevens’ brand new bike, which she received as a Christmas present, from the front porch of her home, at 105 Beach Ave., in the unincorporated River Park neighborhood, on Christmas
Day, Sheriff Ken J. Mascara said. “When I read the incident report, I was appalled that someone would victimize a little girl on Christmas morning,” Sheriff Mascara said. “When I shared the story with my command staff, we agreed that there was only one solution: We had to reach out to Santa to get the bike replaced.” This morning, Sheriff Mascara, filling in for Santa, gave Kylee a brand-new bicycle. The Grinch, foiled in his pathetic attempt to ruin a little girl’s Christmas, remains at large.

workers and vehicle detailers, both said. The Vero Beach couple has kept the Bill Shultz staff and plans to make new memories with them, which was a key selling point for the Shultz family. “When we came to town, we had a young staff. We watched everybody grow up and have their kids and grow with the community,” Jeff Shultz said of his beloved staff. Brothers Bill and Jeff Shultz said a major reason for selling the family dealership was losing their brother, Ron Shultz, a PGA Village resident, to congestive heart failure in May of last year. Ron Shultz was remembered by all who knew him as an honest man who put his faith, family and employees at his car dealership before himself. Bill and Jeff Shultz also want to spend more time with their aging father and the dealership’s founder, Bill Shultz Sr., 86. “We both want to sit back and enjoy life with our parents and family,” the younger Bill Shultz said. “Life is too short, losing a brother.” In a parting message to the community they served and supported through regular charitable donations, the brothers expressed a simple, yet heartfelt “thank you.” “Thank you for all the support in the community. We’re going to miss them,” Jeff Shultz said. “It’s definitely been 43 great years,” Bill Shultz added.

“I love the business and the people. Every day is different and exciting,” Will Dyer said. “The Dyer Difference is a more personal approach to business. We build relationships with customers, not transactions. We try to do things with a personal touch.” Every month since establishing Chevy in Vero in June 2008, the Dyer family gives out the Dyer Difference Award to a deserving nonprofit organization in the Vero Beach area. The award comes with a $3,000 donation to help further the cause. Past recipients include, the March of Dimes, Habitat for Humanity, Children’s Home Society and the Vietnam Veterans of America. The tradition will now continue in St. Lucie County as of Dec. 16, 2013, when the deal was completed. “We’re supported by our community and we work for our community as well,” Tatiana Dyer said. “It’s really important to serve the community.” The expansion south into St. Lucie County makes the Dyers the largest seller of Chevrolets from West Palm Beach to Daytona Beach with more than 360 new and 100 used Chevrolets in stock and ready to sell, the couple said. “If a customer is looking for something and we don’t have it on one lot, we’ll have it on another,” Tatiana Dyer said. Renovations on the historic property are set to begin this spring and end in the fall, the Dyers said. “It’s going to be a totally modern dealership,” Will Dyer said. The dealership is also looking to add more jobs in the coming months for a variety of positions from sales associates and technicians to ground maintenance

Curtain rises on the fall of Saigon at Riverside Theatre “It’s a heart-wrenching story. There’s no way not to have your heart breaking while watching it unfold.
Shelley Koppel Staff writer
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
VERO BEACH — As the Riverside Theatre celebrates its 40th anniversary season, last season is being celebrated, as well. The theater has been nominated for 25 Broadway World.com awards, Florida edition, for last seasons’ productions. Broadway World.com highlights shows on and off-Broadway and in professional theaters around the country. Riverside Theatre performers and directors received nominations in all nine categories. Theater patrons have voted for their favorite performer, production or director online. Results will be announced in January. Riverside Theatre’s next production is “Miss Saigon,” which will run from Jan. 14-Feb.2 The musical, from the Riverside creators of “Les Miserables,” ran for more than 4,000 performances on Broadway. It is the 12th-longest running Broadway musical. “Miss Saigon” is an epic musical with dramatic sets. Based on Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly,” it tells the story of an American
Dana Costello soldier and a Vietnamese girl who fall in love and are separated by the fall of Saigon during the Vietnam War. Dana Costello plays Ellen in the production. The young performer has appeared in many regional productions and made her Broadway debut in “Jekyll & Hyde.” The actress said that “Miss Saigon” is a wonderful show for cast and audience. “I think the music is beautiful,” she said. “It’s a great score. The story is wonderful. I think it’s wonderful when a musical is based on history. The characters are so well-written that you feel for them. It’s hard to choose who’s right and wrong, which is a good thing.” Costello said that while the sets and scope of the show are epic, the show, itself, is personal. “It’s a heart-wrenching story,” she said. “There’s no way not to have your heart breaking while watching it unfold. The music is
big and what it’s about is deep. It’s a really good show. I think everyone will love it, but bring your tissues.” Costello grew up in New Jersey and California and attended the Pacific Conservatory for the Performing Arts. She moved to New York City to fulfill her dream of appearing on Broadway. “I wanted to do Broadway, and the first time I got on stage in New York was the greatest moment of my life,” she said. Now she is looking forward to leaving a cold New York for Florida in January. She said that she has heard good things about the Riverside, but only knows one other cast member. “I know one girl from classes in New York,” she said. “That’s the great thing. It’s a whole new family of friends. Everyone gets friendly fast and you stay that way for the rest of your lives.” “Miss Saigon” will be presented
Dana Costello at the Riverside Theatre’s Stark Stage, 3250 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach, from Jan. 14-Feb. 2. Performances are Tuesday-Thursday at 7:30 p.m.; opening night, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.; and matinees on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $45-$70. FORT PIERCE — Nothing beats dining outside at Rinelli’s Yellow Tail in springtime. Situated on the Second Street corner in historic Downtown Fort Pierce,
the restaurant offers great food, unbeatable prices and a refreshing breeze from the nearby Indian River. The scenery and the eatery’s expansive menu is quite impressive. Lunch appetizers range from roasted Portobello to Caribbean long squid and dinner range from New York sirloin to seafood
ravioli. “We’re just different. We’re a little bit of Italian and a little bit of seafood,” manager Nikki Lyke said. Server Cassie Dunajewski said she’s never tried anything on the menu that disappoints.

YELLOWTAIL from page B5 “Our menu is great for all types of people,” Dunajewski said. “For seafood, the tomatillo ahi tuna is awesome. It’s pan seared tuna, so if you like sushi kind of fish, that’s really nice.” “For vegetarians, we offer big Portobello mushrooms cooked in the oven with a balsamic reduc-
tion,” Dunajewski said. “They’re full of flavor.” For seafood lovers, a great starter is a full plate of mussels. The dish strays away from traditional marinara sauce, instead opting for a creamy blend. “It’s a creamy garlic white wine Alfredo sauce. It’s really, really

nice with garlic bread as well,” Dunajewski said. A must-try for patrons looking to broaden their horizons is the Rinelli escargot. The delicacy is sautéed in butter with garlic and fresh herbs and is served with a soft pastry puff. Yellow Tail regular and dining partner Mitch Kloorfain said the appetizer is delectable and left nothing to be added to a ‘to-go’ box. “I’ve had escargot many times. And this was the best ever,” Kloorfain said. “The puff pastry was a nice addition.” An exceptional dinner entree with an equally as impressive presentation is the crispy Yellow Tail snapper. The dish comes with a whole snapper, head to tail, deep fried to a crispy golden brown and served with a tropical salsa, black beans and yellow rice and fresh vegetables. “You pick it off the bone. It’s fantastic,” Lyke said. “The bone always makes for a better flavor.” The restaurant serves breakfast on weekend mornings. A highly recommended dish is the Yellow Tail Blue Benedict. The large portion is served with two eggs and delicious crab over an English muffin. The dish is topped with a hollandaise sauce made with egg yolk and liquid butter, seasoned with lemon juice, salt and a little black pepper. “Our breakfast (dishes) are crazy

From the Creators of Les Misérables, comes this classic story of love and loss in the turmoil of war. Based on Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, this stunning theatrical piece follows the tale of an American soldier and a Vietnamese girl who fall in love, only to be separated during the fall of Saigon in 1975. With thrilling, show-stopping musical numbers like “I Still Believe,” “Why God Why?,” and “The American Dream,” Miss Saigon is an epic, musical masterpiece of the enduring emotional power on the human spirit!

Wedding showcase coming to Tradition FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TRADITION — The holiday season is a magical time for dating couples to share their love with family and friends … and of course, get engaged! In 2011, “Brides” magazine conducted an American Wedding Study and found that 19 percent of all couples get engaged in December. The December holiday season is, by, far the most popular time of year for engage-
ments. Love and shopping are seriously in the air. After all the New Year’s Eve celebrations end, and people go back to work and school, life returns to normal … for some of us. The “some of us” is definitely not the newly engaged bride-to-be. The bride-to-be zips herself into wedding planning mode and spends an average of 10 hours a week researching ideas and inspirations while planning her wedding. Girlfriends, mothers, cousins, aunts, and any other passersby who are
shown the bling of the ring will provide countless pieces of advice with many congratulations. This information can be somewhat overwhelming. Hence, we present to you “The Wishful Wedding Showcase.” The showcase is hosted and presented by Tradition Town Hall and Traxx Entertainment and will take place on Thursday, Jan. 6 from 6–9 p.m. at Tradition Town Hall. The showcase is here to steer the brides-tobe in the right direction with ease. The showcase will feature the
very best wedding services on the Treasure Coast: photographers, videographers, cakes, wedding planners and officiants, flowers, catering and beverage, hair and make-up, rentals, wedding dresses, and men’s formal wear. More than 27 of the Treasure Coast’s finest wedding professionals under one roof, for one night only. Brides and grooms, and their family and friends are encouraged to join visit the showcase

BOOTY from page B13 the R&B chart. With the release of the self-titled triple platinum second album in 1975 came the group’s first major U.S. hits with “Get Down Tonight,” “That’s the Way (I Like It),” “Boogie Shoes” and “Rock Your Baby.” KC & The Sunshine Band became the first act to score four No. 1 pop singles in one 12-month period since the Beatles in 1964. Three of those singles crossed over to become No. 1 R&B, as well. The 1976 album, Part 3, also went triple platinum and yielded the No. 1 singles “I’m Your Boogie Man,” “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty” and “Keep It Comin’ Love.” The band’s momentum continued when “Boogie Shoes” was included on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. “Please Don’t Go” and “Yes, I’m Ready”, a duet with high school friend Teri DeSario, also became favorites. KC returned to the charts in 1983 with “Give It Up,” which also hit No. 1 in the UK. KC won a songwriting Grammy in 1976 for best R&B song for “Where is the Love” which was recorded by Betty Wright. He also received Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, as well as Producer of the Year in 1978 for
his work on the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack. In 1995, he recorded Get Down Live, a concert album that was gleaned from his performances in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Peru and Melbourne, Australia. KC’s “The Best of KC and The Sunshine Band” went gold in 1999. In 2001, KC released an album of all-new material entitled “I’ll Be There For You.” Proceeds from the title song, released as a single, were donated to the Sept. 11 relief effort. In 2002, KC received the coveted star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where Dick Clark and music producer Michael Lloyd turned out to honor him. That same year, “That’s The Way I Like It – The Harry Wayne Casey Story” was published. Since then, the band has enjoyed a surge in popularity. Their music has been featured in more than 200 motion picture soundtracks, video games, sporting events and TV shows including “Desperate Housewives,” “American Idol” and “Dancing With The Stars.” Music acts like White Zombie, Baha Men and Beyoncé Knowles have covered his music. Their infectious grooves and bass lines have been sampled by R. Kelly, Snoop Dogg and Trick Daddy, to name a few.
