Sex predator strikes in SLW Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A sexual predator lured and attacked a 12-year-old boy around Northwest Brenda Circle and Northwest Wolverine Road on Monday, Jan. 4. Sgt. Frank Sabol, public information officer at the Port St. Lucie Police Department, said the attack is startling. “This is a very rare occurrence, stranger-on-stranger (sex) crime,” he said. Suspect Much more often children and youths are sexually assaulted by adults they know and trust. The attack happened around 2 p.m. A

St. Lucie County Fire District looks to bolster borrowing power Bruno Moore

St. Lucie County—With 440 employees covering nearly 50,000 rescue calls across 614 square miles and servicing almost 300,000 people annually, it’s safe to say the St. Lucie County Fire District is faced with a daunting task. Even with an operating budget of 65 million dollars per year, unforeseen expenses
pop up. Since 1996, the district has been bound to legislation preventing it from borrowing any more than 1.5 million dollars a year. Fire Chief Buddy Emerson says that figure is outdated and he’s on a mission to increase the annual amount the district is allowed to borrow. He says the district is running on equipment and technology that’s long overdue for upgrading. “That limit is still in place today and it’s in-
adequate and unreasonable given what’s occurred over time,” Emerson said in a speech late last year to St. Lucie County’s legislative delegation. In the speech, Emerson said in 20 years the operating budget has quadrupled and the area covered has doubled. “All that growth, all the demand with no adjustment to our borrowing power in almost

Athletic trainer a Mets fixture Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Mike Herbst grew up in Brooklyn and attended Power Memorial Academy, the legendary high school that produced Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Chris Mullin and Len Elmore. Herbst was a tennis player and played tennis at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. He was a forensics major, but his heart wasn’t in it. “I moved to Florida to maybe walk on in tennis,” he said. “My uncle lived here and after a year, I could get in-state tuition. I went to St. Pete Junior College and then to the University of Florida, where I majored in exercise physiology. I wanted to be an athletic trainer. I did an internship at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne and four days after graduation, I signed with the Mets.” That was 25 years ago. Today, Herbst is athletic training coordinator for the Mets organization. He hires minor league
ᾐ
trainers and monitors them and coordinates medical services, working with physical therapist Dave Pearson and rehabilitation coordinator Jon Debus. The three work as a team and Herbst has high praise for both of them. For the inexperienced, of which I was one, the athletic trainer takes care of routine injuries. He’s the one who comes on the field and holds up two fingers to see if there’s a concussion, puts ice on a strain, or bandages a cut. If long-term rehabilitation is needed, the physical therapist takes over. The day begins at 6:30 a.m., with a meeting about the players, who’s hurt, the rehab program, courses of treatment and making sure trainers have sufficient supplies. While the trainers generally work with the player one-on-one, Herbst coordinates the care. A 7 a.m. staff meeting sets the day’s program. For Herbst, the training and therapy is never about “a shoulder,” or a “knee.” It’s about the players, who may be major leaguers or kids in their first year in the minors. “Sometimes, they’ve had surgery

They can’t compete and they get down,” said Herbst. “There’s a bit of psychology, to make it a little fun once in a while. For the most part, the kids are really good. Sometimes, they get hurt emotionally, in how they
deal with an injury. Sometimes the psychological end is more difficult. They don’t think they’ll get better, or it’s the first time they’ve been hurt. Sometimes they’re 17 or 18, from the Dominican Re-

20 years? If you look at the cost of the fire engines or the rescue trucks we purchase, those costs have doubled too. We can’t borrow what we need to purchase and equip more than 2 fire engines with $1.5 million. There’s no chance to even plan for the eventual replacement of existing 50 year old fire stations with that limitation,” he said. Because of the borrowing restrictions the district has no vehicle replacement budget and no capital improvement plan. Where other government entities have a long term plan to address needs the annual budget doesn’t cover, the district does not. “The analogy would be telling someone that they can’t buy a home until they have enough cash on hand to cover the entire expense with no possibility of a realistic mortgage,” Emerson said in his speech. “The Fire District currently has no specific borrowing plans. The budget we just passed contains no increases for fire engines or rescue trucks.” In fact, the district has been playing financial catch-up for nearly its entire existence. The Fire District was created by an act of the Florida Legislature in 1955 and had an initial borrowing cap of $500,000. That cap remained in effect until 1996; 41 years. If all goes well, the Florida Legislature may help unravel
the very financial conundrum it helped create. Florida State Representative Larry Lee Jr. (D-Ft. Pierce) is an ally in the district’s financial fight. Lee filed a bill on Nov. 24 that would allow the Fire District to borrow up to 10 percent of its operating budget. The three page bill — House Bill 785 — would provide leverage to buy new fire trucks and ambulances and build new stations. The bill reads, in part: “The board is hereby authorized and empowered, in order to carry out the purposes of this act, to borrow money not to exceed 10 percent of the district’s operating budget — the uses of which must be approved by a supermajority of six affirmative votes of the board, and the uses may not include normal operational expenses.” The bill was sent to Local Government Affairs subcommittee on December 10, 2015. The chief says the increase is a fiscally sound proposal that would have no impact on taxes. In his speech he also assured the public that the increase isn’t to cover an overstretched budget. The district operates debt free. He said it’s simply a matter of public safety. “We’re not asking for an open checkbook. We’re not asking for increased borrowing authority that would trigger a tax increase. It’s about planning for the future needs of our community,” he said.

Lake Harvey signs up Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

ST. LUCIE WEST — The signs are up at Lake Harvey announcing the forthcoming storm water management project. “We’re still some time off from starting the project,” Dennis Pickle, manager and utilities supervisor of the St. Lucie West Services District, said in a telephone interview. “Probably a year or so.” The lake is on about 12.5 acres that the district bought for $4.4 million in 2014. It’s at the northwest corner of the intersection at St. Lucie West and Cashmere boulevards. The district has and is seeking more grants for the storm-water work that’ll help drainage along St. Lucie West Boulevard from about Bethany Drive. There’ll be a 360-foot buffer around the lake when the work is done. The district is considering using that buffer as a place for passive
recreation, such as a nature trail. The district is a Community Development District, which is a hybrid creation of the State Legislature. The districts operate as governmental bodies to deliver some municipal services, such as water and sewer. The St. Lucie West Services District also handles storm-water management. However, Pickle said the district is “not in the parks and recreation business.” The district hopes to team up with the city, county, school board, or other partner to add a recreational element to the project. Pickle previously told the district’s board of supervisors that they’ll have to consider residents of King Isle when planning any recreational uses for Lake Harvey. The Lake Harvey property abuts to the community. The district has 128 lakes, many of which are in gated communities. It has rules against trespassing on any, which effectively bars any recreation on or around them.

SLW Services District board selects new member Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE WEST — Wayne Smith is now a member of the St. Lucie West Services District’s Board of Supervisors. The previous chairman, Harvey Cutler died on Sunday, Nov. 29, at the Treasure Coast Hospice House. He was 88. Smith will serve the remainder of Cutler’s term through 2018. Seven applied for the position: Smith, Dominick Graci; James Kawa; Theresa “Teri” Pinney; Robert Poller; William Ropoli; and Toney Stachewicz. The board interviewed them at its regular workshop on Monday, Jan. 4, and voted for their selection at the regular monthly meeting, Tuesday, Jan. 5. The candidates came with a wide range of backgrounds, but all expressed interest in continuing Cutler’s legacy of forward thinking. “I ask a lot of pointed questions,” Graci told the board. He added, “When I take an interest, I dig into things. I’m a fact finder.” Kawa came with a background in utilities. He worked for the City of Port St. Lucie’s utilities department for about 16 years. He retired last year. Kawa said it was an interesting time to work for the city. Port St. Lucie went from having about 89,000 in the 2000 census to 174,000 today. “When I went into utilities I never
thought I’d experience that kind of growth,” he said. Additionally, Kawa said his background enlighten him to a fact. “Sometimes the cheapest decision is not the best decision long term,” he said. Pinney was the only woman who applied for the position. She owns a T. Pinney & Associates, and has written for grants for the district, along with the city and county. She started the business in 2008 at her home. “Today I have six people under me, subcontractors,” she said. “I grew, and that’s a background I’d like to share.” Poller worked in communications, something he said the district needs more of. “I’ve worked in radio and television, and with newspapers,” he said. He said it’s important for the district to raise itself on people’s radars in an age when information is flying from all directions, so folks aren’t taken unawares when there are changes. “We all know the frequency that’s happening,” he said. Ropoli said he’ll take to the board an awareness that water goes past property lines and into people’s homes. Ropoli said that he’s experienced baffling plumbing issues and wondered, among other things, if they were related to the service district’s systems. He said

resident who aided the youth after the attack contacted police. At press time, the suspect remained at large, but Sabol said it was likely he’d be apprehended quickly thanks to a courageous victim. “The victim was very good at giving us a composite,” he said. Police say the victim described the attacker as a white male, about 5-and-a-half feet tall, weighing about 215 pounds. He has dark hair with grown-out buzz haircut and was wearing a white shirt and green shorts. Police say he fled the crime scene on foot. Sabol said parents should reassure their children that dramatic attacks like this one are rare, but that there are reasonable precautions to take such as staying with friends. “If they are going to walk around, use the buddy system,” Sabol said. He added that parents should give older children a refresher on avoiding people they don’t know. “The old stranger danger applies as well,” he said. Additionally, Sabol said that sexual predators are making use of social media just like everyone else. He said parents should coach their children that strang-

Smith said he applied for the position because the board needs representation from The Cascades. He said the community’s nearly 1,200 homes make it a big customer. “That’s close to $1 million in revenue to the district,” he said. “We are an important part of the community. We are an important part of the district.” Stachewicz is a familiar name to the board. He’s run for it three
TRAINER from page A3 public and don’t speak English.” Fortunately, Herbst speaks Spanish. The trainer said that his forte is working with younger trainers. “My real strength is helping younger trainers develop,” he said. “That’s my niche.” Herbst is especially proud of the internship program the Mets participate in, sponsored by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society. “There is the opportunity to sit in the training room and observe,” said Herbst. “It’s absolutely terrific. It’s posted on the website and we get resumes. We pick one, a PT or AT student with certification.” Two women, Brady Peterson and Veronica Mondac, who were interns, got jobs at Pepperdine and Wagner College. “The interns are allowed to treat, with supervision and we dictate the treatment,” Herbst said. “They all get jobs. They’re all terrific kids and don’t have preconceived notions. They do it the Mets way. One of my best employees, Deb Iwanow, started as an intern in Binghamton and worked her way up. She’s now the AA trainer with the Binghamton Mets.”
times, including against current members, he said. Stachewicz said his aim would be simply to continue the work already in progress. “There’s nothing I want to change,” he said. “I feel the present board is doing a great job.” He said as St. Lucie West approaches its maximum build out the role of the services district is to conserve and innovate for revenue streams. “I don’t see much more income coming into the district,” Stachewicz said. “We have to find a way to generate more income without the residents paying a tax, a rate increase.” The district hasn’t raised utilities rates since 2010. If it seems as if there are a lot of women, that is no accident. “We’re proactive with women trainers,” Herbst said. “They’re not women trainers, just trainers. The best one gets the job. People are after Deb Iwanow all the time. She’s like my assistant coordinator during Spring Training. We do all the physicals and she does the blood work.” Herbst said the players are all respectful of the women. They wear shirts and shorts in the training room and there has never been trouble. You have the distinct feeling that if there were a problem, it would only happen once. The trainer has two National League Championship rings. The first, from 2000, he gave to his father, also Mike Herbst, a captain with the New York Fire Department. He had wanted his son to take the fireman’s test. “He’s never taken it off,” Herbst said. Herbst wanted to take the opportunity to thank the Wilpon family, owner of the Mets. “The Wilpon family and Jeff Wilpon have been so terrific to me,” he said. “They’re really great owners. I could never thank them enough for their support and making my dream come true to work for a great organization.”

TREASURE COAST — The Fielden Institute for Lifelong Learning at Indian River State College is partnering with the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) to bring an exciting Archaeology Works series to Stuart in January. The topics for this 4-part course include Prehistoric Pottery, Historic Ceramics, Archaeological Drawing and Historical Cemeteries. Join FPAN staff to learn about Florida’s prehistoric pottery. Pottery dates back to 4,500 years and informs archaeologists about regionalism, trade, and migration. Participants will explore the topic and learn how archaeologists investigate. They will also get to try their hand at several analytical techniques. Hear FPAN staff discuss common historic ceramics found in Florida and the Caribbean form 1492-1850. Participants will also get a chance to learn analysis techniques used by professional archaeologists to interpret historic ceramics. Learn why archaeologists rely on drawings as a recording method.
FPAN staff will discuss the development of scientific drawing and recent changes with the advent of digital drawing methods. Participants will learn how to create scientific scale drawings that convey important information about artifacts. The series concludes with a lecture on Florida’s historic cemeteries work to record them. Historical cemeteries are one of Florida’s most threatened cultural resources in dire need of protection. Learn why archaeologists investigate historic cemeteries as well as the laws surrounding them. Participants will be able to learn how to document these sites and best practices for preservation. The course is Thursdays, Jan. 7, Feb. 4, March 3, and April 7, 2016. Each session runs from 2–3:30 p.m. at the Wolf Center at the IRSC Chastain Campus in Stuart. Advance registration is required. The Member Fee is $45 and the Non-Member Fee is $70. For more information about The Fielden Institute for Lifelong Learning at IRSC or to register for the Archaeology Works class, call 772462-7880 or visit www.irscfoundation.org.

Sheriff’s Office making new friends STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Stuart Maynard Clark might rather people didn’t check their Facebook. “The growing use and reliance on social media throughout society has unveiled new and effective methods for law enforcement to keep citizens informed, collect tips that lead to solving crimes and provide a new level of transparency and accountability to the public,” Sheriff Ken Mascara said in an emailed response to queries. The St. Lucie Sheriff’s Office recently posted an advisory on its Facebook page about a particularly frightening home invasion. The victim was an 83-year-old woman. But, Deputy Bryan Beaty, the public information officer, said the victim used her cane to get in a good head whack on the robber. “We put that on Facebook and in less than 24 hours we had neighbors calling, the guy’s neighbors,” Beaty said. The department arrested Clark and booked him on charges of robbery and battery on a person 65 or older, among others. The department has been growing its Facebook following for a couple years. In January, 2014, the page had 6,000 likes. That
increased to 10,500 by last January. As of press time, about 15,300 have liked the Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page. The Sheriff’s Office’s Twitter page has about 2,500 followers. “Facebook followers are very active and integral to our investigative process,” Beaty said. “They often see information we post about a recent case, and provide tips directly to detectives. In some cases, they post them to the Facebook post itself and we monitor those and pass along anything relevant to detectives.” Additionally, Beaty said, social media helps the Sheriff’s Office get general safety tips to the public that help reduce crime victims, and to just stay in touch with folks. It fits hand-in-glove with community policing, developing a positive presence in the community. What Beaty said Facebook is not is encouragement for citizens to attempt arrests. “We never encourage members of the community to ‘handle’ situations themselves,” he said in an email. “If they have information about a case, they are encouraged to contact us in one of the ways mentioned (in posts) to ensure their safety and the safety of others involved as well as maintaining the integrity of any ongoing investigation.” The page is located at www.facebook.com/stluciesheriff.

TRADITION — Arthur D’Amato has been managing green markets for about 12 years. He moved to Tradition in 2009, and has been involved in starting numerous green markets throughout South Florida ever since. He is now opening the Port St. Lucie Green Market, which will run Saturday’s from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at All Nations Church, located at 862 S.W. Glenview Ct. D’Amato — who is a retired builder and restaurant owner — recalled that he got the green market calling while living in North Carolina. “I was retired and had to do something with myself,” D’Amato said. “I love food and I love helping people, so I thought about trying the green market business. I’ve been hooked ever since.”

MARKET from page A14 One of his budding markets he started in 2013 at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center. According to D’Amato, the market generated a copious amount of interest but due to conflicts at the Civic Center he had to look for greener pastures. Starting on Jan. 9, D’Amato is bringing the Port St. Lucie Green Market back and will focused on growing it gradually. “We are excited to be going back to Port St. Lucie. We think it will be a super-mega market for us as we are in a great location,” said D’Amato. “We used to have up to 114 vendors and about 3,000 people at the Civic Center. We will be starting much smaller than that — maybe about 25 vendors and 500 to 600 people — but there is a lot of room to grow and we expect to get much bigger real soon.” The Port St. Lucie Green Market will foster a family — and pet-friendly — atmosphere with free admission and plenty of parking. D’Amato said he loves being in the business of managing green markets. “I love that we get to bring people fresh, organic produce at prices well below what they

Arthur D’Amato would find in a larger store,” he said. “Plus, we get to support local merchants and help them grow their businesses.” Since May of 2015, he has been running the Palm City Green Market at Immanuel Lutheran Church. It generates usually anywhere from 28 to 35 vendors each week with approximately 300 to 600 people coming out on an average week. Many vendors who currently participate at the Palm City Green Market are currently deciding whether to staff a table at the Port St. Lucie Green Market as well. One vendor who will have a

ST. LUCIE WEST — T-Mobile is calling, but the St. Lucie West Services District isn’t rushing to answer. “Until I feel PJ Development has given us the best offer, I’m not bringing it before the board,” Dennis Pickle, manager and utilities director, said. On Monday, Jan. 4, the services district’s board of supervisors had its last regular workshop. In December Pickle told the board that T-Mobile through PJ Development, Stuart, had approached the district about building a cell tower behind its office on Southwest Utility Drive. The tower could fetch the district upwards to $20,000 a year, with increases of up to 10 percent every five years, based on a proposed contract. In December, the board nodded to Pickle to return the call and ask T-Mobile for more. “They gave us a second proposal that I think is a little light,” Pickle said that the recent workshop. Pickle said the mobile-phone company upped the ante with a revenue-sharing offer. “Which is very minor and they’d have to pick that up,” he told the board. Board member Gregg Ney said he’s underwhelmed by the offer.
“I’m sorry, $20,000 a year is not significant in our budget, and what are we giving away?” he said at the workshop. The proposed tower could be anywhere from about 110 to 150 feet tall. It could be a metallic round tower reaching skyward, or camouflaged as a pine tree. Neither design includes guidewires. The proposed tower would most likely be visible from parts of Country Club Estates, and less-so from Lake Forest Pointe. The proposed tower would largely be invisible from most of St. Lucie West, because of buildings and trees obstructing the view. At the December meeting, board member Charles Altwein said the district faced a difficult choice even if offered a good compensation. “This is a love-hate situation,” he said at that meeting. “Most of us have cell phones, but hate the towers.” At the last workshop Pickle said public relations is important for the district to consider. “It may not be worth the black eye to the go through the process and the complaints from the neighbors,” he said. The minimum term the company is interested in is 30 years. Pickle previously said that if the company makes an offer the board would consider it’ll hold a public hearing.

The proposed tower, a monopole design, could be disguised as a number of things, including a tree or flagpole.

MARKET from page A15 table at both green markets is A Green Life Café & Marketplace. A Green Life is a Jensen Beach market run by Elaine Freedman of Port St. Lucie and her daughter, Alicia Hernandez of Jensen Beach. “We have been very successful at the Palm City Green Market, said Freedman. “We have good sales and promoted our business to numerous customers.” They have had a set-up at the Palm City Green Market since its opening week, selling mainly jars of raw local honey and Amish jams, according to Freedman. On Jan. 9, Freedman will be doubling up on the green market craze and in addition to her running a fruitful table in Palm City, her daughter will be offering goodies at the new market. “Our customers love the local honey,” said Hernandez. We are keeping them stocked in honey — one jar at a time.” D’Amato said in a statement that he is proud that his Green Markets support and promote the “entrepreneurial efforts of local farmers, bakers, crafters, artisans and independent smallscale local vendors.” According to an October 2015 article in South Florida Food & Wine.com, “Farmers Markets
are sprouting up all over South Florida. “Local and organic fruits and vegetables are plentiful as well as many artisan products are available such as baked goods and breads, jellies, cheeses, eggs, flowers and plants. “Every market is different yet they all continue to grow and expand weekly both with vendors and visitors. “The growth and popularity of farmers markets in South Florida is at an all-time high and has a very promising future.” Dan Kent, of Palm City, likes the fresh produce the markets provide. On most Saturdays Kent makes a special trip to the Palm City Green Market to buy his fruits and vegetables for the week. “I can get fresh stuff there that lasts longer and tastes better,” said Kent. “I don’t have time to shop for produce during the week. Their stuff [at the market] usually lasts all week and doesn’t go bad.” The Port St. Lucie Green Market will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will take place at All Nations Church, located at 862 S.W. Glenview Court (right off of S.W. Port St. Lucie Blvd.). For questions about the Port St, Lucie or Palm City Green Markets, call D’Amato at (772) 345-3797.

TREASURE COAST — All Aboard Florida, (AAF) the embattled company eager to start a passenger service rail line between Miami and Orlando is facing a financial detour. The Florida Development Finance Corporation (FDFC) postponed the sale of $1.75 billion in unsecured bonds that underwriters have been fiercely marketing since the summer of 2015. The FDFC is a state authorized issuer of municipal bonds which provides qualifying projects with, in the case of All Aboard Florida, tax-exempt, low interest, bond financing. According to the Enterprise Florida website, the FDFC “was designed to improve low cost capital availability to Florida’s manufacturers and nonprofit companies that qualify for tax exempt finance under IRS rules.” Though the reasons for the postponement remain unclear, it comes amid a flurry of legal activity on the part of both All Aboard Florida and its opponents. Arguments range from AAF attorneys
accusing opposing counsel of conspiracy to improperly influence the sale of the bonds to lawyers for cities against the project accusing AAF lawyers of making assumptions based on inaccurate information. The postponement also comes at the same time global markets are turning sluggish and commodity prices are dropping. Those indicators typically reflect a struggle to sell municipal

Ingram-Traylor, Marilyn Cohen, president of Envision Capital Management in California, said, “The fact that they’re trying to offload their risk to investors is very telling. This isn’t something I would recommend for my clients.” Ingram-Traylor has been rallying against the train project since it went public a few years ago and sees the postponement of the bond selling as a tell-tale sign of the project’s financial instability. “It is an indication that the private markets do not have confidence in the viability of this project. This is why I have opposed any taxpayer or government backed funding,” Ingram-Traylor said. That’s exactly what the FDFC does, Ingram- Traylor explained. “The FDFC has mandated that
these bonds must be purchased only by institutional investors in a minimum of $100,000 blocks. AAF backs the bonds. These bonds are tax exempt and a form of corporate welfare.” Ingram-Traylor says the train project will not only affect quality of life along the Treasure Coast with increased traffic, noise and other disruptions, but it will likely end up being a tax burden as well. “The government should spend our money wisely and judiciously and not on such a high risk project where I believe the taxpayers will be left holding the bag,” she said. Ingram-Traylor has been candid about her doubts that All Aboard Florida will have the ridership necessary for it to be profitable. “No one believes they’ll have the ridership to fill 32 passenger trains a day.” Editor’s Note: Your Voice News reached out to All Aboard Florida Vice President of Governmental Affairs Rusty Roberts but calls were not returned by press time.

Dear Executive Director, The Palms of St Lucie West has been an essential part of my life for the past four years. Both my mom and my aunt lived in the memory care neighborhood at the Palms during this time. The Palms provided me so much peace of mind and the caregivers have become extended members of my family. Every aspect of this organization has been outstanding. The building is always clean, the food is great, and the care is exceptional! My mom and my aunt both thrived at the end of their lives in the memory care neighborhood at The Palms. The team at The Palms supported me tremendously during my mom’s journey through dementia, and made what should have been some of the worst days of my life very comforting. I depended on them for every aspect of her life. Thank you so much for all you do, your team includes some of the most incredible people I have ever met. I could not have done this without you. Sincerely, Beverly O.

ST. LUCIE WEST — If you are awakened by an unfamiliar sound, your first thought may be to grab your handgun, to go find and shoot the perceived intruder. That’s the wrong response, according to Walter Donald Nygard, owner of Shooting Safe in Port St. Lucie. A man accidentally shot his girlfriend by accident in St. Lucie West. Nygard said this tragedy points to a firearm fact. “The only time you use the gun is to defend your life,” Nygard said. Nygard advises that if you hear a possible intruder at night, stay in your bedroom and call 911. Tell the 911 operator where you are in the house. He added that it’s important to stay on the line, so if an intruder enters your bedroom there’s documentation of what’s going on. Nygard also advises that people have shotguns for home protection rather than handguns. It’s easier to hit the target with a shotgun. It also avoids a problem associat-
This Season
ed with using a handgun. A bullet could go through a wall and end up entering a neighboring house, he said. “If you use a shotgun, the pellets don’t have the velocity (to do that),” Nygard said. But ultimately, he said, it’s better to have cops deal with the “bad guys,” Nygard said. There’s been several situations in Port St. Lucie involving people shooting loved ones mistaking them as intruders, Nygard said. One guy thought he was shooting an intruder, but “it ended up being his son,” Nygard said. And the situation has played out elsewhere in Florida. Within two months of the latest accidental shooting in St. Lucie West, a similar situation occurred in St. Cloud. A mother shot her daughter after mistaking her for an intruder. Authorities say that other types of accidental shootings, such as accidental discharges, are far more prevalent. Most such incidents can be prevented through responsible ownership and familiarity with the firearms.

SAFETY from page A24 Law enforcement authorities determined that the St. Cloud shooting was accidental, according to the Orlando Sentinel. That was also the conclusion the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office reached after Philip Anthony Nisa Jr. killed his girlfriend, Glenda Ruth Gregory on Nov. 19. According to a report from the Sheriff’s Office, Nisa told authorities that he had been sleeping with Gregory before the shooting. He told the Sheriff’s Office that he was unaware that she had gotten out of bed. He then said to authorities he woke up and he heard a noise, leading him to think that an intruder had entered the residence. Believing he was targeting the intruder, Nisa fired a shot, which struck Gregory in the chest, the report said. She later died at Tradition Medical Center. The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office declined to talk about the incident and emphasized that any comments regarding gun safety were not related to that incident. Lt. Jerry Rothman said many accidental shootings result from people thinking weapons are unloaded. Some don’t know how to empty a gun of ammunition, Rothman said. There should always be the assumption, he said, that a gun is loaded. Anyone who owns a gun should “have a familiarity of how to use the firearm.” A gun should be a last resort instead of a first resort in responding to a situation, Rothman said. People also need to know how to properly display and store weapons, Rothman said. Besides accidental
discharges, other common gun tragedies involve children getting a hold of a firearm. “They think they’re playing with a toy,” Rothman said. “Parents should teach their children about guns,” said Nygard. He said they should also keep the guns securely contained, and tell children that if they find a gun outside of the home, not to touch it, but instead to call law enforcement. On the website, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, there are “10 rules of safe gun handling.” Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Firearms should be unloaded when not actually in use. Don’t rely on your gun’s safety. Be sure of your target and what’s behind it. Use correct ammunition. If your gun fails to fire when the trigger is pulled, handle with care. Always wear eye and ear protection when shooting. Be sure barrel is clear of obstructions before shooting. Don’t alter or modify your gun. And have guns serviced regularly. Learn the mechanical and handling characteristics of the firearm you are using. Rothman said there’s no law requiring anyone buying a gun to attend a firearms safety course, but the National Rifle Association and other organizations and businesses offer such courses. The discussion about gun safety comes at a time when national news outlets report that President Obama is expected to close loopholes on background checks for gun buyers, such as at gun shows.

animals suffer in silence-until someone comes along who is willing to get involved. Brandi is a one-year-old Pit Bull Terrier girl who owes her life to people who got involved. Used as a breeder, she had developed a severe infection in both eyes. She had lost most of her fur and was infested with worms. Because of her medical issues her owner was planning to shoot her. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan stepped in and arranged for her to come to Dogs & Cats Forever. Board member Keri Burgess, took Brandi to what was to be her first ever vet visit. “I realized she had never been in an air conditioned room,” said Keri. “At the end of being poked, prodded, blood drawn and skin scraping done she came over and put her head in my lap — as if to say ‘Thank you for saving me.’” At the shelter, Brandi’s personality blossomed, as she won the hearts of staff and volunteers alike. After her recovery, she was shown for adoption, and soon met June and Joe Gilmer. “Brandi was the first dog we looked at,” said June. “She sniffed us and immediately flopped down at our feet to be petted.” The Gilmers needed to look no
further. Brandi went home with them the next day. June said Brandi adjusted to being a house dog immediately, adding that she is definitely not a watchdog, but happily greets guests and asks be petted. “She thinks she is a lap dog,” said June. “She sleeps with us and we love it. She is always with one of us. What more could we ask for?” Dogs and Cats Forever, Inc. was organized in 1988 for the purpose of building and maintaining a shelter for homeless dogs and cats on the Treasure Coast. The shelter is founded on the principle of trying to find good, loving homes for our animals. Our pledge is that any healthy pet not adopted, will have a safe and permanent home at Dogs and Cats Forever, Inc. for the duration of its natural life. Our shelter is not connected with any other animal society. It is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt project totally dependent on donations and endowments. Officers and Members are unpaid volunteers. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Tom Servinsky knows many instruments from the inside out. The classically-trained clarinetist and teacher is also a graduate of the Chautauqua Institute of Piano Technology program. He has been a registered piano technician for more than three decades. Servinsky is also an assistant director and one of three conductors of the Treasure Coast Youth Symphony, featuring 70 young musicians from 6th grade to the first year of college. They come from St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River and Palm Beach counties. The ensemble will perform its tribute to ‘Dances’ Jan. 18 at St. Bernadette Church, as part of the concert series there. Servinsky spoke recently about the theme of this program. “Dance is one of the most primitive forms of human expression,” he said. “It’s used in symphonic and operatic works. It’s been used since man has been making music. We’ll feature four or five major works built upon the dance idea.” The program spans Europe and the United States as it introduces dances by a variety of composers. “We’ll start with Rossini’s ‘La Danza,’ he said. “It’s a tarantella. It’s very famous and was used in ‘The Godfather.’ Then we go to the Gypsies, with Brahms’ ‘Hungarian Dances.’ We’ll play four of the 16. It’s put together almost like a symphonic work. The kids play it so well. It’s brilliant.” No program of dance music would be com-

Resolutions for a Better Brain

efore the Tiffany crystal-encrusted ball finished its descent, and before the confetti showers had fluttered down, and the New Year’s kisses and good wishes were bestowed, you probably thought a little bit about what the New Year would bring and what you might do differently. Many of us make a list and resolve to live healthier, work less, play more, and profess our love a little more often. One easy and potentially life-changing resolution we’d like to suggest is to add a little music to your life. An article written by Diane Cole for National Geographic magazine shared reports of studies conducted which supported something musicians have long known. Music is good for your health, your brain, and your heart. We’ve long known that music helps children improve academically by creating neural connections that can last a lifetime, but did you know that learning to play a musical instrument even as a mature adult can have a profound and lasting effect on your brain and your health? According to Cole, studies have shown that students aged 60 to 85 who started taking piano lessons showed “robust gains in memory, verbal fluency, the speed at which they processed information, planning ability, and other cognitive functions” when compared with seniors who had not received lessons. Further, the brain exercise that you get as an adult while learning to play an instrument helps alleviate insom-

So, while learning to play an instrument may be something you knew was good for your kids and grandkids, who knew the benefits to adults could be so important? All of us at Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society know well how important music is in our lives. That’s why we work all year long to provide opportunities for Treasure Coast residents to enjoy live performances by professional musicians. Along the way, we are also committed to providing plenty of opportunities for master classes, educational performances, one-to-one instruction, and even summer camps for children and adults to improve their musical knowledge and performance skills. And you don’t have to be a professional musician to perform with the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society. Every Tuesday evening, we reserve a portion

“We’ll do the ballet ‘Appalachian Spring’ by Aaron Copland. It has the rodeo and the barn dance, bringing to light a whole new form of dance, with Americana music.”
SYMPHONY from page B1 plete without at least one waltz and this program offers several. “We’ll do Tchaikovsky’s waltz from the opera ‘Eugene Onegin,’ known as ‘The Skater’s Waltz,’ Servinsky said. “Then we’ll do a Strauss waltz. We can’t leave that out.” Strauss is also represented by a polka, “Polka Furioso,” and then the scene shifts to this side of the Atlantic. “We’ll do the ballet ‘Appalachian Spring’ by Aaron Copland,” he said. “It has the rodeo and the barn dance, bringing to light a whole new form of dance, with Americana music.” Servinsky noted that all of the works are being performed in their original form and are not simplified arrangements. “It’s terribly difficult even for professionals,” he said. “It’s a tall task, but they are doing a marvelous job. We’ve presented the concert and it has been very well-received. It’s fun for the musicians and a hoot for the audience. We try for thematic programs because they’re a good way to teach an audience about music. It keeps the attention and they get enthusiastic about the program.” The group will continue the thematic program in April, with a concert called “Magic and Make-
Tom Servinsky conductor Treasure Coast Youth Symphony Believe.” It will feature pieces built on myth, magic, and, yes, make-believe. One of the pieces, “The Lieutenant Kije Suite,” by Prokofief, is based on a Russian story about a war hero who never existed. For now, Servinsky is pleased to be returning to St. Bernadette and the concert series sponsored by Thomas Bold. “Tom Bold is a big supporter of the orchestra and a huge asset,” he said. “When we can play in his series, we take advantage.” The Treasure Coast Youth Symphony will perform “Dances” at St. Bernadette Church, 350 N.W. California Blvd., Port St. Lucie, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35. Call (772) 224-7089.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — On a clear night, the naked eye can see stars that are millions of light years from Earth. But even under the best conditions, we can see less than 200 feet into the ocean. Oceanographic technology plays an integral role in opening up worlds that would otherwise remain unknown to us. Florida Atlantic University Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) will unveil its first rotating exhibit to feature the tools HBOI scientists and engineers use to explore the ocean on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 10 a.m. in the new gallery at the Ocean Discovery Visitor’s Center, 5600 US 1 North, Fort Pierce. “Sight, Sound and Dynamics in

the Sea: The Role of Technology in Ocean Exploration.” This is the first in a series of exhibits featured under HBOI’s “Mission: Ocean Discovery” program. The exhibit presents a view into the innovative technology being developed at HBOI, where researchers are making groundbreaking discoveries every day. “Our scientists and engineers are some of the best in the world in the field of ocean technology, engineering and exploration,” said Megan Davis, Ph.D., HBOI interim executive director. “This exhibit provides a rare up-close look at the devices that allow them to create their own underwater laboratories and effectively conduct their research.” The exhibit will remain open to the public during regular Ocean Discovery Visitor’s Center hours through August. For more information, contact Carin Smith at (772) 242-2230 or carinsmith@fau.edu, or visit www. fau.edu/hboi.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Sunrise Theatre Executive Director John Wilkes is announcing the 2015/16 season addition of Brass Transit on Thursday, February 4 at 7pm. Tickets go on sale to Sunrise Theatre 2015/16 members on Monday, January 4 and to the General Public on Monday, Jan. 14. They’re being called the world’s greatest tribute to Chicago. But it’s not Brass Transit’s management saying that. It’s the growing legion of fans on both sides of the border, who have heard this eight-piece Toronto group flawlessly rip through Chicago’s catalogue of hits from the ’70s. The band’s show includes all the hits from Chicago’s golden age. With a world-class horn section, a rocking rhythm section and vocals stacked skyhigh, Brass Transit transports its audience back to the freewheeling days of the seventies. The eight-piece Brass Transit formed about four years ago
when trumpet player, Tony Carlucci, had a vision for a onenight performance of Chicago songs by a band comprised of all the best session musicians in Toronto. “Chicago has always been one of my favorite bands, from a very young age,” said Carlucci. Brass Transit is a high-energy, hit-filled show that features classics like Make Me Smile, 25 Or 6 To 4, Call On Me, Wishing You Were Here, Old Days, Questions 67 & 68, and Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? If you love Chicago, you will not want to miss Brass Transit. Tickets went on sale to Sunrise Theatre Members Monday, January 4 by membership level and to the general public on January 14. Become a Sunrise Member TODAY and get the Best Seats in the House! For tickets or more information call the box office at (772) 4614775 or visit us online at www. SunriseTheatre.com. The Sunrise Theatre is located at 117 South Second Street, Fort Pierce, Florida.
