State of the City address on the agenda for FREE Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PORT ST. LUCIE — Mayor Greg Oravec is giving the annual State of the City address before the Nov. 9 regular City Council meeting. He announced the date and time at the council’s Oct. 12 meeting. The decision came after a rift with the council at a previous meeting. “I was contemplating a major break in tradition without a public discussion, and it’s pretty understandable in hindsight,” Oravec said at the recent meeting. At the earlier meeting, members of the City Council wanted to know why Oravec planned to give the annual State of the City address at the St. Lucie Trail Golf Club for $50 a seat, with sponsorships ranging from $500 to $2,500 available to business donors. “The public should not have to pay to go to this event,” Council-

ST. LUCIE WEST — Mayor Greg Oravec headed back to school. Actually, he met with third graders and seventh graders at Renaissance Charter School
at St. Lucie on Friday, Oct. 8. He discussed civics and local government and shared some of his 19 plus years of experience in local government. Oravec answered attentive student’s questions and as it turned out the children knew quite a bit about government already.
“I was very impressed with your knowledge of the Constitution and levels of government,” he told the children after quizzing them. Oravec then asked the schoolchildren for five things they’d do

Dear Your Voice News & Views Readers
“As an experienced hearing aid wearer, I know the importance of getting accurate information about your hearing loss and all of the hearing aids out there. I have seen all of the big ads talking about hearing aids and I was so confused that I attended one of Joe Mutter’s Hearing Healthcare Informational Seminars. I was so pleased to find out that the seminar was just that; education and information for people with hearing loss and how to make smart decisions when shopping for not only a hearing aid but a hearing healthcare provider too! I was very impressed with the information presented and decided to work with Joe for my new hearing aids, I am so glad I did! Joe provides a great service and does not do the old bait and switch routine. I’ve had my new hearing aid for over a year now and could not be more pleased with Joe, the hearing aid, the exceptional care, and service that Joe puts into ensuring that I hear as well as I possibly can! I strongly encourage anyone thinking about getting a hearing aid or if you suspect you have hearing loss to attend one of Joe’s seminars. Joe provides excellent service anytime you need him, he will be there for you!” James McCallion Pt. St. Lucie, Florida
We’ll expose the truth about hearing aids that most companies DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW! Leave your checkbook at home. No hearing aids will be sold at this seminar.

District takes steps to reduce odors from water plant Jay Meisel
FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE WEST — The St. Lucie West Services District is taking steps to reduce any odors that may arise from its sewerage treatment plant. The District board has approved spending $75,000 for Evoqua Water Technologies equipment, ZABOCS system, to reduce the odor. Dennis Pickle, manager of the district, said the new equipment should be installed during the next several months. Pickle said the equipment will reduce or eliminating hydrosulfide gas coming from the plant. The gas produces a rotten egg type of odor. Basically, he said, the air from the plant is filtered through a carbon strip, which filters out the gas, resulting in fresh air leaving the plant. “It’s just a continuous thing,” Pickle said, the process doesn’t stop.
Information provided by Evoqua states that the system provides two levels of treatment. One removes hydrogen sulfide and the second phase removes both organic and inorganic odors. Pickle said the existing equipment to reduce odors has been place for a few years. At the time that equipment was installed, he said, it represented the best technology available then. “Obviously, they come out with better technology to strip the odors out of the tanks and this is better technology,” Pickle said. Evoqua says on its website that it installed such a system in an unnamed West Florida county and it replaced several systems in place. The system uses an advanced, non-hazardous biological air treatment technology that combines gas adsorption with biological oxidation to capture and eliminate organic and inorganic odors. It offered the county exceptional odor control in a reduced footprint with lower operation

The two-phase treatment system will replace a one-phase system, resulting in removal of a larger number of different types of
odors, Evoqua said. Everett Child of St. Lucie West agrees with the proactive plan

Cancer survivor shares lessons learned
I
t was April 2000. I was working in the women’s department at Sear’s in suburban Pittsburgh when a nun came up to me. She was using a walker and needed help. I ran around finding what she needed. When we finished, she said she would pray for me. I said that everyone could use prayers. The next day, I did a breast self-exam, something I didn’t do often enough. I found a mass the size of a pea. I made an appointment with my gynecologist for the next day. She was pretty sure it was a cyst, but she sent me for a mammogram. It was inconclusive, so they did other tests that were also inconclusive. Everyone still thought it was a cyst…but. The radiologists decided to do a needle biopsy and I called my husband, who was at work, to come and be with me. The doctors and I joked and one said if

Shelley Koppel she were a betting woman, she’d bet on a cyst. Then the needle went in and the mass was rock hard. The temperature in the room dropped as everyone looked
up. I asked her what she thought now and she said to hope for a miracle. It didn’t happen. On the following Tuesday, after a very long weekend, I was back at work and insisted that the doctor call me there. I couldn’t stand sitting home. We were so busy that when the phone rang and I picked it up, I’d forgotten about the call. When I identified myself, she told me I had cancer. I had an elderly couple at my register and I looked up at them, dropped the phone and said, “I have to go. I have cancer.” Cancer. It is one of the most
feared words in the English language, matched only, perhaps by Alzheimer’s. I was fortunate. My cancer was caught early and I was a good candidate for a lumpectomy. I had been a medical writer for several years in Pittsburgh and knew a cadre of great doctors who had become friends. I rallied them around me. The day came when my mom and I went to see a world-famous surgeon. My mom went with me because she’s an excellent note taker. It’s really good to have someone like that with you because you are still in shock. It’s hard to remember details. After the surgeon left, confirming that I’d have a lumpectomy, we were left with the nurse. My mom and the nurse started talking about the surgery and

hat’s the biggest obstacle to your ability to invest successfully? Is it the ups and downs of the financial markets? Political events? The fact that you weren’t born rich? Actually, the chief hurdle you face is something over which you have control: your own emotions. Your emotions can lead to a
variety of ill-advised investment behaviors, such as these: • Cutting losses – Declines in the financial markets can lead some investors to try to “cut their losses” by selling investments whose price has declined. Yet, when prices have dropped, it may actually be a good time to buy investments, not sell them, especially when the investments are

still fundamentally sound. • Chasing performance – In the investment world, the flip side of “fear” is “greed.” Just as some investors are propelled by fear of loss, others are motivated by quick, big gains. They may pursue “hot” investments, only to be disappointed when the sizzle quickly fizzles. Instead of trying to “score” that one big winner, you may be better off spreading your investment dollars among a range of vehicles – stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and so on. While diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss, it may help reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. • Focusing on the short term – When the market is down, you might get somewhat upset when you view your monthly investment statements. But any individual statement is just a snapshot in time; if you were to chart your investment results over a period of 10, 15 or 20 years, you’d see the true picture of how your portfolio is doing – and, in all likelihood, that picture would look better than a statement or two you received during a down
Jamie Chapogas market. In any case, don’t overreact to short-term downturns by making hasty “buy” or “sell” decisions. Instead, stick with a longterm strategy that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. • Heading to the investment “sidelines” – Some people get so frustrated over market volatility that they throw up their hands and head to the investment “sidelines” until “things calm down.” And it’s certainly true that, when owning stocks, there are no guarantees; you do risk losing some, or all, of your investment. But if you jump in and out of the

if they were mayors. Topping the children’s list was cutting pollution. Oravec told them there’s a lot people in local government can do to help reduce pollution by implementing recycling programs, replacing aging fleets with more fuel-efficient cars, creating better storm-water treatment plans, and more. A girl suggested for the list, “Help people from other countries.” “I applaud you for this: help people,” he said. “That’s why I became mayor — to help people.” Oravec explained that local government has fewer options for helping internationally. But, he told the children, if they’re determined to help people in other countries there are ways to do it, such as going to work for non-governmental organizations, the United Nations, or the state department. The third item on the children’s if-I-were-mayor list was getting better food at Renaissance’s cafeteria. “That is a highly local issue,” he said. One with options, Oravec said. “We can write some letters and do some lobbying,” the mayor told
WWW.YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM the children. Also on the children’s mayor wish list was stopping wars. He commended the children for the noble aim. “As a citizen of the country and world, you can work to reduce wars,” he told them. Rounding off the children’s list of things they’d do as mayor is help develop technology. The mayor said that’s a private-sector activity and the role of local government is to help create environments where businesses can grow and innovate. The mayor took questions from the children, too. The first asked was whether he was a Democrat or Republican. “At the city level, its non-partisan,” Oravec said. “Since I never dodge a question, I’m not affiliated with a party.” A child asked what was the last book he’d read. Oravec said it was “Leadership in the 21st Century,” but that he’d read all the Harry Potter books — twice. He left them with this bit of advice: choose your own aims and keep learning in and out of school. He told the children he’d like to return to school to complete a master’s degree and go beyond that. “You always want to be growing as a person,” he said.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Geoffrey Zheng, a senior at Lincoln Park Academy, has been named a semifinalist for the 2016 National Merit Scholarship program. He was the only student from the St. Lucie Public Schools to achieve the honor. The program recognizes high school seniors with the highest scores on the PSAT/National Merit Qualifying Test who have meet the program requirements. They are eligible to compete for one of 7,400 National Merit Scholarships totaling more than $32 million. Zheng lives in St. Lucie West with his father, Quan, mother Wei Cai and sister Callie. He is a life-long Port St. Lucie resident although his parents were born in China. Principal Henry Sanabria told Zheng of the award. “It was really cool,” Zheng said. “He and our assistant principal walked into the classroom. It was pretty surprising and I was honored. It was cool in front of all my classmates.” Zheng’s father is a professor
of physics at Indian River State College, and his parents chose Lincoln Park for him at an early age. “It’s the best high school in our county,” he said. “It’s a magnet school. Our names were put on the waiting list when we were born. There’s a really long waiting list.” Zheng is thinking about college and is applying early to Princeton, his first choice. He hopes to study physics, but he is not decided on whether he will have an academic career. “I think career-wise (I’d like) engineering or applied physics,” he said. “With a physics major, you can branch off. It will give me a really good background. The physics program at Princeton impressed me the most.” If Zheng is not accepted at Princeton, he has backup plans. He is also applying to Harvard and MIT, as well as liberal arts school Amherst and Williams. In addition to applying to colleges, Zheng has to prepare his National Merit application. He and the school must submit a detailed application that includes the student’s academic record, participation in school and com-

ADDRESS from page A1 woman Shannon Martin said at the council’s regular meeting on Sept. 28. Oravec said the letter detailing plans for the State of the City address on Nov. 18 was a draft. “Nothing had been finalized,” he said at that meeting. “That was a conversation that was going to be had tonight during comments.” Council members were skeptical. “I got an invitation,” Councilwoman Michelle Berger said at the meeting. “Typically when you get an invitation the event’s been planned.” The letter Berger referred to detailed plans for Oravec to deliver the State of the City at the club with a social hour and dinner. Seating, the letter reads, was limited to 150. Sponsorships, the letter says, were to “support the Mayor’s Sidewalk Initiative with the Port St. Lucie Sunset Rotary Club.” “For me, the matter of sidewalks is a big issue for the city,” Oravec said at the earlier meeting. “We’ll never have sidewalks fast enough.” There were also plans given in the letter for a drawing for a painting to benefit Rotary International’s Polio Plus program. “Will this exclude the public who can’t afford a ticket?” Councilman Ron Bowen asked. Oravec said that few members of the public attend State of the City addresses. Typically such addresses are gatherings of area elected officials, city and county officials, activists and reporters. “There are not very many Mr. and Mrs. Port St. Lucie going,” the mayor said. The council and mayor show a great deal of tension over numerous issues, and he’s frequently on the dissenting side of 4-1 votes. That sparked concerns about what the mayor would include in a State of the City address, Oravec’s first. “I’m concerned any message given, currently, may not be representative of this body,” Martin said.
Mayor Greg Oravec Oravec told the council that the message given in the address is his call alone. “As far as your concern about the message, that’s my prerogative as mayor,” he responded. In an emailed response to queries between the meetings, Oravec said he intended no slight to the council, but hoped to transform the State of the City address into an event with greater importance and benefit. “Historically, the State of the City has been presented in the City Council Chambers or, more recently, in the Civic Center to an audience primarily composed of city employees,” he wrote. “I was hoping to elevate its impact and wanted to try to find a way to create a must-attend regional social event which would bring community stakeholders together to actively consider the state of the largest city on the Treasure Coast and ninth most populous city in Florida and how the state of PSL impacts the state of St. Lucie County, the Treasure Coast and Florida.” At the recent meeting, Berger said that having this year’s address at the council chambers made sense, given the tensions, but hoped it would move to a larger venue in 2016. “I still think that is an event that can be at the civic center or community center and we can get to the point where more people come,” she said.

ST. LUCIE WEST — Benjamin Franklin Plumbing may be an international company with hundreds of franchises in the U.S. and Canada, but the local franchise — hubbed at 1631 SW South Macedo Blvd, Port St. Lucie — has their priorities straight. Customer satisfaction is at the top of their list. Not only are the technicians well-vetted professionals, who have undergone thorough drug and background screenings, they are trained to be fastidious, courteous, and solicitous of every client’s needs. Each technician drives a 14-foot box-truck complete with water heaters, toilets, faucets, garbage disposals and thousands of common repair parts you can think of — a literal “warehouse on wheels,” as General Manager, Matt Black, calls it. The company’s equipment is state-of-the-art and allows technicians to locate leaks by sonar electronic detection and video camera sewer lines as well. Once a diagnosis is made, they can immediately set to work, instead of waiting for supplies. Upon arrival, the technicians offer a free safety inspection. “Sometimes,” said Black, “we’ll get called out for a leaking hose bib or a dripping faucet. While we are there we will offer to do a free safety inspection, and we’ll find a washing machine hose with a knot in it the size of a softball, that’s getting ready to burst.” The priority is to identify the more urgent health and safety issues for their clientele. “We definitely provide a health and safety service,” said Black.

Clearly, Ben Franklin’s chief pride is their punctuality. They tag themselves “The Punctual Plumber” and hold to the motto: “If there’s any delay, it’s you we pay.” The company pays $5 for every minute they’re late and will reimburse up to $300 for a late arrival or canceled job. In the current economic climate, many companies take after airlines and hotels, shamelessly overbooking, canceling, and rebooking appointments. Ben Franklin in Port St. Lucie refuses to make promises they can’t uphold. They have a standby list in case slots open up, but once their appointment schedule is filled, they honor their commitments and close the book. According to Black, being part of a national company allows them to be up to date on all equipment and products and outfits them

with a highly functional dispatch and scheduling software to keep up with the needs of their franchise, which extends all the way from Sebastian in Indian River County to North Palm Beach. Ben Franklin of the Treasure Coast began in 1999 as Aqua Dimensions Plumbing (ADP), a service and new construction company. By 2000, still in their infancy, they’d allied themselves with Plumber’s Success International and Contractors 2000 (now called the Nexstar Network). Both of these organizations helped provide ADP with management and technical training, consultation and infrastructure. In 2005, the business became so successful that they bought into the Benjamin Franklin franchise. They have continued to grow ever since. Ben Franklin Plumbing is presently a subsidiary of Clockwork Home Services (CHS), which was acquired in 2010 by Direct Energy, now the largest provider of home services in North America. In 2011, the local company was recognized by CHS as their fastest growing franchise nationally. In 2014, their NPS ranked top 5 in the nation. The NPS or Net Promoter Score is a third-party customer loyalty metric that
evaluates a company’s recommend ability via customer survey. A score greater than 50 is said to be “excellent.” This local franchise currently boasts an NPS of 75, 10 points higher than their national affiliate. Owner, Robert Ludlum, has been with the company since their humblest origins. Matt Black began with the company in 2000 as a purchasing agent and was quickly promoted to service manager and then to general manager in 2007. During the recent economic downturn, the local franchise had to make major concessions, but unlike many doomed and self-defeating businesses, they did not lay off a single staff member. They seem as committed to each other as a family as they are to their customers. Ben Franklin offers an annual membership program that includes a free safety inspection and water-heater analysis. The annual program offers 15 percent off services. Senior citizens, as well as teachers and first responders, receive a 10 percent discount off services, repairs, or replacements. SURVIVOR from page A6 suddenly I said, “I don’t have to do this.” They both stared. They knew that as a medical writer, I was aware of the consequences of not acting. I said, “I can wait, and when it becomes bad, I can go to Paris and throw myself off the Pont Neuf.” The nurse and my mother looked at me as if I’d lost my mind. I kept saying that I didn’t have to do it. Finally, they got it. Both of them told me that of course, I didn’t have to do it. That’s what I wanted to hear. I was going to do it, but I wanted it to be my decision. So much of my destiny had suddenly been wrested completely out of my control. I desperately needed to believe that this decision was mine. market to “escape“ volatility, you may take on an even bigger risk – the risk of losing some of the growth you’ll need to reach your goals. Consider this: If you had invested $10,000 in a package of stocks mimicking the S&P 500 in December 1979, your investment would have grown to more than $426,000 by December 2013. But if you had missed just the 10 best days of the market during that time, your $10,000 would only have grown to less than $206,000 – a difference of about $220,000, according to Ned Davis Research, a leading investment research organization. Staying invested over the long term can pay off. (Keep in mind, though, that the S&P 500 is an unmanaged index and isn’t meant to depict an actual investment. Also, as you’ve no doubt heard, past performance is not a guarantee of future results.) The sewage treatment center is located in a relatively isolated area, with a child care center and some condominiums nearby, but not much else. Pickle said another benefit from removing the hydrosulfide gas is to reduce corrosion to metals at the plant.

St. Lucie turns on lights for after school programs FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — St. Lucie Public Schools unites with other communities across the nation on Oct. 22 to turn the lights on for after-school programs and activities. During this rally for afterschool program awareness, more than 25 area after-school programs are expected to participate in the 16th annual Lights On After School. Two locations are earmarked for the rally in St. Lucie County
according to organizers Terrance Platt and Kimberly Roberts. The PALS Center in Fort Pierce and the Port St. Lucie Community Center in Port St. Lucie will open their doors from 4 to 7:30 PM in order for parents, students, and community members to become familiar with afterschool opportunities. Representatives from a host of organizations including library services, area churches, tutorial services, sports programs, mentoring services, service organizations, parks and recreation programs, and much more
will man booths in an expo-style setting. Students will perform, attendees will have opportunities to win door prizes, and hands-on activities will be available. Roberts said, “We want this to be a community event. We want everyone in our community to see this as an opportunity to showcase all the programs and activities in our community, because this can have a positive impact on our children.” Superintendent E. Wayne Gent agrees with after-school programs’ positive impact on stu-
dents. “Quality after-school programs refine students’ skills and broaden their perspectives on opportunities available to them,” said Gent. Peripheral Neuropathy: A Deadly Condition? If You’re Suffering With Peripheral Neuropathy This Might Be The Most Important Thing You Read All Year you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (see the special neuropathy severity examination at the end of this article).
We even see individuals whose neuropathy is so far advanced they are at risk of having their feet amputated. However, none of these are the reason neuropathy can be a deadly condition. The biggest risks from peripheral neuropathy are the balance problems and falls that this condition can cause.
Figure 1: Falls affect millions of seniors in the U.S. every year
You see, the nerves in your feet help send signals to your brain to maintain proper balance. When the nerves are damaged by neuropathy it is common to feel like you are off balance, or going to fall. Many of you reading this may have already fallen, and live in fear that your next fall may result in a fracture or concussion. Sadly, over 2.4 million seniors visit the emergency room each year due to falls, and nearly 23,000 die.
Figure 2: When these very small blood vessels become diseased they begin to shrivel up and the nerves begin to degenerate.
This damage that results in balance problems is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. As you can see in Figure 2, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems as well as, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms. To make matters worse, too many doctors simply prescribe medications which don’t fix the cause of the problem. Even worse, some of these drugs have side effects that include dizziness and loss of balance! There is now a facility right here in Port St. Lucie that offers
In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined. 1) What is the underlying cause? 2) How much nerve damage has been sustained? NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is likely nothing that we can do for you. 3) How much treatment will your condition require? The NASA developed treatment we use in our office is like watering a plant. This technology will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a plant and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper.
The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage there is hope! Dr. John Silva, D.C. at the Neuropathy Relief Center will do a Neuropathy Severity Examination for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing, and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy. Dr. Silva will be offering this Neuropathy Severity Examination to the first 12 callers who respond to this publication. After the first 12 callers, we will continue to schedule evaluations at the normal examination fee of $300. So don’t hesitate to act now! Call 772-429-8800 to make an appointment with Dr. Silva to determine if your peripheral neuropathy can be treated and your balance restored. While it may sound as if Zheng is all work, that’s not the case. “I play the violin and have been in the school orchestra since sixth grade,” he said. “I play the piano. I’m on the tennis team, and I’m involved with stuff at school, like the Math Club. I started the Physics Club and I’m

I take an hour and get my mind away.” Zheng hopes his success is an inspiration to others. “When I found out, I was really grateful to everyone in school, my teachers and administrators and the school district,” he said. “They supported and prepared me in all my classes. I hope it will serve as an inspiration and I hope we’ll be having more from our county in the future. It will be really good.”

The new clubhouse features elements of style throughout the building that reflect the PGA of America’s rich history. As a result, the PGA has relocated some notable trophies and artifacts that trace its nearly 100 years to the new “PGA Gallery” area of the PGA Golf Club Clubhouse. This is highlighted by a display of the major Championship trophies of golf, including the original Wanamaker Trophy, the prize for winning the PGA Championship. In addition, the Senior PGA Championship’s Alfred S. Bourne Trophy and the Vardon Trophy, with its iconic overlapped hands sculpture, are both prominently displayed. “This newly-renovated and expanded clubhouse signals a transformation for PGA Golf Club,” said PGA General Manager Jimmy Terry. “We now have a magnificent cornerstone to accompany our championship golf courses that will serve as a point of pride for our PGA members, guests and golfers from around the world to enjoy.” Phase one of clubhouse construction at PGA Golf Club was finalized in February, with renovations throughout the structure, chiefly to public areas. For example, the golf shop now features modern-design techniques that accentuate
its high ceiling. Its sales counter was moved to the room’s middle for a retail-center vibe, while elevated platforms display special apparel. The room offers a private members’ entrance, access to members-only lockers and a new fitting room. The dining room was converted into a high-end establishment, “The Taplow Pub,” named in honor of department store magnate Rodman Wanamaker’s informal business group nicknamed “The Taplow Club,” which proposed the idea to form the PGA in 1916. Cutting-edge audio and video components accentuate a room that seats more than 100 people. There are 15 televisions, with individualized programming for each booth. The adjacent “Captains’ Room” is a wine room for members and their guests that pays tribute to Ryder Cup Captains. Additionally, the nearby Wanamaker Room banquet area presents improved entrances, new seating areas and enhanced acoustics. Serving these facilities is an expanded kitchen, featuring a large pizza oven, and a new and improved menu. The just completed second phase of construction is highlighted by several new areas for PGA and PGA Golf Club members to enjoy including: •NINETEEN-SIXTEEN Bar &

ST. LUCIE WEST — Dan Cammarata is bringing Orangetheory Fitness to town. “We’ll be doing some soft openings in December,” he said. “We’ll have a launch party right after the first of the year.” At its last regular meeting — Monday, Sept. 28 — the Port St. Lucie City Council unanimously nodded to a special exception allowing Orangetheory to open at Cashmere Corners, the outdoor plaza at 870 S.W. St. Lucie West Blvd. Albertsons was the largest business at the plaza from 2000 to 2012. The loss of the store left a large vacancy at the plaza for three years. Earlier this year, Walmart got the needed nods from the city to open a Neighborhood Market at the location. Patricia Tobin, the city’s planning director, said Orangetheory is taking a 3,000-square-foot spot at Cashmere Corners. Cammarata, who lives in Hollywood, said when he scouted through Port St. Lucie for space it was obvious he’d want to be in St. Lucie West. “That’s really because we looked at the demographics,” Cammarata said. “You usually draw your people from five to six miles.” In other words, St. Lucie West and Tradition have a lot of health-conscious folks. Cammarata noted that LA Fitness was in Tradition and opted to place its second Port St. Lucie location just a few miles away in St. Lucie West. That location — 1367 St. Lucie West Blvd. — opened in 2014. Cammarata said not everyone

interested in health and fitness enjoy the same things. For example, some enjoy swimming but not running, or biking but not swimming. Others enjoy triathlons which combine the three. Because of that, Cammarata said, Orangetheory and LA Fitness are not really competitors, but aim at slightly different markets. LA Fitness, he said, aims for walkins — folks who want to go to the gym and work out. Orangetheory aims for those who enjoy guided group workouts. Orangetheory’s website explains that its varied classes are 60 minutes and based on getting heartrates to 84 percent or more of an individual’s maximum. That, the website reads, creates increased metabolic rates for 24 to 36 hours after workouts, which increases caloric consumption. In other words, folks lose weight faster. “I’m an avid user of the product as well,” Cammarata said. The 54-year-old said he became an Orangetheory customer then devotee after his daughter recommended it to him about 18 months ago. Cammarata said he’d been athletic much of his life, but had allowed his career and family responsibilities to distract him from maintaining fitness. Cammarata said he dropped 40 pounds and toned his muscles quickly with the Orangetheory’s group workouts. Now — “I’m running my best times in half marathons ever,” Cammarata said. The store will be partially opened during renovations with demonstration videos. Cammarata will soon start hiring staff. He expects to employ 15 part- and full-time workers. The closest Orangetheory is in Stuart.

ST. LUCIE WEST — The 17 boys and young men ages 7-20 who make up Les Petits Chanteurs de Nogent-sur-Marne, are globe-trotters. The choir gives participants the opportunity to travel the world and see different cultures. The choir, formerly known as Les Moineaux, has been in existence for 60 years and regularly performs works by Handel, Mozart and Vivaldi. Twelve members of Les Petits Chanteurs return to Florida for several stops in 2015. They will come to St. Bernadette Catholic Church in St. Lucie West Oct. 28. Tom Bold, organist and music director at the church, spoke about why the group is such a favorite. “They have been here a number of times,” he said. “They pre-date me. They were guests of the parish before I came and before we built the new church. Originally, the parish was in trailers. The director (of the group) at the time contacted St. Bernadette, because of the name. They thought there was a French connection. The parish invited them, but there was no space. The concert was at St. Lucie Catholic Church because we didn’t have the space.” When the new church was built, the director contacted Bold. He was not familiar with the group, but he found a file and looked at what they had done. They were invited back and have performed at the church three times. Last year, director Francois Olivier left the group at home and brought a colleague to St. Bernadette for an organ concert. Olivier also has the prestigious position of Titular of

Taplow Pub at PGA launches new menu Bruno Moore
FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE WEST — Taplow Pub at PGA Golf Club in St. Lucie West is the club’s newest food service addition. Their new menu, launched Oct. 5, boasts an eclectic menu that fuses American Style pub food with home-style recipes and non-traditional addons (Strawberry Bacon Burger anyone?) that make for one of the most diverse menus on the Treasure Coast. Located at PGA’s clubhouse at 1916 Perfect Drive, the pub has all the creature comforts of a members’ only club at prices you’d expect to pay at most mid-level family dining restaurants around town. The most expensive item on the menu is the Blackened Pork Rib Eye for $22. By all means, start with an appetizer. The choices are many and just about every one is a taste adventure. The night started with Cola Braised Brisket Tacos, Sausage Rolls and Loaded Nachos. The braised brisket on the tacos was cola infused and included fruity bites of grilled
pineapple, the crunch of candied walnuts and crispness of Asian slaw. This dish will end up being a pub favorite. The Sausage Bites, wrapped in flaky puffed pastry like country club versions of Pigs in a Blanket, are mildly seasoned and served with a house made pub sauce that adds just the right amount of zest. Loaded Nachos, piled high with bacon, chili and all the fixings make for a meal by themselves. In fact, all the appetizers are perfect as stand-alone meals. The two entrees sampled were Homestyle Meatloaf and the Strawberry Bacon Burger. The burger arrived on a hardwood carving board with a PGA branded bun and hand sliced sweet potatoes that tasted like they were out of a magazine ad. Candied bacon and strawberry puree added a sweetness that was unusual to the palate but appealing. The Homestyle Meatloaf, a hard entrée to make popular, tasted homemade, was presented as a fanciful chef creation and went home in a to-go box for the next day’s breakfast. The mark of a

The boys travel in October for a good reason. “October is vacation in France,” Bold said. “They were looking to travel again and they like to come here because it’s warm.” The group lives together and studies lessons and music in a communal setting. “The emphasis is on singing and travel,” Bold said. “They have a close bond. The boys can be like family, which is both good and bad. It’s an interesting dynamic. They love to travel and they love to come here. It’s interesting when you watch Francois work with the boys. He’s ‘papa.’” For the concert, the group will

Fred Caimotto out and cast back to the shoreline. What used to be dry sand now has enough water for a slot sized snook to forage in. The new Monster 3X paddle tail bait will not only produce but is made of a strong plastic so the tails will hold up to pecking bites from the pinfish and puffers. Use it on a 1/8th ounce jig head and pop it through the grass. Offshore has been quiet as of late due to a lack of anglers and big seas. Those that have been making the venture out have been rewarded. Four hundred feet has been the depth to find any actual blue water and some have been reaching the 1,500foot mark. Nice sized dolphin from the 820-pound class feeding under the patches of sargasm (a brownish, pungent seaweed). Trolled ballyhoo will bring them out; just make sure you have some pitch rods ready for the fish that come to the boat. Keep in mind those calm stretches of summer are over and the conditions can deteriorate quickly. If you plan on making that long run make sure you do just that — plan. Outgoing tides, westerly winds and a big ground swell can make any inlet from Jupiter north a very dangerous one. Bottom fishing at locations like the Sand Pile and Loran tower have produced a nice variety of snapper including muttons, mangroves, lanes and yellowtail. Cut sardines and

t has been a much better week to be a surfer than a surf angler. Large swells over the last week in result of passing hurricane, Joaquin have been great for surfing, but not so much for fishing on the beach. What would have continued to be spectacular fishing from the sand has been rather difficult since the seas picked up. Usually, the first northeast breeze and swell will send the mullet south. When the seas subside look for bluefish, jacks, spanish mackerel, and tarpon. With the seas down and the turbidity level still up, throw a two ounce spoon or a big chrome top water plug to get a little extra attention. Look to the inlets for a great mangrove snapper fishing, particularly the Ft. Pierce inlet. With depths of 25 feet plus, it is a great location to catch some quality fish. Size live shrimp, finger mullet, pinfish, mojarras and small pilchards make excellent bait. Use a knocker rig with a 1- 3-ounce egg sinker and a 3-foot piece of 20- to 40-pound fluorocarbon leader; some of the snapper we saw this week were pushing the six pound mark so leave the light tackle at home. Inshore fishing has been at its best in the Indian River with what some are saying is our best mullet run in years. Snook fishing around local bridges has been excellent. Live baits, Flair hawks, Bomber Windcheaters, Mirrolure Top Dogs and the new 4-inch Spooltek swim baits have been doing some damage claiming many a keeper fish. Always throw up into the tide and work the bait back through the shadow line at a natural speed. Shrimp and cut bait will catch the drum and sheepshead hanging on the pilings. Drop your bait down and let the tide push it underneath the structure. Trout fishing has been on an uptick, along with quite a few redfish along the west side docks, including a 42 inch fish caught this past week on a DOA gold/ glow shrimp. Big tides over the last month have made more areas accessible for the fish. Cast along the docks with a live shrimp on a jig head and bounce them along the pilings. If you’re a wader, walk

From a smoky 1920’s Speakeasy to the Bowery of the 1930’s, from a World War II USO to a 1950’s Manhattan supper club, Swinging on a Star perfectly weaves various settings and scenes with some of the most popular songs of a generation. The journey also showcases music from the “Road Movies” starring Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Songs include: “Road to Morocco,” “Going My Way,” “Moonlight Becomes You,” “Swinging on a Star,” and many more.

ROCKSTAR from page B12 This year’s theme is Party Like a Rock Star! The Steak & Stake Dinner has become the single largest fundraising event of the year for the club. Over the past eight years, the community has come together to support this great event and the club members. The money generated plays an important role in the daily success of the organization. The committee has been working hard to create a memorable evening. There will be an exciting live auction with an incredible list of items for people to bid on. The evening will include a delicious steak dinner provided by Outback Steakhouse, entertainment and a very special entrance by club members. For those not familiar with the Boys & Girls Club, it’s a great opportunity to learn about it and interact with some of the members. Tricia Lee and Richard Del Toro are co-chairs of the event. “They have done an incredible job of getting the community involved,” stated Will Armstead, Interim CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs. “The theme, auction items, decorations and most importantly, the business partners are outstanding. It will be a night to remember.” Members of the Boys & Girls Clubs will be seated at each
table to interact with the guests throughout the event. For ticket or sponsorship information or to reserve your table, call (772) 460-9918 and take a stake in a child’s life. Lee Plastic Surgery and Laser Center is the title sponsor of the 8th Annual Steak & Stake Dinner. Their offices are located at 525 NW Lake Whitney Place in St. Lucie West and 210 Jupiter Lakes Blvd., Jupiter. The Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing youth with a world class Boys & Girls Club experience, assuring that success is within reach for every young person who walks through our doors, and that every club member graduates high school with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship and living healthy lifestyles. ST. LUCIE WEST — Local Senior PGA Pro Peter Oakley, winner of the 2004 British Senior Open at Royal Port Rush Golf Club, in Northern Ireland, and Jerry Impellitterre, former PGA New York sectional teacher of the year and former PGA South Florida Senior Open champion, are used to competing on a regular basis. Now, however, they are joining forces with other South Florida PGA Pros for a good cause. Together they’ll headline an event on Nov. 7th at the beautiful Miles Grant Country Club in Stuart. According to Jerry, “This will be the second year for the event. Last year the golf course, the facility and the weather were perfect. We were able to raise a lot of money for two local charities, the Grace Place outreach and Care Net, while giving all participants a good time and a chance to play with a PGA Pro.”
Peter Oakley adds, “We’ve put Jerry in charge of the weather again this year, so it should be fine. But seriously, for a very reasonable fee local golfers get the chance to play a course they may have not played, with a Pro in their foursome. We were able to raise quite a bit of money last year, and this year’s event should be even bigger and better.” The tournament committee is currently accepting registration for: individual golfers, $89, and made-up foursomes, $340. It still has some availability for local businesses wishing to sponsor a hole. The committee has promised that prize packages for division winners will exceed those of last year. Interested golfers and sponsors can contact committee members Water and Janice Borowski at (772) 781-0087 or wjborow@hotmail.com as well as Tom Fischer at (772)370-1098 or tom-fischer@ att.net

OF ST. LUCIE COUNTY
TREASURE COAST — Would you like to win $20,000? John Carroll High School is once again hosting its popular Mega Drawing this year! Tickets are on sale for $50 each or 3 for $100. The drawing is a 50/50 style, with the winner taking half of the collected proceeds up to $20,000. The winning ticket will be pulled during halftime of the John Carroll Open House/football game on Friday, October 23. You need not be present to win, but you will not want to miss the excitement of having your ticket selected in person. “Recognizing the need to provide more financial assistance than ever before, we have thoughtfully designed this drawing to raise funds for our tuition assistance programs. This is an ideal opportunity for the community to support quality Catholic education on the Treasure Coast,” remarked
Principal Ben Hopper. Tickets can be purchased by completing the online “Ticket Order Form,” found on www.JohnCarrollHigh.com, through your student’s school account, or on campus. More than $40,000 was raised in the 2014 Mega Drawing, and those proceeds directly impacted our tuition assistance programs. We are confident that with your support the 2015 Mega Drawing will be a huge success for John Carroll and its students. All ticket sales should be completed by Friday, October 16th and returned to the school with ticket stub and payment. For additional information, please visit www.JohnCarrollHigh.com. John Carroll High School, a non-profit 501(c)3 status school has students, both Catholic and non-Catholic, from St. Lucie, Indian River, and Martin counties. For more information, please visit www.JohnCarrollHigh.com, visit our Facebook page, or call 772464-5200.
