WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Barack Obama was sent an official invitation last week to tour
the discharge-ravaged Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie rivers. U.S. Reps. Patrick Murphy, D-Jupiter, and Trey Radel, R-Fort Myers drafted the letter on behalf of millions of Floridian families negatively affected by the Army Corps of Engineers’ dis-
charges of freshwater from Lake Okeechobee, making good on a promise the pair made during an Oct. 3 Indian River Lagoon congressional briefing to persuade the president to see the toxic

TRADITION — If flashing bare hairy legs and a pair of red stiletto heels will help end domestic and sexual violence, men on the Treasure Coast were up for the challenge. Hundreds of local men comfortable with their masculinity did just that during SafeSpace’s fourth annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, held Oct. 12 in Tradition Square. The internationally renowned event aimed to raise awareness about domestic violence with the hope of ending

the senseless brutality that claims the lives of four women every day in the U.S. The light-hearted walk with a heavy message garnered cheers and laughs from women clad in flats and sneakers. Men limping and tiptoeing through the cobblestone streets of Tradition was a sight to behold. “The more swagger you have, the easier it is,” St. Lucie County tax collector Chris Craft smiled as he strutted in 4-inch-high pumps. Craft and his fellow walkers said they gained a greater appreciation of the pains women must endure on a daily basis.

WEST PALM BEACH — After a Monday morning aerial tour of the Treasure Coast’s toxic waterways, U.S. House of Representatives Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said a presidential visit is in order. “I think it will be a useful visit for the president to visit South Florida,” Hoyer said from a private terminal at Palm Beach International airport. “South Florida is a very dynamic part of our country, a lot of people (live) here and I will suggest to the president and to Mr. McDonough, his chief of staff, that when they next come to Florida that they take a half an hour (tour) … to get a sense of the magnitude of the challenge and the immediacy of the challenge and the need to act.” Hoyer toured the area with U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Jupiter, in a South Florida Water Man-

HOYER from page 4 agement helicopter. The flyover included the St. Lucie Inlet, Lake Okeechobee, C-44 and the Herbert Hoover Dike. Hoyer, who is dealing with similar pollution problems in the Chesapeake Bay in his home district, expressed dismay at the sight of the dark and dirty plume of water that has infiltrated the Treasure Coast. “If you look at the Susquehanna River up my way, there’s a plume coming out of there. It’s a very similar kind of thing,” Hoyer said. “You know that that plume is bad news. Bad news for the Chesapeake Bay, bad news for (Treasure Coast) residents and for the fish, for recreation, for all the things that make Florida such a wonderful asset to our country.” “Florida is a national resource, the Everglades a national resource, and so it’s incumbent upon us at the federal level to work in partnership with states and localities,” Hoyer said. “One of the critical things is having a member who will bring the local problem, which I don’t see every day, to the attention of federal officials and very frankly, Patrick Murphy has been extraordinarily successful in doing that. That’s why I’m here.” Hoyer pledged to share the Treasure Coast’s plight with his colleagues on Capitol Hill. “Patrick’s given me this opportunity to come down here and see the vastness of the challenge that confronts South Florida,” Hoyer said. “It’s very important so that when I go back I talk to my colleagues, I talk to the leadership on both sides of the aisle because this is not a partisan problem,
this is not a Republican problem or a Democratic problem, this is a Floridian’s problem, an American’s problem.” With the rainy season coming to a close later this month, now is not the time to waiver in the fight for clean water, Murphy said. “We can’t lose sight of this just because we’re entering the dry season. Next year there will be another rainy season and we could have the same issues again,” Murphy said. “So we can’t take our foot off the gas. We’ve got to keep this drumbeat going in Congress and ensure everyone knows how important projects like CERP and CEPP and C-44 (are).” “It’s not going to happen overnight. There’s no silver bullet to solve this, but piece by piece, if we look at all these solutions, whether it’s water farming, fixing the dike, whether it’s (improving) C-44 (canal), we’ll be able to make a difference and help out water quality and our local environment,” he said. Each fix will require federal funding, both said. “It’s all about funding now and getting these projects approved and that’s why it’s important we had Congressman Hoyer down here to see it firsthand,” Murphy said. “Like I told you before, it’s about educating the Congress.” One source of funding, Hoyer said, is the Water Resource and Development Act, which recently passed in the Senate. It includes millions for Everglades restoration. “Unfortunately my Republican colleagues have not brought it to the floor,” Hoyer said. “We can’t pass it if they don’t bring it to the floor. In my view, it will pass.”

Patrick Murphy snapped the photograph on Oct. 14 during an aerial tour of the troubled waters with U.S. House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md. Martin County Commissioner Sarah Heard greeted the lawmakers after they disembarked from their hour-long tour. Heard, a Republican, commended the Democrats for their efforts on behalf of the waterways. “Whoever is willing to step up and get serious about ecosystem restoration has my support and the support of most residents in the county,” Heard said. “We have to make this a priority and we have to get serious about enforcing pollution limits and we have to recognize that this is a
state and federal partnership.” She also called for more federal support. “The state has done a remarkable job acquiring many of the lands necessary for Everglades restoration. It’s time for the federal government to step up and do their part,” Heard said. “Martin County alone of the 16 counties in the South Florida Water Management District has contributed a gift of $75 million in order to implement Everglades restoration projects.”

an indelible impression on the largest and most powerful lawmakers in the nation. In a poignant moment in the hallway of the Rayburn House office building, Celia approached U.S. House of Representatives Minority Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to show the veteran congresswoman just how grim conditions on the St. Lucie River have become. Celia presented Pelosi with a once vibrant oyster that would clean up to 50 gallons of river water per day to keep the waterway in pristine shape. It is now dry, cracked and dead. “I’m going to keep this on my desk,” Pelosi promised as she embraced Celia. Pelosi, who attended the hearing, hosted by Reps. Patrick Murphy, D-Jupiter, and Trey Radel, R-Fort Myers, said the close to 200 Treasure Coast “River Warriors” caught her attention. “It’s really important to come the distance that these people came to know how important their
mobilization of coming is and that they will be heard. We appreciate and understand the value of what they’ve come here to do.” The plight facing the lagoon, which has been inundated with dirty freshwater from Army Corps discharges for months now, is not just a Florida problem, Pelosi said. “This is not even an issue. It’s a value. It’s about protecting this beautiful God given planet, God’s creation,” Pelosi said. “…It really is a national and global issue in terms of the environmental impact.” Pelosi also praised Murphy for his tireless work to save the lagoon. “He’s a very talented new member committed to working in a bipartisan way for the good of his community,” Pelosi said. “This is a big challenge that he had to face almost immediately and he’s risen to the occasion.” Celia’s mother, K.C. Traylor, was proud of her young daughter who

waterways. Both are still awaiting a presidential response. “During our discussion, which included the support of Minority Leader Pelosi, Minority Whip Hoyer, Chairman Bill Shuster and a majority of the Florida delegation, it became apparent that a visit by you to the affected areas may be the only way to give our neighbors along the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie Rivers confidence that you intend to deliver on the federal government’s Everglades restoration promises,” the letter, dated Oct. 8 states. Murphy and Radel gave Obama a glimpse into how long the devastation has endured, writing the issue transcends party lines. “We invite you and members of your administration to tour impacted areas and see how this environmental crisis, decades in the making, is devastating our families, neighbors, and communities,” both wrote. “Your administration’s attention to environmental issues leaves us with no doubt that once you bear witness to the destruction of our once thriving waterways you will be all-in with our efforts to prioritize real solutions.” “Even though we lack seniority, we cannot sit back and wait our turn to protect our communities,”

OBAMA from page 8 Murphy said. The congressman is hopeful Obama will treat the toxic water as a priority. “If we are chosen, I think we’ll have a much better chance of getting that funding going forward for projects like C-44, C-43 (canals) or the Tamiami Trail, strengthening the Herbert Hoover Dike. Those are all key projects.” Murphy also included several hand-written letters from area students. “I am very terrified to hear about the toxic algae that is going on at the Indian River Lagoon, in
Stuart, Florida and this is upsetting to me,” Janessa Kloorfain, a fourth-grade student at J.D. Parker School of Science and Technology in Martin County wrote. “I would like for you to come to Florida and help and clean up the toxic algae.” Janessa’s fourth grade classmate, Wilberto Lago, highlighted the effects the billions of gallons of discharges have had on wildlife. “I am disappointed because Lake Okeechobee has toxic algae and all the sea creatures are dying and people are getting sick,” Wilberto wrote. “Manatees could get sick and even die.”
Humans have been gravely affected as well, he wrote. “People won’t be able to eat fish because we could eat infected fish … we won’t be able to swim in the water.” Murphy said the inclusion of student letters will hopefully strike a chord with the president. “I wanted to include the students because that’s why we’re doing this. It’s all about the future,” Murphy said. “A big part, at least for me, why I care so much about the environment is not only do I enjoy it, but I want it to be there and I want my children and grandchildren to be able to enjoy it as did I growing up.”

approached Pelosi amid a media crush. “We just happened to be out in the hallway when (Pelosi) came out. I feel very honored that we can actually highlight (this problem.) This needs to be fixed for these kids,” Traylor said. “We need every congressman and congresswoman, Republicans and Democrats, to fix this for the kids so they’re not up here in 40 years still asking for the discharges to stop.” Traylor said her daughter’s oysters are physical proof of the destruction the discharges are causing. “She brought these today as a symbol of what we’re losing,” Traylor said. Shortly after the meeting’s conclusion, Celia walked the yard of the Capitol Building, chanting, “Save the river” and “When are you going to stop this?” The Traylors have called Palm City home for nearly Celia’s lifespan. They previously lived in Michigan, where K.C. WASHINGTON, D.C. — Port St. Lucie resident Nyla Pipes is the Indian River Lagoon’s Erin Brockovich. Both are gutsy blonds, devoted mothers, not easily intimidated by governmental forces and fierce fighters for environmental issues. All of the sweat and tears Pipes has poured into the polluted lagoon paid off on Oct. 3 when she stood next to U.S. Rep. Patrick
Murphy, D-Jupiter, on Capitol Hill during a rally to demand an end to Lake Okeechobee discharges and a solution to clean up the near dead waterway. “The biggest thing we’re going to accomplish this time is we’re going to open their eyes and maybe getting them coming to the table with us, not as lawmakers, but as human beings, so that we can all discuss this and really come up with some plans,” Pipes, 35, said a week before departing for Washington, D.C., to attend a congressional hearing on the la-

The History of Halloween Brought to you by
Once upon a time a man called Stingy Jack invited the devil to have a drink with him. Jack, who lived up to his Moniker, did not want to spend money so he persuaded the devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack could use to pay. The devil agreed but instead of buying the drinks Jack decided to keep the money. He put it deep down inside his pocket beside a silver cross which kept the devil from turning back to his original form. Eventually Jack decided to let the devil go as long as he promised not to bother Jack for one more year and if Jack died the devil would not claim his soul. A year later Jack convinced the devil to climb a tree for a piece of fruit, while the devil was picking the fruit Jack carved a cross in the tree bark which prevented the devil from climbing down until the devil promised Jack that he wouldn’t bother him for 10 more years. When Jack died God wouldn’t allow him into heaven and the devil, upset by the tricks that jack had played on him but keeping his word not to claim his soul would not let Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved turnip and has wandered the earth with it ever since. The Irish call this ghostly figure Jack of the lantern. Eventually it was shortened to the term that we use today Jack-O’-Lantern. Folks in Ireland and Scotland started carving their own versions of Jack’s lanterns by etching scary faces into turnips or potatoes and setting them near the windows and the doors to scare away Stingy Jack and other evil spirit. When they emigrated to America the tradition came with them. They realize that pumpkins were native to our country and that they made perfect Jack-O’-Lanterns and that’s why we carve pumpkins to this very day.

“It’s not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination,” Craft said. Last year, 1,424 incidents of domestic violence and two domestic violence-related murders took place in St. Lucie County alone, Tracy Levy, director of development for SafeSpace, said. “That’s almost four domestic violence incidents each day here in our local area,” Levy said. SafeSpace is a nonprofit organization that provides resources and shelter to abused women on the Treasure Coast. “We help victims become survivors,” Levy said. SafeSpace has two 24 bedroom shelters in St. Lucie and Indian River counties and also services Martin County women in dire need. The nonprofit, which is a United Way organization, serves approximately 1,000 women a year. “Today I’m happy to report there are 40 women and children safe in our shelters thanks to the generosity and support of the communities we serve,” Levy said. The organization also provides educational resources for women ready to make an escape from their abusers, counseling and empowerment skills. It is the premiere agency for abused women with nowhere else to turn. It is estimated the Tradition walk garnered approximately $15,000. “Why help SafeSpace? Because the abusers are deadly serious,” Levy said. “And we all need to be just as serious about stopping them from doing any more harm to anyone in our community.” Craft, who attended with a team of workers from his office, said he’ll spread the message of anti-violence to anyone who will listen. “It’s largely a silent crime that so many people don’t talk about and having people come out like this to show that they understand and they want to fight against this domestic abuse is unbelievable,” Craft said. Craft said he teaches his daughter about violence and how

to avoid it. “From a father’s perspective, that’s my pride and joy,” Craft said. “I couldn’t imagine anyone ever wanting to hurt her. We teach her to be strong and have a good judge of character.” St. Lucie County Commissioner Kim Johnson said actions sometimes speak louder than words. “I try to lead by example. One thing that I’ve done is never put my hands on any woman and so (my children) know that’s a no-no, because they’ve never seen me do it and they’ve never seen their mother touch me as well,” Johnson said. Former State Rep. Adam Fetterman brought along his young son, Noah. “Noah knows how we’re supposed to treat each other,” Fetterman said. “We all treat each other equally and with respect. You’re never too young to learn that lesson.” “Real men don’t hit women. It’s very simple,” Fetterman added. Port St. Lucie Mayor JoAnn Faiella commended the men for taking a stand against the silent killer. “It’s an extraordinary event. Yes, it was comical watching the men, but there’s a meaning behind this ... we can’t forget about the statistics. Domestic violence happens every single day,” Faiella said. Women who need help can call the SafeSpace hotline at (800) 5001119. The line is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. For more information on SafeSpace, visit www.safespacefl.org

PIPES from page 12 goon hosted by Murphy and U.S. Rep. Trey Radel, R-Fort Myers. More than 20 members of the House and Senate showed up to the Oct. 3 briefing. Each one pledged their support of solutions to fix the lagoon. The long list included U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. “For the first time, I think we really are slowly but surely getting the information into our lawmakers’ hands in a way that they’re starting to understand,” Pipes said. Pipes and close to 200 fellow “River Warriors” raised $8,000 to make the trip. Some trekked by bus, others flew. The river advocates linked up on social media sites several months ago and quickly became a grassroots force to be reckoned with. To date, they’ve mobilized dozens of rallies attended by more than 7,000 Treasure Coast residents. They speak to students and the elderly about the toxic waterways. They’ve also held fundraisers to help environmental organizations. “It’s sunup to sundown and it’s a lot of communication. People are tired and they’re working very hard,” Pipes said of the effort. “There’s so much planning and so many phone calls to our lawmakers and each other.” Sometimes the mother of two becomes weary, but won’t stop because clean water is too precious a resource to let dry up. “I moved clear across this country and I didn’t move here to not be able to touch my water. So I’m driven,” Pipes said. “I feel so deeply connected to the water that I couldn’t imagine Florida without it and I’m afraid that’s where we’re headed. We have poisonous bacteria killing people in our water in this state and that is not OK.” “I get very mad (and experience) anger and frustration. Tears sometimes,” the Washington state native said. “I’m not going to lie, I’ve cried because I’ve seen
June with a stranger at a Martin County beach. “Don’t touch the water. The water is filthy, it’s dirty, it’s disgusting,” a beach-goer said. “I said, ‘Oh my God. How could that be?’” Sanclemente said. Although Pipes and Sanclemente live several miles away from the river, they encourage other inland residents in areas like St. Lucie West and Tradition, to join their efforts for the sake of the economy and future generations. “For my children I need to leave behind knowledge and education for them,” Sanclemente said. “I want to leave behind a clean world.” Sanclemente, who traveled to Staff photo by Nicole Rodriguez Neighbors Nyla Pipes and Maria Sanclemente held a charity car wash on Sept. 29 in Port St. Lucie to fund their trip to a Washington, D.C., hearing on the Indian River Lagoon’s deteriorating health. Both women braved the midday heat to wave signs to alert motorists of the cause. it so much more beautiful than what it is.” Pipes recalls sailing days when dolphins would frolic in the clean water. These memories and her children’s future fuel her on. “It’s so hurtful to watch them do that in the dirty water,” Pipes said of the marine life. “I hurt for our river.” Many times dishes in the Pipes household pile up while she dredges on for the river. Her children and husband understand the battle and back her all the way, Pipes said. “My family has taken a little bit of a toll. My daughter was in the backseat one day saying, ‘Save our river! Save our river!’ all the way down U.S. 1,” Pipes said. “That’s when I really realized I have a very supportive family.” Pipes’s friend and neighbor Maria Sanclemente, 33, also joined the fight. “Any spare minute off, I devote it to this,” Sanclemente, a mother of two said. Sanclemente decided to take a stand after encouragement from Pipes and a chance encounter in
Capitol Hill to have her voice heard, said she will stop at nothing to save the St. Lucie River. “If we have to swim across the ocean or go anywhere in the country that we have to, we will do what we need to do,” she said. She believes the congressional hearing was a major milestone in the fight for clean water. “The main thing is that they know that we’re making noise,” Sanclemente said. “We’re not just making noise in front of our home. We’re not just making noise in the corner of the highway on some bridge somewhere. We’re making noise where it matters.”

Drama explores complex issues Shelley Koppel Staff writer
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
FORT PIERCE — John Steinbeck’s novella, “Of Mice and Men,” is on the American Library Association’s list of the most challenged books of the 21st century. The tragic story of two migrant workers who moved around seeking work during the Great Depression deals with complex issues of racism, disabilities, the power of friendship and death. Students of the performing

arts program at Indian River State College will present the play, adapted from his novella by Steinbeck, on Oct. 31-Nov. 2. David Moberg, head of the performing and visual arts department at IRSC, said this play is a favorite. “I have always really loved this play,” he said. “I did it 12-15 years ago and it was a fantastic experience. I came across my (copy of) the script and I thought about my students and said, ‘I’ve got the right combo.’”

While the play does deal with social issues, Moberg finds a different message. “It has deep things, but they’re all masked by a wonderful friendship,” he said. “That’s what the play is about. When the friendship disintegrates and you ask ‘Why,’ these other things come into play. It’s a chain of unfortunate events that leads to tragedy.” Moberg is himself a playwright and he can appreciate the artistry of Steinbeck’s work. “The story is so tightly wound,” he said. “He’s done such an incredible job of foreshadowing. Nothing is wasted; I love that as an artist.” Moberg said that his students enjoy the work. “They’re fascinated by it,” he said. “We’re focusing on the humanity of the characters and why the character is in the story, what brought them to that time and place. They’ve been researching the time and place.” One of the reasons the novella has been controversial is the use of offensive language, including a term for African-Americans that is unacceptable today. Moberg has changed the word to one both the audience and his students are comfortable with. It is an artistic decision and not one of

The goal of the theater is to communicate an experience. If you fail, you fail as an artist.” Moberg said that students today are not comfortable with racist and demeaning language and don’t want to use the words. “They represent something they don’t like,” he said. “There’s an openness and acceptance.” The cast includes Michael Edward Hurst as Lenny, Austin Peer as George, Justin Valine as The Boss, Shane O’Neil as Curley, Kaitlynn Torres as Curley’s wife; James Russell as Crooks, James King as Candy, Chris Harris as Slim, Brennan Monaco as Carlson and James Dangler as Whit.
