Digital Domain owner emails not taken seriously by city

Perfect pumpkin fit

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — In emails obtained by Your Voice Weekly, former Digital Domain CEO, John Textor, reached out to high ranking officials within the city of Port St. Lucie. It was Textor’s attempt to work out the financial issues surrounding the studio and either buy it or pay off the city’s debt. According to Textor, those offers were never acknowledged by the city nor were the public notified of any offers. Textor says his offers were legitimate and he had the financial backing to make good on the offer. The emails, the bulk of which were sent between April 24 and May 11, 2015 outlined several proposals Textor made to the Port St. Lucie city council to lease and purchase the Digital Domain studios. In a press release issued by Textor, May 11, he said he had a plan; “(for) Textor affiliated busi-

for Compost USA of the Treasure Coast. The County Commission will, for the third time, consider a conditional-use permit for a proposed composting facility on Shinn Road, just west of Port St. Lucie’s northern side. If the commission gives its nod, the company would have state permitting processes to go through. People in PGA Village and Tradition want the commission to flush it now.

Carol Anderson, co-chair of the PGA Village Compost USA Opposition Committee, said the proposed facility would be barely two miles from the development with wells, and many residents are concerned about their water. She said the committee will quantify its concerns to the commission with hard environmental facts at the meeting.

TRADITION — Tradition Medical Center groundbreaking took place on Wednesday, Oct. 21 and the expansion is under way. “Since we’re adding three floors, it makes one wonder why it’s called a groundbreaking?” John Loewenberg, the chairman of

Martin Health System’s board of directors, joked. Loewenberg proposed instead to call the ceremony a roof-breaking. Whichever it is, Martin Health System is adding 170,000 square feet to the hospital at 10000 S.W. Innovation Way. Loewenberg said there’s abundant evidence the expansion is needed. He said the hospital hit near capacity less than a week after it opened in 2013.

“It’s been full most of the time since then,” he said. Port St. Lucie’s mayor, Greg Oravec, said Tradition Medical Center has been a shining success in an area spotted by failures, such as the forced closure of the Vaccine & Gene Therapy Institute of Florida, which is visible from the hospital. VGTI is turning over assets to the City of Port St. Lucie, its largest creditor, as litigation continues. The city was

also left holding Tradition Studios after Digital Domain collapsed. It recently sold the building for $13 million to Christ Fellowship. Oravec urged groundbreaking attendees to remind people that while business failures gain headlines, Tradition Medical Center has outperformed expectations with little fanfare. ST. LUCIE WEST — St. Lucie West might lose one of its largest employers, but the City Council sees big benefits. At its last regular meeting — Monday, Oct. 27 — the council agreed to pursue selling a building the city purchased in August to EMD Holdings which intends to lease it to Teleperformance USA. “It’s not a real estate transaction; it’s economic development,” Mayor Greg Oravec said at the meeting. The building at 10400 S. U.S. Highway 1 was the Liberty Medical call center, until it closed last year during a company bankruptcy. Liberty Medical was one of Port St. Lucie’s largest employers with about 1,200 workers. That was followed earlier this year by QVC announcing it, too, is closing its call center in Port St. Lucie. QVC has about 800 workers and will complete its closure

PORT ST. LUCIE — Even if the original version of City Center is never built in its entirety, Fred Cook has ensured that the initial vision will be able to be viewed for many years to come. The 92-year-old Port St. Lucie resident constructed a scale model version of the 2005 conceptual plan for City Center that was unveiled Oct. 22 at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center. The 10-foot by 10-foot table project, which took nearly a year to complete, is now

displayed in that building’s lobby. According to Cook, every half inch is the equivalent of 10 feet. In addition to the current Civic Center, staging area and parking garage, the model remains true to the earliest blueprint, which also features office space, restaurants, retail space, residential space as well as additional parking garages. Cook, who has made both ship and airplane models for more than 50 years, said he was contacted by Assistant City Manager Daniel Holbrook regarding the project. “He asked if I thought I could do

it. And I told him I would give it a shot,” said Cook. “I felt proud that he suggested I try. I told him not to expect a miracle. So my wife gave me two-thirds of the dining room table.” Cook, who has been married to his wife, Claire, since 1948, stated that the Civic Center building, which consists of approximately a dozen segments, made separately and glued together, was the first section completed. It is made out of balsa wood while the remainder of the project is made of different thicknesses of poster board. He hand painted the model himself and kept true to the color schemes. “She was right on top of me to make sure that I quit at 9 p.m. (each night). Sometimes I quit at 10…but that was seldom. There were some days I didn’t work on it at all.” Cook was born in 1923 and raised in Long Island. He served in the United States Navy for five years (1940-1945) and got a degree in architecture before getting a job at Pratt-Whitney in East Hartford, Connecticut, which he held for 38 years. He was transferred to the West Palm Beach office and moved to Port St. Lucie in 1986. They live in the same home today that they moved into back then. This isn’t the first opportunity Cook has had to show off his craftsmanship for the city. He has donated other scale models over the years. He made a scale model of City Hall that was displayed in the front lobby as well as a “prop” cake for the City’s 50th Anniversary celebration. He visits City Hall quite often meeting with staff and sharing ideas

he has for improving the city. For example, he’s been lobbying for an ice skating rink to be built in the city for several years. After an unsuccessful attempt running for City Council in 1990, Cook was appointed to the Planning and Zoning Board, where as he puts it, “they retired me in 1999 (at age 76).” He has also been on other local boards and is involved with his church. Cook, who has two sons with Claire, said he has greatly enjoyed his “30-year situation” with the city. “My wife tells me to go for it all the time,” said Cook. “That’s why I have stayed involved in so many city projects and have been attracted to a number of different committees and boards.” City Center is a public/private partnership and funded by the City of Port St. Lucie and the Community Redevelopment Agency. The City Center model will encourage citizen initiative and allow the public to see firsthand the vision for that specific land area, located on the southeast corner of U.S.1 and Walton Road. “This model is a tool that’s going to help us see development for the city,” said Holbrook. “It’s about ownership, self-promotion and grass roots. This is the public’s project. They wanted it and they helped create it. It’s still not complete but we still have to keep going until it’s realized.” According to Bridget Kean, Community Redevelopment Agency Director, “There are challenges, but this project is a priority for the Community Redevelopment Agency and the city to create an activity center in eastern Port St. Lucie.”

MEDICAL from page A3 become “champions” of the news. “As champions, let’s not run from the truth, but let’s celebrate success when it happens,” Oravec said at the groundbreaking ceremony. The mayor added that there are plans for building up to 40,000 homes west of the Ronald Reagan Turnpike, making the hospital not just a shining success now, but a community necessity in the future. “That’s a whole other city,” the mayor said. The medical center opened in December, 2013. It’s had 9,000 admissions, 4,000 surgeries, more than 2,200 births, and 53,000 emergency-room visits. The new construction will raise the building to nine stories and add 90 patient rooms. Additionally, the construction will add an 18-bed area for extended emergency-room visits that need protracted observation, but not hospital admission. The expansion will add about 400 workers to the hospital, which will be about $22 million in additional payroll. Construction will start by early 2016 and be completed by 2018. “Who’s ready to double the size of the hospital?” Oravec asked, getting applause. “Anybody?”

“Because patient care should always come first”

by March next year. But things are much different at Teleperformance, a company representative told the council at its meeting. She said the company has outgrown its office at 500 N.W. University Blvd. “We’re bursting at the seams,” she told the council. Teleperformance has about 900 employees at the local call center, and about 600 work stations. The representative said the company is using creating scheduling to fit a pint into a 12-ounce bottle. She said that if Teleperformance could move into the Liberty Medical Center, it could have about 1,000 workers with intermittent ramp ups adding 400 to 500 temps. The city bought the 122,400 square-foot Liberty Medical office for $4.4 million. EMD is offering $6.1 million. If the sale goes through, the city will seek another location for its utilities and public works departments. Councilwoman Michelle Berger said selling the building to EMD for Teleperformance seemed worth any inconvenience to the city. She said if Teleperformance can’t find a large enough office in Port St. Lucie, it’ll be enticed to move elsewhere. “It’s important for us to keep

“If Teleperformance can’t find a large enough office in Port St. Lucie, it’ll be enticed to move elsewhere. It’s important for us to keep these jobs.” Michelle Berger PSL City Council these jobs,” she said at the meeting. “People said, ‘Do something,’ when we heard QVC was closing.” Vice Mayor Linda Bartz said benefits far outweighed any issues with selling the building. “We are still able to help our staff and employees (get better offices),” she said at the meeting. “We are able to help the community with jobs. We’re putting that (building) back on the tax rolls.” Councilman Ron Bowen was the most muted in his enthusiasm. “On the surface, I support it,” he said. Teleperformance opened in Port St. Lucie earlier this year. The company has about 30,000 employees throughout the nation and around 3,000 in Florida. EMD Holdings will give the city a deposit and investigate purchasing the building further.

DOMAIN from page A1 nesses to assume responsibility for principal and interest payments on the $62 million Digital Domain studio bonds.” In a proposal letter dated April 23, Textor submitted an offer containing the following paragraph to City Manager Jeff Bremer: “A lease between the City and my related businesses that, in the first year, would exceed the projected savings of any sale scenario, and by the second year, would be equal to the total principal and interest payment expense of the bonds, as currently structured. This transaction would almost entirely eliminate the loss on the bonds attributable to the original borrowings for the Tradition Studios facility. I would also agree to a lease purchase, at the option of the City, if after two years the City still prefers to liquidate the property.” Textor is currently Chairman and CEO of Pulse Entertainment Corporation in Tradition, a digital arts company modeled after Digital Domain’s original intent. Textor says the company is publicly valued at $180 Million though the market fluctuates. The most recent US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings show the value at just over $126 million. Textor says at times, it’s

nearly $200 million. “We’ve raised more than enough capital to have paid the debt payments. We’ve demonstrated that we could afford it,” Textor said. Another SEC filing shows more than $17 million in capital raised at Pulse. Port St. Lucie City Attorney Pam Booker says the city was only interested in an offer that was accompanied by cash to back it up. “He (Textor) could have presented a plan. There was no check, just his story as set forth in those letters and that wasn’t sufficient at that point,” Booker said. She said the city would only entertain legitimate, cash-backed official offers from parties interested in purchasing or leasing Digital Domain. “There’s truth, there’s fact and there’s fiction. The council wanted to deal with what was realistic. We didn’t have any of that reality from Mr. Textor,” Booker said. However, the emails show that Textor did put his offer in writing and asked for meetings to hammer out offer details. In fact, the May 11 press release, which Textor circulated to publicize his attempts to take responsibility, did garner a response from District 3 councilwoman, Shannon Martin, just one day later. In an email response to city manager

ST. LUCIE WEST — Craft beer buffs are getting some intoxicating news. Port St. Lucie is brewing up codes to make selling locally-made beer easier. “We want to address the issue before it’s a problem,” Patricia Tobin, director of planning and zoning, said. Tobin gave the City Council a peek at proposed new codes that staff will present in coming weeks. That was at the council’s last regular workshop — Oct. 19. There’s a microbrewery readying to open at 1419 S.E. Village Green Drive in December. Additionally, the Hop Life Brewing Company is aiming to open on Northwest Enterprise Drive, near Tradition Field, by as early as next summer. Tobin said they’re probably the start of microbrew mania in Port St. Lucie. Robert Tearle, co-owner of Hop Life, said St. Lucie West and Tradition are likely to see a few microbreweries open when the city rolls out the codes for them. “St Lucie West is a great upcoming area,” he said. “A lot of young professionals moving in there.” In other words, St. Lucie West and Tradition are filled with the folks who most enjoy craft beers. The Side Door Brewing Company will open its doors on Dec. 5, the anniversary of the ratification of the 21st Amendment. That’s the one repealing prohibition and it’s no coincidence they chose that

Photo courtesy of Norman Ack/Flickr CompostUSA is seeking to place a facility just outside the PGA community of St. Lucie West and a short distance from Allapattah Flats K-8 School. Several residents of the community have been speaking out in opposition.

“We have to kill this with science,” she said. Becker Holdings owns the almost 200 acres the composting facility will be on if it’s approved, and is a co-owner in the venture. Rick Melchiori, general manager, said the land is now cow pastures. It was a citrus grove, but citrus greening disease devastated it. Melchiori said opposition to the composting facility has taken him by surprise. “My suspicion is that it’s just a lack of understanding of what we’re doing,” he said. “We’ve tried our best to meet with people and talk with people about what we’re doing.” Compost USA of the Treasure Coast proposes using yard waste and a class of treated municipal sewage and turn it into a fertilizer. The part about composting municipal sewage is where many recoil. Compost USA is familiar with controversy. About five years ago the Marion County Commission revoked a special-use permit the company was under, which forced the closure of a facility near Ocala. Neighbors complained about stench, and about noise from heavy-equipment. The company also has a facility at the Sumter County landfill, which has been a composting site since the 1990s. County Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky said he takes opponents’ concerns seriously, but so far isn’t satisfied they’ve made a strong case to deny the conditional-use permit. He said the land is zoned for agriculture, which gives Becker Holdings wide latitude without having to get the commission’s nod. “They could spread chicken manure over that property and have no problem whatsoever,” he said.

Dzadovsky said that the company’s conditional-use application gives the commission power to set greater provisions. “They’re asking for a conditional use,” he said. “We can condition it with certain standards and conditions for approval.” And the permit can be withdrawn if the company fails to abide by its provisions. Among complaints opponents in PGA Village and Tradition have raised is odor. “I don’t know that their arguments are holding up in terms of smell,” Dzadovsky said. “They’re three to five miles away.” Odor can’t be measured quite as neatly as, say, sound. While molecules in an air sample can be measured, people’s perceptions of, and tolerances to scents are subjective. Anderson said opponents’ complaints about odor seem misunderstood. “Odor is a problem, but what’s underlying is what’s in that odor — pollution,” she said. Melchiori said Compost USA of the Treasure Coast has taken about 40 folks to tour the Sumter County composting facility. “People have been on the site, stood on the site, they’ve been upwind, downwind, every which way,” he said. “The general response we’ve got is, ‘Wow, this is not what we were told it would be.’” He said past 50 feet it’s usually difficult to discern any odor from the composting operation. Charles Gausten, resident of Tradition and a materials engineer said that he was in possession of a report that debates that exact statement. “According to the ‘Brown Report’ what he is saying is contradictory and after I asked him to clarify (at a meeting in Vitalia at Tradition),” said Gausten. “He

BEER from page A12 date. Dwayne Buchholz, owner, said microbreweries with tap rooms are unique, which is why the city had to write new codes for them. “It’s been a long process getting this brewery in,” he remarked. Tobin said the city staff contemplated how to approve a microbrewery under existing codes, and came up with designating Side Door as a manufacturer. City codes allow manufacturers to use up to 20 percent of their space for retail, which allows Side Door to open a tap room until the staff composes and the council approves codes for microbreweries. “I think this is going to be a big thing,” Buchholz said. “I think you’ll see several breweries come in.” Microbreweries and tap rooms, Buchholz said, are unlike clubs, pubs and bars. He said craft beer aficionados head to them for taste adventures among other enthusiasts. Beer isn’t part of the fun at a microbrewery tap room — it is the fun. He said craft beer lovers will travel sometimes a couple hundred miles to sample craft beers. “There’s been a beer renaisscance going on for 20 years now,” Buchholz said. He said the oldest microbrewer-

ies in Florida are only about five years old. Just this year the State Legislature legalized selling craft beers in 64-ounce bottles called “growlers,” which many take as signaling that craft beer fans and microbrewers have a growing political clout. Microbrewers are still in the middle of numerous state regulations that limit their business. For example, microbrewers generally can’t deliver beer outside their tap rooms. They have to get distributers to do that. But, there’s a loophole — beer festivals. Both Side Door and Hop Life will be at the Treasure Coast Beer Fest at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center on Nov. 21. Tearle and Buchholz said the city can’t get new codes opening doors to microbreweries fast enough, and they hope several come to town. That’ll attract more beer lovers, they say. “When you get a hub of breweries, people start paying attention,” Buchholz said. Tobin, too, would like to see several microbreweries take advantage of the new codes when they City Council adopts them. “I just got back from Ireland and have a new appreciation for beer,” she said. More about the Treasure Coast Beer Fest is at www.treasurecoastbeerfest.com.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County has issued a rabies alert to remain in effect for 60 days. The geographical area related to the alert includes: north of Prima Vista Blvd; east of St. Lucie County Fair Grounds; west of Highway A1A; and south of Indrio Rd. The alert is in response to an above-average percentage of animals testing positive for rabies this year. St. Lucie County’s five-year average is two rabid animals a year. Between March and October of this year five animals have tested positive for rabies including one cat, three raccoons and one bat. Health officials urge residents to avoid contact with wild and stray animals to protect themselves from the risk of rabies exposure. “Rabies is a potentially fatal disease. It is important not to handle wild animals, to be aware of unusual acting animals, and to keep pets vaccinated against rabies,” said Clint Sperber, county health officer. All residents of St. Lucie County should be aware that rabies is present in the wild animal population

Standards “prepared students for success in college, career and life by emphasizing analytical thinking.” She went on to say that the new standards required students to create graphs, interact with test content and write and respond in different ways than on traditional tests. In addition, it tested higher-order thinking skills. Wayne Gent, the new superintendent of the St. Lucie Public Schools, has joined with other school superintendents in challenging the new system. In an interview, he explained his reservations. “We have a flawed system in Florida,” he said. “We had the FCATs and the state Department of Education switched to the Florida Standards Assessment. It is more rigorous. I personally have no issue with the standards. There is more analytical thinking, more ‘hows’ and ‘whys.’ Students have to debate and defend their positions. We want to teach to the standards, but the standards have to be measured.” The FSA test was administered in early 2015. It was a test originally designed to measure Utah standards and it was field tested in Utah. Therefore, Florida standards were tested with an exam developed to test standards in Utah. Each state sets its own standards for what should be learned in each grade. “Thirty-five percent of the questions were not related to the Florida standards,” Gent said. “It also discriminates against speakers of other languages.” The Florida legislature asked for an independent validity study on the tests and found several areas of concern. There was enough concern to conclude that “the evaluation team can reasonably state that the spring 2015 administration of the FSA did not meet the normal rigor and standardization expected with a high-stakes assessment program like the

Wayne Gent FSA.” “All 67 superintendents (in Florida) have lost confidence in the assessment system,” Gent said. By state law, we have to measure performance, which counts for 50 percent. Learning gains, which is how much they have learned from one year to the next, also counts for 50 percent. You take the two and get an accurate score. It’s always been that way. Unfortunately, we’re only being judged this year on performance, not on gains, and that is half the information. “State law says you have to use both. It’s unfair, because you can’t accurately measure performance. For children with low income, with the gains, we can see the growth. With this, we can’t tell that.” “Students with economic challenges will be discriminated against. It’s discrimination based on economic status and the school is penalized.” Gent noted that there were glitches in the administration of the online test, including students unable to log in and screens disappearing in the middle of the testing.

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — In 1981, Dorothy Brennan of Port St. Lucie, read a story in the newspaper about a mother who had accidentally given her child an overdose of medicine because she could not read the instructions on the bottle. Touched by the terrible tragedy and horrified to learn how many adults in her own county struggled with literacy issues, Brennan decided this could not happen again. She set about creating Learn to Read St. Lucie County, a non-profit organization which was incorporated in 1983 and which provides free, confidential, and one-to-one literacy and English as a Second Language instruction to any adult in need of literacy assistance. In 2015, members of the Dyer Difference Award Committee, comprised of members of the Dyer Chevrolet staff family in Fort Pierce, chose to recognize the efforts of the volunteers from Learn to Read St. Lucie County with this month’s Dyer Difference

Award. In addition to being honored and recognized for its efforts, volunteers from Learn to Read St. Lucie were presented with a check for $3,000 to help fund programs and services to promote and implement the mission of the program, which is the only one of its kind offering free one-to-one literacy training for adults. Members of the Dyer Chevrolet Fort Pierce staff meet to review the applications which have been submitted and select one nonprofit organization to receive that month’s recognition and $3,000 award. For the Dyer family and the members of the Dyer Chevrolet Fort Pierce staff, it’s all about helping to make a positive difference in the community. Gausten added that his concern is the retention farm that can get into the drinking water. “They say they are putting down a barrier but they also said they are not lining the land,” claims Gausten. “The whole area is around the C-24 canals and one of those canals goes straight to the McCarty farm, where they are putting a drinking reservoir.” Melchiori said the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has strict guidelines for a composting facility that include regular water testing. The superintendents are asking for a one-year pause in the giving of school grades so that it can include learning gains and performance. “It’s up to the legislature,” Gent said. “We will appeal to the governor himself. Other states that have the same problems have suspended the grades for a year. We are asking for no school grades this year and to make this year a baseline. Next year, we can begin measuring growth. We’re asking for a comprehensive review of the accountability system. It’s broken.” Gent is careful to differentiate between standards and testing. “I’m for high standards, accountability and increased rigor, but we have to make sure we have an accurate way to assess our students. We currently don’t have that in Florida. We won’t receive the grades until nine months after the test. Normally, assessments are to measure progress and growth and see if you need to reteach. We can’t address that since we don’t know the results. I favor high standards, but I want to just pause to get it right. It’s a

high-stakes test, with promotion and graduation at stake. It must be fair and valid.” The superintendent said that holding the grades for a year will not hurt, but that giving schools the grades will result in an increase in F-rated schools. “It’s not a fair evaluation of the schools,” he said. “School grades are important for economic growth and to businesses and people moving in. Letter grades have never been an accurate measure of what goes on.” Gent said that when the legislature meets in January, there will be legislation proposed to delay the grades. In the interim, he will be happy to meet with community groups to discuss the issue and he suggests parents call the school principals to ask for information. “We want to give them accurate information,” Gent said. “If the scores come out, they’ll probably come out in January, when we‘re getting ready to take the new test. This system cheats kids and teachers. This is about our kids. It’s why we’re here.” To contact the offices of the St. Lucie County Public Schools, call Kerry Padrick at (772) 429-5532.

Peripheral Neuropathy: A Deadly Condition? If You’re Suffering With Peripheral Neuropathy This Might Be The Most Important Thing You Read All Year you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (see the special neuropathy severity examination at the end of this article).

We even see individuals whose neuropathy is so far advanced they are at risk of having their feet amputated. However, none of these are the reason neuropathy can be a deadly condition. The biggest risks from peripheral neuropathy are the balance problems and falls that this condition can cause.

Figure 1: Falls affect millions of seniors in the U.S. every year

You see, the nerves in your feet help send signals to your brain to maintain proper balance. When the nerves are damaged by neuropathy it is common to feel like you are off balance, or going to fall. Many of you reading this may have already fallen, and live in fear that your next fall may result in a fracture or concussion. Sadly, over 2.4 million seniors visit the emergency room each year due to falls, and nearly 23,000 die.

Figure 2: When these very small blood vessels become diseased they begin to shrivel up and the nerves begin to degenerate.

This damage that results in balance problems is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. As you can see in Figure 2, as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems as well as, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms. To make matters worse, too many doctors simply prescribe medications which don’t fix the cause of the problem. Even worse, some of these drugs have side effects that include dizziness and loss of balance! There is now a facility right here in Port St. Lucie that offers

In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined. 1) What is the underlying cause? 2) How much nerve damage has been sustained? NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is likely nothing that we can do for you. 3) How much treatment will your condition require? The NASA developed treatment we use in our office is like watering a plant. This technology will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a plant and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper.

The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage there is hope! Dr. John Silva, D.C. at the Neuropathy Relief Center will do a Neuropathy Severity Examination for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing, and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy. Dr. Silva will be offering this Neuropathy Severity Examination to the first 12 callers who respond to this publication. After the first 12 callers, we will continue to schedule evaluations at the normal examination fee of $300. So don’t hesitate to act now! Call 772-429-8800 to make an appointment with Dr. Silva to determine if your peripheral neuropathy can be treated and your balance restored. Port St. Lucie, FL—In our office we have seen hundreds of patients suffering with the debilitating symptoms of peripheral neuropathy like burning, weakness, pain, numbness, and tingling.

and domestic animals are at risk if not vaccinated. The public is asked to maintain a heightened awareness that rabies is active in St. Lucie County. Alerts are designed to increase awareness to the public, but they should not give a false sense of security to areas that are not indicated in the alert. An animal with rabies could infect other wild animals or domestic animals that have not been vaccinated against rabies. All domestic animals should be vaccinated against rabies and all wildlife contact should be avoided, particularly raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats and coyotes. Rabies is transmitted through exposure to the saliva and nervous tissue from a rabid animal through a bite, scratch, or contact with mucous membranes such as the eyes, nose, or mouth. Along with local animal services, the county’s health department works to prevent rabies by assisting with animal bite investigations and testing of animals for rabies through the Florida Department of Health Bureau of Laboratories. It also provides rabies vaccinations to victims of animal bites, the only known effective treatment for rabies prevention in humans. Keep rabies vaccinations up to date for all pets, and keep your pets under direct supervision, so they do not come in contact with wild animals. If your pet is bitten by a wild animal, seek veterinary assistant for the animal immediately and contact your local animal control services. Additionally, call your local animal control agency to remove any stray animals from your neighborhood, and spay or neuter your pets to help reduce the number of unwanted pets that may not be properly cared for or regularly vaccinated. Don’t handle, feed, or unintentionally attract wild animals with open garbage cans or litter. Never

Clint Sperber adopt wild animals, or bring them into your home. Teach children not to handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even if they appear friendly. Prevent bats from entering living quarters or occupied spaces in homes, churches, schools, and other similar areas where they might come in contact with people and pets. If bitten or scratched by a wild animal or stray you should report the incident to your doctor immediately, as well as local animal services and the county health department. The contact number to report an animal bite to DOHSt. Lucie is (772) 462-3883. If you have an unvaccinated pet the Humane Society of St. Lucie County, Inc. is having its second annual Walk the Walk Against Animal Cruelty on Nov. 14th at Tradition Square from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Rabies vaccinations will be available for $10. ST. LUCIE WEST – Port St. Lucie’s only cemetery is in the middle of a transformation process that will soon add a pet cemetery and later a chapel to its list of updates. Three years ago, in 2012, Mark Riposta and his son Andrew Riposta took over the then overgrown Rolling Oaks Cemetery with plans to turn it into something beautiful. With Mark still tending to a larger cemetery in Jacksonville, Andrew is spearheading the changes taking place at the Port St. Lucie property. “It should be a nice place to visit,” said Andrew Riposta, Rolling Oaks’ co-owner and cemetery director. “That’s why we go for a pretty park atmosphere instead of a drab graveyard that you’re creeped out and scared to be in.” In the next 60 days, Andrew

TREASURE COAST — With Halloween days away, folks become interested in the supernatural or the paranormal and the coast is surprisingly famous for its haunts and stories. If the myths are true — there’s a lot scarier things out there than the witches, ghosts and goblins that show up trick or treating at your door. “The Devil’s Tree” resides in Port St. Lucie on canal C-24 in Oak Hammock Park. The legend goes that in the 1970’s, not long ago but before the land became a park, two young girls were found hanging from the aged tree. The serial killer was said to be Gerard John Schaefer and ex-police officer. Eventually, they were buried beneath the tree and remained there until 1977 when two fishermen discovered them. Some say they’ve seen the ghostly figures of two young women appear. Then there is Vince “Trapper” Nelson, who sold furs for a living. He was supposedly a loner who was a bit eccentric. He would swing out over the river on a rope to scare tour boat parties. Well, at least according to his ghost, someone else got the last scare. Although his death in 1968 from a gunshot wound to the head was declared a suicide, some people say he has appeared and disput-

ed that, saying he was murdered. But, at the Boston House in Fort Pierce, where reportedly a woman hanged herself, her apparition doesn’t dispute that. She just appears from time to time, according to www.realhaunts.com. Some of the ghosts are less malevolent. One ghost at Indian River State College may just want to enjoy the entertainment. Typically, he hangs out at the theater building and sometimes waves to people who attend performances. Whether he eats popcorn or claps during performances is unknown. But apparently his home is actually in the broom closet. His favorite color appears to be blue. It’s a “Night at the Museum” in Stuart’s Elliott Museum where ghosts appear to come from items featured in the museum. Haunts are said to reside in this 1961 building, erected by Harmon P. Elliott to honor his late father, inventor Sterling Elliott. So maybe the Elliott Museum provided the idea for “Night at the Museum,” where the character portrayed by Ben Stiller discovered that the exhibits come to life. At the House of Refuge Museum, which used to provide lodging for shipwrecked passengers, reports the sightings of those past who lived on the property, including Ais Indian tribesmen. There’s even a guided tour that may let you experience some ghostly activity. Patrick and Tricia Mesmer started the Port Salerno Ghost Tours. There is a legend about the

CEMETERY from page A29 said an area dedicated to pets will open where owners can scatter ashes or bury a family pet. Rolling Oaks will partner with Haisley Funeral Home that already offers a pet cremation service, Andrew said. “We kept getting phone calls about pets,” Andrew said. “It’s not a big business, but it’s definitely a good community outreach to have that separate section for pets.” With 23-acres of space, only about six of them were operational when the Riposta’s took ownership. Ten of those acres have yet to see a burial. After extensive landscaping, the entire property is now available for use. A brand new cremation garden with a pond in the center has become the focal point of the cemetery, and what was a small entrance marker has been replaced with a large sign welcoming visitors to Rolling Oaks. Bushes and shrubs that previously were up against headstones have been cleared out. The lawn is always well manicured, and an office building complete with a chapel is in the plan for the near future. Originally from Maine, Mark Riposta has been in a funeral director for about 36 years. Since moving to Florida, he has been responsible for reviving cemeteries that have fallen by the wayside in cities from Tallahassee to Jacksonville, and all over the state. “I’ve been around it most of my life,” Andrew said about the

DOMAIN from page A11 Jeff Bremmer, Martin writes: “Please tell Mr. Textor that unless he plans to walk into City Hall with a $62 million dollar cashier’s check made payable to the City of Port St. Lucie — to please STOP wasting the City’s time. PSL residents are tired of these games/so-called proposals. And so am I.” She added, “Actually, please add an additional $1.5 million for operating costs and legal fees the city has incurred as a result of DD closing in September 2012. Further, please also add the total amount of property taxes the city and county would have received in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 had DD not closed in September 2012. That should bring the total around $66 million. Please note that this is my opinion.” Textor chalks up Martin’s terseness to politics.

YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • ST. LUCIE WEST/TRADITION • OCTOBER 30, 2015• A31 funeral and cemetery business. Even though he pursued other fields of study in college, he almost always kept a job in a cemetery. Now he is enjoying being the face of Rolling Oaks and does not see leaving the family business any time soon. “People always ask how I do what I do without always being depressed,” Andrew said. “Being around this, you realize you never know what life is going to bring you or take from you. I don’t think it’s depressing, I don’t think it’s fun either. But I like being able to help people through what is a really hard time.” For the Ripostas, the funeral and cemetery industry is about providing the community a service that is best offered when one family is able to be there for another family in a time of need. “My father lost his little brother when he was young, and he always talks about how he saw how the funeral director interacted with the family,” Andrew said. “My dad always says, ‘the difference between a family and a corporation is, it’s our family taking care of your family when you need it most.’” That family-to-family mentality is what Andrew believes makes Rolling Oaks and all of the Riposta-owned businesses stand out above its corporate competitors. Rolling Oaks Cemetery and Cremation Gardens is located 2200 SW Del Rio Boulevard, Port Saint Lucie. For more information, call Andrew Riposta at (772) 873-2441 or visit www. rolling-oaks-cemetery.com.

“They politically demonized the people at Digital Domain so much. There’s a toxic political culture in this community,” Textor said. Attorney Pam Booker disagrees. “Politics was not involved,” she said. Regarding notifying the public about the email offers, and regarding the offers themselves, Booker was to the point. “I don’t have any further comments other than what we discussed (in the interview) yesterday.” Editor’s Note: Your Voice News & Views contacted Port St. Lucie mayor Greg Oravec who was also city manager during much of the Digital Domain saga. Mayor Oravec directed all media questions about Digital Domain and John Textor to City Attorney Pam Booker. Your Voice attempted to contact Former Mayor JoAnn M. Faiella but did not hear back by press time.

PORT ST. LUCIE — Samantha LaCroix has big plans. The drama specialist at St. Lucie West Centennial High School has an ambitious program planned for the year. It’s a program that is steeped in the dramatic arts and it is also one that ties art to the community and the larger society. On Nov. 19, students will present the annual Broadway Cares show. The program, based on the Broadway Cares organization in New York, raises fund for AIDS research. “Since the beginning of the year I’ve been auditioning students every two weeks,” LaCroix said. “Broadway Cares is a dress rehearsal for district competition. The first audition was monologues and we studied them first. I chose the best five for district competition. Then we did solo auditions and studied singing and movement and chose the five best. For musical and theatrical scenes, I gave them more independence, with the tools to put it together. We have duets

CENTENNIAL from page B1 and large groups. There’s a little bit of everything,” said LaCroix. LaCroix added that they incorporated pantomimes —where performers express meaning through gestures accompanied by music. “Finally, we did pantomimes, which are my favorite. You have to act out a dramatic scene without words, using music, sound effects and dance to enrich the performance. There is so much you can do to move the audience. They’re usually pretty deep and dramatic and impactful.” This is a fundraiser, with a large portion of the proceeds going to Broadway Cares and some to fund the drama program. There will be a silent auction with some Broadway paraphernalia. A fun twist — a recent Centennial grad taking part. “For the first time, I have a student technical director, Ronjunior Carrey,” LaCroix said. “He’s a graduate of the band program. He’s designing lighting and it’s the first time we’ve had lighting effects. For competition you can’t use lighting, but we’re trying to make Broadway Cares more theatrical and amp it up a notch.” In February, the focus is Black History Month. “On Feb. 25, we’ll do a multi-media celebration show with dance, the spoken word, musical theater and gospel,” LaCroix said. “I’m giving each class one show (this year) and this will be more advanced students. Each class gets the experience of putting things together. You learn by being on stage. We’ll collaborate with the musical theater class.” February also brings children’s theater, “A Dragon in the Mix.” The show will be presented to schools Feb. 2-4 and there are still openings for classes and the home-schooled. On Feb. 4, there will be an evening performance for the public. “It explores gender roles,” LaCroix said. “It’s about the misperceptions we have. Just because you’re a dragon doesn’t mean you’re scary and just because you’re a princess doesn’t mean you have to sit and look pretty. It all takes place in a land far, far away.” March brings “No More Pain III,” a production for students in middle school and above. Past programs have tackled issues like bullying and self-esteem. “This has the most advanced students,” LaCroix said. “Students have written monologues over the years and we’re going to put it together. It will be serious and self-reflective. We‘ll find a way to let theater speak and heal

WWW.YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM and show there are options out there.” The program will be presented March 2-3, with an evening performance March 4. In April, the mood lightens, with “Love through the Decades.” “Each class will pick a decade and research it and study anything to do with love, including costumes and props. I want to use all the talents my students have. It’s called ensemble devised. We sit Samantha LaCroix together and create a show together. There’s one director, but everyone comes up with ideas. It’s the newest thing. It’s a very cool concept. People are more emotionally invested when they put their spin on it.” LaCroix said that this semester is freeing students from the fear of performing and teaching them how to do stage productions; next semester, they’ll use the knowledge to put it into action. In May, students will put on “Unity,” which LaCroix describes as a fine arts extravaganza. “We’ll showcase all the performing arts we offer,” she said. “There will be a gallery walk with a sculpture garden. The arts teachers will do live art and the culinary students will present hors d’oeuvres. The band teacher will play the saxophone like a street musician. “The actual program will feature dance, drama and chorus, with all the music played by the band. The art department will design the sets. It’s really awesome. I want to show as many kids and as many talents. Every teacher will also be highlighted. I will sing opera with the chorus teacher. We’ll highlight ourselves and our students and what Centennial offers. It’s a big, full season.” Indeed it is. LaCroix has 220 students in her drama program and there are hundreds more in all the arts programs. I hope the community will come out and support them. St. Lucie West Centennial High School students present “Broadway Cares,” Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. at the high school, 1485 Cashmere Blvd. Tickets are $10 and may be ordered online at http:// slwch.booktix.com or may be purchased at the front office. From a smoky 1920’s Speakeasy to the Bowery of the 1930’s, from a World War II USO to a 1950’s Manhattan supper club, Swinging on a Star perfectly weaves various settings and scenes with some of the most popular songs of a generation. The journey also showcases music from the “Road Movies” starring Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Sunlight Community Church to host Christian vocal trio Selah FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE WEST — Contemporary Christian vocal trio Selah is kicking off its Christmas tour at Sunlight Community Church in St. Lucie West on Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. Selah has won seven Gospel Music Association Dove Awards and has sold more than $4 million albums and single units combined. The members of Selah; Todd Smith, Allan Hall and Amy Perry, will also visit South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Nevada, Kansas, Georgia and the Caribbean on their tour. The group has had considerable success over the course of their 17 years in ministry. The title track of their latest album made history by becoming the only song to debut at the top of the Christian Soft AC chart since Billboard began archiving the weekly charts in 2006. It also marks Selah’s eighth number one single, joining the ranks of “You Raise Me Up,” “Wonderful, Merciful Savior” and “Press On.” “Life has ups and downs, and

when you are down, that’s typically when you are most open to change. You’re humble and at a place where you ask, ‘How am I ever going to get out of this?’ Then God pulls you through,” said Smith. “I’ve seen that over and over in my own life. ‘You Amaze Us’ is saying — I’m in awe of you. I’ve seen how you have brought me through in the past and I trust that you will again. I will hope in you and not focus on my circumstances, because your word is life and peace.” For Selah, the night will be not only about entertainment, but also something much deeper. Hall says, “When I was a child, I felt like God said to me, ‘I want you to help people through music.’ I didn’t know what form that would take and that it would end up being a career, but I’m glad it did. I love talking with people after our shows and hearing their stories. That’s why we do this — to encourage them. If we can lighten

Ashley Gang, a group of robbers from the 1920s buried near Port Salerno. The area has a colorful past according to the tours with the likes of pirates, hermits and ship captains, Mesmer said; they always register some paranormal activity on a special meter. She added, sometimes they see unexplained lights or even full-bodied apparitions and people also feel sensations, such as being touched. The cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children and the tour runs for about three quarters of a mile of a mile. For more information, call (772) 223-5482. Halloween has its own ghostly history — it’s also called All Hallow’s Eve and All Saint’s Eve, according to internet sources. It is celebrated on Oct. 31 and begins the three-day celebration of Allhallowtide. The time of the year that is dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints, martyrs and faithful departed believers. One feature of Halloween is Jack-o’-lanterns, which are supposed to frighten evil spirits. Wikipedia says that supposedly the Jack-o’-lantern represents a man named Jack, who is denied

entry into both heaven and hell. The legend goes that Satan threw a coal at Jack, who places it into a hollowed-out turnip to provide warmth on a cold night. For a traditional Halloween event, as opposed to hunting for the real phantoms, the Fall Fun Fest will be held at Village Square at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center on Friday, Oct. 30, through Sunday, Nov. 1. There will be a costume contest on Oct. 31 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be trick or treating the same evening inside the Civic Center. Other features of the event include carnival food and rides. In Martin County, Unity of Stuart will have Trunk or Treat from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 31 at 211 Central Parkway, Stuart. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office will have a Trunk or Treat event from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and costumed members of the Trinity United Methodist Church will hand out candy from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 2221 N.E. Savannah Road, Jensen Beach. Your Voice News & Views would like to see how readers are spending their holiday with photos from Halloween, fall festivals and upcoming holiday events. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Scott and Lorraine Walter have announced that the end of an era could be on the horizon. The local teacher-parent store could be closing in late December if a buyer for the specialty retail store for educators, located in The Carlton Square Center in Port St. Lucie can’t be found. Their loyal customers travel from Martin, Indian River, North Palm Beach, and Okeechobee counties and locally to shop for those hard to find specialty items used by teachers and involved parents as well as the internet shoppers who buy from their web-site. We were able to give (Martin County Veterans Service Office supervisor) Tony Reese a check for $17,500.” Last year the Vietnam Veterans of America’s Chapter 1041 had an idea. What if the Martin County Veterans Service Office supervisor, Reese, had a pot of money to help cash-strapped veterans? Normally Reese fills his days helping veterans file claims and appeals to the Department of Veterans Affairs. But, a few times a month he gets veterans who need things the VA doesn’t offer.
