SLC Education Foundation reaches silver anniversary Lisa Barry
FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — In 1990, St. Lucie County gained an organization that connects private sector donations with public school teachers and students in the form of grants and scholarships. Now, 25 years later, the Education Foundation of St. Lucie County is celebrating a quarter-century of accomplishments. Even though the Foundation funneled $120,000 in funds to educators and $60,000 to students last year, the organization’s Executive Director, Thom Jones, said a little more community awareness could go a long way. “One of my major jobs is to reach out to the private sector and tell them the great story about the St. Lucie school district,” Jones said. “A lot of times, teachers reach into their own pockets to pay for programs. But for some things, they’re able to come to the Foundation for help.” Improving graduation rates is a top priority of the Foundation and a shared goal of the St. Lucie County School District. “The need is always greater than the funding available,” Jones said. “We’re all about growing the funding base through the private sector to raise more money.” Jones assumed leadership of the Foundation on Aug. 1 this year, about seven months after
the sudden passing of beloved former executive director Jim McKenzie in December 2014. The Foundation is currently in grant season, the time in the fall where teachers can apply for grants for classroom projects and resources outside their norThom Jones mal budget. When spring rolls around, the foundation will shift its focus to scholarships for high school students seeking higher education. Fort Pierce attorney Joel Zwemer of law firm Dean, Mead, Minton and Zwemer, is a longtime supporter of local education, and has recently joined the Education Foundation as a board member. He encourages businesses to invest in public education to fuel a better future for the entire community. “If you get involved in education, it is not going to have an immediate impact on your business. Long term, it will pay back if you’re here long term,” Zwemer said. “If we can graduate students at a level where they are ready to either work or go on to college and come back to the County, then we will have a stronger

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.... I KNOW I DID .... SEVERAL TIMES !!!!! I’ve had severe hearing loss for years, I went from one hearing aid store to another chasing after those cheap hearing aids you see in the paper.. No one explained why cheap hearing aids were not good for me, they just took my $500.00 dollars and stuck this thing in my ear that didn’t really make me hear any better. I then met Joe Mutter at Mutter’s Hearing Center, he explained what cheap aids do and he was right! I got the aid Joe recommended and I have never heard better! It just makes me sick to think of the hundreds of dollars I spent on the cheap stuff. There’s a whole lot of people out there advertising cheap hearing aids, take it from me, DON’T BE FOOLED, you truly do get what you pay for! I believe Joe was sent to me by God and I wanted to share my story so others would not be taken advantage of like I was. I live in Palm City now and believe me, Joe is worth the drive.

Commitment to chimps bring career full circle Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Molly Polidoroff’s love affair with chimps began in college. She attended Stanford, where she majored in human biology, but a visiting professor caught her attention. It was Jane Goodall, legendary primatologist and conservationist. “Jane is where it started,” she said. “She was a visiting professor and taught a course in primatology. I got to know her.” Polidoroff was selected to go to Gombe, in what is now Tanzania, with Goodall. It was a chance of a lifetime. “As a 21-year-old college student, it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” she said. “It had a lifelong impact on me. She is the most mission-driven person I’ve ever met on the planet. She’s incredibly dedicated, focused, unselfish and committed. Her work ethic is phenomenal. She has an incredibly high level of integrity. She was quite a mentor and a role model.” Polidoroff went on to earn a Master of Science degree in public health with a specialization in

Aside from preparing students to one day return to the County to live and work, the Education Foundation helps build a better narrative about the St. Lucie County School District as a whole. When the community supports schools and schools are able to succeed, people are attracted to the area, Jones said. “Businesses are concerned about education in St. Lucie County,”

open his new office doors and launch his “direct patient care” or “doctor concierge” business dubbed “Preserve Heath MD.” Now, instead of squeezing in 30 to 40 patients per day, Dr. Pearlstine will offer top-notch, roundthe-clock, affordable care to no more than 350 patients per year. What will it cost patients for an all-access pass to Dr. Pearlstine? About $1,800 per year, per adult, which can be paid in monthly, quarterly, or annual installments. That membership fee covers a bundle of services that insurance generally does not cover. “There is no charge for anything that I do in the office using my hands and my brain,” Dr. Pearlstine said. Dr. Pearlstine’s nurse, Patty Guzman, LPN, is a testament to the power of a personally-connected doctor. Prior to joining Pearlstine’s practice, Guzman worked for a concierge doctor, who was also her family doctor, in Stuart for 24 years. That doctor has since relocated to the Boston area. “He knew me as a patient,” Guzman said. When a pain in her back began to transform and move, her doctor already had the personal knowledge and background information at his fingertips that helped him diagnose an
Dr. Ira Pearlstine aneurism. “I wasn’t sick,” Guzman said. “If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be living today,” she added. “Uniquely personal care” is the tagline Dr. Pearlstine has attached to his new practice for good reason. With less than 350 patients, he intends to keep track of each and every one of them. He will be able to recall patient symptoms, history and habits from his recent memory instead of having to ruffle through stacks of paperwork of patients he has not seen in months or years. “I’m trying to attract three groups of people,” Dr. Pearlstine

Valley. In 2014, she got a call that changed the direction of her life. “A recruiter from Save the Chimps (in Fort Pierce) called me and told me about a position with the organization,” she said. “It sounded wonderful. I had recently gone back to Gombe and had chimps on my mind. It’s a cause near and dear to my heart. I said I would help them find someone and gave them some names. They called back a week later and I gave them more names. “They called back three days later and said, ‘What about you?’ It wasn’t on my radar to think about relocating. On a personal level, I thought that at this time of my life, what an opportunity to put my skills and abilities together with something I’m passionate about.” Polidoroff’s husband, Tim, who is retired, grew up in Coral Gables, and the couple decided to come to Florida. Polidoroff was hired in November 2014 and began working full time in January 2015. The couple moved to Palm City. Save the Chimps was started in 1997 and housed in New Mexico. The move to Florida, chosen because the climate most closely resembles that of Africa, took nine years. The last of the chimps

was moved in 2011, and new ones continue to arrive. Chimps are brought to the sanctuary, the world’s largest, as they are rescued from research labs, the entertainment industry and the pet trade. Polidoroff oversees a staff of 60 and 253 chimps on Save the Chimp’s 150-acre property; the chimps live on 12 three-acre islands. The sanctuary is not open to the public, but it depends on donations and volunteers. Volunteers can do everything from working in the office, helping at fundraisers or working in the industrial kitchen. The chimps consume 1,300 bananas a day and volunteers make hundreds of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. They also make protein shakes for those on special diets, make treats and shred paper that is used by the chimps to make nests. The sanctuary has an upcoming fundraiser Nov. 5 called Chimps Kitchen. It is the 7th annual event and will take place at the Cobalt Restaurant at the Vero Beach Hotel & Spa. “There will be a hors d’oeuvres and an amazing spread created and donated by local celebrity chefs,” Polidoroff said. “There will be wine, beer and, in the spirit of the chimps, banana daiquiris.

ST. LUCIE WEST — On Sept. 30, exactly 35 years after the Port St. Lucie Business Women formally organized, a tree dedication ceremony was held in front of Port St. Lucie City Hall in honor and recognition of the organization’s dedicated service to the community. Port St. Lucie Business Women President Karen Ostrand recounted the beginnings of the Business Women where a core group of four women in the banking field believed they could and should positively impact the community where they lived and worked. Invitations were sent out to other business women and a decision was made to organize. Vice Mayor Linda Bartz spoke about personally knowing three of the four original organizers, remarking about their vigorous and caring natures. She emphasized the need to support women and then watch them grow. Mayor Gregory J. Oravec said it was noteworthy that a tree planting was selected to commemorate

PEARLSTINE from page A6 said. The first group is people who “want good healthcare, who want access to their doctor, people who want their doctor in their back pocket so to speak,” Dr. Pearlstine said. To make sure he fits the “doctor in the back pocket” bill, Dr. Pearlstine is making himself available to clients 24 hours per day. Even though his office hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., he will extend hours to fit clients’ schedules and make house calls when necessary. Once his assistant leaves the office for the day, all calls are forwarded directly to Dr. Pearlstine’s cell phone, and he answers. The second group of people Dr. Pearlstine aims to cater to is the sick. “I have some patients I’ll probably be seeing a couple times per week,” Dr. Pearlstine said. People who need regular, consistent and continued care are often plagued with a long list of doctors and specialists that tend to them throughout the year. These people often require frequent trips into the doctor’s office or hospital, and there can be holes in health insurance that leave them paying for necessary treatment, consultation and aid that Dr. Pearlstine will deliver in his package deal. Finally, Dr. Pearlstine hopes to

Further, time spent in the waiting room will be reduced to almost nothing, unless the patient prefers to grab a cup of complimentary coffee or tea before beginning the appointment. In case of an emergency, he will call ahead to the hospital. When multiple specialists are required to treat a person, he will coordinate between them to save the patient the headache and hassle attached to all the phone calls and appointments. If a patient needs advice on an over-thecounter drug from a pharmacy floor, Dr. Pearlstine will be a phone call away. If a patient is away at college or on vacation, he will consult via video chat. The list goes on and on. For now, the doctor is all-in on this business with the help of a single nurse and one administra-

Tradition office gets better tech to detect breast cancer Lisa Barry
FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TRADITION — October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month across the country. It is a month to raise awareness for a disease that is diagnosed in a woman every two minutes in the United States alone, according to the Susan G. Komen nonprofit breast cancer organization. In Tradition, one doctor’s office takes prevention and screening one step further than the average obstetrics and gynecology (OB/ GYN) facility on the Treasure Coast. “We are one of the only areas between West Palm and north of Vero Beach to Melbourne that has the first digital, 3D mammography,” said Dr. Brandy Becker of Women’s Health Specialists in Tradition. The new technology may be better at diagnosing breast cancer earlier on, and cuts down on the number of return visits women make for mammograms that give unclear results, according to preliminary research. “It’s always offered to patients, but never pushed or required,” Becker said. Health insurance companies have yet to validate the technology, so for now, it is still an out of pocket cost to patients. The 3D mammography takes approximately three to 10 seconds longer than a traditional mammogram and allows doctors to move and manipulate the images to see the scan from more angles Becker said. “People can think of it as a kind of a CAT Scan,” she added. “I really advocate for the 3D mammogram if a patient frequently has problems with coming back
Dr. Brandy Becker and forth for mammograms in the past,” Becker said. Some women have a harder time with mammograms than others, and some are repeatedly called back because something in their mammogram triggered concern. Early data shows the 3D mammography may decrease return visits 40- to 60-percent. The exact statistics on how well the new scan better detects different kinds of cancer at different stages is still unclear, Becker said. Regardless of whether a woman chooses to go the 3D mammography route, regular screening for breast cancer is crucial to early detection and successful treatment of breast cancer. Women over the age of 70 and women who have a close family member with a history of breast cancer typically have the highest risk of developing breast cancer. Dr. Becker suggests women use an online risk assessment tool at www.cancer.gov/bcrisktool to help calculate their lifetime risk at home. For average risk patients, women

ST. LUCIE WEST — The St. Lucie West Services District has 128 lakes stretching over 650 acres, and they’re filled with fish. It also has a strict rule against trespassing on the lakes and their shores, which effectively means no fishing or boating. “It becomes a large liability for the district to allow boats and
fishing in there,” Dennis Pickle, the district’s manager and utilities director, said in a telephone interview. At its last regular monthly workshop — Monday, Oct. 5 — the Board of Supervisors discussed the pros and cons of baiting a hook for St. Lucie West property-owner associations to take possession of the lakes to offer them for residents’ recreation.

LAKES from page A18 “We’ve discussed this for years and we need to take some actions,” Harvey Cutler, chairman, said, at the meeting. In the telephone interview after the meeting, Pickle said no St. Lucie West community has recently approached the board about using the lakes for recreation. However, it is a frequent request over the years. Lake Charles, nestled between Crosstown Parkway and St. Lucie West Boulevard along California Boulevard, is the only community that owns the lakes in it. The district manages them. Pickle said Lake Charles allows some recreational activities on the lakes. Cutler said if the district deeded lakes to associations there’d be a collective cheer in St. Lucie West. “There’s a lot of people who would enjoy using these lakes for recreation,” he said at the meeting. “Legally. A lot of people do it illegally.” Pickle said there is a system in place for associations to request ownership of the lakes, but there are a few swampy points. For example, there’s at least one lake that straddles two communities. Pickle said it’s unclear what would happen if one association wanted the lake for recreation and the other didn’t.
Board member Gregg Nay said he was unsure if the board should seek to make it easier and better known for associations to take over lakes and open them to recreation. “It goes kind of against the process we’ve been going through the last few years — from the HOAs to the district,” he said. Board member Everett Child agreed. He said opening the lakes for recreation is a sleeping dog he’d rather let lie. “The less said about it, from the board’s point of view, the better,” he said. Cutler disagreed. He said it seems better for the district to iron out any details to its system for transferring ownership of lakes to associations and advertise it heavily. “It needs to be done so it doesn’t come up every six months when somebody wants to go fishing,” he said. The district is a Community Development District, which is a hybrid creation of the State Legislature. The districts operate as governmental bodies to deliver some municipal services, such as water and sewer. The St. Lucie West Services District also handles storm-water management. The boards of supervisors don’t take votes at workshops, so no actions have been taken on the item.

ST. LUCIE WEST — St. Bernadette Catholic Church in St. Lucie West is a local landmark. Its gilded hulk, rising solid above the tree line, is reminiscent of the Biblical Ark of Noah, where two by two, animals were led to safety from the storm. It’s appropriate, then that St. Bernadette’s own Father Victor Ulto, armed with his flask of Holy Water, on a soggy, muggy Tuesday, blessed animals big and small in honor of The Feast of St. Francis this year. The Oct. 4th celebration honors St. Francis of Assisi, whose compassion towards animals and whose care of the environment earned him special recognition as one of only two patron saints of Italy. Father Victor did his part by blessing orphan dogs and cats at The Humane Society of St. Lucie County on Glades Cut-off Road in St. Lucie West. The Humane Society of St. Lucie County rehomes over 6 thousand pets a year. Its two locations in St. Lucie County are temporary home to about 175 animals, all up for adoption. Humane Society Public Information Officer David Lynch says inviting clergy to the facility to do the Blessing of the Animals is a new idea. “In years past, we’ve participated at the invitation of other churches but this is the first year we’re doing it here.” Lynch says future plans include using the Blessing of the Animals to raise money for the facility, which depends on just grants, donations and a nominal contract with the county. This year, however, Father Victor’s visit was a much more practical one, Lynch says. “Even though we aren’t a faith-
based organization, a lot of our supporters are. It’s important to establish that relationship and raise awareness.” Lynch says adoption needs include animals who make great pets but are overlooked because of stereotype and misconception. “October is actually Pitbull Awareness Month. A lot of Pitbulls get overlooked because of prejudice. I love Pitbulls.” Lynch says black cats and tiger cats, as well, are passed over in favor of Siamese or other more exotic types of cats even though their behaviors are the same. Father Victor, a proud father of one of the facility’s cats himself, says his blessings are an extension of The Vatican’s message during the recent U.S. Papal visit. “This is similar to what Pope Francis is saying we should be mindful of. We’re stewards of all Creation. All creation is a gift so we should safeguard it, cherish it and revere it.” Dressed smartly in black with his clerical collar, Father Victor stopped at pen after pen, chatting with the animals, thanking the volunteers for their service and reminding visitors that he, too, adopted from the facility. On his way out, he stopped at a feline cage, housing a gruff looking gray tabby. Father Victor bent close to the cat, mouth to ear and said softly, “May you be happy and find good homes. Until we meet again on Rainbow Bridge.” To adopt an animal or donate to the Humane Society of St. Lucie County, visit their locations at 100 Savannah Rd in Fort Pierce or 8890 NW Glades Cut-off Rd in St. Lucie West. You can also log onto hsslc.org for more information. The Humane Society is open Tuesday-Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

CANCER from page A15 should begin annual screenings around 40-years-old. Higher risk patients should discuss earlier screenings with their doctor, Becker said. Before ever walking into a doctor’s office, women can and should examine their own breasts for changes and abnormalities, according to Dr. Becker. She said being aware of one’s own breast texture and tissue density can help raise red flags when something changes. Any new or changing “hard mass,” reddening skin, or thickening or dimpling texture should be reported to a doctor. Once a sign of breast cancer is detected in a scan taken at an Ob/Gyn office like Dr. Becker’s, patients are referred to a breast surgeon specialist for a biopsy. “This process of waiting for results can be very stressful for women but one should be reassured not to worry too soon as this is a very common occurrence,” Dr. Becker said. “Approximately 10 percent of screening mammograms require additional evaluation and 90 percent returned as benign. The fear of needing more imaging or biopsy should not however dissuade patients from undergoing screening process as there is still a benefit of 15 to 20 percent reduction in breast cancer

Dr. Brandy Becker mortality from routine screening detection.” Many women put off screenings due to cost, Dr. Becker noted. However, the availability of free scans and discounted scans are generally increased during the month of October for Breast Cancer Awareness, giving women without general access to affordable care or health insurance an opportunity to take preventative measures against the disease. A list of resources, events, and fundraisers can be searched by county at floridabreastcancer.org. “Anything you can do for preventative care is always better than playing catch up after a late diagnosis,” Becker said.

CHIMPS from page A8 We’ll have live music, a raffle and silent auction. There will be an opportunity to bid on VIP tours of the sanctuary. In April, Save the Chimps will sponsor the 2nd annual Chimpathon, a 16K run. The distance, 16K, has symbolic value. It represents the $16,000 annual cost to care for one chimp. Some 500 runners are expected and volunteers are need for the event. For Polidoroff, returning to her roots is an ongoing delight. “I love being here, being with the chimps and the people who care so deeply about the cause,” she said. “When the possibility came up, I was more than happy to join the adventure. I’m very grateful for that. It’s an easy place to get immersed in. I’m not feeling like it’s a job. I come to

EDUCATION from page A4 meet that need,” Jones said. “Today, every dollar is meaningful. But with 40-some thousand students, if the numbers right now are in the hundreds of thousands, we’d like it to be in the millions.” On Nov. 7, the Foundation is hosting its 25th anniversary celebration banquet and the 16th annual evening for education. Dinner reservations are $125 per person. The evening will also include a cocktail hour, live entertainment, and a silent auction. Founding Board Members Ken Pruitt, Judi Miller, Chris Fogal, and Vernon Smith will be honored at the event. Tickets are available on the Foundation’s website, www.educationfoundationstlucie.org. New programs to help connect individual donors to classrooms and students in need are also available on the website. By clicking on the “Get on the Bus” link, donors can adopt a class or fund a project for as little as $25.
a place where I hope I’m adding value and helping the cause. It’s a compelling cause and a very special place.” For more information about Save the Chimps or to make a donation. Visit the website www.savethechimps.org. Tickets for the Chimps Kitchen Dinner, held Nov. 5 at the Cobalt Restaurant in the Vero Beach Hotel & Spa, are $100 a person and $150 a couple. They are also available on the website. Volunteers are needed in a variety of capacities. Check the website or call (772) 429-0403. Writer’s note: Thanks to my college friend, Wendy Sowala of New York. While on a recent tour of Russia, she sent me an email with the subject line Save the Chimps. Molly Polidoroff and her husband Tim were also on the trip and Wendy “introduced” us via email. It’s the most unusual lead I’ve ever had.
Jones said an upcoming program will let donors pledge $25 per month to the Foundation for a year and receive a free beach towel as a token of appreciation. Current Board President Carissa Zerga of Seacoast National Bank is spearheading the Nov. 7 event. “I’ve always been passionate about education and about the students in our community. I say it all the time, that’s our future leaders,” Zerga said. “Although we’ve been around for 25 years, there are a lot of people around who don’t know who we are or what we do.” Jones, Zwemer, Zerga and the rest of the Board have dedicated themselves to spreading the word about the Foundation to all corners of the County. “We’re reaching into the households of everyday people who may not have heard of us and giving them a way to help us out,” Jones said. That, he added, is how the Foundation plans on rallying the community around the education of its youth, and its future.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – Mary Shelley’s classic horror novel, “Frankenstein”, has been adapted for film and the stage. The 19th-century story about Dr. Victor Frankenstein’s attempts to discover the secrets of life and death, is often considered the first science fiction story. It touches on important current issues of science and ethics. For those reasons, Indian River State College has made it the first “One Book, One Choice,” selection. The interdisciplinary project suggests that faculty, staff and students read the book and participate in activities on campus related to it. The Performing and Visual Arts Department will do its part with a student presentation of Victor Gialanella’s adaption of the book. David Moberg, the department chair, spoke about the production and how the students are handling it. “This is one of the shorter versions of the play,” he said. “The plot moves faster. I have a bunch of wonderful new students and I love it when it all comes together and just works out.” Moberg said the plot reminded him of the popularity of all things zombie among kids. He thinks the show, while it has a sad ending, is suitable for youngsters in 4th

or 5th grades and above and their families. The production stars Austin Peer as Dr. Frankenstein and Martin Fitzpatrick as the Creature. Peer, a student of graphic design, is designing the makeup for the Creature. Moberg said that the play presents some challenges. “At the first rehearsal, I said I can’t compete with laser shows and the special effects in movies. We really need to focus on the texture of the relationships and the communication between characters. The story is as realistic as we can get it. We can’t make a lab blow up, but if the audience cares about the characters a whole different intensity occurs. The students are taking it very seriously.” Moberg said the plot adheres closely to the Mary Shelley work. In addition to Peer and Fitzpatrick, the cast includes Kelly Fischer, James King, Enzo Everett, Michael Hurst, Maris Quijano, Frankie Hernandez, Alex Saavedra and Jerron Thomas. Moberg believes that the other characters, including a constable, gravediggers and a governess, give the production depth and texture. The production also uses sets and lighting to add texture. “We’re building four different sets,” he said. “I think it’s an effec-
tive concept. It’s skeletal, with seethrough walls and windows and realistic furnishings. When possible, there will be some projections to give background and context. “For the lighting, we’re going to keep it on the center of the stage. The rest is blue and blackness. I wish I had a million dollars to do the one laboratory scene. I can see why they made so many versions because of what you can do. As it’s scripted, it suggests they blow up the lab. I’m not sure we can do that, but everybody who does die will die.” Moberg said that the underlying message about the limits of science is making the show relevant to the students. “They’re taking it seriously,” he said. “There is a discussion about it in the play. The students are making the leaps to today’s controversial topics.” This is the first play of the new season. Next up for the drama department is a play by David Moberg, “Christmas Doesn’t Love Me Anymore.” It will be presented at the Wynne Black Box Theatre Dec. 11-12. Indian River State College presents “Frankenstein,” Oct. 22-24 at the McAlpin Fine Arts Center, Fort Pierce. Performances are Oct. 2224 at 7 p.m. and Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for subscribers and $15 for non-subscribers. For tickets, call 1-(800) 220-9915.

New chorale has ambitious plans at St. Bernadette Church Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PORT ST. LUCIE – Verdi’s Requiem is not often heard in this area because it requires a choral group of 150 singers. Thomas Bold, the music director at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in St. Lucie West, has long dreamed of a community chorus for the entire Treasure Coast. “It’s been a long-term goal for me,” he said. “When I learned there were choruses in Vero Beach and Stuart, two towns that surround me, and there used to be one in Port St. Lucie, I knew there had to be one right here. It didn’t make sense not to have them combined and at my place. It’s the largest venue in the area, seating 1,200, with room for 400 additional chairs. I started making friends and met with folks from Vero Beach and Stuart.” Bold’s vision was to have a large chorus with singers from all three

counties that would come together once a year to present a master work. It would be something too large for any of the individual choruses to perform. Bold joined forces with Mark Jones, organist at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church in Vero Beach. Jones suggested the Verdi Requiem for the group’s first concert. It will be performed Oct. 23 in St. Lucie West and Oct. 24 in Vero Beach. “I met with folks from Vero Beach and Stuart to establish relationships, in the hopes they’d understand my goals. Mark approached me about the Verdi Requiem. He said St. Bernadette was the perfect venue. It played into both of our hands. Verdi needs the size of (a bigger) group and it seemed like the perfect time.” Bold approached the Treasure Coast Community and Classical singers, and artistic director Doug Jewett, who supported the idea. Jason Hobratschk of the Vero Beach Chorale Society and Michael Carter of the Treasure Coast Chorale also came on board. Bold and Jones also consulted with Allen Rosenberg, who led the now-disbanded St. Lucie Chorale for many years. “There were no auditions, per se,” Bold said. “We needed to hear them to place them in the double chorus, but it was not really an audition. We also extended invitations to past members of the St. Lucie Chorale. We did a few ads on radio for people with a background in chorale music and we’ve extended an invitation to OPUS at Martin County and Jubilate at Jensen Beach High School. We hope to have some of them, as well.” Singers from a variety of churches have also signed on. Participating churches include St. Bernadette Catholic and First United Methodist in Port St. Lucie and Immanuel Lutheran and Cross Church in Palm City. The chorale will perform to a pickup orchestra and is extending invitations to musicians. To make rehearsals easier for everyone, they rehearse Saturday mornings at a different location each week. That way, there is a rehearsal in each county so everyone has the same amount of travel time. “We’re hoping for 150 singers,” Bold said. “School has just started and organizations are just coming back. The numbers grow every week.” Bold noted that Verdi’s Requiem is considered his greatest opera, with the soloists and drama usually found in opera. Choosing the dates for the performance was tied to the calendar. “We asked if we could do it near

Thomas Bold St. Bernadette Catholic Church Music Director a Christian celebration when you’d do a Requiem,” he said. “We were thinking of Nov. 2, All Souls Day, but because of scheduling it became Oct. 23. We are offering memorials and honorariums in the program to remember and honor a loved one. It’s traditional to do it on All Souls Day. The deadline to place one is Oct. 16 and we are asking for a donation of $10.” The performance will be conducted by Matthew Phelps, music director of West End United Methodist Church in Nashville. Two of the soloists for the Oct. 23 performance are mother and son Sandra McNiff, soprano, and Brian McNiff, tenor. Brian McNiff, who performed at the Barn and Pineapple Playhouse, is pursuing a doctorate in vocal performance at the University of Arizona. And what of Thomas Bold? The music director of the home church is used to leading, but he will have a different role here. “I’m in the chorus,” he said. “We’re asking all the conductors of the choruses to sing. We’re trying to set an example.” The Tri-County Chorale will present Verdi’s Requiem Oct. 23 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 350 N.W. California Blvd., Port St. Lucie at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 24 at St. John of the Cross Catholic Church, 7550 26th St., Vero Beach at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person, $50 per couple and $15 for children 12 and younger. From a smoky 1920’s Speakeasy to the Bowery of the 1930’s, from a World War II USO to a 1950’s Manhattan supper club, Swinging on a Star perfectly weaves various settings and scenes with some of the most popular songs of a generation. The journey also showcases music from the “Road Movies” starring Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Songs include: “Road to Morocco,” “Going My Way,” “Moonlight Becomes You,” “Swinging on a Star,” and many more.
