Christmas flash mob
Ashley Gerheart joined the staff of Renaissance Charter School of St. Lucie West with a holiday themed flash mob to surprise the students at their music assembly before finishing their last day before Christmas break. The staff had several rehearsals and tight lips to keep the secret from the students.

TRADITION — With an expanding hospital comes an increasing need for more doctors and support businesses. The Port St. Lucie City Council nodded, at its Dec. 14 meeting, to move forward on the construction of a 65,000-square foot medical office by Tradition Medical Center. “It builds on the recent roof-breaking we had at the hospital,” Mayor Greg Oravec said. He added, “(Healthcare) will be the economic engine in Port St. Lucie, St. Lucie County and indeed the Treasure Coast for years

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Daniel Holbrook, assistant city manager, painted an inspiring picture about the city’s recent Art Talk. At the last regular meeting, Dec. 14, Holbrook gave the City Council an update on his meeting with local artists in November to
discuss expanding display venues, creating events and establishing an art hub. Holbrook said the meeting got him noticing that there are lots of places the city could display art and host events. “We have space,” he said at the meeting. “We have canvas space in the city, and it’s under-utilized.” Several area artists approached the city with the idea of hosting a
meeting to discuss tapping more city facilities and resources to display and sell their work. Holbrook said almost 40 showed to the meeting, and he was astonished at the number and quality of ideas they had. “They’re living here and doing what they love,” he said. “Some fulltime. Some part-time. They wanted the city to create something.”
Linda Bartz said artists necessarily have many creative ideas. “I don’t know why you’re surprised,” she said at the meeting. “You get a group of artists together and the ideas flow, sometimes from left field.” Councilman Ron Bowen said there are few things that add energy to a city than giving artists

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – In 2015, Alexis Bentinganan of St. Lucie West was one of 14 singers to belt out the national anthem before a New York Mets spring training game at Tradition Field. On Jan. 16, the club will host auditions to select the performers who will sing the Anthem before each New York Mets spring training game and each St. Lucie Mets regular season game. With several years of singing in front of large audiences under her belt, 10-year-old Bentinganan has some advice for people who are on the fence about auditioning. “Just go for it!” Bentinganan said. “You have nothing to lose… you just have to go out and sing. It’s your chance to shine and have fun.” Approximately 50 people came out to sing in front of judges in 2015. The woman who gets to make the final decision on who makes the cut and who does not is executive assistant Cynthia Malaspino with the New York and St. Lucie Mets. The formula for a good performance, Malaspino said, is remembering the words and staying in tune.
It may sound simple enough, Malaspino noted, but “it’s a tough song to sing.” Next year will mark the 16th season Malaspino has picked the Mets’ national anthem singers. “I love the children, they are so talented and sweet,” Malaspino said. “But I try to mix it up.” Men and women of all ages are invited to tryout, Malaspino added, and she does try to choose a wide range of talented singers. “In a past year, I had someone sing who was over 80, that was amazing,” Malaspino said. Though Bentinganan has been singing publically since before she turned 6, she said there is something extra special about singing the national anthem. “I just really respect it,” Bentinganan said of the song. “I do really like to do my own thing with songs, but it’s our country’s anthem. Of course you want to put all those decrescendos and things in it but you can’t be too fancy with it.” Her father, Vimille Bentinganan, said he is always proud to watch his daughter perform. The national anthem, he added, is “a different animal altogether.” “We’re a pretty patriotic family to begin with,” Vimille said. “For her to go out there at such a young age and sing a song that means

Mayor brings good tidings of joyous rebound
M
erry Christmas, Port St. Lucie! On behalf of the City Council and staff members, I would like to share our wishes for your day, holiday season and 2016 to be filled with love, joy, peace and prosperity. Our “hyper-local” newspaper has given me a great Christmas present — this column to bring you good tidings from the City of Port St. Lucie and our community of Tradition. As I recently shared in November’s State of the City Message, many good things happened in 2015. The Great Recession, the one the experts said ended in June of 2009 and was more of a depression here, finally let us out of its grasp. As a result, macroeconomic factors put the wind at our back rather than in our face; and, in response, the streets started bustling again; new homes and businesses went up; property values climbed; tourism reached an all-time high; and the unemployment rate fell. At the same time, we realized some important successes at the local level, including: being named the safest large city in Florida (for the eleventh time in thirteen years); prevailing in the lawsuit challenging the construction of our long-awaited and much-needed Crosstown Bridge; and adopting new city rules and policies to keep us out of economic development deals like Digital Domain and the Vaccine & Gene Institute of Florida, VGTI, which utilized large upfront cash incentives, but in efforts to facilitate the growth
YOUR
Mayor Greg Oravec of existing businesses like St. Lucie Medical Center, Expert Shutters and Teleperformance, which did not rely on large upfront cash incentives but resulted in multi-million dollar capital investments by the private sector and the creation of hundreds of jobs in 2015 alone. These and other positive circumstances gave rise to national recognition. Please see www.cityofpsl.com/ goodnews/. Specific to Tradition, a quick rundown of highlights includes: an award of excellence from the National Association of Landscape Professionals; the start of the construction process for Panera Bread, the Recovery Bar & Grill next to Homewood Suites and the WaWa on Tradition Parkway; the National Association of Home Builders Silver Award for Vitalia; the opening of Talavera Clubhouse in Verano; the steady

progress of the Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Home; and who can forget how the citizens of Tradition rallied over the proposed biosolids composting facility in nearby unincorporated St. Lucie County. Even the springtime inhabitants of Tradition Field, the New York Mets, won the National League Championship. While I hope some of the preceding highlights have struck a chord, my favorite story is the success of Tradition Medical Center. As you may know, after a long and arduous state permitting process, this state-ofthe-art acute care facility opened in December 2013 to nearly full occupancy. This past October, less than two years after its grand opening, hospital officials broke ground on an expansion that will more than double the hospital’s capacity by the end of 2017. In addition to providing important healthcare services for our growing and aging population, the hospital is an economic engine that will help power our future. The hospital already has a large economic footprint, currently employing approximately 600 people at an average wage of $45,000 and more a year, which is more than a third higher than the prevailing wage in St. Lucie County
Dear Editor: My family and I have lived in Tradition since 2008 and have enjoyed looking at the festive holiday lights that adorn the town square and entrances to every gated community in Tradition. That is, every gated entrance except where we live in Victoria Parc Estates. I have wondered every year why we are left in the dark. Every year we ask the home owners association to put up decorations and are told it isn’t in their budget, yet every year our assessments increase. The main home builder in the community — D.R. Horton — also builds in The Estates, and this year chose to decorate their entrance. But once again not Victoria Parc Estates, even though we have asked and thought that since we are on one of the main
and creates an estimated payroll-related economic impact of approximately $44.4 million per year. The expansion of the hospital is expected to directly double this economic impact. Furthermore, the hospital will also help create a much larger impact by attracting related and compatible uses and industries. In fact, I am excited to report that this is already happening through the development of 100,000 square feet of private medical office space contiguous to the Hospital and a new $14 million 74,000-square-foot Keiser University facility on a nearby 8-acre parcel. Given the projected growth of our population, convenient location, quality of development in Tradition and other attributes, we should expect our Tradition Hospital and the Tradition Center for Innovation to become a regional center and continue growing for the foreseeable future. Our envisioned jobs corridor has begun to take form. I am grateful for the opportunity to deliver these good tidings on Christmas — 2015 was a good year, and, with your help, 2016 could be even better. There is an air of cooperation, hope and potential throughout the city and St. Lucie County which I have never felt before. If you would like to become involved, to help your community convert this potential into reality, please do not hesitate to contact me at (772) 871-5159 or mayor@cityofpsl.com. roads in Tradition, Community Boulevard, it would be beneficial to home sales and neighborhood morale. It is embarrassing that we are the only community without decorations and I thought that reaching out to the media may help shed some light (pun intended) into why we are not worthy of decorations. The HOA will tell you that they gave the homeowners permission this year to decorate the front entrance, but without any realistic way of doing so. We don’t even have access to the electrical outlets. Thank you for allowing me to give some attention to this matter. We are hoping that we have lights and decorations in 2016. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — It’s a gift for all the good boys and girls in St. Lucie — 5.4 percent. That is 5.4 percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment in November. For a county that had 6.7 percent unemployment the previous November, that’s a lot of reason to celebrate. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity released its November jobs report on Dec. 18. The report had plenty of stocking stuffers for St. Lucie. Among other things, the state turned in a robust 5 percent seasonally adjusted unemployment rate. The state and county employment numbers are important not just for psychological reasons. In general, most economists consider 5 to 5.5 percent unemployment rates to represent “full employment.” Full employment is when there is minimal deficient-demand unemployment. In other words, if employable folks want jobs reasonably suited to their educations and backgrounds, they can usually find them in short order, because the economy is producing adequate demand. In October St. Lucie broke back into the 5s with a 5.8 percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate. It hasn’t been in that range since 2007 when construction was in full cry. The housing bust and Great Recession hit Port St. Lucie particularly hard. Mayor Greg Oravec has repeatedly said while the country was experiencing a recession, the city was experiencing a depression.
Unemployment had been steadily curving upward from the spring of 2006, but then rapidly shot up in the summer of 2008, peaking around 11 percent by the spring of 2010. So, the county has cut unemployment in about half. Adding to the merry employment report is the Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area — St. Lucie and Martin counties — adding almost 4,000 jobs over a year. It had almost 139,000 jobs in November. “The Port St. Lucie metro area had the second-highest over the year growth in trade, transportation, and utilities employment (+5.4 percent) out of all other Florida metro areas,” the state’s employment report reads. Education and health services, however, topped all other employment sectors with a 5.9 percent increase in jobs. With the coming expansion of Tradition Medical Center and related offices, along with coming construction of the Ardie R. Copas Veterans Nursing Home in Tradition, that sector is likely to gain even more ground. Additionally, Keiser University will soon start construction on a campus in Tradition that’ll double its student capacity in Port St. Lucie. Other sectors with significant gains were leisure and hospitality, which added 5.3 percent more workers, and manufacturing with 400 more jobs. Seasonal adjustment is a statistical tool to accounting for anticipated annual fluctuations in employment through a year. The unemployment rate is cal-

Tradition green market disrupted after suspicious devices found Bruno Moore
FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TRADITION — Sunday mornings in Tradition are typically spent at an outdoor breakfast nook, or watching the kids frolic at the fountains, or strolling through vendor tents at the green market. Sunday, Dec. 20, however that Rockwellesque image was overshadowed by blue lights and bomb squads after a resident found a pair of suspicious devices on the green outside the TJ Maxx store at The Landings. Investigators determined the items, ominous-looking at first, were a pair of anti-theft devices retailers use to thwart shoplifting. “Based on both X-ray and remote inspection by our bomb technicians, both items were identified as store security devices that were removed from merchandise and tossed into the grass,” said Sheriff Ken Mascara. He stressed the importance of citizen awareness, and how public alertness contributes to public safety. “Today was a perfect example of how members of our community suspected something was not right and called authorities to report it.” That importance was echoed by Port St. Lucie Police Sargent Frank Sabol. While it appears the devices were simply discarded in the area and not placed there as part of a prank or hoax, Police Sgt. Sabol says the ramifications are serious.
“If you hear of someone talking about it as a prank or joke, it should be incumbent upon the person to convince them otherwise or contact law enforcement. It’s a huge deal,” Sabol said. Sabol says calling in a false bomb threat is still considered a bomb threat and building a fake bomb is still considered bomb building. “Law enforcement is going to take any threat seriously. They’re going to investigate who was responsible. If someone brings a device into a school it’s going to be treated just like the device it was intended to replicate.” Sabol says he’s seen kids call in threats to try to get out of going to school, or joke about being armed on campus. “It’s a felony to call in a threat in any location. We’re going to make sure that we don’t put anybody’s life in danger,” Sabol said. The incident is being investigated by the Port St. Lucie Police Department after being initially handled by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad, which assists bomb calls for multiple agencies. Bryan Beatty, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Department, said the bomb squad arrived on-scene at 10:30 a.m. and quickly located the devices. “We were wrapped up at 11:30 a.m. The green market was closed only temporarily,” Beatty said. In fact some of the market stayed open, in a certain fashion. Facebook updates during the

Hundreds roll the wheel and compete for nationally televised game show FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TREASURE COAST — Statewide droves of people from surrounding areas showed up at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center on Sunday, Dec. 13 to roll the wheel at a chance to be on the classic game show, Wheel of Fortune. The traveling “Wheelmobile” made its way through South Florida, hitting Jupiter on Saturday, Dec. 12th and then heading up to Port St. Lucie the following day. The event brought people from other areas as well, as far south as Miami and up north from the Orlando area also. There were people of all ages and walks of life in attendance. There were three short shows throughout the day during the event, in which all of the applications that were filled out were collected and random names were drawn. The lucky potential contestant was called up onto the stage to introduce themselves via the host and play a short round of the game. Each show had 10 rounds with 6 people being called up in each round, totaling 60 contestants per show. The contestants who were called up on stage also won various showthemed prizes, including small coolers and t-shirts. There was also a photo booth where potential contestants could line up and have their picture taken in front of a Wheel of Fortune cutout of the wheel itself and the pictures were given complimentary to attending patrons. Merrisa Terry of Port St. Lucie, one of the lucky attendees to be called up onto the stage, has always loved the game show.
“When I was a little girl I would watch the Wheel of Fortune every night. I loved watching the show and trying to solve the puzzles.” Terry had gone to the show with a friend, never dreaming she would actually be called up on the stage to participate. She had even expressed to her friend that if she got called, she would be too afraid to actually get up onto the stage in front of all of those people. Just moments after she expressed this, they called her name. “When my name was called I was in total shock! My heart was racing and my palms were sweating. I was just hoping I wasn’t going to faint!” People who were called up onto the stage were evaluated to be chosen for an invitation to the final auditions based on their enthusiasm and persona, quick thinking skills and attention to detail. Someone who for example, called out a letter that had already been called may not be considered as good a candidate as someone who had paid attention to the fact that the letter had already been chosen. The host made it clear that even though a person was called up on stage at the event does not mean that they would make it to the show. The contestants that were called up on stage if selected based on their performance, will be invited to participate in a final audition to be an actual contestant. The host made it clear that only the most promising candidates will be chosen so he advised them to show lots of enthusiasm and energy. Patrons who were in attendance but were not lucky

File Photo Stacey Manci of Port St. Lucie performed the national anthem on Flag Day at Tradition Field in St. Lucie West last season. Auditions take place for the upcoming season on Saturday, Jan. 16 at Tradtion Field.
ANTHEM from page A4 so much to us and to her, that’s pretty powerful.” Alexis has performed in front of crowds all over Florida. When she was 6 years old, she sang the national anthem in front of more than 18,000 people at an Orlando Magic game. Each time before a major performance, Alexis gets what she and her family refers to as “nervous energy.” “I’m excited, but also a little nervous,” Alexis said. “When I get out there and start singing the first few lyrics of the song, I just let it go.” Turning raw nervousness into “nervous energy” and channeling that energy during a performance is the best way to get past stage fright, Alexis and her parents agree. “I recall when she was young, she wasn’t that nervous. It was us the parents that were nervous for her,” said Alexis’ mother, Bambi Bentinganan. Now, Alexis speaks and sings in front of people on a regular basis between her performance schedule and her work as an advocate for juveniles with Type 1 Diabetes. She recently landed her first
part in a professional musical, playing the role of Ngana in the upcoming production of “South Pacific” at the Wick Theatre in Boca Raton. After sitting through many auditions, Vimille said the St. Lucie Mets audition provided a great atmosphere for the singers and was very well facilitated. “We showed up 15 to 20 minutes before the audition slot, went to the field, signed in, and got to hang out in the dugout for a little bit,” Vimille said. Then Alexis got to walk out to home plate and sing the song. The Bentinganans had their answer within 48 hours of Alexis’ audition- she was in. Alexis had the distinct honor of choosing between the Mets v. Yankees or the Mets v. Red Sox game, and she chose the Yankees. As for the 2016 singers, Malaspino said she has high hopes for a great turnout. Though the auditions are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Malaspino said she would stay as long as it took to hear everyone who wants a chance at the spotlight. to come.” On Oct. 21 Martin Health System had a groundbreaking for a 170,000-square foot vertical expansion to the Tradition hospital. John Loewenberg, chairman of Martin Health System’s board of directors, joked at the ceremony that because it was a vertical expansion it should be called a “roof-breaking.” The new office building approved by the council will be added to Tradition Health Park, formerly called Mann Medical One, which now has a 40,000-square-foot facility nestled between Village Parkway and Interstate 95, just west of the hospital. Jeff Bremer, city manager, said the new office building will add to a growing list of wins in Tradition. “We’re continuing to see advancements in that area,” he said. The week before the council gave Keiser University the thumbs up for a 74,000-square-foot building on eight acres also nestled between Village Parkway and Interstate 95. It’s just south of Discovery Way. That was accompanied by news that the Department of Veterans Affairs gave the state an early consent for a $25 million grant to build the Ardie R. Copas Veterans Nursing Home on Tradition Parkway. Patricia Tobin, the city’s director of planning and zoning, said Tradition will likely see many changes over the next few years. “I think it’s what we want to see,” she said. “It’s what we planned to see. It’s good to see. Things were a little slow.”
The housing bust and Great Recession, followed by the agonizingly slow recovery, put ideas on ice for several years. Along with that came a few highly-publicized economic-development busts in Tradition, including the Vaccine & Gene Therapy Institute of Florida’s bankruptcy. The city is VGTI’s largest creditor and there’s ongoing litigation in that case. But, Tobin said, much of that glum is now past. She said as the national and regional economies keep picking up, people are going to want to build. She said in the older General Development Corporation parts of Port St. Lucie, there just isn’t land enough for large enterprises. St. Lucie West, too, is nearing the last of its commercial vacancy. About two years ago, St. Lucie West had about nearly 40 percent of its 280 commercial parcels vacant. There are 41 vacant commercial properties left in St. Lucie West. Additionally, it has 16 industrial and two institutional properties left for building. That land squeeze mostly leaves Tradition to build large things. Tobin said the city is still growing in population. “We’re probably over 175,000 (people in Port St. Lucie),” she said. “That’s a lot of people with a lot of needs.” And Tradition was planned for accommodating that population increase. “They have the infrastructure,” Tobin said. “They’ve got the roads. They’ve got the land. They’ve got 20 acres in one piece.” And now it’ll have a new 65,000-square-foot medical office building, too.

and discusses topics like how to treat your partner in various situations and about local resources for caregivers. The group splits the caregivers and those with the disease up for part of the meeting, allowing the caregivers to talk openly about problems with others in similar situations. Barbara always enjoys the time she spends with others who are in the same situation that she is in. “The support groups allow people to talk to others in similar situations and let them know they are not alone in this journey,” said Donna True, Treasure Coast Program Services Coordinator. Once Barbara’s disease goes beyond early-stage the couple will have to leave the support group, a move Jim thinks will be coming soon. Barbara can no longer stay at home alone, and without family nearby and a part-time job, Jim has had to come up with creative solutions. Last week, he drove Barbara to stay with her sisters outside Orlando. He will pick her up after his three days of work. He is hoping this 2-hour trip twice a week will be a solution. Though he knows he will need help as time goes on, he wants to do everything he can to keep his wife of almost 53 years at home.

something was wrong before the move. She fell a couple times and noticed problems with her memory. Just prior to their move to Florida, Barbara was first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Barbara was always a busy woman. The mother of two, was a bookkeeper and was a real estate agent in New York and Georgia for 16 years. Jim said in the five years since her diagnosis, most of the changes he has seen are functional. She can’t drive, takes a long time to get dressed and doesn’t remember how to use household appliances like the TV remote and the microwave. There are more than 1 million caregivers like Jim providing more than 1.2 billion hours of unpaid care to those with Alzheimer’s disease. Thirty-four percent of caregivers are 65 or older nationwide and 41 percent of caregivers have a household income of $50,000 or less. Jim, 72, and Barbara, 73, are members of an early-stage Treasure Coast support group organized by the Alzheimer’s Association Southeast Florida Chapter, something that is an amazing tool for caregivers said Jim. “It is the place to be,” he said. “They support us.” The group meets twice a month

room to create. “If we give them a blank canvas, I know they’ll create a Mona Lisa out of it,” he said at the meeting. There was a wrinkle on the canvas. The city has a seven-member Public Art Advisory Board charged with crafting a public art master plan and maintaining a registry of artists qualified to submit work for public spaces. However, the board hasn’t met in a long time. Additionally, Councilwoman Michelle Berger pointed out that the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens was envisioned, in part, to be an artistic hub for the city. “I like what you’re suggesting,” Berger said at the meeting. “I’m open to look at a hub, if it doesn’t derail what we’re already working on.” Nevertheless, Berger said she’d like city staff to continue working
on reviving and expanding cooperation with artists. “I’m very excited about the energy this brings,” she said. Mayor Greg Oravec said he’s noticed a dearth of artistic events in recent years. He noted the defunct Art and All that Jazz Festival started in 2002. It ran until at least 2009. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department co-hosted the annual event with the Community Redevelopment Department and the St. Lucie Professional Art League. “I think there’s all kinds of opportunities for display,” Oravec said. The item didn’t call for a vote, but the council members unanimously nodded to Holbrook to start turning ideas from the meeting into reality, and to keep talking to artists. “Daniel, let’s go next step,” Bartz said.

St. LUCIE WEST — Ed Henson is a retired New York City detective. He’s a 6-foot, 5-inch retired New York City detective who punctuates his conversations with the saltier and more colorful phrases of the English language and has no problem offering up his opinion about any topic. Not one to fade unnoticed into the background after retiring with 20 years under his belt, he opened St. Lucie Shooting Center in 2011 to stay in the

What sets his business apart from other gun ranges and stores, he says, matter-of-factly, is him. “I mean, it’s me. The owner is involved 7 days a week. We try to be more like a family and friends type of place. I remember the faces.” Henson says. The business is vast in its coverage and treatment of firearms. The obvious draw is the shoot-

Unlike other ranges in the area, St. Lucie Shooting Center doesn’t watch the clock either. “When you’re shooting, we don’t just tap you on the shoulder and say ‘hey, your time is up,’” Henson explains. It’s that hospitality, Henson, thinks, that accounts for much of his clientele. “We do an incredible business with women and first-time users. Some people (in gun sales) are rude and condescending, but on a gun range there is no such thing as a stupid question.” Aside from sales and the shooting range, Henson’s staff offers concealed weapons safety classes, personal protection classes and night combat shooting classes. St. Lucie Shooting Center is also a fully licensed school for 40 hour security classes. One thing that Henson is dedicated to, and it shows through his business, is gun safety and gun security. To that end, one of the biggest segments of his business is in the sales of gun safes. His safes of choice are the bold and rock solid American

Henson’s advice is to buy a gun safe, if you’re going to buy a gun. “Nothing’s worse than having your gun pointed at you when you come home because it was hidden under the mattress.” Ed Henson doesn’t even claim to be a gun guy as much as he is just a businessman with the desire to treat people with a different kind of respect than they may be used to. His advice for first-time gun owners is to obviously invest in a safe, buy from a reputable dealer and practice. “It’s all about safety, safety, safety. Part of safety is practicing.” So, in conclusion, St. Lucie Shooting Center is a one-stop shop for lessons, practicing, certification, and gun sales. Alzheimer’s Association shares tips to navigate the holiday season TREASURE COAST — In addition to a new dessert recipe or family vacation photos, bring an important gift home this holiday season and become educated about the warning signs of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Visiting with relatives over the holidays may raise questions about the physical and cognitive health of family members. Although some change in cognitive ability can occur with age, serious memory problems are not a part of normal aging. Recognizing the difference between normal aging and more serious problems can help you identify when it may be time for your relative to see a doctor. The Alzheimer’s Association has seen a rise in calls to its 24-hour helpline, (800) 272-3900, during and after the holiday season when people return home and visit with friends and family whom they may not see as frequently during the year. The Alzheimer’s Association encourages anyone to call their helpline if anyone has a question
or doubt about the state of an aging family member or friend. Every individual may experience one or more of the 10 Warning Signs in different degrees (see below). If you notice any of them, please see a doctor. Alzheimer’s Association 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s 1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life. One of the most common signs of Alzheimer’s is memory loss, especially forgetting recently learned information. Others include forgetting important dates or events; asking for the same information over and over; relying on memory aides (e.g., reminder notes or electronic devices) or family members for things they used to handle on one’s own. What’s typical: Sometimes forgetting names or appointments, but remembering them later. 2. Challenges in planning or solving problems. Some people may experience changes in their ability to develop and follow a plan or work with numbers. They may have trouble following a familiar
recipe or keeping track of monthly bills. They may have difficulty concentrating and take much longer to do things than they did before. What’s typical: Making occasional errors when balancing a checkbook. 3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure. People with Alzheimer’s often find it hard to complete daily tasks. Sometimes, people may have trouble driving to a familiar location, managing a budget at work or remembering the rules of a favorite game. What’s typical: Occasionally needing help to use the settings on a microwave or to record a television show. 4. Confusion with time or place: People with Alzheimer’s can lose track of dates, seasons and the passage of time. They may have trouble understanding something if it is not happening immediately. Sometimes they may forget where they are or how they got there. What’s typical: Getting confused about the day of the week but figuring it out later. 5. Trouble understanding visual
images and spatial relationships. For some people, having vision problems is a sign of Alzheimer’s. They may have difficulty reading, judging distance and determining color or contrast. In terms of perception, they may pass a mirror and think someone else is in the room. They may not realize they are the person in the mirror. What’s typical: Vision changes related to cataracts. 6. New problems with words in speaking or writing. People with Alzheimer’s may have trouble following or joining a conversation. They may stop in the middle of a conversation and have no idea how to continue or they may repeat themselves. They may struggle with vocabulary, have problems finding the right word or call things by the wrong name (e.g., calling a “watch” a “hand-clock”). What’s typical: Sometimes having trouble finding the right word. 7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps. A person with Alzheimer’s disease

The History of New Years Celebration
The celebration of the new year on January 1st is a relatively new phenomenon. The earliest recording of a new year celebration is believed to have been in Mesopotamia, c. 2000 B.C. and was celebrated around the time of the vernal equinox, in mid-March. A variety of other dates tied to the seasons were also used by various ancient cultures. The Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Persians began their new year with the fall equinox, and the Greeks celebrated it on the winter solstice. Early Roman Calendar: March 1st Rings in the New Year
January Joins the Calendar
The first time the new year was celebrated on January 1st was in Rome in 153 B.C. (In fact, the month of January did not even exist until around 700 B.C., when the second king of Rome, Numa Pontilius, added the months of January and February.) The new year was moved from March to January because that was the beginning of the civil year, the month that the two newly elected Roman consuls—the highest officials in the Roman republic—began their one-year tenure. But this new year date was not always strictly and widely observed, and the new year was still sometimes celebrated on March 1.
Julian Calendar: January 1st Officially Instituted as the New Year
In 46 B.C. Julius Caesar introduced a new, solar-based calendar that was a vast improvement on the ancient Roman calendar, which was a lunar system that had become wildly inaccurate over the years. The Julian calendar decreed that the new year would occur with January 1, and within the Roman world, January 1 became the consistently observed start of the new year.
Middle Ages: January 1st Abolished
In medieval Europe, however, the celebrations accompanying the new year were considered pagan and unchristian like, and in 567 the Council of Tours abolished January 1 as the beginning of the year. At various times and in various places throughout medieval Christian Europe, the new year was celebrated on Dec. 25, the birth of Jesus; March 1; March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation; and Easter.
Gregorian Calendar: January 1st Restored
In 1582, the Gregorian calendar reform restored January 1 as new year’s day. Although most Catholic countries adopted the Gregorian calendar almost immediately, it was only gradually adopted among Protestant countries. The British, for example, did not adopt the reformed calendar until 1752. Until then, the British Empire —and their American colonies— still celebrated the new year in March.

The early Roman calendar designated March 1 as the new year. The calendar had just ten months, beginning with March. That the new year once began with the month of March is still reflected in some of the names of the months. September through December, our ninth through twelfth months, were originally positioned as the seventh through tenth months (septem is Latin for “seven,” octo is “eight,” novem is “nine,” and decem is “ten.”

BRIDGE TO REDISCOVERY MEMORY CARE A Testimonial
Dear Executive Director, The Palms of St Lucie West has been an essential part of my life for the past four years. Both my mom and my aunt lived in the memory care neighborhood at the Palms during this time. The Palms provided me so much peace of mind and the caregivers have become extended members of my family. Every aspect of this organization has been outstanding. The building is always clean, the food is great, and the care is exceptional! My mom and my aunt both thrived at the end of their lives in the memory care neighborhood at The Palms. The team at The Palms supported me tremendously during my mom’s journey through dementia, and made what should have been some of the worst days of my life very comforting. I depended on them for every aspect of her life. Thank you so much for all you do, your team includes some of the most incredible people I have ever met. I could not have done this without you.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Imagine if your next flight was powered by the same thing that fuels your body and the livestock at the farm down the road? You may not have to imagine long because biofuels are being created right here in your own community. Thursday, Jan. 7th, the Treasure Coast Research Park, located in Fort Pierce, is hosting a meeting to discuss and present current research and best practices involving biofuels. Expanding international regulations of commercial aviation are creating a very promising opportunity for Florida agriculture, and the Treasure Coast Research Park is now at the heart of industrial sugar and starch based Advanced BioFuel (ABF) feedstock development. In addition to some of the world’s leading researchers in the field of biofuels, including world-renowned research scientists based in St. Lucie County, over fifty industry, agriculture,
government, and community leaders will be on hand at the event on Jan. 7th to learn about and discuss the future of biofuels. Among those in attendance will be representatives and members from the U.S. Commercial Aviation Trade Association and a variety of Advance Biofuel processors. The visionary board of directors for the Treasure Coast Research Park, under the leadership of St. Lucie County’s own Mike Adams of the Adams Ranch, truly believes that leadership and a collaborative with focus on Florida’s long term need for sustainable jet fuel will make a difference both in the area’s economy and the environment. Florida offers affordable sugar and starch rich feedstock, local jet fuel production environmental offers opportunities to improve the state’s water quality; jet fuel distribution network and to expand the growth of state’s air transportation sector. The meeting will begin at 11 a.m. at the Treasure Coast Research

ALZHEIMERS from page A24 may put things in unusual places. They may lose things and be unable to go back over their steps to find them again. Sometimes, they may accuse others of stealing. This may occur more frequently over time. What’s typical: Misplacing things from time to time, such as a pair of glasses or the remote control. 8. Decreased or poor judgment. People with Alzheimer’s may experience changes in judgment or decision-making. For example, they may use poor judgment when dealing with money, giving large amounts to telemarketers. They may pay less attention to grooming or keeping themselves clean. What’s typical: Making a bad decision once in a while. 9. Withdrawal from work or social activities. A person with Alzheimer’s may start to remove themselves from hobbies, social activities, work projects or sports. They may have trouble keeping up with a favorite sports team or remembering how to complete a favorite hobby. They may also avoid being social because of the changes they have experienced. What’s typical: Sometimes feeling weary of work, family and social obligations. 10. Changes in mood and personality. The mood and personalities of people with Alzheimer’s
can change. They can become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful or anxious. They may be easily upset at home, at work, with friends or in places where they are out of their comfort zone. What’s typical: Developing very specific ways of doing things and becoming irritable when a routine is disrupted. Early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias is an important step in getting appropriate treatment, care and support services. Following are additional benefits to receiving a diagnosis as early as possible: Benefits of an early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease • Benefit from treatments that may improve symptoms and help maintain a level of independence longer • Have more time to plan for the future • Participate in decisions about their care, transportation, living options, financial and legal matters • Develop a relationship with doctors and care partners • Benefit from care and support services, making it easier for them and their family to manage the disease Anyone with questions about Alzheimer’s disease and/or seeking information should contact the Alzheimer’s Association’s 24/7 tollfree helpline at (800) 272-3900.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The federal government is one step closer to giving up the authority and control over the Ten Mile Creek Water Preserve Area in western St. Lucie County. St. Lucie County Commissioners are pleased to learn that language is included in the 2016 federal omnibus spending bill that would take the Ten Mile Creek Water Preserve Area out of federal authorities’ control and turn it over to a state agency. The 2,000-page bill is expected to be approved by Congress and the President by early next week. With help from St. Lucie County staff and lobbyists, St. Lucie County Commissioners have long urged Congressional leaders to deauthorize the project and turn it over to a state agency. The 526-acre project was designed to retain and clean water from Ten Mile Creek before sending it downstream to the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. However, the project has not been fully operational since it was completed in 2009 due to issues with the design and construction of the project.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Aquaculture now produces 50 percent of all seafood consumed globally and this percentage will continue to grow as fisheries continue to become depleted. With an increasing demand for seafood comes an increased need for aquaculturists, and IRSC and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute of FAU have a joint program that teaches aquaculture techniques. Current aquaculture projects at FAU-HBOI include pompano, cobia, shrimp, sea urchins, clams and macroalgae. In the spring semester beginning Jan. 7, IRSC will offer three courses on the FAU-HBOI campus: Principles of Crustacean
Aquaculture; Water Quality, Systems and Operations; and Aquatic Animal Health Management. Classes will be taught Tuesday through Thursday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 8:50 p.m. The Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory, located at FAU-HBOI offers certification for the shellfish and feed industry that is necessary to import and export their products worldwide. In addition, local clam and shrimp operations offer opportunities for employment for students with an aquaculture certificate or degree. For more information about the IRSC aquaculture program contact IRSC Professor Dr. Ann McMullian at 772-971-1918 or HBOI-FAU Assistant Research Professor Dr. Susan Laramore at (772) 2422525.

YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER
Haven on Hutchinson FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Would you believe me if I told you a local restaurant can save you hundreds of dollars in travel expenses? The Inn Restaurant, ensconced within the private Ocean Village community on Hutchinson Island, matches a cut-rate creative cuisine with the snug idyll of a New England lodge. The best news of all is that while it is open to the public, it is virtually undiscovered — worlds away from the fracas of Fort Pierce traffic, yet right next door. The menu, captained by Chef Mark Zollo who also owns Cornerstone Bistro 2 on Becker Road, appeals to a diverse palate, as the restaurant itself appeals to every occasion. Gourmet kitchen aficionados will want to rescue the escargots from their plate, the medley of sautéed mushrooms and garlic demi-glace on a brioche pastry. Or enjoy the macadamia panko encrusted grouper, served with whole grain rice, fresh julienned veggies, and a brilliant orange ginger sauce. For the fish-lovers among us — the fish and chips is perfect, made with homemade Yuengling beer batter. Almost every night there is an Americana special like meat loaf or prime-rib. In 2006, Zollo opened his first restaurant, Cornerstone Bistro, at
Tradition Village. He followed up with the sequel in 2008 and expanded to the Inn in 2011. After Hurricane Frances and Jeanne tag teamed Hutchinson Island’s coast in 2004, the Inn, originally built in the 1970’s, was nothing but sand dunes. A massive overhaul resulted in the main dining room, with its vaulted pecky cypress rafters, nautical themed table designs, and wall of lookout windows that affords early birds a scintillating view of the Atlantic. The Inn Restaurant offers hands down the most affordable ocean view in St. Lucie County. At night, amid the soft sounds of the surf and salt air, The Inn has a familiar remoteness, like an old hotel lobby where you make fond memories. Peace and warmth appear, as a few late stragglers enjoy each other’s company at the large horseshoe bar. Two guests, who were married at the Inn a few years back, enjoy their evening. They are one of the 20 or so couples who have their wedding at the restaurant every year. Our waiter, Vincenzo, is personable and relaxed as he carries forth the freshly warmed rolls with homemade mandarin orange butter. The jumbo lump crab hush puppies were moist and delicate with a flash-fried crust. The product made the perfect amuse-bouche, paired with a sweet jalapeno jelly. The bacon-wrapped scallops were nested in a balsamic corn and black bean salad.

Photo by Adam Laten Wilson The bacon-wrapped scallops are so succulent they don’t last long, nested in their balsalmic corn and black bean salad, like little pearls of the sea. Just one of the many innovative appetizers on the menu. The herbes-de-provence encrusted lamb rack was the most rewarding dish and grilled so tender that every morsel seemed unbounded. The au jus and demi-glace techniques define
many of the meat dishes on the menu, but the chef outdoes himself with this sauce, highlighted

Show about theater a ‘singular sensation’ STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
TREASURE COAST — Natalie Kaye Clater has been acting all of her life. Her parents were performers before her father became a director and her mother a choreographer. Her first show was in her parents’ production of “Ragtime” when she was 5. The young actor got her professional Equity Card three years ago, when she was 15. Clater comes to the Riverside Theatre Jan. 5-24 for their production of “A Chorus Line.” She plays Diana Morales, a role she has wanted to play since she was 6. The 18-year-old spoke to me recently about her life in the theater and this show that is about trying to carve out a theatrical career. “My mom and dad were performers when they met,” she said. “We grew up back stage. I put on all the wigs. We moved to North Carolina and they started a performing arts school. My brother and I were there every day. Diana was my favorite when I saw the show with my parents directing. She was spunkier. I’ve always loved (the character of) Cassie, but Diana has a little bit of spunk and fight. I always had that and now I have
more. She also has the best songs, ‘Nothing,’ and ‘What I Did for Love.’” The ground-breaking show, which won nine Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, is about performers at an audition, desperately trying to be cast in a show. While it is an insider’s look at acting, Clater said it speaks to everyone. “Being in the industry, I’ve loved the show,” she said. “It speaks to you if you’re not in the industry. (Everyone has felt), ‘I need to get that job.’” Clater was largely home-schooled and is now focused on her career. She found out about the audition for “A Chorus Line” in the new, high-tech way. “I was scrolling through Equity on my phone for auditions,” she said. “I saw ‘A Chorus Line’ and I said, ‘I’ve got to go.’” The auditions were in New York, where Clater lives and she got called back after the initial walk on to dance. People were cut and then they had people read. More people were cut. It’s a grueling process of performance and rejection. “My agent called a week later and they offered me Diana,” she said.

Bold concert series season set Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
Photo courtesy of Thomas Bold Organist Matteo Galli (shown) joins pianist Francesco Attesti in an organ/piano rendition of Verdi’s ‘Requiem’ at St. Bernadette Catholic Church Jan. 31.
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — It’s always a pleasure to hear from Thomas Bold, who brings the Concert Series at St. Bernadette to the Treasure Coast. Each year, his non-profit entity, BoldTunes brings artists, as Bold himself says, “from around the corner and around the world.” The concerts take place at St. Bernadette Church in Port St. Lucie. The new season begins with the New Year. On Jan. 3 at 3 p.m., Mimi Carew, a Canadian, will perform music, both old and new. “She’s quite a vocalist,” Bold said. “She’s classically trained and in the ilk of a Barbra Streisand or Celine Dion. She lived in Port St. Lucie for a time and I’ve been talking to her for a while. She’ll do original songs and things we’ll all recognize.” As a footnote, area residents may remember Carew, whose new professional name honors her mother, by the name Madonna Tassi. Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. brings our own
Treasure Coast Youth symphony. They will present “Dances.” This will include movements from symphonies that have dances in them and will feature works by Brahms, Rossini, Strauss, Tchaikovsky and Copland. Francesco Attesti returns to Port St. Lucie Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. The popular Italian pianist will bring a colleague with him, Matteo Galli, and they will present a piano/ organ rendition of Verdi’s “Requiem.” “They’ve been performing it around Europe,” Bold said. “We just did in it October, so it seemed interesting.” Another area favorite, Espressivo, returns Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. The vocal ensemble based in West Palm Beach will present “Psallite: Sing,” a program of classical and popular music. “They’re a fine, small professional vocal ensemble,” Bold said. “They usually do a wide variety of Renaissance, Romantic and more popular spirituals. It’s nice mix of classical and popular.” The Treasure Coast’s own Terry Barber will team with his old colleague from the Grammy-winning

The group returns after an absence of several years and Bold said the term “flute ensemble” should not scare people away. “These flutes rock the house,”

CHORUS LINE from page B3 “I said, ‘Of course.’” Clater said this is typical of what happens at an audition. “You usually have an idea of what role you want,” she said. “They cast from type. You have to know your type to know where you’d fit. I know right now, I’m too young for Cassie. I knew I was going in for Diana.” Of course, while that was the role Clater sought, no one tries out for a specific role. You could be called back to read for a part you’d never considered. “There are so many factors that go into casting,” she said. “You may be too tall. There are variables, like how you look with the other person. A lot of actors beat themselves up and sometimes it’s things you have no control over. You do your best and let it go. The point of the audition is to give a good audition.” When Clater got the part, she called her father. “My dad played Richie when he was still performing,” she said. “I asked him to send me stuff on the show. He sent me a copy of what he did. It was funny watching him. Now I’ll be on the line. It’s nice.” The spare sets in “A Chorus Line” echo the audition process and bring the story back to the per-

LUCIE WEST/TRADITION • DECEMBER 25, 2015• B9 formers, without frills. “There are not a lot of crazy sets,” she said. “They’re great, but sometimes it’s nice to go back to the bare bones of a person on the stage, trying to connect with the audience. You should be able to tell this story with your heart. It’s a beautiful concept. The show is so deep on so many levels. You connect with the characters as you hear their stories. “My best friend loves Kristine. I always connected with Diana. Everyone will be moved. We‘re trying to tell stories and make people feel. That’s what art is. This show does a particularly good job of doing this.” After the show’s run, Clater will return to New York, where the process of finding a role starts anew. She hopes to branch out into television or films. Much of it comes back to auditions. “I’ll always be a musical theater baby but I would like to take a step in any direction. Standing still won’t get you there. Even a step back is better than a pause.” Wise words for a young woman at 18. Riverside Theatre, 3250 Riverside Dr., Vero Beach, presents “A Chorus Line” on the Stark Stage Jan. 5-24. Tickets start at $35.
