A look back at 2013’s biggest stories Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

TREASURE COAST — Your Voice News & Views takes a stroll down memory lane to remember the biggest stories of 2013. The year saw searing loss and government scandal along with toxic waterways and area growth. Here is a retrospect of the year’s most impactful stories covered in Your Voice News & Views with each article’s original opening paragraphs. A hero’s farewell to St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Sgt. Gary Morales A heartbroken community, family and close to 2,000 law enforcement officers from across the country mourned the death of St.

Lucie County Sherriff’s Sgt. Gary Morales, 35, at Westside Baptist Church in Fort Pierce Monday as they bid farewell to the fallen hero who died in the line of duty on Feb. 28 doing what those close to him said God placed him on Earth to do: help and protect his fellow man. More than 4,000 attended the viewing and service. Gov. Rick Scott and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi were among those who attended to pay their respects. On the morning of Feb. 28, Morales radioed in a stop and pursuit on a maroon, late-model Toyota Corolla near Oleander Avenue in Fort Pierce at 9:28 a.m. According to dispatch chatter, 1:57 later, shots were fired on Naylor Terrace. Morales, who was seated in his patrol cruiser, gun still holstered, was fatally wounded. He was shot in the

Jail calls in Morales case show inconsistencies Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Hours of recorded jailhouse phone calls made by Eriese Tisdale reveal inconsistencies in the accused murder’s version of events before and after he gunned down Sheriff’s Sgt. Gary Morales almost a year ago. During police interrogations the day of the shooting, Tisdale, 26, told investigators he was going to a nearby store to pick up a soda

for his pregnant girlfriend, who lived a block away. Tisdale was pulled over leaving the store empty-handed. In a collect call to family members later that day, Tisdale said he was leaving the store when Morales, 35, turned on his lights. There is no evidence Tisdale made a purchase for the intended goods inside. “I just went to the store around the corner, was coming back home and he made like a U-turn. I’m coming from the opposite way,” Tisdale told a cousin. “He

just jumped out of the car and was saying, ‘Get out of the car, get out of the car, why you ain’t stop?’” Tisdale continued with his version of events. “I said, ‘No I ain’t getting out of the car,’ and I just took off and I just kept riding, then they went to chasing me,” he said. On the morning of Feb. 28, Morales radioed in the stop and pursuit on a maroon, late-model Toyota Corolla near Oleander Avenue in Fort Pierce at 9:28

TRADITION — Last summer, the Rev. Maryanne Kehlenbach took on the challenge of building the new Living Faith Church in Tradition quite literally from the ground up. While the church owns property at the corner of Southwest Community Boulevard and Southwest Rowley Way, it has been meeting in private homes. For the former banker now known as Pastor Maryanne, building a new church has meant persuading people that a church is its people, not its buildings. Kehlenbach sat down to talk recently about what the last six months have held. “I started a small group in my home,” she said. “I started a Family and Faith Together program, with kids 6-16. Families come together for the opportunity to learn the faith together but, most importantly, to gain traditions for the home. There are things you can do in the home, every day.” Kehlenbach said that each child gets a Faith Chest, a smaller version of a hope chest a bride used to get. “There’s a children’s Bible, an electric

Tisdale, who said he shot the deputy in self-defense, is in a Martin County jail awaiting trial, which is expected to begin later next year. Lagoon doom Even amid the shadow of a government shutdown, concerned citizens managed to thrust the Treasure Coast’s toxic waterways into the national spotlight during a Capitol Hill briefing on the pollution plaguing the Indian River Lagoon. More than 20 state and federal law makers attended, including Minority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. “I think your being here and they’re (Congress) support for this, elevates this to national significance,” Pelosi said to close to 200 “River Warriors” who traveled by bus and plane to have their voices heard at the meeting. dian River Lagoon and St. Lucie River. Throughout the summer, thousands protested and lobbied politicians to save the river. Billions of gallons of dirty water were purged into Treasure Coast waterways, causing local businesses to shut its doors. Waterways also got so toxic, residents and tourists couldn’t swim in the cesspool. Initial coverage began in the Aug. 2 issue of Your Voice News & Views. Port St. Lucie city manager’s controversial departure The city of Port St. Lucie council chambers erupted as outraged audience members vocalized their distain of the council after it cast its 4-0 decision approving a separation agreement with city manager Greg Oravec, effective Feb. 8. “He did an excellent job and he’s being pushed out for what?” an audience member shouted at last week’s special meeting, which was held in place of Mayor JoAnn Faiella’s state-of-the-city address. The speech will be rescheduled, a city representative said. “This is ridiculous. It’s a travesty,” someone sneered. “When will Mr. Bowen be pushed out?” yelled another from the back of the crowd referring to

PORT ST. LUCIE — J.W. Salveson, the winner of the TCPalm’s Christmas House Contest, presented the prize he won from TCPalm’s Christmas House Contest to Hakam Daley. Hakam is the St. Lucie West Centennial High School student with cerebral palsy who was crowned homecoming king last year. Salveson was contacted because Hakam wanted to visit his house, but needed to know if it was wheelchair-accessible. Salveson made his house wheelchair accessible so that Hakam could come visit it Friday during which time, Salveson planned to give Hakam the Galaxy Tablet he won the morning from the contest. When a friend of Hakam heard of Salveson’s plan, she contacted JoAnn M. Faiella, the mayor of Port Saint Lucie and other local organizations. Salveson was surprised this evening at his home by Mayor Faiella and Vice Mayor Linda Bartz, who presented him with a plaque for all that he has done for our community. Present at the event were representatives from Hibiscus Home, Dogs and Cats forever and the owners of some local businesses. It was a great moment shared with resi-

ager, the ghost of Greg Oravec has returned to haunt the Port St. Lucie City Council. On Monday, three council members, including the mayor, were charged with both criminal and civil infractions for violating the state’s open records law, known as Sunshine Law, in connection with Oravec’s February release, documents from the state attorney’s office state. Mayor Joann Faiella and Councilwoman Shannon Martin were charged with civil infractions in connection with Oravec’s release. Martin admitted her wrongs and paid a $250 fine. Faiella plans to fight her charges. Councilman Ron Bowen received a criminal misdemeanor charge and faces up to 60 days in jail. He was suspended from the council by Gov. Rick Scott in November. The city is scheduled to hold a special election on Feb. 25 to fill his seat. Initial coverage began in the Nov. 29 issue. Your Voice News & Views broke the story on Nov. 25 at Facebook.com/YourVoiceWeekly Detox center derailed in Torino Torino residents won a monthslong war they waged against a proposed detoxification center in their neighborhood when the Port St. Lucie City Council shot down the plan at its regular Sept. 23 meeting. The council unanimously denied a special exception that would

allow the detox portion of the project. Council was also unified when they denied the group home site plan. “I was very proud of the mayor and city council. I think they did the right thing,” Torino resident Diane Goldberg said after the meeting, which endured for more than four hours. “I certainly thought that I worked very hard to bring up points that were steadfast for them to deny the facility.” Residents argued many of the project’s pitfalls, including its vast size. Mayor JoAnn Faiella agreed. “My thing is, it’s not compatible to that area and that’s the bottom-line for me – the intensity,” Faiella said. The founder of New Life Addiction Treatment Center, which is located in Port St. Lucie, wanted to build a facility with two buildings on the 3.93-acre property he owns on the northeast corner of Northwest East Torino Parkway and Zenith Drive. New Life currently has six sober homes in the city. The proposed complex was to include a 30-bed detox and a rehabilitation center. The first phase would have been a 9,900-square-foot, one-story building with 30 beds, where patients would stay five to seven days to detox from drugs. The second phase was to be a single-story 14,000 square feet,

St. Lucie Schools welcome new superintendent Heeding the advice of its national search consultant, the St. Lucie County School Board voted to suspend its search for a new superintendent at a special meeting last week (Week of Aug. 19). The board is expected to promote its interim superintendent Genelle Yost to the post until her retirement in June 2015. “I made the recommendation because I felt all along that Genelle has the great leadership skills to be a great superintendent,” search consultant Jim Huge said. “My belief was rather than hire somebody else now and have a transition and really go through two transitions, (hire Yost) because she’s already made the transition into the superintendency now.” Following former superintendent Michael Lannon’s summer retirement, St. Lucie County Schools welcomed a new superintendent who was held in high

regard with the community and school board as a loving person who posseses the leadership skills to head the county’s schools down a path of success. New superintendent Genelle Yost has spent her entire educational career in St. Lucie County. It has spanned 39 years. Initial coverage began in the Aug. 30 issue of Your Voice News & Views. Dengue fever outbreak Dengue fever’s tight grip on the Treasure Coast has finally loosened. The Florida Department of Health in Martin County announced an end last week to a months-long dengue fever advisory in Rio and Jensen Beach. The advisory was issued in August and put residents on high alert of the mosquito-borne illness that infected a total of 22 on the Treasure Coast. Cases were from out-of-state, St. Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach counties, said Karlette Peck, health officer for the Florida Department of Health in Martin County. The onset of symptoms ranged from May to September, Peck said. “The risk has significantly decreased. It doesn’t mean it’s gone, but if you get bit by a mos-

candle and a piece of fabric like an altar cloth in the color of the season,” she said. “There’s a journal, some prayers and some markers. They decorate the boxes to express who they are.” At home, families can set out the altar cloth and candle and talk about the highs and lows of the day. Kehlenbach said the kids love this family time, and they also enjoy private time. “One boy has his chest up in his bedroom,” Kehlenbach said. “He prays and writes in his journal.” Kehlenbach has other activities to engage youngsters. “We started reading the Bible from the beginning, with Genesis,” she said. “We read the story of the Creation, and for each day, I had them pick out a colored band to remind them of the day, like blue for the waters. When it was all done, they lined them up and made bracelets to remember the Creator God. It was a lot of fun to do that.” Getting involved in the community has involved more than religious observances. “We hosted an ice cream social and for SafeSpace’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, we hosted the water stop in St. Lucie County,” Kehlenbach said. “For Thanksgiving, we did ‘fixins.’ Our goal was to provide ‘fixins’ for 85 families. “We talked about an abundant God and did enough for 95. We brought it to the Food pantry in Jensen Beach with the Bridge Outreach Ministry. Other churches participated and close to 200 families were fed on Thanksgiving. These are the marginalized working poor. All their money is going to rent and there is no money to put food on the table. On Fridays, we help at the Food Pantry.” The church hosted Trunk or Treat on Halloween in Tradition Square and Kehlenbach could not believe how many people were there. They also held a Christmas Eve service in Town hall and will have a Seder for Passover to commemorate the Last Supper,

as well as an Easter service on the church property. That is where the challenge begins. “People are wary about meeting in homes and they want a church building,” Kehlenbach said, “It’s hard to understand that the church is people. We’re the body of Christ. We’re called to be out serving together to hear God’s word. It’s tough. People are looking for a building.” Kehlenbach said there is no time frame for building the new church and it will cost a lot of money. “We are going to do it in stages,” she said “We’ll have an outdoor worship area amd then a modular building. Then we’ll build a permanent structure. It’s also our goal to put in a pre-school.” Kehlenbach said the last six months have been rewarding. “I think one of the things I’m loving is that people are not compartmentalizing the church,” she said. “They’re recognizing that as people of God, it is a way of life every single day, not just on Sunday. That’s why we named it Living Faith. How are you living your faith every single day and in every interaction that you have? It’s been fun to hear people share stories of God in their life and about how they are seeing things differently now. Kehlenbach said that her congregants are beginning to understand that the church will be built in God’s time. “People are starting to understand and trust a God who is faithful to us,” she said. “It’s God’s time, not our time. That’s so wonderful, for people not to be fretting.” Kehlenbach said that she is looking forward to the future. “It’s been great,” she said, “There’s no place I’d rather be.” For more information about Living Faith Church, visit the website www.LivingFaithTradition.com or call (772) 252-5200 and leave a message. TRADITION — Three thieves gifted themselves with two new smartphones from Target using their five-finger discount, police said. Nearly a month after the crime, Port St. Lucie Police hope to nab their suspects and recover the goods, but they need your help to do it. On the night of Dec. 4, police say three women took two Samsung Galaxy S3 cellular phones from the Target located at 10720 S.W. Village Center Drive. Store workers alerted the police, who arrived at the store to investigate at approximately 8:55 p.m. Store surveillance footage show the women going to the electronics department, taking the

phones from the counter and leaving the store in a dark red four-door sedan. “Usually, (the phones) are in the case, but I guess they weren’t stocked yet,” Master Sgt. Frank Sabol said. The phones sell for $449.99 at Target, if purchased without a two-year contract. All three are described as black females; one with long black hair down her back and the other two with hair that appears to be past shoulder length. All appear to be in their early to mid-20’s with medium to heavy builds. Police are following up on every lead, Sabol said. If you know the suspects shown in the surveillance video, contact the Port St. Lucie Police Department at (772) 871-5001 or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at (800) 273-TIPS.

The History of New Years Celebration

The celebration of the new year on January 1st is a relatively new phenomenon. The earliest recording of a new year celebration is believed to have been in Mesopotamia, c. 2000 B.C. and was celebrated around the time of the vernal equinox, in mid-March. A variety of other dates tied to the seasons were also used by various ancient cultures. The Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Persians began their new year with the fall equinox, and the Greeks celebrated it on the winter solstice. Early Roman Calendar: March 1st Rings in the New Year

January Joins the Calendar

The first time the new year was celebrated on January 1st was in Rome in 153 B.C. (In fact, the month of January did not even exist until around 700 B.C., when the second king of Rome, Numa Pontilius, added the months of January and February.) The new year was moved from March to January because that was the beginning of the civil year, the month that the two newly elected Roman consuls—the highest officials in the Roman republic—began their one-year tenure. But this new year date was not always strictly and widely observed, and the new year was still sometimes celebrated on March 1.

Julian Calendar: January 1st Officially Instituted as the New Year

In 46 B.C. Julius Caesar introduced a new, solar-based calendar that was a vast improvement on the ancient Roman calendar, which was a lunar system that had become wildly inaccurate over the years. The Julian calendar decreed that the new year would occur with January 1, and within the Roman world, January 1 became the consistently observed start of the new year.

Middle Ages: January 1st Abolished

In medieval Europe, however, the celebrations accompanying the new year were considered pagan and unchristian like, and in 567 the Council of Tours abolished January 1 as the beginning of the year. At various times and in various places throughout medieval Christian Europe, the new year was celebrated on Dec. 25, the birth of Jesus; March 1; March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation; and Easter.

Gregorian Calendar: January 1st Restored

In 1582, the Gregorian calendar reform restored January 1 as new year’s day. Although most Catholic countries adopted the Gregorian calendar almost immediately, it was only gradually adopted among Protestant countries. The British, for example, did not adopt the reformed calendar until 1752. Until then, the British Empire —and their American colonies— still celebrated the new year in March.

The early Roman calendar designated March 1 as the new year. The calendar had just ten months, beginning with March. That the new year once began with the month of March is still reflected in some of the names of the months. September through December, our ninth through twelfth months, were originally positioned as the seventh through tenth months (septem is Latin for “seven,” octo is “eight,” novem is “nine,” and decem is “ten.”

ST. LUCIE WEST — The wait for a suitable home for one St. Lucie West school’s basketball team will last until at least next year when the city council reconvenes for business. At its last meeting of the year on Dec. 9, the council voted to table a request by The College Preparatory Academy of the Treasure Coast to switch from one city park to another. Vice Mayor Linda Bartz moved to table the issue until the city can create a policy to filter similar requests from schools that seek to use city parks. “I have a concern that we must open this to other schools,” Bartz said. Councilwoman Michelle Berger

echoed the same sentiment. “While this may be a good idea for this particular school, I want to also have this council consider options for other schools,” Berger said. Mayor JoAnn Faiella, who is on the school’s board of directors, was going to abstain from a vote. But she did agree that creating a policy for all schools is a good idea. “I’m open to it. If we can accommodate, why not?” Faiella said. The school has a lease agreement with the city to use Charles E. Ray Park located on Manville Drive in Port St. Lucie. Its 12-member basketball team currently practices at the park. The park opens at 8 a.m. To better accommodate par-

TISDALE from page 1 a.m. According to dispatch chatter, 1:57 later, shots were fired on Naylor Terrace. Morales, who was seated in his patrol cruiser, gun still holstered, was fatally wounded. He was shot in the side of the head, neck and arm. Evidence released in August by the state attorney’s office may explain why Tisdale had no receipt or goods from the store and shed light on why Morales pursued Tisdale. Raymond Gleason, 39, a self-described crack addict originally from Dania Beach, said he met up with Tisdale the morning of Feb. 28 to get crack cocaine. Gleason told sheriff’s investigators during a recorded interview that Tisdale had been his regular drug dealer since Gleason began living in Fort Pierce during the beginning of February. Gleason said Tisdale gave him a handful of crack in plain sight near where the shooting took place. No money on hand, Tisdale told Gleason to pay him later. A search of Tisdale’s girlfriend’s home on Mura Drive, where Tisdale was staying, recovered a .44 Magnum pistol and ammunition, a sawed-off Remington 870 shotgun loaded with four rounds of ammunition and ammunition for a .45 caliber pistol, documents state. A trace of the shotgun showed the gun was reported stolen from the home of a Riviera Beach police officer in July 2007. Authorities also found $500 stashed in a Bible, 17 pieces of crack cocaine, a digital scale and a makeshift greenhouse in a closet where Tisdale was growing his own marijuana, an evidence report states. Tisdale was unemployed at the time, documents state. During his first week in custody, Tisdale placed 25 calls to family members, totaling more than six hours. In early calls, Tisdale said he accepted his fate. “Obviously, you know I ain’t never getting out, you know what I mean, I’m just glad – at least I’m alive or whatever, but …” As the conversations progressed, Tisdale reflected on being absent from his unborn son’s life, adding if he were a free man, law enforcement officers would have prevented him from making a living. “Now that I’m sitting here thinking about it, I’m like, you know, this probably ain’t the place for me because, I can be out and do stuff with my son and I’d be

no life if I can’t even provide and I can’t even, you know what I mean, make sure that he’d be all right,” Tisdale said. During the recorded phone calls, Tisdale told a family member other conflicting statements. “I jumped out of the car and was about to run and then he had got out of the car,” Tisdale said. “... And that’s when the other deputies came, to whatever, and you know, I was just in fear for my life, ‘cause I didn’t know if he was going to get out of the car and try to kill me.” Throughout his conversations, Tisdale maintained his self-defense claim. “I ain’t injured at all. I ain’t got no bruises, no nothing and I told the police, they interviewed me and whatever, and I told them I didn’t wish death on nobody,” Tisdale said. “It wasn’t like that ... It was just the way that he approached me, like he wanted to inflict harm on me. It wasn’t like it was intentional to try and harm nobody.” Tisdale, who is facing the death penalty, voiced his fear of such a sentence. “Hopefully I get it to where I get to sit in here and hopefully they don’t give me no penalty and try to kill me,” Tisdale said. He also talked about penning the Morales family a letter. Tisdale, who never mentioned Morales by name during his first week in jail, said the letter will contain his life story. “I’m going to tell them how I feel and express my sorrow for them, because, obviously you know I’ve had family members taken out of my life before, numerous times,” Tisdale told his girlfriend. “… They probably don’t want to hear from me, but I want to give them a clearer picture of who I am,” Tisdale said in another conversation with his mother. He said he’ll write and send the letter “when the time is right.”

HOOPS from page 14 ent and student schedules, the school requested to use Sportsman’s Park at 6:30 a.m. The park is located on Prima Vista Boulevard and opens at 7:30 a.m. In order to use Charles E. Ray earlier, a city staffer must open the park and lower the basketball goals, which would cost overtime. That’s why the basketball court at Sportsman’s is ideal, the school’s principal, Erika Rains, said. “The goals don’t need to be lowered. We can put a padlock on the gate and come and go anytime,” Rains said. “There’s no community impact and no financial impact.” “We didn’t want to cost the city or us,” Rains said. Although the lease

amendment was supported by staffers in the parks department, the matter was still tabled. “I think it would be appropriate for us to go back and review this matter and come back to you with a suggestion on how to handle these requests,” city manager Jeff Bremer said. “In this one, it was an amendment to an existing lease. We didn’t see any particular ramifications, because they are doing it in the early morning and in this case the park is not open,” Bremer added. Rains, who felt action should have been taken during the meeting, said she’s willing to wait because of the city’s display of generosity. “We don’t pay for Charles E. Ray,” Rains said. “The city gifted us with that.”

nominated for the Arts Council of Martin County’s mARTies “Outstanding Visual Artist” of 2014. She is known for her richly textured, realistic oil paintings of Florida’s majestic avian feathered friends, painted with toothpicks, feathers, painting knives, fan brushes, and anything needed to capture the intricate details of her subject matter. Still-lifes and Encaustic Wax Painting are her latest passions. View jane-ejanblatt.com, the Helping People Succeed “Art for Living Calendars” of 2013 and 2014, the Rare Earth Gallery in downtown Stuart, or call (772) 341-7022 to view or purchase Jane’s art. Paulette Winn, previous owner of Banbury Cross Bakery in Hobe Sound, began painting with watercolors but soon switched to oils to create astonishingly haunting florals, landscapes, and scenes of daily life and wild life, not always mutually exclusive! She was recently awarded “Honorable Mention” for her “Trio of Irises”, which captures the exuberance of the flowers straight from her own backyard. She is an avid gardener who photographs and paints her own blooms. Drawing is her forte, which is becoming a lost art in our comput-

er-generated days of high-technology, digital art, and projectors. Susie Fowler grew up in Miami surrounded by the beauty of nature and the ocean which led to her love of sea life. She was captivated by her sister’s underwater photo of a lionfish and painted it larger-than-life as a quest for public awareness of its harmful effects along with its beauty. Entitled “Kaleidoscope,” it may be viewed in the Helping People Succeed 2014 “Art for Living Calendar.” One of Susie’s other paintings, “Spring Leaves”, was selected for the same HPS calendar in 2013 and was awarded first place in a juried art competition. She is known for her vibrant use of color and eye for intense detail. Her paintings may be viewed and purchased at Taste Restaurant in Hobe Sound or by calling (772) 486-5366. The public is welcome to view fine art, sip champagne, and listen to the music of Anthony Martin at this Thursday, Jan. 2, Champagne Reception of “4 Women 4 Art.” A portion of all sales will benefit Molly’s Gallery which is located at 430 S.E. Osceola St. in Stuart. A $5 donation is greatly appreciated. For further information, contact (772) 223-6659 or www. MollysHouse.org.

JazzScat As Father Time shuffles out and the New Year’s Baby feels the tap of the first beat on his behind, it’s our turn to start singing ‘Auld Lang Syne’ and share a few Happy New Year kisses. The start of a New Year is filled with excitement and possibility, and it’s a great time to rededicate ourselves to what’s really important – our mission in life, if you will. To that end, I’d like to share this month a little about the real mission of the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society. It’s the driving beat behind our organization, and it’s the reason we don’t mind working all year long to help enrich the community with our time and talent. The Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society presents Jazz and Blues music to the public in a variety of ways, including: festivals, performances, free jam sessions, handson workshops, clinics, community education, and outreach initiatives. Our objectives are to foster greater awareness and enjoyment in the community for jazz and blues through education and performances, and to provide scholarships to deserving college-bound students who wish to further their knowledge and skill in the music field. We continue to award merit scholarships to worthy area high school graduate musicians and singers, who have displayed high academic achievement, good citizenship and promising musicianship. Some scholarships are provided by donors interested in providing opportunities for those who earn the financial aid through an educational program designed by the Society in conjunction with our educational chairman, Al Hager, an educator for more than 30 years. Other scholarships are funded by mem-

berships in the Jazz Society and from revenues earned from the Saturday morning Jazz Market in Fort Pierce, which is managed by the Society. In addition to scholarships, winners receive a year’s membership to the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society. It’s our way of playing our own version of Father Time to these adorable New Year’s babies, for they are the promise of tomorrow and the ones in whom we trust our future and the legacy of our music. The Society provided $9,000 worth of scholarships for 2013, $13,000 for 2012, $9,000 for 2011, $7,000 in 2010, $6,000 for 2009 and so on! Students are welcome all year long to come and sit in on any of our Jazz Jams, and there is no admission charge for them when presenting a student ID card at the door. The Sunrise Theatre and the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society supports and underwrites this arrangement. If you share our vision and would like to provide a full or partial scholarship to help a student afford going on to college, please do so. It is tax-deductible as we are a nonprofit, 501c3 organization. All of our scholarships are awarded in increments of $1,000 each. Every dollar donated toward this scholarship fund will eventually become another $1,000 scholarship. You can donate safely and securely online, at any one of our jam sessions, or any one of our events. Heck, we’ll even come pick up your donation, if you’d like. Please see one of our volunteers for help with this! On behalf of all of us who make up the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society, I wish you a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year. May it be filled with laughter, music, and dancing, and may your wishes come true and your resolutions be easy to keep. Thank you very much for your support and please know that we are aware that we

cannot do this without your very special commitment to support our endeavours. And the beat goes on … Don Bestor, a pianist/keyboardist with 27 years of “on the road” experience, 17 years of producing shows, and 12 years as a studio owner/engineer and president of the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society. Don was an arranging major at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Italian pianist returns to Treasure Coast Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE WEST — When Italian pianist Francesco Attesti performs at St. Bernadette Church in St. Lucie West Jan. 6, it will be the fourth time he has played in the St. Bernadette concert series. The respected musician first came to the Treasure Coast in an unusual way. Tom Bold, founder and director of that series, recalled in an email how he met the performer. “At the end of 2010, Francesco contacted the local Rotary in Port St. Lucie, as he frequently does to find venues all over the world. He is a Rotarian in Italy and this networking has worked very well for him. One of their members, Paula Andreozzi, who works with me in the music ministry said, ‘Would we like to present an Italian pianist in our concert series?’” Bold went to Attesti’s website and what he saw convinced him to bring him to Port St. Lucie with Rotary as a partner. His first concert, on Valentine’s Day 2011, was an all-Chopin program. Some 300 people attended a concert and Rotary fundraiser. “The audience was astonished,” Bold said. “Not only was his playing indeed world-class, but his English was pretty good and he was very per-

sonable. The following year, Francesco again contacted Rotary and we agreed to present him in the concert series. By now, the news spread of this young Italian pianist and the audience doubled.” This time, Attesti will perform Grieg’s only piano concerts and Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” In a phone call from Poland, where he was performing, Attesti spoke about his career, which began as a child in Cortona, Italy. “I had my uncle and my grandfather,” he said. “My uncle was an organist. That’s why I started. I played the organ at 6 and the piano at 7. I kept going because it was a big passion.” Attesti studied in Florence, Rome and Salzburg. He specialized in romantic composers such as Chopin and in the music of the early 20th century, including Debussy, Ravel and Poulenc. “I am very much into the romantic and impressionistic music,” he said. “Ravel’s ‘Bolero’ is one of the most demanding and complicated for the piano. You need an incredible instrument, acoustics and a great pianist.” Attesti said that Tom Bold of St. Bernadette suggested the Grieg/ Gershwin program. Pairing the works is a bit of a challenge. “It’s quite unusual to have two piano concertos in one evening,” he said. “It’s quite demanding. Grieg is one of the most demanding. Gershwin was classically

trained and ‘Rhapsody’ has all the difficulty of a piano concerto. I’ve never played it in public. It’s classical but it has tough moments with the jazz and rhythm. The piano is really, really prominent and you need to be into the music to play it well. He makes some particular tricks in this music to make it sound like improvisation. He wanted to write something with jazz and he did an incredible job. Attesti will be accompanied by the Photo courtesy Francesco Attesti Academy Orchestra. Francesco Attesti performs at St. Bernadette Church, 350 “The pieces were N.W. California Blvd., Port St. Lucie, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. written for piano and orchestra,” he have contacts around the world said. “The orchestra is really playnow. I’ve met interesting people ing all the way through. HEALTH from page 28 Jensen Beach office,” added Dr. Pare’. Women’s Health Specialists has purchased property near the Tradition Medical Center at 10771 S.W. Trade St., which is almost directly across from the Tradition Town Square. The Women’s Health Specialists Tradition office will consist of 4,300 square feet of space and will provide a complete range of prenatal and gynecologic care. The construction of a new medical facility and new jobs for St. Lucie County is a positive sign of continued economic recovery. Peter J. Tesch, president, St. Lucie County Economic Development Council, said, “Our expectations are that Women’s Health Specialists is the first of a number of medical and medical-related companies that will be either expanding or relocating to St. Lucie County to provide medical support and other services for the Tradition Medical Center. This is a very positive sign of St. Lucie County’s future growth and a trend for future business expansion.” “We look forward to helping Tradition Medical Center and Women’s Health Specialists continue to grow to serve our residents.” Women’s Health Specialists’

Photo illustration created by Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer The UF/IFAS St. Lucie County Cooperative Extension Office is seeking input from residents for a campaign to help get the word out to protect sea turtles from boaters back sea turtles. Loggerhead sea turtles are listed as threatened on the Federal Endangered Species List. Juvenile loggerhead and green turtles use near shore Atlantic reefs and the Indian River Lagoon as developmental habitat throughout the year. Sea turtles are in our waters year-round; they occur in the Indian River Lagoon as well as the Atlantic Ocean; and they are hit by boats on a regular basis. The best slogans are those that

are short, memorable and can draw attention to the issue. An educational message would be encouraged. The new slogan will be used for not-for-profit educational outreach efforts. To submit a slogan, please send your entry form to Ken Gioeli, UF/IFAS St Lucie County Cooperative Extension, 8400 Picos Road, Suite 101, Fort Pierce, FL 34945. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — zThe UF/IFAS St. Lucie County Cooperative Extension Office is encouraging residents input on the development of a catchy, new slogan designed to promote the use of polarized lenses to help boaters spot and avoid sea turtles in the Indian River Lagoon and Atlantic Ocean. Accidental boat strikes threaten protected sea turtles. The use of polarized lenses can help reduce glare off the water surface enabling boat captains to spot sea turtles. The goal of this slogan is to increase awareness of the benefits of polarized lenses to conserve sea turtles. The winner of this contest will receive a pair of polarized sunglasses. Entries must be post marked by Saturday, Jan. 18. Three species of sea turtles can be found in the Indian River Lagoon and Atlantic Ocean off the coast of St. Lucie County’s beaches. All are listed on the Federal Endangered Species List. These protected sea turtles include endangered green and leather-
