ST. LUCIE WEST — Since an elevated number of copper pipe leaks have been springing up across St. Lucie West, the Services District said it plans to send off corroded pipe samples for testing once it finds the right company. District manager Dennis Pickle said he’s received approximately 22 complaints in the past three weeks. Pickle said those are just the calls he’s received. “We’re soliciting some proposals and just haven’t received the proposals back yet,” Pickle said. Last month the district contracted an engineering and planning firm to analyze the district’s water to see if it could be the cause of the corrosion, which

Police charge Wells Fargo bank employee with fraud, theft By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer
nrodriguez@yourvoiceweekly.com
ST. LUCIE WEST — Although authorities nabbed the bank employee they believe siphoned thousands of dollars out of MaryAnn Schones’s bank accounts, the St. Lucie West resident still has sympathy for the suspected thief, who stole more than $8,000 and violated her trust. “I feel sorry for him,” Schones, 77, said. “I’m not a person that goes after somebody.” On Feb. 8, Port St. Lucie Police detectives arrested St. Lucie West Wells Fargo bank employee, Marland Hugh Anderson, 27, on six felony charges. Police say some of Anderson’s 29 counts include crimes against the elderly, illegal use of credit cards and impersonation to obtain property. Police say there may be more charges pending for Anderson, who was released from the St. Lucie County jail Feb. 12 on his own recognizance, jail officials said. “We suspect there are four other victims,” spokesman Sgt. Frank Sabol said of the ongoing investigation. “He (Anderson) wouldn’t talk (to investigators).” Schones contacted authorities on Dec. 14 when she noticed money was routinely missing from her accounts from Aug. 31 to Dec. 10, Sabol said. Schones said the cash was withdrawn from ATM machines, which Schones said she never uses. Police believe Anderson, a St. Lucie West resident, made a temporary debit card in Schones’s name and created a pin for it. St. Lucie West Publix surveillance footage shows Anderson withdrawing money on seven separate occasions, an incident report states. The incident report also states Anderson made withdrawals in $300 to $400 increments from Schones’s accounts a total of 13 different times. Schones said she was shocked
Marland Anderson when she found out police arrested Anderson for the crimes. “It was hard for me to believe it was him,” Schones said. “He was a very nice person — a gentleman — and always answered all of my questions.” Schones said she can only hope that something like this doesn’t happen to anyone else. “All I can say is you have to check your accounts every single month,” she said. In light of Anderson’s arrest, Wells Fargo released a statement. “Marland Anderson no longer works for the bank and we are informed that he has been arrested by authorities,” Wells Fargo said in a prepared statement. “We are cooperating with local law enforcement and doing whatever we can to assist the data-gathering process that is part of the investigation relating to the arrest.” “We expect all of our team members to adhere to the highest possible standards of ethics and business conduct and to comply with all applicable laws, rules and regulations that govern our business,” the statement continued. “In cases where it is proven that a customer has been a victim of fraud perpetrated by an employee, he/she will be fully reimbursed.”

ST. LUCIE WEST — In honor of Black History Month, one local program dedicated to helping abused and neglected children will honor its black volunteers for the stellar work they perform. Representatives from the state’s 19th Judicial Circuit Guardian ad Litem program, based out of St. Lucie West said its black volunteers are vital to the state-funded program. “We’re honoring our local black heroes,” volunteer recruiter Gail Griffith said. “We consider our black child advocates heroes.” The ceremony, which is open to the public, will take place on Feb. 26 at the program’s St. Lucie West office and will also aim to recruit more volunteers, Griffith said.
The 19th Circuit services children in Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. County-wide, the program has 300 volunteers, 40 of which are black, Griffith said. Volunteers visit just under 800 children in St. Lucie County who are in the foster care system. Griffith said all of the children have experienced some sort of neglect or abuse during their short life spans. The program’s volunteers visit the children at least once a month, take note of their needs and advocate for the children to local judges, Griffith said. Interim circuit director Patty Walker said oftentimes the program’s volunteers are the only people the children and teens feel comfortable confiding in. Many of the children bounce from foster homes and move two to three

Pope resigns; residents react nrodriguez@yourvoiceweekly.com
ST. LUCIE WEST — In a virtually unprecedented move that shook the Catholic Church to its core, Pope Benedict XVI resigned from the papal office effective Feb. 28, citing health issues. Shockwaves were felt around the globe, including here in St. Lucie West and Tradition. “After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry,” Benedict, 85, announced in Latin from the Vatican on Feb. 11. Widespread reports claim Benedict has a pacemaker, a secret the Roman Catholic Church kept from the public. St. Bernadette Catholic Church parishioners participating in Ash Wednesday services on Feb. 13 were saddened by the sudden announcement. “We were shocked, of course,” St. Lucie West resident Deborah Lyle said. “It’s been, what, 600 years?” German-born Benedict was
named the 265th pontiff after Pope John Paul II’s death in 2005. Benedict, whose birth name is Joseph Ratzinger, is the first pope in more than six centuries to step down as the leader of the 2,000-year-old bureaucracy, which includes more than 1 billion members. Pope Gregory XII did so in 1415 to help end a church schism. Within 15 to 20 days after Benedict’s Feb. 28 resignation, approximately 120 cardinals will be sequestered into a conclave within Vatican City to decide who the next infallible leader of the church will be. Black smoke from the Sistine Chapel’s chimney means no decision and white smoke with the chime of bells signals that cardinals have chosen a pope.
Earlier in the day, Benedict bid farewell to his faithful, presiding over his last mass as pontiff during an Ash Wednesday service from St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent for Roman Catholics and is also observed by other Christian faiths including Lu-
therans and Methodists. The most solemn season is marked with ashes on the forehead and ends on Easter. The time is considered a period to demonstrate repentance to God. St. Lucie West residents Bill and Sharon Snyder said what was the last Ash Wednesday under Benedict’s guidance was bittersweet. “I’m just disappointed and sad (that he has to resign),” Bill Snyder said. “But he showed great strength, wisdom and love in his decision.” The Rev. Son Hoang, a priest at St. Bernadette, said Benedict’s decision was a courageous one. I was sad when I heard the news … but to be honest I respect his decision deeply,” Rev. Hoang

Building boom in Tradition Developer to add 1,000 homes and mega clubhouse to community By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer
nrodriguez@yourvoiceweekly.com
TRADITION — Confidence is key to a good economy, so the experts say. And if they’re correct, the housing market in Tradition is on the verge of thriving once again as A.V. Homes begins construction of more than 1,000 homes over the next 18 to 36 months in Vitalia at Tradition. Developers said they are confident their addition to the active adult community will be a success. Vitalia already has approximately 180 occupied homes, built by the Arizona-based company, which also has a Central Florida division located in Kissimmee. At an event held last weekend, A.V. Homes debuted three new model homes in addition to their six existing home styles in the community. Homes are reasonably priced from $165,000 to $247,000. The builder already broke ground on a $7 million, 24,000-square-foot resort-style clubhouse, which should be completed in the time frame, Ken Plonski, senior vice president of communications said. The clubhouse will feature a fitness gym, ballrooms, tennis courts, a heated pool, rooms for social gatherings and a 3,500-squarefoot putting green. Plonski said the swarms who viewed the new model homes

lots of views off of the back of the homes,” Manning said of the spacious plans that often overlook the community’s expansive lake. “Some of the energy features also set us apart (from other developments). The homes are insulated and keep all the cool air in and all the hot air out. This will give you a little bit of relief on your energy bills.” Two of the hundreds who turned out to browse the new homes, which boasted the smell of new carpets and freshly painted walls, was St. Lucie West couple Steve and Ann Klidonas. Both lounged on an entry patio of the 3,005-square-foot Space
Coast model, a three-bedroom, three-bathroom home priced at $235,000. “I’m very impressed. You get so much standard,” Ann Kildonas said. “If my husband said we could move, I’d be packed tonight.” Vitalia resident and advisory board member Rick Dixon said the community is like one big extended family. “If you’re not having fun here, you’re not having fun,” said Dixon, who calls each resident on their birthdays. “This neighborhood is beyond fantastic.” For more information on Vitalia at Tradition, visit vitaliahomes.com

Allen said he’s been checking up on the 1-year-old since the child was two months old. “His mama and papa were drug addicts,” said Allen, who added the child is now in a happy and loving home with his aunt. “We were afraid he was going to contract a disease from his mother, but his blood came back negative. The Port St. Lucie resident said Black History Month is a time to reflect on the significant contribution every shade of the race has contributed to American culture. “It (Black History Month) shows that anything is possible if you try,” Allen said. “It’s great to show the positive things going on in the black community especially during times of high unemployment and violence in the north end of the county.” Allen said he currently advocates for four children. After enduring 30 hours of training, Allen, who has worked with children most of his life, started

Easter House drawing low on golden ticket sales By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer
nrodriguez@yourvoiceweekly.com
TREASURE COAST — Organizers of the YMCA’s 26th annual Easter House drawing faults the economic downturn and a Northeast natural disaster for dismal ticket sales for their yearly free home giveaway. Despite the shortfall, the YMCA of the Treasure Coast Easter house director is hopeful the event will garner dollars for a good cause. “Ticket sales are drastically down,” Robin Sutherland said. “We have to get the news out there that the Easter house is up and running.” “I think what’s causing it is the economy and the elections, which left people unsure of what was going to happen,” she said. Sutherland said Super Storm Sandy could be partially to blame. “I know it has (had an effect),” said Sutherland, who said parttime Florida residents from the northern states are usually big ticket buyers. “They’re not here this year. Some of them didn’t have any damage, but they had friends who did.” “They are rightfully giving to local causes for their community,” she said. Proceeds from the raffle benefit a scholarship program for YMCA activities on the Treasure Coast. Through the scholarship fund, low-income families are able to take advantage of YMCA-spon-
Spring
sored activities they couldn’t otherwise afford, Sutherland said. Activities include everything from summer camp to basketball lessons and reduced-rate childcare. This year, the grand prize house, built by D.R. Horton, is located just beyond the gates of Murano in Palm City. The floor plan, known as the “Mangrove,” is a 1,766-squarefoot dwelling that includes three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a twocar garage and a shaded patio. The home is valued at $229,990 and tickets for the drawing are $10. The winner could take the house or $125,000 in cash, Sutherland said. Second prize is an eight-day cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line valued at $9,500. Sutherland said this time last year, the organization sold 31,038 tickets, equaling $310,380. This year, the nonprofit has sold a total of $24,102 worth of tickets so far. Last year, the nonprofit sold a grand total of 62,892 tickets, raising $628,920 for its cause, Sutherland said. Tickets went on sale Oct. 15 and will continue right up to the drawing at Murano on March 28 at 5:30 p.m., Sutherland said. To purchase tickets for $10 each or to take a virtual tour of the house, visit ymcaeasterhouse. org or call 1-877-WIN-YMCA (9469622). The model home is open for tours each day from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through March 28. Murano is located at 2689 S.W. Gallery Circle in Palm City.

can trigger thousands of dollars in damage to a home if pinhole leaks aren’t detected early, Pickle said. In 2006, Pickle said the district, which services approximately 20,000 homes and businesses, discovered elevated levels of copper and lead, but have since corrected the issue. Pickle said a number of elements including manufacture defects, old age and soil could be contributing factors to the problem. This year’s report concluded the district’s water met Environmental Protection Agency standards. The testing, conducted by Baskerville-Donovan Inc., which has offices in Pensacola, Tampa and Melbourne, evaluated daily water logs, lab testing results and drinking water reports, the report states. “Based on information collected and evaluated, the finished water being produced by the SFWMD is not considered corrosive and meets industry standards for stabilized drinking water,” the report states. According to the report, copper corrosion, also known as copper pitting “is a process that can take several months or years before the pit propagates through a wall pipe.” Tom Slutsky, Port St. Lucie plumber and owner of Channel Plumbing of Florida, said acid in the soil may be to blame. “I believe it has a lot to do with the soil,” said Slutsky, who said he’s responded to complaints in just
about every community in St. Lucie West. “The acidity of the soil is so high and copper is an alloy, so it corrodes.” Slutsky said another reason for the corrosion could be improper installation. “Maybe when they poured the concrete, the copper wasn’t protected,” Slutsky said. Lake Forest resident Jim Russello said he’s had two leaks in the same pipe. Russello said a flexible pipe seems to be the answer to his problem, which he said is widespread in his community. “Forty-six homes out of 689 have had leaks in Lake Forest,” Russello said. “The holes are usually located in the copper pipes near the water heater.” Kings Isle resident and former California EPA engineer Frank Gaunce said he believes he’s found the answer to the leaks. Gaunce said he hasn’t experienced any pipe problems. “The water isn’t causing the pipe leaks,” Gaunce said. “The remedy to this problem is to use iron.” Gaunce said the installation of an iron rod, which can be purchased at Home Depot may solve the problem. The metal rod should be driven into the ground so that it makes contact with the copper pipe. The iron will in turn be the corrosive element instead of the copper. Gaunce cautions that his method should only be conducted by a professional to avoid a pipe burst or electrocution from underground power lines.

Keaton, who’s been planning the event since last August, said she loves to just sit down and soak in the sights and sounds. “My favorite part is watching people see friends they haven’t seen in a year,” said Keaton, who said a favorite spot to park is in the kids’ zone. “It’s so nice to see people smile and have fun.”
said. “As humans, we try to hold onto so much power.” Rev. Michael Ulto said the church will always adore Benedict for his contributions to the church. “Through his gentleness he reminded us of the gentleness of Jesus,” Ulto said. “We’re praying for Pope Benedict every day.” Tradition residents Jim and Sandra McAleer said Benedict’s tough decision must have taken an insurmountable amount of strength. “Only he and God know his soul, physical and mental abilities,” Sandra McAleer said. “I think it’s very courageous.”
In a prepared statement, the Catholic Diocese of Palm Beach, which governs over parishes in Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties, stood behind the pontiff. The Diocese oversees 267,882 Catholics and 53 parishes and missions, according to its website. “While the announcement of the Pope’s resignation was a surprise, it is much in keeping with his primary desire to serve the Church of which he has always seen himself as an instrument,” Palm Beach Diocese Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito said in a written statement. “We wish we could have had him as a shepherd longer, but guided by the Holy Spirit, he knows what is best.”

Keaton hopes Pickler’s larger-than-life voice and personality will dazzle spectators. “She’s a wonderful young lady and we’re very proud to have her,” Keaton said. “I like her music and what she did on Idol.” Keaton said fair attendance all depends on the weather. More than 119,000 people passed through the gates during the fair’s 10-day run last year, Keaton said. New attractions include the “Wacky Wheeler,” an acrobatic act that roams the grounds, an interactive and informative “Recycle Cycle,” for children and Kari and Billy, a country duo from Nashville, Tenn. Regular fair staples will also be back, Keaton said. They include the racing pigs, petting zoo, a hypnotist, livestock

agreement with Tradition Florida to once again use the namesake, the park’s name from 2004-2009. The ballpark, originally known as Thomas J. White Stadium, was built in 1986. “Having a name to the stadium shows our economy is coming back and people are willing to invest,” District 1 Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky said. The naming rights will generate revenues for both the New York Mets and St. Lucie County, organization representatives said. The county, which pays for the debt service and operations of the facility, will receive $75,000 in the first year of the agreement, which runs through 2017. Digital Domain Media Group secured the naming rights for the 7,800-seat stadium in 2010, but ended its $100,000-a-year contract with the Mets during its bankruptcy filing in late September. “The Mets are a huge economic drive in our county and region across the board,” said Dzadovsky, who said economic reports indicate the Mets net roughly $20 million annually for area tourism. “Local businesses, hotels and restaurants all feel the benefits of having The Mets in St. Lucie County.”
Team executives were equally as pleased with the partnership, which coincides with the team’s 25th anniversary in St. Lucie West. “We are pleased to resume our partnership with Tradition Florida,” Mets COO Jeff Wilpon said in a press release. “The iconic name is familiar to Treasure Coast residents and Mets fans.” Tradition Florida’s general manager Jim Anderson said the partnership fits like a glove. “It’s a natural fit,” Anderson said. “We’re glad to re-establish Tradition and the Mets, two of the most recognized brands in the region, to promote St. Lucie baseball on the Treasure Coast.” Along with its new name, Tradition Field also received a facelift. The stadium upgraded and enhanced its scoreboard and video screen. The metal bleacher seating area along the first base line was converted into regular seats with open picnic tables and outdoor bars, Mets officials said in a press release. A new 500-foot fan shop will be located on the first floor concourse, in addition to a renovated smaller fan shop already on the ground floor.

Most players try to hit the punch with a very hard swing which will cause the ball to go higher. You should take one club more and swing slower putting less spin on the ball. A couple of keys hitting low shots – 1. Position the ball towards the back foot. 2. Keep club going back low to the ground and finish with the club low to the ground.

FORT PIERCE — Tenor Luciano Pavarotti was a towering figure in the world of opera, but he was much more than that. He transcended the world of opera, becoming a superstar and bringing opera to a vast audience around the world. Pavarotti was famed for his voice and his showmanship. His recordings as part of the origi-
nal Three Tenors, with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, set records for sales of classical albums. He worked with artists such as Sting, Bono and Elton John on recordings to raise money for areas ravaged by war and famine. His 2007 death from pancreatic cancer was a tremendous loss to the music world. Teatro Lirico D’Europa, which brings opera to audiences in the United States and abroad, is

paying tribute to Pavarotti with a concert on March 10 at the Sunrise Theatre. Giorgio Lalov, a former Bulgarian opera singer and the company’s artistic director, spoke about the maestro and his legacy. “Pavarotti was a real star,” he said. “Even people who don’t care about opera know who he is. I have tried to celebrate the biggest tenor ever with all of the art he sang. One of the arias, “Nessun dorma,” from Puccini’s “Turandot,” will be performed by three tenors. “This was Pavarotti’s signature,” Lalov said. “No one can sing it like he did. We will have three tenors sing it.” The tenors are Simon Kyung Lee, Fabian Robles and Jorge Antonio Pita. The performance will feature an orchestra and soloists. In addition to “Nessun dorma,” there will also be arias and duets from “Rigoletto,” “La Boheme,” “Lucia di Lammermoor,” “Il Trovatore” and “La Traviata.” There will also be songs, or canzones, that Pavarotti sang, including “O Sole Mio.” Lalov said that this production has been very popular with audiences. “I did this concert in the United States several times,” he said. “People love it with all the arias

David M. Lutken returns to Riverside Theatre in ‘Woody Sez, The Life & Music of Woody Guthrie’ For Your Voice News & Views VERO BEACH — The 20122013 Waxlax Second Stage season continues with the musical, “Woody Sez, The Life and Music of Woody Guthrie.” Devised by David M. Lutkin with Nick Corley, “Woody Sez” takes the Waxlax Stage from March 7 - 24 and is sponsored by Riverside Theatre’s Patron Producers. Part music, part words, Woody Sez celebrates the spirit of folk legend Woody Guthrie, “America’s greatest ballad maker.” Woody’s music defined an American era of social consciousness and political expression with songs like “This Land is Your Land,” “The Train is Bound for Glory,” “Sinking of the Reuben James,” and “The Ballad of Tom Joad.” This musical portrait, featuring Woody’s stirring ballads and joyous anthems, celebrates the colorful life and rich
musical legacy of a tunesmith whose music continues to inspire today’s finest storytelling songwriters like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Billy Bragg. Broadway performer and recording artist David M. Lutken, who plays the title role, is joined on stage by actor/musicians David Finch, Helen Jean Russell and Darcie Deaville to bring Guthrie’s music to life. Filled with beautiful folk harmonies, the cast plays a varied collection of instruments — twin fiddles, guitars, bass, harmonica, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, pennywhistle, and dobro. Woody Guthrie is one of America’s most influential and important folksong writers. Many folks don’t know his name or his story, but recognize his songs. A man very much of his time and place,

York City Opera, the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, and at many international venues. David began his professional connection with Woody Guthrie and Woody Guthrie Publications in 1988, which led to his creating folk music and American history lessons for school children and young adults. His Broadway credits include “Inherit the Wind,” starring Christopher Plummer, “Ring of Fire: The Johnny Cash Musical,” “The Civil War” and “The Will Rogers Follies.” David has performed at Riverside in “Midnight Clear” and in various actor cabarets with his Seat of the Pants Band. After every Sunday matinee performance, the cast of “Woody Sez” invites area musicians to participate in a “Hootenanny” in the theatre’s lobby. Free to the general public, a “Hootenanny” is an impromptu gathering at which folksingers entertain often with an audience joining in. Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments and become part of the fun. Riverside Theatre’s production is directed by Nick Corley with Sherry Lutkin (associate director), David M. Lutkin (music director), Luke Hegel-Cantarella (scenic design), Rob Siler (lighting design), Jeffrey Meek (costume design), Robert Miller Jr. (stage manager)
Woody’s books, essays, articles, poems lyrics and over a thousand songs contain incredible insights both topical and timeless, introspective and universal. Named in honor of then-Democratic presidential nominee, Woodrow Wilson, he was born and raised in Oklahoma as the son of a land speculator/politician/merchant and the beautiful, but troubled, daughter of a pioneer school marm, both of Scottish-Irish descent. Woody’s songs and message stand on their own. Molded in the manner of Mark Twain and fellow Oklahoman Will Rogers, Woody’s humor and determined hopefulness belie his personal history — his tragic and defiant life, and gives astonishing depth and dimension to his achievements. David M. Lutken has been a performer in music and theatre for 30 years. As a player of traditional American instruments, folk music comprises a very large part of his repertoire. Born and raised in Dallas, David received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classical Studies from Duke University. He studied in London at the Royal School of Church Music, the Royal College of Music, and has a graduate degree in acting from the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Arts. He has appeared at Carnegie Hall, with the New

nO anxiEty • nO pain • nO StrESS
Imagine actually looking forward to a dental appointment. Imagine coming out of your dental visit relaxed and refreshed. Dr. Michael Sohl and his expert team have brought dentistry innovation and your comfort to a whole new level, providing gentle sleep for all implant, cosmetic, and general dentistry. From the simplest to the most sophisticated dental procedures. Performed with expertise, delivered with a deep commitment to personal attention and caring.
Are Dental Implants Right for You?
Now, you have more options. Implant-retained dentures are permanent, and they look, feel, and function like natural teeth. You can smile and eat without fear of slippage. You can go to sleep at night and wake up in the morning with your teeth in place.

Dr. Sohl is on the forefront of implant placement. He has a dental CAT scan unit on premises for computer guided implant placement protocols for Nobel Biocares All-on Four/Teeth in a DayTM procedures. All-on-Four/Teeth in a DayTM was developed to minimize the number of implants required to anchor a complete set of dentures. A full arch can be replaced with four implants in a single visit, as opposed to as many as eight implants and multiple office visits.
