TRADITION — The 2015 NL Champion New York Mets took the field in Tradition Friday to begin the 2016 Grapefruit League season, and are gearing up for what many of them are saying is going to be a well-expected year for the New York blue, orange and white boys of summer. A new face in camp this year is former Pittsburgh Pirate and current second baseman, Neil Walker. Walker, who was traded to the Mets in December of 2015, signed a one-year deal in January. He told reporters this week he’s really excited to get in the clubhouse, meet the staff and meet the players. “To get in here and settle in is really kind of exciting,” Walker said. “The top thing on my list of why I’m excited to be a Met is to not have to face this pitching staff, even though it only would have been a couple times during the year. We know what we’re capable of and I’m really happy to

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Hold on to your meatballs — Little Italy has a new address, and her second home is here in St. Lucie. According to the National Italian American Foundation, more than 1 million Italian Americans live in Florida. In fact, Florida ranks 4th in the nation for persons who identify themselves as Italian-Americans — and 13.58 percent of them live right here in St. Lucie County and St. Lucie West. That wasn’t always the case. “Why are you living in New York?” said Jack DiGiorgio to his radio audience in New York. DiGiorgio took up residence along with his family in St. Lucie County and St. Lucie West. He is president of the annual Festival Italiano and vice president of the Italian American Club of the Treasure Coast. In 1986, DiGiorgio had just bought property in Port St. Lucie when he saw opportunity. He relocated permanently in 1989. From 1989 to 1993, while airing an Italian radio program from WPSL to New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, he told Italian listeners about Port St. Lucie. Interest grew. “I came here because I heard that the Mets were coming

ST LUCIE WEST — St. Lucie West Centennial High School teacher was arrested on Monday afternoon after a student reported that a fellow student was involved in a sexual relationship with her band teacher. Gary A. Burnette, 26, of 442 SW Kentwood Road in Port St. Lucie, was charged with sexual assault by a custodian, sexual battery of a victim 12 years of age/under 18 years old and lewd and lascivious behavior with a victim 12 years of age/under 18 years old. According to the Police Department arrest report, the crime was reported by a fellow student of the victim to the school resource officer, Victor Garcia. Garcia in turn notified Port St. Lucie Detective Stephen Reuther, who interviewed the reporting student further. After that questioning and viewing of screen-saved messages from the reporting student’s phone, of the victims KiK account, which were sent to the student by the victim, Reuther requested the victim be brought in to be interviewed. During the interview, the victim said she and Burnette had been friends since Christmas three or four years ago. She said she looked up to the teacher and could visit and talk to him because she did not have many friends. She admitted she often accepted car rides from her teacher, and sex did occur between the two during one of these rides, after the recent Four County Honors Band Show, the report said. Police said they asked the victim to participate in a “controlled” phone call to Burnette so they could listen to the conversation and the victim agreed. During the call, Burnette allegedly acknowledged he understood she was being questioned by police and asked the victim what kind of questions she was being asked so their stories would match. Burnette also asked the victim to delete her Kik account and he would the same, police said.
Gary A. Burnette Detective Reuther called Burnette after the controlled phone call and asked him if he could interview him, to which Burnette agreed. Burnette showed up at the Port St. Lucie Police Department after school on his own accord and was taken to an interview room by Reuther, the report said. After Burnette was read his Miranda rights he initially denied any sexual contact with the victim and stated she was only a family friend. However, he said he was aware of rumors going around the school that he was involved in a sexual relationship with a student and he reached out to the school principal and said the rumors were a fabrication, police said. He also said he spoke to the victim earlier in the afternoon to see if she wanted him to speak to her mother in order to assure her the accusations were false, the report said. Reuther then informed Burnette he had been listening to the earlier call between the victim and him and was aware of what Burnette had said. Reuther then asked Burnette if this were the only student he had sex with. Burnette then admitted he had intercourse, in his truck, with the victim, the night of the Four County Honors Band Show on or about Jan 21-23, according to police. Burnette said he was aware at the time the victim was a minor, and she was taking birth control. He learned later she was

Mets return to make an impact on us
P
ort St. Lucie, are you ready for some peanuts and Cracker Jack? Spring Training is here! Last year, we had record breaking crowds, and Major League Baseball pegged our average attendance at 6,089 per game. After winning the National League Championship and making it to the World Series for the first time in fifteen years, we should expect our New York Mets to attract even more fans this season. Technically speaking, it might be “bananas.” While hosting so many guests can make it more difficult to get around town and increase the wait time at our favorite restaurants, please join me in rolling out the red carpet for our visitors and remembering the many positives associated with this annual Rite of Spring, including direct economic impact, marketing of our community, family entertainment and hometown pride. With an eye on the bottom line,
back in 2013, St. Lucie County engaged the University of Michigan’s Sports Management Program to study the Mayor Greg Oravec economic impact of Spring Training on St. Lucie County — the findings $35.6 million per year. That’s nothing to sneeze at and has probably only grown over the last few years due to increased attendance, our team’s success and a little inflation. Plus, our return on investment is made even higher by the fact that the County and City governments did not buy the land and build the original stadium for Major League Baseball in the 1980s. to thank for that (and the I-95 Interchange). What I haven’t seen anyone put a price tag on yet, but am willing to bet is a “big” number, is the value of the marketing and advertising we receive from being the springtime home of the Mets. No, we can’t always control the message that is communicated about us because we can’t control what a player or reporter might say. However, I think the occasional lump has been worth taking because in speaking with our residents, especially those in St. Lucie West, PGA and Tradition — I have personally met hundreds who discovered PSL as a result of following the Mets. Even if we only considered hundreds of
residents, once we account for the economic footprint of each of these residents, who wouldn’t live and invest here but for the Mets, we can see how the total value starts adding up fast. Additionally, however “big” that number is, I think our local governments and community stakeholders can work together to make it even “bigger”.

OUR MISSION We are here to provide our readers with completely unbiased news coverage. Fun and entertaining features about the communities in which they live. For our advertising partners we pledge to provide the most complete consultative and marketing programs possible for the best return on their investments.
Our city is armed with a fleet of specialty service vehicles to keep Port St. Lucie not just beautiful, but functional. Donna Rhoden pulled from her 29 and a half Mitch Kloorfain years of experience with the city to explain the history and the functionality of today’s operating system of our water and wastewater. It’s the history of our infrastructure that guides us into the next era of serving a growing population. For those who have lived here for 24 years or more would remember first-hand what Ms. Rhoden was about to tell us. In the summer of ’92, we experienced record-breaking water demands and 10,000 residents had their water cut off. The utility at the time, General Development Utilities, GDU, had gone bankrupt in 1990 leaving the county to acquire the services until 1994. The city took over in 1994 and has grown the utility to match the population growths over time and secured their vision of not having water be an issue with

the acquisition of the McCarty Ranch preserve. Water storage is the preserve’s main purpose in having a source of drinking water through the storage and treatment plan. The numbers are massive to me. Forty-eight wells and 1,200 miles of water mains and two storage treatment plants with almost equal amounts for the wastewater treatment process run through the city beneath every house, apartment and business. Now, grab that water that came out of your faucet so easily just by moving a lever over your sink. Take a sip. That’s a lot of work and modern ingenuity for something we don’t miss until it’s gone. James Angstadt, public works director chimed in next to go through the city’s Public Works department to show us just what it takes to keep the residents moving through the city. We can find our way while driving on our 911 miles of paved roadways and 34 bridges, all

ST. LUCIE — As of Feb. 16, the city’s contract with City Attorney Pam Booker was terminated by a 4-0 city council vote. Port St. Lucie Mayor Gregory Oravec had called a special council meeting to address concerns about the city’s alignment with their strategic plan. When Booker’s office questioned the mayor’s authority to call the meeting or hold it without her presence, rights clearly invested by the city’s charter, the agenda for the meeting was refocused on Booker’s performance as acting attorney. It was noted as an aside that she had missed seven city council meetings since her appointment in June 2014. “(Her challenge to the meeting) reflects a complete lack of judgment and willingness to generate legal opinions — for self-serving, political, or other purposes, and it’s left me with no confidence in the City Attorney’s abilities to perform her duties under the charter,” said Oravec at the meeting. Oravec expressed his concern that repeated miscommunication among city officials, lack of accountability, and poorly advised legal strategy over the last year all point to a pattern of questionable performance on the part of Booker. Specific examples alluded to were the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute (VGTI) debacle, confusion regarding an alleged City Center negotiation, and lack of communication on the Crosstown Parkway Superstreet design,
Pam Booker among others. While explicit details regarding Booker’s failure to uphold her duties have not been fleshed out by the council, it is clear that issues of weak communication did not just appear overnight. Earlier this month, after news surfaced that in several cases the city took an inordinate amount of time to answer public records requests, City Manager Jeff Bremer released a memorandum that called for better transparency and more effective communication, both within the council and externally. At the special meeting, Bremer took responsibility for his part in the lack of communication and poor execution that has led to many of the city’s recent crises, and apologized to the council if he was to blame for any actions he may have taken that have led to the council’s embarrassment. “I feel I’ve done a good job over the last three years,” said Bremer, “but I also recognize the need to be flexible and change

FESTIVAL from page A3 here.” Little did he know he was laying the groundwork for a whole new Italian immigration experience. “I told everyone they had to move here. And, they came.” But leaving a strong Italian dominated culture to live in Port St. Lucie presented a unique problem— isolation. “There were no other Italians here,” he said. “I had to do something.” Originally from Italy, DiGiorgio immigrated with his parents to the United States when he was 16 years old and lived in New York. Like many other immigrants who first traveled to New York from Italy, the struggle began with language. “In Brooklyn, I could speak Italian anywhere. There were Italian American Clubs and Italians everywhere.” Today, DiGiorgio along with his two sons and their families reside in a St. Lucie West home — a home that doesn’t come without challenges. “Here, you have to speak English,” he said. “At first that was difficult.” Also, instilling a love of culture in the next generation was a concern. DiGiorgio wanted to embrace the Italian American experience. “My sons were born in New York. So, of course, they loved the Giants. But now, they are like me

and love the Mets. We have the Italian flag and our American flag together.” In 1991, DiGiorgio dreamed of people coming together to celebrate Italian culture and sharing his love of culture in Port St. Lucie in a festival setting. In 2010, he launched Festival Italiano. The first few years, the festival lost money. “I kept believing people would see my heart and not a person trying to fill a pocketbook.” Now, in its 7th year, nearly 4,000 people of all nationalities get together to celebrate. The festival is free, but the cost to make it free isn’t cheap. In fact, the budget for the entire event, which is planned year-round by GDG Productions, runs around $15,000 and is financed by community sponsorships. “I couldn’t do this without them,” says DiGiorgio. This year, DiGiorgio brings a new slice of Italy to the community — a decade-long tradition called “The Giglio Feast.” “It’s big,” DiGiorgio said. Big is right. The Giglio, which means “lily” in Italian, is an 80-foot-tall, 3-ton statue that is carried and danced throughout the city. Also known as the Dance of the Giglio, the event honors St. Antonio of Padua, the patron saint of finding lost things or lost people. “I feel

TRADITION — “Play ball” are the words getting ready to be shouted by umpires in just less than three weeks at Tradition Field. But some people are shouting foul ball right now. Local media reported earlier this month the stadium is not ready and unsafe for fans and players, with nearly $3 million in repairs needed before the season begins. St. Lucie County Public Information Manager Erick Gill said that’s just not accurate. “There’s no way the county, the New York Mets, or Major League Baseball would open up the stadium to 8,000 fans if we felt there was a safety risk at all,” Gill said. Tommy John surgery (TJS), known in medical practice as ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction. The procedure is common among collegiate and professional athletes in several sports, most notably baseball. Relievers Antonio Bastardo Addison Reed and Jerry Blevins were also acquired. In 2015 Cabrera finished with a batting average of .265 in 505 at-bats and 551 plate appearances. The switch-hitter piled up 134 hits, 36 walks, 58 RBIs, 15 dingers and 66 runs scored. Fans will remember Michael Conforto, who hit two home runs in Game 4 of the World Series last year. Conforto said earlier this week it was a blessing to be on this team.

I’m working on my outfield stuff, I’m working on getting good reads, the shortest and quickest path to the ball, and when I’m at the plate I’m working on things there. “I think if you’re not trying to improve all the time you’re going to fall behind. METS from page A12 his usual left field position — a position he hasn’t played since he was a freshman at Oregon State. Coming back for his second season with the Amazin’s after posting a monster 1.263 OPS (on base plus slugging) percentage last season during Sept.7 -13, is Yoenis Cespedes. The former NL Player of the Week is rumored to have passed on bigger contracts to play with his NL Championship team. Cespedes signed a 3-year, $75-million contract with an opt-out after the first season. The four-year veteran boasts a .271 career batting average, with 609 hits, 106 home runs and 367 RBIs. Team Manager Terry Collins held his first press conference on Thursday Feb. 17 said he has some expectations for this year. “I tell our players all the time, we create our own expectations,” Collins said. “Last year we sat down some expectations: It’s time to win. We won. Now, those expectations have been changed. We’ve still got to win, but it’s unfair to say it’s World Series or bust, because that’s not true. There’s too many things that happen during the course of a year that can change that. “What we’re going to do right now is walk out this year know-
ing we’ve got a quality pitching staff, a quality bullpen, a very, very good lineup and we’ve shown we can compete.” New York Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson said at the beginning of last week he is not only feeling positive about his treatments for cancer, but he feels like he and his team are ready to go. “I really haven’t been this upbeat about a team in a long time and I think that’s exciting,” Alderson said during an early week press conference. “It’s exciting for us, exciting for the players and I think for the fans as well.” The Mets will practice every day, and fans can come watch for free. That includes spring training game days, although the open workout period for fans ends at 11:30 a.m. on those days. Gates at Tradition Field open at 9:30 a.m. Fans can park in the main lot and must enter the complex behind Field 2, which is located near Gate 1. Tickets to spring training games can be purchased at the Tradition Field box office from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Food and drinks will also be sold during open workouts. For more information, visit the team websites Stluciemets.com and mets.com or call Tradition Field at (772) 8712115.

listed in the report, only three were listed as high priority items, identified as “safety” issues. “There were initially 300 plastic seats that had cracked due to exposure to weather,” Gill said. “But since the articles ran we went in and examined even closer and realized that 1,500 seats could use attention to keep the seats from potentially pinching the legs of fans when they sit down.” In addition to the seats, Gill said there is a railing that needs grout work, and that’s being taken care of before the season begins. Lastly, the green Berber carpet that lines the batting tunnels/ cages needs to be replaced, and Gill said that doesn’t have anything to do with the fans — that’s a players and coaches area only, and it’s not a safety issue, but purely cosmetic. That issue is being resolved this week. When asked if he felt the recent reports about the condition and subsequent repairs to the field were exaggerated Gill said, “Absolutely.” “There are even comments from the fans [in the comment section of the online reports] from people who’ve said, ‘I’ve been there a number of times and it’s a wonderful stadium and in great shape,’” Gill said.

Gill further explained that a portion of the $2.8 million in repairs, as described in addition to the batting tunnels/cages, includes repair and renovation to the club house air conditioning system and washers and dryers, which is in no way a safety risk to the public or players. In a county press release dated Feb. 3, the St. Lucie County Parks, Recreation and Facilities staff wrote that the facility is safe and operational for both fans and players. “While there are always improvements that can be made to a nearly 30-year-old facility, fans and players can rest assured that Tradition Field is ready to provide the same great Major League Baseball experience that they’ve come to appreciate and expect over the years,” said St. Lucie County Administrator Howard Tipton. In recent years, St. Lucie County spent $1.5 million on improvement projects and repairs at Tradition Field. The county spends approximately $2 million per year to maintain the fields and structures to Major League Baseball standards. Additionally, the conditions of the facility have been recognized with a Florida State League Commendation Certificate for the past 12 years, according

TRADITION — Texas may have Chip and Joanna Gaines of the hit show “Fixer Upper,” while California has Tarek and Christina El Mouss from “Flip or Flop” — now Florida has Bill and Bridget Redeker, co-owners and co-designers of b&B Designs. With the help of the talented real estate experts and market leaders Kay Rodriguez and June D’Angelo from Lang Realty, the Redekers are excited and pleased to have their most recent and dramatic renovation house revealed. The house, located at 7433 Laurels Place in Port St. Lucie, is completed and now listed for sale. Bridget and Bill, better known to their clients as the Bs from b&B Designs, are thrilled with the final results. Even though the community is relatively new,
there is a portion of the homes that are ready for their first major transformation. “We were blessed to find this Laurels ‘Sunset’ home, and if you love those dramatic before-versus-after moments from your favorite HGTV shows, you must absolutely come see and experience this home for yourself,” Bridget said. This four-bedroom, four-bathroom, 3600-square-foot home is exquisitely designed, totally move-in ready and has undergone a massive transformation from how they originally found, and then re-imagined, the home. Kay and June invite you to come experience the b&B difference and to show you this dream home within The Reserve-PGA Village. Lang Realty will be holding an Open House Sunday, Feb. 28 from noon to 4 p.m. at 7433 Laurels Place to highlight this gem.

With today’s directed advertising and online marketing, we are only scratching the surface of what we can do to brand our City and Treasure Coast through our association with the Mets and Major League Baseball, even more so when our team is in the hunt for a World Championship. After all, marketing our brand can be fairly simple and straightforward, especially in cold weather Major League cities. While the north freezes we put on our sunscreen and enjoy some of our best weather of the year. We’re safe (Port St. Lucie is the safest large city in Florida), clean and green. We live our Florida lifestyle without having to pay a state income tax. “Treasure” is even in our
region’s name for goodness sakes! Of course, even this amount of upside can be hard to keep in mind when it takes us 20 minutes to go a few miles from church to our favorite breakfast café. And, I don’t want to say, “if you can’t beat them, join them,” but…I do hope you join in the fun, that you take someone you care about to a Mets game this Spring (or to a St. Lucie Mets game later this Summer) because we are one of only 24 Major League Baseball Spring Training Ballparks in the world. That is something to experience and to be proud of, and it is one of the many things that make Port St. Lucie special. Enjoy Spring and Spring Training, PSL. GO M-E-T-S! Ride with pride: March is Bicycle Month in PSL
“Because patient care should always come first”
W
hether you’re a daily rider, or haven’t been on a bike for months or years, get your spin ready. By proclamation March is Bicycle Month in Port St. Lucie. To celebrate, Mayor Greg Oravec will mount a road bike to join the Port St. Lucie Community Ride on Saturday, March 5. The ride will take off from City Hall, 121 S.W. Port St. Lucie Blvd., at 8 a.m. The Port St. Lucie Police Department and local cycling advocates are working out route and safety details at press time. What’s certain is — barring for more unseasonal rain — everybody will have fun. Bicycle Month in Port St. Lucie coincides with Gov. Rick Scott’s annual proclamation of Bicycle Month in Florida. Tonight I’ll receive the local proclamation at a City Council regular meeting as a member of the county’s Bicycle/ Pedestrian Advisory Committee — St. Lucie County Transportation Planning Organization. It’s an honor for which I’m hardly deserving. When people receive procla-
Ira S. Pearlstine, MD
mations at council meetings, they’re supposed to say a few words about why those proclamations are important. Here’s what Patrick McCallister I plan to tell the council. Today in Port St. Lucie, an elementary schoolchild got his or her first brand new bicycle. That child is going to bed tonight excited about riding it to school tomorrow morning. A college student rode her trusty bike to class this morning, then to her job this afternoon. She’ll do those rides until she graduates. A middle-aged couple rode their bikes about five miles this evening, a daily ritual they started after the doctor said one was pre-diabetic. A combat veteran rode 20, 40, 60 miles aiming, one day, for the Ironman Florida. That’s one more victory over PTSD. When you see him, wave, but please don’t honk.

And today a 48-year old autistic man rode his bicycle to the Port St. Lucie City Hall to receive a proclamation declaring March Bicycle Month in Port St. Lucie. You see, his sensory threshold has dropped in the last decade and now he all but can’t safely drive anymore, so he works, shops, exercises and plays on bicycles almost 100 miles a week, most of those in Port St. Lucie. I’m sure you guessed, that’s me. I’m a proud member of this county’s Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and it’s a privilege to for me to receive this proclamation that really belongs to the thousands of our city’s part- and fulltime bicyclists. Bicyclists are increasingly important end users of all your transportation projects. Demographers, I’ve read, say that millennials — those born around 1990 forward — are increasingly less eager about getting cars and driving than previous generations. It’s the smartphone generation that gets around just fine with walking, busses and bicycles. They have Uber when they need it. There’s a good chance this significant minority trend will continue and grow through this century, and increasingly Port St. Lucie will have to transition from being an automobile to a multi-modal city. The transportation choices you, our city leaders, make today will decide how easily Port St. Lucie makes that increasingly inevitable transition. Yes, there’s a wide swath of bicyclists out there, from children I’ve helped parents pick bicycles — and helmets — for to a sweet woman I met at Publix on St. Lucie West Boulevard. I’m envious of her trike and will have one just like it. If I recall right, she lives in King’s Isle and rides that trike a few times a week to get some exercise and a few groceries. Sitting at my home in Lake Forest, I see a plethora of neighbors riding trikes, cruisers and occasionally road bikes on Talquin Lane. Chances are good, the same thing is happening in your community, too. Go join them and celebrate Bicycle Month in Port St. Lucie with the City Council, Mayor Oravec and me.

the way that I operate the city, so that I can provide the information that you need. Please accept my apology to the staff and city council for my own shortcomings, and my commitment to improve over the next period of time.” During the regular council meeting on Feb. 22, it was confessed that neither Booker nor Bremer had been evaluated based on performance since their appointment. Councilman Ron Bowen and Vice Mayor Linda Bartz expressed concern that this was a failure of the council, but both Councilwoman Berger and Mayor Oravec said that they’d had numerous unofficial conversations with Booker where their expectations of her performance were made known. Booker will be the third city attorney to depart in the last half-year. Azlina Goldstein Siegal, the assistant attorney who was recently helping broker the Crosstown Parkway Extension contract, effectively left her post on Feb. 23. Goldstein Siegal will continue to serve on a month-to-month basis as interim acting attorney in conjunction with her new position at Nason, Yeager, Gerson, White, and Lioce. colleague, John Fumero, to act in her stead. Now that Booker, who had been with the city for 19 years, has left office, the most senior attorney on payroll with the city is Stefanie Beskovoyne, who has been assistant attorney for 4 years. The only other assistant attorney, Chris De Lorenzo, was instated less than a month ago. After Councilwoman Martin expressed great concerns over the transition period, specifically in regards to top priority items that need immediate attention, Councilwoman Berger proposed to implement a transition team that would be comprised of two staff attorneys and an outside facilitator, and will be overseen by Bremer. This team will be accountable for pressing projects, she says, and would ideally achieve demonstrable effects within 60 days. Oravec also mentioned that now may be a good opportunity to conduct an operational review of the city staff, but deferred that prospect as a later recourse. A search is under way to find a permanent replacement for Booker. Bremer has begun discussions with Colin Baenzinger and Associates to seek a qualified candidate, a process that is expected to reach conclusion within three months.

behind the scenes. The Night of the Stars gala presented by SLPS and the St. Lucie County Education Foundation honors outstanding achievers in four categories: Teacher of the Year, School Related Employee of the Year, Distinguished Minority educator of the Year and Outstanding First Year Teacher of the Year. “Each category provides a unique opportunity to recognize and honor excellence and commitment in the field of education,” said Kerry Padrick, Chief Communications Officer for SLPS. She went on to say, “A committee selects representatives for each category based upon their individual merits and positive impact upon their students.” Superintendent E. Wayne Gent not only thanked the sponsors, but extended a sincere thank-you to all SLPS staff and teachers. Though many nominees were recognized at the event, all deserving, four winners were selected at the gala. “They represent what the District stands for in quality education for each child every day,” said Gent. “It is through the relentless efforts of our instructional and support team members that we are making a difference in the

Chapel of the Four Chaplains in Philadelphia and Vice President of the Jewish Federation of the Treasure Coast. Wapnick personally knew survivors and families of the lost, and who will share his personal recollections of those who were among the last to see the chaplains alive. In addition, we will honor the memory of an unsung hero, Charles W. David, Jr., an Afro-American crewman of the rescue ship Comanche who is credited with saving more than 25 survivors from the icy waters, only to contract pneumonia and die himself seven weeks later (a Coast guard cutter was named in his honor in the Florida Keys in 2014). The event is being sponsored by the Port Saint Lucie Interfaith Clergy Association, the Jewish Federation of the Treasure Coast, Living Faith Church, Congregation Eitz Chayim (and others). There will be a special commemoration and service for the four chaplains, all first lieutenants. They included a Methodist minister, Rev. George L. Fox; a Rabbi, Alexander D. Goode, of the Reform movement; a Roman Catholic priest, Rev. John P. Washington; and Reformed Church in America minister, Rev. Clark V. Poling.

The Four Chaplains, also referred to as the “Immortal Chaplains” or the “Dorchester Chaplains,” were four United States Army chaplains who gave their lives to save other civilian and military personnel as the troop ship U.S. Army Transport (USAT) Dorchester sank during World War II. They helped other soldiers board lifeboats and gave up their own life jackets when the supply ran out. The chaplains joined arms, said prayers, and sang hymns as they went down with the ship. This event was the catalyst for Americans to embrace interfaith understanding. Until the Dorchester, there was no mention in print of Catholics, Protestants and Jews working together in this manner, especially in prayer. Each chaplain individually and independently made the decision to help a fellow soldier, not asking about his religion or beliefs, leaving the world with the message of “Interfaith in Action,” the line included on the stamp commemorating the chaplains. It was a transformational moment for America, the first time all three denominations were recognized by the mainstream population as serving together and with common purpose. You can learn more about these men and the events at www. fourchaplains.org

Famed trio sings old favorites Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

TREASURE COAST – George Grove was 9 when his sister brought home a recording of a live concert by the Kingston Trio. He was so captivated by it that he taught himself the vocals and the instrumentals. While Grove didn’t join the group until 1976, he remains a proud keeper of a legacy that began in 1958 with the folk song “Tom Dooley.” The group is credited with leading a folk music revival that led to Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary and Joan Baez. Today, the Kingston Trio consists of Grove, Bill Zorn and Rick Dougherty. None is an original member, but Grove has been with the group for 40 years. The musician spoke from his home in California about folk music and the music that changed his life. “I was a musician, playing the piano at 4,” he said. “I was enthralled by the music of the North Carolina mountains, where I was growing up. When I heard the (Kingston Trio) album, it was so infectious that it became part of my heart immediately. I was going to become a member of the group.” Grove said that when folk muPhoto courtesy of Paris Productions

First-time ‘Dolly’ excited to take on role Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
TREASURE COAST — There is a reason why “Hello, Dolly!” is performed so frequently. The Jerry Herman musical, based on a Thornton Wilder story, is a happy, exuberant show with one of the great female characters in musical theater, the irrepressible Dolly Levi. It opened on Broadway in 1964 and ran until 1970, winning 10 Tony Awards, a record that stood for 35 years. It has had several revivals and been made into an award-winning movie. The Riverside Theatre presents “Hello, Dolly! March 8-27. Michele Ragusa, who plays Dolly, spoke about taking on such an iconic role. Ragusa has appeared on Broadway several times, in shows that include “Young Frankenstein” and “Ragtime.” She has appeared in many regional theater productions and was nominated for a Carbonell Award for her performance last season in “The King and I” at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. “I’m very excited to play Dolly,”
she said. “Director James Brennan and I have worked together and he is one of my favorite directors. “We’ve done ‘Kiss Me Kate’ and ‘She Loves Me.’ and he directed me in stage symphony concerts of ‘Kiss Me Kate’ and ‘Funny Girl.’ We have a great history together.” Ragusa said that her director brings a lot more experience to this show than she has. “He has directed ‘Dolly’ a number of times,” she said. “I’ve never seen it on stage or the movie. Jimmy is so excited to have an actress who has no prior history. We’re going to create Dolly.” Ragusa had the pleasure of being offered the role without an audition, an honor that doesn’t happen very often in the theater. “Jimmy suggested his ‘wish list’ for Dolly,” Ragusa said. “Because of my relation with him and (the theater’s) respect for him, they looked at my resume and said, ‘Great.’ We met for lunch and he told me his choice for Horace was Adam Heller. I said, ‘I know him.’ It’s always lovely when you have a fondness and respect for your leading man.”

Kids found the Kingston Trio, especially in colleges. College kids could buy a guitar and play ‘Tom Dooley.’ It had only two chords. They could impress a girl. There was no other reason to play a guitar.” “Tom Dooley” was the Trio’s first big hit. The song was based on an actual murder, allegedly by a man named Tom Dula, in

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — He shook the hand of Frank Sinatra. There’s a brotherhood of men who stand out from others because of that simple but profound fact. To have the blessing of “Ole’ Blue Eyes” is to rank among men and women of legend. Tony Bennett is such a man. At nearly 90 years old, Tony “Benefit” Bennett (so named for his humanitarian efforts) is the last of the best. He came up alongside men and women like Perry Como and Rosemary Clooney, singing from the Great American Songbook. Sunrise Theater Executive Director John Wilkes took to the stage just prior to Tony Bennett’s appearance to introduce the show. “He is by far the most gentle man and performer you’d ever want to see,” he told the crowd. A familiar voice from Bennett’s past put it another way. “He’s the greatest singer in the world. Tony’s gonna come out here and play

the 1860s. The song was written by a local poet and the name pronounced as it was in the mountains: Dooley. “It was an intriguing murder,’’ Grove said. “They’re not sure if he was the murderer. Legal pamphlets about the trial and conviction said he wouldn’t be convicted in today’s world. He was illegally extradited to Tennessee, convicted on circumstantial evidence and incarcerated without a speedy trial. Who knows whether he did it? It’s created a career for me.” The original group first heard the song in San Francisco where an old-time banjo player, Frank Profitt, was playing it. “The Kingston Trio heard him and said, ‘Let’s do that,’” Grove said. “They had an ear and were always searching for material. They stole as many songs as they could.” Grove hastened to say that the group worked very hard, often doing three shows a night and then rehearsing and doing a post-mortem over the performances to improve them. Grove is responsible for the arrangements the group uses when it performs with symphonies. “Around 1979-80, I had been in the group a few years,” he said. “We were approached by the Atlanta Symphony to do a pop concert. I had an undergraduate degree in music, so they asked me to do the arrangements. We used them for 20 years. I wanted to write better music, and I didn’t have all the musical tools. I was living in Las Vegas and UNLV has a wonderful graduate department in music and jazz. “My undergraduate major was in piano and trumpet, but I hadn’t played them (in years.) The dean said, ‘Why don’t you consider jazz composition? It’s an amorphous area and will give you the intellectual tools.’”

Grove went on to get his degree and rewrote all of the arrangements. “They have a great deal more interest and complexity,” Grove said. “Symphonies say it’s the best they’ve seen. That’s a great compliment.” For the concert in Vero Beach, Grove said the audience can expect the familiar. “It’s like comfort food for the ears,” he said. “There will be the music, energy, stories and a good time. We talk between songs and we like to tell stories about the song: where we found it, why we chose it. Some are songs that were only sung in the studio but never performed on stage. A lot of times, people say, ‘That was my favorite song.’ Over the Kingston Trio’s tenure, they’ve recorded almost 400 songs. Every song becomes somebody’s favorite.” Grove said that finding these hidden gems was a priority. “Bill and Rick and I wanted to be able to perform songs they’d never heard on stage,” he said. “It was a good decision. People come to see us many times. They walk out knowing it was honest, well-performed and music they wanted to hear.” The Kingston Trio appears at the Emerson Center, 1590 27th Ave., Vero Beach, March 4 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $83 preferred, $58 orchestra and $38 balcony, Student balcony seats are $23. the seats out of this place,” announced a youthful Frank Sinatra, recorded decades ago and now included as part of “The Tony Bennett Show.” It’s an endorsement from one of the most successful entertainers in the world. At one point in the program Bennett referred to Sinatra as “my best friend.” An ever-evolving artist, backed by a jazz quartet, who once said he tried singing the songs in his set as if they were being sung for the very first time, Bennett not only took the stage at the Sunrise Theater in Fort Pierce. He owned it. When he appeared from behind the curtain, the house erupted in applause and cheers, as if a thousand people had just seen an old friend at the same time. Dressed in a cream coat and dark slacks, the ever dapper Tony Bennett crooned through two hours’ worth of songs that sang of melancholy, elated love and broken hearts. Greeted with no less than 6 standing ovations, he soft-shoed across the stage, forgot a few lines and had a few laughs. He did it without breaking a sweat and without
ever dropping his trademark smile. Through decades of concerts which began in the early 1950’s, Bennett has had the good fortune of maintaining one of the most instantly recognizable singing voices in the industry. His smooth, gravelly voice cut through the auditorium in a way that seemed to embed itself into the furnishings. At one point he performed an entire song without his microphone. Whether it was to show off or to cover up a technical glitch is a mystery, but the performer didn’t miss a beat. He sang to the rafters. Concertgoer Peter Torelli says he’s seen Bennett a number of times and is never disappointed. “There’s a lot of power behind that voice. He’s still got it. Nobody sings like Tony does.” Seeing a show at the Sunrise Theater is a trip back in time to Fort Pierce’s quiet heritage. It’s instantly evident that legends of entertainment like Loretta Lynn, Paul Anka and now Tony Bennett have left their mark. It’s in the walls, the curtains and the fabric of the chairs. Mr. Bennett’s heart may be in San Francisco, but for one night, he shared it with some of us here on the Treasure Coast.
