ST. LUCIE WEST — Catholics in St. Lucie West rejoiced at the sight of thick white smoke, which billowed out of the Sistine Chapel chimney in Vatican City last Wednesday, signaling cardinals had chosen a new pope. Lake Charles resident and St. Bernadette Catholic Church parishioner Judy Wheeler said she knew the moment Pope Francis, 76, appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica that he was the correct choice ordained by the holy spirit. “The cardinals and the Holy Spirit picked the right person and I truly believe that,” said Wheeler who attended mass at the church the following morning. “He is going to touch everybody and every issue in a loving way.”

ST. LUCIE WEST — No evidence exists indicating St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara was ever hairless. Newborn and baby pictures have surfaced showing a then-toddler with thick locks on the top of his head. Even with a mandatory elementary school crew cut, Mascara had a thick mane. But on March 23, Mascara can’t elude the clippers any longer when he shaves his signature tresses and mustache for a good cause immediately following the New York Mets game at Tradition Field. “I’m going ‘chrome dome’ bald,” Mascara said. “As long as it brings attention to the need, I’m all in.” The bald movement to save the Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County, Chuck Hill Unit, was start-

Do You Really Believe You Can Get a Quality Hearing Aid For Less Than $900? Don’t Waste Your Time Chasing Deals That Don’t Exist! Read What Your Neighbors Have to Say About Mutters Hearing.

American Owned and Operated

You Can Experience the Mutter Difference Florida State Licensed Hearing Aid Specialist Joe Mutter, owner of Mutter’s Hearing Center states, “Our typical patient is a current client referral, or someone who bought a hearing aid elsewhere and that product did not fit their needs, or someone who has had a negative customer service experience elsewhere with an inexperienced or unskilled hearing aid provider. “People simply come here hoping to improve their quality of life by improving their hearing.” In many instances patients that need hearing aids have chased those nonexistent newspaper deals or specials and bought lower technology hearing aids.

Founded in 1967, Starkey products have revolutionized the hearing aid industry and allowed hearing professionals to offer the highest quality products to patients. Starkey is the only American-owned and operated hearing aid company. Starkey is an industry leader with over 400 scientists and engineers dedicated to the advancement of hearing aid and hearing loss technologies. There are two main obstacles keeping people from getting their hearing loss taken care of one is the price of quality hearing aids and the second is stigmas associated with hearing aid use. There are a number of ways to finance hearing instruments. We can work with folks to get them into quality hearing aids. As far as quality product goes, we fit clients with superior hearing aids that fit their lifestyles and their financial concerns.

Hearing aids are designed to help clarify muffled, distorted sound and allow you to hear through noise. Quality hearing aids will help with that. You have to remember that this is an important investment in their hearing. “People who chase the deals they see advertised out there for blowout sales’ or Hearing Aids starting at $895.00 and the like… are fooling themselves, those deals simply do not exist,”

“It’s a joy to do business with Mutters Hearing because #1 Everything is potentially and fully explained and #2 Never once have I ever come away with the feeling I have been taken.” George & Connie Kelly

“It was a great experience, he didn’t rush me and wanted to hear my story .” CeciL Walker/Port St. Lucie

Mr. Mutter explains. “I don’t want to be a drive-thru-style office. I want patients to leave here with a thorough understanding of the product they are buying and how it will help them to hear better because when you suffer from loss of hearing, it diminishes your quality of life and isolates you. I want to enhance quality of life.

Do You Need a No-Cost Hearing Evaluation?

Those who suspect they suffer from hearing loss should obtain a thorough clinical hearing evaluation; Mutter’s Hearing Center provides those at no cost. This clinical evaluation will determine if your hearing and understanding of human speech can be corrected with hearing aids. You may have hearing loss if: • People say you are shouting when you talk to them • You need the TV or radio turned up louder than other people do • You often ask people to repeat themselves because you can’t hear or understand them, especially in groups or when there is noise Don’t Wait - Every Day Matters • You can hear better out of one ear than the other Mr. Mutter emphasizes that patients should not always look for • You have to strain to hear the lowest cost hearing aid on the market. He says fit and perfor• If things just sound unclear and not as bright as they used to its mance are the two most important factors. time to get tested. “Joe Mutter has provided me with the best Hearing

“I’ve worn hearing aids for years, Joe really knows his stuff and he is exceptional to deal with.” Shelly Ludmerer/Port St. Lucie This gives them a negative first experience and they simply give up on hearing aids. The provider they chose at the time quite easily put was more interested in their checkbooks than the quality of their hearing. They did not explain fully the benefits of quality hearing aids; they went for the quick sale because they saw the patient expressed concerns about the cost of quality aids.

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Alejandro Saez and Andrew Itnyre, both of St. Lucie West, participated in ‘Grappling for Gary’, a fundraiser for St. Lucie County Sheriff’s deputy Sgt. Gary Morales, who was killed in the line of duty late last month. The event was hosted by American Top Team Legacy gym in St. Lucie West where Morales trained. Both Saez and Itnyre were looked after by Morales when he was their school resource officer at Centennial High School.

ST. LUCE WEST — Despite the tears and anguish, a still-grieving Morales family said it’s caught a glimmer of a silver lining thanks to the enormous show of community support displayed during the close-knit unit’s most trying time. Brian Morales, 42, who said coping with his younger brother’s loss has been devastating, said the unexpected and expansive support has been a huge emotional crutch. “For days we congregated at my parent’s house (in Lake Charles),” Brian Morales said. “People would bring food, cold cuts and letters

of support. It’s just awesome.” During St. Lucie County Sheriff Sgt. Gary Morales’s March 4 funeral, which attracted more than 4,000 from around the state and country, Brian Morales often looked on in awe. “It was a nice, warm feeling,” he said. “We saw all of the people who took the time out of their schedules to honor my brother and what he stood for.” Sgt. Gary Morales was fatally shot in the line of duty on Feb. 28. Authorities say Eriese Tisdale, 25, is the man who pulled the trigger. Tisdale is being held on a murder charge in the death penalty-eligible case, the state

102 never looked this good By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

ST. LUCIE WEST — Just two months shy of her 102nd birthday, St. Lucie West resident Yvonne Hoag ushered in the monumental age with grace and a timeless beauty that hasn’t faded a bit during her long lifetime. Hoag celebrated her May 31 birthday early during a surprise luncheon at the PGA Golf Club last week. The event was hosted by more than 35 of Hoag’s friends, who are also fellow members of The Mermaids water aerobics group of The Lakes at Sun Terrace. Hoag said she couldn’t think of a better way to mark the day than with her beloved girlfriends, with whom she shared a toast of red wine. “What can I tell you?” Hoag said. “It’s wonderful to have friends like this.” Hoag was born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1911. She has one brother and two sisters, whom she outlived. Hoag and her family emigrated to Montreal, Canada,

at age 16, where she later met and married her late husband, Herbert J. Hoag of 67 years, who died in 2008. The couple raised two sons in New Hyde Park, N.Y. She has five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Hoag relocated to St. Lucie West more than two decades ago. Throughout her lifetime, Hoag has traveled the world and learned four different languages: French, Italian, German and English. During her earlier years, Hoag taught French to children, whom she still keeps in touch with. “So much has happened,” Hoag reflected. “World war ... but, I’ve always been a happy person and tried to help people and I still do.” Hoag said the secret to a long and happy life is a pure heart. “I lived a good life. I tried to be kind to people and understanding,” she said. “I’m a happy person. I have a wonderful family.” Hoag said out of all her years, the happiest day was when she married her husband more than

and French to the other girls.” Mermaids founder Virginia Riddle, 87, said it’s hard to have a bad day when it begins with Hoag and the other members of the swim group. “We have laughter every morning at the pool, so you have to be happy every day when you start out that way,” Riddle said. Canadian neighbor Lucie Mer-

cier, 58, said a tough cookie lies under Hoag’s delicate exterior. “If she has pain, she won’t tell you. She never complains,” Mercier said. “And she still loves wine.” Mercier said she admires Hoag’s spirit. “What I love about Yvonne is her joy of living,” Mercier said. “If I live that long, I’ll be like her.”

70 years ago. “I married an American and I was happy as could be,” Hoag said. Friends were asked to bring only one gift: a skein of baby yarn. Hoag said she was thrilled by the unique present because her favorite hobby is to knit newborn hats for babies birthed at Martin Medical Center in Stuart. Hoag estimates she’s knitted hundreds of hats during her many years of performing the service. “It’s a good cause for the poor children. I make the baby hats,” Hoag said with a soft smile. Friend and neighbor Joanie Kissel, 73, said she’s never met anyone quite like Hoag. “She’ll knit up 20 or 30 of them and someone will drive her to Martin Medical,” Kissel said. “She gets a thrill taking them right up to the floor.” Some of Hoag’s other favorite hobbies include gardening, shopping, crocheting, dining out and swimming every weekday morning with The Mermaids for the past 20 years. “I go swimming every day, but I haven’t been because it’s been a little bit cool out,” Hoag said. Seasonal St. Lucie West resident Simone Mitchell, 63, of Montreal, Canada said she couldn’t imagine life without Hoag as a friend. “We love her,” Mitchell said. “My

city a year later. He was made a cardinal in 2001 by Pope John Paul II. Francis supersedes Pope Benedict XVI, who resigned from the papal office effective Feb. 28, citing health issues. Benedict now goes by the name Pope Emeritus. As the 266th leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Cathoilcs, Francis made history as the first non-European pope in the modern era, the first Latin American, the first Jesuit and the first to choose the name Francis. Elaine Meahl of St. Lucie West said from her perspective, the name is a miracle in its own right. “It was a very strange thing that happened with me yesterday prior to the time they came out and announced his name,” Meahl said as tears streamed down her face. “I silently said to myself, ‘St. Francis of Assisi, please make it be a humble man.’” “I’m overwhelmed with joy … this is very special,” she said. “(Judging by) the way he’s lived his life, he’ll be a pope for the people and by the people.” During his initial appearance after the conclave’s first full day of deliberation, Francis asked the faithful to pray for him. “Now, I would like to give you a blessing, but first I want to ask you for a favor,” the pontiff said. “Before the bishop blesses the people, I ask that you pray to the Lord so that he blesses me.” St. Lucie West resident Ronald Caccippio rose early to attend

mass to honor Francis’s wishes. “Our new Pope Francis has asked us to pray for him, so we gather here this morning at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church to honor our new pope.” Parish priest, the Rev. Son Hoang, said he’s proud to be a Catholic. “Our new pope is the best. It’s what we need,” Hoang said. “What I like most about him is he’s a man of prayer, simple and direct. He lives in solidarity with the poor and people who are unfortunate.” In a prepared statement, the Catholic Diocese of Palm Beach said the short conclave is a sign of unity. The diocese governs over parishes in Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. It oversees 267,882 Catholics and 53 parishes and missions, according to its website. “We rejoice with the entire Church on the election of Pope Francis as the Shepherd of the Universal Church,” the statement reads. “The fact that the Cardinals chose him so quickly, especially in view of the requirement of 2/3 vote, is a sign of their unified consensus that he is the most appropriate choice for this ministry of service.” “He is a very loving, humble, spiritual and capable man with a special love for the poor and marginalized in keeping with the name of his patron, Saint Francis of Assisi.”

The challenge was simple: If the Boys & Girls Club raised $150,000 to keep the unit open, Kelly, Mascara and St. Lucie County Fire District Chief Ron Parrish would go bald. Local businesses, organizations and individuals stepped up to the plate to make the campaign a success, club representatives said. The Chuck Hill Unit, located on Northwest Marion Avenue in Port St. Lucie, serves 150 members. It costs the organization $1,000 a child annually and is kept as low as $10 per year for members who are on free or reduced lunch, club representatives said. The non profit organization, which is dedicated to serving community youth by providing a safe place to learn, grow and enhance character development, currently serves 4,200 kids, ages 5 to 18 in St. Lucie County, representatives said. The unit announced in September it was in danger of closing its doors if the money wasn’t raised. As part of the club’s fundraising efforts, county administrator Faye Outlaw and Treasure Coast dermatologist Shamsher Singh were the highest bidders to be the

Only cemetery in city offers peace of mind By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

nrodriguez@yourvoiceweekly.com

PORT ST. LUCIE — Port St. Lucie’s only cemetery gives the living an earthly reminder that their departed loved one is always resting peacefully nearby. Owner Mark Riposta hopes Rolling Oaks Cemetery and Cremation Gardens’ exclusive location and pristine manicured gardens give the living in St. Lucie West and surrounding areas that kind of peace of mind only his grounds can provide. Port St. Lucie resident Art Ybarra, who has lived in the area for 47 years, can attest to Riposta’s philosophy. After his son’s death at age 27 in 2006, Ybarra chose to bury him in Rolling Oaks before Riposta purchased the property. “It was the only one in Port St. Lucie at the time. It had potential,” Ybarra said. “This man here (Riposta) has showed me the potential. It’s just unbelievable.” Riposta was a pioneer in his family who strayed away from a typical career. His skill of refurbishing interiors of houses in Maine and New Jersey created an income for a young Riposta and lead him into the funeral business. The 35-year industry veteran, who still owns funeral homes in the northeast, bought the 12-year-old cemetery in Port St. Lucie in Nov. 2012. Rolling Oaks does not include a funeral home, he said. From that November day, it became Riposta’s mission to remodel the ground’s sprawling 18 acres and transform it in to lush gardens with thick St. Augustine grass, granite

mausoleums and lakes with cascading water. He hopes to complete his vision for the little-known gem in the next year or two. “It’s Port St. Lucie’s best-kept secret,” Riposta said. “Nobody knows about it. Riposta hopes word spreads after people see the perfectly manicured grounds. “I’ve already had some success with that,” Riposta said of people who have discovered the cemetery. “People come in here and say, ‘It’s beautiful. This is where I want my family because I know you guys are going to take care of it.’” Plans for expansion are already under way, said Riposta, who is in the process of adding more mausoleums. “We’re adding … peace gardens column bearings and column bearings with the praying hands,” Riposta said. “We’ve started gardens specifically for those of the Jewish faith. We have a Catholic garden already and a veteran’s garden, which we’ve just expanded.” Riposta said bigger spaces constructed from sturdy granite for couples and entire families are available for purchase. “We’ll offer private family estates, which are above ground, unlike the community mausoleum, which we already have,” Riposta said. Riposta said there are four acres being used. He said many of the purchased plots are from living individuals and couples who want their final plans set in stone to eliminate worry for family members. “The worst time to make this decision is the day you have to make this decision,” Riposta said. “You’re making choices emotionally. A lot of times people want to do more because the person’s just gone and they might not

An especially poignant time, Brian Morales said, was during the 26-mile-long processional drive from Fort Pierce’s Westside Baptist Church to Forest Hills Memorial Park in Palm City, where the public servant and father of two was laid to rest. Brian Morales said he’ll never forget the scores who lined the streets waving flags for the fallen hero. “Words can’t explain it. It put a smile on our faces,” he said. “When we saw all those people, we were crying for joy, not sadness.” Brian Morales said a simple gesture like a hug or an understanding nod from a passerby would have sufficed. But he said he’s forever grateful for the compassionate community which has gone above and beyond. Brian Morales said his brother’s two young daughters, Brooklynn, 8, and Jordan, 6, are handling their father’s death differently and age-appropriately. “Brooklynn understands it,” he said. “We’ve had a couple of talks with Jordan. One moment she understands. Then four hours later, she’ll say, ‘Mommy, Daddy and Brooklynn are taking me to the zoo. Are you coming too?’” Brian Morales said if they’re

Gary Morales’s widow, Holly and her two girls. Brian Morales said he wants his brother to be remembered as a loving and caring person. “I want them (the public) to know he was good hearted,” he said. “He kept his heart on his sleeve. He would give anyone the shirt off of his back at the drop of a hat if they needed it.” “That’s just something my parents instilled in me and my brothers … the fantastic four.”

All for one goal

“Compared to last year, our strengths are different, but while we may have had more talent then, we played more as individuals.” Meredith Flynn infielder

“This year, we play as more as a team because we are all striving for the same thing.” Centennial held an 8-7 record at the time this story went to press. The Lady Eagles will have hosted Jensen Beach High School on March 19 and South Fork High School on March 21. Leading the team into action is first-year head coach Jennifer Register, who took over a roster replacing nine seniors from the previous season. “The beginning was pretty rough,” Register said. “We thought we’d hit some bumps in the road, but starting from the middle of the season, we are getting to that point where we are playing like we should.” Register’s background in-

cludes a playing career at Western Washington University and giving private softball lessons before the opportunity came to coach at Centennial. Establishing her program as a first-year coach hasn’t been easy for Register as she’s guiding her players while pregnant. “It’s been difficult because I haven’t been able to show and participate as much as I normally would,” Register said. “That’s a huge part of my coaching asset.” Nonetheless, Register showed her sense of humor when asked of her coaching performance to this point. “If I had to give the two of us a grade, I think this combined effort would earn a B-plus,” Register said.

ST. LUCIE WEST — Baseball and softball often are characterized as individual sports disguised as a team sports. There are relationships between pitchers and catchers as well as the tandems within the infield; however, compared to other team sports, there aren’t nearly as many parts needing to run in sync with one another. Despite the dynamics of the diamond, the players taking the field for the St. Lucie West Centennial softball team believe the key to future success is synergy. “There aren’t any cliques on this team,” junior designated hitter Caroline Klaffer said. “Everybody is one. We all have the same goal and desire to win.” It sounds like a purpose that all teams aspire to have, but that doesn’t always come to fruition because high school sports include a variety of participants. The combination of the senior working on earning an athletic scholarship, the junior who is dying for playing time and the sophomore on the end of the bench who couldn’t care less doesn’t create a winning formula.

After a slow 3-6 start, the Lady Eagles are confident that a collective bond that’s been building throughout the year will be enough to spring them into the final portion of the season. “We started off really rough,” senior infielder and leader Meredith Flynn said. “We were making a lot of errors, but now, we are bonding really well and have gotten much better together since the beginning of the season. “We are kind of like a family.” On the playing field and in the locker room, happiness and closeness is generally synonymous with a winning result. While Centennial finished the season with an area-best 15-8 record, they were quickly eliminated in the district tournament. While last year’s squad wasn’t a contentious flock of Lady Eagles, Flynn believes this year’s united, tight-knit crew has learned the lessons from last season’s disappointment. “Over the course of the year, I feel like this team has come together more,” Flynn said. “Compared to last year, our strengths are different, but while we may have had more talent then, we played more as individuals.”

St. Lucie County School Board earns national transparency award FORT PIERCE — Today, Sunshine Review, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to government transparency, released the winners of the fourth annual Sunny Awards and among the winners was the St. Lucie County School Board. The award, which honors the most transparent government websites in the nation, went to 250 government entities with Florida receiving the most Sunny Awards. “Our school board members know the importance of promoting transparency in everything we do. We are honored to receive a Sunny Award and will continue to empower citizens by providing the necessary information to keep them informed on the actions their government is taking on their behalf,” said Superintendent Michael Lannon. For the 2013 awards, editors at Sunshine Review analyzed

more than 1,000 qualifying government websites and graded each on a 10-point transparency checklist. Editors looked at content available on government websites against what should be provided. They sought information on items such as budgets, meetings, lobbying, financial audits, contracts, academic performance, public records and taxes. The winners of the Sunny Award all received an “A” grade during the extensive grading process. “The Sunny Awards recognize governments that make transparency a priority. The winners of the Sunny Awards are cities, counties and school districts that proactively share the public information that empowers citizens and keeps government accountable to the people,” said Michael Barnhart, president of Sunshine Review. “We would like to congratulate the St. Lucie County School Board for being a champion for transparency and

serving as a leader to every state and local government around the nation.” Eight states earned nearly half of the 247 Sunny Awards given. The leading states were Florida (25), Virginia (19), Illinois (19), California (12), Georgia (12), Kansas (11), Oklahoma (10) and Colorado (9). In addition, 35 counties, 22 cities and 42 school districts from all over the country earned the coveted “A+” grade. The Sunny Awards announcement falls during the annual “Sunshine Week,” March 10-16, a period nationally recognized

by hundreds of media and civic organizations, that celebrates the efforts of activists and the strides taken towards open government. Sunshine Review is a nonprofit organization dedicated to state and local government transparency. Sunshine Review collaborates with individuals and organizations throughout America in the cause of an informed citizenry and a transparent government. Since its inception in 2008, Sunshine Review has analyzed the websites of all 50 states and more than 7,000 state and local entities.

VGTI Florida, Jupiter Medical Center, and Martin Health System partnering to further medical research in South Florida For Your Voice News & Views The Vaccine & Gene Therapy Institute of Florida signed Affiliation Agreements today with two of the region’s leading healthcare systems, Martin Health System and Jupiter Medical Center, to move forward with the beginnings of a new clinical trial consortium in South Florida. In signing the Affiliation Agreements with both hospitals, VGTI Florida has honored part of their commitment to the Florida Innovation Incentive Fund, which assisted in funding of their new state-of-theart facility. “The three of us taking the first steps in this clinical trial consortium is a great example of medical and research institutions working

together to give back to our community in the form of better and more personalized health care,” says Mel Rothberg, chief operating officer at VGTI Florida. “Moving forward we hope to expand our clinical trial activities and see this consortium grow to include other Florida regional hospitals.” The establishment of the clinical trial consortium was celebrated at VGTI Florida’s facility at the Tradition Center for Innovation in Port St. Lucie with an agreement-signing ceremony. Community leaders and representatives from all three organizations gathered to view the signing of the agreements and enjoyed a luncheon following the ceremony.

VGTI from page 16 “This clinical trial consortium brings us closer to achieving our translational research goals and in doing so we pursue the opportunities to engage our regional colleagues and the community in our collective research efforts,” says Dr. Rafick Pierre-Sékaly, chief scientific officer and co-director at VGTI Florida. “Jupiter Medical Center is proud to be a part of this collaboration. This clinical trial consortium is a great illustration of how biosciences were intended to act as a galvanizing force in Florida, spreading an knowledge-based economy throughout our region,” said John D. Couris, president and CEO of Jupiter Medical Center. “By creating this inclusive partnership, everybody wins — the scientists, the hospitals, and most importantly, the communities in which we serve.” Participation in this consortium is a strong movement forward into furthering South Florida’s positive reputation in the research and medical fields. VGTI Florida has hired a medical director to work with the Business Development group in attracting interest in sponsors and to oversee operations within the clinical trial consortium. “Having facilitated access to Martin Health System’s and Jupiter Medical Center’s established clini-

Robitaille, president and chief executive officer of Martin Health. “This is an exciting opportunity to continue building the future of research in our region, while helping to change the way medicine is being delivered for years to come.” VGTI Florida is an immunological research institute that is on an urgent mission to transform scientific discoveries into novel treatments and cures for existing and emerging infectious diseases, influenza and cancer. Woman makes treasures from trash By Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@yourvoiceweekly.com

ST. LUCIE WEST — In the Middle Ages, alchemists tried unsuccessfully to make gold out of lead. In 2013, Nichole Rouse has a more modest goal. She takes unwanted items and finds new uses for them. She is saving the environment, one item at a time. Rouse, a busy mom with four children, sat on the board of Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful. She wanted to start a reuse center, where people could bring unwanted items. “I approached Waste Pro and

asked if they would provide funds for a storage center to house the Reuse Center,” Rouse said. “They agreed to pay the storage facility rent for the center. It takes in things people would throw away. We repurpose them, find a new use or upcycle them, take something old and make something new.” Rouse accepts virtually everything. If a thrift store wouldn’t take it, she will. “I take toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, dental floss cases, potato chip bags, the inner lining from cereal boxes, used gift cards,

There’s almost nothing we don’t take. We take clothes with holes for the fabric.” The Reuse Center is located at Security Self Storage next to QVC. Any item there is free to anyone in the community. While volunteers are there on Tuesdays from 9:30-10:30 a.m., and in the late afternoon on Sundays, it’s a good idea to call first to make sure someone will be there. Items that Rouse can’t give away go to a company that upcycles the items and sells them. Rouse earns points for the items donated and she is able to earn recycled items such as handbags that she uses in presentations before schools and other organizations. “I make a lot of stuff myself,” she said. “I take notebook wire and make it into decorative window hearts. Some old wire is used for garden décor. Old T-shirts become reusable shopping bags and costumes come from fabric scraps.” Rouse sells many of these upcycled items at the Wednesday Fort Pierce Farmer’s Market. She also makes money from items she picks from the trash, refurbishes, and sells on Craigslist. “I trash pick four days a week,” Rouse said. “I find good things

and sell them. I upcycle products because I love making them. I educate people on Facebook about trash picking. I see fluorescent light bulbs that should not be at the curb. There are disposal bins for them at Lowe’s or Home Depot.” Rouse and her husband, Gerard, a state employee, began the trash picking once a week as a treasure hunt. It became addictive, but while she enjoys what she is doing, there is a serious purpose. She is passionate about educating people on the need for recycling and preserving the environment. “We are almost completely surrounded by water (in Florida,)” she said. “Plastic bags should be completely banned because the drains end up filled with plastic bags and they end up in the water system. You should be charged for plastic bags in this state, in my opinion.” Rouse will speak for free before any group that wants to listen to her message. “I believe it’s my life’s purpose to educate on the environment,” she said. “My kids love it. They trash pick and get free stuff. What I can’t sell goes to the Reuse Center. My kids think it’s cool when they (sell it and) start making money. The Reuse Center is located at 501 N.W. Bitchin’ Babes reflect on mid-life vices By Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@yourvoiceweekly.com

FORT PIERCE — The Four Bitchin’ Babes’ new show, “Mid Life Vices,” bills itself as a “celebration of whine, women and song.” For Sally Fingerett, founder of the troupe, it’s a continuation of a saga that began more than 20 years ago. The Babes come to the Sunrise Theatre on April 5 and Sally Fingerett spoke from her home in Chicago about their very funny journey. “It’s a guilt-free musical revue,” she said. “There are no regrets. Life is hopefully long and this is not a dress rehearsal. We’re doing it. The show is the Four Bitchin’ Babes’ brand of hu-

mor, (looking at life) with a wacky view-finder.” The group includes Fingerett, Debi Smith, Deirdre Flint and Marcy Marxner, who joined the Babes in 2012. “We’re all composers, comedians and actresses,” Fingerett said. “We write the songs. It’s a musical revue that journals the life of the Baby Boomer generation. As we age, we know we are getting older, but we won’t go quietly. I may look like I’m approaching 60, but inside, I’m a 9-year-old with a credit line. “It’s songs and stories about real life. We are four women who play our instruments and write our own songs. There is no agenda and it’s not political. It’s just fun.” Fingerett said that some of the success of the Babes is the result of how much they admire each other. “We travel so much together that we have to get along,” she said. “When we audition, we have to like them as a person, a sister. Camaraderie backstage translates onstage. The Photo courtesy of Kendra Chilson audience can see how much we adore each Four Bitchin’ Babes bring musical comedy to the Sunother. It’s a traveling sisterhood.” rise Theatre on April 5 as they present ‘Mid Life Vices: A Guilt-free Musical Revue.’

BABES from page 21 Fingerett said that audiences who have seen previous shows bring friends to new ones. That includes men. “Florida has been fabulous for the Babes,” she said. “We Love the audiences. Men should go. It’s a good way to get a lot of points. It’s not a chick flick. Why not spend an evening getting points and having fun?” Some of the songs reflect changes in the lives of the women. One, by Marcy Marxner, is called “Dim the Lights,” and deals with the reality of romance in the age of progressive lenses. “Marcy is a multi-Grammy-winning artist who rocks like Eric Clapton,” Fingerett said. “She breathes a little different life into the Babes.” The new show, as with all Babes shows, is about life in all its messiness. While there are poignant moments, the emphasis remains on laughter. “It’s a fun evening of music,” Fingerett said. “If they like Jimmy Buffett and Bonnie Raitt and add a little cabaret and a little Broadway, then they’ve got us.” Four Bitchin’ Babes present, “Mid Life Vices,” at the Sunrise Theatre, 117 S. Second St., Fort Pierce, on April 5 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $39 and $29. Call the box office at (772) 461-4775 or order online at www.sunrisetheatre.com.
