ST. LUCIE WEST — As millions of gays and lesbians across the country wait for the Supreme Court’s ruling in June on same-sex marriage, one local nonprofit group that aims to promote equality is organizing its annual gay pride festival. Cory Pfister, 31, president of Pride of the Treasure Coast, said this year’s PrideFest, held at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center on April 7, carries a little more weight than the eight that preceded it. Pfister said the historic Supreme court hearings

ST. LUCIE WEST — On a clear, sunny Friday morning, Jonathan Hanson walked into Tradition Field with a bittersweet feeling in his heart. Although he was ecstatic about seeing his favorite ballclub, Hanson understood he would have to wait another 11 months to see the New York Mets in action in his backyard. The lifelong Mets fan and St. Lucie West resident watched from the bleachers on the right field line as his team took the field for the final time at home during the 2013 spring training season.

Do You Really Believe You Can Get a Quality Hearing Aid For Less Than $900? Don’t Waste Your Time Chasing Deals That Don’t Exist! Read What Your Neighbors Have to Say About Mutters Hearing.

American Owned and Operated

You Can Experience the Mutter Difference Florida State Licensed Hearing Aid Specialist Joe Mutter, owner of Mutter’s Hearing Center states, “Our typical patient is a current client referral, or someone who bought a hearing aid elsewhere and that product did not fit their needs, or someone who has had a negative customer service experience elsewhere with an inexperienced or unskilled hearing aid provider. “People simply come here hoping to improve their quality of life by improving their hearing.” In many instances patients that need hearing aids have chased those nonexistent newspaper deals or specials and bought lower technology hearing aids.

Founded in 1967, Starkey products have revolutionized the hearing aid industry and allowed hearing professionals to offer the highest quality products to patients. Starkey is the only American-owned and operated hearing aid company. Starkey is an industry leader with over 400 scientists and engineers dedicated to the advancement of hearing aid and hearing loss technologies. There are two main obstacles keeping people from getting their hearing loss taken care of one is the price of quality hearing aids and the second is stigmas associated with hearing aid use. There are a number of ways to finance hearing instruments. We can work with folks to get them into quality hearing aids. As far as quality product goes, we fit clients with superior hearing aids that fit their lifestyles and their financial concerns.

Hearing aids are designed to help clarify muffled, distorted sound and allow you to hear through noise. Quality hearing aids will help with that. You have to remember that this is an important investment in their hearing. “People who chase the deals they see advertised out there for blowout sales’ or Hearing Aids starting at $895.00 and the like… are fooling themselves, those deals simply do not exist,”

“It’s a joy to do business with Mutters Hearing because #1 Everything is potentially and fully explained and #2 Never once have I ever come away with the feeling I have been taken.” George & Connie Kelly

“It was a great experience, he didn’t rush me and wanted to hear my story .” CeciL Walker/Port St. Lucie

Mr. Mutter explains. “I don’t want to be a drive-thru-style office. I want patients to leave here with a thorough understanding of the product they are buying and how it will help them to hear better because when you suffer from loss of hearing, it diminishes your quality of life and isolates you. I want to enhance quality of life.

Do You Need a No-Cost Hearing Evaluation?

Those who suspect they suffer from hearing loss should obtain a thorough clinical hearing evaluation; Mutter’s Hearing Center provides those at no cost. This clinical evaluation will determine if your hearing and understanding of human speech can be corrected with hearing aids. You may have hearing loss if: • People say you are shouting when you talk to them • You need the TV or radio turned up louder than other people do • You often ask people to repeat themselves because you can’t hear or understand them, especially in groups or when there is noise Don’t Wait - Every Day Matters • You can hear better out of one ear than the other Mr. Mutter emphasizes that patients should not always look for • You have to strain to hear the lowest cost hearing aid on the market. He says fit and perfor• If things just sound unclear and not as bright as they used to its mance are the two most important factors. time to get tested. “Joe Mutter has provided me with the best Hearing

“I’ve worn hearing aids for years, Joe really knows his stuff and he is exceptional to deal with.” Shelly Ludmerer/Port St. Lucie This gives them a negative first experience and they simply give up on hearing aids. The provider they chose at the time quite easily put was more interested in their checkbooks than the quality of their hearing. They did not explain fully the benefits of quality hearing aids; they went for the quick sale because they saw the patient expressed concerns about the cost of quality aids.

JENSEN BEACH — A month after his brother’s death, Brian Morales said the pain hasn’t dulled, but does subside for a short while during community events held in honor of the slain law enforcement officer. “We’re still recovering from my brother’s loss. Events like this allow us to keep a smile on our faces and if there are any type of tears, they are tears of joy, tears of being proud,” Brian Morales, 42, said. “And also, it’s good to get us out and mingle, as well as my children to get out and play with their cousins and just

strangers.” The Morales family gathered at Shuckers on the Beach during a fundraising event hosted by the restaurant. St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Sgt. Gary Morales, 35, was fatally shot in the line of duty on Feb. 28. Authorities say Eriese Tisdale, 25, is the man who pulled the trigger. Last week a grand jury indicted Tisdale on a first degree murder charge. Prosecutors filed a formal notice of intent to seek death on March 27. Tisdale, who’s being held in a Martin County jail, is expected to plead “not guilty” during his arraignment on April 19.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against the man charged with murdering St. Lucie Sheriff’s Sgt. Gary Morales, 35, on Feb. 28 during a traffic stop and pursuit in Fort Pierce. State Attorney Bruce Colton said his office filed a formal notice of intent to seek death on March 27 after a grand jury indicted Eriese Alphonso Tisdale, 25, on a first-degree murder charge. “The grand jury took approximately 10 to 15 minutes to deliberate,” said Colton, who will try the case alongside Chief Assistant State Attorney Tom Bakkedahl. Colton said the case has sufficient evidence to seek the death penalty. “Ethically we’re not allowed to

discuss the circumstances right now,” Colton said. “(But) there are sufficient aggravating circumstances.” “In order to seek the death penalty, we look to see if there are any aggravating circumstances,” Colton continued. “If aggravating circumstances outweigh mitigating circumstances, then we make the decision to seek the death penalty.” Aggravating factors are any relevant circumstances that make the harshest penalty appropriate in the judgment of the jurors. Mitigating factors are any evidence presented regarding the defendant’s character or the circumstances of the crime, which would cause a juror to vote for a lesser sentence. Disabled athletes overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles

By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

TRADITION — No matter the circumstance, there is always a light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. One Port St. Lucie resident is living proof. At age 15, Jason Dugmore, 38, sustained a traumatic spinal cord injury after he broke his neck diving into shallow water. Doctors said he would never walk or swim again. Life as Dugmore knew it was over. But that didn’t derail his tenacity for living. “Don’t focus on what you can’t do, but focus on what you can do,” he said. With that philosophy in mind, Dugmore finished the March 23 Torrey Pines Race for Research half marathon on a hand cycle in 01:16:19.647. Dugmore is the founder of The Florida Treasure Coast chapter of Achilles International, a nonprofit organization that aims to help people with disabilities to participate in mainstream sports and achieve personal success and lower barriers to live a fulfilling

life. In 1976, Dick Traum, an above the knee amputee, became the first amputee to run the New York City Marathon. Seven years after the historic run, Traum founded Achilles International. “I want to bring awareness that people with disabilities can enter into mainstream races and achieve the satisfaction of being able to race with regular people, because technically we are regular people,” Dugmore said. “It’s

just that some of us have sustained injuries or some of us have been born with a disability. It’s nice to not be separated from the regular runners.” Dugmore hopes to inspire others suffering with a similar disability to rebound quickly and grab life by the horns. “It took 22 years for me to get involved in the sport,” he said. “I want to get people who are newly injured to not have to wait so

long.” Dugmore was one of 20 other hand cyclists who completed the 13.1 kilometer race. Each had their own tale of hope. Despite having lost the use of both legs, Keith Winchell, 50, of The Villages near Ocala, finished first in 38:37.790. The U.S. Air Force veteran, who served for 24 years, was involved in a motor-

METS from page 1 Aided by four scoreless pitched innings by right-hander Matt Harvey and fourth inning RBI hits from Ruben Tejada and Collin Cowgill, the Mets defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 7-2 to complete the 26th spring training season at Tradition Field in St. Lucie West. While it’s always tough to say so long, Hanson, draped in a blue David Wright T-shirt and New York Mets baseball cap, is appreciative at the chance to see the team he grew up watching and supporting. “This part always stinks,” Hanson said. “As much as I can’t wait for every February to hit and for pitchers and catchers to report, I always personally dread the day they pack up and head up north.” “But I just feel lucky to have my favorite team and some of the best baseball players on the planet come down every March and play some ball. I always try to catch a couple of games with some friends, eat a couple of hot dogs and enjoy some baseball.” The Mets finished spring training with a 15-15 record (7-9 at Tradition Field). But before the ballclub traveled to the Big Apple, excitement of Opening Day baseball in New York was tempered with news announced on March 28 that two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana will likely miss the season after tearing the anterior capsule in his left (throwing) shoulder for the second time of his career. Santana had the same injury in September 2010 and was forced

to miss the entire 2011 season. “I talked to him Thursday night and he was just in I think a bit of shock,” third baseman David Wright said before the home finale. “I don’t think anybody was expecting this because he kind of did everything possible to rehab this thing and did everything the right way and for this to happen for everyone including him is disheartening and kind of shocking. In 2008, Santana signed a six-year, $137.5 million contract with the Mets, with $31 million owed to the pitcher this season. With this new injury, the Santana career as a Met and Major League pitcher may be over. The injuries have taken away from Santana’s tenure with the Mets, but in the eyes of many New York fans, the massive contract has been worth every penny because of Santana’s magic on June 1, 2012. Santana tossed the first and only no-hitter in the Mets’ 51year history in a 134-pitch performance against the Cardinals. His gallant effort will always be remembered. “That night will always be the way I choose to remember Johan,” Hanson said with a wide grin. “We haven’t had much to cheer about lately, but that was his moment. He provided us Mets fans with something they’ve never seen, even though the team has been around for over half a century.” “I will always be grateful.” In the 2012, the Mets were fourth in the NL East division, finishing with a 74-88 record. The Mets have not made the playoffs since 2006.

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer New York Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy comes around second on his way to score during the last Spring Training home game of the season at Tradition Field Friday, March 29 in St. Lucie West. Murphy went 2 for 4 with a run scored in the 7-2 victory over the Cardinals.

bond in a Martin County jail until a jury hears the case, which could be a year or longer, Colton said. Tisdale was transferred from St. Lucie County for safety reasons. Colton said the defense discovery process is what delays a trial. Criminal discovery is the process by which a defendant can get information about their case held by prosecutors, including police reports and witness statements. “From our standpoint, we’ll be ready in the next month or so,” Colton said. “I don’t know if the defense will be ready that quickly.” Tisdale also was indicted on charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a felon and fleeing and eluding law enforcement officers.

Tisdale is expected to plead not guilty during his arraignment, which is set for April 19 at 9:30 a.m. He has already requested a jury trial. According to reports, Tisdale will submit a written plea beforehand and will not be present during the hearing. An attempt to reach Tisdale’s attorney, Mark Harllee, was unsuccessful. Harllee was scheduled to be out of the office until after press time. According to arrest records, Tisdale said the killing was self-defense. Morales had at least three gunshot wounds. One wound was to the side of the head, the report states. Morales was still seated in the driver’s seat of the patrol car with his gun still in the holster when other deputies arrived at the scene, the report says. Tisdale has declined press requests for interviews.

POSTAL from page 1 workers share the same sentiment, which makes the thought of eliminating Saturday delivery a hard notion to accept. Bebsole and more than 100 fellow letter carriers, postal advocates and members of the public gathered last Sunday to protest U.S. Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe’s request before Congress to cut Saturday delivery starting in August. If Donahoe has his way, only packages, also known as parcels, would be delivered on Saturdays. Donahoe said the slash would keep the system operational. Bebsole called the move “irresponsible.” “The postmaster general was irresponsible for coming on TV and making an announcement that nobody knew anything about,” she said. “He has contracts with unions and mailers and all of us.” “And now Congress seems like they’re trying to stop him,” Bebsole said. “He (Donahoe) would have to dismantle the whole postal service to do what he says he wants to do. That doesn’t happen overnight.” The protest, which was held outside of the Midway Road post office in Fort Pierce, was one of 100 of its kind that day around the country. Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Dist. 18 joined a Palm

Beach rally. In an emailed statement, Murphy said “Since 1775, the United States Postal Service has been an important part of our nation, impacting the way we communicate and our economy.” “… But the USPS is currently facing grave economic difficulty,” Murphy continued. “This is in part due to a decline in revenues due to an increase in digital communications, but is also to a larger extent due to a flawed formula used to calculate the USPS’ contributions to their retirement system, and a requirement that the USPS must pre-fund 75 years of future retiree health benefits in just 10 years. This is something that no other agency or company is required to do.” Murphy went on to say there are better solutions to consolidate debt. “I also believe that, instead of reducing service, we need to find a comprehensive way to address the underlying financial hardships facing the USPS.” “I am proud to cosponsor the Postal Service Protection Act, which would end the pre-funding mandate, allow the USPS to recover pension overpayments, protect six-day delivery, re-establish overnight delivery, preserve rural post offices, allow the USPS to provide new products and services to generate revenue, provide

the USPS flexibility in setting postal rates and recalculate the USPS’ pension contributions,” Murphy said. Kevin Byrne, a Port St. Lucie resident and letter carrier since 1978, agrees with Murphy’s proposal. Byrne, whose route is in Stuart, is also the Congressional district Liason for the National Association of Letter Carriers for the 18th Congressional District. “The real reason the postal service is losing money is because in 2006, we were mandated to pay for 75 years’ worth of health benefits for future retirees within a 10 year period,” Byrne said. “That accounts for 80 percent of the money the postal service has lost in recent years…” “… There is $45 billion we’ve put into that account. Just compounding interest alone would likely cover. We’ve got enough to cover many, many years into the future already.” Byrne said the move would undoubtedly translate into job loss. “The elimination of Saturday delivery would mean about 25,000 city letter carrier jobs would be lost,” Byrne said. “And overall, there would be closer to 80,000 postal jobs lost nationally. That would slow down the whole mail system. It would slow the way you pay your bills and have an impact on everybody.”

Carrier Brian Johnson, who lives in Port St. Lucie and delivers in St. Lucie West, said he can’t afford to be jobless. “It seems that the first cut is the drastic cut,” Johnson said. “This is my means right here. My wife has opened her own business, but the majority is taken care of from my income. I have kids in college and things are getting crazy with prices.” Other sectors that will suffer greatly from the cut are veterans and seniors, said six-year Army veteran Doug Scholpp, of Port St. Lucie, who works out of the Stuart office. The U.S. Postal Service is the largest civilian employer of veterans and currently employs about 130,000 former service members. “What’s most disturbing to me is we have returning veterans who are trying to feed families and pay mortgages,” said Scholpp, who has been delivering mail for 31 years. “The job market is bad enough. This would block the labor opportunities for our returning veterans.” Scholpp said the ripple effects will be widespread. “Seniors are expecting their medications and letters from the grandkids on a daily basis,” he said. “People are expecting their Netflix on a daily basis. This is vital. So many people don’t have computers or smartphones.”

cycle crash as a New York City police officer in 2007. Winchell’s rehab therapist put him on a hand cycle while he was still confined in a chest cast. And the rest is history. “I took off like a bandit, because I was a motorcycle guy.” Since then, Winchell has completed 20 similar races. He said Achilles has been a Godsend. “It’s the comradery of the cyclists and getting people back out there,” Winchell said as he caught his breath. “We’re the wheelchair family.” “It’s not how you get knocked down,” he said. “It’s how you get back up again.” Jimmy Crews, 22, placed second with a time of 47:28.710. The Pembroke Pines resident overcame slim odds to make a recovery from a 2008 car accident that left him hospitalized for three months. Crews’ mother, Patricia, said doctors didn’t think her son would walk again. “When he got out (of the hospital) he was in a wheelchair and hardly speaking,” she said. “You could see what he’s doing now. He uses a cane and is doing really well. He’s an inspiration to everybody. He’s one of God’s angels.” Crews trained intensely for the race and offered words of encouragement to other trauma patients. “I bike ride once or twice a week and go to the gym at least five days a week,” said Crews, who congratulated fellow riders as they crossed the finish line. “I tell everyone never give up. If you put your mind to it, anything is possible.” Volunteers Stacey and Roy Griffith of St. Lucie West said helping Achilles is a rewarding experience. “It’s something that makes us so happy to give back.” Marine Vietnam veteran Cletis

Mays, 62, of Sunrise, lost his legs in combat. He finished in 56:58.090. “Feel better about yourself, get up and get going,” Mays said. Fellow veterans, Michael Fidler, 46, and Fabiola Munoz, 37, both of Miami, finished 01:13:35.753 and 00:52:46.420 respectively. Fidler, a Gulf War Army veteran who suffers from multiple sclerosis, said listening to reggae artist Bob Marley helped fuel him through the race. “It’s really fun to get out and get that feeling again of competition,” he said with an infectious smile. Munoz, a Navy veteran who became a paraplegic after a “freak accident” while in the service, said time heals all wounds. “I went to a dark place. It was hard. It took a lot of years to figure my body out again and see what I could do,” Munoz said. “Give it time, it gets better. I promise.” Paralympic medal winner for wheelchair tennis, Karin Korb, 45, of Fort Lauderdale joined in December. She finished in 52:03.063. A broken back during gymnastics training almost 30 years ago left Korb paralyzed from the waist down, but that hasn’t halted the athlete’s drive. Korb said taking the first step out of the house is a “huge accomplishment” for anyone suffering with a disability, large or small. “And the other thing is we have discernible disabilities. MORALES from page 3 Brian Morales said his family expected a different plea. “The only thing that got us upset and that got us disgusted was that he pleaded not guilty and I believe he mentioned something about self-defense,” Brian Morales said as Gary’s daughters Brooklynn, 8, and Jordan, 6, played close by. “It disgusted us because he shot and killed my brother when he was sitting in the seat in his car and his gun was holstered, so why would you do that?” “He did a cowardly act and we figured this time he could be a man and face what he did, but

he went ahead and did another cowardly act…” Morales’s brother, Ken Morales, 39, of Port St. Lucie echoed the same sentiment. “That’s a cowardly plea,” Ken Morales said. “I mean, there is so much evidence, so many witnesses that point him. You did what you did, man up about it.” Mascara said the community’s extraordinary efforts to comfort the Morales family will make the road to recovery bearable. “It has been overwhelming. The level of support is unbelievable, not only for the Morales family, but for the Sheriff’s Office,” Mascara said. “We live in a great community, that’s what makes

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com

this community so special.” A few days ago Ken Morales said he was moved by a stranger on the street. “Just the other day somebody saw the sticker I had in the back (of my car) in memory of my brother – a motorcycle guy – and he pulled over and he gave me his condolences,” Ken Morales said. “He came and put his kickstand on and shook my hand while we were waiting at the traffic light.” During the March 30 beach event, Rep. Patrick Murphy’s constituent services representative, Candace Walls, presented Gary Morales’s widow, Holly, with a folded American flag that once flew over Capitol Hill in memory

and honor of the fallen hero. Holly Morales accepted the gift with tears in her eyes. “I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to you and your family for the loss of your father and your husband,” Murphy said in a statement read by Walls. “Too many of us take for granted safety and security of our communities, but it is only because of brave individuals like your father and your husband that we can enjoy our families, schools, streets and towns each and every day,” Walls read. “Although we can never properly repay his ultimate sacrifice, with the dedication of this flag, we salute his service and his courage.”

PRIDEFEST from page 1 in recent weeks add to the event’s significance. He also announced he and his partner of six and a half years, Tim, would wed the next day. “The day after PrideFest, I’m going to be flying back to Iowa …” said Pfister of the state where he and his partner met while in college. “We’ll be going to the courthouse to make our union legal.” Only nine states recognize samesex marriage rights. Iowa is one of them. Florida, however, will not recognize Pfister’s union. Pfister, who believes legal samesex unions will only enhance the country by promoting tolerance and equal rights for all citizens, said the day is way overdue. “If we were able to have the same marriage rights as the rest of society, we would have already been up there,” he said. “A typical courtship doesn’t last six or seven years. The government should not have any say in marriage in the first place.” Late last month, the highest court’s nine justices reviewed the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which denies married same-sex couples access to federal benefits by defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman. The court also reviewed California’s Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage in the state. Mindi Fetterman, president of the St. Lucie West-based Treasure Coast Chapter of the National Organization for Women, said in addition to women’s rights, the organization advocates for race and gay and lesbian rights. “The founding principle of NOW

and the entire feminist movement is equality,” said Fetterman, who will have a booth at PrideFest. “Support for marriage equality is one more step forward in creating a world where each of us, regardless of whom we love or how we live our lives, is treated equally in the eyes of the law.” Pfister who doesn’t believe the court will find the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, recalled earlier years when he struggled with his identity. “I always knew there was something different,” the Port St. Lucie resident said. “I just couldn’t put my finger on it.” “It wasn’t until I was in college that I had a girlfriend … and I figured things out,” Pfister said. “She was a psych major, so she helped me figure it out.” While reflecting back on his own struggles, Pfister offered words of advice to youths grappling with their sexuality. “I almost feel like I’m one of the old guys. I know the history and the struggle,” Pfister said. “Don’t be afraid to be who you are. If people disagree, life goes on. Tomorrow is a new day. It does get better.” The 9th annual PrideFest is on Sunday, April 7 in the Village Square of the Port St. Lucie Civic Center from noon until 9 p.m. Guests include Roxxxy Andrews from LOGO’s hit show “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Port St. Lucie vice mayor Linda Bartz, DJ Joshua Atom, live band Category 5 & the Storm Horns and more. FORT PIERCE — There was pride and there were tears in equal measure as the National Navy SEAL Museum hosted the presentation of hand-carved canes to 14 distinguished veterans. The March 22 ceremony paid tribute to survivors of WWII, Korea, Vietnam and more recent conflicts. The canes were the work of the Indian River Woodcarvers. Lloyd Lasenby, representing the organization, presented the canes to each veteran with a word about his accomplishments. Each cane contained a representation of the medals awarded to each recipient and was topped by a carved eagle. One of the honorees, Rudy Warshawsky, of Delray Beach, is believed to be the only surviving member of Company E, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne, known as “Easy Company” and immor-

talized in the HBO miniseries “Band of Brothers.” Warshawsky saw action in Normandy and Korea. His spine was shattered and he sits in a wheelchair. Everyone came to pay their respects. When asked if he had seen the series based on Easy Company’s experiences, he shook his head. “I didn’t see the movie, I could write it,” he said. Tara Baldwin, sister of Aaron Vaughn, a member of Navy SEAL Team 6, who died when the helicopter in which he was riding was shot down over Afghanistan, accepted the cane on her brother’s behalf. She said that Camp 300, the camp for boys who have lost fathers while on active duty, will have its first session April 12-14 with nine campers. The camp is a way of celebrating the life of Aaron Vaughn as well as helping kids who’ve lost their dads. St. Lucie County commissioners

The “Kids Fishing Tournament,” sponsored by both groups, was organized to provide an educational and fun day for youngsters up to 16 years of age. The day will begin with registration of participants at 8:30 a.m. followed by a Safety Clinic showing the proper techniques for participants to rig and cast their lines, bait hooks safely, removing their catch and return the fish to the pond. This will be followed by the opportunity to fish in a tournament setting in the recently stocked Botanical Gardens pond. The awards ceremony will be held at noon. If last year’s tournament is any indication, upwards of 150 kids and volunteers will be expected to enjoy the day. The Club is currently busy in stocking the Botanical Gardens Pond. With the stocking efforts last year, the first fish was caught seconds after the start of the tournament and most participants caught a fish before the day ended. The PSL Angler’s Club is supplying all bait and prizes will be awarded in three categories for first, biggest and most fish caught by kids under 11 years of age and kids 12 to 16 years of age. In addition, each angler will be entered into a drawing for a rod and reel door prize.

The Botanical Gardens will grant free admission to all participants and their families who wish to tour the grounds that are just starting to show their springtime foliage. The Port St. Lucie Angler’s Club was first organized in 1960 and is still going strong. The Club offers teaching clinics throughout the year at its meetings and coordinates members who need partners for fishing outings. Group events such as fishing expeditions on local charter boats are also arranged. Each month a different topic relating to fishing is presented, usually by professional fishermen or guides both local and out of town. In addition the members organize monthly Club-fishing tournaments. Membership is open to all regardless of fishing experience. Those wishing to join the club, adults, youngsters, as well as entire families are welcome to attend the meetings. Club meeting are held on the second Thursday of each month at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens beginning at 7 p.m. The Club is excited about its partnership with the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens and is thankful for their cooperation and assistance in jointly hosting this event. For Your Voice News & Views ST. LUCIE COUNTY — There will be fun for the entire family at the 2nd Annual Fort Pierce Oyster Festival. This festival takes place along the Riverwalk in downtown Fort Pierce, on Saturday, April 6. Festival goers will be able to enjoy delicious oysters, and contribute to a better ecosystem as shells will be gathered for oyster reef restoration projects. This family-friendly festival will feature music, arts and crafts, marine eco exhibits, a wide variety of food and more. “We are very pleased to present the 2nd Annual,” says Andy Brady, President of Sea-Life Habitat Improvement Project Inc. and the event benefactor. “Our inaugural event this past April far exceeded our expectations with more than 6,500 people coming out to support the oyster reef restoration projects and to celebrate our most precious asset, the Indian River Lagoon.” “The 2nd Annual promises

to be bigger, better and have a much larger variety of oyster dishes,” Brady said. “We received great reviews on the inaugural event from the community, but the one thing that everyone craved was more oyster dishes. So, although we shucked and served more than 10,000 oysters on the half shell, this year we will be serving grilled oysters at the Fort Pierce Yacht Club. Oysters Provencal, Oysters Mexicali and oysters on the half shell will be served at two separate locations on the festival grounds. In addition, we have area restaurants serving a variety of food, so there will be something for everybody.” The Manatee Observation & Education Center is a partner in the festival and will be hosting fun things to do for the kids. There will be face painting, mural painting, Life in the Lagoon stamping activity, appearances by Moe the Manatee and free admission to the Manatee Center from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. the day of

Folk/rock duo at Sunrise By Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@yourvoiceweekly.com

FORT PIERCE — When Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman of Aztec Two-Step come to the Black Box Theatre at the Sunrise on April 19, it will be Fowler’s second appearance this season. He appeared earlier with his group, the Nutopians, a band celebrating the life of John Lennon. Now Fowler returns to his musical roots as he and Shulman, whom he met at a coffee house in Boston in 1971, come to town to perform the music of Simon &

Garfunkel, the Everly Brothers and, of course, Aztec Two-Step. The group takes its name from Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s work that begins: See It was like this when We waltz into this place. A couple of papish cats is doing an Aztec two-step. In a telephone interview, Neal Shulman talked about the duo’s longevity and that name. “I have to say Rex suggested it,”

AZTEC from page 22 he said. “I liked Ferlinghetti, too. I always saw Ferlinghetti’s books. I worked in a bookstore and sold a lot of Ferlinghetti.” Shulman grew up in Manhattan. “It was very odd,” he said. “You’re growing up and you become mobile early on (because of the subway.) It’s kind of a weird thing. I tell people I’m from a little island off the coast of the United States.” His upbringing was the opposite of Fowler’s, who grew up in rural Maine. “It couldn’t have been more different from Rex,” he said. “He came from a town with one stop light.” Shulman wanted to be a drummer, but found that carrying drums around Manhattan was difficult. There were also few places to practice. “It was brutal to find a place to rehearse,” he said. “We lived in a third-floor walk-up. There was no garage, so no garage band.” Shulman began playing the guitar and bought himself a book of songs. He loved the music of the folk revival going on in the 1960s, with Peter, Paul and Mary and The Weavers. He began college in Boston, where Fowler was trying to play some

of the songs he’d written. “I was there ostensibly to go to music school, but I was trying to play music and meet girls,” Schulman said. “I didn’t go to school very often. We met at a coffee house on open mic night. We both had the idea of saying, ‘Let’s see if we can do something other than as a solo artist.’” For most of their career, the group played songs they’d written, including their signature song, “The Persecution and Restoration of Dean Moriarty.” Subtitled “On the Road,” it was a nod to another Beat idol, Jack Kerouac. “We didn’t know it would be a signature song for us,” Shulman said. “We’re happy to be connected that way to the Beats. We were long-haired hippies.” On March 15, the two recollected the day they met and started Aztec Two-Step 42 years ago. “It was unspoken that we would play original music,” Shulman said. “It was not until five years ago, that we took the time to play Simon & Garfunkel songs, as well. We always dropped in an Everly Brothers tune. They sort of defined duet singing. They’re the well-spring. I never connected with the up-tempo songs, but the ballads, like ‘Dream,’ connected to

By and large, I’m playing on weekends and she’s used to going to the movies on Saturday by herself or with a friend.” Still, Shulman is not looking to retire. “If you’re a creative person, you always have things you’re working on,” he said. “We all have irons in the fires. Recently we’ve played a bunch of shows, It’s still fun. It really is.” Aztec Two-Step performs at the Sunrise Theatre’s Black Box Theatre, 117 S.
