Both women were just two of a crowd that numbered more than 100. One hundred similar protests took place across the country that Sunday.

LUCIE WEST — As millions of gays and lesbians across the country wait for the Supreme Court’s ruling in June on same-sex marriage, one local nonprofit group that aims to promote equality is organizing its annual gay pride festival. Cory Pfister, 31, president of Pride of the Treasure Coast, said this year’s PrideFest, held at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center on April 7, carries a little more weight than the eight that preceded it. ST. LUCIE WEST — On a clear, sunny Friday morning, Jonathan Hanson walked into Tradition Field with a bittersweet feeling in his heart. Although he was ecstatic about seeing his favorite ballclub, Hanson understood he would have to wait another 11 months to see the New York Mets in action in his backyard. The lifelong Mets fan and St. Lucie West resident watched from the bleachers on the right field line as his team took the field for the final time at home during the 2013 spring training season.
