Anticipation and excitement from players and fans alike was dampened for a moment as heavy rain showers ripped through the Treasure Coast, causing a lengthy delay at start the night. At the 6:30 p.m. scheduled start, a tarp covering the infield remained on the field.

Prosecutors say evidence paints picture of Morales murder By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

nrodriguez@yourvoiceweekly.com

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — “And so he’s taking off on me.” Those are among the last words Sgt. Gary Morales, 35, said to dispatchers minutes before he was gunned down in broad daylight during a traffic stop in the southern outskirts of Fort Pierce the morning of Feb. 28. The sheriff’s sergeant radioed in the stop and pursuit on a maroon, late-model Toyota Corolla near Oleander Avenue at 9:28 a.m. According to dispatch chatter, 1:57 later, shots were fired on Naylor Terrace. Morales, who was seated in his patrol cruiser, gun still holstered, was fatally wounded. He was shot in the side of the head, neck and arm. The chatter from that fateful day was just one piece of a slew of evidence released last week by prosecutors in the death penalty, first-degree murder case against Eriese Tisdale, 25, the Fort Pierce man authorities say pulled the trigger.

Tisdale interrogation

In interrogation footage from the state attorney’s office, Tisdale explained why he unleashed a string of bullets at point-blank range on the sheriff’s deputy, who according to police reports, had no time to react. Tisdale fired four rounds, investigative reports state. During questioning, which lasted just over an hour, Tisdale said he realized life as he knew it was over. “Right now my present life is gone … I’m aware of the road ahead of me,” he said. After insisting to know what he’d be charged with, Chief Assistant State Attorney Tom Bakkedahl told Tisdale he’d be charged with murder. A stoic Tisdale looked down for a second and proceeded

to answer questions. Evidence photos made public last week show the bloodied interior of Morales’s Sgt. Gary Morales cruiser as well as a blood-soaked uniform and undergarments. There was no evidence of a dash cam in Morales’s patrol car. In Tisdale’s version of events, he said he was going to a nearby store to pick up a soda for his pregnant girlfriend, who lived a block away. Tisdale, who said he never made it into the store, said Morales tried to pull him over. After taking off briefly, then stopping, Tisdale said Morales exited his patrol car and ordered Tisdale out of his car. “The officer came and like almost cut me off with the lights, rammed, kind of rammed me to stop me or whatever and I just didn’t stop,” Tisdale said. During the interview, lead Detective Ronald Wentz asked Tisdale if he knew why he was being stopped. Tisdale, whose driver’s license was suspended, didn’t have an answer, but did say the stop could have been racially motivated. Tisdale, a convicted felon stemming from a 2010 drug charge, had a gun in the car. “Maybe because of the dreads, black guy in the neighborhood, maybe he didn’t have any kind of nothing he can look forward – maybe he didn’t have any, nowhere to be,” said Tisdale, who added he was wearing a seatbelt with his driver’s side window down. “Maybe he thought I was suspicious. I don’t know, but I

MAYOR from page 1 School’s Principal Kim Stephanic with the Golden Apple award for the school’s “A” grade in the Florida Department of Education’s School Accountability Reports for 2012. Faiella praised teachers and students for their hard work. “Centennial always has a part of my heart because two of my kids graduated from the school. I’ll never forget the hard work even in the past,” Faiella said. “I’d like to thank faculty members, every teacher, students and administration for bringing us here to where we are at today, an ‘A’ school.” “Without your hard work and dedication, we wouldn’t be here today. We’ll never forget that. And yes, you guys need to be recognized for it. We recognize so many people in the city, but our teachers kind of lag behind,” Faiella said. “I’m here to make sure that doesn’t happen. Teachers are our No. 1 priority, because without them, our kids would be nowhere and that’s where our economic development stems from.” Stephanic was overjoyed by the honor and divulged the secret formula to having a top-rated school: getting kids college-ready. “It’s having a very clearly defined vision and a mission ...,” Stephanic said. “Everything we do becomes aligned in that mission.”

The award recognized the school’s “A” rating. Math teacher, Carol Rondeau (right) proudly cradles the award. Math teacher Carol Rondeau held the award high with a smile from ear to ear. “This is exciting, this is wonderful,” she said. “Everybody’s worked very, very hard. We love our students and our students have been fantastic. So, this is an accomplishment that has taken

many years.” “I think it’s a combination of everything,” Rondeau said. “It’s the students, it’s the teachers, it’s the administration, it’s the principal, it’s the maintenance people. Everybody truly works together as a family.”

Three areas to examine in gun control discussions I

The mental health system, which addresses the great experiment that the psychiatric profession introduced in the 1970s, is today a great failure. This I personally experienced as an educator being involved with Special Education programs. Forty years ago the thinking of most psychiatrists were that the large psychiatric state hospitals wer extremely expensive and were not effective in treating the mentally afflicted individuals. They recommended and implemented the placing of mentally

Domenick Scarlata ill individuals in private homes throughout the communities. This they believed would be more therapeutic for the patients, as they would be among normal people. Also the closing of these large mental institutions would be cost-effective. Unfortunately, this experiment failed as these mentally ill individuals had no proper supervision; consequently, they wandered off. This happened nationwide and it brought about the present homeless problem. Now we have a large homeless popu-

had previously written, which was published on March 1 in Your Voice News & Views, an editorial entitled, “Is The Gun The Problem?” In this article I alluded to the fact that gun control alone is not the primary issue to control violence. The real issue is multifaceted. It is the criminal justice system, mental health and the entertainment media. I wish to address each item in detail and hope to show their importance in controlling violence in our society.

The mental health system

lation where a large percentage have mental problems and nowhere to receive treatment. Also the ACLU’s zeal to protect the individual rights helps keep the homeless people on the streets. The primary goal should be to re-institute the psychiatricstate hospitals where the mentally ill, especially the severe cases, can be housed, supervised and treated. This would solve thehomeless problem and also provide a data bank for the United States government to have an effective background check whether for gun purchasers or other dangerous endeavors. We can influence these changes by contacting our legislative representatives, state and federal, and the news media.

Criminal Justice System The criminal justice system has by pure economics and self-interest of certain government employees is becoming an inefficient, stagnant and overloaded system. Our liberal society with drugs, crime, etc., is at an all-time high and is being soft on criminals. The economics of not building more jails, but yet having jails which district attorneys who always plea bargain their cases to make their record look good, and the liberal judges who are soft on sentencing criminals both help to frustrate the criminal system itself. We can debate this issue for days, but the pure fact is that to control the instrument, such as a gun, is not the issue: to control the individual is the primary goal. The solution is that we must address the problem of prison overcrowding and not being too liberal with the prison’s operation. Yes, we can build more prisons, but build them in areas where you need minimum security such as deserts, islands, etc. Operate the prisons more efficiently and with fair treatment and not with liberal philosophy. Take a page from Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona and we would learn something. Another point is to put pressure

on the District Attorney to limit the use of plea bargaining and make them work to get effective convictions. Put pressure to appoint judges who will follow the law to the letter when giving a sentence to a convicted criminal. We can do this by contacting our legislative representatives, stateand federal, and the news media.

Entertainment Media To convince the entertainment media to self-regulate the extreme violence that permeates throughout movies, television and games should be one of our major goals. Through the years, more and more bloodshed and gory images have been displayed on the screen. Each producer tries to outdo the other by creating more and more horrible images. It is well-known that our young children spend an enormous amount time in front of the television, and especially with the video games. Every psychiatrist and psychologist tells us that the constant exposure to this senseless violence can and does desensitize our young to human suffering. More important, the mentally ill individual can be influenced by this constant exposure to become a copy-cat. We know that we have a First Amendment of freedom of speech and expression, but in all good conscience the entertainment media, Hollywood, television, games, books, etc., and its writers and producers should be approached and be convinced to self-sensor their writing and productions. It is not too much to ask to help to keep our society safe. Domenick Scarlato served in the U.S. Navy on active duty from 1944-48 and later in the Naval Reserve and National Guard. He holds a doctorate of education and because of his work in special education, has been involved in an advisory capacity while changes to national mental health care policies occurred over the last 50 years. He has been a St. Lucie West resident for 14 years.

seen lights.” Tisdale said the shooting was self-defense. “I just, ‘cause I was in fear of my life, you know what I mean, and I wanted to make – be able to breathe another day or just be able to not be put in a position of, like, be at the disposal of another human being …” Tisdale described Morales’s approach as “abrasive” and “aggressive.” At one point Bakkedahl questioned Tisdale’s defense, saying “You’ve got to come up with something better. Tell me you were stoned out of your mind. Tell me you were hearing voices. That’s going to fly a heck of a lot better than ‘I was acting in self-defense.” Tisdale said the only voice he heard was Morales’s. “Voices, yeah, the voices was telling me – the voices was coming from him (Sgt. Morales),” Tisdale said. “And in his voice was either ‘You’re going to do what the hell I say or I’m gonna kill you, I’m going to hurt you…’” Bakkedahl probed Tisdale further, telling him eye witnesses watched the crime happen. “Tell us how you were in fear of your life the moment you approached the window of his car and executed him,” he said.

“It probably is not gonna, it’s not gonna help me anyway,” Tisdale said. Tisdale was indicted last month on a first-degree murder charge. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. Tisdale is being held without bond in a Martin County jail. Tisdale’s attorney, Mark Harllee, said he has already filed a written plea of not guilty and his client will not be required to appear at his April 19 arraignment. Harllee said it will be a while until a jury hears the case. “Typically in a case of this high profile nature and when the state is seeking the death penalty, it (takes) about two years,” Harrlee said.

er’s side door seconds before the shooting. “And then he (Tisdale) backs up a little bit and then he goes and he puts three more in him (Morales.) If not four. It was so quick. So many shots.” Backup Deputy Clarence Bennett witnessed the execution, according to the reports. Bennett said he arrived in time to see Tisdale at Morales’s driver’s side door, arm extended with a black gun in his hand. The deputy said Tisdale fired at Morales and then turned the .45 caliber handgun toward him. According to Tisdale’s arrest affidavit, Bennett fired five rounds at Tisdale, who then fled.

Tisdale’s family

During a police interview the day of the slaying, Tisdale’s then eight-month pregnant girlfriend, Jessica Maldonado, 20, who has since given birth to the couple’s first child, acknowledged her boyfriend, an aspiring rapper who goes by the name “Prince Guru,” owned a black gun he kept in the glove box of the car. Maldonado said Tisdale wasn’t violent, didn’t drink alcohol and smoked marijuana a few times a week. The last time Tisdale smoked was two days before the shooting, she said. She described Tisdale, as “self-centered” and “selfish” when

Eyewitness accounts

According to investigative reports, a Naylor Terrace resident mowing his lawn witnessed the shooting. The witness said he saw a man with dreadlocked hair in a red car being followed by Morales’s flashing car, the report states. The witness said the driver of the red car abruptly hit his brakes, briefly reversed and jumped out of his car. Morales “didn’t have a chance,” the witness said. “This guy (Tisdale) jumps out of his car and hits (shoots) him (Morales) one time, (all right). Now the (cop) ... he can’t even get out,” said the witness, who said he watched Morales open his driv-

Veteran spurs interest in entrepreneurship By Shelley Koppel Staff writer

VERO BEACH — Steve Olds grew up outside of Washington, D.C., the son of a career FBI agent. He entered ROTC at the University of Maryland, where he majored in math, with a business minor. After graduating, he was commissioned in the Air Force and sent to flight school. Olds spent seven years in the Air Force, and was part of the first group that went in during Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Olds is proud of his service, but he has always had another dream, as well. “Since I was 16, I knew I would be a business owner,” he said. Even while he was in the Air Force, he was looking into real estate and marketing careers. “On the flight from Virginia to Saudi Arabia, I threw in a bag of real estate books to study in the desert,” he said. “I found out on the way to Saudi Arabia that I passed my real estate exam.” When he left the Air Force in 1993, Olds and his family moved to Vero Beach and he became a

consultant, helping companies market products, execute marketing plans and build sales teams. “I consulted from the outside and the inside,” Olds said. “I learned a lot about entrepreneurship and turning intellectual property into marketable products,” he said. “In the early 2000s, I began helping people sell through the Internet to reach new markets.” In January 2011, Olds was finishing up a consulting project and considering what came next. He heard on the radio that it was the 20th anniversary of Desert Storm. He had a flashback about being in a tough spot. “Fast-forward 20 years,” Old said. “I’m in another difficult position. Do I sit back and let America be destroyed from the inside out, financially and with debt? We can’t sit back and give our kids this mess we’ve created. A voice said, ‘What are you going to do about it?’ I worked and thought and prayed about it.” The result is Patriot Mission, a for-profit corporation designed to rebuild America by rekindling an interest in entrepreneurship and small business ownership. One of its programs is the Made in America Project. In the first phase of the project,

12 entrepreneurs in a county will tell their stories. They will be profiled in a book that will highlight the business owners and Steve Olds challenges they face. The books will offer information on community economic development resources available to entrepreneurs. “There is a ton of resources available to help people who want to start companies,” Old said. “Most of the people who start companies are technicians who know how to do something well. “A lot of small business people know how to cook and so they open a restaurant. They don’t know the elements of business. I thought I knew things and I was clueless. There’s a lot more to owning a doughnut shop than making doughnuts.” Olds found that many business

In keeping with its mission to improve family life and prevent child abuse while teaching parents to nurture and discipline their children safely, CASTLE has managed to touch thousands, Robertson said. He credits a generous community on the Treasure Coast for making its services possible. Last year the race garnered $40,000. This year Robertson hopes to raise $75,000. “We serve over 10,000 individuals a year in four counties,” he said. “Without fundraising opportunities, we’d miss out on helping some of these families.” Robertson said the family-friendly venue is perfect for young and old alike and will include food, music and games, while allowing participants the choice to run or walk. “Tradition Field is where the big guys, the big Mets played,” said Robertson, who added children

owners don’t know where to go for help. “Every county has great organizations with great resources,” he said. “There are state colleges, SCORE (a non-profit organization that helps new businesses,) the chambers of commerce. Business people don’t know what’s available. We need to connect the dots.” The Made in the USA Project was developed after two years of planning. The first three counties chosen, Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River, are part of a seven-year game plan. Steve Erlanger, president and publisher of Your Voice News & Views, will be featured in the Martin and St. Lucie county editions because of his experiences in the newspaper industry. “I’ve watched what he’s done and what was going on with Your Voice News & Views,” Olds said. “It’s exactly what we’re after, sharing a message that’s relevant to the local community. “Entrepreneurial leaders like Steve have been there and done and have the battle scars to prove it,” he said. “(These) business leaders don’t have the time to capture a cross-section of stories and share them and tell them in a fun way.” Steve Erlanger is pleased to have

been asked to participate in the project. “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to work with The Made in the USA project, sharing what I have learned as an entrepreneur over the past 35 years,” he said. “Small businesses are the backbone of this country, and I am happy to help any endeavor that helps make success a reality for other entrepreneurs and small business owners.” Telling the stories of entrepreneurs is the first part of the project. “The book is the seed we use to launch the story of how entrepreneurs are rebuilding America,” Olds said. “The stories are told in the context of the bigger mission. We’ll connect counties, regions, states and have a national impact, telling the free enterprise story. “The book launch is the beginning of the process. After we launch the books, every month for the next year, there will be leadership events, focusing on one entrepreneur, what they do, and what they’ve learned with respect to leadership. Between events, there will be microbusiness incubators, which are small groups, working together, to learn from the experience of others.” Olds hopes that established

PORT ST. LUCIE — A simple truck swap in 1988 gave birth to what owner John Pankraz said has become one of the Treasure Coast’s most trusted names in electricity and air conditioning. Pankraz, founder of Elite Electric & Air in Port St. Lucie, said his hunger to serve his community and achieve success spurred him to start the now-thriving business out of his home more than two decades ago. “I didn’t have a truck and (my wife) did. I was just starting the business, so I took over her truck and she took my car,” Pankraz said. “It was a lot of work because I basically started with one week’s paycheck and the tools that I had. I was able to establish some credit and started building.” The Fort Pierce Central High School graduate has resided in Port St. Lucie since the age of 8. During his days as a student at the school, Pankraz said he realized his talent. “When I was a kid, my mom had some work done by a repair man doing some electrical work at the house. I watched him and stared at him,” Pankraz said. “From that point on, my mom said I used to tear apart anything electric.” Pankraz said he got his start as a teen working as an electrician at a company owned by a childhood friend’s father. “I started there. I worked for him after school throughout the year.” Pankraz said he always knew his

business would be called “Elite.” “In high school, I used to dream about owning my own company,” Pankraz said. “I used to draw the word ‘Elite’ just the way it’s named today. It’s about being good and proper and doing things right in the elite fashion.” Elite Electric & Air offers receptacle change-outs, upgrades, service and repairs for flickering lights and much more. The company began offering air conditioning services in 2009, which includes service and repairs of new systems on new homes and installation of new systems in existing homes and small businesses. Pankraz said his goal is to “make sure people breathe clean air.” Another goal of Pankraz is to make the Earth healthier with green energy. “If everybody did a little part with just changing their light bulbs to fluorescent or LED bulbs, it would make a smaller footprint,” Pankraz said. “The new air conditioning systems are certainly high, high efficiency. It also saves you money. It’s a win, win. It helps prevent global warming.” Pankraz employs 11 people, who service north Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties. Employees include his daughter and wife, Jackie, who recently started a new call center, Three Strands, in Elite’s plaza with two friends. The center fields customer service calls for vari-

Each employee receives inhouse training once a week as well as training classes by outside vendors, Pankraz said. “We try to teach our guys to take care of the customer and make sure they are 100 percent happy,” he said. “We take care of the customer as they were family and treat them how we would want to be treated.” A shining moment of superior customer service that put Pankraz’s motto to the test was when hurricanes Frances and Jeanne blew through the area leaving a trail of destruction. Water damage extinguished circuit boxes and circuits in homes, while fallen trees pulled electrical fix-

Five hours of golf to benefit Dogs and Cats Forever For Your Voice News & Views ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Dogs and Cats Forever, a no-kill animal rescue shelter, will hold a charity golf tournament on April 20 at St. James Golf Club. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $75 per person or $280 for a “fore” some. Lunch will be

served following the tournament and prizes will be awarded for the top three groups. In addition there will be raffle baskets, a 50/50 drawing and a silent auction. Dogs and Cats Forever is a nonprofit organization that is totally dependent on volunteers and donations. There is no money from any governmental agencies

and no animal is ever euthanized unless they are terminally ill and suffering. Laura Linscott organized the shelter in 1988 on Carlton Road in Fort Pierce. Johanna (Jay) Apicella has been the president for the last 15 years, and in addition to the time she donates as a volunteer, has donated the dogs’ swimming pool that was

added to their new shelter built two years ago on 4600 Selvitz Road in Fort Pierce. The proceeds will go to the care, shelter and feeding of the animals. Please contact event host Mary Ann Russell at (954) 830-8368 to reserve a spot at this upcoming event.

PGA tasks expert with keeping award-winning course up to par nrodriguez@yourvoiceweekly.com

PGA VILLAGE — Since the moment a young Dick Gray, now 69, stepped foot onto the fairway in his home state of Indiana decades ago, he knew what his life’s work would be. That instant was the catalyst of a storied 25-year career in the golf industry which landed him a top position in the PGA of America’s esteemed staff hierarchy. Just last month, The PGA of America named Gray, who previously served at several top golf facilities across south Florida, as the new superintendent of PGA Village and the nearby PGA Country Club. Gray will oversee the grounds and maintenance of three courses designed by renowned Tom Fazio and Pete Dye at PGA Golf Club, the 35-acre PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance golf instruction, practice, technology and fitness park and the private 18-hole PGA Country Club, designed by Jim

and George Fazio. Gray, a resident of Stuart, said he finally landed his dream job before his retirement. “This is one last ride,” Gray said. “It’s the icing on the cake.” Gray said nothing compares to walking the green each and every day. “When you get to come to the golf course every day, it doesn’t get any better than this,” Gray said. “I’m tickled to death to be here.” Before joining PGA, Gray spent four years with Pathway Biologic in Plant City, where he performed sales, marketing, product development and national distribution for the company that applies advanced science to enhance the health of soil, water and plants. Gray also served for two years as general manager at The Florida Club, which was preceded by his terms at Jupiter Hills and Sailfish Point. He began his career as a superintendent for seven years at Loblolly Pines, before moving into a similar role at The Florida Club. During his storied 25-year ca-

reer, Gray had a hand in designing and building The Florida Club in Stuart. He also worked with Pete Dye and P.B. Dye on the construction of Loblolly Pines in Hobe Sound and was involved in regrassing projects as superintendent at Jupiter Hills Club in Tequesta and Sailfish Point Golf Club in Stuart. While at Jupiter Hills, the Club was ranked among Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Courses in the United States,” according to a PGA America press release. Gray is a graduate of Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., with a degree in botany. Gray performed graduate work with the turf management department at Purdue University and earned a Masters of Science degree in restaurant, hotel and institutional management from Texas Tech University in Lubbock. PGA President Ted Bishop praised Gray for his naturally green thumb, dedication and extensive expertise in the field. “Dick Gray is a world-class golf course superintendent,” Bishop said in a press release. “His turf grass practices are widely respected throughout the golf course industry. We are delighted he will oversee the agronomy of

Dick Gray PGA Village and the PGA Country Club, in order to provide and restore the highest quality golf experience for our members and guests.” Gray, who mans the grounds every day, said he’s become an expert on how to predict dry spells, heat waves and cold snaps. He joked that unlike “the old timers” his bunions don’t “start to bark” at him when a storm front is moving in. “I’ve got one of these iPhones and I punch into the weather gizmo,” Gray said.

METS from page 1 However, focus remained sharp while waiting to get started. “I think for both teams, what helped with the rain delay was that it was opening night,” Ellis said. “Not that they aren’t at any other of time, everyone was really focused and ready to get out there, especially after both teams put in a hard spring (training).” When the tarp was removed and the 67-minute delay ended, John Cena’s “My Time is Now” boomed through the Tradition Field sound system as the fans were able to stay dry, cheered their Mets as they jogged onto the diamond. On the third pitch of the game, Mets starting pitcher Hansel Robles allowed a leadoff homerun over the left-field wall to Issac Galloway, opening the night’s scoring. The Mets quickly responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to RBIs by Aderlin Rodriguez, Travis Taijeron and a wild pitch by Jupiter starter Justin Nicolino, plating Rodriguez from third. “I thought our response was huge,” Ellis said. “After the Galloway leadoff homer, it was important for us to put runners on and we were able to capitalize on it.” With a lead in hand, Robles settled in, collecting seven strikeouts and allowing two runs before

being removed in the fourth with an apparent lower body injury. Robles was checked and cleared by the Mets training staff. Ellis believes he will be OK. Estarlin Morel relieved Robles, sitting down five of the next six batters, collecting the victory and the game ball from the coaches. 1,221 fans were in attendance. In 2012, the Mets went 83-52, setting a club record for victories in a season. The Mets collected 49 wins in the first half of the season, a Florida State League record for wins in a half season. But the sizzling start was all for naught, as the team lost to Jupiter in the FSL South Division Championship Series. Ellis, the FSL Manager of the Year, is ready for the new year, but acknowledges last year’s disappointment remains a minor memory. “It’s a fresh start, but these guys know the history we have.” Ellis said. “They’ve eliminated us each of the last two years.” Players to watch in 2013 include T.J. Rivera, who led St. Lucie with a .306 batting average among hitters with over 100 plate appearances, right-handed pitchers Luis Mateo and Noah Syndergaard. Previously in the Blue Jays organization, Syndergaard was acquired in the off-season deal that sent 2012 Cy Young award winner R.A. Dickey to Toronto.

The Perfect Home

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer St. Lucie Mets pitcher Domingo Tapia gave up no runs in the six innngs he pitched against the Jupiter Hammerheads Friday, April 5 at Tradition Field. The Mets came away with a 1-0 victory in 10 innings of play. The St. Lucie Mets begin a six game home stand starting Monday, April 15.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Dr. Brent Harris is an outspoken advocate of literacy, so when he was asked to give free dictionaries to local students, he gave a resounding and immediate “Yes!” Dr. Harris presented more than 100 dictionaries to all the thirdgrade students at West Gate K-8 in St. Lucie West. Dr. Harris, a dentist with the local dental practice S.A.H. Dentistry, has helped with the dictionary delivery program for more than six years now. “It’s a really fun project to work on,” Harris said. “The kids love getting these free books, and knowing they are theirs to keep.

They also love the task of being given a word and having to look it up in the dictionary. I know the use of computers and other technology has limited our kids’ connection with books, but it’s amazing how much they love these dictionaries. It’s one of the highlights of my year!” The Dictionary Project is sponsored by local Rotary Clubs and Dr. Harris worked with the Port St. Lucie Sunset Rotary Club for this particular school. As part of their commitment to charities and especially children in the area, S.A.H. Dentistry sponsors several events and fundraiser throughout the year.

Henson Puppets not kid stuff By Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@yourvoiceweekly.com

FORT PIERCE — This is not your grandkid’s Henson puppets. Yes, Henson Alternative’s “Stuffed and Unstrung” features Henson Puppets, and yes, one of the co-creators is Brian Henson, founder Jim Henson’s son and chairman of The Jim Henson Company. No, this is not a show for children and it’s not brought to you by the letter A. Henson Alternatives is the Henson Company label for content intended for adult audiences. Patrick Bristow, co-creator and

host of the evening’s shenanigans said that the show is unique and a little hard to define. “If you’re expecting to see the Muppets, it’s not the Muppets,” he said. “It’s the Miskreant Puppets. It’s a variety improvisation show. All of the improv is based on audience shout-outs. I’m the host and I encourage them to do that.” The show begins with Bristow, who began his career in inprov with the well-known Groundlings, asking the audience to call out something like a place of employment. There’s a fade-out

HENSON from page 22 and then the puppets appear in the world that was suggested by the shout-out, improvising a sketch. “The cast always does something new, even if they’ve done the situation before,” he said. “They love being on the edge. When I feel the sketch is over, I give lighting a cue and it fades out to the end of the scene. Then we do another improv, a song or a vintage recreation of a Jim Henson-Frank Oz sketch. That’s why it’s a variety show.” Bristow said that because so much of the show is audience-driven, they can’t guarantee that the language and the themes will be suitable for children. That’s why they say it isn’t suitable for anyone under 18. “If someone suggests that the puppets get bikini waxes, we’ll be going below the belt,” Bristow said. “We don’t endeavor to be blue, but we reserve the right to give the audience what they want. We’re naughty. We tease the line, as did Jim Henson. “Our puppets get away with saying things that performers wouldn’t get away with. It’s a perk to be subversive. It’s an

‘innocent art form’ but you get to bring an adult sensibility.” Bristow said the audiences they attract are a cross-section. “They’re from 18 to 80,” he said. “When people say it’s an area with a lot of senior citizens, I remind them that people in their 70s and 80s were the beatniks, the early rock ’n’ rollers. They are Jim Henson’s age (if he were still alive.) We have wide appeal to college students, improv people and people who grew up with the Muppets and have a little twisted sense of humor.” Bristow said that the audience should not worry about offending the puppets or the host. “When audiences heckle, I love it,” he said. “It’s fun when it turns into a party.” Henson Alternative presents “Stuffed and Unstrung,” featuring the Miskreant Puppets, at the Sunrise Theatre, 117 S. Second St., Fort Pierce, on April 17 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $45 and $39. Call the box office at (772) 461-4775 or order online at www.sunrisetheatre.com. For more information on “Stuffed and Unstrung,” go to www. stuffedandunstrung.com. This show is for mature audiences.

Southall has a bachelor’s degree in music education from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. He also has a master’s degree and doctorate from Florida State University. He is concerned about the future of music education in the schools and passionate about the growing field of music therapy. “I believe music education is an essential part of every person’s life,” he said. “It’s a very important part of a student’s education. It’s vital that we continue to be in support of music activities in the schools. It’s important to life experience and to one’s ability to understand and appreciate beauty and art.” Southall said that studying music and performing with a group has additional benefits. “Students utilize physical and psychological skills,” he said. “They use motor skills, reading ability and processing (information.) They use math, to determine how the rhythm is counted, and aural skills, listening to themselves and others.” Performing with a group also helps develop social skills and discipline, he said. “The music ensemble environment is similar to a family, where they’re all working together for a unified product. It’s a way to develop social skills as you work cooperatively with people from other backgrounds. It’s quite wonderful.” Southall said that music has benefits, even if one does not perform.

“Music appreciation enhances life,” he said. “Music appreciation and music therapy help students understand the non-performance side of music. Behavior and thought processes can be changed or refocused.” The educator said that the profession of music therapy has expanded greatly in the past 30 years. “Music therapists work with students with behavioral issues, autism, in hospices, in hospitals, with dementia patients and in long-term care facilities, helping residents learn basic life skills. It’s a wonderful profession.” Southall noted that most of his students will not have music as their primary careers. “Many of our students are not going to be music educators,” he said. “More often, they have other majors and other professional goals. This time is to help them understand how important music is and how they should be involved in it for the rest of their lives. “When they start their professional careers, they’ll still be involved in choirs or bands. That’s the ultimate goal, to instill the value of lifelong participation. When these students have children, they will start piano lessons and the cycle starts over again.”
