TREASURE COAST — How long does it take to build an athletic program into a state power?

With how they’ve preformed during the 2013 season, for the Treasure Coast High School Girls’ Flag Football team, the hope is to reach that elite status in year No. 2.

After a successful debut season, which saw the Lady Titans come up short in the championship game of the inaugural Treasure Coast region tournament against Fort Pierce Westwood, Treasure Coast has reached the tail end of their season unblemished.

PORT ST. LUCIE — As the eye-catching Vegas-like lights on the welcome marquee of the Fabulous Golden Nugget Arcade dim for the last time, so will its owner’s lively hood. On the night that his arcade would cease to illuminate the corner of Riomar Drive and U.S. 1, Joe Davis, a PGA Village resident, stood outside of his business with tear-stained cheeks.

“I don’t know what we’re going to do,” said Davis, who added he’ll miss his senior citizen customers the most. “We have no idea.”

“The money that you’re not going to make and everything, that’s a fact, but it’s just the people,” he said. “(I’ll miss) all of them. You know. All the old people ... They have no place to go. We take care of them.”

ST. LUCIE WEST — One local and internationally acclaimed vocalist is helping heal the world through music and performing arts, one child at a time, starting right here on the Treasure Coast, where he calls home.

Palm City resident Terry Barber held an intimate fundraising dinner at fine dining Italian eatery, Tutto Fresco, last week.

There, Barber was able to spread his tune of hope to the two dozen

who attended and donated. Barber’s goal was to raise $2,000 for his charity, Artists For a Cause, a nonprofit group that aims to empower children with the use of the arts to become productive, fulfilled citizens, who will in turn make a difference in their own communities.

Barber, a classically trained singer fresh off a 50-date concert tour, officially established the nonprofit in March 2010 to honor his mother, who died from lymphoma four years earlier. Bar-

Water not causing pipe leaks, second study says

ST. LUCIE WEST — A second test to examine what is causing leaky copper pipes to spring up across St. Lucie West has determined the service district’s water isn’t to blame.

According to a March study done by Ohio-based metal experts at Metallurgical Solutions Inc., high levels of chlorine stemming from installation is the problem.

The St. Lucie West Services District paid $9,800 for the company to test seven pipe samples from The Vineyards, Lake Forest and the Cascades communities.

Chlorine may have originated from the flux used during installation of the water lines. Flux is an oxidizing agent used on copper pipes before soldering. It helps clean the pipe and allows the solder to better adhere.

Mission accomplished: 100K in a day

FORT PIERCE — As summer approaches, local food pantries that once brimmed with nonperishable items donated during the holidays are dry and in dire need.

Scott Van Duzer, Lake Charles resident and owner of Big Apple Pizza and Pasta in Fort Pierce, made it his mission last week to ensure the shelves at two local charities don’t remain bare.

During The Van Duzer Foundation’s 24-hour food drive, dubbed “One Day to Give,” the philanthropist, made momentarily famous nationally by his bearhug embrace of President Barack Obama last year, surpassed his goal of 100,000 pounds of food by 3,332.

“You never take things for granted. We have a wonderful community that truly cares about each other and together we make a tremendous difference,” Van Duzer said.

Food collected benefited the Mustard Seed Ministries in Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie. Program director Stacy Malinowski said collecting food is critical mid-year when donations are typically low.

by House Bill 155 and its companion Senate Bill 1030, which was signed into law by Gov. Rick Scott last Wednesday. It’s estimated approximately 1,000 strip mall casinos and controversial Internet cafes across the state face similar circumstances.

The law effectively shuts down the gambling establishments by deeming the slot-like computer machines that dole out gift cards as prizes illegal.

The law, which took effect immediately, comes on the heels of a three-year investigation that indicated the nonprofit Allied Veterans of the World is operating a $290 million illegal gambling business that barely benefited veterans, while executives reaped the profits. Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll, who provided public relations consulting for Allied Veterans, resigned last month after she was questioned about her ties to the Jacksonville-based organization. Carroll doesn’t face any charges.

Davis, who’s been in the adult arcade business locally for the past 10 years, said he and his 17 employees, along with scores of faithful patrons, are collateral damage. Left with a vacant building, dozens of devalued machines and impending financial hardship, the business owner said he’ll try his best to monetarily help his former employees forced to file for state unemployment benefits. Although he wouldn’t disclose the details, Davis said he and the Florida Arcade Association will fight back.

“We feel that there’s not much more we need to be doing from a utility stand point, because in essence, we’re spending the taxpayers, or the rate payers dollars on these reports.”

“Based on information collected and evaluated, the finished water being produced by the SFWMD is not considered corrosive and meets industry standards for stabilized drinking water,” the report stated.

PORT ST. LUCIE — Art Stover has been in Port St. Lucie for 35 years. When he came to the city, there wasn’t much here.

“My mom and dad came here from New Jersey,” he said. “I was working as a welder in a shipyard.

Even as a foreman, making only $8 an hour wasn’t working for me.”

He came down here to work as a plumber’s helper for $3.50 an hour. It took several years, but he eventually opened his own business.

“I worked for eight months and had my own truck,” he said. “I had to wait for four years to get my license, and I got a master plumber’s license. A friend said, ‘Jump in,’ and there I was with a pickup truck and a couple of shovels.”

The company grew, but as with so many businesses, it was affected by the downturn in the economy.

As the economy has improved, Stover has continued offering residential and commercial plumbing services for new construction and repair services for existing homes, businesses, schools and other structures. He has done work at larger installations including several Home Depots and a Wal-Mart

Supercenter.

“We do a lot of remodeling,” he said. “We’re really big on service.

That means repairs and replacing water heaters, faucets, toilets, and drain cleaning. We have our own machines.”

Stover said that water conservation has become a big issue with customers. Old toilet flush tanks used to hold 3½ gallons, and the first smaller, water-conserving tanks were 1.6 gallons.

“They didn’t flush properly,” Stover said. “Once they got it right at 1.28 gallons, they’re better than the old toilets.”

He said that technology is better for faucets, as well, using one touch or no-touch sensors to make them work.

“Shower heads are also conserving water and working well,” he said. “They’re high-tech. We have shower heads that work off your iPod. We did a trade show and had one on display. It was a big hit and we could have sold a case.”

Stover said that hot water heaters have also become much more energy-efficient, and that while some are a substantial initial investment, there are rebates and incentives to encourage conservation. For a large family, where savings could run $60-$80 a month, units will pay for themselves in a

Plumbing contracting is Stover’s business, but he has other important things in his life, including his three adult children, a registered nurse, an attorney and a chef. He is also involved in mission trips with the First Baptist Church of Stuart.

“We made several mission trips to Haiti,” he said. “We built a church and a water cistern for a village of 30,000. We built the cistern with a pump to the medical clinic. It was pretty awesome. We finished it last month. Next year, we’re off to Brazil. Last year, we went to Kentucky.

They were hit by tornadoes and we helped rebuild churches.”

Stover also tries to give back to the local community, helping with Habitat for Humanity in Stuart.

All isn’t work for Art Stover. Off the job, he’s on the golf course or fishing. Still, his business of 30 years enables him to do all the other things he loves. Good business and good works are a good combination.

influx of families who request rent and utilities assistance because they have to feed their children, who are on the reduced lunch program during the school year, but who are on summer vacation.

Malinowski said the charity spends an estimated $70,000 annually on food for its pantry.

The summer program can run $30,000 to $40,000, depending on how many children need to be serviced.

She also said the boxes include easy-to-make items rich in nutrients, including granola bars, canned tuna and peanut butter and jelly.

This year, Mustard Seed partnered with a soup kitchen, Sarah’s Kitchen. Malinowski said she’ll give the kitchen super-sized and jumbo cans of food that can’t fit in family boxes.

One of the many reasons for their success, according to head coach Aaron Sheppard, is his girls’ willingness to get their uniforms dirty if need be, a concept that their male counterparts don’t always grasp.

“The girls just play hard,” Sheppard said, who is also a part of the Treasure Coast boys’ football coaching staff. “The results take care of themselves if you just play hard.”

“Every play, they’ll dive, lay out and give their body to try and get a flag. They’ll kill themselves to get that flag. That’s stuff that we try to preach to the boys but don’t get all the time; to give it their all, lay out and do the right things.”

At press time, the Lady Titans held an 8-0 record. Before the story went to print, Treasure Coast will have traveled to South Fork High School to play the Lady Bulldogs on April 16.

What has helped Treasure Coast reach this level of play is the team continuity from season one to season two.

“Last year our team was pretty good,” Sheppard said. “We only lost one girl from last year’s team so the girls that came back are experienced and understand the game.”

One of the girls who returned to the squad was senior Andrea Dunkley.

Dunkley, who is known by her coaches as “Ms. Funkley” for her supreme athleticism and skills, was a member of the Lady Titans’ varsity basketball team for the past three years. She was a member of the Titans dance team, but Dunkley has always loved and played football.

“Growing up, I was always around a lot of boys, so I always actually wanted to play football,” Dunkley said. “It’s unfortunate that we can’t tackle, but flag football is the next best thing.”

The event will run from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center and will include a 1.66 mile run that pays homage to Morales, who wore badge No. 166, event coordinator and Port St. Lucie Police Detective Paul Griffith said.

All proceeds will go to The Hundred Club.

“Art is a catalyst to solve problems in the community,” Barber said.

Performing arts facilitates learning in a way no other subject can, Barber added.

“Art accesses emotion in a unique way,” said Barber, who added the same musical composition can garner different emotions from various individuals.

“You could sit and listen to a piece and I’m sitting right next to you, and I’m crying and you’re elated Long lasting lessons are learned through the performing arts because of the unique bond it forges with the human soul, Barber said.

FORT PIERCE — More than 50 students, ages 9-15, will take the stage when Indian River State College’s Performing Arts Academy presents “The Little Mermaid Jr.” on April 26-27. The students come from St. Lucie, Martin and Indian River counties.

Jane Whitaker, music teacher at Fairlawn Elementary School in Port St. Lucie, is the Performing Arts Academy’s youth musical theater director. She said that the youngsters have worked extremely hard to put the show together.

MERMAID from page 22 audition seven or eight weeks ago,” she said. “There were five or six judges including actors and choreographers. Then the students rehearsed for seven weeks, four nights a week to put on the three performances.”

Whitaker said that she chose the show for several reasons.

“It’s a show I had never done,” she said. “We needed something new and a little more challenging.

I had a strong enough cast. About half of them have been with me for three or four years and the other half have never been in a production.

“The children are acting as animal characters. It’s a little more of a stretch for some. Teaching the strategy of not moving as a person is challenging, but they’re doing really well.”

The cast includes Jade Spagnuolo as Ariel; Aidan McDonnell as Sebastian; Taylor Hall as Flounder; Ally Wenger as Scuttle; Jaden Keys as King Triton; Halle Reynolds as Ursula; Terry Gardner as Prince Eric; Justin Adrian as Grimsby and Wesley Hinds as Chef Louis.

Whitaker is serving as director and choreographer. Her daughter Brooke serves as her assistant.

Adri Becker and Joe Wilson are the tech crew, responsible for sets and lighting.

“They do amazing things,” Whitaker said. “They treat these kids as if it were a college production.”

The Performing Arts Academy follows the college semester, with sessions in the fall and spring.

The cost for the seven-week session is $165, and includes costumes for the productions.

Whitaker also leads two two-week summer camp sessions at IRSC. The first, for those 8-11, will meet from June 17-28. The second, for those 9-14, runs from July 22Aug. 2. The camp is open from 8 a.m-5 p.m. and the cost is $200 for the two weeks.

“The camps are open to anyone,” Whitaker said. “At the end of the two weeks, they put on a show for family and friends. In addition to musical theater, there are other activities, including swimming.”
