TREASURE COAST — It’s the latest in a string of Indian River Lagoon victories for Sen. Joe Negron, and a big one for Representative Gayle Harrell, Stuart. “It’s a game-changer for the Treasure Coast and I’m looking forward to funding projects that make a difference,” Negron said in a telephone interview. Gov. Rick Scott recently signed House Bill 989 into law. Harrell filed the House version

of the bill. The new law, which Negron sponsored in the Senate, affects implementation of the Water and Land Conservation Constitutional Amendment voters passed in 2014. Critics have charged that the State Legislature has subverted voters’ intentions and misappropriated much of the money. The bill requires that either 25 percent, or $200 million, from real-estate transaction fees — documentary stamps or “doc stamps” — go to the Compre-

Tradition family deals with daughter’s deployment Bruno Moore
FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TRADITION — Evan Nine, Tradition resident, makes his living entertaining people on the happiest day of their lives. As a wedding entertainer, he leads first dances, helps cut the cake and announces the new couple — all of the accoutrements of the bride and groom’s big day. Meanwhile, a world away, in a place we’re not allowed to mention, his daughter, Hayley barely in her 20s, wears the uniform of a warrior, serving her country in a land many of us have probably never heard of. Her life is spent not knowing what tomorrow will bring. So is Evan’s. “You constantly worry, even if they are in a ‘safe zone’. You constantly have your phone with you because you don’t know when she will call. You realize you miss the little things when they are not here,” he explains. “Something good happens and you want to tell her and you can’t.” He says it’s a waiting game, coordinating time zones, sending emails and waiting for responses and hoping that she’s safe.
This is Hayley’s second deployment, and to punctuate just how bittersweet that is, she was just, as her father does for complete strangers every weekend, at her brother’s side for his wedding. In less than a day she’d be strapping into an airplane, en route to answer her second call of duty. Hayley, also in law enforcement, says that call to serve is part of her DNA. “Being a part of something bigger than myself is unexplainable,” she says. “In my military uniform I look down to my right shoulder and see a flag so many people have sacrificed their lives for. Without their sacrifice, I would not have the opportunity to help secure my family’s future. On a smaller scale, policing in the community is on a more intimate scale. “One on one interactions with complete strangers who open up, for some, the most stressful time in their lives, looking to you for a solution, is humbling.” Evan says Hayley, a naturally determined person, has nearly always known she would serve her community and her country. “When she was 7, she told us she was going to join the Army and one day be a police officer,”

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Port St. Lucie City Council got a glance at a proposed half-cent, countywide sales tax at a regular workshop on Monday, April 18. Howard Tipton, the county administrator, gave the council a presentation on the proposed tax. He said St. Lucie and its cities have inadequate resources to deal with increasing population, and the proposed tax is one way to help remedy the problem. “I’d like to think I’m part of a generation that deals with things today,” Tipton said. Discussion about the proposed sales tax to fund infrastructure, such as water-quality and road projects, has been around the county since last year. The county commission would have to send the tax to voters for a referendum. The earliest it can hold the first of two public hearings to do that is June 7. “That would be an opportunity for the public to weigh and share their perspective on this,” Tipton told the city council. At press time, the county commission is slated to discuss the proposed sales tax at its April 19 meeting. The council was united in favoring of sending the proposed sales tax to voters, although there was no vote on that. The council doesn’t vote at workshops. Council member Shannon Martin said that the city is already behind with infrastructure projects, and that’s only going to worsen as more move here. “As much as we play catch-up, it’s just going to get harder,” she said. Martin added, “This is something I think should be explored and put to the taxpayers to let them decide.” Council member Ron Bowen said he, too, sees the proposed sales tax as a way to catch up on need-
ed infrastructure projects. However, he said the county and cities will face a skeptical voting public. “This sales tax initiative has been on the ballot twice, and I don’t remember the time frame,” Bowen said, noting that it failed both times. Vice Mayor Linda Bartz said failure to enact a local-option infrastructure sales tax could have a lot to do with St. Lucie County being behind on road maintenance. “Possibly because (voters) did not pass it we’re sitting in the boat we’re in now,” she said. The tax, if passed in a referendum, would be on all taxable items up to $5,000. Tipton said the county commission will have to decide what the duration and how tightly restricted the funds would be. Tipton told the council that the tax would generate about $75.5 million over 10 years for the city. It would generate about $94.2 million for the county. Fort Pierce would see about $18.6 million over 10 years, and St. Lucie Village about $260,500. Due to projected population growth, the city could see about $173 million if the tax is enacted for 20 years. Mayor Greg Oravec added that if voters understand why the proposed tax is needed, they’d likely pass it easily. However, he said if voters don’t understand why it’s needed, they’ll revolt at the ballot box. He said the city and county would have to make a concerted effort to help voters understand why the tax is on their ballots. “Without communication it’ll fail,” he said. St. Lucie County now has a 6.5-cent sales tax rate. Half a cent of that goes to the schools. If the county commission sends the proposed tax to voters, and it passes in a referendum, there’d be a 7-percent sales tax on qualifying items up to $5,000. Voters in Martin County shot down a similar proposed tax in 2014 by a paper-thin margin.

Let’s Save Our St. Lucie River
T
he City of Port St. Lucie recently adopted a resolution to join with many stakeholders in calling upon Governor Rick Scott to take meaningful action to save our St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon. However, as we continue to plead to the Governor and our other representatives in Tallahassee and Washington, D.C., for the comprehensive long term solution to the problem of Lake O freshwater discharges, I have become more and more certain that we cannot wait for anyone else to save our Rivers, especially the St. Lucie. It’s going to be up to us! In fact, as much as we lament over the Lake O discharges, the reality is that our St. Lucie River has an even more pressing, and most likely locally created, problem—fecal bacteria. Yes. Fecal bacteria, often measured by the presence of enteric and fecal co-
liform, is what you think it is; and, far too often, there is so much of it in the River that the Florida Department of Health Greg Oravec issues advisories which tell us to avoid contact with the water for fear that pathogens (germs) will make us sick. When counts go over 70 colony forming units (cfu) per 100 milliliters of water, the water quality is considered “poor,” an advisory is issued, and a corresponding sign goes up on the River. As part of its job to keep us safe, the Health Department typically tests

our River for fecal bacteria on a biweekly basis, and results are available going back to August 2013. Analyzing those results can lead to heartbreak. In 31 months of reported results, we had public health advisories in 23. 2015 showed relatively better results with six months being subject to public health advisories. However, every month to date in 2016 has required an advisory. As you may recognize, this data includes periods of time outside of el Niño and Lake O discharges, showing us that we can’t just point our fingers at external boogeymen. We have a real local problem to
solve. Yet, despite all of our investments in improving the health of our River, no one can advise us with certainty, what is causing this problem. Is it septic tanks, cattle and other animal waste, leaking pipes, a marina pump out, or a combination thereof? Are we ok with this? Are we ok with continuing to tell our residents and visitors that there is so much feces in the water that they shouldn’t touch it? As a mayor and native Floridian, I am not and cannot continue to watch it happen unchallenged. Accordingly, I am proposing that we team up with Harbor Branch and our neighboring city and county governments to definitively identify the sources of fecal contamination so that we can then immediately get to the busi-

Lifting the community by preventing child abuse
C
hild abuse is a horrific, yet preventable problem in our community. In Florida, a child is abused every 11 minutes. One of the most powerful reminders of children lost due to abuse and neglect is CASTLE’s Memory Field that is erected each April to commemorate Child Abuse Prevention Month. The display of blue and white flags travels among the Treasure
Coast counties served by CASTLE in memory of the Florida children who died the previous year from abuse or neglect. This year, there are 145 flags, each with a name and an age of a child lost too soon. It’s an opportunity to remember the tragedies occurring behind the closed doors in our neighborhoods and to reassess what we can do to prevent these tragedies from recurring. Much of the work that we do at

OUR MISSION We are here to provide our readers with completely unbiased news coverage. Fun and entertaining features about the communities in which they live. For our advertising partners we pledge to provide the most complete consultative and marketing programs possible for the best return on their investments.
United Way focuses on addressing critical community issues, like child abuse, by supporting proNancy McCarthy grams that focus on prevention. One of the programs that we support, CASTLE’s Safe Families program, provides resources on the Treasure Coast that help families and prevent child abuse and neglect. The Safe Families program serves families who are at-risk for abusing or neglecting their children, and families who have had a reported incident of abuse or neglect, but who, with support and education, can build a safe and stable home for their children. Through in-home counseling that focuses on teaching alternative parenting methods, the program has achieved an astounding 98 percent success rate. The Safe Families program deals with the problem directly by working one-on-one with parents to change harmful or negligent patterns and replace them with positive approaches to raising and disciplining children. until the job is complete – which may mean weekly sessions for up to one year. As a result, parents learn the skills necessary to become strong parents, leading to safe children and long-term stability for families. “Safe Families and other programs that United Way supports to strengthen families in our community are doing more than changing lives, in some cases the programs are saving lives,” said Jim Vojcsik, president and CEO of United Way. “The goal is to give parents the support that they need to prevent future children from making Memory Field.” To learn more about CASTLE, visit www.castletc.org. For a full list of programs supported by United Way, visit www.UnitedWayMartin.org. Nancy McCarthy, APR, is the Director of Marketing and Communications for United Way of Martin County. United Way’s mission is to lift the community and change lives together through the collective power of advancing the common good. Nationwide it’s been a bit of a head-spinning couple of years for growing social and legal acceptance of the LGBT community — lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. Gay members of the military can now serve openly. Same-sex marriage now exists throughout the nation. It started in Florida in January last year. Additionally, a federal judge recently overturned Mississippi’s ban on same-sex couples adopting children, making it the last state to have had such a law. The changes have generated protests and what some believe is political backlash. Some states have recently adopted laws critics claim permit businesses great latitude to refuse service to some customers if they claim it violates their religious beliefs. Pfister said while Port St. Lucie is a diverse community, it’s a respectful one. “I say Port St. Lucie is a wonderful city,” Pfister said. campaign’s rank cities for being inclusive of LGBT individuals, or not. Pfister said from what he could figure out the low ranking was because, in part, the city doesn’t have a non-discrimination policy in place. “If the city doesn’t have a non-discrimination policy in place, is it because they don’t care, or (discrimination) hasn’t been a problem?” he said. Pfister leans toward there being little need in the area for a non-discrimination policy, thus little push to create one. Pride has started a new project, ONE Treasure Coast. The aim is to create a community center with support groups and other services. While it would primarily be aimed at helping members of the LGBT community, Pfister said some issues members face cross demographics and all would be welcome to attend groups and use services. “We do get several phone calls or emails seeking resources,” Pfister said. “The most common people that contact us are parents (of) or young people going through gender-identity issues. It’s amazing how much transgender has come to light in the last few years.” But, Pride and ONE have a lot of building to do to get a community
Cory Pfister center with support groups and other services going. “Where we lack and what we need help is with committee members,” Pfister said. He added, “We need, really, some leaders, some community members, gay or straight. We want to start doing support groups, so we need somebody to facilitate support groups.” To find out more about Pride and ONE, visit www.prideofthetreasurecoast.org, and www.onetreasurecoast.org. vidual Training).” At the Nine’s house, you’ll see, among signed wrestling posters, family photos and overstuffed couches, the unmistakable signs of a military family. One wall is a dedication to Hayley’s grandfather, a retired lieutenant colonel who served for 47 years in the Army. A framed portrait of him hangs as the centerpiece, encircled by displays of the American flag, medals and other memorabilia. Hayley’s shrine is growing as well. The sacrifice, both for Hayley and the family, is all too real. “It is hard for the men and women serving as they are on the front lines,” Evan says. “But for family here in the states, it’s a different type of hard. The men and women overseas are facing challenges and enemies. They don’t know what they will face day to day. “There is a chance for loss. Here on the home front, we face different challenges, the worrying, the waiting for the next phone call or facetime, helping children cope with the absences of someone they love.” He said Hayley’s 13-year-old brother, Gavin, sleeps in Hayley’s room, just as he did during her last deployment. Evan says the
first deployment was harder on Gavin, but this one is still peppered with emotional days. “As parents, we worry. It’s in our nature, but at the same time, we have to live our lives and help those here,” he says. “When Gavin is upset and missing Hayley, we listen to him. He is very close with his sister.” Abraham Lincoln called sacrifice in battle “the last full measure of devotion,” but the sacrifice of families who eagerly await phone calls, or sometimes fear the phone ringing, is devotion of its own measure. A wise grandfather, telling the story of worrying about his children fighting in Vietnam once said, “I’d look up at the moon and think to myself that my boys could see the same moon so far away. And that brought us a little closer.” The next time the moon is out, perhaps we’ll all think of Hayley Nine, looking up at the same moon as we do. Hayley Nine will be deployed for 400 days. She’ll miss Christmas and birthdays, and good times and bad times. Our country will enjoy another year of freedom because of men and women like her. For a mailing address to send care packages and letters, Evan encourages people to email Hayley at hayleynine@gmail.com

hensive Everglades Restoration Plan, CERP and the Northern Everglades and Estuaries Protection Program annually until 2036. Harrell said in a press release that the new law is about protecting Florida’s future. “Cleaning up the St. Lucie River, Lake Okeechobee, the Caloosahatchee River, the Indian River Lagoon and the Everglades has been a priority for me since I was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives,” Harrell said in the press release. “The future of our way of life is linked directly to the health of our rivers, the Indian River Lagoon, Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades.” Negron echoed Harrell, and added: “This is a historic commitment by the Florida Legislature to our environment,” Negron said in the interview. “It provides us with a dedicated funding source to reduce the need for Lake Okeechobee discharges into our community.” That would be by speeding projects to restore the natural flow of waters from Lake Okeechobee southward. As it is, the Army Corps of Engineers discharges water east and west to reduce pressure against a dike that rings much of the lake. The discharges into the C-44, along with basin runoff along the canal’s route, head into the St. Lucie River and ultimately to the Indian River Lagoon. The nutrient-rich water causes numerous problems in the estuary. The crown jewel of Negron’s local popularity is the Indian River Lagoon and his battle against the discharges waters that further foul the withering waterway. Negron headed up the Florida Senate Select Committee on Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee in 2013. The committee put forward an ambitious wish list, and got more they it asked for. During the 2014 session the Florida Legislature appropriated $232 million to help with Everglades and Indian River Lagoon restoration. Negron will be the Florida Senate’s president next session if he wins reelection in now-redrawn district. Negron has represented the 32nd District. That’s now becoming the 25th. The new district includes much of what is now 32, but will also include parts of Port St. Lucie now in District 21, Sen. Denise Grimsley’s district. That’ll include St. Lucie West and Tradition. The West Pam Beach native has been in state politics for 13 years. He was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000 and represented the

Joe Negron 82nd District until 2006. Negron headed to the Florida Senate in 2009 after a special election in the 28th District, which at the time included eastern Indian River and Martin counties, along with the southern end of St. Lucie and northern side of Palm Beach counties. Reapportionment after the 2010 census put Negron into the 32nd District. He won an election for that seat in 2012. That reapportionment was challenged, and new lines were drawn, putting Negron in what will be the 25th District.

Mother’s Day
The custom of honoring mothers goes back at least as far as 17th century England, which celebrated (and still celebrates) Mothering Sunday. Mother’s Day in the United States originated in 1872. Your arms were open when I needed a hug. Your heart understood when I needed a friend. Your gentle eyes were stern when I needed a lesson. Your strength and love has guided me and gave me wings to fly. Give your Mother a special gift of Love. Let me design a one of a kind custom made Mother’s ring so you can thank her.

EDC of St. Lucie County announces finalists for Pete Hegener Leadership Award FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Economic Development Council of St. Lucie County (EDC) is pleased to announce the three finalists for the prestigious Pete Hegener Leadership Award. The award is presented to a dedicated organization or business leader who has significantly contributed to St. Lucie County’s economy and quality of life. The winner will be recognized at the EDC’s 4th Annual Leadership Dinner, sponsored by Florida Power & Light, on April 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club. The EDC leadership committee interviewed the nominees and voted to choose the three final candidates who most embody the superior leadership and community mindfulness of the award’s namesake, Pete Hegener. The finalists are: Kathryn Hensley, St. Lucie County School Board Member; Michael D. Minton, Shareholder of Dean, Mead, Minton & Zwemer; and the Hon. Ken Pruitt, St. Lucie County Property Appraiser.
“We were very impressed with the number of nominations and the caliber of the nominees,” said Pete Tesch, president of the EDC. “Each person’s accomplishments and positive impact on the community are exemplary and made the final selection an extremely difficult one.” About the finalists Kathryn Hensley, a two-time finalist, is a pillar within the St. Lucie County community. Her role as a long-time member of the School Board of St. Lucie County puts her in an important leadership position to positively impact the education of the children of St. Lucie County. She is involved in several governmental organizations including: the Treasure Coast Council of Local Governments; St. Lucie Transportation Planning Organization; and the SE Florida Regional Partnership. She also serves on the boards of a number of non-profit organizations including: The Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County; The Children’s Movement of Florida; Hibiscus Children’s Center; the Parent Academy of St. Lucie County and many others.
Michael D. Minton
Kathryn Hensley She is a visionary thinker and serves as an inspiration and role model for other leaders in the community helping everyone who comes into her path. Michael Minton is a shareholder at Dean, Mead, Minton & Zwemer. Not only did he help create jobs when he opened the Treasure Coast office of his law firm, but he embodies the visionary spirit shared in Pete Hegener’s original vision for the community development of St.

ST. LUCIE WEST — The technology for maintaining water, sewer and storm-water infrastructure is getting better, so it doesn’t take as much space as was anticipated when the Fairway Isle community was planned. The developer gave the St. Lucie West Service District 10 to 30-foot service easements in the community. But the district recently gave a property owner back 20 feet. “This being a mature development, we don’t see an issue with 10 feet (of service easement),” Dennis Pickle, said. At its February regular meeting, the district’s board of directors unanimously voted to give a homeowner back most of the service easement behind his home. In 2004 a previous homeowner got conditional permission to build a pool onto the easement, with the caveat being that what the district giveth it can taketh away. The current homeowner wanted to make that conditional arrangement permanent. At the board’s monthly work-
shop meeting, members had some reservations about yielding the easement, but at the regular monthly meeting the following day unanimously agreed. “We don’t own it,” member Wayne Smith, said at the workshop. “We’re not giving away anything.” Member Greg Ney said after the district gave the former homeowner permission to build a pool on the easement it gave up any moral right to take it back. “Makes perfect sense to me that if we’re not using it and they are, we should give them the right to it,” he said. Pickle told the board there are other properties in St. Lucie West where the district could yield its service easement claims. Trucks and equipment are smaller than they were when St. Lucie West was planned in the ‘80s. However, the district can’t wave a wand and give up all its unneeded easement area. “The attorney advised it has to be a case-by-case basis,” he told the board. Pickle said there are no pending requests for the district to reduce its service easements.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Temple Beth El Israel is proud to announce our 1st Annual Marshall Flax Memorial Golf Tournament on Sunday, May 22 at Gator Trace Golf Club. In 2006 upon retiring and moving to Port Saint Lucie, Marshall had the opportunity to fulfil his dream of golfing year round. He joined the Legacy Golf Club and also played at many other courses in the area. Although he lived in PGA Village, he was honored to have been welcomed into a Cascades Golf group. For Marshall, golf was much more than the score, he thrived on the camaraderie gained by spending time with old and new friends on the course. Besides golf, Marshall’s other passion was being an active and involved member of Temple Beth El Israel. He realized the importance of the temple as the center of Jewish life in Saint Lucie County and was generous with his resources and time for the benefit of the Temple. He was focused on growth and fundraising. He was also actively involved in several community organizations including “Sarah’s Kitchen”. Dr. Marshall Flax passed away on September 22, 2015. We remember him for his intelligence, energy, humor, love of life and

Walk and learn on preserve hikes Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — There is still time to catch some sun and learn something about the fragile ecosystem in which we live by taking part in one of the nature programs provided by volunteers and staff from St. Lucie County’s Environmental Resources Department. The programs are geared for those ages 12 and older unless otherwise noted and minors must be accompanied by an adult. On Friday, April 22 from 7-9 p.m. brings a “Full Moon Hike” at Indrio Savannas Preserve, 5275 Tozour Road, Fort Pierce. This evening hike lets walkers listen for frogs, owls and other night creatures, Participants can bring flashlights if they have a red lens or translucent red tape over the lens. This helps to preserve everyone’s night vision during the hike. Flower power is on tap Satur-
day, April 23 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. with a “Florida’s Flowers Hike” at George LeStrange Preserve, 4911 Ralls Road, Fort Pierce. This is an introduction to native, seasonal winter/spring flowers and flowering trees in Florida’s natural landscapes. Hikers will also be able to look for birds, mammals and reptiles and look for “evidence” of their presence through tracks and other clues. Hikers will also see the impact of exotic plants on the preserve’s habitats. An “Animals of the Scrub Hike” Sunday, April 24 from 8-10 a.m. will explore the animals who make the harsh environment of the scrub home. The walk, at Walton Scrub Preserve, 10809 Indian River Drive, Fort Piece, will show hikers the species that fight to survive in the challenging environment and the adaptations they’ve made to survive. Hikers will enjoy views of the Indian River Lagoon as they

HIKE from page A28 walk. This walk is appropriate for all ages. Wildflower lovers will enjoy the “Wildflower Workshop” Sunday, April 24 from 4-6 p.m. The walk, at 10 Mile Creek preserve, 3402 Gordy Road, Fort Pierce, will identify beautiful wildflowers in lands adjacent to the St. Lucie River. Hikers are invited to bring their field guides and hand lenses. For those interesting in exploring more flora, the group will head to Gordy Road Recreation Area after the hike to discover a different habitat. The month ends Saturday, April 30 from 8-10 a.m. with a “Prehistoric Lifestyle Hike” at Steven J. Fousek Natural Area (Paleo Hammock Preserve), 8551 Carlton Road, Port St. Lucie. Hikers will learn how the earliest Native Americans in Florida used the flora and fauna to build shelters and feed and clothe themselves. The hike will work its way to an ancient Indian mound. Following the walk, participants will get a chance for hands-on discovery with some of the technology used by early people to hunt and protect themselves. All of these educational programs are free, but space is lim-
ited, so registration is required. Proper footwear and water are required and pets have to stay home. Amanda Thompson is natural resources management coordinator for the Environmental Resources Department. She said that these free programs have been offered for more than a decade. “For some, this is their first experience in the wilds of our area, and in a group setting, they can feel comfortable as they become more familiar with their natural surroundings. Others are more like nature hike groupies, attending every hike and activity that is offered. All walk away having made some connection with nature: interests are piqued, passions are kindled and stewards are born.” These walks are a great way to get some exercise and learn about the diverse and complex ecosystem we call home, For more information, or to register for walks, contact the Environmental Resources Department at (772) 577-3562, email Thompsonam@stlucieco. org or visit the website www. stlucieco.gov/erd. That website also includes a complete list of all St. Lucie County parks and preserves.

TREASURE COAST — The St. Lucie County Aquarium, featuring the Smithsonian Marine Ecosystems Exhibit, set attendance records for March with a nearly 30-percent increase over last year. Attendance for March was 5,088 compared to last year’s 3,922. Additionally, educational program attendance was also up, with 586 people (an 11-percent increase) learning about local marine environments. The educational increase does not include the Aquarium’s 15th Birthday Bash during spring break, where more than 350 people visited the facility on that day. Overall, spring break attendance almost doubled this year with 1,641 visitors to the Aquarium in that week alone, compared with 879 visitors during spring break week in 2015. The increased attendance is attributable to two positive factors: the growing public interest in the Indian River Lagoon and its importance to our quality of life, and the excellent educational programming provided by the staff of the Smithsonian, who also
maintain all of the marine exhibits. Located at 420 Seaway Drive in Fort Pierce, the St. Lucie County Aquarium is a 5,000-square-foot public facility that operates in partnership between the Smithsonian Marine Station in Fort Pierce and St. Lucie County’s Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department. The Aquarium’s six exhibits and touch tank hold more than 8,000 gallons of marine life which accurately reflect the habitats typically found in the Indian River Lagoon and surrounding coastal waters. Hours of operations for the Aquarium are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. The Aquarium remains opened on Mondays during the winter months. Admission into the St. Lucie County Aquarium is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and children (ages 4-17). The first Tuesday of each month is free admission day. Group rates and memberships are available. For more information about the Aquarium call (772) 462-FISH (3474) or for school/group bookings call (772) 465-3271 or visit: www.sms.si.edu/SMEE. z

TRADITION — Community, value, and food are at the heart of the new owner, Robert Troup of Tin Fish Restaurant located in Tradition. From spacious outdoor scenic seating to high vaulted ceilings and roomy booths and tabletops, locals can enjoy elegant architectural design, tantalizing food fusion with large portions and fair prices. Robert Troup, the restaurant’s new owner, is six months in, and he brings more than just food to the table. Online reviews rave about the sweet and tangy seafood dish specialties that include Kaboom Shrimp, Blackened Mahi-Mahi Quesadilla served with a chipotle-based sauce, to beefy tacos, and various garden-based salads. “Everything has to align with the food value and what you are charging your customers,” says Troup. Familiar with Tin Fish restaurant’s long-standing reputation for fine foods and the location, Troup left behind 30 years as an area manager for TooJay’s restaurants, taking the leap from upper-level restaurant management to personal ownership. For him, it was a “no brainer.” Like many other franchise organizations, Tin Fish has set menu items. What makes this location unique is that Troup has permission to create new menu items available in Tradition. Over the last six months, Troup has researched the latest national food and beverage trends and recreated popular ones ex-

IRSC offers summer theater fun Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
Year-round residents have a chance to see live theater this summer as the Indian River State College performing arts students present four shows. The theatrical season on the Treasure Coast is expanding to include more than “the season” and that’s great news for the many people who are calling the area home all year. From May 5-7, the students present Rick Abbott’s comedy, ‘Play On’ at the McAlpin Fine Arts Center. The play is about a theater group that has been together for many years and is about to stage an original play while the playwright keeps making revisions. There are so many changes that actors can’t remember lines, entrances or exits, all while the playwright is in the audience watching. The musical theater students take to the stage at the Wynne Black Box Theatre May 19-21 for dessert theater. They will present a “Salute to Contemporary Broadway,” with highlights from “Memphis,” “Love Never Dies,” and “Finding Neverland.” Dale Rieth, who heads the vocal music program, is directing and Molly Magee, the head of the dance program, is doing the choreography. Following the performance, cheesecake and coffee will be served. Playwright and screenwriter Neil Simon is on tap June 16-18 at the Wynne Black Box The-

IRSC from page B3 “We don’t usually do that many shows. We added the two Neil Simon shows because people love Neil Simon. I wanted to get these students the experience and the audience into the Black Box. If Neil Simon doesn’t draw them, nothing will. In my early days, Neil Simon was how I built my audience, and as a director, I cut my teeth on Neil Simon. They’re well-crafted plays and the audience loves them.” First up, though, is “Play On.” “It’s a farce, it’s really silly,” Moberg said. “It’s a play about doing a play. It’s a lot of fun and a chance to get mores students
who haven’t been on stage a lot on stage. I get my ‘newbies’ on stage. Everybody gets to play two characters: the actor they play and the character in the play.” Here’s a great opportunity to find live theater on a summer evening or for a matinee. Come out and support the kids and see a show. Indian River State College students present four plays this summer on the Main Campus, 3209 Virginia Ave., Fort Pierce. Tickets for “Play On,” “Plaza Suite” and “California Suite” are $15. Tickets for the dessert theater music revue are $18. Call the IRSC box office at (772) 462-4750 Monday-Friday 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Music students from Palm Pointe Educational Research School and St. Lucie West K-8 School were among eleven middle schools in St. Lucie County whose bands and choral groups received accolades from the recent District 13 Music Performance Assessment. The MPAs, as they are known, are opportunities for bands and choral groups to perform and receive feedback from qualified judges. The recent assessments were hosted by Treasure Coast High School. The Palm Pointe Concert Band, under the direction of Jason Hatfield, received a “Superior” rating and the St. Lucie West K-8 Concert Band, under the direction of Jennifer Rosser, received an “Excellent” rating. In a statement, district Superintendent Wayne Gent noted the importance of music education on the schools. “Our students are extremely talented and we are committed to providing quality opportunities for them to exercise their talents and enrich their experiences. Her group is made up of 7th and 8th graders with some selected 6th graders mixed in. They only have 10 rehearsals as a group before they go in front of the judges to play three pieces chosen from a list. “You only get one time to get it
right,” she said. “There are nerves. They haven’t done this a lot and anything can go wrong or go really well.” Rosser is extremely proud that her students scored a “Superior” rating in sight-reading. For that portion of the assessment, the bands have three minutes to look at a march and five minutes to look at an overture. “Even though our total score was an “Excellent,” the biggest testament to a music teacher is if your students can take a piece of music they’ve never seen,” Rosser said. “The fact that students earned a “Superior” there is the biggest reward as a teacher. It’s saying that they are understanding what I’m teaching them. That’s the rewarding experience, that my students ae learning what I’m teaching them. I’m proud of them for being able to do that.” Rosser said that the entire experience was valuable. “It’s a great learning experience that we were that close,” she said. “Each part is important and they need to know their part to the fullest extent. When one is not pulling their weight, they pull the others down. By being so close to a ‘Superior,” they learn that every kid is responsible and teamwork is important. Music teaches these lessons that can be transferred to the real world. It’s not just about the music. It’s the great lessons they’re learning.” Jason Hatfield of Palm Pointe meets with his 81 7th and 8th graders every day. That gives them the opportunity to perform as a unit many times before they reach the MPAs. “They really love it and do such a great job of taking it seriously

and being professional,” he said. “It’s such a joy to teach them and watch their expressions and see them learn. I absolutely love my job. Instead of being stressful, (MPAs) turn into a fun experience for everyone.” Hatfield said that he and his students talk about nerves but that the students know how to deal with them. “By drilling so many times, when you get on stage, it’s not time to think, it’s time to perform,” he said. “It’s an extension of the band room.” Hatfield wanted to give special notice to Sarah Wauters, who received a “Superior” rating for student conducting. “We have some very strong (middle school) female conductors in the county,” he said. “They’re great role models.” While the school year is winding down, the students have one more big event. On May 6, they will go to the University of Tampa for a morning band clinic. In the afternoon, they get to be tourists and have fun. It’s good way to end the year. It’s great to have the opportunity to recognize these students. The kids who participate in band or chorus don’t always get the attention of some of the other activities and they certainly don’t have a newspaper section dedicated to their accomplishments. They work really hard and deserve the praise.
