PALM CITY — In a world where women are often pitted against each other in the media to create drama and ratings spikes, a group of local business women, 300 strong, gathered to combat the vicious stereotype and elevate one another for a good cause. During the Port St. Lucie Business Women 23rd Annual Fashion Show and Luncheon, held at the scenic Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club, members and nonmembers met to network and raise money for local charities and organizations that work with women and children. The high-spirited event was an accurate portrayal of how caring women are to each other, said Mindi Fetterman, Tradition resident and founder of the Inner Truth Project, a new center in St. Lucie West that helps survivors of sexual abuse. “Women are always portrayed as catty and very shallow and jealous, and I feel like it’s anything but that, especially in our communi-

TRADITION — Most associate academic advancement with teachers who strive for excellence in the classroom, but much credit is also due to the staffers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to secure a school’s success. Eric Henik, plant manager at Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition, is a prime example, St. Lucie County School’s Superintendent Michael Lannon said as he announced Henik was named one of five state finalists for the School Related Employee of the Year award. “I think what it means for the whole community

ST. LUCIE WEST — Mired in a hitting slump, many baseball players will implore tactics that contrast from their typical approach at the plate. Some may tinker with their batting stance while others may attack the first pitch that they see as opposed to waiting on your pitch, but with St. Lucie Mets second baseman T.J. Rivera, it’s all about maintaining confidence and a trust in his talents that has carried him throughout his brief career. During the first four games of a recent six-game home-stand, Rivera collected only one hit in 14 ABs, including eight strikeouts. Struggling,

“My clients set the standard, I simply live up to it. My clients and I are a team.”
Joe Mutter, H.A.S.
We invite you to experience the Mutter’s Hearing Center difference You Can Experience the Mutter Difference
Do You Need a No-Cost Hearing Evaluation?
Florida State Licensed Hearing Aid Specialist Joe Mutter, owner of Mutter’s Hearing Center states, “Our typical patient is a current client referral, or someone who bought a hearing aid elsewhere and that product did not fit their needs, or someone who has had a negative customer service experience elsewhere with an inexperienced or unskilled hearing aid provider. People simply come here hoping to improve their quality of life by improving their hearing.” In many instances patients that need hearing aids have chased those nonexistent newspaper deals or specials and bought lower technology hearing aids.
“It was a great experience, he didn’t rush me and wanted to hear my story .” Ceci Walker/Port St. Lucie
This gives them a negative first experience and they simply give up on hearing aids. The provider they chose at the time quite easily put was more interested in their checkbooks than the quality of their hearing. They did not explain fully the benefits of quality hearing aids; they went for the quick sale because they saw the patient expressed concerns about the cost of quality aids.
Don’t Wait - Every Day Matters Mr. Mutter emphasizes that patients should not always look for the lowest cost hearing aid on the market. He says fit and performance are the two most important factors. Hearing aids are designed to help clarify muffled, distorted sound and allow you to hear through noise. Quality hearing aids will help with that. You have to remember that this is an important investment in their hearing. “People who chase the deals they see advertised out there for blowout sales’ or Hearing Aids starting at $895.00 and the like… are fooling themselves, those deals simply do not exist,” Mr. Mutter explains. “I don’t want to be a drive-thru-style office. I want patients to leave here with a thorough understanding of the product they are buying and how it will help them to hear better because when you suffer from loss of hearing, it diminishes your quality of life and isolates you. I want to enhance quality of life.”

Those who suspect they suffer from hearing loss should obtain a thorough clinical hearing evaluation; Mutter’s Hearing Center provides those at no cost. This clinical evaluation will determine if your hearing and understanding of human speech can be corrected with hearing aids. You may have hearing loss if: • People say you are shouting when you talk to them • You need the TV or radio turned up louder than other people do • You often ask people to repeat themselves because you can’t hear or understand them, especially in groups or when there is noise • You can hear better out of one ear than the other • You have to strain to hear • If things just sound unclear and not as bright as they used to, it’s time to get tested.

FDIC sues Smith Former CEO, seven other officers named in filing By Patrick McCallister Staff writer pmccallister@yourvoiceweekly.com The Fort Pierce-based Riverside National Bank of Florida was hardly alone in failing back in 2010. The Federal Deposit and Insurance Corporation recently filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court against the former CEO and president, Vernon Smith, along
with seven others, alleging questionable loan practices that cost the bank more than $8 million before its closure. Riverside’s failure cost the Federal Deposit and Insurance Corporation about $492 million. “In this crisis, Florida has had the second-most failures,” FDIC spokesman David Barr said. “Georgia has led the way.” According to FDIC records, nationally about 485 banks failed

ST. LUCIE WEST — For the first time in five years, financial loan officers are seeing substantial signs of hope. St. Lucie West SunTrust Bank assistant vice president and mortgage loan consultant Monica Brown says, the area’s economic future looks bright, a stark contrast from the crippling years since 2008 when unemployment numbers skyrocketed and foreclosed homes were a common sight. “We are seeing a huge comeback … I’m getting appraisals in now, where I’m shocked. It’s a good shock.” Borrower and bank morale has also risen, Brown said. “The atmosphere has definitely changed. It’s not going to come roaring back like how we were in 2005, 2006 when loan officers could literally just sit at their desks and have people waiting in the lobby,” said Brown, who cited a recent trend report that predicts a 44 percent increase in home buying in 2014. “All they did was write loan after loan after loan. It was just like that because of the big boom.” The Tradition resident said shortly after she joined the branch, St. Lucie West’s oldest bank established in 1995, the market began to take a nosedive. “Everything kind of went back to old-fashioned loan writing. Lots and lots of documentation, no shortcut-type underwriting or anything like that,” Brown said of an ominous 2007. “The values totally plummeted,” she said. Brown said she’s proud to be

Vitalia’s 21,000-square-foot recreation center slated to open in 2014 By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer
nrodriguez@yourvoiceweekly.com
TRADITION — AV Homes has cleared the final hurdle in its endeavor to build an $8 million recreation center in the community Vitalia at Tradition. The Port St. Lucie City Council approved the major site plan application at its April 8 meeting following a recommendation from a site plan review committee. The 21,713-square-foot Clubhouse is expected to be completed and open by early next year, Ken Plonski, senior vice president of communications for the Arizona-based company, said. Recreation amenities at the facility will include a pool, aerobics center, tennis courts, bocce courts, pickle ball courts and a golf practice area with a 3,500-square-foot putting green. Inside rooms will include multi-purpose rooms, a ballroom and a kitchen. The staff recommended approval of the site plan request based on its consistency with the city’s land development regulations and polices of its comprehensive

The review estimates 981 daily vehicle trips on Apple Blossom Trail that should not have an adverse effect on adjacent roadways. The recreation center and the addition of close to 1,000 homes over the next 18 to 36 months is indicative of a mending housing market, Plonski said. Vitalia at Tradition offers nine floor plans ranging in size from approxi-
mately 1,400- to 2,500-squarefeet. The homes are priced from the low $160,000s to about $250,000. “If you look at Vitalia at Tradition as a whole, the community is benefiting from the recovery of the housing industry,” Plonski said. Plonski said the project will mean jobs and a bright economic future for Tradition.
“It’s putting people back to work in construction. Vitalia is doing its part to improve the local economy,” Plonski said. “We’re going to have dozens of different trades on site for construction of that facility,” he said. “We believe our timing is perfect at Vitalia,” Plonski said. “We’re continuing to see some pretty good trends in the marketing during our time being there.”

HONOR from page 1 is that Eric is a representative of the high quality of professionalism that we have working for boys and girls,” Lannon said, bundle of balloons in hand. Lannon and other district staffers converged at the school’s bookkeeper’s office last week where Henik was completing purchase orders for supplies. Although Henik already knew he was a finalist, Lannon said the district still wanted to surprise and thank him in person. “This is a man who is just so skilled and understands people so well that he’s a master teacher of what it is he does for others throughout the district and willingly gives of his knowledge and expertise,” Lannon said. “We’re really proud of him. He’s a great ambassador for all of us.” The finalist will be announced the morning of May 17 during a ceremony at LEGOLAND Park in Orlando, Lannon said. The last time St. Lucie County had a state finalist for the honor was in 1999, the superintendent added. Henik said he’s looking forward to the May date.

“I will represent St. Lucie County in a very professional way,” Henik said. “It’s been a really fun ride starting with just getting the recognition from my colleagues and then the district.” He also thanked friends, family and colleagues for their support during his almost six-year career at Palm Pointe. Henik was named the district’s School Related Employee of the Year during a ceremony in February. “I’m recognized and people see the hard work I’m doing,” Henik said. “It wouldn’t be possible if I didn’t have a huge support system and just so many people involved from my school to other schools and people on the district level. I get a lot of help and a lot of support. That’s the key.” One of Henik’s biggest supporters looked on with a smile. “He’s done well and works hard. I’m glad he got appreciated for it,” said Henik’s wife, Kristin, who is a nurse at the same school. Palm Pointe Principal Debra Snyder embraced Henik and expressed her gratitude for his hard work. “He knows how very proud we are of him. He couldn’t be more deserving,” Snyder said.

That year Riverside was among 157 banks that closed and went into receivership. Another 92 did in 2011. Since the start of 2012, another 59 banks have folded and gone into receivership. Barr said the FDIC starts analyzing the failed banks’ records quickly and communicating about possible legal actions with those it feels contributed to the closures with questionable actions. “There’s a lag time, Barr said. “We have three years under the statute of limitations to file (lawsuits).” Barr said that the FDIC board of directors has authorized 109 lawsuits naming 888 individuals since the wave of bank closures started in the second half of 2008. Not all of the named individuals were directors and officers. Some are individuals that provided professional services, such as law firms. “If our board of directors authorizes a lawsuit, our staff will put together very detailed claims and file it in district court,” Barr said. “The defendants know it’s coming at that point. If they wish to settle, we can settle and not name them in the suit. If all the parties (named in a potential suit) get together and want to settle, we can do that.” The FDIC has filed 54 suits against directors and officers of failed banks in recent years. Additionally, the FDIC turns over any evidence of criminal wrongdoing to the Department of Justice. In its suit against former directors and officers at Riverside, the FDIC named Cindy Robbins, Ray Horton, Robert McCarthy, Timothy McGuire, Susan Sproul, Steve Strickland and John Williams. Among other allegations, the
FDIC claimed in its suit Smith participated in making loans that violated policies the bank adopted in 2006 after an independent auditor discovered too many loans had been secured against stocks held by Riverside’s holding company. “By approving stock-secured loans in violation of Loan Policy and failing to follow proper underwriting, the Defendants deviated from safe and sound banking practices in a negligent or grossly negligent manner, causing damage to RNB for, among other things, the Loan Transactions,” the complaint reads. The complaint claims that by 2009 Riverside charged off more than $16 million of outstanding balances secured by affiliate stock, which exasperated undercapitalization. Among the defaults were loans that violated the 2006 policy made to Smith’s son and daughter. According to the complain, about $2.3 million of $2.5 million of loans made to Smith’s daughter — called K.P. in the suit — were charged off. The FDIC claims another $1.2 million of loans totaling about $1.33 million made to Smith’s son —called C.S. in the suit — were charged off. Riverside National Bank, which Smith founded in 1982, had 60 branches in 10 Florida counties when it closed. An unidentified woman at Smith’s home phone number responded to a Your Voice News & Views request to speak to him by saying, “Vernon won’t want to comment.”

Women’s Health Specialists offering leading edge services skoppel@yourvoiceweekly.com
JENSEN BEACH — For nearly 40 years, Women’s Health Services has served the health needs of women on the Treasure Coast. The obstetrics and gynecology practice has taken care of women at all stages of their lives, from puberty through menopause. Now the practice is expanding, adding a new location, and offering services including physician-supervised weight loss and an aesthetic center. While the practice has a satellite office in St. Lucie West, it will open a larger facility close to Martin Health System’s Tradition Medical Center, now under construction. It will offer many of the same services, including digital mammography, now offered at the Jensen Beach location. The practice also offers aesthetic services to women and men. Bill Hughes, the practice administrator, said it was a natural extension of offering services that are supervise by a physician. “A physician is medical director,” he said. “Each physician can refer patients.”
Clients at the Jeune Nu Aesthetic Beauty and Laser Center do not have to be patients of the practice. They can choose services that include injectables and fillers, clinical facial treatments, laser treatments, Latisse, a prescription medication for insufficient eyelashes, organic facials, chemical peels and CoolSculpting. The latter is an FDA-approved non-surgical method for reducing bulges of fat. It uses cooling panels that target fat cells. It is done in the office, takes about an hour, and involves no downtime. The technology was developed after physicians observed how cold affected fat cells. “For years, frostbite victims had permanent loss of fat layers,” Hughes said. “Children who ate a lot of popsicles had dimples in their cheeks from a similar loss of fat.” CoolSculpting involves positioning the device on the body. It draws the bulge up between two cooling panels. There is a sensation of being pulled, to make sure the selected tissue is efficiently cooled. “It has the results of liposuction,” Hughes said. “The fat cells are killed. It removes 15-20 per-
cent of a fat layer.” Results from the procedure being to appear approximately three weeks after treatment and are most noticeable after one to three months. The body takes that time to flush out the fat cells and it may do that for up to six months. The fat cells are eliminated, so if healthy eating and exercise habit are maintained, the results should remain. Patients who are interested in the procedure can come in for a free consultation. Before procedures are performed, medical histories are reviewed by a physician or nurse-practitioner. While new services and locations are exciting, the medical practice, consisting of seven physicians, three midwives, and a nurse-practitioner, remains the core of Women’s Health Services. Whether it is screening for breast cancer, performing minimally-invasive laparoscopic procedures or counseling a patient on wellness, the staff’s goal is to provide the best care for women. “There’s a great group of physicians,” Hughes said. “We stay upto-date and always bring leading edge practices to our patients and women’s health care,” Hughes
JeuneNu licensed aesthetician Lisa Sherrell and Trina Sudhoff, aesthetic director from JeuneNu. said. There is an additional perk in working at a women’s health practice. “It’s always a joy to bring life into the world,” he said. Women’s Health Specialists is located at 3498 N.W. Q- how long should my teeth last? A- Teeth can last a lifetime if cared for properly from an early age. Prevention is always simpler than treatment. While teeth can last a long time, they may not always present very well, they change color and shape. What else did you get at age 6 that you still have today? Q- Why are my teeth sensitive? A- Sensitivity can be from cavities or from trauma. Amazingly, this trauma can be from clenching or grinding your teeth other than meal times. Teeth can become sensitive to temperature or biting pressure.

Student scientists visit VGTI nrodriguez@yourvoiceweekly.com
TRADITION — On Wednesdays, area high school students witness firsthand the decades-long medical crusade to eradicate one of the world’s deadliest diseases in history. In the second-year partnership between St. Lucie County Public Schools and Tradition’s esteemed Vaccine & Gene Therapy Institute of Florida, students have a chance to put their book smarts to the test as they shadow VGTI scientists who believe they’re on the brink of curing HIV/AIDS. “We’re closer than ever before for sure,” senior scientist Tony Cooper told a group of four students from Treasure Coast and Centennial high schools. “... In reality, where we are right now, we could cure HIV in one generation if we could get everyone in the world to take antiretroviral drugs for the rest of their lives ...” So the fight to find a more practical cure forges on, Cooper said as he demonstrated how samples are transferred into examination plates. Steven Shatola, the district’s science support specialist who taught science for 27 years before
his promotion two years ago, said the gift of shadowing a scientist is a rare one students should treasure. “In our backyard, we have worldclass discoveries happening,” Shatola said. “There are opportunities for our high school students. They get to see what they learn in the classrooms and how it applies to career opportunities as well.” “They get to experience the daily life of what it’s like to be a research scientist at a world-class research facility in St. Lucie County.” Student applicants seeking careers in medical or biomedical fields are evaluated annually and are then selected by a committee of teachers. Two students from each high school in the district will participate, Shatola said. During the day-long tour, students learned proper protocol and procedures to protect themselves and samples. In a gene sequencing lab where samples are analyzed for presence or absence of certain genes, the young scientists learned to spot abnormal sequences that reveal a disease in a patient, VGTI research associate Andrew Smith explained. Smith also offered a word of advice about networking and break-

Because now I ask more questions than anybody.” Kedisha Christie, 17, a junior at Centennial, who is thinking of entering the biomedical or medical field, said the experience put her learning into action. “I always wanted to be a doctor since I was younger, so at Cen-
tennial I’m taking medical classes and this is like an extension of it,” said Christie, who donned a pale blue lab coat with a notepad in hand. Christie’s fellow classmate Jennifer Kiernan, 16, said the experience was priceless. “It’s very exciting. They’re (the scientists) very professional and really nice,” Kiernan said. “It’s very close to home. It’s an excellent opportunity and the chance of a lifetime.”

WOMEN from page 1 ty,” Fetterman said. “Women are always empowering other women. Helping each other be the best that they can be, not only to help themselves in their own lives, but to better the community.” Fetterman said the event was a place where women could feel safe and secure with each other. “It’s really a beautiful gift that we give ourselves because when we’re lifting somebody else up, we’re lifting our own lives,” she said. “This is really a new kind of place for us to be. To let down our guard, help each other out, and in turn make sure that we’re doing it for families in the community. It’s a new refreshing change.” Florida Rep. Larry Lee Jr. District 18, said the luncheon should serve as an inspiration for men. “Well it motivates me as a man. I think women … are just great leaders (and) organizers,” said Lee, a PGA Village resident who modeled clothing from Men’s Warehouse during the fashion show. “I think men should step up and be doing more and more things as these women are doing today.” The sellout event raised more than $15,000 through ticket sales, a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. Local businesses from around St. Lucie and Martin counties donated items for the

The festivities also included a fashion show featuring styles from White House Black Market, Chico’s and Men’s Warehouse. “It’s just amazing because every year that I’ve attended, we’ve always had a sellout crowd,” organization treasurer Stephanie Morgan said. Longtime member and Tradition matriarch Jane Rowley said the event never fails to disappoint thanks to the women in charge. “Still to this day, I see a lot of women I’ve known all those years. They’re all out there for the good of the community, helping other women and young girls,” Rowley said. “So, you can’t ask for more than that in a community.” A portion of the funds raised went toward providing scholarships for women attending Indian River State College, Rowley said. Lisa Teetor, event coordinator for the Martin County Chamber of Commerce, said the gathering was full of opportunities. “It provides a lot of people with the experience of meeting people they may not meet otherwise, learn about some nonprofits that they can do more for down the road and just bring a lot of women together that have like-minded attitudes toward living every day,” Teetor said. Nine months of planning went into coordinating the event, member Dorothy Kamm, of the PGA

ST. LUCIE WEST — The Florida chapter of Air Conditioning Contractors of America want criminals who perform unlicensed work on homes to know with the help of vigilant homeowners, law enforcement will eventually hunt them down. As part of a 10-city tour to promote awareness about unlicensed activity, the ACCA of Florida hosted a seminar last month at SpringHill Suites in St. Lucie West, which was attended by licensed contractors from around the Treasure Coast, including Martin and St. Lucie counties. The ACCA is a nonprofit association that serves more than 60,000 professionals and 4,000 businesses in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning industry. The organization aims to promote professional contracting, energy efficiency and healthy indoor environments. Guests included representatives from the Stuart and Port St. Lucie Police departments, Martin County and Port St. Lucie Building departments, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Ways to stop the illegal activity are simple, the panel said. Demand stricter legislation with higher fines or jail time from local politicians, report suspicious activity from white vans with no lettering and verify workers are indeed licensed.
In an emailed statement, Rep. Patrick Murphy D-Dist. 18 said he would support any Florida legislation to stop unlicensed activity. “Illegal, unlicensed contractors are a serious threat to our economic health and growth,” Murphy said. “While regulations and enforcement of these matters is generally handled on the state level, I support efforts to crack down on illegal contractors.” In 2012, the Department of Business and Professional Regulation reprimanded a total of 86 unlicensed contractors in the Palm Beach region, which includes Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties, Sandi Poreda, director of communications said. Fifty-three of those citations were in construction, 22 in electrical construction work and 11 in electrical work. Michelle Owen, Martin County code enforcement supervisor, said since last March, 69 citations have been issued to unlicensed workers in the county. Port St. Lucie building code administrator Joel Dramis said approximately 180 unlicensed contractors received citations last year for providing deceptive services to city residents. “(Residents) need to understand they are not licensed or insured,” Dramis said. “They could get hurt and the homeowner is responsible for any injuries … They could also be doing work that’s not in

compliance with code.” Dramis said some simple research can prevent a big catastrophe. “Contact the local building department to make sure they are licensed for the work they are doing. Ask to see a license and call the city to verify a license.” To report unlicensed activity, contact local authorities or report them to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, department investigator Jeff Holland said. Holland encourages residents to pay attention to the details. “Try to get as much evidence as you can. You can take a picture, you can get names,” Holland said. “Just get as much information as you can if we can’t get on site immediately to jump on it, we can still have enough to open a case and pursue it.” The department performs frequent sweeps and sets up houses for sting operations, Holland’s partner, Thad Clark, said. The pair also combs sites like Craigslist hourly to monitor unlicensed activity. During times of crisis, Clark said the crime is no longer a misdemeanor. “When a state of emergency is declared, unlicensed activity becomes a third-degree felony …,”
Clark said. “What happens when we catch you on the job when a state of emergency has been declared is we take you from that job straight to the jailhouse.” Dave Hutchins, Florida Chapter president and owner of Bay Area Air Conditioning in Crystal River, detailed common warning signs of an unlicensed worker. “Price is too low. Do they have a lettered truck? Do they have the license number on their vehicle when they came out? Things like that,” Hutchins said. “Generally an unkempt vehicle as well, something that doesn’t look too good usually. Because unfortunately most of those guys doing it need the money,” he added. Attendee John Pankraz, owner of Elite Electric & Air in Port St. Lucie, said he hoped to learn “how we can help stop the unlicensed contractors and how we can help the homeowners from being hurt from the unlicensed activity.” Pankraz said he believes 10 to 20 percent of perceived contractors are unlicensed. Kevin Sharkey, owner of Stuart-based Sharkey Air, said he regularly reports suspicious activity. “I call probably once every two or three weeks. If I see something going on that I feel it’s just not a level playing field, then I’ll go
An unmarked van stocked full of equipment is oftentimes a dead giveaway for an unlicensed contractor. Report suspicious activity to local law enforcement or call the Department of Business and Professional Regulation at (866) 532-1440. ahead and call. The county is very good at responding,” Sharkey said. Sharkey added unlicensed workers are a common sight at home improvement stores on the weekends. “All you need to do is go to Home Depot on a Saturday, or Lowes, or one of those big box stores, sit in the parking lot and watch them. (They’ll come out with) hot water heaters and the big plumbing fixtures…,” Sharkey said. ACCA Florida executive director Lisa Tamargo said unlicensed contractors rob legitimate business owners of revenue. “By them playing by the rules, (licensed contractors are) losing business to people that are putting consumers at risk … They
have no overhead and sometimes you’ll find that some of the equipment has been stolen, or they’ve purchased it off of the Internet…” Tamargo also cautioned homeowners of a more sinister side of the story. “What people don’t realize, too, inviting (unlicensed contractors) into their home is putting their family at risk…” “Say for instance, you’re getting ready to go on vacation, you’re packing, you don’t know who these people are.” For more information on the ACCA, visit acca.org To report unlicensed activity, dial 911 or call the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation at (866) 532-1440.

the 24-year-old prospect opted against any drastic change and chose to stick to his game plan. “I think when you start struggling, you start to lose trust in your game plan and begin to second guess yourself,” Rivera said. “When you have a couple of games where you don’t have a hit, that’s when the mental games come in and where you start to lose a little bit of confidence.” “For me, confidence is the key. With it, I can get back to my game plan and hit a pitch that I’m looking for.” With that approach to his at bats, Rivera ended the homestand with 4-8, with three doubles and four RBIs. But why can a player like Rivera regain his confidence? Simply, he’s hit everywhere he’s been. Rivera signed with the Mets organization as a free agent in 2010, after going undrafted following four years at Troy University. In 2011, Rivera hit .301 in time split with Mets affiliates Kingsport (Appalachian League) and Brooklyn (New-York-Pennsylvania League). Moving to Class A and A+ affiliates Savannah (South Atlantic League) and current team St. Lucie (Florida State League), Rivera added 19 points to his average in 2012. Despite the mini skid, through 17 games this season, Rivera leads St. Lucie in batting average (.299) and RBIs (17). With his current success, Rivera is driven by the chip on his shoulder formed on the day he undrafted three years ago. “It kind of got me down a little bit because ever since I was kid, I wanted to play profession baseball,” Rivera said. “I understood

Plans in full swing for the 17th Annual Chuck Hill Golf Classic For Your Voice News & Views
Five years ago, the Boys & Girls Club Board of Directors renamed the annual golf tournament the “Chuck Hill” Golf Classic honoring retired principal and founding board member Chuck Hill, who originated the tournament 17 years ago. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised and it is fair to say that without the tournament, the Club would not have prospered as it has. The Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the youth of the community. By providing a safe place to learn and grow, as well as life enhancing programs and character developing experiences; the club strives to inspire and enable all members, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. With 18 locations throughout the county, the Boys & Girls Club programs serve a diverse group of kids age 5-18. The over 2,000 members come from a variety of backgrounds. You can reach the Club by calling (772) 460-9918 or visit www. bgcofslc.org or by liking us at www. facebook.com/bgcofslc.
The 17th Annual Chuck Hill Golf Classic to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County will be held on Saturday, May 4, 1 p.m. shotgun start, at Club Med, Sandpiper Bay, Golf Club in Port St. Lucie. Chuck Hill, Charles Cuomo, Jack Kelly, and Bob Johnson, this year’s Golf Tournament co-chairs, and their committee has been busy planning a day of golf, filled with competition, fun, prizes and fellowship. Golfers will enjoy the usual contests of closest to the pin, longest drive, and a $500 Shoot Out prize. The cost is $75 per individual or $300 per foursome. Sponsors include Club Med, Sandpiper Bay, Law Offices of John T. Kennedy, and Publix Super Market Charities. If you would like to play, sponsor a team or sponsor a tee, please contact Charles Cuomo at (772) 468-0090 or by email: ccuomo550@ hotmail.com. Tournament is limited to the first 100 paid golfers. All proceeds benefit the Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County.

Performers use talents to give back By Shelley Koppel Staff writer
skoppel@yourvoiceweekly.com
STUART — Performers have big hearts. They will often stage concerts or shows as fundrasiers or entertainment for worthy causes. Often, a performer has a particular organization that captures his interest. Artists Helping All is a group of local performers who donate their time and talent to any non-profit group in Martin and St. Lucie counties. They provide entertainment, at no cost, and tailored for a specific event. If a nonprofit is planning an event and needs entertainment, AHA is ready to serve. AHA came about in 2012, when Gale Baker, a playwright, author, jazz musician and actor directed the show “Ballroom” at the Barn Theatre. Several of the performers discovered that they loved the community in which they lived as much as they loved the theater. The core group of Baker, Jeanette Mazzella, Dante Marelli, Arlette Eulo and David Pierce, decided to combine both passions and AHA was born. The group can put on everything

Riverside announces new season By Shelley Koppel Staff writer
skoppel@yourvoiceweekly.com
VERO BEACH — The Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach is celebrating its 40th anniversary in style, with a season offering something for every theater-goer. The show, “I Love a Piano,” is a celebration of the music of Irving Berlin. It comes to the Riverside on Oct. 29 and runs through
Nov. 17. The show follows a piano from one owner to the next in a nostalgia-filled tribute to a great American composer. The music of Irving Berlin features some of the most beloved songs of the 20th century, including “Blue Skies,” “There’s No Business like Show Business,” White Christmas,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “God Bless America” and “Easter Parade.”

RIVERSIDE from page 23 The Broadway hit, “Miss Saigon” comes to the Riverside on Jan. 14-Feb. 2. The show, from the creators of “Les Miserables,” and based on Puccini’s opera, “La Bohemia,” tells the story of an American soldier and a Vietnamese girl who fall in love and are separated during the fall of Saigon. “God of Carnage,” by Yasmina Reza, won the 2009 Tony for Best Play. When a child is hurt by another child at a park, the parents meet to discuss the incidents. It quickly escalates into a broad comedy about adults behaving badly. The show, which contains strong language, comes to the theater on Jan. 28-Feb. 19. One of the greatest musicals of all time, “South Pacific,” comes to the Riverside on Feb. 18 - March 9. The Rodgers and Hammerstein show won 10 Tony awards, with songs such as “Some Enchanted Evening,” Younger than Springtime, Bali Ha’i,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out my Hair” and “You Have to Be Carefully Taught.” The show, which dealt with racial barriers to love, was considered groundbreaking. “Closer than Ever,” by David Shire and Richard Maltby, comes to the Riverside on March 11-30. This is an intimate musical revue about life when you’ve been around the block a few times. The season concludes with “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” The winner of the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for Drama comes to the Riverside on April 8-27. The musical
satire of 1960s business ethics is the creation of the same team that wrote “Guys and Dolls.” The Frank Loesser music and lyrics include “I Believe in You,” “The Company Way,” “Rosemary” and “Brotherhood of Man.” For this production, the theater has joined forces with Philadelphia’s Walnut Street Theatre. In an email, Allen Cornell, Riverside Theatre’s producing artistic director, expressed satisfaction with the season. “I am thrilled with our selections for Riverside’s 40th Anniversary season,” he said. “Great theater in a small town was the dream of Riverside’s founders four decades ago, and today, I can unequivocally say their dream came true. Nonprofit professional regional theaters were created as an alternative to the commercial ventures of Broadway and touring productions. “Riverside is a dynamic artistic enterprise that creates original versions of the shows we select for our stages. With highly talented staff of craftsmen, supported by the board of directors and administrators, each season we strive to progressively ‘raise the bar’ on the quality of the work our audiences have come to embrace.” The Riverside Theatre, located at 3250 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach, begins its 2013-2014 season on Oct. 29. Subscriptions are now available. For information on prices and subscription options, call the box office at (772) 231-6990. For additional information about the season, visit the website, www.RiversideTheatre.com.

from variety shows to murder mysteries. For an April 6 fundraiser for the Hobe Sound Animal Protection League, the performers staged “A Celebration of Cats.” Anna McNeely, who performed on Broadway in the original version of the hit show “Cats,” was guest artist. A fundraiser for the Rosann Gregory Cancer Foundation on April 13 featured the original musical “Murder at the Café Chat Noir,” written by Baker and composer Max Mercury. The core group is joined by a cadre of dancers, singers and actors including Betty Ann Dingman, Slade Walter, Josephine Lovaglia, Lance Holbrook, Chris Mazzella, Stacey Fox, Betty Dallas, Donna Verfaille, Gary Smith, Merilee Lawrence, Nick Wood, Jamie Gall and Beverly Westphal. When an event is scheduled, the group rehearses once a week, often at the clubhouse in the condominium community in Stuart where Baker lives. As an event nears, they rehearse more frequently. The group has put together a list of requirements for organizations wanting entertainment. No money changes hands. Everything is done on a volunteer basis. The group does not produce shows, advertise events or sell tickets.
All groups with 501(c)(3) charters are eligible. The performers do not pick and choose the groups they serve. AHA provides its own costumes, unless the group requires a specific theme. If specific costumes are required, the group asks that the organization provide them or provide a budget for them. For themed events that are not in the group’s repertoire, AHA requires from four to six weeks notice to write and rehearse new material. The performers can work on a stage or dance floor and only require “decent” lighting and an adequate sound system. They do reserve the right to examine the system. If necessary, the organization is asked to provide sufficient equipment. AHA requires that it be mentioned in any press releases about the event. For Gale Baker, it is all about giving back while doing something special. “The giving back is the biggest part, but you get a group of people who can give back with something they know how to do and enjoy doing.” Performers interested in working with Artists Helping All and non-profit groups interested in having event entertainment should contact Gale Baker at neongale@ gmail.com.

are Dental implants right for you?
Now, you have more options. Implant-retained dentures are permanent, and they look, feel, and function like natural teeth. You can smile and eat without fear of slippage. You can go to sleep at night and wake up in the morning with your teeth in place.
