ST. LUCIE COUNTY — After a brief hiatus from Fort Pierce, the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce administrative office has once again settled in the city of its birth. In a move to create easy access for businesses across the county, the Chamber relocated from its office of six years in St. Lucie West to a 3,800-squarefoot building on Midway Road in the Drawdy Brothers Construction Complex. Fort Pierce Mayor Linda Hudson said the move back is historic. “We’re delighted to have the Chamber back

End of the line for residents with pipe leaks No way to prevent problem, expert says By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer
nrodriguez@yourvoiceweekly.com
ST. LUCIE WEST — Copper experts say there are no early measures residents can take to prevent pipe leaks, a costly trend in St. Lucie West that began earlier this year. “There’s not much they can do,” Harold Moret, a project manager with the Sarasota-based Copper Development Association said. “The reason is that the flux has been there for so many years.” Moret, who recently met with officials from the St. Lucie West Services District to see what options residents have, said the problem likely stems from faulty installation. After an initial study revealed the district’s water was not corrosive, district manager Dennis Pickle commissioned the help of Ohio-based metal experts at Metallurgical Solutions Inc. A March study of seven pipe samples from The Vineyards, Lake Forest and the Cascades communities revealed chlorine was the corrosive agent. Each community’s developers, Hanover Homes, Homes by Kennedy and Levitt and Sons, respectively, are no longer in business. Chlorine could have originated from the flux used during instal-
lation of the water lines, Moret said, corroborating the test’s results. Flux is an oxidizing agent used on copper pipes before soldering. It helps clean the pipe and allows the solder to better adhere. The district has had close to 100 complaints of leaky pipes since the beginning of the year, which could total thousands of dollars in home damage and pipe repairs, Pickle said. The district serves approximately 7,000 customer properties with a population of 20,000. If installation wasn’t correctly performed, Pickle said leaks are imminent. “It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when,” Pickle said. Moret said the recent cases of copper leaks are not widespread across the state. The issue seems to be limited to certain communities depending on what companies provided installation services, Moret said. Much like finding a reliable auto repairman, the issue boils down to trust, Moret said. “You leave a lot to the plumber,” he said. “Find a plumber that is licensed and guarantees the work.” The Copper Development Association is a membership-based organization that offers engineering and information to copper producers. ST. LUCIE WEST — Retired minister Bob Carey moved to St. Lucie West just as the economy crumbled. “My sense of calling is to help those in need,” he said. “A friend of mine, Dave Landry, and I started thinking about what we could do to make a difference. We thought of a soup kitchen.” Carey was standing on the corner of Airoso and Prima Vista and saw four churches a block from where he was standing. “I walked into the Lutheran church and asked the minister, Dave Dangerfield, if he were interested. He made phone calls to the Methodist Church, the rabbi at the Temple and a few others. Within half an hour, we had seven different congregations that wanted to commit to starting a soup kitchen.” It took a few months to get things up and running, but by June 2009, they were ready. They named the kitchen Sarah’s Kitchen, after Abraham’s wife in the Book of Genesis. “It’s an interfaith organization,” Carey said. “Abraham is the icon and father of religions. Sarah is the matriarch.” Getting the kitchen going so quickly required a lot of cooperation. “It took a lot of coordination,” Carey said. “That’s the miracle of Sarah’s Kitchen. There’s no money leverage. All the workers are doing it for spiritual reasons. Everyone is a volunteer.” Sarah’s Kitchen served its first hot meal at the

Titans football preps for spring game By Patrick Bernadeau For Your Voice News & Views TREASURE COAST — As the days continue to drift away from winter and climb deeper into spring, high school football programs across the Treasure Coast have begun preparations for their respective spring games generally scheduled in late May. While teams in the area officially began practice on May 1, Treasure Coast High School football head coach Irvin Jones was unable to get a solid look at his team until nearly a week afterward. Jones was unavailable during some of the team’s off-season workouts as much of his time was spent as an assistant with the Lady Titans flag football team. In addition, three coaches on his staff traveled to Jacksonville with the Titans track team competing in the state finals held on May 4. Despite the team’s first real practice taking place five days after practices around the area opened, Jones is eager to get going. “It’s been a struggle with coaches in different sports,” Jones said. “The first few days

KITCHEN from page 5 First United Methodist Church in Port St. Lucie on June 1, 2009. They served 36 people. They now have four sites, 29 congregations and more than 600 volunteers. In 2012, they served more than 46,000 meals. The kitchens serve a great variety of foods. Ironically, they don’t serve soup. “We use the term ‘soup kitchen’ because it was the term that came out of the Depression that everyone recognized,” Carey said. “We don’t serve soup because we don’t want it spilled on a child.” They do serve everything from a Greek version of a shepherd’s pie to macaroni and cheese to their own specialty, macghetti, which is spaghetti with elbow macaroni. Some days there may be baked chicken or ham. The dinner is sit-down, with service as if it were a restaurant. “We serve a great variety of menus and balanced, nutritious meals,” Carey said. “There’s protein, carbohydrates, a vegetable or fruit and bread. It’s a healthy meal that guests will eat.” The four kitchens serve more than 1,100 meals a week to individuals and families who live below the poverty line, the mentally challenged, the disabled, the working poor, seniors on fixed incomes and the homeless. Some of the guests have lost jobs and homes in the economic downturn. Fully one-quarter of the clients are children. “I think about the fact that they are all struggling financially,” Carey said. “A free hot meal can get them through the week.” Volunteers are the lifeblood of the organization and new ones are always welcome. “(We welcome) anyone who feels they want
to serve,” Carey said. “I don’t question why people want to help other people. We have people from all different denominations and faiths. We don’t ask any questions. Martin Luther King said that everyone can be great because everyone can serve.” Sarah’s Kitchen has the following locations: First United Methodist Church: 260 S.W. Prima Vista Blvd., Port St. Lucie. Open Mondays from 5-6:30 p.m. First Congregational Church, 2401 S.E. Sidonia St., Port St. Lucie. Publisher Steve Erlanger is pleased to announce that Your Voice News & Views and Veteran Voice won 12 awards at the annual Community Papers of Florida conference held May 3-4 in Orlando. “It was a great showing at the 2013 CPF awards dinner (Friday) night. We were the eighth-most honored company in the state. Most of the seven that were above us (in number of awards) were weekly papers that are owned by larger media corporations. No other local news companies won more than we did. “We walked away with 12 awards, but keep in mind that we only had four months of papers to pull entries from. Imagine what we will do with 12 months’ of papers!” The breakdown went as follows: four first place, one second and seven third-place awards. Chief photographer Mitch Kloorfain was the big winner with three first places and one third. First place: Ad campaign, Martin County dentist Dr. Michael Sohl. Personal column, Mitch Kloorfain, “Here by a phone call, love and an adoption.” Original sports event

RUBIO from page 1 omy, Rubio said during the St. Lucie Republican Party’s annual Lincoln Day dinner at the Polish American Club in Port St. Lucie. Calling Republicans the “party of upward mobility,” Rubio said the political group consists of hard workers who are capable of the American dream if large government doesn’t stifle the process. Rubio commended the party for allowing small businesses to blossom. “If you are successful economically, if you are successful professionally, we celebrate it. We hold you up as an example and an inspiration,” Rubio said. “But for the most part, if you have made it, all you want government to do is basically leave you alone so you can continue to make it and help others make it, too.” Although he believes the war against terrorism will endure for generations, Rubio, who stressed the U.S. shouldn’t get involved in unnecessary conflicts, said the U.S. is the only country capable of one day stopping extremists. “We have got to be committed to win it, because there is still evil in the world and evil must be defeated,” Rubio said. “And the U.S. remains the only country on Earth with the ability and the willingness to call the evil for what it is, confront it and defeat it.” Before his speech, Rubio said he plans to make amendments to his immigration policy and begin to strengthen elements of the bill in question. Defending the bill, Rubio said it enforces entry and exit tracking, includes $5.5 billion in border security funding and puts illegal immigrants through a years-long rigorous process to obtain citizenship. “They’ll have to come forward. They’ll have to undergo a criminal background check, a national security background check,” Rubio said. “They have to pay a $2,000 fine and an application fee. They don’t qualify for any federal benefits. They only get the permit for six years. They have to come back and reapply and prove they’ve been paying taxes.” Rubio also dodged questions about a 2016 presidential run. “I have my hands full,” Rubio said. “I don’t have time for thinking about the future quite like that.” Attendee and Tradition resident Teri Pinney said although Rubio’s immigration reform isn’t perfect,

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com it’s a starting point. “He has developed at least a solution where others are full of criticism. I like that. That shows vision and that shows leadership.” Palm City resident Medora Reading said before Rubio’s speech she was concerned his immigration bill would grant immediate amnesty to the nation’s estimated 11 million illegal immigrants. “I didn’t know how I felt about that issue and he explained why we had to address it in a manner I understood. I didn’t understand it before,” Reading said. “... He made me realize we need to know who’s here, why they’re here and what they’re doing.” Ominous skies outside brightened by bolts of lightning didn’t deter a crowd from gathering on an aligning sidewalk to rally against Rubio’s proposed immigration reform. Jack Oliver, legislative director of the nonprofit corporation Floridians for Immigration Enforcement, disagrees with Rubio’s policy, claiming the senator misled constituents during his campaign leading up to his November 2010 victory. Oliver believes Rubio’s reform lacks backbone, making it too easy to gain citizenship. “When he was running for Senate, he promised there would be no legalization and now he’s trying to backtrack and redefine the word ‘amnesty,’” the Indiantown resident said. “It has nothing to do with the pathway to citizenship. It has nothing to do with green cards. It has to do with legalization. When you forgive the penalty of deportation, that’s amnesty.” Mexico City native Jaser Colin stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Oliver for a drastically different reason. The teen said Rubio is his only hope at becoming a citizen in the country he has called home since age 8. Current immigration policy is flawed and handles undocumented workers inhumanely, Colin said. “Illegals, as they choose to call them, get treated as if they weren’t people. They get mistreated,” the Fort Pierce resident said. “They don’t really come here for anything but work. That’s all they want to do.” “First of all, there are better jobs here. We can progress better. Right now I’m finishing high school and I’m going to college,” he said. “I couldn’t afford that in Mexico and I’m not getting it for free here. I have to work for it. And I’ve had to work all my life for it.”

ASK ThE DENTIST
Q- Why should I floss? A- Flossing removes bacterial plaque, that white sticky film that grows daily in all our mouths. Left unchecked, plaque can cause gum infection and/or cavities. Q- Why are my teeth getting shorter? A- Wear patterns are typical of an occlusion (bite) that is not protective and often in harmony with your own muscles. That often leads to clenching and grinding that shortens teeth.

In the team’s five victories, the Titans relinquished an average of 7.6 points per game. In the four losses, 31.5 points per game. Jones, a defensive-minded coach, would like to re-establish his team on the defensive end of the ball. “We want to get back to playing great defense again,” Jones said. “My whole philosophy and goal for this team is trying to get this team to play with a little more enthusiasm, meanness and toughness.” “On that side of the ball, we have young, athletic kids. We have a little bit of size, but [the coaches] have to develop them.” Every year, teams have to account for roster turnover. The Titans aren’t any different, losing starters on both sides of the ball, but none will be bigger than star cornerback Justin Williams, who will be playing at the next level at Michigan State University. Jones however is confident that his team, especially in secondary can recover. “For some reason with the sec-

Why do teens kill? Author answers question during Treasure Coast visit By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer
nrodriguez@yourvoiceweekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Television personality and three-time author Phil Chalmers delivered a sobering message to teens and their parents about the dangers of bullying and the repercussions of ignoring the warning signs of an aggressive youngster. Chalmers, an Ohio resident, has dedicated his life to exploring why teenagers resort to violence, commit crimes and kill. His work over the past 25 years includes appearances on E! Network shows “Billionaire Crime Scenes” and “Too Young To Kill” and Spike TV show “Don’t Be A Victim.” Chalmers said his current work will be featured on a new Biography Channel show called “Killer Teens,” set to air this fall. Chalmers, who calls himself
“America’s leading authority on juvenile homicide and juvenile mass murder,” said he’s interviewed more than 200 teen killers, school shooters and serial killers, including Charles Manson and Jonesboro school shooter Mitchell Johnson. Chalmers spoke at the Fenn Center in Fort Pierce last week at an event hosted by the county. Earlier that day, he provided presentations on Internet safety, suicide and school violence at Dan McCarty Middle School and Fort Pierce and Treasure Coast high schools. Chalmers, who displayed graphic crime scene photos to drive home his point, said bullying and school killings like the recent event in Newtown, Conn., in which a 20-year-old man shot and killed 26, are preventable. “Parents should look for the

CHAMBER from page 1 here in Fort Pierce,” Hudson said. “… Symbolically, it’s wonderful to have it back.” The Chamber’s long history dates back to 1906, when it began as the local board of trade and donned the name The Fort Pierce-St. Lucie County Chamber. In 1977, a modern-day office was constructed on land owned by the city of Fort Pierce on Virginia Avenue next to the County Administration Complex, according to the Chamber’s website at stluciechamber.org. Over the following decades, the chamber merged with Greater Port St. Lucie Chamber of Commerce and the economic development

SLC Fire District dispenses free smoke detectors By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer
nrodriguez@yourvoiceweekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — In the occurrence of a fire, a smoke detector with a pair of working batteries can mean the difference between life and death. Last week the St. Lucie County Fire District, along with the 211 Call Center launched a program to install 3,206 of the lifesaving detectors in St. Lucie County residences who are either lacking the device or cannot afford one. Although house fires are most commonly associated with winter when candles are lit and space heaters provide a source of comfort, Deputy Chief Brian Blizzard said the danger of a blaze is always imminent. “The threat of fire is ever-present,” Blizzard said. “The smoke detector program had been in the works for over a year now.” The campaign is funded by a federal grant at no cost to participants, Blizzard said. St. Lucie County residents can call the 211 Call Center to arrange for a smoke detector. The Call Center will gather contact information for fire district firefighters, who will arrange a time to meet the resident and install the smoke detector, Blizzard said. The devices, manufactured by IoPhic from Universal Security Instruments, come equipped with a long-lasting lithium battery, a feature that will save lives, Blizzard said. “The nice thing about the detectors we’re offering is that they feature a 10-year lithium battery,” said Blizzard, who recommends residents check older model batteries when daylight

saving time begins and ends. “That means you don’t have to inspect the batteries, change batteries or check batteries for up to 10 years.” “That provides a critical advantage over any other smoke detector that’s out there.” Last year, the fire district had approximately 40,000 emergency responses. Roughly 4,500 of those were fire-related. A number of the callers didn’t own detectors or neglected the device’s batteries, Blizzard said. “It’s critically important that residents check their current smoke detectors to make sure the batteries are in place that it’s installed correctly and that it’s operational,” he said. If a resident is physically unable to check their device’s batteries, the fire district is offering a solution. In areas like St. Lucie West and Tradition, which are heavily populated by senior citizens in retirement communities, help will be provided, Blizzard said. “If they’re able to do it themselves in a safe manner, that would be ideal, or if they have friends and family members that can come over and do it, that would be fantastic,” Blizzard said. “However, if none of those are available, we certainly can have our firefighters at the local fire station go by and check their smoke detectors for them.” Of the thousands of units available, 200 are equipped for residents who are deaf or hard of hearing. The Rev. Hugh Curran of the Port St. Lucie-based Treasure Coast Deaf Church said the district’s assistance is much needed for individuals who suffer from

Port St. Lucie Mayor JoAnn Faiella presented Cox with a congratulatory certificate during the grand opening. “The city supports the chambers because they’re such an integral part of small businesses,” Faiella said. “It’s awesome work that they do.” The Chamber plans to revert to its original telephone number, (772) 595-9999, but will continue to use its current number, (772) 340-1333, for at least a year, Cox said. The not-forprofit organization is funded by membership dues and special events. It aims to promote and support local business.
so we’re getting visitors finding us,” Cox said. “Everybody realized we’re a countywide chamber, so it’s very important that we’re centrally located. I think everybody is happy.” Port St. Lucie insurance agent Michelle Miller explored the new location, marveling at the Chamber’s use of the space. “I think it’s a great location, I think it’s a great facility,” she said. “There’s plenty of room to expand and continue to grow the Chamber.”

hearing loss. Curran said the special devices are often pricey. “I think it’s great because it’s very expensive. There’s no current state or federal assistance for these individuals,” Curran said. “The only thing you can get for free in the state of Florida is (an amplified) telephone.” Curran said a single unit can cost upwards of $100 or more. “For our population who is normally underemployed, unemployed or on disability, 100 bucks is tough,” he said. “Plus having to have an electrician come out to the house to install
it can be very expensive. But it’s a necessity of life. How do you deal without it?” Call 211 to arrange for the St. Lucie County Fire District to install a smoke detector. St. Lucie West and Tradition residents who need assistance checking batteries in existing units can call their nearest firehouse, listed below.

May is National Foster Care Month For Your Voice News & Views TREASURE COAST — May is National Foster Care Month! During this time, Hibiscus Children’s Center would like to extend special recognition and thanks to all the wonderful, selfless families and single parents that come forward and provide loving homes for abused, abandoned and neglected children here on the Treasure Coast. The number of abused children in our community continues to grow, and they desperately need caring foster and/or adoptive parents to take them into their hearts and homes. Our faltering economy and poverty at a level we haven’t seen in decades is making it even more difficult for families to care for their own children. Children have profound losses when they come into foster care; they have lost their sense of safety, their family, their possessions, their community, and
their sense of self. They need a sense of normalcy and an overwhelming outpouring of love and nurturing. Foster parents provide a loving, safe and nurturing haven for these children and help them begin the process of healing and instill in the children a sense of value and security. Foster parents make all the difference in these children’s lives and make a significant impact on their future. We are truly grateful to these incredible families and individuals who have made children a priority in their communities and in their lives. FOSTER from page 21 ties. It operates a shelter in Jensen Beach and a village of group homes in Vero Beach. Hibiscus addresses the problem of abuse, abandonment and neglect, throughout the Treasure Coast, with an expanded Foster Care Program, mental health and substance abuse services, a prevention program to support families in crisis, and services to reduce the number of families entering the dependency court system. The Hibiscus Children’s Center Thrift Store, in Jensen Beach, was opened in 1997. All proceeds from the thrift store are used to offset costs for children’s programs. The children’s shelter, group homes and Foster programs are funded, in part, by United for Families. An additional $1.5 million must be raised, each year, by the Hibiscus annual campaign, special events, through foundations and local grants to meet overall children’s needs. Hibiscus is also a United Way affiliated organization. Hibiscus speakers are available to present to your group or organization. New play explores women pilots in WWII By Shelley Koppel Staff writer

FORT PIERCE — In 2012, when Meredith Dayna Levy was a senior at Hollins College in Virginia, she submitted the play, “Decision Height” as her Honors Thesis. The play tells the true story of six women volunteers in the Women Airforce Service Pilots program who shuttled planes to airbases in the United States and Britain during WWII. It takes place at the airfield in Sweetwater, Texas, where the women were being trained, and it explores their lives and what motivated them to fly. David Moberg, director of Indian River
State College’s Performing and Visual Arts department and a playwright himself, has selected “Decision Height” as part of the McAlpin Onstage Summer Program. It will be presented May 2325 at the Wynne Black Box Theatre. Moberg serves as the regional point person for the New Plays Project of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. He sees many of the plays registered for the Festival. “It was produced at Hollins and I saw it there,” he said. “It won an award. I heard another reading of it and talked to the playwright, I said we’d like to work with it and she was thrilled. It worked out well for both of us.”
Indian River State College will present Meredith Dayna Levy’s 2012 play “Decision Height,” from May 23-25. It tells the story of the Women Air Force Service Pilots program during WWII and was written as an Honors Thesis at Hollins College in Virginia.

Moberg said that Levy wanted to write a play about the camaraderie among a group of women. “She attended Hollins, an allgirls school,” he said. “It was extremely meaningful and she wanted to write a play that allowed her to encapsulate that experience. While doing her research, she came upon the story of these women pilots. It was a way of capturing the feeling (of camaraderie.) The play is historically accurate in terms of detail, although the characters are fictionalized.” The all-female cast includes Emily Norcia, Kelly Fischer, Michelle Lucey, Shannon Maloney, Lindsey Mercado, Hannah Williams, Marisa Quijano, Jessica Lesko and Gabriella Rojas. Moberg sees a bright future for the young playwright, who is in the graduate program in playwriting at Hollins. “She’s done a super job,” he said. “It’s been through 10-12 drafts. It’s just a good show. Her mentor at Hollins runs one of the only Master of Fine Arts programs in playwright-
