All Aboard Florida gets another go from railroad administration

David Brown of St. Lucie West joined forces with other members of the astronomy club at Indian River State College to watch a rare celestial occurrence of the planet Mercury in transit across the sun Monday, May 9. The club meets on the last Tuesday of each month at IRSC in Fort Pierce. ‘We encourage even people without telescopes to come even if only with a passing interest,’Brown said when reflecting on he got involved through his own passing interest.

TREASURE COAST — All Aboard Florida is calling it a “significant step,” but opponents question how far down the tracks it gets the proposed high-speed passenger train. “Today we have achieved another significant step towards the completion of our project,” the company said in a press release. “Consistent with our initial commitment to the Treasure Coast, we provided final engineering plans that included safety improvements for (Federal Railway Administration’s) review. The agency has now completed its review of our plans for Palm Beach, Martin, St.

ST. LUCIE WEST — In 2015, it was reported that 1 in 68 children in the U.S. had been diagnosed with autism. According to The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the numbers have been on the rise.

In 2000, the CDC reported that out of 356,000 disabled children nationwide, 4,473 of them were identified as autistic. In an updated report in 2015, that number grew to 28,064 for the same age group. This is more than a 527 percent increase in the last 15 years, bringing the autistic population to 7.9 percent of overall disabled children in the nation. These staggering numbers show

the sheer need for local support for families and their children. Jessica McLaughlin, a St. Lucie West mom, shared the story of her 14-year old daughter, Alexandria. “She developed normally the first year, reaching all her milestones such as sitting, crawling and walking on time. Her father and I noticed she was a bit different around a year and a half.” “After hearing tests and other

behavioral exams, she was diagnosed with ASD when she was almost 3,” McLaughlin said. Alexandria is on the severe end of the spectrum and is non-verbal. After the diagnosis, she received home therapies that lasted until she was 3. Now in a St. Lucie County school, Alexandria is in self-contained classes.

New athletic director eager to rejoin the Eagles Adam Laten Wilson

ST. LUCIE WEST — Spring is a time for new beginnings, and this particular spring marks a special beginning for two revered St. Lucie high school coaches. Earlier this year, John Messina, who has been the athletic director at St. Lucie Centennial High School for more than 15 years, announced that he will be retiring at the end of the school year. After 44 years of dedicated instruction and guidance, an impressive track record that touts five state wins for Centennial’s baseball team, and a place in the Florida High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, it will undoubtedly be difficult to lose him. Centennial could not ask for a more fitting successor, however. Newcomer Steve Ripley, who has been coaching in private and public schools all over South Florida for 40 years and who has spent the last eight years as the very well-respected athletic director at John Carroll Catholic School in Fort Pierce, will be taking Messina’s place at the helm of the program. Ripley is a player’s coach, who not only appreciates the discipline

As I get to learn more about the school, that’s something I’ll be able to work on.”

This is not Ripley’s first foray at Centennial. Eight years ago, before joining the Rams as fulltime director, he spent time with the Eagles, coaching boys’ basketball and teaching math at the St.

and instruction that young athletes need for success on the field, but also understands the personal relationships he must help forge so that they will be prepared for the next step. “My goal is to help put the students in a position to be as competitive as possible as high school athletes,” he says. “I wouldn’t ask of them anything more than what I would put in myself,” he said. Ripley is excited for the new adventure in his career. “I’m really excited about the challenge of going from a 400 student population to 2500 student population. I’ve always been one to go after challenges, and I’m excited about this one. I’ve been at this a long time, and this is a good time in my life to meet this type of challenge. I’m going to miss John Carroll tremendously. It’s a great place. I’ve built great relationships there that will continue with me. Great people there, great coaches, and great human beings.” Looking forward to next year, Ripley has already started to meet with his future colleagues and parents, and last month attended early practice for the football season that will launch next fall. It’s still too early to tell how Ripley can best serve Centennial’s athletic program. “On every campus, we all want good student

ST. LUCIE WEST — Amidst a crowd of more than 200 St. Lucie County business, community, educational and government leaders, the Economic Development Council of St. Lucie County (EDC) announced Michael D. Minton, as the recipient of the prestigious Pete Hegener Leadership Award during the EDC’s 4th Annual Leadership Dinner on April 28 at Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club. Minton, a shareholder at Dean, Mead, Minton & Zwemer, received the award for his dedication and contribution to the economy and quality of life in St. Lucie County. “Not only did Michael help create jobs when he opened the Treasure Coast office of his law firm but he embodies the spirit shared in Pete Hegener’s vision

for the development of St. Lucie County,” said Mark Robitaille, CEO of Martin Health System, and recipient of the last year’s Leadership Award. Robitaille presented the award along with EDC Chair Ed Massey, Ph.D, and President of Indian River State College. “There is no better way to honor the legacy of our friend, Pete Hegener, than by realizing a vibrant and sustainable economy for St. Lucie County,” said Massey. Minton has had many notable accomplishments over the years. He helped to establish Main Street Fort Pierce, helped save and restore the historic Sunrise Theatre and was a driving force behind the Manatee Observation and Education Center. While president of the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce, he was awarded the Martin

t’s an honor and privilege to pay tribute to Theodore “Ted” Wilson, a partner in Your Voice News & Views and publisher of Veteran Voice, having worked with him for more than two years. He passed away on April 28 after a valiant fight against cancer. He was more than just a boss. An accountant by profession, Ted called himself a “numbers cruncher,” but he had many talents. Together with his colleagues Sharon Elkins and Steve Erlanger, he took the plunge into publishing — and excelled. Your Voice News & Views (and later Veteran Voice) came to life in a time when print media was going into decline. But the idea behind it proved to be pure gold — a hyper-local weekly newspaper targeted to meet the unique needs of particular communities. Arriving directly into thousands of mailboxes, our newspapers give readers a wealth of information they can only find in our pages — county and city council decisions, health and safety alerts and the best places to eat and be entertained, among so much more. For advertisers, our newspapers provide a guaranteed market. Many of them rely on us exclu-

sively — virtually all will tell you advertising with us brings great results. Many readers tell us they count on the ads to help them make their buying deMary Kemper cisions. This was the vision Ted shared with Sharon and Steve — which included Veteran Voice. Sharon’s husband is a Marine Corps veteran, and it didn’t need much persuasion to convince Ted that a “niche” publication just for veterans would serve an important role in getting out military-related information. Veteran Voice became a labor of love. Ted hired me at a low point in my life — my husband had passed away only two months previously. A lifelong journalist, I had no experience in marketing — the “other half” of my job — but Ted

seem to have nothing better to do than to continuously make false allegations, cast aspersions, spread doubt, disillusionment, rumor and innuendo about the ethics and conduct of our Homeowner’s Association, members of the Board and our residential property managers. It is one thing to air one’s grievances at a board meeting or through the procedures and protocols set up by our Association’s by-laws; quite another to bring them to the news media and the government of the City of Port St. Lucie. It is they who waste the City’s time and taxpayers’ money. While we cannot address the specific allegations and concerns that are written about in your May 6 issue, we can say that this is just the most recent in a series

of baseless claims and misinformation that Messrs. Pritchard and Knoll like to spread beyond the Cascades to the general public. Your paper has certainly given them the voice and the platform that they so desperately crave. Thus far, not one of their claims has been proven to be factual or true. Obviously taking from the “Donald Trump Playbook,” they will throw anything out there to see what sticks. If they are so unhappy here and disappointed in our community and the way it is governed, they can certainly move somewhere else. The gates will quickly swing closed as they exit. NAMI hosts discussion to mark Mental Health Awareness Month Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The National Alliance on Mental Health of St. Lucie County, NAMI, wants families to know what’ll happen if they call 911. On Wednesday, May 11, the local mental-health education organization hosted a panel discussion about what happens when local police are called in. The discussion fell after press time, but before publication. “People are hesitant to call 911 on a loved one,” Nancy Swanson, president, said before the panel discussion. “This will tell them what will happen, what will happen if that person is Baker Acted to a facility.” Baker Act is shorthand for the Florida Mental Health Act of 1971 which permits law-enforcement officers to transport subjects they feel could be a threat to themselves or others to desig-

nated mental-health facilities for evaluation and possible reference to civil court for involuntary treatment. Swanson said too often families with a member with mental illnesses suffer alone and silently. That, she said, often proliferates and exasperates the loved ones’ problems. As the problems worsen, families often feel increasingly trapped. “It’s hard to deal with,” Swanson said. “You don’t want to see your son or daughter go to jail, but sometimes that’s the only place they can go.” According to the alliance, half of chronic mental illnesses start showing themselves by the time children are 14. By age 24 about 75 percent have started to show. However, it’s often years or decades before those with mental illnesses seek help. That, Swanson said, is why it’s important for families to act even if it’s uncom-

WILSON from page A6 took a chance on me. From the beginning, Ted made it a job about which can truly be said: “You mean, I actually get paid to do this?” He was patient and kind, and encouraged me to always try harder, with his unique, dry sense of humor. Far from sitting in some ivory tower far away, Ted enjoyed “getting his hands dirty” at many, many events we attended to add new subscribers to the Veteran Voice rolls. I’ll never forget “walking the flight line” at air shows

with Ted handing out special complimentary copies of our paper, hour after hour. He’d make conversation with each person, getting veterans to share their stories, and he shook hundreds of hands. He was a real patriot, and it showed. He treated me and others on staff to many dinner meetings, allowing us to “vent” to our heart’s desire on just about anything. He brought me into the 21st century by buying me my first “smart phone.” When pondering the choices for a case for the new device, our director of operations, Phil Galdys, half-jokingly observed to Ted that he was “reckless” for

You’d never know he was past 70. Those of us many years younger are lucky to have half his energy. Others have their own memories of Ted, but I’ll always remember his twinkling eyes and infectious grin — his kindness and willingness to bend over backwards to help anyone who needed it — his quiet, quirky, understated leadership, that made working for him such a pleasure. But as you once said to me, we never know when it’s our time, and we have to make the most of things while we’re here. Wherever you are, keep an eye on us, won’t you? They just don’t

Mental illness ranges from mild depressions to severe affective disorders. Audit earns perfect score for St. Lucie County Clerk’s Office FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The St. Lucie County Clerk’s office recently received a perfect score on its passport audit conducted by the U.S. Department of State. The audit reviews the way the Clerk accepts and processes passports to ensure compliance with procedures and eliminate opportunities for fraud. During the audit, a deputy clerk is followed through the process to confirm if the customer’s photograph, identification, and citizenship were properly verified. Auditors also make sure that the customer’s personal information is kept confidential, even from other deputy clerks. “At the Clerk’s office, we handle very sensitive data, such as Social Security numbers and victim information,” said Joseph E. Smith, St. Lucie County Clerk of the Circuit Court. “In addition to any procedures required by the Department of State, we have also implemented numerous

policies designed to protect the confidentiality of our customers.” The perfect audit score comes during the peak of passport season. In March, the Clerk’s office processed 771 applications, more than any month since records began to be kept five years ago. In April, there were 695 passports processed, the second highest on record. Passports applications have been higher than normal in 2016 due to an increase in applications 10 years ago, which are now expiring. The heightened demand is expect to continue through 2018 and may extend processing times, which are currently four to six weeks. There has been a 34 percent increase in applications so far this year. The Clerk’s office processes passport applications at its St. Lucie West and downtown Fort Pierce offices. Lucie West high school for a year. Many of the staff already know him, and look forward to their reaquaintance. “As an athletic director, you see what he’s done for John Carroll,” says Fred Almade, assisstant baseball coach and guidance counselor at Centennial, who has known Ripley for about 20 years. “Their athletic program has been very good for the last 10 years. He’s always had very good and disciplined team,” he said. “From a coaching standpoint you want to see hardworking kids as well as good sportsmanship, and those aspects come out of his direction.” Almade describes Ripley as “athletic- and school-supportive, firm and hard, yet fair, always trying to do the best for the school he represents.” Ripley got his start at St. Rose of Lima in Miami, while still in college. There he coached basketball, baseball, and girls’ softball. While basketball has always been his sole passion, and baseball his forte, it was this first experience at St. Rose that cemented his love for coaching. In 1982, when he and his wife had their first child, they decided to relocate to the Treasure Coast. He soon got a job coaching basketball at John Carroll which was to prove so successful that he returned in 2001 as asst. athletic director and again in 2008 as full-time director, after his yearlong stint at Centennial. He has also served as program director at YMCA of St. Lucie, and was head coach for women’s basketball and volleyball at IRSC for five years. Ripley is a very hands-on, detail-oriented coach with years of experience, says Jimmy Hebb Jr., head boys’ basketball coach at John Carroll. Hebb has known Ripley since about age 12, when Ripley coached his summer basketball camp. Now, Hebb says he couldn’t hope for a better athletic director. “He’s been the best athletic director I’ve known in my 16 years of coaching,” he said. “He’s always supported me in coaching. He’s

always there to talk strategy. He always makes himself available.” Students see the experience that Ripley brings to the table and respect and respond to him well, says Hebb. “I’ve seen him talk to my kids before about what would help us in the game. Maybe he’ll see something that I don’t, and I’ve actually had him come in and help with practice several times. The kids respond to him well and listen to him. It’s not like this is some guy who’s never done anything before. They know he knows what he doing. I love having him there.” At John Carroll, Ripley has been instrumental in contributing to the great success of their 23 sports programs. Their softball team will be entering the state semifinals soon, and the boy’s track team has won four district championships in a row. John Carroll is also the only high school in the county that includes lacrosse within its program. Nearly 85 percent of students participate in sports at John Carroll, says principal Ben Hopper. “That’s a pretty high number to juggle and balance, and Steve has done a very good job with that. I expect that he will carry a lot of his ideas and vision over to Centennial.” While the program at John Carroll is very strong and has been for years, Hopper says that Ripley has done a good job of adapting to the legacy and helping carry it forward. He says that the strong communication and organization within the athletic program is in part a testament to Ripley’s skills as director. Centennial’s athletic program is primed to receive the attentive care and supervision that Ripley has demonstrated over his career. “We have a lot of good coaches at Centennial right now,” says Amade. “Mr. Messina did an excellent job, and he was there for a long time. And now with Ripley coming in, we can take it one step further. He will enhance what we have and hopefully follow what Messina did and keep the tradition going.”

Luther King Jr. Award for increasing employment as part of the successful multi-year effort he chaired to relocate the USDA ARS Lab from Orlando to St. Lucie County. Minton also has spearheaded several efforts to enhance education on the Treasure Coast. He has served as Vice Chair of the South Florida Water Management District and has dedicated himself to advancing several projects to divert stormwater to stop harmful discharges in the Indian River Lagoon. He is currently Chair of the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Foundation. “We derive so much from the community, its’ important to give back,” said Minton. “You want others to appreciate your integrity, your intelligence, and the fact that you are committed to persevere to achieve your goals and objectives. I am not afraid of failure because if you don’t try, you’ll never know if you can succeed.” This year, eleven well-known and highly respected leaders throughout St. Lucie County were nominated for the Pete Hegener Leadership Award by EDC members and investors. From that group, the selection commit-

tee chose three finalists which included Minton as well as Kathryn Hensley, St. Lucie County School Board Member and Ken Pruitt, St. Lucie County Property Appraiser. “While very different in terms of their roles within the community, each one — Michael Minton, Kathryn Hensley and Ken Pruitt — embody the attributes of the Leadership Award and have all made significant achievements that have improved St. Lucie County. They are all trusted role models in our community and visionaries in their own right, inspiring others with their enthusiasm and dedication to improving St. Lucie County,” said Robitaille. Sponsors of the EDC Leadership Dinner were: Florida Power & Light Company, Title Sponsor; AT&T Florida; Bank of America; CenterState Bank; Dean, Mead, Minton & Zwemer; Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Foundation; Hilton Garden Inn; Indian River State College; Keiser University; Martin Health System; PGA Golf Club; Seacoast Bank; St. Lucie News Tribune/ TCPalm and St. Lucie Public Schools. Storm water seems to magically disappear from the roads in St. Lucie West. But it’s not magic — it’s infrastructure. Turning on a faucet in, say, Lake Forest Pointe activates another huge infrastructure that costs millions to build, maintain and run. ST. LUCIE WEST — They’re boxy, they’re green, they’re getting negative attention, and they’re making the water better. They’re automatic potable water flushing devices. At the St. Lucie West Services District’s Board of Supervisors last regular meeting — Tuesday, May 3 — Dennis Pickle, manager and utilities director, said new flushing systems that are mostly on cul-de-sacs have generated phone calls. “We’re getting a few complaints they’re ugly,” Pickle said at the meeting. The new flushing systems are in enclosures made by Channell Corporation. They’re about 28 by 18 inches, and about 15 inches tall. Pickle said the district picked green rather than the conventional potable-water indicator of blue, so the boxes would be better camouflaged. Still, they are hard to miss. But, the flushing devices aren’t just generating

complaints. “We’re getting word the water tastes better,” Pickle said at the meeting. In a phone interview, Pickle said water taste is largely subjective and the flushing system isn’t for pleasing the palate. But, he said, if folks like the water better, the district is pleased. The new flushing systems are increasing the quality of the water, however. At the meeting and in the interview, Pickle said when waterlines were laid in St. Lucie West some were dead-ends, lines that don’t loop to others. “When you have a looped system you typically don’t have a line where water can build up and get stagnate,” Pickle said. Because waterlines are perpetually pressurized, water can sit in dead-end lines indefinitely. That’s especially so in St. Lucie

CareerSource Research Coast announces ‘Road to Employment’ workshop FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — CareerSource Research Coast, the local workforce development agency, announces a new workshop for career seekers across Indian River, Martin and St. Lucie counties. The one-hour workshop, “Road to Employment,” is being offered daily at each Career Center located throughout the Research Coast beginning Monday, May 9, 2016. “The job search process can be quite intimidating if it is your first time or if you haven’t been in the job market for a while,” said Tracey McMorris, Director of Field Operations. “The goal of the Road to Employment workshop is to provide a quick overview of the process, some do’s and don’ts and a refresher on what our organization can do to assist.” The “Road to Employment” focuses on the approach to job seeking, key elements of a resume, community resources, training opportunities and spe-

cific programs offered by CareerSource Research Coast. “If a career seeker only has 15 seconds to make a great first impression, we want to do our part to ensure that 15 seconds is their best ever,” McMorris said. Like all services provided by CareerSource Research Coast, this workshop is provided at no cost. “Road to Employment” is offered daily during the following: Port St. Lucie Career Center 584 NW University Boulevard, Suite 300. McLaughlin, a teacher at West Gate K-8, has always been involved in the Walk for Autism Speaks. Four years ago the elementary school started a team that raised several hundred dollars for the walk; however, they received word the walk was cancelled. The plan was to absorb the Treasure Coast fundraiser into the Palm Beach Walk or the Orlando walk. McLaughlin and Valentina Whyte, co-chair of the team, didn’t accept that answer. After several calls to Autism Speaks, they were given permission to start a community walk. Raising money to pay for everything from the field to the entertainment, McLaughlin and Whyte came up with the funds with assistance from a 20K grant from Jake Owen. The end result from their diligent efforts brought in more than $30,000 and about 600 walkers. Autism Speaks took notice of the demand for a Treasure Coast Walk and named McLaughlin and Whyte co-chairs. Since then, they have raised more than $100,000 and welcomed more than 2,000 walkers at this year’s event, which took place in Tradition on April 2. There is help for families of children with Autism. The Easter Seals of Port St. Lucie offers early intervention support through their Treasure Coast Early Steps (TCES) program, available to children from birth to 36 months who have been identified with a disability or developmental delays. The program generally involves practitioners visiting the infants’ homes and helping with occupational and physical therapy as well as speech therapy. Another local entity providing support to Port St. Lucie is FAU, which offers the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD). “The CARD mission is to provide support and assistance with the goal of optimizing the potential of people with autism and related disabilities,” according to coe. fau.edu. They offer consultation and support through a network of

schools and community agencies, while helping parents and education professionals learn more about how to respond to spectrum children. At the beginning of 2016, FAU hosted an Autism Speakers Series throughout the schools’ various locations. Locally, famous author David J. Finch spoke about the book he wrote, “The Journal of Best Practices; A Memoir of Marriage, Asperger Syndrome, and one Man’s Quest to be a Better Husband.” During his speech to parents and some local teens, Finch said, when attending public school, he was “first diagnosed as twice exceptionally gifted.” He recollected his hypersensitivity to the classroom environment and sounds. Finch went on to say there is not a lot of education about autism spectrum disorder or autism in general. “During diagnostic meetings they don’t tell you that it is great news,” he noted. “(People on the spectrum can have) laser focused minds and can be an expert in specific areas. We should nurture the disciplines they love, then you will have the equivalent of Einstein.” The need for more education, information, treatment and assistance is long overdue but with the perseverance of people like McLaughlin and Whyte, who didn’t take ‘no’ for an answer — a sunnier outcome is possible. McLaughlin gives this advice for people who are coping with a child on the spectrum: “Take it one day at a time. Sometimes it’s the little things, like trying a new food or saying one word that is as incredible as a neuro-normal parent’s child hitting a home run or making the honor roll.” She went on to say, “My daughter is my sunshine. A bright light in my life that nothing can compare to. It’s difficult at times. Sometimes I choke, but I always love her and I always keep going.” For more information about programs and services visit autismspeaks.org, easterseals.com, and coe.fau.edu.

West, because many residents are seasonal and not around to, say, take showers part of the year. Every use helps move the water. “What we’ve been doing in the past is going out there every quarter and flushing (dead-end lines) by hand,” Pickle said in the interview. The flushing systems are increasing the line flushing, and reducing the labor time doing it. “You just go by periodically and check on it to see that it’s doing what it’s supposed to be doing,” Pickle said. The flushing systems are battery operated. Pickle said they’ll last about a year each. They’re set up to flush weekly in early morning hours. For example, one at 571 Sanctuary Drive will flush at 3:30 a.m. Some will flush at 3 a.m., such as on at 340 N.W. Millpond Cove. Most will flush at 4 and 4:30 a.m. About a dozen of the flushing devices have been set up so far, and more will follow. There is a downside — the flushes are set up on timers that don’t pay attention to weather conditions. Pickle said at the meeting there’s likelihood that the flushers will sometimes do their thing during storms. He

doesn’t’ anticipate that would be much noticed. But, people are noticing the flushers, and some find them aesthetically displeasing. Pickle said he hopes that the district’s customers who see them as monstrosities will see the beauty in the beasts. “To me it’s not that ugly and it provides a valuable tool to keep our man hours in other places,” Pickle said. Meaning the district has one less expense to add to the chances it can go more fiscal years without raising utility rates. There hasn’t been a rate increase from the district since 2010. The district is a Community Development District, which is a hybrid creation of the State Legislature. The districts operate as governmental bodies to deliver some municipal services, such as water and sewer. It doesn’t gain any revenue from property taxes, although some assessments to pay debt on certain projects are paid along with property taxes. The St. Lucie West Services District handles water, sewer and storm-water management for St. Lucie West’s residential and commercial areas. He said Fort Pierce is a likely stop for a future local run. Durham said one of the lingering issues All Aboard Florida has to deal with is crossings with adjacent sidewalks. The FRA is requiring All Aboard to pay for sealing those crossings. Durham said a remaining sticking point is who’ll pay for maintaining the new safety infrastructure — the company or counties. “There’s still some pedestrian areas we need to address, and social justice issues,” Durham said. “We’ve still got to discuss the cost of these issues.” Martin County has two lawsuits going in efforts to close the tracks to All Aboard Florida. One is against the federal Department of Transportation, and the other against the Florida Development Finance Corporation. In both cases the county is raising issues about the issuance of private activity bonds, a hybrid tax-exempt bond governments allow to encourage private construction of traditionally government infrastructure. All Aboard opponent K.C. Traylor — co-founder of Florida Not All Aboard — said selling the bonds seems to be the break in the company’s tracks. She said apparent lackluster investor interest might

achieve the opponents’ victory for them. “We feel confident that (All Aboard Florida) can trumpet all they want, but they still have to raise $2 billion,” she said. Traylor added, “Like anything, it comes down to money. As long as that money is not raised we feel we have a very good chance we’ll prevail.” In the press release, the company said it’ll start service in the middle of 2017. That will start with a Miami to West Palm Beach run. Company officials have repeatedly estimated that the high-speed passenger rail will reach Orlando about a year after starting the South Florida run.

Martin County Attorney, Michael Durham, said don’t book passage quite yet — he’s read the FRA’s letter. “They’re trumpeting a win, but there’s certainly more work to do,” Durham said. A company official speaking on background said All Aboard Florida, which also goes by the name Brightline, has met with counties’ engineering staffs for about two years going over railroad crossings. The passenger rail proposes to go through urban areas much faster than freight trains now using the same tracks. The company has submitted engineering plans for increasing safety at the crossings to the FRA, the counties responded, and they’ve been modified. The official said counties and the Florida Department of Transportation get another chance to comment to the FRA about proposed crossing upgrades. All Aboard Florida aims to run 32 trips a day from Miami to Orlando. The company has no stops planned for the Treasure Coast. However, the company official said in previous interviews, the compa-

New principal welcomes challenges Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

TRADITION — Kathleen Perez, the newly-named principal of Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition, has spent her entire career in St. Lucie County. The Boston native began teaching kindergarten here in 1989 and spent 18 years in the classroom and six years as administrator, the past six as an assistant principal at Palm Pointe. Perez began her career teaching kindergarten because she loved helping to mold the youngest minds. “I love children and giving them strong foundational skills,” she said. “I taught and never thought

I’d leave teaching.” Perez eventually taught every elementary grade and did some middle school teaching. Then she began to look forward to a new challenge. “Change is something I’m used to and welcome,” she said. “I wanted to learn more and had a desire to grow and learn. (Leaving teaching) was a hard decision, but I found myself having schoolbased leadership roles, including working on grants, as a technology specialist and in staff development, The principal at the time nurtured that and I realized I wanted to make a change and try something new.” Perez received a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Florida Atlantic University.

Mows-Mows

I am just an adorably playful cat that wants nothing but the love of a human touch. I will attach myself to you at the hip and be your best friend forever. I enjoy cat towers, playing with toys, and nice and relaxing Sunday afternoons. I do play well with young children and other cats.

Brownie

I am an 8 year old Chihuahua who was found looking for a family to love me. I am a loyal dog who enjoys short leash walks and then coming in and falling asleep in your lap. I would very much wish for a family who could spend lots of time with, but don’t worry if you have errands to run I will guard the house! If you are interested in Brownie, Mows-Mows or any of their furry friends please stop by the Humane Society of St. Lucie County’s two locations at 100 Savannah Rd. in Fort Pierce or 8890 NW Glades Cut-off Rd. in Port St. Lucie

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Indian River State College security member Jimmy Aikens couldn’t insult astronomy club member Bob Rogers by turning down his invitation to view the rare daytime celestial event of Mercury in transit across the Sun Monday, May 9 at IRSC in Fort Pierce.

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Jon Bell, director of the Hallstrom Planetarium at Indian River State College, explained how the transit of Mercury across the Sun was being projected through the eyepiece of a portable reflector telescope. The celestial event took place for seven hours Monday, May 9 where members of the astronomy club at IRSC met to watch a rare celestial occurrence. The transit takes place about 14 times in a 100 year period.

“We have student teachers from Florida Atlantic and IRSC and who come for their pre-service experiences. We are also a demo site for best teaching practices and people come from the county, state, nation and internationally. We have a partnership with schools in China.”

PRINCIPAL from page A21 “If you asked me when I began, if I’d want to go into leadership, I would have said ‘no,’” she said. “You realize you can effect change on a bigger scale. I’m always looking for new experiences. It was a struggle to decide whether to leave the classroom. Once I learned about being an instructional leader, I realized that was the direction.” Perez takes the helm of a public charter lab school with a partnership with Florida Atlantic University and St. Lucie Public Schools. The kindergarten-through eighth grade school has a three-fold mission of being a demonstration site for teacher education and best practices and a place for curriculum development and research. “We have student teachers from Florida Atlantic and IRSC and who come for their pre-service experiences,” Perez said. “We are also a demo site for best teaching practices and people come from the county, state, nation and internationally. We have a partnership with schools in China. “FAU offers top student teachers an accelerated program where they are placed in the classroom that is theirs, with a mentor from FAU who is there every day and a school-based mentor. It is very successful and many have stayed on to teach.” Perez said that she had to give credit to Debra Snyder, the retiring principal. “She opened this school and has a legacy of 37 years in the St. Lucie Public Schools,” she said. “I was fortunate to learn from the best.” She also noted that Deborah Iseman, also an assistant principal at Palm Pointe, was retiring after 39 years in the district. “I had two fabulous mentors,” she said. “I’ll miss them both, as much as I look forward to this new role.” Perez has been part of Palm Pointe’s leadership team for six years and hopes to continue to move the school in the direction the team has set.

Kathleen Perez “I’m going to continue to build upon that tradition of excellence that has been set,” she said. “The expectations for the students and staff will not change. We’ll revisit our vision and mission using current data to make sure that we are continuing to move forward and that our students continue to move forward. Palm Pointe commits to a comprehensive system of support for all students through rigorous quality instruction.” Perez said that Palm Pointe is the Home of the Rockets and that she intends to take that seriously. “I want to ensure that the ‘rockets’ are fully prepared for their next mission in life, their next schools. They’ll be mission ready. That’s the Pointe.” Perez added the ‘e’ to Pointe to underscore the message. “We’ve had an ‘A’ rating since we opened in 2008,” she said. “It’s the faculty, the staff, the students and the families. I’m very proud. In this day of accountability, where the bars kept rising, our students meet the challenges. The staff goes above and beyond each and every day. This is a great place to work because of the people who work here. They make my job easy. We’re really a family. I’m so proud to be named their next principal. I love St. Lucie County. It’s my home.”

Riverside season an interesting mix Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Riverside Theatre always provides a wonderful mix of big musicals and thought-provoking plays. The 2016-2017 season is no exception. The season opens Oct. 25-Nov. 13 on the Stark Stage with “Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash.” The music and lyrics are by the Man in Black, and the show was created by Richard Maltby. The Cash music is a backdrop to the story of his struggles and successes, his trouble, his redemption and his love of family. The show features more than two dozen classics, including “I Walk the Line,” “A Boy Named Sue,” “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Ring of Fire.” “Chicago” is a favorite of mine. The Kander and Ebb musical won seven Tony Awards and holds the record for the longest-running revival and the longest running musical in Broadway history. The show, set in Prohibition era Chicago, follows Roxie Hart and the murder of her lover. With songs like “Chicago,” “All that Jazz” and “Razzle Dazzle,” you will leave the theater humming. “Chicago” will be

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Tiffany Timmons should be enjoying every minute of life. A young mom in her early 30’s, Tiffany suffers from early onset Parkinson’s Disease including Dystonic Tremors and Myoclonus and Essential Tremors. With two young children and difficulties walking and talking, Tiffany and her family, including husband Brian, a Florida Highway Patrol officer, could use a little help and love from the community. A Van Duzer Foundation fundraiser was hosted at Big Apple Pizza and Pasta in Fort Pierce on Wednesday, May 4. Approximately 450 friends of the family and neighbors came out and shared a slice of pizza with the family, as well as some much-needed support. As always with a Van Duzer Foundation fundraiser, 100 percent of all sales — including food, beverages, and staff sal-

Myron Tiffany and Brian Timmons aries and tips — went to help the Timmons family. Tri-County Towing donated a specialized golf-cart to be raffled, as well. In all, about $7480 was collected for Tiffany and her family. Donations can still be made to: www.vanduzerfoundation.org.

RIVERSIDE from page B1 presented Jan. 3-22. “Private Lives” is a real change of pace. Written by Noel Coward, it is witty and sophisticated and veddy, veddy British. It tells the story of Elyot and Amanda, once married and now honeymooning with new spouses at the same hotel. They meet on the balconies of their respective rooms and they decide to give their love another shot. Whether they stay together or return to their new spouses is the question; the answer will be supplied Jan. 31Feb. 19. Another big, beloved musical, “Mame” takes the stage March 7-26. The Jerry Herman show contains songs like “Bosom Buddies,” “We Need a Little Christmas,” “Open a New Window,” and, of course, “Mame.” The music of the Bee Gees is featured in “Saturday Night Fever,” running April 11-30. The show is based on the 1977 film and takes the audience back to a time of disco and bell bottoms. The music and lyrics include songs like “Stayin’ Alive,” “You Should be Dancing,” and “How Deep is Your Love.” The Waxlax Stage will showcase two very different plays. From Jan. 17-Feb. 5, the comedy “An Empty Plate in the Café du

NOW NG RI E F F O

Grand Boeuf” will be featured. The Michael Hollinger play, set in 1961, tells the story of a Parisian restaurant, the best in the world, which is open for only one patron, the owner and American millionaire, Victor. He arrives one night depressed and determined to die of starvation. The chef and staff try to change his mind as feasts of food and words are served up. “The Christians,” by Lucas Hnath will be presented March 21-April 9. It is the story of Pastor Paul, whose small, storefront church has grown in 20 years to a mega-church with a font as big as a swimming pool. As the congregation shares the end of the church indebtedness, Pastor Paul prepares to make a startling announcement about his own beliefs. Hnath is an Orlando native who planned to go to medical school and couldn’t stop writing. He has won a number of important awards for playwrights. The Riverside Theatre is located at 3250 Riverside Park Dr., Vero Beach. Subscriptions are available for 3, 4 and 5 show packages on the Stark Stage. Waxlax Stage productions can be added to the show packages. For information on prices and subscription options, call the box office at (772) 231-6990 or order online at www. riversidetheatre.com.

ST. LUCIE WEST — On May 4, rocker Pat Benatar and her longtime husband and guitarist, Neil “Spyder” Giraldo, performed an acoustic set at the Sunrise Theater in Fort Pierce. This tour marks Benatar and Giraldo’s 37th year as musicians together. In 1982, one year after “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” landed a spot on the U.S. Top 10, Benatar and Giraldo got married and in 1985, had their first daughter. Their relationship is one of the rarest, most enduring rock-and-roll love stories. When Benatar’s alien feline eyes and garage-glam attire first caught our attention in a 1980 with the cover of the Rascal’s “You Better Run” (the second video ever to air on MTV), the world of pop music was in fragments. The short-lived disco revolution and shorter punk explosion were already giving way to a new sound that blended the melancholy and exile of the post-war

era with a fresh defiance and embrace of uncertain future. Benatar was perfectly poised on the cusp of this world, exciting the romantics in us all as we plunged headlong into a new period of perms, polyvinyl, and passion. Benatar’s explosive voice, fearless persona, and the deep import of her lyrics helped pave the way for what would become a signature of the 80’s, the expression of a “deeply superficial” culture (to borrow Andy Warhol’s famous self-denigration) that would fuel diva Cyndi Lauper’s timeless anthems, pop-queen Madonna’s sexy rebellion, and Belinda Carlisle’s sometimes bouncy, sometimes wistful melodies. Benatar can still fill the room with the a youthful dissent that originally symbolized her career. After four consecutive Grammys for “Best Female Vocal Performer,” eight platinum and gold records, and 19 top 40 singles, she and hubby Neil Giraldo are still able to capture the energy and honesty that originally garnered them so much attention. In a 2005 interview on CBS “This Morning,” the couple said that when they met (Pat was 26, Neil was 23), it was like a blinding white light, and they both thought, “There you are! Where have you been?” When they got married, their managers and producers didn’t want the public to know, because they felt it would complicate Benatar’s image. “It was kind of left over from that old Hollywood weirdness when

the movies didn’t want anyone to know that people were married to each other,” said Benatar. “It was shocking that it was so late in the game, and this was still going on.” On May 4, the room instantly settled into a relaxed, intimate atmosphere as the duo recounted stories of their history together. They gave tribute to the more canonical tracks like “Love is a Battlefield” and “Heartbreaker,” and also trotted out some deeper cuts. Their rendition of “Hell is for Children” from their second album “Crimes of Passion” exposed a more thoughtful side to their legacy, addressing child abuse, one of the first popular songs at the time to deal with the issue. Their 1991 track “True Love,” a triumphant lounge song about two strong individuals finding synergy together, brought more of a jazz feel to the set. Over the years, both Benatar and Giraldo have singled themselves out as bold icons, never settling for the archetype set out before them. In Benatar’s 2010 memoir, “Between a Heart and a Rock Place,” she claims that she never meant to be sexy, but was more interested in carving out her own standard as a strong female performer. But it was precisely hers and Giraldo’s confidence that made them so attractive, and created a milepost for other budding performers to move towards. It is this same self-possession they radiate today: an expression straight from the heart, a downto-earth honesty, and a thirst for constant adaptation and empowerment.
