TRADITION — As the exterior walls of building one in the future Mann Research Center complex were erected last week, the Treasure Coast took another stride forward in becoming the premier Research Coast of Florida. The building, designed for clinical research and trials for diseases including diabetes, HIV/AIDS, cardiovascular disease and cancer, will connect with Martin Health System’s new Tradition Medical Center, which is set for a December opening. A ribbon cutting for the center’s first building, named Mann Medical One, is planned for October. The $9 million building, which is up to hurri-

The Palm Pointe eighth-grade student recently visited Tallahassee to lobby House and Senate support to pass a measure to screen every newborn in the state for heart defects using a pulse oximetry machine. The device is attached to a baby’s ankle or wrist, Sophie said. The oxygen saturation screening can detect more than 75 percent of critical congenital

ST. LUCIE WEST — Special needs students from St. Lucie County high schools seeking guidance from the St. Lucie Mets recently trained with players on a game day, but it was the professionals that left the field feeling inspired. “It’s a great time. These kids run harder than some of our guys. I love it,” right-handed pitcher Chasen Bradford said. “They inspire me. They have such a great outlook on life.” “They just have fun and that’s what it’s all about.” Bradford and his teammate and fellow pitcher, T.J. Chism, taught baseball basics last week to a

Chaney coaches kids camp with fellow NFL players By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

nrodriguez@yourvoiceweekly.com

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Dedication and the spirit of a warrior is the mindset one must carry to achieve great-success in life, 26-year-old NFL player and Fort Pierce native Jamar Chaney said. For the second year in a row, the Philadelphia Eagles linebacker will instill this motto into dozens of children who attend his annual football camp at Lawnwood Stadium in Fort Pierce next month. Children eager to learn football basics will also hear advice about life and the power of knowledge, Chaney said. “We’ll have the best of the best players in the world teaching these kids the fundamentals of the sport,” Chaney said. “We’ll also be teaching them qualities of working hard, leadership, character, the importance of education and staying out of trouble. They can take that information with them for the rest of their lives.” Players on tap to teach the camp include Oakland Raiders wide receiver Jacoby Ford, Baltimore Ravens defensive back Christian Thompson, Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy and Fort Pierce-born Yamon Figurs, who is a wide receiver for a Canadian football team. During his 2010 rookie season in the NFL, Chaney, who stands 6 feet tall, and weighs 242 pounds, had 36 tackles for the Eagles. In 2011, Chaney had 104 tackles and three interceptions. During the 2011 playoffs, he had 11 tackles. Last season, Chaney netted 24 tackles. Before his draft to the NFL four years ago, Chaney attended Mississippi State University, where

he was named to the All-SEC Second Team in 2007 and 2009 and finished his career with 288 tackles, 4.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and two interceptions. During his career at St. Lucie West Centennial High School, Chaney had a school-record 31 sacks in his career. Despite having his senior season cut short by hurricanes Frances and Jeanne, he had 65 tackles and 10 sacks in six games and was named to the Class 4A All-State Third Team. Chaney was rated as the 29th-best outside linebacker in the country by Rivals.com. Chaney said the one-day camp will accept between approximately 250-300 kids, ages 7-14. Last year’s camp attracted 200 children, a great turnout for an inaugural event, he said. “Last year was very rewarding. So many kids came out,” Chaney said. “The camp surpassed the expectations of everyone.” Children will learn plays and signals, field running, tackling and how to handle and throw the ball. But perhaps the biggest lesson will be in life itself. “With this kind of teaching, they always listen. Then you sprinkle in things like ‘Stay in school and make sure you get that education,’” Chaney said. “Because in the NFL you can’t go from high school to the NFL. You have to go to college and stay out of trouble.” Chaney recalled his days as a youngster growing up in Fort Pierce with six siblings. “I just stayed active. I played Pop Warner football in Fort Pierce and Little League (baseball) in Fort Pierce,” Chaney said. “I was

By Patrick Bernadeau For Your Voice News & Views ST. LUCIE WEST — In a golden era for shortstops, there was one that current St. Lucie Mets shortstop Matt Reynolds admired as a boy growing up in Tulsa, Okla. Alex Rodriguez, Nomar Garciaparra, Omar Vizquel and Miguel Tejada were all at or close to the peak of their powers Matt Reynolds in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but it was the shortstop in the Bronx playing deep into October and winning rings that Reynolds tried to model his game after. “Derek Jeter was definitely one of the role models I looked up to my whole life.” Reynolds said. “I just loved watching him play, his style, the way he goes about his business and how he approaches the game “I think his approach is very similar to how I try to approach the game. He makes the routine plays, but

SPECIAL from page 1 group of intellectually disabled students from Port St. Lucie, Westwood and Fort Pierce Central high schools. The two players were among a handful who volunteered for the event. It was a humbling experience to bond with the group, Chism said. “Oh it’s tremendous. It’s very rewarding for us and we have just as much fun as these guys do,” the lefty said. “You know, it’s a great opportunity for both of us.” Cassie Younc, community relations manager for the team, said the daylong camp was a chance for the players to get to know the community they proudly play for. “It really helps with the guys to come out and be with the special needs children,” Younc said. “It shows not only our players what the kids are dealing with, but it also gets them more involved.” Martha Taylor, a job coach at Port St. Lucie High School, said she reached out to the Mets to coordinate the special day. Aside from fun on the field, learning how to pitch, catch, run and field the ball, students would also learn about available jobs with the team. “This gives the students an idea of what employment opportunities are here at (Tradition Field) for our disabled population high school students,” Taylor said. “It gives them an opportunity to see what’s at their back door and meet the players. This is a chance of a lifetime for them. They

never would be exposed to something like this.” Taylor said the days leading up to the day were filled with eager anticipation. “(They were) crazy excited like little kids at Christmas time.” A total of 32 students participated in the event. Volunteers from AmeriCorps helped guide students around the field. Jeremy Figueroa, 18, a junior at Fort Pierce Central, was thankful to experience the rare moment. “It feels good. I’m really happy I get to do this. This is a good opportunity for us.” Figueroa, who plans to attend Indian River State College after he graduates next year, offered inspiring words to other intellectually disabled kids who want to enter the workforce. “I would say just keep your head up high and make sure you don’t let anybody bring you down. Just try your best at whatever you do.” Michael Bean, 19, a senior at Port St. Lucie High School, also plans to attend IRSC after graduation. The aspiring auto mechanic expressed his gratitude during a water break. Moments before, Bean learned how to score a run on a steal. “I’m really happy they’re giving their free time to come hang out with us disability kids, and teach us about baseball and jobs,” he said. For other students struggling with a disability, Bean said the secret to success is simple. “Go do what your heart feels and don’t let anybody discourage you.”

MANN from page 1 cane design standards, boasts approximately 45,000 square feet of space and sits on 3.5 acres. Construction began earlier this year, Mann Research vice president Andrew Favata said. “In just a few more months, we’ll have the roof done, all of the interior walls, all the windows and doors,” Favata said of the project, which is three months ahead of schedule. “We’ll have the hospital interior finish and all the tenant interiors built out.” Mann Research currently has operations in Connecticut and California. The life sciences and medical office development company is named after biomedical engineer Alfred Mann. The building’s two major tenants are Tradition Medical Center and Florida Vision Institute Surgery and Eye Care Center. The world-class facility, that will share a lobby with the hospital, will allow groundbreaking clinical discoveries from neighboring research facilities to be put to the test on Tradition patients, Favata said. “The focus of this first building is to provide space for Tradition Medical Center’s clinical trials research program. That’s what makes it really important and unique,” Favata said. “This is the building in which the partnership of Torrey Pines, VGTI and the hospital comes to fruition.” “We’re all partnering to take the research from the bench in the labs and bring it to the bedside so patients from Tradition Medical Center will be treated in here in Mann Medical One.” The new center will effectively eliminate the need to travel far for

the best medical care. “No more do all of us have to maybe travel to the Mayo or Cleveland Clinic,” Favata said. “Now we can do our research right here for the patients in our community.” The two-story building will be the first in a 22-acre Mann Research Center complex. The complex will eventually boast 410,000 square feet of medical offices, research and development facilities and retail space. Another building for research, officials said. Debbie Lewandowski, assistant vice president of oncology and research at Martin Health System, said Tradition patients will be the first in the world to participate in early phase clinical trials from Torrey Pines and VGTI. “What it means for our community is that patients have access to first trials to make differences in disease,” Lewandowski said. Patients will receive Phase 1 drugs that will hopefully cure some of the world’s most deadly medical conditions, Lewandowski said. “I love the fact they’re going to work on aging. They’re going to work on oncology and the immune system,” Lewandowski said. “Dr. Houghten (of VGTI) is working on a pain study. There’s a lot of stuff that’s going to come out of our own little community.” “The goal is make a difference in the community and really take (research from the) bench to bedside.” The endeavor has already created local jobs with more on the way. Approximately 120 area construction workers were hired to help build the center, Favata said. During the building phase of Tradition Medical Center, an esti-

Rick Zurich, assistant vice president of facilities at Martin Health System, said Tradition Medical Center will hire an additional 350 in staffers. Recruiting for the positions will begin in a few short months. Interested candidates can visit the hospital’s website to explore position options. Construction on the first hospital in western St. Lucie County began early last year. Zurich said a hospital in Tradition is long overdue. Statistics say around 100 western St. Lucie County residents are hospitalized at out of the area facilities on a daily basis, Zurich

said. “With the three hospitals that we have, we’ll be able to give a really good cross section of services,” he said. The 201,184-square-foot acute care hospital will feature 90 patient beds with the potential to expand to approximately 300 patient beds. Emergency care will include 27 exam rooms. Community waking up to pillowcase burglaries The community is waking up and striking back, but the pillowcase burglars are still at it. On Monday, April 22, there were 11 home burglaries in Port St. Lucie. At press time, they remained under investigation and no suspects had been arrested. “Last Monday we had 11 burglaries,” Master Sgt. Frank Sabol, public information officer of the Port St. Lucie Police Department, said. “We were hit in the western part of the city. We’re trying to see if they’re linked to the pillowcase burglaries.” He said patterns of the burglaries were slightly different than that used by a seemingly organized gang of burglars that appears to be operating from Broward County along the Treasure and Space Coasts. However, Port St. Lucie police recently arrested two suspected in pillowcase burglaries that struck

in Martin County minutes earlier. “We stopped the suspect vehicle on I-95 and arrested two for possession of burglary tools,” Sabol said. Martin County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Christine Christofek said the arrests were a textbook example of citizens and law-enforcement agencies working closely and doing all the right things to catch criminals. “They are currently in our jail,” she said. “The house they were caught in was an occupied dwelling. People were home. The people were able to get a vehicle description and a suspect description.” The residents, she said, avoided confronting the criminals, and called the Sheriff’s Office. So far this year, Martin County has had 16 suspected pillowcase burglaries. Port St. Lucie 14, which does not include the 11 recent burglaries. The St. Lucie Sheriff’s Office reports no recent suspected pillowcase burglaries. In a previous interview, Martin County Sheriff

William Snyder explained how the fast, professional burglars work. “The ‘pillowcase’ part refers to the MO, the method of operation, in which the burglar takes a pillowcase off the bed and uses it to place the stolen items,” the Sheriff said. Snyder said this type of burglar operates during the day, typically from about 9 to 11:30 a.m. They’re looking for vacant houses to burglarize while owners are working. “The traditional neighborhood would be $175,000 and above, but not gated,” he said. The burglars will work in teams of about three to four. They often rent late-model cars to drive to crime scenes and sometimes add temporary tinting and bumper stickers to give them the appearance of owned vehicles. They remove the props before returning them. They’ll enter a neighborhood and look for homes that seem emptied. “A lot of the time they do try to look professional, like they’re

from Comcast or something like that,” Sabol said. Additionally, he explained, “They knock on the door. If no one answers, they’ll send another crew to the back.” Once inside homes, the burglars move fast taking smaller items and get out. Among their apparent high-value targets — guns. In a great insult to Old Glory, Christofek said the burglars — who appear to be operating from Broward County — look for American flags in front of houses. “Which means you might have a firearm,” she said. Christofek said she was unsure how many firearms the burglars have stolen in Martin. She’s also unsure if there’s evidence that they’re keeping the firearms, passing them to other criminals or selling the weapons to otherwise lawful gun owners who’re unaware that they’re stolen. Additionally, she said the burglars seem to look for basketball hoops at yards, a signal that

ASK ThE DENTIST

Q- I just had a root canal treatment, now the dentist says I should have a crown, why? A- After root treatment the tooth is often weakened. Previous decay, fillings and then the operating for root treatment leave the tooth susceptible to fracture. A crown is the best way to prevent tooth loss from fracture. Q- Why is the edge of my crown dark? A- The typical porcelain baked over metal crowns that were the main material used from the 1970s to the present may tend to darken a tooth and not allow light to pass near the gum line. This often can be seen as a darkening or blue hue to the gums. All ceramic crowns now exist that overcome these limitations with no dark metal layer.

She sometimes experiences chest pains and shortness of breath. Diagnosed at the age of 6 months during a regular pediatric checkup, Sophie’s hope is that detection will save lives. “Our goal is to have these kids get the proper treatment they need and undergo whatever surgeries they might need before they leave the hospital,” Sophie said. “That way when they get home, they won’t be sick.” “If they go home and become too symptomatic, they may become too sick to have the surgery or they can die.” Sophie said her work as an activist began unexpectedly while

In just a month with St. Lucie, Reynolds quickly recognized the propensity pitchers had to throwing off-speed pitches in fastball situations as a major difference in the level of play. “In Savannah, if the hitter was ahead in the count 2-0 or 3-1, you were almost definitely getting a fastball,” Reynolds said. “But here, it’s a lot more off-speed pitches in hitter’s counts. “You have to be able to recognize pitches or else you will be swinging in a lot of pitches in the dirt.” Leading into the season, Reynolds leaned on the experience of veteran minor leagues as for what

That preparation has definitely helped me out so far this season.”

Banker expands horizons through books By Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@yourvoiceweekly.com

ST. LUCIE WEST — Shaun Williams has an undergraduate degree in finance from Florida Atlantic University and a Master of Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University. Still, he was not satisfied. “I’d hear “You have an MBA, you’re highly educated,” he said. “Something didn’t seem right. I had advanced training in the art of business, but I never felt well-rounded, or what I thought educated to be. I didn’t know what I didn’t know.” The banker, vice president of commercial lending at Harbor Community Bank in St. Lucie West, had an awakening after reading an essay. “It said that people who cared for a cause had to be able to think for themselves,” Williams said. “It encouraged readers to invest in “The Harvard Classics” or “Great Books of the Western World.” I’d never heard of them. I Googled them and was fascinated. I never knew there was a book set that was the canon of Western thought.” Williams decided to purchase the Great Books set. They began as a course at the University of Chicago in the late 1940s and were later sold as a collection. Robert Hutchins, president of the university, joined with philosopher and educator Mortimer Adler to bring the project to fruition. The original collection had 54 volumes and included the works of great thinkers from Plato to Freud. “The books are timeless,” Williams said. “They transcend millennia. There are the same ideas and problems that are no different than they were 2000

years ago, including law, justice, beauty, truth and God. People have these conversations every day.” Williams began reading the books, starting with Plato’s “Apology.” “I’ve always been curious,” he said. I read the “Apology” and said, ‘Wow. I was hooked. I was amazed at how easy it was to read. I always thought it was way over my head, but I totally understood it.” After several years, Williams sought out others to share the books and discuss them. “Mortimer Adler said that solitary reading is as undesirable as solitary drinking,” he said. (“I found) that’s it’s no fun. In early 2010, I looked for a Great Books book group, but the closest one was in Tampa.” Williams decided to start a group of his own. “I’m a banker,” he said, “I don’t have a Ph.D in English lit. I finally said I would do it. I said, ‘What do I have to lose?’ In August 2010, Williams set up a Meet Up page (on the Internet.) “I put up fliers and had the first meeting in September. Twelve people showed up and it was fascinating. Our first discussion was Plato’s “Apology. Everyone has their own baggage and prejudices. Discussing it is a very enlarging experience. I heard points of view I hadn’t considered and forced me to think about my own point of view. “We’re shattering paradigms and thinking more critically about important ideas. We are not a book review group, the Oprah book club or a lecture group. It’s to help each of us drive toward being more liberally educated. That’s not leftwing. It’s the education of man as man as opposed to vocational

ST. LUCIE WEST — They often help children take their first steps, ride a bicycle without training wheels and help with homework, but they aren’t a parent, grandparent or even a distant relative. They are the volunteers for the state’s 19th Judicial Circuit Guardian ad Litem program, based out of St. Lucie West. The 19th Circuit services children in Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. County-wide, the program has 250 volunteers. Volunteers visit just under 800 children in St. Lucie County who are in the foster care system.

ANGELS from page 19 of advocates last week during a swearing in ceremony at its St. Lucie West office. Approximately 20 were able to attend the official ceremony. Chief Judge Steven Levin commended the newest guardians for their selfless endeavor. “It’s always an honor to come here and swear in the new Guardian ad Litems. These are citizens of our community in the four-county area, who give of their time without compensation to help children,” Levin said. “They are special people. They go out of their way to be the voice of the children in the courtroom.” St. Lucie West resident Bob Spenelli, 66, was sworn in during the event. Right hand held high, Spenelli promised to serve and protect the children under his supervision. His proud wife, Janet, watched the swearing-in. She said her husband is perfect for the task at hand. “When he’s around children, he’s like the pied piper,” she said. “They just flock to him whether it’s his grandchildren or some-

body else’s. He acts like a big kid.” Bob Spenelli said he was motivated to help because of his love for children. “It’s tough today with families being split up and everything else,” said Spenelli, who used to volunteer at the Treasure Coast Food Bank and the Mustard Seed Ministries, both based in Fort Pierce. “The environment, jobs, things like that, broken homes. I want to get them looking in the right direction.” Rosemary Dorko, 73, of St. Lucie West vowed to help lay a strong foundation of values for the children, who oftentimes lack structure in their lives. Dorko was recruited as a volunteer last year when she visited the Guardian ad Litem’s office to drop off Christmas presents for the children. “My primary purpose is to of course work for the benefit of the child, whether in the courtroom or outside; to ease the situation in any way that I can,” Dorko said. “I suppose another goal would be to be certain that the judge, who is making decisions, has a full record of what’s going on.”

Shows program from May 9-12. The current version of the show was revised in 1999 by Peter Stone to eliminate stereotypical references to Native Americans. It also streamlined the story. David Moberg, director of Indian River State College’s Performing and Visual Art Department, considered both the original version and the new. “This one seems to move faster,”

he said. “It’s a story — within — a story. Buffalo Bill comes out and says that they’re going to tell a story. They call out the scenes. I did the other version years ago and I skimmed through it (for this production.) This new version moves so much faster.” The cast includes Hannah Williams as Annie; Sean Birkett as Frank; Austin Peer as Buffalo Bill Cody; Jennifer Howard as Dolly Tate; Shannon Maloney as Winnie Tate; Zach Hellings as Tommy Keeler; Corey Toussaint as Sitting Bull; and James King as Pawnee Bill. Moberg has high praise for his leads, Hannah Williams and Sean Birkett. “Hannah Williams is a wonderful young lady,” he said. “She’s got a beautiful voice and moves beautifully. She truly is a little pistol. She’s a lot of fun. She hasn’t been doing leads, but her voice and movements lined up. She’s wonderfully capable of doing leads. “This is the end of Sean Birkett’s first year. He’s had a phenomenal year, with the lead in ‘Ragtime,’ a major role in ‘Chicago’ and roles in plays. He’s a delight to work with and a talented young man.” Moberg said that the choice of “Annie Get Your Gun” is a nice

See CLUBBIN page 28 one for the end of the season. “It’s just a warm show,” he said. “It’s not tremendously complicated. We’re renting drops. We don’t have to do a lot of set building. The kids really enjoy it. The dances are just good old movement. It’s been a busy and wonderful season and it’s nice to just do fluff.” It’s especially nice if the fluff has tap-your-toes music by Irving Berlin. “Annie Get Your Gun” will be presented by students at Indian River State College as part of the McAlpin OnStage summer program on May 9-12. Performances are May 9-11 at 8 p.m. and Mat 11-12 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15. Call the box office at (772) 462-4750, Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The McAlpin Fine Arts Center is located at 3209 Virginia Ave., Fort Pierce. The next show in the summer series is “Decision Height,” a drama written by newcomer Meredith Dayna Levy. It will be performed from May 23-25. Tickets are $15. The season concludes with a cabaret taken from the world of contemporary Broadway. It will be performed from Jun 6-8. Dessert will be served during intermission. Tickets are $20.

are Dental implants right for you?

Now, you have more options. Implant-retained dentures are permanent, and they look, feel, and function like natural teeth. You can smile and eat without fear of slippage. You can go to sleep at night and wake up in the morning with your teeth in place.

all-on-Four/Teeth in a DayTM

Dr. Sohl is on the forefront of implant placement. He has a dental CAT scan unit on premises for computer guided implant placement protocols for Nobel Biocares All-on Four/ Teeth in a DayTM procedures. All-on-Four/Teeth in a DayTM was developed to minimize the number of implants required to anchor a complete set of dentures. A full arch can be replaced with four implants in a single visit, as opposed to as many as eight implants and multiple office visits.

ask about how Botox can help improve your smile Dr. Sohl believes in offering dental facial aesthetics. In order to ensure your new dental reflects your personality and facial features, Dr. Sohl provides state-of-the-art skin rejuvenation. Patients can receive fuller lips, less wrinkles, and a reduction in skin discoloration and imperfection.
