TRADITION — Residents of one Tradition subdivision said they’ve been waging a losing war for months against heavy-weight hogs that have wreaked havoc on their properties and struck fear into residents who are afraid to go outside after dark because of the aggressive creatures. Feral hogs, weighing in at more than 300 pounds, are running wild in the gated community of TownPark at Tradition, resident Robert Grasso said. The hogs have been a constant terror since January, he said. “We’re very upset about it. We want to move,” Grasso said. “We moved here to get into the safety

Voted #1 Since 2004 Hearing aid specialist, Joe Mutter knows that it takes a team to run a successful practice and Joe couldn’t be happier with his team. “The entire team is Tammy and me” Joe said with a glow in his eyes. “Tammy does all the heavy lifting around here and I know I would be lost without her” Tammy Carpenter, nearly a life long resident of St. Lucie County, joined up with Joe after a 10 year stint in the finance industry. It didn’t hurt that Joe is her Uncle. “Joe and I grew up together and when he asked me to come on board and help him run his rapidly growing business, I jumped at the chance” Tammy explained, with a certain twinkle in her eyes as well. “I knew that Tammy would be perfect for this position, and I sure didn’t want her using all of her skills helping somebody else’s business grow” Joe quipped. “This is great, it’s a family affair, Tammy is loved by all of my clients. She is the first one they talk to on the phone and she is always in a cheerful, happy mood. She goes out of her way to help our clients with anything they need from new batteries to getting wax out of their hearing aid.” “Now I’m not going to pump up her ego anymore and say that I couldn’t do this without her, but I sure as heck know that I wouldn’t want to try.” “The people that come into our office quickly learn that service and quality of care are exceptionally important here at Mutter’s Precision Hearing Center.

In addition, Mr. Mutter emphasizes the importance of highly personalized service. “What makes us different than other hearing aid places is our expertise, our training, our service, our care, and our listening skills, because fitting a hearing aid is as individual as your fingerprint. “Tammy’s attention to detail, her commitment to top quality customer service and a desire to help our clients with this most important need is a very critical factor in what makes us different than all the other hearing aid places out there and # 1 for so many years.

Meet your St. Lucie Mets: Rylan Sandoval, First baseman Patrick Bernadeau
FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE WEST — Professional baseball players can make smacking a blistering 94 mph fastball on a sharp line a simple task. Or at least, that’s how it looks for the stands or on the couch in front of a television. Hitting is made to seem as easy as see the ball, hit the ball, and watch the ball fly deep and far. But in a sport where failure for the best hitters is expected seven out of 10 times, for St. Lucie Mets first baseman Rylan Sandoval, success at the plate is due to what’s sitting on top of his shoulders equally as much as the 32-ounce lumber he clutches in his hands. Sandoval is off to the best start of his career at this level. At press time, Sandoval leads the Mets with a .290 batting average and ranks second in on-base percentage at .372. The results at the plate are attributed to heighten focus and a sense that the time to perform is now. “I’m 25 years old, going on 26, and there’s a sense of urgency to perform and move up from this level,” Sandoval said. “The main thing this year has been my mentality every day at the plate. “I’m been sticking with the same mental approach, trying to stay as mentally prepared as possible. That all ties into better pitch recognition and it seems to be working out so far.” Sandoval signed with the Mets organization as a non-drafted free agent in 2010, with the brunt of that time in St. Lucie. Before 2013, Sandoval carried just a
.224 batting average with the Mets. Playing time has varied over the years, but Sandoval’s improvement this season, he believes, Rylan Sandoval is to be linked to regular play. “Playing every day helps you get into a rhythm,” Sandoval said. “It’s very tough here in this league. There’s a lot of very good pitching at this level. So it can tough to be thrown into the lineup just a couple times in a week. “It’s not really an excuse, cause you still have to deal with it and figure things outs. But this year, I’ve gotten the opportunity to play every day and I’ve tried to make the most of it.” He was afforded that chance after finding a home at first base. It’s a position he hadn’t played in his career, but he believes a smooth transition has been made because of his time as a middle infielder. “My primary position has always been shortstop and when you are there, you have to know what all the other guys are doing,” Sandoval said. “At any time of the game, you need to know who is going where and who is covering what base. So by spending time there, I feel like I already know what to do.” Through 27 games at first base, Sandoval has committed just four errors in 240 chances, resulting in a .983 fielding percentage.

Several schools show double digit improvements FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Passing scores for third-grade students in St. Lucie Public Schools on the reading portion of the Florida Comprehensive Test remained relatively steady this year, according to results released today by the Florida Department of Education. Approximately 78 percent of St. Lucie students met the passing third-grade requirement in reading this year compared to 80 percent last year. Third grade
students in Florida must pass the reading portion of the annual test or risk retention in third grade. A passing score is 2.0 or higher on a five-point scale. Scores of third-grade St. Lucie students scoring at or above proficiency, or grade level 3.0 or above, in reading and mathematics also remained relatively steady this year compared to last, at approximately 50 percent. Leading the district in reading proficiency scores are Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition, WestGate K-8, Fairlawn Elementary, and
Rivers Edge Elementary. Double digit gains in reading proficiency scores were posted at Floresta Elementary with an 18 percentage point improvement, and Dan McCarty School with a 10 percentage point gain. Leading the district in mathematics proficiency scores are Palm Pointe Educational Research School at Tradition, Fairlawn Elementary School, Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts, WestGate K-8 School and F. K. Sweet Elementary. Palm Pointe posted double-digit gains in math proficiency scores at 16 percent-
age points, Floresta Elementary improved by 15 percentage points, and Fort Pierce Magnet’s proficiency scores in math improved by 11 percentage points. “There has been great improvement in student achievement at several of our schools, of which we are very proud and celebrate,” Superintendent Michael Lannon said. “However, overall the student scores do not reflect the enormous effort put forth by our St. Lucie teachers, the entire district team, and the level of professionalism, and care and love for each child, every day.”

President writes to West Gate kindergarten class Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer
nrodriguez@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE WEST — What started out as a routine writing lesson for one West Gate K-8 kindergarten class ended with an unforgettable correspondence from the White House. In an effort to teach her 16 kindergarten students how to address and structure a letter, teacher Marta Almiron said she had her class craft mock congratulatory letters to President Barack Obama in November after his victorious run for re-election against Mitt Romney. “Since we were working on how to write letters at the time, I thought this would be a good opportunity for them to write a letter to the president, congratulating him for his victory,” Almiron said. Following a template, students drafted their letters. Some students addressed the commander in chief as “Mr. President,” while others chose “Barack Obama,” Almiron said. “They came up with these beautiful sentences saying, ‘You know, I’m so glad you won;’ ‘We are so happy that you won;’ ‘You’re the greatest,’” Almiron said. After reading each letter, Almiron bundled them up, stamped the package and mailed them to Washington, D.C., with no expectations. “After I saw those letters, I thought, I’m going to mail them because they were so cute I can’t keep them just for me,” she said. Almiron’s class received a parcel of mail ad-

Two St. Lucie County students win at International Science and Engineering Fair FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — St. Lucie Science and Engineering Fair, an Affiliated Science and Engineering Fair with the International Science and Engineering Fair, proudly sent two students as representatives to the International Science and Engineering Fair. Intel ISEF, the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, is the premier global science competition for students in grades 9–12. Each year more than 1,500 high school students from more than 70 countries, regions, and territories display their independent research and compete for more than $4 million in awards. Both St. Lucie students were given awards and one placed fourth in the grand awards. Robert Bacchus, 16, a junior from Fort Pierce and a Lincoln Park Academy student, presented his project, “CancAARS: A Novel Therapeutic Target for Melanoma Tumorigenesis.” Robert won a special award, a four-year scholarship to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, valued at $60,000. Robert also placed fourth in the grand awards for biochemistry. He was presented with a check for $500.00. Neha Kambam Reddy, 16, a junior from Fort Pierce, attends Lincoln Park Academy. She presented her project, “Sustaining Ecological Biodiversity with Highly Specific RNA Interference (RNAi).”
Neha also won a special award, a four year scholarship to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, valued at $60,000. University of the Sciences awards five $15,000 scholarships to students whose research and academic interests align with the USciences mission. Scholarships become effective upon enrollment in the incoming class of fall 2014. At USciences, they are building on a life sciences legacy started almost two centuries ago as Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. From treating, researching, and studying diseases and cures on a molecular level to the medicines that improve lives worldwide, USciences is about moving life forward. The Grand Awards and Special Awards were presented in Phoenix. The students were able to attend the International Fair with support from the St. Lucie County Education Foundation’s Fund A Project. Through the project, students were able to solicit and raise the funding needed to participate. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Living in a state with countless warm, sunny days and a picturesque coastline unfortunately comes with consequences in the form of creepy crawlers, a big nuisance to the subtropical Florida way of life. Thankfully, Port St. Lucie’s The Bug Guys are here to save the day. “Maybe in some parts of the country it’s a luxury to have pest control, but in the southern states, especially in Florida, it’s a necessity,” company owner Jim Pond said. “If you own a home, you really need a professional pest control company coming in and servicing the home.” The company, established in 2010 by Pond and Ken Stanley, who together have 25 years of combined experience in the field, promise to be at your disposal within 24 hours of a call for help to eradicate pesky bugs from your home. Serving St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River and Okeechobee counties and some of Palm Beach County, The Bug Guys promise to offer a quality and friendly bug-free environment for a reasonable price. “Our vision is to provide the best quality pest control and termite control that any company can offer and also to make a friendly, professional, exciting place to work, where you can make a good living,” Pond said. The company, which uses EPA approved pesticides and odorless chemicals inside commercial and residential properties, prides itself on its fast response time and easily accessible owners. “One of the things Ken and I wanted to do is make sure we’re always available to our customer base,” Pond said. “They’ll always be able to reach one of us no matter how big we get.” With expansion on the horizon, Pond and Stanley vow to keep that promise. “Our goal by the summer — in the next few months — is to open up Palm Beach and then go into Broward and then probably go into the

ASK ThE DENTIST
Q- How long should my teeth last? A- Teeth can last a lifetime if cared for properly from an early age. Prevention is always simpler than treatment. While teeth can last a long time, they may not always present very well, they change color and shape. What else did you get at age 6 that you still have today? Q- Why are my teeth sensitive? A- Sensitivity can be from cavities or from trauma. Amazingly, this trauma can be from clenching or grinding your teeth other than meal times. Teeth can become sensitive to temperature or biting pressure.

HOGS from page 1 and comfort of a gated community and we’re being attacked by wild wildebeests.” “Sometimes we both just sit around and cry, frankly,” Grasso said of he and his wife. During the latest attack, Grasso’s backyard received extensive damage and resembles a hole-filled battleground. The hogs, which travel in groups called sounders, come every night, Grasso said. Pleas for help to property managers have been ignored, Grasso said. “I’ve had absolutely no help from any of the associations or the owners,” a distraught Grasso said. “I’ve talked to them and I’ve called them and they’ve told me they’re armadillos and that they’re eating acorns off my acorn tree.” Grasso’s neighbor, George Rudolph, said his lawn along with his life has been uprooted by the problem. “My wife and I haven’t slept a full night’s sleep in over seven weeks, because I was up every hour,” Rudolph said. “We had strung cow bells all over the property so we could hear them trip the line and go out in the middle of the night and chase them away.” Rudolph finally erected a fence around his property 10 days ago, but still can’t sleep because the hogs are still destroying his neighbor’s yards. “They flip that sod in their yard as if it were pancakes at IHOP,” Rudolph said. “I’m telling you it’s frightening to see, you know, 150- to 200-pound boars lifting up sod so easily that’s been down for over a year.” Residents believe the wild hogs are coming from an undeveloped parcel of land just beyond their backyards. “That parcel is overgrown and it’s hog heaven
YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • ST. LUCIE WEST/TRADITION • MAY 31, 2013 • 9 over there,” Rudolph said. Rudolph, along with his neighbors would like to see the parcel contained until it’s developed. “Ultimately I’d like to see Minto put a fence around the property. We’ve spoken to other developments locally that have done that,” a frustrated Rudolph said. “They just simply bit the bullet and put a fence around the entire property to keep the boars out.” Jeffrey Mayer of All County Hog Removal said hogs have plagued Tradition for years in search of food in the ground, which includes bugs and grubs. “They go in and they root up and furrow,” Mayer said. “It’s like a bull dozer comes in.” The nomadic roamers are highly intelligent, can adapt to almost any environment and have virtually no predators expect for the occasional alligator. They are also prolific breeders, said Mayer, who estimates he’s trapped at least 100 hogs in St. Lucie County alone last year. Tracking dogs are used to locate the hogs, which are often sold for barbeque meat after their capture, Mayer said. Florida’s hog population of 1 million is second only to Texas, which boasts a hog population of 2 million, Mayer said. “They breed like rabbits,” Mayer said. “The hogs have multiple litters a year. Each litter can contain three to 15 piglets.” Mayer cautions residents to beware. “People should be very careful because they are very dangerous animals,” he said. “They are not afraid to attack humans if they feel threatened or their young are near.” TownPark at Tradition was developed by The Minto Group of Canada and is managed by Campbell Property Management. Calls to Campbell were not returned by press time.

PORT ST. LUCIE — Melissa Williams, biology major at Indian River State College, always knew that she wanted to help people. After her graduation from IRSC next year, she planned to apply to the University of St. Augustine for the Health Sciences to study for a doctoral degree in physical therapy. After spending a semester as a paid intern at Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies, her goal has not changed, but she is reconsidering her plans. She worked at Torrey Pines under the direction of Dr. Akihito Ozawa, who is studying cells to understand how cancer is caused by different types of proteins in the body. “I still want to go for a doctorate in physical therapy, but I think I
might be changing,” she said. “I wanted to be a physical therapist to help people get back their lives. (Now I’m thinking about) being a part of research and finding a cure and helping people, working together to find a cure for disease.” Williams is part of a Work-Study program that takes IRSC students and puts them in research situation at Torrey Pines. They earn $10 an hour for the 19 hours a week they work and receive a $1250 stipend per semester. The students selected are all biology majors who must meet application requirements. BUG GUYS from page 7
Jim Pond The Bug Guys The Bug Guys also perform structural fumigation and eradicate bed bugs, ants, roaches and rodents, a big problem in St. Lucie West, both said. “It starts with exclusion,” Stanley said. “You have to trap them either in or out.” The Bug Guys will perform an inspection to determine the rats’ access point into the home, fix it and trap the remaining rats. Rodents and bugs are no match for The Bug Guys, who don bright orange button down shirts, a strategic choice in branding, the two said. “Ken picked the orange so that we can be really branded and separated from the competition,” Pond said. Each shirt is embroidered with the tag line, “Our Commitment YOU,” a simple display of the company’s ultimate commitment. For more information on The Bug Guys, visit thebugguys.com

The Darrell Gwynn Foundation donates approximately 35 to 50 wheelchairs every year to deserving individuals, Rogers added. “We love, love giving wheelchairs to people like Hakeem who are going to take this gift of mobility and pay it forward,” Rogers said. “He’s a bright kid. about what career path he’ll soon take, offered words of inspiration to others afflicted with disabilities. “Don’t look at the bad side. Look at the good side of your life, because God will open up many windows for them,” Hakeem said. Hakeem’s special needs teacher, Colleen Morrissey, who has worked with Hakeem for the past eight years, said the foundation stepped in at a pivotal time in her student’s life. “It is absolutely one of the best things they could have done for him before he ages out,” she said. “With this chair he’ll be able to obtain a job in competitive employment like his peers who are non-disabled.” “The world will be more open to him in opportunities because he’ll be able to be more independent,” Morrissey said. Morrissey said she managed to raise a few hundred dollars for a new wheelchair before the Darrell Gwynn Foundation got involved. The funds were donated to the group home in Port St. Lucie where Hakeem lives, she said.

INTERNS from page 11 ship with IRSC because the biology program is now four years,” she said. “There’s nothing better than hands-on, real-life experience for the students. We ask them to fill out paperwork with their interests. If someone specifically wants to work on Alzheimer’s or cancer, we try to match them.” Houghten said that 38 students were recommended this past semester and 20 selected. She looks for students who have had proper training in the laboratory and taken appropriate classwork. For some students, it’s the first time they’ve seen sophisticated
research equipment of the kind used at Torrey Pines “What I’m looking for is that they’ll be safe in the lab and have had the proper classes and interest,” she said. “We love having the students here. It’s good for morale. They are enthusiastic. They have read about some of the equipment but the school couldn’t afford it.” Melissa Williams has found the entire experience enlightening. “In my biotech class, I learned about some of the experiments Dr. Ozawa was doing and he process he used. I was really excited to get started and learn what he knows. I’ve learned so much. It’s kind of overwhelming, working
with these top-notch scientists and post-docs. I hope I’ll be one one day.” For Pam Houghten, the situation is a win for everyone. Introducing the new generation of scientists is part of her goal. “Education is my passion,” she said. Melissa Williams sees it from the other side. “I think it’s awesome,” she said. “That’s pretty much all I can say. I learned so much I’m almost on overload.” Students interested in applying for a semester internship at Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies must be at least 18, have re-
liable transportation and must complete specific biology and chemistry courses with a C or higher before applying. They also Melissa Williams need a written letter of recommendation from a full-time IRSC biology or chemistry faculty member and must complete an employment application from Torrey Pines. Debbie Butler, board president for Guardians for New Futures, said, “This partnership truly helps both of our organizations to better provide for the children, plus the Guardians For New Futures can now accept gently worn clothing. In the past, we did not have the ability to do so due to the lack of space and manpower.” Hope’s Closet 4 Children, a program of Grace Way Village, provides clothing to children whose families are in crisis, disadvantaged by poverty or homeless. Anthony V’s brings authentic Italian zest to Tradition Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer
nrodriguez@YourVoiceWeekly.com
TRADITION — Anthony V’s Pizza and Trattoria in Tradition takes diners on a true culinary conquest with a vast menu that must be explored. Formerly Johnny V’s, the restaurant is headed by new owner Jeremy LaBianca, a master at creating simple, ingredient-fueled Italian fare crafted with love. LaBianca, 32, who owned and operated Salerno Pizza in Port Salerno for the past 8 years said his May move to Tradition is a decision he doesn’t regret. “I love Tradition. I love the family atmosphere. I love the business people. I love the retirement communities,” said LaBianca, who is a common sight on the busy sidewalk outside of his restaurant where he chats with customers and curious pedestrians. “I love people, so therefore I love Tradition. I get to talk to the people. And that’s just something I have a passion for.”
Most of the folks the dynamic Italian-American meets in the square become regulars, LaBianca said. Once seated, patrons are serviced by an experienced and friendly staff, expansive menu in hand. A highly recommended starter is the eatery’s bruschetta made from fresh ingredients from Nelson Family Farms in Fort Pierce — as are many of the restaurant’s dishes. The mouth-watering dish includes three slices of baguette bread, coated with garlic butter and topped with a bruschetta mix of diced tomatoes, onions and basil. Many of the dishes are prepared by Daniel Erdocio, a cook who has specialized in creating homemade Italian cuisine for the past five years. “I love it. I don’t know what it is,” the modest expert said. “It’s just a passion I have.” Another starter that can’t go without recognition is Anthony V’s unique meatball sliders served on a seasoned garlic knot with mozzarella and parmesan cheese. The simple, yet innovative dish was created by LaBianca, who prides himself on serving fresh, home-

I love the restaurant business. It’s very natural to me,”
LaBianca said. “… You have to love your job in order to make it amazing.” The restaurant offers take out, free delivery and sells pizza slices all day, every day. Every pie is baked in the restaurant’s authentic double brick oven. “I want the best of both worlds in regard to amazing dinners and amazing pizzas and I feel like Tradition has that now,” LaBianca

ITALIAN from page 23 said. Like the meatball sliders, another menu item exclusive to Anthony V’s is its Chicken Sensation Pizza made with breaded chicken, fresh garlic and basil with marinara sauce and mozzarella cheese. “I love chicken cutlet parm. The breaded chicken adds flavor with the Italian seasoned bread crumbs that’s on the chicken,” LaBianca said of his creation. Another must-try with the LaBianca touch is the lasagna pizza made with marinara sauce and topped with Italian sausage and sliced homemade meatballs with ricotta and mozzarella cheese. Two highly recommended entrees are the penne alla vodka made with ham and optional chicken breast and the Fettuccini LaBianca made with heavy cream Alfredo sauce, fresh peas and garlic. “The reason why I named it the Fettuccini LaBianca is because my last name is LaBianca and in Italian, it means ‘the white,’ so Alfredo sauce is obviously white,” LaBianca said. Anthony V’s boasts an old school family atmosphere. The eatery’s namesakes, LaBianca’s two young sons, Anthony, 4, and Vincent, 5 months, are restaurant regulars with their mother and LaBianca’s wife, Nicole. “What’s important to me is that I
do this for them, my family,” said the doting dad, who co-owns the restaurant with business partners Jerry and Jade Haffey. “I wanted to one day be able to leave them something, a legacy of some sort.” The restaurant is also the perfect spot for a couple’s night out, LaBianca said. Anthony V’s large wine selection is popular with the love birds, he said. “We introduced an Italian house red and white wine from the Due Torri wine family that pairs perfectly with our Italian food.” “We also wanted to give people the opportunity to get finer wines, so we have our Italian Pinot Grigio from Alverdi.” LaBianca is also planning some cosmetic changes to perpetuate the eatery’s existing rustic feel with the addition of mahogany-hued walls, accents and soft lighting before the season starts in October. “When you walk in, you’re going to feel like you’re walking in to Italy,” LaBianca said. Anthony V’s Pizza and Trattoria is located at 10472 Village Center Drive in Tradition. Hours: Sunday-Thursday 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Happy Hour on draft beer and house wine is every day from 2:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. Catering is available for all occasions.
