Tradition Field of dreams for FSL All Stars this weekend STAFF REPORT

ST. LUCIE WEST — The Florida State League All-Star Game on June 20, to be played this year at Tradition Field, is the only allstar game in affiliated professional baseball played on a Saturday night. This year’s All-Star Game will be the third for which St. Lucie is host and the 12-team league’s 54th. The previous two at Tradition Field were in 1994 and 2004. At that 1994 FSL All-Star Game, shortstop Derek Jeter represented the Tampa Yankees

happy with the idea that a facility using human waste as a material ingredient for compost, will be manufactured in their backyards. Kris Creeden, partial owner of the company, is hoping that he can convince residents that this

“I’M HERE TO SERVE YOU, NOT SELL YOU” Since entering the Hearing Healthcare field I have learned quite a bit. Not from the books or schools I’ve attended but from my clients! With very few exceptions the folks that have been to other hearing aid providers tell me that they felt “sold” and that the concern seemed to be about how quickly they could sign the order forms to buy hearing aids. They felt SOLD!! At Mutter’s Hearing Center my client is the focus, not the sale! Yes, I do sell hearing aids but rest assured that if you consider Mutter’s Hearing Center for your hearing healthcare needs, you and the product best suited for your hearing will be the focus, not the sale!! I am here to serve you, help you understand your hearing loss and guide you thru the complicated process of regaining your hearing.

ALL-STAR from page 1 a year before he embarked on a 20-year career with the New York Yankees that ended after last season. A decade later in the 2004 game, current MLB stars Hanley Ramirez, Francisco Liriano, Russell Martin and Jonathan Papelbon were among the competitors. This year, St. Lucie Mets third baseman Jeff McNeill, the Mets’ 12th-round pick in the 2013 draft who is leading the FSL in batting average, was voted a starter for the South Division All-Stars. Joining McNeil on the South Division team is St. Lucie pitcher Akeel Morris. The league’s managers, coaches, official scorers, online broadcasters, team public relations people, and this year for the first time, players all voted to select the teams. Traditionally, the MLB AllStar Game is on a Tuesday night amid a four-day All-Star break. This year the MLB game is on Tuesday, July 14, in Cincinnati. The Triple-A All-Star Game and the Double-A Eastern League game are the following night. The Double-A Texas League
plays its All-Star Game on Tuesday, June 30 and the third Double A- circuit, the Southern League, plays its game on Tuesday, June 23. Also on June 23, the FSL’s Class-A Advanced sister leagues — the California and Carolina leagues — square off in an All-Star Game at Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. Having FSL All-Star game on a Saturday, however, amid a three-day All Star break from June 19-21, gives the local fans a better opportunity to enjoy not only the game but other associated events and festivities. “We are excited to bring this event to our fans and to Tradition Field,” said St. Lucie Mets general manager Traer Van Allen. “We look forward to showcasing our great facility, St. Lucie County and the city of Port St. Lucie to the rest of the Florida State League. Before the game Saturday, some of the players will participate in a home run derby. Rick Hatcher, in his first year as executive director of the Treasure Coast Sports Commission, also brought in a new event for the region to coincide with All-Star weekend and Father’s Day, and help keep area
Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer St. Lucie Mets third baseman Jeff McNeil will be participating in the Florida State League All-Star game Saturday, June 20 at Tradition Field in St. Lucie West. McNeill was batting .335 after last Sunday’s 5-2 victory at home against Palm Beach.

Congressional race is on
W
ant to know what I’m doing for a living these days? Trying to keep up with the dizzying flurry of names encircling Florida’s 18th Congressional District. Honestly, I’m losing count of all the candidates, near candidates, might-be candidates, and someone-wishes-they’d-be candidates aiming to take Patrick Murphy’s seat now that he’s announced a party-blessed run for the Senate. Murphy aims to fill the seat Marco Rubio is vacating to make a presidential run. I moved from a place with two congressional districts that were dull as they get, the 7th and 3rd at the time. Covering congressional elections was perfunctory. Democrat Corrine Brown would get a token opponent or two who’d spend the campaign trying to convince voters she’d become Washingtonized. Republican John Mica would get a token opponent or two who’d spend the campaign trying to convince voters he’d become Washingtonized. Then both would handily win re-election and thank supporters for all their hard work. Yawn. I’m not sure if the Treasure Coast should cheer or moan at the prospect of being a competitive-seat congressional district that’s drawing and going to get more national attention. The 18th district — which stretches from the northern side
Patrick McCallister staff writer of Palm Beach County to cover Martin and St. Lucie — has a Cook Partisan Voting Index, PVI, of R+3. To put that in perspective, Florida’s rating is R+2. The R, of course, standing for Republican. Wisconsin is D+2. Florida’s 22nd District, just south of us, is a D+3 rating. The D, again of course, meaning Democrat. Any Cook PVI score between R+5 and D+5 is counted as competitive. That score helps us understand why there are many more Republicans in the crowded field of candidates than Democrats. What Democrats undoubtedly hope to tap is Murphy legacy, so expect to hear a lot about reaching across the aisle from them. What they also have going for them is the fact that Martin County Republicans are a breed

of their own who often have more in common with the Green Party than their fellow GOP-ers. Here’s what I know at press time — Six Republicans have announced their aims to make Congressman Murphy’s seat red in 2016, and about 10 are known to, or strongly suspected of, considering it. Indeed, there are folks moving into the district that many suspect are aiming to run for the seat. The Republican field for the 18th Congressional District could become a local housing boon. Martin County School Board member Rebecca Negron, St. Lucie County Commissioner Tod Mowery, and the 2014 Republican nominee and former State Representative Carl Domino have all announced candidacies. The Florida Division of Elections lists only Domino and Negron on the Republican side, so far. Three others have announced candidacies on YouTube or Facebook. They are Brian Mast, Rick Kozell and Paul Spain. Palm City’s K.C. Traylor — of Florida Not All Aboard fame — has announced on her Facebook page that she is “deeply consid-
ering running for Congress.” Undoubtedly she’d seek to qualify by petition. Another prominent name on the list of possible Republican primary candidates is Martin County Commissioner Doug Smith. State Representative Gayle Harrell is another. Another Republican name from the 2014 primary, Alan Schlesinger, is also named among likely candidates for ‘16. On the Democratic side, there’s Melissa McKinlay, who faces Stuart’s John “Juan” Xuna and fellow Palm Beach County Commissioner Priscilla Taylor. Xuna is the only Democratic candidate the state lists so far. That’s nine candidates and counting. In 2014, the 18th Congressional District fell onto national political pundits’ lists of highly competitive races. That’s why it attracted no fewer than seven Republican primary candidates. In addition to Domino, the Florida Division of Elections listed as active Republican candidates in 2014 Ellen Andel, Brian Lara, Beverly Joy Hires, Ilya Katz, Alan Schlesinger, Calvin Deon Turnquest and Nick Robert Wukoson.

Also in the South Division lineup is shortstop Willy Adames, the Tampa Rays’ No. 3 prospect, and outfielder Austin Meadows, the Pirates’ No. 4 prospect. Yefri Perez, one of two outfielders from the Jupiter Hammerheads, leads the league in stolen bases. Brewers No. 4 prospect Clint Coulter highlights the North Division lineup — Milwaukee’s No. 1 pick in the 2012 Draft. Perhaps 30 years from now, a child who attends this year’s FSL All-Star Game will recall seeing one of those players when they were still a top prospect the way adults who were at the 1994 game remember seeing Derek Jeter when he was still on the verge of greatness.

The players and coaches in the Prospect Wire tournament will get tickets to the FSL All-Star game, and players’ parents will be offered discounted tickets, said Hatcher, a former pitcher at Florida State who made it as far as Double-A in the Atlanta Braves farm system. Googling the company name, you hit some walls. Phone numbers and website addresses are old and no longer in service. Creeden said are no land lines on site as of yet. Power is being run out to the facility at this time. The website has not been a priority, he said. The focus has been trying to obtain the conditional use permit here in St. Lucie County; updating the website has been put on the back burner for now. The site manager has a cell phone, which is the main source of contact currently, which is (407) 496-2872. Creeden said that there are four phases to the development of
a facility here in St. Lucie County and if the facility is constructed and they are up and running successfully, the company will offer approximately 20 jobs to St. Lucie County residents. When asked of how the operation of the facility will affect traffic in the community, Creeden said the company would have restricted traffic routes and the routes would be specified in the conditional use permit proposal. He said traffic would be impacted — 90 truck trips per day — but would be limited to a specific route which runs from State Route 70

cility here in St. Lucie County that will take vegetative debris mixed with biosolids to create fertilizer. The facility will operate on 80 of those acres; the rest will be retention and setbacks. The original site in Ocala was shut down in 2010 due to complaints of odor from nearby residents and violations of the processing permit. In a phone interview, Creeden expressed that he wanted to do everything he could to alleviate St. Lucie County residents’ concerns about the proposed facility and make them feel positive about it. He understands the concerns and agrees that he would have them himself if something of this nature were coming to his own neighborhood. He also said, however, that he would have an open mind if he were in the same situation and give the concept a chance. Creeden explained that the proposed facility here in St. Lucie County would be very similar to one that is currently in successful operation in Sumter County. The Sumter facility is 60 acres, of which half is currently being used. There are eight employees, and since it opened 13 months ago, there has only been a one-person employee turnover. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Residents and builders in Port St. Lucie will be able to save time as the city’s building department has added services on line. With the new website at pandapublicweb.cityofpsl.com, people can apply for certain permits, pay fees, schedule inspections and accomplish other tasks without traveling to City Hall. Joel Dramis, the city’s building code administrator, said the city recently started the new web site and the goal is to give the public access to all the forms needed in the building permit and code compliance processes. Dramis said the city plans to gradually add services to the site. “We constantly monitor this
website on a daily basis,” he said. Depending on the needs of people who use the site, he said, services will be added. The website will help builders determine what forms they need and help them find up-todate forms, Dramis said. Different forms are needed depending on what the type of work they plan to do, he said. As an example, he said, a specific permit is needed for construction of a roof. Currently, people can apply for residential water heater, air conditioner change-out, fence and electrical (service change, grinder pump and temporary pole) permits online. They would download the appropriate form, print it out, fill it out, scan it and then email it to the building department. Once everything is approved, the permit will be emailed. While waiting for a permit,

COMPOST from page 7 to Shinn Road. He stated that this traffic would include approximately 40 truck trips per day. Creeden’s primary company is C&W Global trucking company, a venture he runs with his brother. He got into composting after talking with one of his customers who owns a potting soil company. That customer, Matt Biegler, eventually became his business partner in the Compost USA endeavor. Creeden said their confidence is so great in their current operation in Sumter County that Biegler quit his job with his potting soil company after 28 years to run this company full-time. Creeden says he trusts Biegler implicitly to run the company. “I would trust him with my kids,” he said. Creeden admits that mistakes were made at the now-defunct Ocala plant. “At the first site in Ocala, we learned a lot. It was not an ideal location. Once the storage ponds were full; the site was not a good site.” He is confident that the proposed location in St. Lucie County will be a success. He states the land is dry enough and the houses are far enough away that a situation like Ocala will not be repeated. “Ocala was not a good site for us. For me personally, if I did not
WWW.YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM
think it would be better, I would not go forward with this.” Creeden explained that the site in Ocala was on a natural clay liner. When rain came through, there was standing water that had nowhere to go and the site became inoperable. It was also too close to homes and the standing water created a smell. He also went on to explain that a site manager was hired to run the operation while he and his partner were running their other companies. “We learned our lesson about absentee ownership.” St. Lucie County was chosen because the company was originally looking for property anywhere on the east coast of Florida, Creeden said. The Becker family, longtime area citrus grove owners, have a tree farm in Hobe Sound and are potting soil customers. Creeden said he was introduced to the Beckers through friends, and that an opportunity came about through introduction. The Beckers own the land that the proposed facility will be on and Compost USA will be leasing the land for the operation. The Becker organization will be a 50 percent partner in the operation. Compost USA is currently in trials with the University of Florida and the United States Department of Agriculture in exploring the benefits of finished compost material, Creeden said. The finished
product should be beneficial in agricultural operations. There are currently trials with the USDA, led by Dr. Dr. Duan Yongping at the U.S. Horticultural Research Laboratory in Fort Pierce, geared toward strengthening orange trees to help fight off disease with this material. Another potential benefit for the county, Creeden said, is that the company has offered to pick up yard waste and land-clearing debris at no cost. This could help save up to $500,000 a year for the county, rather than having the waste picked up and going into a landfill. The finished product can be spread on agricultural properties and as a base in potting soil for nurseries. The product is similar to Florida peet, Creeden said. “We take Class B material that is treated material. It is 99 percent pathogen-free. We take this material and clean it up, pasteurize it and make it 100 percent pathogen free,” he said. The company must submit to water quality tests every six months to the Environmental Protection Agency. The company has so far submitted water for testing three times in their 13 months in operation. All of the water testing has come back clean, Creeden said. He said although it is possible a load could be mixed with wood waste, and if it’s dry,

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The largest retail manufacturer of hurricane and security shutters on the Treasure Coast will build a new facility and bring new jobs to St. Lucie County over the next several years, thanks in part to support from the city of Port St. Lucie and St. Lucie County. During Monday’s Port St. Lucie City Council meeting, the city approved a three-year ad valorem tax exemption estimated at $20,886, based on current year property appraiser values. “A diversified, growing economy is essential to a prosperous Port St. Lucie and Treasure Coast, and helping to grow our local businesses should be the central thrust of our economic development efforts,” said Mayor Greg Oravec. “It is encouraging to see the city and county working together with our economic
development partner, the St. Lucie EDC, to help an existing local business, such as Expert Shutter Services, to expand its operations.” Expert Shutter’s expansion efforts include expanding its workforce by more than 30 percent — at wages which equal or exceed the county’s current median. The company will also be making a capital investment of more than $2 million. In March, the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners also awarded a $16,500 grant to Expert Shutters through St. Lucie County’s Job Growth Investment Grant to help with the expansion. expansion and verifiable jobs will be created,” said St. Lucie County Commission chairman Paula Lewis. “This is why we have tools such as the tax abatement program and Job Growth Incentive Grants, so that we can not only recruit new businesses to the area, but help expand those that are already here in operation.” Expert Shutter Services is family owned and operated by Treasure Coast residents Michael and Jamie Heissenberg and their three children, Michael, Christopher and Christina, and has been in business for nearly three decades. Expert Shutter Services designs and develops new products in the hurricane and security shutter industry and holds several U.S. and international patents for their designs. CANDIDATES from page 6 Realistically, the primary largely stayed between Hires and Domino. It also largely became a contest to prove who hated the proposed passenger rail All Aboard Florida more. Despite Hires’ attempt at connecting Domino to All Aboard Florida through his support for SunRail in Central Florida, he won the primary. Then incumbent Murphy held his seat from Domino with 151,253 against 101,778 votes. That’s 59.78 percent against 40.22, a 19.56 percent separation favoring Murphy. So much for the national pundits who knew nothing about local political dynamic, such as Martin’s Green Republicans. Murphy had a couple things that helped him handily trounce Domino — amazing political senses, strong bi-partisan — indeed anti-partisan — credentials and charisma oozing out of his charisma. From his record in the Florida Legislature, we know Domino is a down-in-the-ditches kind of politician. He’s about the nuts and bolts of writing legislation and governing. Murphy is about handing President Barack Obama a bottle of filthy water on a local airport tarmac when he visited to play golf for the week-
YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • ST. LUCIE WEST/TRADITION • JUNE 19, 2015• 15 end. That’s the sort of gesture that helps local voters feel Murphy is their man for getting action on cleaning the Indian River Lagoon, an issue important to Republicans and Democrats here. Where 2016 might head is hard to tell Murphy off running for the Senate. Candidates are already lining up with anti-All Aboard Florida positions, even though that’ll likely be an issue out of Congress’ hands by the time any would take office in January of 2017. The Indian River Lagoon is another issue all the candidates I’ve talked to are tapping. But, the science is in and the way to clean up area waterways is known. It’ll be hard for candidates to find ways to put sunlight between each other on that. So, what will the driving issue of this congressional campaign be? I suspect it’ll be bi-partisan appeal. There Democrats might have an advantage. With the Murphy legacy in place, they’ll be able to use “I reach across the aisle” as a primary hue and cry then carry it to the general election. It’s not as clear whether the Republican primary voters will be as warm to their candidates talking about cozying up with Democrats.

Of the 31 employees currently working at Expert Shutter Services, about 95 percent of them have residences and families in Port St. Lucie. “We are thrilled by the show of support from the County and the city of Port St. Lucie as we expand our business and open our doors to new employees,” said Michael Heissenberg. “Within the next 12 months, we expect to hire 10 new, full-time employees from the Port St. Lucie area at an average wage of more than $16.50. The company’s expansion strategy includes the construction of a new 24,800-squarefoot manufacturing facility on a 2.3 acre industrial property in Port St. Lucie, an anticipated $2,100,000 capital investment. Local companies, including civil engineers, architects, contractors and builders are being used for the construction of the new facility. “As an expanding, homegrown, local manufacturing business that exports a product

Port St Lucie, FL- The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have generic names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, or Cymbalta and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects.

As you can see in Figure 2 , as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning and many additional symptoms. l blood these very smal Figure2: When seased they begin di e vessels becom the nerves begin to d to shrivel up an . te ra ne ge de
The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage then your condition can been treated
In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined. 1. What is the underlying cause? 2. How Much Nerve Damage Has Been Sustained. NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is nothing that we can do for you.
3. How much treatment will your condition require?
The treatment that is provided at our clinic has three main goals: 1. Increase blood flow
The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here on the Treasure Coast that offers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (see the special neruopathy severity examination at the end of this article)
2. Stimulates small fiber nerves
Dr. John Silva will be offering this neuropathy severity examination to the first 15 callers Call to make an appointment with Dr. Silva to determine if your peripheral neuropathy can be treated.

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow.
Dr. John Silva at The Neuropathy Relief Center will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy.
3. Decrease brain-based pain Part o or treatment protocol lizes a specialized low level light (L.E.D.) therapy to increase blood flow as well as treatments to heal the nerve damage.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — John Carroll High School is proud to announce that it has officially been selected to participate in the Advanced Placement Capstone Program. JCHS is the only high school, public or private, in the four-county area that will be offering this challenging program. This exceptional opportunity allows students to enhance their academic development at JCHS. The AP Capstone is an innovative program from the College Board that equips high school students with the independent research, collaborative teamwork, and communication skills that are increasingly valued by colleges. AP Capstone is built on the foundation of a new, twocourse high school sequence, AP Seminar and AP Research. It is designed to complement and enhance the in-depth discipline-specific study provided
through other AP courses. According to College Board, the AP Capstone program was developed with the intent to test students’ performance on tasks, assessments, and application of research methodology; complement the rigor of AP courses and exams by challenging them to think critically and creatively; plan and conduct a study or investigation; propose solutions to real-world problems; plan and produce communication in various forms; collaborate to solve a problem; and integrate, synthesize, and make cross-curricular connections. Next fall, select 11th grade students will begin the AP Seminar course. In this course, students are assessed through a team project and presentation, a research-based essay and presentation, and a written exam. The following year, the students will

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Will, Tatiana, and John Dyer were excited to have the opportunity to meet with three real-life heroes this week, as they presented Southeast Honor Flight with the May Dyer Difference Award. Three veterans, Joseph Russell, Scott Smith, and Fred Messina, all pilots who served during World War II, were on hand, along with volunteers from Southeast Honor Flight, to accept this month’s Dyer Difference Award. Speaking on behalf of the entire Dyer Chevrolet family, Tatiana Dyer thanked Russell, Smith, and Messina for their courageous service, and presented the group with a plaque and check for $3,000. Southeast Honor Flight Board Chair, Todd Tucker, said the money will help send veterans on the one-day mission to visit the World War II memorial and other patriotic sites in Washington, D.C., “Of the 16 million men and women who served the United States during World War

II,” said Tucker, “only around 855,000 are alive today, and nearly 500 of them die each day. Southeast Honor Flight is proud to transport 300 veterans each year, free of charge, on a once-ina-lifetime experience that honors their service, patriotism, and courage.” Since relocating to the area in 2008, each month, members of the Dyer Chevrolet staff meet to review the applications which have been submitted and select one nonprofit organization to receive that month’s recognition and $3,000 award. For the Dyer family and the members of the Dyer Chevrolet staff, it’s all about helping to make a positive difference in the community. For the recipients, it’s an acknowledgement of their tireless efforts to do the same and a much-needed financial boost to help further their missions. If you’d like to nominate a non-profit organization for the Dyer Difference Award, please visit www.dyerdifference.org or find Dyer Difference on Facebook.

Sunrise Theatre offering free Sunday movies this summer STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Sunrise Theatre had an early career as a movie house where people came to be entertained by the relatively new art form. This summer, the Sunrise will again air movies and they will be free. The Sunday screenings are on June 28, July 12, 19, 26, Aug. 2 and 16 at 3 p.m. A full concession stand is available. The season opens with “Last Vegas” June 28. It stars four Academy Award winners, Michael Douglas, Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline, as four friends who travel to Las Vegas for a bachelor party, determined to recapture their youth. “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” on July 12, stars an ensemble cast led by Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy. The comedy-drama tells the story of British pensioners, each with a story, who travel to India to a hotel brochures described as “renovated.” The hotel owner, played by Dev Patel, is an optimist, but the hotel residents make do and
make new lives for themselves. July 19 brings “It’s Complicated,” starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. Streep owns a bakery and is a single mother who is rekindling romance with her former husband (Baldwin) while being attracted to her architect, played by Martin. “The Bridges of Madison County,” on July 26, brings Streep to the screen again, this time opposite Clint Eastwood, who also directed. Based on the Robert James Waller best-seller, Streep plays an Italian war bride in the Midwest who has a brief encounter with Eastwood, playing a photographer on location. Streep received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. On Aug. 2, the feature is “Something’s Gotta Give.” The romantic comedy starts Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson as successful adults who find love later in life. Keaton got an Academy Award nomination for her role. Aug. 16 brings “The Strange Case of Benjamin Button.” It tells the (strange) story of a man in born in New Orleans after World

is “Keeping the Legacy Alive” Feb. 20 and Darlene Love sings some of her greatest hits in a return to the Lyric Feb. 22-23. The month ends with “Beginnings: The Music of Chicago,” Feb. 28. Lyric favorite Steve Solomon combines elements from his popular shows, as well as new material, in a show March 1. Actor Jeffrey Tambor, known for his roles in “Arrested Development” and “Transparent,” has a conversation with the audience March 2. “The Magic of Motown” brings the harmonies and choreography of the best of the groups from that era to life March 7. On March 8, the music of Kander and Ebb is brought to life in “Kander and Ebb… and All That Jazz,” with songs from shows like “Chicago” and “Cabaret.” Legendary entertainer Tony Orlando brings his greatest hits to the Lyric March 10. A tribute to the Bee Gees, “Stayin’ Alive,” comes to town March 12 and the Doo Wop Project explores the history of that musical style March 13. Country music band Savannah Jack brings vocal harmonies and Southern sass to the theater March 15. The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra brings musicians, crazy costumes and a New Zealand twist to music March 18. Robert Navarro and his Latin Jazz Orchestra present “A Night at the Palladium” March 19, re-creating the dance hall in New York. Fiesta Mexico-Americana features the Grammy-winning group Los Lobos March 21. “Celtic Nights: Spirit of Freedom,” explores the roots of Celtic music and its effect on American music. The April 9 show features elaborate imagery and costumes. John Loesser, who recently gave up day-to-day operations of the theater to become its artistic director, spoke about the new season. “I have some very cool people coming,” he said, “Jeffrey Tambor is an amazing actor. My favorite
show is “The Return of the Dukes of Hazzard Christmas Show.” Both are good singers. They can sing and we’re going retro. We’ll get a great show out of Wopat and Schneider.” Loesser also mentioned Faith Prince, Darlene Love and…the Wellington Ukulele Orchestra from New Zealand. “I had wanted to do it for years,” he said. “They’re very funny, and where else can you see an entire ukulele orchestra?” After this past season’s success with “The Rabbi and the Italian,” Loesser put together “The Jew, the Old Jew, and the Guy from Jersey.” “They’re very good comedians,” he said, “People love comedy shows. They do clean stand-up. It’s not that easy to find, but there’s a demand for it. It’s your basic Bob Hope-type humor.” There are returning favorites, including a Peter White Christmas with Rick Braun and Mindi Abair. “They’ve been here eight straight years,” he said. “They’re the best that are out there. It’s become a social event at the Lyric. The Capitol Steps will be returning, as will Lee Greenwood, the latter for the first time in nine years. Loesser is enjoying his new role. “This allows me to not worry so much about day-to-day operations,” he said. “I’ll add new things and do expanded educational outreach. I may even produce a show or two. It frees me up to think more creatively. I’m still doing community relations and raising money for the theater. It frees me up to look at areas we haven’t developed.” Loesser noted that the season’s list is by no means complete. New shows will be announced throughout the summer. The Lyric Theatre is located at 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart. For more information, visit the website www.lyrictheatre.com or call (772) 286-7827.
