ST. LUCIE WEST — After their son was taken much too soon in a St. Lucie County school bus crash last year, Simon and Lillian Beauchamp have found the perfect way to celebrate Aaron Beauchamp’s nine years of life.

The St. Lucie West couple recently established The Aaron Project, a scholarship fund to help students in the county achieve a college education. The Aaron Project will also annually provide cleats to an athlete and a grant for a teacher. “Those are three things that Aaron stood for,” Aaron’s mother and principal at Manatee K-8, Lillian

Beauchamp said. Aaron, a fourth-grade student at Frances K. Sweet Elementary, died at the scene of a March 26 school bus crash last year at the intersection of Okeechobee and Midway roads. Around 30 students were on the bus. Sixteen, including the driver, were suf-

“Finally - I can hear again” Dear Joe,

I am writing this letter to “Thank You” for over-the-top service I have received from you in the fitting of my new hearing aids in January, 2013. I have had a hearing problem since the 1980’s due to driving long-haul trucks and being in the motorcycle business for a number of years. I have invested in five (5) sets of aids over the years, but with less than favorable results until I came to you. I tried two pair before moving to Okeechobee in March, 2001 and two pair from a national hearing center here in Okeechobee, with my last encounter costing me well over $5,000.00. I even wrote a letter to our local chamber of commerce to complain about the lack of results.

Edw. L. O ’Roke

As my hearing loss was getting worse as time went by, I decided

to try once more with your office and what a pleasant surprise to discover that I could be helped by your Starkey Hearing Aids and your expertise for a price that was about what I paid the other national place way back in 2008.

Principal named for new charter school Shelley Koppel Staff writer

Stacy Schmit includes five years as a middle grade science teacher, five years as the technology coordinator at a high school and five years as an assistant principal. She believes that this is an exciting time in education. “As long as I’ve been in leadership, we’ve been studying about educational reforms,” she said. “There have not been huge reforms in 150 years. We’re just on the cusp of huge educational reforms led by data-driven instruction and tying teacher evaluation to teacher growth. We know that we should reform education, but it fizzles out.” For Schmit, instruction tailored to the student is critical to the student’s success. “Individual instruction is a cooperative (effort) between teachers and students,” she said. “That way they become independent-thinking, goal-setting lifelong learners.” Students will have a personalized learning plan, Schmit said. “Our philosophy is that the students are first,” she said. “There are opportunities for students to have a say on their personal academic goals. Teachers assess students all the time for where they need enrichment and remediation. Students will have guidance to do goal-setting. They will work on the skills the teachers have chosen and the goals set by the student. An individual goal might be that the student wants to be become fluent (in a subject) at a higher level.” Foreign language instruction is a part of Charter Schools USA’s curriculum, but Schmit sees it as more then learning another

ST. LUCIE WEST — When Renaissance Charter School at Tradition opens for its first school year in August, principal Stacy Schmit will be there, giving students a high-five. “We have an opportunity to invent ourselves,” she said. “I’m very excited about being the founding principal.” The school is a public school and it is tuition-free. It is similar to a district-run school, but parents have the opportunity to choose to send their children to it. Renaissance Charter School has a nonprofit governing board. That board has retained Charter Schools USA, a company based in Fort Lauderdale, to hire teachers and staff, including Schmit. She is in the process of interviewing teachers. “We are actively hiring teachers,” she said. “We are very selective. They must be certified through the state and have a true passion for students.” In its first year, the school will have 845 students in grades K-6. After the first year, sixth-graders move up and begin the school’s first seventh grade. Eventually, the school will be K-8. Prospective students for the charter school apply online during an Open Enrollment period. Each grade has a certain number of seats available. If there are 100 seats and 150 students, there is a lottery. The 100 seats are filled and the remaining 50 go students are placed on a waiting list in the order they were chosen. As of the beginning of June, all seats had been offered, but much like a college acceptance, parents must complete paperwork and accept the seat. If they do notrespond by the deadline, the seat is offered to the next student on the waiting list. The school is still accepting applications for all grades as places are expected to open. Schmit holds bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and biology from Florida International University in Miami and a master’s degree in education from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. She is working on her doctorate at the latter school in school leadership. Her educational experience

Family of slain Sheriff’s sergeant to drop road rename bid Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

nrodriguez@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — After the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners agreed last week during an informal meeting Midway Road should not be renamed after slain deputy Sgt. Gary Morales, the Morales family said they will drop all bids to have any road named after their lost loved one. The family was expected to petition the city of Port St. Lucie to rename or dual-name Crosstown Parkway after Morales because many of the late sergeant’s family members live within a mile of the road. But in a Facebook post last Friday, Morales’s brother, Brian Morales of Port St. Lucie said the family won’t move forward with the bid. “We, the Morales family, will no longer suggest or pursue the naming of any roads to (honor) Sgt. Gary Morales, but again thank you all for your love and compassion you have shown to each and every member of our family extended and local,” Brian Morales posted. Brian Morales said a road named in his late brother’s memory would have been a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice Sgt. Gary Morales made in the name of the community’s safety. Sgt. Morales was gunned down in Fort Pierce the morning of Feb. 28 during a traffic stop and pursuit. The man authorities say is the trigger man has been charged with first-degree murder and is awaiting trial in a Martin County jail for safety reasons. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

“First, we wanted all law enforcement agencies when they drive on the named road to remember their value and training as they go about their shift,” Brian Morales wrote. “Secondly, we wanted the community as they drive on the named road to remember the sacrifices our law enforcement take on and to have a better understanding and appreciation. These are your neighbors, family, friends, fathers and mothers.” “Lastly, as you drive on the named road we wanted you to remember no one can promise you tomorrow regardless of your training, wealth, community status, preparedness or religion, but to live each day positively and with purpose.” During its June 12 meeting, the Commission said fallen law enforcement officers are traditionally honored in St. Lucie County by naming buildings, not roads. Commission Chair Tod Mowery said the buildings usually reflect a passion close to the departed hearts. That method insures each fallen officer is honored equally.

BANK from page 1 atmosphere. “When you bank with us, you don’t get one person, you get the whole team,” Warren said. Warren said her bank truly roots for the community. “We’re all people of the community,” she said. “If our community doesn’t do well, we don’t do well.” The bank is so in tune with the community needs that some bankers at the branch can be reached any time on cellular lines after business hours and on weekends. And to keep up its community connection, the branch will have a local art corner which will display local artists’ work. The corner will display new art every two months, Warren said. Warren said the bank’s executive management team is also handson with employees. “They’re very in touch with their branch, employees and their customers,” she said. “As we go out on calls, they’ll join us on those business calls.” Harbor Community Bank was founded more than 50 years ago in Indiantown as the First Bank of Indiantown. In 2011, the string of branches were renamed Harbor Community Bank, which has 14 branches across the state. The first St. Lucie West branch was opened in September.

Maria Reyes, residential loan officer, said the bank’s expansion is indicative of a growing economy. “We are very, very busy with mortgages. I’m here almost every day past (closing) time,” Reyes said. Reyes said she’s also seeing an increase in first-time home buyers, the first time since 2008. “That’s when the bubble burst. The guidelines for mortgages got very tight,” she said. “A lot of people didn’t qualify for loans. The home values tumbled.” Reyes said back then, when property values plummeted, refinancing was no longer an option. “When you don’t have equity, you can’t refinance. We can’t lend more than the value of your house.” Reyes said the tide is changing. “People are buying again in Florida and new construction is booming.” President and chief operating officer J. Hal Roberts Jr. said the new move is an exciting one for the historic bank. He said the location will help perpetuate the bank’s motto of providing “banking the way it used to be.” “We’re relationship bankers. The question I always ask is, ‘How many people know their banker?’” The answer is simple at Harbor Community Bank. Many customers have formed bonds with their bankers and tellers.

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Harbor Community Bank Client Pamela Roberts is greeted by Pam Cenk, customer service reprpesentative at the bank’s new branch on St. Lucie West Boulevard. The bank recently left a smaller facility to a a free-standing building allowing it to offer more services to its clients. Harbor Community Bank is located at 1549 N.W. PSL hero police officer saves unconscious driver

Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer

nrodriguez@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE WEST — A quick-thinking police officer is being hailed a hero after he saved an incapacitated motorist from a potentially deadly situation at the intersection of Crosstown Parkway and California Boulevard last weekend. The morning of June 8, Port St. Lucie Police Sgt. John Holman noticed the driver in front of him begin to convulse and slump over the steering wheel of her car. With its driver unconscious, the 1999 gold Saturn began to head south on California Boulevard into the busy Crosstown Parkway intersection, Holman said. In a split-second move, Holman pulled his police cruiser in front of the Saturn, allowing it to bump into the rear of the cruiser and stop. “I saw her start to arch in her seat. She was arching and kind of stretching. Her posture became real stiff and I saw clenching fingers and I knew what was going on right then,” said Holman, who recognized the woman was having a seizure. Holman, who has spent 21 years with the Port St. Lucie Police Department, was also an EMT and firefighter in Martin County for five years before

joining the force. His medical training immediately kicked in once he saw the woman collapse, Holman said. “You are trained to make split-second decisions. This is one of the few jobs where you have a couple of seconds or less to decide what you want to do and what the outcome is going to be,” Holman said. “This time, I knew I had a couple of seconds to either follow her until she crashed into somebody or stop it. And I realized I had enough time to get in front of her, and I did, luckily.” Once the two came to a complete stop, Holman threw the Saturn into park and began checking for vital signs. “She was still completely out of it,” he said. “I made sure she was breathing. That’s number one, always check the airway first. She had an airway. She was breathing.” The woman behind the wheel is Jessica McGill, 26, of Port St. Lucie. McGill indeed suffered from a seizure that morning and has experienced one in the past for the same reason, she said. “The easiest explanation would be the Red Bull I drank the night before. It’s known to give some people seizures. But if we go one step above that, mixing it with alcohol is doubly as bad,” said McGill, who said she consumed two to three small cans of the

It’s not a good combination in your system.” McGill said the events from that day are foggy. “I remember being at the light. I remember seeing the cop and the next thing I remember, I was waking up to the paramedic,” said McGill, who was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Had Holman not been there, McGill said other motorists could have been injured or worse. “I’m just very glad that he noticed,” said the mother of one, who was free of her nightly responsibilities the evening prior. “I can’t imagine what would have happened if he hadn’t been there and he hadn’t have seen me starting to seize.” McGill, who plans on personally thanking Holman for his courageousness by drafting a letter of gratitude, said he’s a true hero. “I would like to just thank him for being so alert and having the knowledge that it took to save my life,” McGill said. “And I want him to know how grateful I am that he does what he does.” On being hailed a hero, Holman is humbled, but said the title is a little over the top. “That’s not the title. It’s not a title that we aim to achieve,” he said.

Jessica McGill McGill was not charged in connection with the incident. Police spokesman, Master Sgt. Frank Sabol, said McGill showed no signs of impairment from alcohol. Florida Health Department experts could respond to questions about Red Bull side effects by press time. A search of studies on dangerous side effects of Red Bull and the energy drink mixed with alcohol did not yield siezures as a side effect.

Inner Truth Project hosting author Peter Greyson FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Inner Truth Project Center is hosting local author Peter Greyson on Thursday, June 27, 7 p.m. He will be discussing his book, “Dear Lilly,” which he initially wrote as a handbook for his daughter when she entered the potentially dangerous world of young adulthood. Greyson will have copies of his book available for sale that he will autograph with personal messages. The Inner Truth Project Center is located at 2190 Reserve Park Trace, No. 13, Port St. Lucie. Drinks and dessert will be provided. The event is free and donations will be accepted. Greyson has a B.S. in education and a master’s degree in literacy from Brooklyn College. As a former abused child, drug addict, womanizing frat boy, and suicidal depressive, the author wrote “Dear Lilly” as an emotional account of his struggle with crippling inner demons and his eventual road to enlightenment. He draws upon his wisdom as both a father and a school teacher to gently guide teenage girls through a maze of truth, deception and adolescent uncertainty. The powerful documentary that set the world record for the largest film screening in history will land again in St. Lucie County. Treasure Coast Hospice continues its partnership with Southeast Florida Honor Flight to present a free screening of the film, “Honor Flight, One Last Mission,” June 24 at The Thomas Counseling Center in Fort Pierce at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. “Honor Flight, One Last Mission” is a heartwarming documentary about four World War II veterans and a Midwest community coming together to give the vets a trip of a lifetime to view their World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Each vet reflects on his war experience, and recalls beautiful postwar life stories, as they embark on their own Honor Flight. The concept of the film was so moving that it united 28,442 people in Milwaukee Brewers’ Miller Park for the star-spangled premiere, setting a Guinness Book World Record for the largest attendance at a film screening. The film not only honors the legacy of the WWII veterans, but also provides a much-needed perspective – challenging the audience to think deeply about what it means to live in freedom. “The movie is a great tribute to our veterans and opens the eyes of the community to how important Honor Flight is for these men and women. I am so thankful to Treasure Coast Hospice for helping raise awareness of the need to continue this vital program,” says Donna True, honor flight guardian volunteer.

language. “I will have formal language instruction at every grade level,” she said. “Science and social science will be integrated to help students become learners of the world and world cultures.” That means that students may study a country’s language as well as its culture, foods and customs.

ROAD from page 4 “In the case of Officer Morales, he was clearly an amazing training officer. Our public safety training facility has been renamed in his honor...” The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office renamed its training facility after Sgt. Gary Morales shortly after his death. Chief Deputy Garry Wilson said he believes the tribute is a fitting way to honor Morales, who was instrumental in making the facility into what it is today. The Sheriff’s Office plans to erect a new memorial wall by next May to honor its fallen. This month, the office received an anonymous donation for $10,000 to help cover the cost. “It’s very important to us,” Wilson said of the memorial wall.

For Schmit, every student deserves the special attention she wants all of her students to have “I think all students need individual instruction,” she said. “It’s tailoring it to the needs of the students.” For more information about Renaissance Charter School at Tradition, visit the website, www. traditioncharter.org or call (772) 924-2890.

“We’ve had just a small stone in front of the building for years and the sheriff feels strongly that we have to do a better tribute to those who have given their lives in the line of duty.” The commission also said renaming Midway Road would cost thousands, if not more to update emergency manuals for the state and county. The renaming would prove costly for businesses located along the road, that would have to pay for costs connected with the change, including updating business cards, advertising and websites. “It’s estimated that it would be hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars to change the documentation in those manuals and for each of the entities...,” Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky said.

BEAUCHAMP from page 1 fered mild to severe injuries. The first recipient of the scholarship was Gabriel Chavez, 18, who recently graduated from Fort Pierce Central High School. Giving Chavez the gift of a $2,000 scholarship had a special meaning, Lillian Beauchamp said. “It was important because he actually knew my son,” she said. “So, it was even that much more special.” Chavez plans on attending St. Leo University near Tampa in the fall, where he’ll ponder a major in criminal justice. Chavez said receiving the scholarship was “bittersweet” because Aaron wasn’t there to cheer him on. Chavez, who had known Aaron since his freshman year at the high school, said Aaron, an accomplished Mako soccer player, would accompany his mother to every Cobras soccer game. Lillian Beauchamp was assistant principal at the time. “He was just a happy kid, always ready to have fun, smiling,” Chavez fondly recalled. Chavez also remembered his last day with Aaron as his favorite. “It was the day when the team beat Sebastian River in the regional semi-final game,” Chavez said. “At the end of every game, we’d always (shout) ‘Cobras.’ At the end of that game, he’s the one who asked, ‘Oh, can I say Cobras?’” “That was the last game he went to,” Chavez said. Aaron’s father, Simon Beauchamp, began making dry fit shirts with Aaron’s image on the soccer field to fund the project’s first award. Currently out of stock, the shirts read “No. 2 on the field” and “No. 1 in our hearts.” Aaron donned a No. 2 jersey. Simon Beauchamp and his 13-year-old son Benjamin also created a memorial garden at Temple Beth El Israel in St. Lucie West as part of Benjamin’s bar mitzvah project. The memorial garden, which took six months to create, contains water, greenery and an eternal flame to honor the everlasting

Aaron Beauchamp effect Aaron had on the hearts of many local residents. Simon Beauchamp said the garden is a place that all denominations can “enjoy, reflect and celebrate.” “I want people to be aware that it’s not just for the temple, it’s for all of St. Lucie County,” he said. Simon Beauchamp, who said his son enjoyed interacting with the community through volunteerism, said Aaron would be thrilled with The Aaron Project and the lasting impact it will have on education and sports. “He loved to volunteer and be a part of the community,” Simon Beauchamp said. Last week, the Van Duzer Foundation held a night of pizza and fun to raise money for the project. The event took place at Big Apple Pizza and Pasta in Fort Pierce. It raised $4,096. “Everyone knows the story and I think it helps the family to help celebrate Aaron’s life. Great kid,” foundation head and Lake Charles resident Scott Van Duzer said. “We want to remember him for something more than the bus accident. And this is a step in the right direction.” “The Aaron Project was all their idea,” Van Duzer said. “We’re just here to help get the word out.”

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Making bad decisions, hanging out with the wrong crowd, skipping class and poor grades were a way of life for Johnny Lamour, 16, until a friend took him to the Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County. He didn’t know that walking through the doors of the Chuck Hill Unit, just one of 18 Boys & Girls Club locations in St. Lucie County, that his life was going to change forever. “Before the Club, I didn’t do anything — no homework, I skipped class, and just hung out at home,” said Lamour, a sophomore at Centennial High School. “As a freshman, I wanted to try out for the basketball team, but my grades were so bad they wouldn’t let me. That broke my heart. With nothing else to do,

NACO from page 20 for the efforts of our Board and dedicated staff, especially for two programs that have such a positive impact on public safety and the environment,” said St. Lucie County Commission chairman Tod Mowery. The Sea Turtle Friendly Beach Campaign is a program that educates St. Lucie County’s coastal residents about proper sea turtle lighting regulations. Administered by staff members from the IFAS/ St. Lucie County Cooperative

Extension Office, Media Relations, the Mosquito Control and Coastal Management Services Department, the Tourism Division and Code Compliance Division, the program has resulted in improved code compliance, record numbers of sea turtles nesting on County beaches since 2001, and increased public knowledge of sea turtle biology and conservation. Created by the County’s Solid Waste Division, the Fleet Watch program works with law enforcement agencies to train field crews on how to spot and report suspicious activities in the community.

The program has put an additional 2,000 eyes and ears on the streets, helping law enforcement agencies observe, report and solve criminal cases. NACo’s Achievement Awards recognize innovative programs development by counties in 21 different categories. Award winners were announced last week. St. Lucie County was one of 12 Florida counties to be recognized in the 2013 Achievement Award program, along with Broward, Dade, Flagler, Hillsborough, Leon, Manatee, Okaloosa, Palm Beach, Pasco, Polk and Sarasota

counties. During the past four years, St. Lucie County’s has received 12 Achievement Awards for its various programs and services. The National Association of Counties is the only national organization that represents county governments in the United States. Founded in 1935, NACo’s membership totals more than 2,000 counties, representing more than 80 percent of the nation’s population. For more information, visit www. naco.org.

Indian River State College and the Florida Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence are hosting the third annual COSEE Florida Science Symposium Wednesday, June 26 at the Indian River State College Science Center in the auditorium (N-135) from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. This is an excellent opportunity to view and discuss local scientific research performed by students enrolled in the IRSC Bachelor of Science in Education Degree program. The symposium marks the completion of the Research Experience for Pre-service Teachers (REPT) Program. Throughout the seven-week internship program, IRSC science education students conducted research with local marine scientists. The students will premiere their COSEE Science Teachers as Researchers

videos to show how they connect their research experience to science classrooms and discuss the scientific posters they developed. The symposium is free and open for the public to stop by and check out the Science Center at IRSC on Wednesday June 26 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. The Science Center is located on the IRSC Main Campus at 3209 Virginia Ave. in Fort Pierce. COSEE Florida works to bring scientists, educators and people of all ages together by reaching out to the public to educate and inform them about the marine ecosystem to stimulate community discussion and to increase awareness of the value of scientific knowledge in environmental decision-making. For information on the third annual COSEE Florida Science Symposium, contact Meghan Buckley at (772) 462-7663 or email mbuckley@irsc.edu.
