The announced attendance Saturday of 5,112 was swelled by about 1,000 people in town for the Prospects Wire Father’s Day Challenge, a youth baseball tournament organized by the Trea-

Preceding the game and most exciting, especially for the younger children, was the Home Run Derby, which Tampa Yankees third baseman Miguel Andujar won in overtime over Palm Beach Cardinals first baseman Luke Voit, for whom Montgomery was rooting. “I got to see so many home runs,” Montgomery marveled about the hour-long power hitting display in front of about half of the eventual crowd. Douglas Calder, Montgomery’s father, said he and his wife, Becky, bring their son to 15 to 20 St. Lucie Mets games a season, but he might see only a few home runs in each game. Post St. Lucie resident Dwayne Cushman, said while watching the Home Run Derby with his 7-year-old son, Brody, “They like the long balls.” Brody said he liked watching “how far they hit the ball.” Another young Port St. Lucie resident, 11-year-old Aaron Address, came with his dad to AllStar Night “hoping to see some monster home runs go out of the park.”
Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer St. Lucie Mets infielder Jeff McNeill picked up two hits during the FSL All Star Game as a member of the South Division team Saturday, June 20. The South beat the north 6-0 at Tradition Field in St. Lucie West. Aaron’s father, Stuart, said he takes his son to several New York Mets spring training games and

hustle,” Stuart Address said. “They’ll fight with everything they have because that’s the only way they’re going to get to the big leagues.” Caio Freitas, a 19-year-old Port St. Lucie resident, brought his girlfriend, Camila Tapia, and his brother David, 8, to All-Star Night. David Freitas wisely observed, “No one really got a lot of home runs.” The Florida State League’s Home Run Derby is an abbreviated format compared with the slugging contest that Major League Baseball holds before its annual All-Star Game, which this year is July 14 in Cincinnati. And while Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton led all MLB hitters with 25 home runs, the four players tied for the Florida State League home run lead went into the All-Star break with 10 apiece. Up in a skybox, Port St. Lucie residents Jordin and Erin Simberlund were enjoying the event with their parents, Michael and Melissa Simberlund, and some family friends. Erin, 11, said she enjoys “watching the teamwork” in baseball, while Jordin, 17, said watching baseball gives her an opportunity “to hang out with my dad more.” Still holding tight to his prized ball while in line at a concession stand between the Home Run Derby and the game, Montgomery Calder gleefully admitted his real favorite thing about going to the ballpark was the hot dogs. Sharing a good time with his family on the eve of Father’s Day, Douglas Calder replied wistfully but with a wink, “I thought you were going to say spending time with my dad.”

Pan American Round Table of the Treasure Coast’s volunteers make a difference in the community FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TREASURE COAST — Pan American Round Table of the Treasure Coast, is an affiliate of an alliance in the Americas composed of 19 countries with 234 chapters. Here in the Your Voice coverage area, we have members from Palm City, St. Lucie West, Tesoro and Tradition. On Oct. 16, 2016, the parent Pan American Round Table, founded by Florence Griswold of Texas, celebrates its centennial. This nonprofit organization was formally initiated by a group of women, who supported Griswold in helping the women and children, who had migrated into Texas during the Mexican civil war. Griswold’s volunteers had an avowed purpose: to promote education, develop mutual knowledge, understanding and friendships. This, they believed, would help establish unity and peace among the people in the Western Hemisphere. Our Treasure Coast chapter recently commemorated its 22nd year in the community. At this event, the volunteer members very proudly wore their respective country’s traditional dress, shared their typical foods, and performed traditional dances. To say the least, it was a very festive

sure Coast chapter actively fulfills this primary mission. Several fundraising events are held yearly to generate sufficient funds to award scholarships to Martin and St. Lucie counties’ low-income, scholastically qualified students. Our goal is to award four or more scholarships yearly. Since 2014 through this coming August, the scholarships will total 10 awards for a sum of $8,500. Our organization is proud to announce that since the inception of our Pan American Round Table of the Treasure Coast scholarship program in 1994, we have awarded approximately $50,000 in scholarships. Volunteer members conscientiously work to execute successful events, i.e., dinner dances, garage sales, and most notably a stupendous fashion show, presented by the Shoppes at Harbour Bay in Stuart. At the recent fashion show, several experienced models demonstrated their respective shops’ trendy, colorful fashions to the enjoyment of the audience. The afternoon’s festivity was enhanced by a silent auction, which offered a variety of donated beautiful items. Not too many guests departed empty-handed as door prizes were also in abundance. Pan American Round Table of
the Treasure Coast is a small chapter, with a total membership of 28 volunteer women from Americas’ varied cultural backgrounds. Without the support of our membership and the local community, our fundraising events could not be realized. We extend our thanks to the local community vendors as well as our members, who generously donate gift certificates, gift baskets, and participate in our events. Our commitments do not begin and end with scholarships. We also donate gifts to children at Christmas, food baskets to low-income families at Thanksgiving, school supplies to low-income schools, clothing donations to a domestic violence shelter, etc. Pan American Round Table of the Treasure Coast meets the second Saturday of each month from September through June. Our meetings are held at alternating locations. We extend an invitation to those in the community, who wish to learn more about this Western Hemisphere organization which is about to celebrate its centennial. Please call (772) 2098805 or (772) 486-7345. Ida Gallant is the treasurer/director of scholarships/public relations for the Pan American Round Table of the Treasure Coast.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — In 2012, readers of a local newspaper named Harbor Place “Best Active Senior Community.” For Kathy Kalck, senior executive director of the Independent and Assisted Living facility, being the best is a constant goal. “We want to provide a fulfilling lifestyle for residents and a rewarding work environment for associates,” she said. “We offer customer service and hospitality, freedom from home ownership, isolation and chores. Many of our staff have been here 10-15 years, with an average of seven years. When you take care of the staff, they stay and take good care of the residents. Our dietary staff knows what every single resident likes to drink for breakfast. You can’t put a price tag on that.” Kalck said that the residents want a home-like atmosphere. “It’s like the good old days,” she said, “They’re not a number. The residents are the most important thing to us.” Kalck worked at the Harbor Place campus for seven years and

HARBOR from page 7 They’re getting more stringent.” Residents also have access to a physician, Dr. Crouch, whom many have met while in the rehabilitation center. They may use their own physicians, but many choose to continue to see Dr. Crouch when they return to assisted living. Harbor Place has many activities from which to choose. “We do a lot of outings,” Kalck said. “We go to the Kravis Center. This generation loves some of the old things. We went to see ‘South Pacific.’ Those songs were their time. It brought back good memories. One of the things we try to do is continue with great memories. Keeping family informed about their loved ones is a priority. “We have ‘Family Night’ every other month with the families of those in assisted living, to keep them up to date and answer questions,” Kalck said. “Residents and families have my cell and call me at any time. One of the biggest complaints families have is ‘I can’t reach anyone for my mom on the weekends.’ There’s a manager on duty on weekends and it’s just as smooth as on weekdays. Residents will call me and that’s OK. They’ll call if they’re not feeling well. They know somebody’s there.”
Kalck keeps tabs on services available in the community. When a new urgent care facility opened near Harbor Place, Kalck went there, unannounced, to see how things worked and how long the wait was. “I was very happy with the service,” she said. “It took five minutes to get an X-ray. That’s what I want for my residents.” Harbor Place offers three meals a day to those in assisted living and a full breakfast and dinner for those in “Independent Living.” There is also a café. Dietary restrictions are adhered to. “We have sugar-free ice cream,” Kalck said. “Too many times, diabetics don’t get that treat. We get sugar-free ice cream for them. We do special things. We get homemade ice cream every day. It’s the little things that matter.” To that end, Kalck and her staff maintain close ties with families. “We call families that are out of state,” she said. “A two-second call can make a difference. Families email me. They have a direct line to me and to the RN in assisted living. It’s so, so important. If they don’t live here and their loved one goes to the hospital, we keep them up to date.” Spiritual needs are also important at Harbor Place, which has a chaplain, Jerry Humphrey, on staff.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Banks and other businesses may not be able to prevent all robberies, such as the one earlier this month at Wells Fargo in Tradition, but they can take steps to reduce the chances of such a crime or that an employee will be injured, authorities say. The robbery earlier this month involved a man walking into the Wells Fargo Bank, 10330 S.W. Village Center Drive, in Tradition, handing a note to the teller, demanding cash and then leaving, according to a report on WPTV.com. The robber, later identified as Charles Allen Ziegler, 40, was fatally shot in Pompano Beach by a Broward County deputy after he pulled out a gun when confronted by law enforcement, according to local10.com. Port St. Lucie police had identified

PREVENTION from page 10 vent such a robbery. If a bank employee, or an employee at any other business, notices a customer acting oddly, they can call law enforcement before the robbery occurs, he said. Employees should make eye contact with everyone who enters, he said. “They (the employee) can watch their body language to see what they are doing,” Hoffman said. Another key is how a customer is dressed, he said. If it’s hot outside and someone walks in wearing a coat, that could be a sign, Hoffman said. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office recommends in a training document posted on the Internet that banks: • Place a greeter by the front door. • Enforce a policy of no hats/ sunglasses. • Install security cameras outside of bank to cover parking lot area and back/sides of bank. • Install a security camera at the front door about 5 ½ to 6 feet high to catch facial shot of suspect leaving • Switch up procedures for bait money. • Look at possibility of installing double security doors at entrance.
• Employees at other businesses may be vulnerable if they don’t take precautions, Hoffman said. • When making a night deposit, employees should go in teams, as opposed to one person, he said. Hoffman also suggests that they travel different routes to the bank. “They should make sure there is no money left in cash drawers after closing,” he said. Businesses also should make regular deposits so as to avoid having a lot of cash on hand during business hours, he said. It’s also important to keep visibility good at night, he said. That includes lighting in the parking lot and avoiding having signs on the window that would prevent someone from being able to see inside the business from outside, Hoffman said. At night, he said, most businesses, except those that are family-owned, are required to have two employees. But, Hoffman added, that he would strongly recommend that family-owned businesses adhere to that. Businesses can reduce the chance of robbery at night by having people pay for gas through a window with bullet-proof glass, he said.

PREVENTION from page 11 Both Hoffman and Stacy Patton, crime prevention technician for the Port St. Lucie Police Department, said their agencies offer free security surveys for businesses. Port St. Lucie Police Department crime prevention employees “will go out to the location and conduct a complete inspection of doors, windows, entry points, locks etc. to identify vulnerable locations. These may be physical vulnerabilities (such as weak locks or unsecured entry points) or operational vulnerabilities (such as cash handling and personnel related policies and procedures),” Patton said in an email. She said it won’t prevent all crime, but “it’s an excellent tool to help further secure the business and protect it from crime.” The department also has an alert system that notifies businesses if a pattern of crime is occurring in their vicinities, she said. In the future, she said, they will be able to target certain types of businesses if the crimes are part of a pattern involving those particular types of enterprises. Businesses can register at alertregistration.com/stluciecofl/.

TREASURE COAST — Michael Durham, Martin’s county attorney, said local legal challenges against All Aboard Florida are on track despite what may look like a derailment to some. “The case isn’t lost,” he said. “It’s the preliminary injunction wasn’t granted on that case.” On June 10, U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper denied Martin’s request for a preliminary injunction against the Department of Transportation’s allocation of private activity bonds for All Aboard Florida, the controversial proposed high-speed rail expected to run passengers between Orlando and Miami through the Treasure Coast. “The judge said we stumbled the attempt at the show harm,” Durham said. “We’re still on our feet.”

Rusty Roberts, vice president of government affairs, said it’s All Aboard Florida’s policy not to comment on litigation. The county’s suit isn’t against the company, but the federal government. The Martin County Commission filed suit on April 27. It tapped a $1.4 million opposition fund it created to file the suit against the U.S. Department of Transportation challenging the private activity bonds it OK’d late last year for All Aboard Florida to raise capital. Indian River County — which set up a $2.7 million fund to oppose All Aboard Florida — has filed a separate lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Transportation and one or its undersecretaries for giving All Aboard Florida the green light to sell up to $1.75 billion in bonds through the Florida Development Finance Corp., FDFC, before the agency

TREASURE COAST — Palm Beach County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay is running for Congress. “I was motivated by the opportunity to carry on (Patrick Murphy’s) good work for the district,” she said. The Democrat said the 18th Congressional District needs an eclectic Representative. “It’s very rural in nature, although it’s developed on the coastline,” she said. That rural nature, McKinlay said, means that the district needs a lot of attention to infrastructure and economic development. Six Republicans have announced their aims to make Congressman Murphy’s seat red in 2016, and about 10 are known to, or strongly suspected of, considering it. The Republican field for the 18th Congressional District could run out of elbow and leg room, just as it had in 2014. On the Republican side, Martin County School Board member Rebecca Negron, St. Lucie Coun-
ty Commissioner Tod Mowery, and the 2014 Republican nominee and former State Representative Carl Domino have all announced candidacies. The Florida Division of Elections lists only Domino and Negron on the Republican side, so far. Three others have announced candidacies on YouTube or Facebook. They are Brian Mast, Rick Kozell and Paul Spain. Palm City’s K.C. Traylor — of Florida Not All Aboard fame — has announced on her Facebook page that she is “deeply considering running for Congress.” Traylor is Republican, but appeared in ads for Democrat Murphy. Another prominent name on the list of likely Republican primary candidates is Martin County Commissioner Doug Smith. Hobe Sound businessman Gary Uber is another that might be in the coming Republican primary, as is State Representative Gayle Harrell. Another Republican name from 2014, Alan Schlesinger, is also named among likely candidates fir ‘16. On the Democratic side, McKinlay faces Stuart’s John “Juan”

Group helping homeless vets could sure use help themselves Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER
mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com
TREASURE COAST — HouseA-Vet began life in December of 2013, and officially became a nonprofit just under a year ago. It reached a major goal with the donation of a mobile home in Stuart, which, with the help of the St. Lucie West Home Depot, it renovated to be able to accommodate up to three homeless veterans for up to 90 days. The group that originated in Martin County is expanding its reach into St. Lucie County. Members Additionally, House-A-Vet performs building projects large and small, anywhere from fixing a World War II widow’s running toilet to building a ramp for a disabled Vietnam veteran, said director Kevin Donahue, who, along with his colleagues — like co-founders Lawrence “Radar” McPhillips, assistant director, secretary John Wharton Jr. and Pete “Palm City Pete” Ellis — has a background in the building trades.

Fourth from left is House-A-Vet member John ‘Johnny O’ Osberg; fifth, Scotty ‘Scooter’ Satterthwaite; sixth, Pete ‘Palm City Pete’ Ellis; and 10th, Larry ‘Radar’ McPhillips. “We could definitely use an electrician (volunteer), though,” Donahue said. Indeed, volunteers — and donations — are sorely needed by House-A-Vet.
A fundraiser is planned for July 25 at AMVETS Post 92, Rio, from 6 to 10 p.m. It’ll be a “Beef and Beer” feast, featuring hot roastbeef sandwiches. “One hundred percent of the
proceeds will go back to (the program),” Donahue said. More fundraising projects will be planned down the road, but as

Donahue is wearing many different hats for the group, getting them going is just one of many demands on his time. Home Depot provides grants for major projects — “they’ve been very good to us” — but take time, usually several weeks, to take shape into an actual project. Donations make up the bulk of other costs, including the maintenance of the home for homeless veterans, which Donahue said “costs around $700 a month, including insurance and utilities.” “We don’t get anything from the county or the state, so it’s (donations of) $5 here, $10 there.” Kevin Donahue, director, HouseA-Vet House-A-Vet fixes veterans’ and their spouses’ home problems at no cost to them — but still costs must be paid. “We don’t get anything from the county or the state, so it’s (donations of) $5 here, $10 there,” he said. So far, 25 veterans have been helped by the group, which includes veterans who have been housed in the mobile home and through other projects. “We replaced the windows on this one Vietnam veteran’s house who had saved up to pay a contractor, (who) never followed through,” Donahue said. “That was a $15,000 job.” Another involved putting in a ramp outside the home of a disabled Vietnam veteran, Richard Trainor. “He had been housebound for three months before that,” Donahue said. “He depended on a walker and a wheelchair, and he had these rickety steps. We had the materials and 18 guys, and we put up his ramp in six hours.” An upcoming project involves building a fence for a veteran’s spouse. “The original fence blew down in a storm,” Donahue said. “She has a disabled granddaughter, who apparently runs around naked, and the next-door neighbor (has been ogling her).” Last year, House-A-Vet gave 4,000 man hours, and this year
“it looks to be around 8,000, not including hours donated to Habitat for Humanity building homes for veterans,” Donahue said. House-A-Vet works with Tony Reese and Wayne Teegardin, veteran service officers of Martin and St. Lucie counties, respectively, to identify veterans in need. HouseA-Vet helps hands-on, while the county service officers direct veterans to benefits and programs they may be eligible to receive. Outreach is one area House-AVet wants to expand on, Donahue said. “Next month, we’re going to work with American Legion Riders from Post 318 (Port St. Lucie) to learn more about it, and try to bring it to Martin County.” Besides donations, House-AVet needs more volunteers, not only to help on projects, but also fundraising. When asked whether he could use the help of some enterprising auxiliary member, retired with time on her hands and creative energy, he said he certainly could. “Oh, yes, definitely. We could use someone going after corporate sponsorships as well.” Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. are Habitat for Humanity work days, while Thursdays from 7:30 to 8 a.m. onward are home maintenance project work days. Those wishing to donate to House-A-Vet can click on the “donate” button at houseavet.org, or mail checks or money orders to House-A-Vet, P.O. Box 1467, Stuart, FL 34995. Donahue said he hopes some veterans’ organization will take the House-A-Vet idea nationwide. Until that time, it remains a Martin- and St. Lucie-county-based group. The money is getting tighter, though. Donahue has invested a great deal of his own finances. “If we can’t get more funds in the next few weeks, we may have to massively scale back, or even discontinue (the program),” he said. “If everyone reading this would just go to our website (or put a check in the mail), and contribute even a dollar,” it will help immensely.

where the tides are changing, and are grateful that people continue to shed light on this topic. We want audiences to realize that everyone plays an important role in changing this culture in which sexual violence thrives. This documentary sends the strong message that it takes all of us, working together in big and small ways, to prevent sexual violence.” From the Academy Award-nominated filmmaking team behind “The Invisible War” comes a startling exposé of sexual assault on U.S. campuses, institutional cover-ups and the brutal social toll on victims and their families. “The Hunting Ground” debuted in January at the Sundance Film Festival and is being released by RADiUS and CNN Films. TREASURE COAST — It is believed that more than 100,000 college students will be sexually assaulted during the coming school year. Only 5 percent of campus assaults are reported. Today, 82 schools are being investigated for violations of Title IX. Serial predators will commit an average of six assaults during their college years. The Inner Truth Project will partner with Oscar-nominated filmmakers Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering and their film “The Hunting Ground” to increase awareness around preventing sexual violence on college campuses. The collaboration coincides with the start of summer as many students start to make college visits and many seniors prepare to leave for home in the fall. To kick off their partnership, The Inner Truth Project and “The Hunting Ground” — along with co-sponsors the Sexual Assault Assistance Program — will host a panel discussion after a debut showing of the film at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, at The Inner Truth Project, 2190 Reserve Park Trace, No. 13, St. Lucie West. The panel discussion will feature educators from area institutions, including Dr. Sharon Hayes from Keiser University and Dr. Patricia Corey-Sousa from Indian River State College. ‘The Hunting Ground” is a remarkable documentary that truly examines the widespread and secretive problem of campus sexual assault,” IRSC Health & Wellness director Dr. Corey-Souza said. “We have reached a crucial time

CANDIDATE from page 15 Xuna and fellow Palm Beach County Commissioner Priscilla Taylor. Xuna is the only Democratic candidate the state lists. The congressional district covers St. Lucie and Martin counties, along with a sliver of Palm Beach County’s northern side. McKinlay, who lives a little outside the district, moved to the area 11 years ago from Sarasota. She moved with her family from Massachusetts in 1977. McKinlay said that while she’s a freshman commissioner, she’s worked in federal and state government all her career. Among other things, she worked in the Florida Department of Community Affairs and as a legislative aide to Senator Bill Nelson. “The No. 1 issue (facing the district) is the environment,” McKinlay said. She said the familiar issues of nutrient-rich water making its way into the St. Lucie and Indian rivers is the largest of those environmental concerns. “It affects health,” she said. “It affects economic development, and it affects tourism,” McKinlay said. She said making progress on the Central Everglades Restoration Plan is important to solve the problem.
“I think Patrick (Murphy) has done a fabulous job with other members of Congress to secure funding for projects,” McKinlay said. “That needs to continue.” However, she said there are more immediate solutions and a way to find them. She hopes to do roundtables with people in the agriculture business and water restoration. “Get all the players around the table to do some long-term planning and also get some quick turnaround projects going,” she said. McKinlay said the biggest issue facing the country is the growing income gulf. “The disappearing American middle class,” she said. The 44-year-old said she doesn’t have specific plans for addressing the income gulf and is in a listening mode. Most congressional candidates will likely aim to qualify by petition. Vicki Davis, Martin County’s Supervisor of Elections, said candidates for the 18th Congressional District who want to qualify by petition need to gather 4,854 signatures by next year. She said signers are free in primaries and general elections, 2016, to vote for candidates other than those they signed qualifying petitions for. It only means that a petition signer is helping a
candidate qualify for a run without having to pay the filing fee, 6 percent of the annual salary of the office sought. The current salary of a rank-and-file member of Congress is $174,000. It’s been that since 2009. Those who don’t collect the needed signatures would have to pay nearly $10,500 to qualify. McKinlay is single and has three teenage children. She lives in Royal Palm Beach. She is looking to relocate to Stuart if she wins the election. A spokeswoman at the Florida Department of State previously told Your Voice News & Views there are no rules against running for Congress in a district one doesn’t reside in. “A state may not impose any further restrictions on qualifying for U.S. Representative than those found in the Constitution,” Brittany Lesser said in an emailed response to queries. “Thus, a person need not reside in the Congressional district in which they are running.” The Constitution requires that a Representative be a citizen of the United States for at least seven years, be at least 25, and reside in the state from which her or she is elected to the House. McKinlay has a Facebook page. She’ll soon have a website at www.votemckinley.com.

TRAINS from page 14 had completed evaluation of the impact statement. The FDFC has repeatedly canceled hearings about issuing the private activity bonds and is mired in issues surrounding whether it can. “There have some procedural issues with their board members,” Durham said. Among other things, Durham said none of the FDFC board members haven’t filed proper financial reports. “Some don’t meet the statutory requirements to sit on the
board,” the county attorney said. In a letter on behalf of Citizens Against Rail Expansion in Florida sent to the parent agency, Enterprise Florida, attorney Stephen Ryan — who represents Martin County in its legal actions against the transportation department — noted that the Florida Development Finance Corp. lacks three bankers nominated by the agency and selected by the governor. Additionally, Ryan highlighted that the Florida Senate hasn’t confirmed most of the FDFC board members, among other things. Durham and the Indian River
County Attorney, Dylan Reingold, co-signed that letter. “The private activity bond are just a tax-free bond,” Durham said. “Not getting the bonds, in theory that it would not stop (All Aboard Florida) from going forward.” But, All Aboard Florida would be the first privately-run highspeed passenger rail service in the nation for many decades. Investors will want as much potential benefit as possible on what can seem to be a hard roll of the dice. Tax-free bonds would sweeten the deal. “They’ve said the (private-activity) bonds are the linchpin to
their operation,” Durham said. At its May 5 regular meeting, the St. Lucie County Commission joined its neighbors to the north and south by setting aside $500,000 to combat the proposed high-speed passenger train slated to run 32 trips a day between Miami and Orlando. The company plans on starting limited service between West Palm Beach and Miami by next year. By 2017 the company hopes to have trains going the entire proposed 235-mile route, mostly on existing Florida East Coast Industry rails along the Indian River.
Port St Lucie, FL- The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have generic names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, or Cymbalta and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects.

As you can see in Figure 2 , as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning and many additional symptoms. l blood these very smal Figure2: When seased they begin di e vessels becom the nerves begin to d to shrivel up an . te ra ne ge de
The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage then your condition can been treated
In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined. 1. What is the underlying cause? 2. How Much Nerve Damage Has Been Sustained. NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is nothing that we can do for you.
3. How much treatment will your condition require?
The treatment that is provided at our clinic has three main goals: 1. Increase blood flow
The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here on the Treasure Coast that offers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (see the special neruopathy severity examination at the end of this article)
2. Stimulates small fiber nerves
Dr. John Silva will be offering this neuropathy severity examination to the first 15 callers Call to make an appointment with Dr. Silva to determine if your peripheral neuropathy can be treated.

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow.
Dr. John Silva at The Neuropathy Relief Center will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy.
3. Decrease brain-based pain Part o or treatment protocol lizes a specialized low level light (L.E.D.) therapy to increase blood flow as well as treatments to heal the nerve damage.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Tourism is increasing in St. Lucie County and PGA Village is at the forefront of that, said Charlotte Bireley, tourism and venues manager. Bireley said that golf tourism is a major part of the tourism in St. Lucie County. People come not only to golf, but because they want to visit St. Lucie County, Bireley said. The improving economy and the rough winters up north are factors that are helping to improve tourism here, Bireley said. As proof of the increase, tourism tax collections have increased from $2 million to $3 million since 2010, according to a Power Point presentation during Tourism Week. The collections increased steadily during that period to $2.6 million in 2012, but dropped to $2.5 million in 2013 before rebounding

last year. The $3 million in collections was an all-time high for St. Lucie County, she said. “We have so much to celebrate in St. Lucie County when it comes to tourism this year,” she said in a press release. “The county’s tourism activity is better than ever and is continuing upward. I really believe our local tourism-related businesses are reaping the benefits.” Bireley said that increased tourism has meant more demand for hotel rooms and higher rates because of that. The average daily rate has increased from $74.20 in 2010 to $81.98 in 2014. Another sign of improving tour-

ism is the interest in St. Lucie County. Figures from the Power Point presentation show that the number of visitors to the county’s tourism website increased from 97,951 in 2010 to 124,602 in 2014. Bireley said one reason that people visit the area is affordability. “We are not a high-priced destination,” she said. Downtown Fort Pierce, the National Navy UDT/ SEAL Museum, the beaches and the proximity to Miami and Orlando make St. Lucie County an affordable destination. “We have a lot of visitors who come here to fish,” he said. She said good rankings in Forbes magazine and USA Today for St. Lucie County have helped.

Don Bestor Blues Society work together as a family all year long to bring opportunities for great, professional and cutting-edge jazz and blues performances. We believe strongly and passionately in this very American art form, and we don’t mind sharing our talents and dedicating a portion of our time to giving back to the community in the form of performances, master classes, and raising funds for the musicians of the future to further their music education. Chances are pretty good that someone helped each one of us along the way in our path towards music, so we are happy to do the same for the next generation without seeking attention or spotlight to validate our efforts. However, when it happens, just as it did last month at the 211 Awards, we were as humbled and happy as we are when we hear a student like Austin Routten, wailing away on his tenor saxophone during an on-stage audition for a Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society scholarship. We were touched by the support from the community in much the same way as we are every year when Tom and Kathy,

t’s hard to render a stage performer speechless, but that’s exactly what happened last month, as Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society was recognized as an Exceptional Non-Profit in the Arts by 211 HelpLine at the Jewels of the Treasure Coast Awards. Eight-time Emmy Award Winner Michael Williams of WPTV News Channel 5 was the keynote speaker, and the room was filled with representatives from many of the area’s nonprofit organizations. Before they even announced the winners of the awards, I took a minute to look around the room at all of the individuals and groups who work hard all year long to help improve conditions in our community. It was pretty moving — I mean, we all know there are volunteers and organizations that try to help out with children, seniors, pets, and emergencies, but to be sitting in a room surrounded by individuals and teams of people who donate their time, talent and treasure helping others and sharing of their bounty was pretty awe-inspiring. For Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues to have been nominated was a thrill, but to hear our name called as an Exceptional Non-Profit in the Arts was quite a surprise for all of the volunteers at our table. So even though many of us make our living in front of an audience and are not fazed by the footlights, this was a moment that rendered us speechless. All of us at Fort Pierce Jazz &

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — When teacher and stand-up comic Mike Rivera was named “America’s Most Hilarious Teacher,” through a competition on “The View,” he found himself hanging out with Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Lily Tomlin and Sigourney Weaver. Each told him how much teachers had meant to them and their success. “Everyone I met let me know how inspirational their teachers were and gave me props for that,” he said. Rivera, an American History teacher at a middle school in Pinellas County, has been honing the arts of teaching and comedy for many years. He brings his stand up to the Comedy Club in the Black Box Theatre of the Sunrise Theatre June 27 and spoke recently by phone about his dual careers. “American history was my passion,” he said. “I grew up in the Hudson Valley in New York reading encyclopedias. One of the biggest challenges is getting kids to

She knew I was ‘the teacher guy.’ You have to play it cool, but you want to start screaming, ‘Oh, my God!’” Rivera’s success was big news at his school and he expected to
return home to high-fives. When he walked into the school, everyone screamed, but when he walked into his class, there was complete silence. “I brought out my stool, which is the signal to talk,” Rivera said. “Finally, one kid asked, ‘Are you leaving us?’ Seconds later, another said, ‘Yeah, are you gonna leave?’ I was so taken aback. It affected me. It was the first time I really knew how much impact I have on my students. I said, “No, I’m not going to leave.’” I realized I wasn’t going to leave my kids.” His presence on “The View” has led to increased bookings. During the school year, he usually works two weekends a month. During the summer, he works nonstop. He has also started doing ‘teacher shows,’ where he and several others do comedy centered on schools and teaching, “That’s really taking off,” he said. “All the comics want a niche. I’ve had it all along.” He has also gotten a book deal and is in the editing stage of “From Stand-Up Comic to StandUp Teacher.” “It’s about using strategies from stand-up comedy and putting them in the classroom,” he said. “You don’t have to be a standup comic. You can do it your way, I’m giving a structure. It’s

From the team behind THE INVISIBLE WAR, comes a startling exposé of sexual assaults on U.S. campuses, institutional cover-ups and the brutal social toll on victims and their families. Weaving together verité footage and first-person testimonies, the film follows survivors as they pursue their education while fighting for justice — despite harsh retaliation, harassment and pushback at every level.

Since entering the Hearing Healthcare field I have learned quite a bit. Not from the books or schools I’ve attended but from my clients! With very few exceptions the folks that have been to other hearing aid providers tell me that they felt “sold” and that the concern Joe Mutter, H.A.S. seemed to be about how quickly they could sign the order forms to buy hearing aids.
