TRADITION — The courtroom wrangling has come to an end. The accusations on the part of Digital Domain of schem-
ing proved unfounded and the decision has been handed down. According to a mediator’s report issued in April, embattled chairman John Textor and his Tradition company Digital Domain, were cleared of any fraudulent activities or conspiracy that
led to the company’s closure in 2012. Digital Domain Media Group was a spin-off of Digital Domain, a California based visual effects studio that worked on films such

ST. LUCIE — The city of Port St. Lucie may have learned a hard lesson. Maybe prospects with the City Center have missed their boat. Or maybe the city just wants to see what shakes out of the market. On May 9, the PSL City Council decided to forgo purchasing the 22 City Center parcels owned by Lily Zhong, and currently held in hock by the Securities Exchange Commission due to allegations that she’s defrauded international investors of millions. “It’s really important that this next move be the correct move,” said PSL Mayor Gregory Oravec. “I think it’s right to take a longterm approach to this, not to rush into spending more public money because we feel we have to do something.” This possibly prudent move could not come at a more poignant time, with the lawsuit the city and state brought against Digital Domain reaching closure less than two weeks afterward on May 20, and the VGTI building

Fire chief makes pitch for approving assessment STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Voters will decide in the August 30 primary election whether to authorize a special assessment to help fund the St. Lucie County Fire District. Chief Buddy Emerson told the Port St. Lucie City Council why they should. He made a presentation at the council’s May 23 meeting. “The district needs a stable source of income,” Emerson told the council. The district is funded through property taxes and ambulance billing. The proposed assessment would be linked not to homes’ and commercial buildings’ values, as property taxes usually are, but on size or type. If voters approve the referendum, starting 2017 residential buildings would be assessed annually at a maximum of $50 a dwelling. Vacant land $22.77 for less than 160 acres and 10 cents for each acre exceeding that to 640. Commercial buildings would
be assessed at 9 cent a square foot, and institutional facilities 11 cents a square foot. Not-for-profit organizations, such as churches, would be exempt. The district’s Board of Commissioners approved putting the assessment to voters back in April. Emerson told the city council that while revenues for the district’s share of property taxes dropped from $57 million in 2006 to $36 million in 2010, its calls for service kept increasing. The district’s share of property tax revenue — which is capped at $3 for every $1,000 of assessed, non-exempt property value — has increased since then. In the 2014-2015 fiscal year it was slightly more than $40 million. However, the rebound since the Great Recession hasn’t kept pace with the increasing volume of calls straining equipment. “The fire district will exceed 50,000 calls for service this year,” Emerson told the council. “A first.” Emerson said the district needs

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Ask Wayne Gent for one word to describe his first year as superintendent of the St. Lucie Public Schools and he says, “Awesome.” The superintendent is excited about some of the district’s accomplishments and looking forward to tackling some of the challenges the district faces in the coming years. Gent took some time to assess his first year as it comes to a close. “We are going to see our graduation rates for high school rise for this year,” he said. “The goal is to surpass the state average and make significant gains. The data looks really good. I attribute it to a heavy emphasis on strategies for monitoring and supporting seniors and making sure that each senior has an adult mentoring their academic performance and absences.” The district is waiting for data on state assessments and anticipates there is still work to be done. “There will be some increases with third graders and we’re moving in the right direction,” he said. “We’re not where we need to be. Third grade is critical. Next year, we’ll work on pre-K3rd grade literacy. We’re going to enlist the support of outside volunteers, in conjunction with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, to come in and help with literacy in the younger ages. “Unfortunately, a large portion enter kindergarten without the necessary skills and the first time they enter the school system, they lag behind. It’s critical within the first three years to get them to proficiency. The goal is for 3rd graders to be reading at a proficient level as measured by the state. That’s our biggest challenge.” Gent cited several other accomplishments for this year. “We were able at the beginning of the year to settle the bargaining and give raises before the year began,” he said. “We also reduced our overall suspension rates. We had more than 2700 high school grads in the district and they
Wayne Gent received $21 million in scholarships to the finest schools and colleges.” Next year, the district will undertake an initiative to assist students with behavioral problems that impact learning. “We’re going to come up with programs to assist kids with behavioral problems,” he said. “We want to get to the root cause of some of the issues. The phrase is not original with me, but a child’s first and best teacher should be their parents. That’s not always the case. We want to find out why they’re behaving that way and find it out while keeping our schools safe and having a great learning environment.” In May, Treasure Coast High School was evacuated for a bomb scare and Gent said safety is always the priority. “We believe our schools are very safe,” he said. “We work closely with local law enforcement, including the Sheriff’s Office and the Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce police. We have strengthened the partnerships. This is a national issue and individuals need to know we will prosecute.” For 2016-2017, the focus will be on literacy and graduation rates. “We’re continuing to build partnerships with community groups and agencies to strengthen some and get some new ones,” Gent

St. Lucie West — Somerset College Preparatory Academy is a public charter high school, which is overseen by the St. Lucie County School Board. Currently, the academy is located on the IRSC Pruitt Campus at 501 NW University Boulevard, in St. Lucie West. Plans for a new 1,500 student capacity campus in St. Lucie West, located at NW California and NW Peacock, were approved by the City of Port St. Lucie, Planning and Zoning Board on September 2, 2014. The Academy’s principal, Erika Rains explained, “Somerset participates in all State standardized tests, including FSA and FCAT. However, there are no bi-weekly benchmark tests and they are not required to follow the District’s scope and sequence.” The first year of operation, Somerset
was a “C” school and opened with Grade 9th. This year is the academy’s fourth year in business and has maintained “A” status for two years. In addition, the Academy projects to remain at the “A” status for the current school year. Rains remarked, “It is one of two “A” high schools in St. Lucie County; the second is Lincoln Park Academy (LPA).” Somerset is accepting applications for next year. There is no tuition fee, due to the public funding. On May 4, 2016, which was proclaimed National Charter School Week, Somerset College Preparatory Academy was presented with the Florida Charter School Alliance A+ Award. In addition, U.S. News and World Report released the 2016 America’s Best High School list, on which Somerset College Prep Academy received national ranking as a Bronze Medal school. partment of Education STEM programs, such as Biomedical Sciences and Information Technologies. Approximately 17 percent of the courses are advanced placement courses. Each year, eight students are selected to visit John Hopkins Dean’s Symposium to enhance their learning experience. Dual enrollment is very strong at Somerset, with 28 percent of students taking advantage of the opportunity. Many unique opportunities are available to the students. Rains shared, “The Academy’s students are very active in the community. Students have enjoyed the opportunity to intern with local attorneys. They have also volunteered in the CNN Republican room in Miami during a recent televised GOP debate. Additionally, students worked on Governor Rick Scott’s campaign and with the League of Women Voters moderating a debate.” Somerset has an active Stu-
dent Government Association. In regards to sports, Somerset has a basketball and volleyball teams, a golf club, and competitive cheerleading. This is an exciting year for Somerset, because recently on May 28, the founding class of 81 students were the first to graduate from the academy. On May 10, the St. Lucie County School Board renewed Somerset’s High School license for 5 more years. However, requests for consideration of a Middle School were delayed. The St. Lucie County School Board plans to bring the issue to the Fourth District Court of Appeals, although the State Board of Education previously overruled the District’s denial of the middle school application.

the actual value of the properties is $5.3 million. Goldberg as SEC appointed handler has the option to sell all or some of the parcels, file bankruptcy, or return the assets to Zhong pending litigation or failure to sell. If the parcels go back to Zhong, Oravec says never fear. She will still have to pay all of the special assessments and accrued taxes. Either that or the county will resume a tax deed sale begun just before the freeze, in which case the county could recoup some losses, and the property could go back to the city anyway. Buying the parcels right now, however, may allow the city to exert more control over the future of the City Center project — some parcels of which the city already trespasses on — and might prevent a cherry-picking extravaganza, as Councilman Ron Bowen fears. Nonetheless, allowing the market to dictate the future of the parcels may provide more options, or at least more information without any cost, said Mullin, and the council unanimously agreed. If the city were to purchase the parcels outright, they could restore some marketability to the properties with the help of Error and Insolvency write-offs, a process whereby the city could forgive some of the accrued debt, bringing the price for a potential buyer down to $3.5 million. Last month, the city and state’s
back on the market, a reminder of last year’s epic investment blunder. Under the direction of John Fumero, acting city attorney, attorney Tom Mullin gave a presentation at the May 9 council meeting that outlined three options for Port St. Lucie: Buy all 22 City Center parcels outright, buy a targeted selection of parcels, or let potential purchase play out in the hands of the SEC-appointed receiver, Michael Goldberg. PSL chose the last option. For Mark Gotz, a St. Lucie West resident who spoke out at the meeting, this seems the best decision. “The city’s looking at a piece of property that you should basically get for nothing,” Gotz said. “Michael Goldberg does not have an asset in those properties. He has a liability. Nobody’s going to buy a property for $20 million dollars and build a strip center. The numbers don’t work. So consequently, my encouragement to the council is to sit back and play your cards close to the chest. You’ve got all the aces in the deck. I wouldn’t pay a penny for it. It’s going to come back to you one way or another.” Twenty out of the 22 parcels were described by Mullin as “upside-down.” The overall cost of the parcels is upwards of $19 million in special assessments, taxes, and interest that have accrued over the years, whereas

lawsuit against Digital Domain came to a close and yielded a meager $3 million to the city, in comparison to the more than $58 million the city dumped into the now defunct production studio in tax incentives and real property. Even with the $13 million Christ Fellowship paid the city to move into the building last July, PSL is still out $35 million on this investment. Another recent development for the city is that the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute building is back on the market. The biotech facility, having begun to bleed in 2012, only two years after PSL borrowed $64 million in incentive bonds to help the company, finally gave up the ghost last October. Failing to secure lucrative partnerships, suffering state cuts in June 2015 that also affected Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies, and afflicted with a communication breakdown with the city that led the city attorney at the time to respond to a $21 billion bailout request with a lawsuit to prevent them from moving out — all this sent VGTI packing and leaving the 100,000-square foot, highly specialized facility vacant. Now the courts have appointed a receiver, Michael Imber, to market the building, and he in turn has recruited the services of Colliers International South Florida. While PSL has an invested interest in the outcome of the property, since currently upwards of $130 million is owed the city by VGTI, here is another example where the city is taking a more backseat approach. Regarding a potential City Center negotiation, however, the city doesn’t have to play a totally passive role, says Oravec. Without having to buy the property themselves, they could help broker purchase of the parcels among third-party investors by introducing them to the SEC receiver, or to the county for tax deed purchase, once the assets thaw. “We don’t have to sit here with our hands folded on our lap,” Oravec said. “We could be doing something, and what we should be doing is facilitating. Because hopefully if history has taught us anything, it’s that we should no longer be trying to dictate to the private market what happens at City Center.” Though the City Center is referenced in the 2030 strategic plan projections for the city, and City Center Development is listed as a priority, it may be that the original vision of a town center at that location is obsolete. FIRE from page A3 to replace 27 fire trucks and two stations in the next four years. The fleet is made up of trucks that are 2006 and older model years. The oldest is 1989. The replacement cost is projected to be $13 million. The two stations, $5 million. Additionally, the chief said that most of the bunker gear in the department is a decade old or more. Two members of the council said they’ve had to call for medical emergencies in the last year or so. Ron Bowen was one. “It’s a very sobering presentation you gave tonight,” he told the chief. Vice Mayor Linda Bartz said she’s convinced to vote for the assessment. “We all think it’s not going to be us,” she said. “But at some point, it always is us.” In an interview after the meeting, the chief said that Station 14 — 300 N.W. California Blvd. — is an example of the aging stations needing updated equipment. It was built in 1997 and has one of the largest response areas. That goes from East Bayshore Boulevard to West Rangeline Road and Midway Road to Del Rio Boulevard. Since the station was built, St. Lucie West has grown and is now almost at its complete capac-
ity for residential and commercial properties. “It takes more than one station to respond (to many calls),” the chief said. “It’s not just what may be at your station, but what’s in other stations.” Station 14 has a fire engine, brush truck and rescue truck, along with Ladder 14. “It’s our largest platform,” Emerson said. “It’s the only one of its kind that we have.” The ladder truck was purchased about the time the station was constructed. Emerson said that the district’s board of commissioners would annually set the assessment rate. At present, it could raise up to $9 million a year for the district. More about the proposed assessment is at www.slcfiresafetyfacts. com.

TREASURE COAST — There’s about a 33-square-mile blue-green algae bloom in Lake Okeechobee. At press time, there’s still no word on whether it’s into the South Fork of the St. Lucie River. Mark Perry, executive director of the Florida Oceanographic Society, said as the Memorial Day weekend approached folks were calling to find out if they could hit the water safely. That doesn’t float well with Perry. “People should be outraged that the (South Florida Water Management District) and (Florida Department of Environmental Protection) are not out informing the public,” he said. “People are calling us.”

Perry said the state’s environmental department and the local water-management district seem blithe about the possibility of a spreading algae bloom that could grow in toxicity. “It’s frustrating because neither the district or the Department of Environmental Protection have committed to saying we’ll be out there and keep the public up to speed on how big the bloom is,” Perry said. Dee Ann Miller, a spokeswoman at the state’s environmental department, sharply disagreed. “That is totally inaccurate,” she said in an emailed response to queries. She added, “Week before last, South Florida Water Management District staff observed an algal bloom on the south side of

Lake Okeechobee during a routine sampling trip. The district’s lab expedited analysis to identify the algal species. The species was identified as a blue-green algae and preliminary results indicate low levels (3.9 microgram/liter) of microcystin, which the algal species sometimes produces. The World Health Organization (WHO) considers levels under 10 microgram/liter to represent a low-level risk for adverse health outcomes from short-term recreational exposures; however, certain sensitive populations (e.g., children, the elderly and immunocompromised populations) may still be at risk even at low concentrations and

That’s where water from the C44 enters the St. Lucie River. Two days later, the institute found suspected blue-green algae at the Palm City Bridge, about six miles north of the lock. Then others started spotting it on the South Fork. At press time, state agencies haven’t confirmed that samples from the St. Lucie are cyanobacteria, commonly called blue-green algae. Ultimately he chose the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center at Martin Health, in part because it featured the TrueBeam Radiotherapy System.
“TrueBeam was one of the reasons we wanted to come here. As it turned out, this was the best place for me.” As a not-for-profit health care provider, Martin Health System is able to provide technology like TrueBeam through philanthropy that benefits patients such as Larry. as “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Tron:Legacy.” Textor and a group of investors spun off the Florida version to focus on creating digital human likenesses for stage and screen and to extend the work to include a Pixar-like animation arm. They sought and were awarded incentives from the state of Florida through funds that encourage big employers to relocate to Florida. Textor says all of those negotiations were on the up-and-up. “If we had done anything wrong, I and other members of the management team would be forced to pay something. I am required to pay nothing. The state is getting a distribution of the assets of the estate, not from me.” The court findings, written by mediator Bruce Greer, echo Textor’s assertion that his goal was never nefarious. “There has been no finding of fact that DDMG (Digital Domain Media group) directors or officers or any other party violated the law or otherwise misled investors, creditors or governmental agencies and entities.” Greer stated in his report. Textor says the findings prove to be more than just a victory. They’re validation that his vision was, and is, always a top priority. As part of the terms of the bankruptcy settlement, even Textor is awarded money to recoup losses from his investments. He retains the name “Tradition Studios”, as well as any related trademarks, curricula and lesson plans associated with the Digital Domain Institute (The school Textor also envisioned as part of the Florida project) and data tapes full of proprietary software he helped design. He also retains ownership of the screenplay for the feature film “A Thousand Cranes”, and the second largest payout awarded to anyone involved with the Florida project. “As further proof that we were not at fault in the closing of the company, the attorneys had to agree that $8.5 million of my personal mortgage would be paid down,” said Textor. Wyndcrest Holdings, an investment company owned by Textor, acquired the California visual effects company Digital Domain in 2006. Publicly, they became most notable for resurrecting slain rapper Tupac Shakur at 2012’s Coachella Music Festival. In July of 2009, the Florida arm of Wyndcrest announced plans for a digital production studio in Tradition. The move also included a partnership with Florida State University to build a film school in South Florida that would work closely with the new studio. By 2012, under Textor’s leadership, Digital Domain expanded into Florida as an East Coast digital effects studio
WWW.YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM and school. Textor secured more than $130 million of government money to build the two landmark projects in Florida: The film and visual-effects school called the Digital Domain Institute and the state-of-the-art film studio Digital Domain in Port St. Lucie. An incentive payment went directly into the Florida budget with the approval of Governor Charlie Crist and Digital Domain received $20 million of state money from a fund normally used to lure outof-state businesses to Florida. The City of Port St. Lucie followed suit, with land and a brand-new studio building in exchange for 500 full-time jobs by 2014. In 2011, Textor and the management team worked to take the company public. The problems with the debt began when Florida-based Lydian Bank, one of Digital Domain’s backers, ran into financial troubles and sold its Digital Domain loan and its stock options in the special effects company. An investment group named Comvest Capital bought the loan and agreed to lend Digital Domain another $15 million. In addition, Digital Domain agreed to borrow $8 million to buy stock to hold for Comvest. Some interested investors began to back away from Digital Domain after the loan announcement, but Textor still had interested investors willing to put money into the company. But the stock started to fall. Digital Domain agreed to repay one lender, Tenor Capital, in stock and allowed Tenor Capital to short the stock — a way to profit when the stock price falls as opposed to the traditional profit when a company stock price grows. The belief was that Tenor Capital could short only a small amount, but an agreement allowed the company to short much more. Digital Domain believed several deals could have put cash into the company but were thwarted by Tenor Capital, which had significant weight as a chief lender. Digital Domain did not have enough cash on hand to meet Tenor’s loan terms and Tenor notified Digital Domain on Aug. 20 the company was in default, turning a $35 million dollar loan into a $51 million dollar loan that Digital Domain could not meet. The day the company announced it would close the studios, Textor resigned. Soon after, a lawsuit was filed claiming officials at Digital Domain Media Group misled investors and were participants in a Ponzi Scheme. The accusations, the court decided, were unfounded. In the report, mediator Bruce Greer points out that of all the lawsuits filed against John Textor and Digital Domain, only one proceeded to court. Iroquois

the St. Lucie’s North Fork — along Port St. Lucie, Jensen Beach and the northern side of Stuart. However, the St. Lucie and Martin County Health departments have issued health advisories for portions of the St. Lucie’s North and South forks for enteric bacteria levels, which is unrelated to blue-green algae. Blue-green algae is generally waterborne, although it can survive on land. Enteric bacteria is found in intestinal tracts. It gets into waterways through fecal pollution that often migrates in storm water. Enteric bacteria can usually only be toxic enough to cause nausea and diarrhea along with skin and eye irritation and possibly rashes. However, that can be an extreme health hazard to the very old, very young and seriously ill people. Blue-green algae blooms can generate more generally hazardous neurotoxins and hepatotoxins, poisons affecting the nervous system and liver. Blue-green algae blooms often cause large-scale aquatic die-offs. Folks may be calling the institute to find out if it’s safe to go onto the water, but others seem to take the algae as a part of life on the Treasure Coast. Tolly Allen, head coast of Palm City’s Intrepid Rowing Club, said the about 45 members are all showing up for practices.
“Parents are not 100-percent thrilled, but our choice is not to row,” he said. K.C. Traylor, communications director at Palm City’s Meridian Marina, said the suspected bluegreen algae isn’t keeping boaters away from the water either. “Generally, the river issues have been a concern for so many years now, at this point it’s not negatively affected our business,” she said. “People are used to having issues with the river.” Nevertheless, Traylor said while the boating community may not be frightened off from getting on the water, it’s been active in advocating against continued discharges of the Lake Okeechobee waters into the St. Lucie and eventually Indian rivers. Perry said the recent heavy rainfall, which promises to exacerbate lake discharges, is also making the St. Lucie more susceptible to blue-green algae. The river naturally has a low level salinity. Rainfall and Lake Okeechobee discharges reduce that salinity “It’s a fresh water blue-green algae,” Perry said. The Army Corps of Engineers recently announced an increase in the discharges to prepare for an expected wet summer.

TREASURE COAST — DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Southeast Florida, a family-owned, full service remodeling company in Stuart, has received a 2016 Guildmaster Award for showing a continued commitment to service excellence. GuildQuality, a third-party customer satisfaction surveying company based in Atlanta, has powered the Guildmaster Award since 2005 to celebrate service excellence among home builders, remodelers, and contractors. DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Southeast Florida was one of over 200 companies nationwide recognized by GuildQuality for delivering exceptional customer experiences. In determining the companies who were recognized with this honor, GuildQuality considers two primary metrics: the percentage of customers who would recommend your business and the percentage of customers who responded. DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of SE Florida achieved a recommendation rate of greater than 90 percent from their customers, who were surveyed through GuildQuality. Vice President Dave Morelli commented, “There are many every-
day practices that our team considers standard that helps create our overall high customer satisfaction rating. We at DreamMaker have a printed “Code of Values” (with topics of respect, integrity and customer focus) that are very important to our process, and the meaning of the word “team” is also very important to us. From the office staff, design consultants, project managers, production crews and trade partners, all of us understand that we are not only providing a product but a “service” that will be remembered long after the cost is forgotten”. DreamMaker also has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and has been serving the Treasure Coast since 1987, so when you’re ready to talk about your remodeling project, DreamMaker will be there to provide a high quality experience for you. To learn more about DreamMaker, visit their website at www. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Hot summer days across the country have contributed to more than 9 child deaths so far this year from heatstroke when children were alone in vehicles. Safe Kids St. Lucie and the Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County remind caregivers to never leave children alone in cars, and if you see a child alone in a car, call 911. Heatstroke, also known as hyperthermia, is the leading cause of non-crash, vehicle-related deaths for children. It occurs when the body isn’t able to cool itself quickly enough and the body temperature rises to dangerous levels. Young children are particularly at risk as their bodies heat up three to five times faster than an adult’s. Since 1998, more than 660 children across the United States have died from heatstroke when unattended in a vehicle. “A car can heat up 19 degrees in 10 minutes. And cracking a window doesn’t help,” said Ronda Cerulli, Safe Kids St. Lucie. “Heatstroke can happen anytime, anywhere. We don’t want to see this happen to any family. That’s why Safe Kids is asking everyone

to help protect kids from this very preventable tragedy by never leaving your child alone in a car, not even for a minute.” Together, we can cut down the number of deaths and near misses by remembering to ACT. • A: Avoid heatstroke-related injury and death by never leaving your child alone in a car, not even for a minute. And make sure to keep your car locked when you’re not in it so kids don’t get in on their own. • C: Create reminders by putting something in the back of your car next to your child such as a briefcase, a purse or a cell phone that is needed at your final destination. This is especially important if you’re not following your normal routine. • T: Take action. If you see a child alone in a car, call 911. Emergency personnel want you to call. They are trained to respond to these situations. One call could save a life. The Never Leave Your Child Alone in a Car program is made possible through a grant from General Motors. For more information on preventing child heatstroke deaths, please visit www.noheatstroke.org and www.safekids.org/ heatstroke.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Sharon White recently retired from the military after 33 years. She began her service career in communications and ended as a first sergeant. She saw her role as a mentor to those she led. “I was a mentor and a trainer and I’d tried to lead them in the right direction to where they wanted to go,” she said. When she retired, White wanted to give back. She works with the elderly, doing home health care and found a brochure for the Guardian ad Litem program. The program trains volunteers to represent the best interest of children who have been abused or mistreated. “I thought that was something I’d love to do, to be a voice for a child,” she said. “I can’t save them all, but if I can save one, it will make a difference in me.” White entered the training program to prepare her to go into the field. There was some time in the classroom and some work online over a two month period. She also had to pass a background check before she could be certified and she had to sit in on a courtroom session to get an idea of what she would need to do when she had to go to court for periodic judicial review of cases. White came on board in June 2015 and was assigned a mentor. She also was given her first case. “They give you a mentor and the mentor and I went to the home,” she said. “The mentor can introduce you or, like me, you just walk around and pull them in.” Her first case had three children in two different locations. “You’re responsible to make sure the kids know I’m there for them, and they’re not alone,” she said. “(“I’m there) if they want to

You may see something that makes you go (more often.)” White initially asked for one case, to give her time to learn the system. “I grew a lot over it,” she said. “You won’t be overwhelmed. The mentor is there as long as you need them and would come on visits if needed. The mentor can be there the whole while. There’s lots of support in the office and the team is very supportive.” White’s first case recently closed. She was thrilled that the case had a good ending. The state was forced to share in the distribution of the assets and not a member of the board or management team is required to pay anything as there was no finding of fault. If there was any wrongdoing, I would not be getting such a sizeable distribution. My distribution was structured to help us rebuild as we have been doing,” said Textor.

JRC Consulting Group golf tournament to benefit SafeSpace FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TREASURE COAST — John Carr of JRC Consulting and JRC Charitable Foundation and Venture Construction Group of Florida have announced a partnership for the 6th Annual JRC Consulting Group Charity Golf Tournament. Again this year, the outing will benefit SafeSpace, a Treasure Coast non-profit that assists victims of domestic violence. This is the third consecutive time the organization has been selected to receive proceeds from the tournament. SafeSpace fills a critical void in the community that ensures that domestic violence victims and their families always have a safe place to go. The tournament takes place on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at Lost Lake Golf Club, 8320 SE Fazio Drive, Hobe Sound, FL 33455. Committee members include Brittany Wood, Janet Farnan, John Carr, Karen Lennon, Michelle Martin-Carr, Pete Lashenka and Rebecca Beckett. “We are very proud to partner
with JRC Charitable Foundation on this golf outing to benefit SafeSpace,” says Steve Shanton, President of Venture Construction Group of Florida. “We give back to the communities we serve in many ways and as a company that puts homes and businesses back together after violent storms, it makes perfect sense for us to assist SafeSpace in providing a safe haven for victims of domestic violence.” Entry to the tournament is $95 per golfer or $375 per foursome and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, event gift bag, lunch, sleeve of balls, awards for winners, range balls and an invitation to the postevent check presentation. Sponsorships are still available and interested individuals or companies should contact John Carr at john@jrcconsultinggroup.com. St. Lucie West schools win big; Manatee Acadamy advances to national level ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Next stop: Los Angeles. That’s where Manatee Academy’s Project Citizen portfolio is advancing. The team of seventh grade students from Megan Shaver’s civics class placed first in the state for their portfolio entitled, “Keep Port St. Lucie Afloat,” and the team placed second in the oral competition. Representatives from Manatee’s team presented their problem, possible solutions, action plan, and portfolio which included the team’s research binder and presentation board to a panel of prestigious judges on May 20 in Palm Beach Gardens. The suite of judges was comprised of Nova faculty, members of the League of Women Voters, and Florida Law Related Education Association staff. While Manatee Academy’s team project is advancing to the national competition, St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) had a weighted and impressive showing at the state competition, which boasted a total of six middle school projects. Of these six projects that advanced to the state level, three were from St. Lucie Public Schools. Student team projects
Photo courtesy of St. Lucie Public Schools from Southern Oaks Middle School and Westgate K-8 rounded out the SLPS presence. Projects were judged in two categories: (1) Oral Hearing in which students presented their problem, possible solutions, and action plan, and (2) Portfolio in which research binders and presentation boards were evaluated. Westgate K-8 placed third in the Oral Hearing category. “I am so impressed with the level of commitment and civic-minded responsibility our students demonstrated. They selected their problem, thoroughly researched it, connected with many leaders in the community to explore solutions, and presented their ideas in a very polished manner,” said Lilly Beauchamp, principal of Manatee Academy. For seventh graders in SLPS Civics classes, Project Citizen is a program that promotes competent and responsible participation in local and state government. According to the Florida Law Related Education Association, “The program helps participants learn how to monitor and influence public policy. In the process, they develop support for democratic values and principles, tolerance, and feelings of political efficacy,” Beauchamp said.

Make-A-Wish makes dreams come true ST. LUCIE WEST — Make-AWish Southern Florida serves children on the Treasure Coast as well as 11 other counties in South Florida. Locally, the non-profit organization is 33 years old. According to their website, “In the first year (1983), the chapter granted a wish every 180 days; today, it grants one every 16 hours.” Children who have been identified with a “life-threatening” medical condition are eligible with a physician’s authorization. The age of eligible Wish children is between 2½ and 18 years old, according to Richard Kelly, Executive Vice-President of Brand Advancement and Chapter Operations. The organization partners with hospitals and treatment facilities. Generally, health care professionals are the primary referral source; however, neighbors, friends, and family refer children as well. Kelly explained, “There is a perception that we only select certain kids to get a wish, and

Every child gets a wish!” He went on to say, “What we do is necessary to the well-being of children.” Locally, approximately 15 wishes are granted per year. Currently, St. Lucie County has 10 Wish kids and Martin County has 5, with 15 local Wish volunteers helping the children. Granting wishes requires funding. Kelly explained, “Many of the external events are held by other organizations for Make-A-Wish.” Local schools participate by utilizing the Make-A-Wish fundraising kit, as well as companies choosing to match funds of employees donating to the organization. “In addition, internal fundraisers including a gala, golf tournaments, and four Walks for Wishes help with funding. graphs. A Port St. Lucie family knows first-hand how special Make-AWish and their volunteers are to children living with a life-threatening medical condition. Triniti Wimbs, 17 years old, was born with sickle cell anemia. Takecia Johnson, Triniti’s mom, would like more awareness of the disorder, sickle cell, and how it affects day to day life. Triniti’s parents have the trait for the blood disorder, which causes extreme pain. When she was 18 months old, the sickle cell crisis began with hospital stays every 3 months. The effects of daily life with sickle cell are challenging; however, with support from her teachers, Triniti achieved the Honor Roll at school. Triniti’s doctor and volunteers told her about Make-A-Wish, and after a hospital stay last July, Triniti referred herself. Johnson said, “I didn’t know Triniti called Make-A-Wish until I received a call at work.” Triniti said, “Carol and Kim, Wish volunteers, are so thoughtful and wonderful!” Triniti’s dream was to go to Hawaii and swim with the dolphins. Johnson recalled, “Everything was over the top! Triniti, her mom, and
sister, Terris were picked up by a limo and taken to a plane. The pilot announced the special news of Triniti’s wish, a trip to Hawaii. Once they arrived, her mom said, ‘We received superstar treatment!’” Triniti’s dream came true when she and her family cruised into the Pacific, where she swam with the dolphins. Johnson is thankful to the Make-A-Wish volunteers who “kept her, Triniti, in mind” when planning the itinerary, including directions to the closest hospital. The family hasn’t had a long distance vacation, due to Triniti’s condition. For 7 days, Triniti was able to keep her mind off the pain and enjoy her dream come true. Mom recalls seeing her daughter with “smiles in Hawaii and no cares in the world.” The Saturday before Easter, the family arrived at their Port St. Lucie home. “We all want to volunteer for Make-A-Wish,” said Johnson. Triniti, like many other Wish kids, wants to help others, living with a life-threatening medical condition, with their wish. “It’s a once in a lifetime chance,” said Triniti. Her advice: “Traveling the world is the best thing you can do!” For more information, call MakeA-Wish at (888) 773-9474 or visit www.sfla.wish.org.

Hydrant flushing coming to your neighborhood PORT ST. LUCIE — On June 5, Utility crews will begin a system-wide flush of the city’s entire water distribution system. Crews will work 7 days a week between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. It is anticipated the flushing project will be complete on or before July 1. Hydrant flushing is an important function undertaken by the Utility Systems Department in order to maintain the highest quality of water possible for the nearly 70,000 Utility customers. What should residents do when hydrants are being flushed in their neighborhood? •Use caution and drive carefully through areas where hydrant flushing is taking place. •Avoid running excessive amounts of tap water including, but not limited to, bath/shower
water, washing machines and dishwashers. •Tap water used during flushing could contain sediment that causes temporary discoloration. •Do not be alarmed, there is no health hazard associated with the discolored water. •If you encounter discolored water, shut it off and wait several minutes before trying again. •If water is still discolored, leave it on and allow fresh water to work its way into your home’s pipes.

Talk to your neighbors, then talk to me.
Why is flushing necessary? •The overall result of hydrant flushing is improved water quality, color and clarity throughout the entire water distribution system, including 1,200 miles of potable water mains and 5,400 fire hydrants. •Flushing is necessary to ensure there is adequate flow and pressure in the city’s water main pipes. It also verifies there is a sufficient flow of water for fight-

TREASURE COAST — Neil Simon’s “Plaza Suite” takes place at one of the Grand Old Ladies of New York hotels, the Plaza. It has three acts, all taking place in Suite 719, with three different couples. Students at Indian River State College will present the show June 16-18 with student director Marisa Quijano at the helm. She spoke about the challenge of directing her peers. “It’s a lot of fun,” she said. “They respect me as a director instead of me being one of their peers. It’s nice to work with friends who are so talented.” Quijano is majoring in organizational management at IRSC and hopes to go into stage management, perhaps with a touring company. “I do like to perform,” she said. “I do a little bit of everything in the theater. I’ve been a part of the theater for eight years, starting in high school.” Quijano began stage managing at IRSC and the head of the performing and visual arts department, David Moberg, liked what he saw. Moberg is the usual director of IRSC plays, but in the summer, he turns some of them over to qualified students. “Mr. Moberg liked how I do it and that I have a passion for it,”
Quijano said. “I have an organized brain.” Quijano noted that because the play is in three acts, with three different casts, there are three different rehearsals. “It’s not as hard as you might think,” she said. “It’s nice to have vignettes so that you can focus on each individual theme.” The cast includes Gabriella Ramos and Shane O’Neill as The Nashes, a couple having some marital troubles; Jerron Thomas and Tori Hallsten as Jesse Kiplinger and Muriel Tate, a movie producer and his old flame; and Allison McDermid and Martin Fitzpatrick as Norma and Roy Hubley, a harried couple on their daughter’s wedding day. “I love my cast,” she said. “Some of them I know very personally and they’re close friends. It’s nice to direct people I respect and have acted alongside.” Quijano hopes to graduate next spring and is planning to look for a job in stage management She knows that she will probably have to work up to it. “I’d like to get my master’s degree in stage management,” she said. “There are not a lot of stage management programs. There’s a pretty good one at Rutgers and one at Yale. That would be a dream come true.” For now, she’s concentrating on the job at hand. “It’s going to be a great piece,” she said. “It’s funny. It has its

You are guaranteed to relate to at least one couple in the show. We’re having a great time and it’s a great learning experience.” Quijano’s colleague, Kelly Fischer, will direct Neil Simon’s “California Suite,” set in the Beverly Hills Hotel, June 23-25.
“We’re using the same set.” Quijano said. “That keeps them connected. They’re great shows.” Indian River State College, 3209 Virginia Ave., Fort Pierce, presents Neil Simon’s “Plaza Suite” June 16-18 at the Wynne Black Box Theatre. Tickets are $15. TREASURE COAST — The story of Florida’s cattle ranches is one that spans 500 years and across multiple generations. For the past 11 years, the Florida Ranches Calendar has honored and captured the legacy of Florida Ranches and the cattle industry through the powerful and captivating photography of eighth-generation Floridian and National Geographic Explorer, Carlton Ward Jr. In addition to Carlton’s photos, we will introduce the work of another native Florida ranch photographer, Gil Williams. Also, due to the wonderful engagement and response from the photo contest we launched last year, we are accepting submissions again this year, now through July 20, with the winning selections to be featured in the 2017 Florida Ranches Calendar. Each year, the calendar is distributed to thousands of people throughout Florida and the nation - from urban dwellers and long-time ranchers, to political, business, community and environmental leaders. Not only is the calendar visually stunning, but it’s also used to educate the pub-
lic about important issues related to the stewardship of Florida’s land and water. To celebrate the 12th year the calendar has been in publication, it is being deemed the “Legacy Edition,” and will include inset pictures of each cover photo since its genesis in 2006. After a successful first-ever 2016 Florida Ranches Calendar photo contest with nearly 170 quality entries received, the photo contest is once again open to all photographers; professionals, amateurs and students. Members of the Florida Cattleman’s Association are especially encouraged to enter. “We urge people of all ages and all industries to enter the contest to further promote the educational value of the calendar, and to encourage the next generation to participate in celebrating our heritage and our future,” said Carlton Ward Jr. “The contest added a renewed excitement and engagement to the calendar. And people who may have never stepped foot on a ranch before have had their eyes opened to a whole new Florida.” Photograph submissions should depict the essence of ranch life, including cattle, horses, people

Smithsonian celebrates World Ocean Day at its St. Lucie County aquarium FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The Smithsonian Institution invites the entire community to join the global celebration of World Ocean Day at the Smithsonian Exhibit at the St. Lucie County Aquarium on Saturday, June 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The ocean is the heart of our planet, connecting people across the Earth, no matter where they live. We play in it, eat food from it, work on it, and breathe because of it. We all depend on a healthy ocean, and World Ocean Day is the perfect time to celebrate this vital resource and the actions we can take to protect it. During the Smithsonian’s World Ocean Day Celebration, participants will enjoy learning stations, crafts, face painting, seining demonstrations in the Indian River Lagoon, and other activities centered around our blue planet. The first 50 children 12 years old and under will receive a free gift bag filled with educational materials. Seining demonstrations will be offered every hour on the hour from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The demonstrations will give families the opportunity to get their feet wet (literally!) in the Indian River Lagoon by collecting animals — including crabs, pipefish, sea slugs and more — in the same manner as Smithsonian researchers and aquarists. Guests wishing to enter the water must wear protective footwear, such as water shoes or old sneakers, to participate in seining demonstrations, and children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult.
A COMEDY
May 27th – June 12th 2016 Features Rob Lastovica, Rachel Davis, Greta Goldstein, Paul Ivice, Dennis McGeady, Dan Beuscher, & Don Brown Directed by Francine Beckstead. Ron, who is Jewish, has been living out of wedlock with a much younger gentile woman for about a year. The reasons he won’t marry her include alimony to his ex-wife and his deeply religious Jewish mother. So, she will convert! The ensuing comedy shows her trying to master the rituals, and becoming more Jewish than Ron himself. After the examination by the Rabbis, in comes Ron’s mother who’s eloping to Las Vegas, and who isn’t very Jewish after all. Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

Admission to the Aquarium, located at 420 Seaway Drive on South Hutchinson Island in Fort Pierce, is $4 for adults and $3 for seniors (55+) and children. All World Ocean Day activities are included with Aquarium admission. World Ocean Day is coordinated globally by The Ocean Project, an international network of about 2,000 aquariums, zoos, museums, and conservation organizations working to coordinate meaningful events worldwide. Held on June 8 of each year, World Ocean Day is an opportunity to celebrate our one world ocean and our personal connection to the sea. This year’s theme is “Healthy ocean, healthy planet,” focusing on the actions we can take to ensure a healthy ocean future. For more information on this global initiative, visit www.worldoceansday.org. For more on the Ocean Project, visit www.theoceanproject.org. The Smithsonian Exhibit is located in the St. Lucie County Aquarium on South Hutchinson Island in Fort Pierce. The Smithsonian Marine Station teamed with St. Lucie County and other community partners to open this unique educational facility in 2001. The Smithsonian Exhibit is an outreach effort of the Smithsonian Marine Station, a branch of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. A fixture in the Fort Pierce community for more than 40 years, the Marine Station is dedicated to understanding the character and diversity of the marine and estuarine habitats of Florida. working, scenic views and/or wildlife. They should convey a theme of heritage, legacy, environmental stewardship or the simple beauty of the land and water on the ranch. The image should help tell the story of the critical role Florida cattle ranches play in preserving Florida’s agricultural and cultural heritage. Quality of light is very important and the photographs must be authentic with Photoshop or editing software only used for minor adjustments. Please submit only horizontal, color photos. There will be only one winner selected per ranch. The submission period began on May 20 and will close on July 20. The submissions will be open to a public vote from July 21 – August 4. During that time, the entries will also be reviewed by a panel of judges. Results are expected to be announced in August. Based on the discretion of the judges, there will be one Public Choice winner and three more determined by the panel. The calendar is produced and published by The Firefly Group, a Palm City based public relations and marketing firm, in collaboration with Carlton Ward Photography, and with generous lead underwriting support from the Florida Cattleman’s Association,
and Ernie Cox through Family Lands Remembered. “It is so important that we share the story of Florida’s ranches with our fellow citizens who may not be aware of the beauty, culture and environmental value of these exceptional places,” explained Stacy Ranieri, president of The Firefly Group. “Opening up the photography to new lenses, generations and talent will bring in fresh new images of ranches that may not have participated in the calendar before. We were so pleased with the results last year and are excited to hold the contest again this year. It has generated a lot of new energy.” For a complete list of parameters and rules for the contest, examples of past photography, and to submit your photographs go to http://review.wizehive.com/ contests/florida-ranches-calendar-photo-contest or Fireflyfoyou. com. If you are interested in sponsoring the calendar please contact The Firefly Group at (772) 2875272 or info@fireflyforyou.com. Sponsorship includes reserved copies of the Calendar for distribution to your own professional network, friends and family and other benefits, including logo placement and the satisfaction of knowing you are helping to spread awareness about Florida’s oldest land stewards.

“My dad had Alzheimer’s disease for years, and Vivian and I took care of him in our home. A friend told me how Treasure Coast Hospice can help. They provided Dad’s medications, a wheelchair, a shower chair and oxygen. The RN and hospice aide showed us their love and patience as they helped us give Dad all the care he needed. We suggest calling Treasure Coast Hospice as early as possible.”
