ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Friends and family will always remember PGA Village resident Ron Shultz as an honest man who put his faith, famRon Schultz ily and employees at his car dealership before himself. Shultz, the owner of Bill Shultz Chevrolet in Fort Pierce, died May 16 in Florida Hospital in Orlando after a lengthy battle with congestive heart failure. He was 67. Shultz’s daughter, Ansley Shultz Alexander, 39, said her father was a loving man who led his personal and professional life with the concept of integrity at the helm. “He was the type of dad that always encouraged us to do what was right,” Alexander said. “He was very compassionate. He was very honest. He was very giving.” Shultz, an Atlanta native, moved to Fort Pierce in 1970 when his father, Bill Shultz, bought the dealership. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nancy Shultz; son Steven Shultz of Jensen Beach; daughters Kimberly Crook of Stuart and Ansley Alexander of Atlanta, as well as five grandchildren. The St. Lucie West resident enjoyed golfing, boating, fishing NASCAR and spending time with his wife and family.

“I got what I paid for.... both times!” “I remember the days when I couldn’t hear the phone ring, my grand kids laughing or carry on a conversation with my husband. I had to finally admit to myself, it was time to get a hearing aid. It was a long battle. I’ve been to countless hearing aid stores over the past 4 decades from Buffalo to Miami. They would stick something in my ear that looked ugly and worked even worse. It was like having a plug in my ear but I guess that is what you get for a few hundred dollars. Then I met Joe Mutter and the war was over. Joe is a Hearing Aid SPECIALIST, sent to me by God. I love the look, it’s light weight, thin and feels just like a normal ear. I think about all of the money I wasted on these other hearing aids and it just breaks my heart. I am so lucky I found Joe and finally got what I paid for”

PGA VILLAGE — As the new general manager of The PGA of America’s flagship facility in PGA Village, Jimmy Terry will use his more than 25 years of experience in the industry to perpetuate the world-class facility’s reputation as a top destination for golfers and enthusiasts across the globe. Staring June 1, Terry, 52, will manage all programs, sales, marketing and community relations at The PGA’s only owned-and-operated golf resort destination. The resort encompasses 54 holes of championship golf designed by Tom Fazio and Pete Dye at PGA Golf Club; the 35-acre PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance golf practice, instruction, fitness and technology park; the onsite PGA Museum of Golf, home to golf’s four major Championship trophies and the nearby private PGA Country Club. “To have the opportunity to come to my association’s flagship property to sort of steer the ship is a remarkable accomplishment for me and a true blessing for me and my family,” said Terry, who’s been a member of The PGA for 26 years. Terry’s extensive management experience includes recently serving as PGA senior general manager for PGA Tour Golf course properties in San Antonio and San Francisco. Terry, a former officer and board of director for the Southern Texas PGA Section was awarded the Section’s 2004 Bill
Strausbaugh, 1997 Horton Smith and 1995 Junior Golf Leader awards. He is a two-time Section Merchandiser of the Year in 1990 and Jimmy Terry 1993, who earned the 2012 TPC Network Platinum and the 2010 TPC Special Recognition Awards. Under his leadership, TPC San Antonio was recognized among “America’s Top 100 Golf Shops” in 2010, 2011 and 2012 by Golf World. Top PGA executives said Terry was the perfect fit to carry The PGA of America to new horizons. “In order to launch an exciting and new era at PGA Village, we searched across the country for the most qualified person to lead our facility and elevate its stature in being recognized as one of the top golf destinations in America,” PGA President Ted Bishop said in a press release. “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Jimmy Terry, who brings an award-winning track record of customer service, sales, marketing and revenue development in support of highly successful programs for resort, private and public facilities.” Terry also served as PGA general manager and director of golf at The Club at Waterford in Marble Falls, Texas, from 2005 to 2008, Falconhead Golf Club in Austin,

Economy on mend, Florida’s future bright, lawmakers say Staff writer
nrodriguez@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Looking back on this past legislative session, Florida lawmakers said the state has made great strides in improving its economy since the 2008 recession. During a recent legislative wrap up, hosted by the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce, Florida Sen. Joe Negron, R-Stuart, delivered the refreshing news that last year, Florida celebrated its most successful year of tourism in the history of the state. And more economic success and higher employment is on the horizon, he added. “Coca-Cola just announced they’re investing $2 billion to plant 20,000 acres of orange groves near Auburndale, Fla., the central part of the state,” Negron said. “That’s going to have an enormous effect, not only for people in the agriculture industry, which is important – and that’s an important part of Florida, those of us that know St. Lucie County know that – but that shows their belief that Minute
Maid and other products that they sell, that there’s going be a demand for those products.” “That’s great job security for people that are selling, promoting and delivering those products.” Based on recent positive trends, Negron is hopeful that Florida’s economy is going to make a full recovery from the economic downturn five years ago. “Our foreclosure situation is getting more under control,” Negron said. “The inventory of homes that are available is going down, therefore prices are going up.” “Unemployment in Florida is going down. We actually have the second-best economic recovery in terms of jobs to any state except for Texas, so we’re competing right there at the top in getting our economy back,” he said. Florida Rep. Larry Lee Jr., D-Port St. Lucie, said research on the Treasure Coast is key in boosting the state’s economy. Lee said the House was able to keep $3 million in the budget for research at Torrey Pines, specifically. Lee said next legislative session he plans to fight for state funding for the Treasure Coast Research Park and Harbor

Branch Oceanographic Institute, both in Fort Pierce. “We have life sciences at Torrey Pines (where) we have groundbreaking research on cancer, AIDS treatment and other types of diseases ...,” Lee said. “You have (agriculture) out at IFAS and the USDA and at Harbor Branch, you have the marine (research) and ocean (research) going on.” Florida Rep. Gayle Harrell, R-Stuart, agreed the Treasure Coast’s transition into the Research Coast with Torrey Pines, VGTI and Tradition Medical Center has been a great surge in the economy. “We’re seeing some growth in our community, so I think we’re on the right track, we’re moving now,” Harrell said. “And with Gov. Scott’s emphasis on developing jobs and bringing jobs to Florida, we’re starting to see the changes ... My glass is always half full. I think this is the beginning of major change.” “When I see what is happening in St. Lucie County, I am so excited about where we are going and what is happening.” Lawmakers also addressed the hotly debated Affordable Care
Sen. Joe Negron Act, which takes effect next year. Negron said a better alternative to the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obama Care is to use state and federal funds to provide assistance for private health care premiums. “I think we should reject Medicaid expansion. I don’t think we need to put more people into a Medicaid system, but I do think there’s a roll for having premium assistance to help people who are

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Each year, the Rupert J. Smith Law Library of St. Lucie County recognizes two St. Lucie County citizens for their incredible commitment to the community. This year, Art Ciasca, the director of development at SafeSpace, was among the esteemed recipients of the “Honored Local Heroes” award. Ciasca joined Scott Van Duzer of the Van Duzer Foundation to be recognized during the annual Law Day Celebration ceremony on May 1 at the Fort Pierce Courthouse. Fort Pierce Police Chief Sean Bald-
win and St. Lucie County Commissioner Paula Lewis were on hand to present the community leaders with their awards. For the past four years, Ciasca has worked to increase awareness about the prevalence of domestic violence throughout the Treasure Coast with SafeSpace, a local nonprofit organization and the only domestic violence outreach center on the Treasure Coast. In addition to providing emergency shelter with its two 24-bed facilities, SafeSpace provides outreach services and counseling, as well as legal and children’s advocacy, to domestic violence victims and their dependents. In the last fiscal year, SafeSpace served nearly
1,000 victims and their children and provided more than 13,000 safe nights of service to women and their children. But Ciasca’s dedication to his community extends further than his work at SafeSpace. For more than 25 years, Ciasca has been involved with human services organizations throughout the Treasure Coast. Prior to joining SafeSpace, Ciasca worked at New Horizons of the Treasure Coast, the Wound Healing Center and Savannas Hospital. “I am more than honored to receive this award,” Ciasca said. “Working at SafeSpace means

Letter to the editor The article about the hogs running rampant in Tradition is grossly exaggerated. They have come out at night and torn up some sod in a few yards and along the berm. There is also a lie posted from a resident that the developer is not doing anything about it. They have trapped over a dozen hogs, and have hired a second trapper. There are a few people in the development that are making this “big news,” when this is Florida and hogs exist. I am a home owner in this development and am very upset with the fallacies in this article. Pat Wehrheim Affe Tradition

Education key to preventing, recognizing child abuse Shelley Koppel Staff writer
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE WEST — The statistics are staggering. At the beginning of 2012, there were some 1,400 children in St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River and Okeechobee counties under court supervision because of maltreatment and neglect. Statewide, the figure was 32,000. Local children have a voice in court with the Guardian ad Litem program. These dedicated volunteers ensure that the best interests of the children are served during court proceedings. The Guardians for New Futures has supported the work of the Guardian ad Litem program since 1991. In 2011, the nonprofit has expanded its mission to educate people about child abuse and neglect and help people recognize it in the children they see. Debbie Butler is president of the Guardians for New Futures board of directors. She began her work with the organization in 2007, when she moved to Florida. “I wanted to give back and I became certified as a Guardian ad Litem volunteer,” she said. “I had no idea how many children were abused and neglected. This was a way to help the greater good.” Identifying abuse and neglect is not as obvious as seeing bruises or torn clothing.
“You hear so many stories where a neighbor or teacher or day care provider could have helped if they knew how to recognize it or how to report it,” she said. “Our audience is the community as a whole and people working with children: the teacher, day care provider, bus driver, school nurse. “We started doing workshops last year. If a child is acting out, you need to take a second look. That’s why I’m so passionate. How many children would be protected if all of us paid attention? Rather than being like ostriches, with our heads in the sand, we could be like meerkats, with someone on the lookout.” Butler said that identifying behaviors of abused and neglected children is not always easy. Children who are acting out may be doing so as a result of hidden abuse. To that end, her organization has sponsored training workshops on eating disorders, substance abuse, teen suicide prevention, the behaviors of sexually abused children, cyber-awareness and cyber-bullying, teen dating violence and date rape and other issues. Many of the workshops are run with the assistance of the sheriff’s offices for the various counties. Butler said their assistance is invaluable. “We’re very fortunate that almost all of our workshops offer free Continuing Education Units,” Butler said. “The workshops are done by professionals and teachers get in-service

Lima hopes to finish filming by the end of July and then try to get it accepted into film festivals. After that? He’d love to have a movie studio pick it up for distribution. Lima said that he has been asked several times about the terrible story of the women held captive for years in Cleveland. “I feel horrible for what they went through,” he said. “(I hope the film) might stop stuff like that from happening. You don’t see them tied up and beaten. If anyone watches this movie, if one person gets the message not to treat a woman like that, I’ll be happy.” People interested in helping to sponsor “Rescue Me” can contact Gerard Lima at glima84@aol. com. Donations may also be made by going to www.gofundme.com/ rescueme. Director Jonathan Schwark has announced that 10 percent of the proceeds from the film will go to the victims of violent crime. cause they believe in the project. For his director, Lima chose Jonathan Schwark. They met in one of those twists that seem to happen only in films. Schwark had moved to Port St. Lucie from Wisconsin to work for Digital Domain. “The sole purpose for his moving from Wisconsin was Digital Domain,” Lima said. “The day he was supposed to go in was the day they went under. He was never allowed in the building.” Lima and Schwark decided to make a film together, with Lima as producer and writer and Schwark as director. “I’m so grateful to have Jonathan as the director,” Lima said. “He’s so knowledgeable. I call him the ‘film genius.’ He has done a lot of background work in films and has experience editing and doing cinematography and videography. “Without him, this would never be happening. I feel bad he never got to work with Digital Domain, but he’d be a hell of an employee at a major film company. He can envision the whole shot before he takes his camera out of the bag.” All of the cast and crew have day jobs and shooting is done on the weekends. There are 10 main and supporting characters. Some answered a casting call on Craigslist and others were referred to Lima. The cast and crew include Victoria Yurillo as the kidnapped daughter, William Burns as the father and John Aguiar as one of the villains. The assistant director is Le Ann Cheri; other behind-the –scenes staff includes Joseph Faraci, Josh McDarris, Juanjo Farias and Jim Yurillo. Now Lima is looking for sponsors, both individuals and groups, to help with the project. The contribution doesn’t have to be financial. When they filmed at a movie theater, they were given popcorn and drinks to feed the crew. He wants to thank those who have supported them so far, including The city of Port St. Lucie, Mayor JoAnn

People do need health care, no doubt,” said Mayfield, whose district covers a small portion of St. Lucie County. “As Rep. Put a figure on it. How much can we spend? How much are we willing to put into it? And open up to the private sector ... then it’s going back into the free market and we know what our liability is,” Mayfield said. “To me, that’s more of the system we should be coming out with because, if we take federal dollars, the federal government can stop it at any point in time they want to.” “I mean there are lots of programs we started that the federal government said you will do it, we’re going to fund you for it, then the federal government pulls their money back.” “Someone my mom worked with introduced me to the game and I grew up on a little nine-hole golf course in a small Texas town,” Terry said. “Little did I know in that introduction, that would become my life and my career path.” Terry said he and his wife, Rose, have already found the perfect home in the PGA Village. “We think we’re going to love it ...,” Terry said. “We’re both very excited about being there and being a part of the community.”

SCHULTZ from page 1 Even through deteriorating health, Shultz never missed a moment with his family, Alexander said. “Even throughout his illness he never missed any of the grandchildren’s events or Grandparent’s Day or anything like that,” she said. Alexander said she and her siblings can only hope to fill their father’s shoes and continue his legacy of loyalty and love. “We just hope we can be half the person or the parent or the boss that he is being remembered for,” said Alexander, who stressed Shultz’s faith was a stronghold in his life. Alexander said her father treated others as his own blood, his employees especially. “That was his second family. Those guys down there saw him more than we did as we grew up, moved on and started our own families,” Alexander said. “He valued them as if they were his own family.” Tim DiTullio, a car sales manager at Bill Shultz Chevrolet, worked with Shultz for 28 years. DiTullio said the loss has left a hole in his heart. “He was the glue that held the company together. Basically,
we’re finding our way right now without him. It’s tough. We’re trying to put together the pieces,” said DiTullio, who added Shultz’s two brothers Bill and Jeff have been outstanding leaders in recent days. DiTullio said he’ll miss hearing encouraging words from Shultz. “Every time we had a meeting he would always tell you, ‘You know, I’m very proud of you. You guys are very capable of everything we ask you to do.’ ‘I love all you guys.’ That’s just how he was,” DiTullio said. DiTullio said he will honor his late boss by selling cars the Shultz way. “He was a man of great integrity,” DiTullio said. “Very, very honest in his business dealings.” Shultz, a prolific philanthropist, was involved in helping dozens of local charities and organizations including the Chevy youth soccer and baseball programs, the Mako Soccer Club in Port St. Lucie, local police athletic and 4-H clubs, Toys for Tots and the Cell Phones for Soldiers program, DiTullio said. The family has asked that donations go to the “Ron Shultz Memorial Fund” at John Carroll Catholic High School, where Shultz was a frequent sponsor.

St. Lucie West to get electric car charging station Staff writer
nrodriguez@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE WEST — As the globe inches toward becoming greener with cleaner energy, Port St. Lucie is right on the trend’s heels. As part of the city’s efforts to create a cleaner environment and foster new business relationships, Mayor JoAnn Faiella announced a new partnership with Tesla Motors Inc. to install the Treasure Coast’s first Tesla supercharging station for electric vehicles in St. Lucie West. “The city’s central location and highway access make it a natural stopping point for Florida’s most heavily populated areas,” Faiella said during a press conference last week. “As the electric vehicle market grows, people will learn about our city as they search for places to charge their vehicles.” “If our community does the right thing, news will spread throughout social media that Port St. Lucie is a great place to make a stop-over and businesses and tourists will continue to discover new opportunities here.”
The charging station will have connections for eight cars in existing parking spaces in the Town Center Plaza where Starbucks, Five Guys and Moe’s Southwestern Grill are located just off I-95 and St. Lucie West Boulevard. The company filed a permit application and construction plans with the city on May 31, which are being reviewed by the building department, Faiella said. City officials aren’t sure how long the process will take. Faiella, who recruited the company, said Tesla’s presence will act as an economic booster. “People who stop here to recharge will have time to spend at our local businesses and we want them to feel welcomed,” she said. The charging station will also improve the local air and perpetuate the city’s goal to create a cleaner environment, city officials said in a press release. “In recent years, the city has increased its commitment to reduce environmental impacts and conserve natural resources,” the release said. “Initiatives include the installation of a solar power system

eight hours at dealerships to three to four, Faiella said. The California-based company has galleries in Dania Beach, Dadeland and Miami Beach with service stations in Dania Beach and Tampa. The largest Tesla battery supplies 300 miles of range at 55 mph. According to the automaker’s website, Tesla drivers spend an average of $934 on fuel costs, compared to $5,182, the average cost of fuel for a premium sedan. PNC awards $10,000 grant to Early Learning Coalition FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
MARTIN COUNTY — For children to enter kindergarten ready for school, they need to be learning from infancy, have positive preschool experiences, and, most importantly, have active involvement with their parents. Through a $10,000 grant from the PNC Foundation, the Early Learning Coalition of Indian River, Martin and Okeechobee counties is teaching 40 Treasure Coast parents to help their 4-year-old children to “learn through play” by using the Ready! for Kindergarten ™ program. “PNC recognizes the role kindergarten readiness plays in the long-term success of local children, their families and ultimately, our economy,” said Craig Grant, PNC regional president for Florida east, speaking on behalf of the PNC Foundation. “By preparing our youngest citizens for educational achievement, we help build a solid foundation for the future of this region.” PNC is deeply committed to supporting educational programs for underserved children through

partnerships nationwide. Through Grow Up Great, its $350 million, multi-year, bilingual initiative that began in 2004 to help prepare children from birth to age 5 for success in school and life, it has supported innovative programs emphasizing math, science, the arts and financial education for more than 1.7 million at-risk preschool children. This year, the program will focus on parents at child care providers where readiness scores were in need of improvement and consist of three training sessions in each county. Parents learn how to best interact with their children to give them the language literacy, math reasoning and social/emotional skills they will need to succeed in school. “While there are many early learning training programs to support teachers in the classroom, this program focuses on a child’s first and most influential teacher — their parents,” said Early Learning Coalition director of programs Pat Houston.

One of the upcoming projects is the Second Annual Save our Children Conference, to be held on Sept. 26-27 at the Indian River State College Training Complex on the Fort Pierce campus. Agents from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Drug Enforcement Agency and other organizations will speak about sexual abuse and drugs and how each has an impact on children. All of the work done by the Guardians ad Litem and Guardians for New Futures is done by volunteers. Professionals who run workshops donate their time, whether it’s the Sheriff’s Offices or organizations such as Tykes and Teens and the Children’s Services Councils. Money raised by donation goes for the workshops, but also provides Guardians ad Litem with modern computers and software, gives children in the program holiday gifts and provides for small libraries in the courthouses, to occupy the kids while their cases are heard. “When the kids are in court, we have books and art supplies,”

Debbie Butler Butler said. Butler hopes that the message gets out that if something doesn’t seem right, don’t ignore it. Even something like hoarding food may mean there isn’t enough food in the home or the child is taking it home to siblings. “I’m fortunate to live in such a caring and giving community,” she said. “If you’re fortunate enough to live in a loving environment, you can’t imagine some of the things that happen to kids,” she said. “If I can help one child, that’s a pretty huge legacy.” For more information about the Guardian ad Litem program or the Guardians for New Futures, visit the website, www.gfnf4kids.org or call (772) 807-3868.

ST. LUCIE WEST — After taking hacks in the batting cage prior to a May 30 home game against Jupiter, Dustin Lawley walked into a conference room at Tradition Field for an interview the same way he walks into the batter’s box. During the interview, Lawley is calm, cool and collected with every word uttered, almost giving off an air of nonchalance. But his relaxed state screams confidence, not an arrogance or cockiness. Following a slow start in April, where he went hitless in his first 17 at-bats on season, Lawley has shown reason to be confident in the month of May. At the time of press, Lawley has hit .276 through 26 games in May, .74 points higher than his April average. For the St. Lucie Mets left-fielder, it was a matter of staying the course. “I know I can hit, but the first part of the year, it just wasn’t

By working with both Democrats & Republicans, we were able to attain funding for good projects in St. Lucie County.
Dear Friends, My legislative staff and I would like to thank you for the honor of representing you in Tallahassee. While my first legislative session was definitely a learning experience, it was also a blessing and a gift to be able to work to make our community better. I hope this Legislative Update will give you confidence that I am working daily to serve you. I am proud to work with my colleagues in the Legislature to make sure that every child, family and senior citizen in St. Lucie County has the chance at a better life. Again, thank you for the honor of representing you.

His numbers across the board are better in May compared to the opening month of the season, hitting more home runs (65), RBIs (23-17), doubles (9-5) triples (4-0), and a higher onbase (.330-.260) and slugging percentage (.610-.419). While Lawley is climbing out of an early hole to raise his average, the power has always been there. He is second in the Florida State League with 11 home runs through 50 games. The power is coming a year after hitting 14 home runs in 129 games with Class A-affiliate Savannah. Lawley believes the biggest reason for his power surge hasn’t been due to changes made on the field, rather a change of fields and the home ballpark where he plays half of his games. “Last year, I played in Savannah and that field there is the graveyard,” Lawley said with a small grin. “It’s really big. I hit a lot of balls in Savannah that in any other ballpark, they would’ve gone out. “I haven’t changed anything in my swing. Seeing a lot more pitching and having better pitch recognition has probably helped, but I just go out there and play. I just try to have fun and not to over-think the game.”

Despite his love for the game and the fun he has playing it, Lawley says he never really watched baseball growing up. The St. Lucie Mets outfielder admired the likes of Los Angeles Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton and former Kansas City Royals outfielder Bo Jackson, but he wasn’t a diehard fan of any team on the diamond. The football field is a different story. “I’m from Alabama and I’m a big college football fan,” Lawley said laughing. “I like watching college football way more than baseball. I’ve always been like that. I have no idea why.” The St. Lucie Mets outfielder is passionate about the Auburn Tigers football team. “Every Saturday, I’d always go over to the Auburn (University) and get chills whenever the players would run out of the tunnel onto the field,” Lawley said. After playing collegiately at the University of West Florida and Wallace State Community College in Alabama, Lawley was selected by the Mets organization in the 19th round (582nd overall) of the 2011 MLB Draft. While at Wallace State, Lawley was teammates with current major leaguers Craig Kimball, closer for the Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers starting pitcher Derek Holland and Houston Astros infielder Jake Elmore.

GRANT from page 14 The sessions were held from January through May and received positive reviews from parents. “The parents were fully engaged,” Houston said. “One of the dads raved about the methods he learned of using simple puzzles and games to teach children different skills, such as prepositional phrases and colors.” Parents are asked to spend 10 minutes with their child on these activities each day and to read to their child 20 minutes each day. These simple new teaching skills are able to enhance their children’s learning when they are not at school and especially in the sum-
mer months when many children are not involved in any academic or educational programs. Each family in the Ready! for Kindergarten ™ program receives a kit of high-quality, reusable materials to continue the learning activities at home. “We are very grateful for the PNC Foundation’s grant, as we will have more children with mastery of essential skills before entering kindergarten,” added Houston. For more information about the Early Learning Coalition, visit www. elcirmo.org. The PNC Foundation, which receives its principal funding from The PNC Financial Services Group, actively supports organizations
that provide services for the benefit of communities in which it has a significant presence. The foundation focuses its philanthropic mission on early childhood education and community and economic development, which includes the arts and culture. Through Grow Up Great, its signature cause that began in 2004, PNC has created a $350 million, multi-year initiative to help prepare children from birth to age 5 for success in school and life. For more information, please visit www.pncgrowupgreat.com, www. facebook.com/pncgrowupgreat and www.youtube.com/PNC or follow @PNCGrowUpGreat on Twitter. The Early Learning Coali-
tion of Indian River, Martin and Okeechobee counties is responsible for the planning and implementation of school readiness and voluntary pre-kindergarten services in the three county area. The Coalition is responsible for making decisions to meet the early education and child care needs of the children in our communities. In addition to providing financial assistance for families, ELC offers support, training and resources to community providers who serve approximately 5,000 children daily through the School Readiness, Voluntary Pre Kindergarten and Resource & Referral programs. ‘Shrek’ is student summer musical Shelley Koppel Staff writer
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The St. Lucie County School Board’s summer production is in its 17th season, showcasing students from throughout the county. With so much experience, it should be getting easier for director Patrick Madden, drama teacher at Port St. Lucie High School. This year, though, the production is “Shrek: The Musical,” running from June 19-23. The director said the show has several challenges.
Chris Harris, made up as Shrek, stands next to makeup artist Robin Volsky. Harris is a member of the St. Lucie County School Board’s Summer Show, ‘Shrek: The Musical,’ featuring students from throughout the county. It runs from June 19-23 at Port St. Lucie High School.
“It was only on Broadway a couple of years ago and just finished its national tour,” he said. “The rights just became available on June 1. We’re one of the first in the U.S. to be doing it.” That presents some logistical problems. “We normally rent costumes from Costume World in Deerfield Beach,” Madden said. “It’s the biggest in the U.S., but no one’s done (the show) yet. They’re designing the costumes for our production and we’re the first people to use them. They’re handmade for

our people. It’s a daunting task and it’s what makes our show above and beyond.” Makeup for “Shrek” is another challenge, because so many people are familiar with the characters. “It’s very important the people look like the characters,” he said. “Robin Volsky, a professional designer from Vero Beach, has designed all the makeup for Shrek, Fiona and the fairy tale characters. It’s a challenge making characters exactly as what they remember from the movie.” And then there’s the dragon. “We found a company in China that could custom-make a Chinese dragon. On Broadway, they had a million-dollar dragon, but they were not real happy with it. I wasn’t sure what we could use. We only have so much money.” All of the summer productions are open to students 8-18 who live in the county. They are self-supporting because the shows sell out and the ticket sales pay for the production. What’s left is put toward the next show. That enables them to rent costumes and have a makeup artist. The successful summer pro-
gram is a labor of love for Madden. “The idea for the summer program was to get kids involved from different schools at different ages,” he said. “It was a void. We need a show where the kids can get together.” The director said that the show is not just for children. “It’s funny,” he said. “Adults and kids are really going to like it. I don’t want people to think it’s just for kids. It’s a great summer show for the entire family. It’s totally appropriate for everyone. It’s perfect for what we need in summer. The St. Lucie County School Board’s production of “Shrek: The Musical” takes place at Port St. Lucie High school, 1201 S.E. Jaguar Lane, from June 19-23. Performances are June 19-21 at 7:30 p.m., June 22 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. and June 23 at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available at the Port St. Lucie High School, Jay’s Jewelry in St. Lucie West, Honey-Baked Ham in Stuart, Joy’s Ice Cream Plus in Fort Pierce, Perkins in Port St. Lucie and Tin Fish on Port St. Lucie Blvd. For more information, call (772) 337-6768.
