FORT PIERCE — The competition at the 31st annual Fort Pierce Exchange Club Chili Cookoff last week was heated and in the end, the children of The Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County were the biggest winners. The event, held at the Havert L. Fenn Center in Fort Pierce, attracted thousands from across the Treasure Coast and garnered $40,000 after administrative costs to benefit the children’s organization, which serves more than 3,600 kids and teens in the county. The club’s newly named CEO Mike Sancho, was blown away by the community’s support. “It’s incredible, because this

CHILI from page 1 is what we need. We need the community to support what we do,” Sancho said. “Having the kids supported by everyone in the community is a beautiful thing.” Last year, the event garnered approximately $50,000. Minus the cost to hold the event, a check for $32,000 was cut to the club, which provides a safe haven for children in the community. Since it started 31 years ago, the event has raised close to $3 million for local charitable organizations. Fort Pierce Exchange Club member and St. Lucie County Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky said the club is a vital component is creating a better tomorrow for children in the community. “The Boys & Girls Club is an important element in our community to help keep children safe and to keep them out of trouble, but more importantly, it gives them all the assets to be able to learn.” Attendee Lola Lui of Fort Pierce tried a dozen samples of chili. She was glad her dollars were going to help a worthy cause. “There are too many kids that don’t have anywhere to go, that don’t have activities to do. For the community to provide a safe place for them to grow is really important,” Lui said.
More than 30 teams competed for the best blend of chili. Some also went head to head to see who would raise the most funds at the close of the day. Perhaps the most fiery competition was among the area’s law enforcement agencies, which all had booths side by side. Port St. Lucie Police Officer Steve Brown whipped up a flavorful concoction of smoked beef brisket and five different blends of peppers. “Some people said it was a little spicy. If they think it’s spicy, I think the Girl Scouts are here selling chili, so I just send them over there,” Brown laughed. Brown, whose booth was flanked by the Fort Pierce Police Department and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, said the other two agencies weren’t even on his force’s radar. “You see them? I don’t see them,” Brown said. At the end of the day, Brown said the banter between the three was all in good fun and for a great cause. “As police officers, we have it in our hearts to look out for children, to look out for older people,” Brown said. “The Boys & Girls Club is such a great organizations that helps on all levels.

TRADITION — The Rev. Maryanne Kehlenbach of the new Living Faith Church in Tradition spent most of her working life as a banker, first in her native New York and then on the west coast of Florida. During the 1980s and 1990s, Kehlenbach was responsible for putting into place the systems that allowed banks to set up ATMs and then online banking. “It was building the processes,” she said. “I had to figure out how things worked.” Kehlenbach, who has an M.B.A. from Adelphi University, worked for some of the largest New York banks. She also did consulting work. In 1998, she and her husband Carl, also a banker, wanted to come to Florida, and when a job for Carl opened at Chase Bank near Tampa, the couple moved to Florida. “I continued consulting in New

CHILI from page 3 I’m very impressed with the work that they do.” Lt. Troy Church of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office cooked up a spicy bowl of sausage, beef and steak chili. “The chefs are talking a lot with each other. I think they’re trying to psych each other out,” Church said of his law enforcement competitors. The agency also raffled off more than $700 worth of recreational pool equipment including water slides to help raise money for The Boys & Girls Club. “They’re one of the main ingredients for having a safe community,” Church said. “It gives children something positive to do.” But the top fundraising prize once again went to the Fort Pierce Police Department. Team captain Sgt. Dennis McWilliams said the force began raising funds earlier this year to ensure they remained the champions. “One of our goals was to hold the trophy this year. We know it’s hard because there are a lot of great teams that really do a lot of fundraising. It’s really important to us,” said McWilliams, who came into the day’s festivities with $4,400 already raised. The day’s festivities included game show skits from each team, performances from club members, music and a chili eating contest. Vince Fauntleroy, a St. Lucie West resident, downed the spicy substance in record time for the second year in a row. He said his strategy was simple. “Just put your chin down and scoop it until it’s gone … It’s pretty simple, I’m greedy though,” Fauntleroy joked.
Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Vince Fauntleroy of St. Lucie West retained his speed-eating chili champion label during a contest at the 31st Annual Chili Cook Off hosted by the Fort Pierce Exchange Club Saturday, July 13 at the Havert Fenn Center in Fort Pierce.

Rape culture in military exposed through film Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer
nrodriguez@YourVoiceWeekly.com
ST. LUCIE WEST — A cryptic conflict persists every day within each branch of the U.S. military, but the horrific details of combat are rarely documented or reported, its ugly secrets regularly swept under the rug by higher ups in the chain of command. In his Academy Award-nominated documentary “The Invisible War,” American director Kirby Dick investigates and chronicles the rape epidemic of service members within the U.S. military as told by women and some men who have experienced military sexual trauma. Last week, a St. Lucie Westbased safe haven for sexual abuse survivors screened the 99-minute film with the hope of facilitating change in the country and military’s rape culture. Mindi Fetterman, founder of Inner Truth Project, hoped attendees left the event ready to share the information about sexual violence, an act Fetterman called a “silent epidemic.” “I myself am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and twice as an adult and I know how difficult it has been for me to come to terms with it, to deal with it, to get people to believe me and to get services,” Fetterman, a Palm City resident, said. “In the military, it is even more ridiculously difficult, because it’s so insulated

Most of the time, they don’t believe people when they come forward.” The film cites U.S. government

studies and statistics, estimating 500,000 male and female service members have experienced military sexual trauma. Military sexual trauma, or MST, is a term the Department of Veterans Affairs uses to refer to sexual assault or sexual harassment that occurred while a veteran was serving on active duty. More than 20 percent of female veterans have been sexually assaulted, according to the 2012 film. Thirty-three percent of women don’t report the assault because the commanding officer is a friend of the perpetrator. Twenty-five percent of women don’t report rape because the person responsible for receiving complaints often is the rapist. Some of the women brave enough to share their stories on camera were raped at gunpoint, drugged, contracted sexually transmitted diseases and even became pregnant. Even with eye witnesses, the assailants were never prosecuted because of their ranks or connections to higher officers, the film documented. On April 14, 2012, then Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, watched the film. Two days later, he took the decision to prosecute
away from unit commanders, which hasn’t been enough, according to the filmmaker. On May 7, the Department of Defense released its annual report on sexual assault in the military during a Pentagon press briefing with Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Maj. Gen. Patton. There were a total of 3,374 reports of sexual assault involving active-duty service members as either victims or perpetrators in 2012, a 6 percent increase from the 2011 fiscal year. During the briefing, Hagel called for reform. “We need cultural change where every service member is treated with dignity and respect, where all allegations of inappropriate behavior are treated with seriousness, where victims’ privacy is protected, where bystanders are motivated to intervene and where offenders know that they will be held accountable by strong and effective systems of justice,” Hagel said, according to a Department of Defense transcript of the briefing. GUARDIANS from page 1 children, is collecting donations to provide new school supplies for children and teens within the 19th Judicial Circuit, which serves Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. Approximately 1,400 children are included in that coverage area. The organization’s board of directors president, Debbie Butler, said the Kits4Kids Back to School Drive provides much more than quality school supplies. It also brings a sense of renewed confidence, Butler said. “Once children know that somebody does care about them and somebody is trying to look out for them, that makes a huge difference,” she said. Children placed with relatives are especially needy, Butler said. “Children that are placed with relatives or non-relatives don’t get the same benefits as children in foster care or some kind of paid care,” Butler said. “That’s really what prompted us to take this on as a mission to ensure that all children have new supplies and backpacks when they return to school.” “When a child is abused or neglected and placed with another relative, frequently that puts an even bigger burden on the fami-
lies trying to help the kids.” Since the Kits4Kids drive started in 2009, it has managed to help an average of 400 to 500 students annually. A $25 donation provides a school backpack and kit full of supplies including calculators, protractors, crayons, pencils and more. “When I first saw these (kits), I was amazed, because the backpacks themselves are worth $25,” Butler said. The kits are purchased from a nonprofit organization headed by Staples, Butler said. Shipping is free and since Guardians For New Futures operates with a volunteer staff, 100 percent of the donations go directly to the children, Butler said. The school supplies also provide some normalcy from the traumatic upbringing the children have experienced, Butler said. “These children don’t want to stick out, they don’t want to stand out. They want to be like all their other peers, so to have these things, it does help them to fit in better.” Butler said nothing compares to helping local foster children. The child advocate added the drive wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of the community. “I always say if I could only help one child in my life, that

CHURCH from page 4 “As a kid, I wandered away, and I found my way to the Lutheran Church,” she said. “It was the most freeing experience to understand that Christ died and it was a total gift. There’s nothing you have to do. It gives you your freedom. We’re in a rat-race world and the freedom is life-changing.” Kehlenbach was invited to work with young people in a youth ministry at a church on Long Island. “I started working with kids and loved it,” she said. “I was asked to consider a volunteer position. I loved working with kids and families. When we moved to Florida, I found a home church and started working with youth.” Kehlenbach continued her consulting, commuting to New York. She still found time to work as a volunteer youth leader. “My faith grew greater,” she said. “In children and youth, I see God’s presence.” At a retreat, Kehlenbach told a woman she knew that she was feeling a call to a full-time youth ministry. “She was going to tell me that I needed to do it because I had a gift,” Kehlenbach said. “I was still in banking. Carl and I talked. I said that I was feeling a strong pull to (do the work) full time and he said, ‘We’ll make it work.’” This was 2003 and the Kehlenbachs set a goal of 2006 to downsize and put themselves in a position where they could survive on a much smaller income and a very different lifestyle. In March 2006, Kehlenbach started at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. The program, leading to a master’s degree in children and youth ministry, was both online and at the school, in intensive twoweek sessions. She also continued working full-time. “I loved it,” Kehlenbach said. “I’m a lifelong learner.” Kehlenbach studied for 2½ years and then felt the call to
become an ordained minister. “A friend said. ‘You need to be a pastor.’ I started crying because I felt the call inside, but the outside call counts. I wanted to make sure it was God making this call. Everyone saw it but me.” Kehlenbach switched to the master of divinity program and spent several years completing her program and internship. The ordination process involved many steps, including behavior assessments and interviews. During the process, she became even more excited about her decision. It is unusual for new pastors to be given the charge of developing a new church, known as mission development, but developing process and starting from scratch were what Kehlenbach had done her entire professional life. “They said, ‘We think you’d make a perfect mission developer,’” she said. “There’s a site in Tradition, Florida. We came here in December 2012 and fell in love. We saw the land where the church will be built and it was looking across at Bedford Park. We decided we’d live there. We wanted to be accessible.” The church will be constructed on land at the corner of Southwest Community Boulevard and Southwest Rowley Way. For now, people will meet in private homes. “I’m going to knock on doors and go out into the community to introduce myself,” Kehlenbach said. “I want to meet our ecumenical partners, officials, merchants, the principals of schools, to find out how we can be of assistance and what we can do to be in a partnership with them. “People are looking for a building, but the church is God’s people. Carl and I walk at night and we love seeing the multi-generational nature of the community. I am so excited about the potential. The potential is amazing.” The church will start out small, with groups meeting for Bible study and prayer. Kehlenbach
“A friend said. ‘You need to be a pastor.’ I started crying because I felt the call inside, but the outside call counts. I wanted to make sure it was God making this call. Everyone saw it but me.” The Rev. Maryanne Kehlenbach hopes those who attend will discuss what interests them. “It’s not about me,” she said. “Where do people’s passions lie in service to others? We are called to walk humbly and we are called to be a community.” Ed Williams is council president of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Palm City. His church selected Kehlenbach for the position. “It started three years ago,” he said. “We saw a need for a new church. The community was growing. In conjunction with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Florida-Bahamas Synod, based in Tampa, the congregation gave money and we’re continuing to do so.” Williams believes that “Pastor Maryanne,” as she is known, as the right person for the job. “She blew us away when she came in for the interview,” he said. “Her enthusiasm is conta-
gious. We’re very excited.” For Maryanne Kehlenbach, whose journey from banker to pastor is complete, building a new congregation is the best part of her new position. “One of the things I love about Bedford Park is the porches. You are living in your front yard. This is not our home, it’s a place for people to get together and gather around God’s words. It’s the most freeing thing when you really step back and realize that everything is a gift from God and is meant to be shared, not hoarded.” Living Faith Church will meet in private homes for the time being. For more information, visit the website, www.LivingFaithTradition.com, or call (772) 252-5200 and leave a message. To contact the Rev. Maryanne Kehlenbach, send an email to pastormaryanne@gmail.com.

INVISIBLE from page 6 a six-year Army veteran who processes and presents claims to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, was alarmed by the military’s lack of action against its sexual predators. Carlsen said stiffer punishment must be enacted because of the cruelty of the crime and investigations must be handled properly and with better oversight. “For me, (the film) was really eye-opening, even though I deal with it on a daily basis. I just did not know the severity of what it showed via film because what I see in my office is just a short snapshot of what people have to go through every day,” Carlsen said. “As a PTSD recipient, the sexual trauma portion is more horrific because that’s something you’re going to live with more so because of your spouse, whether it’s male or female, your relationship with your children and the traumatic night terrors.” Lucia D’Ancona, who also attended the screening, is a therapeutic yoga instructor who uses the calming exercise as a means for transformation from a tragedy or trauma. D’Ancona frequently works with veterans who have experienced MST. She calls them her “Hero Yogis.” Her classes have four phases, D’Ancona said. She first aims to provide a safe environment where her yoga participants can feel secure. D’Ancona then teaches participants how to reconnect with their bodies, the second phase. “The third phase is an opportunity to recover that connection with their body,” she said. “The fourth is to actually experience a feeling of empowerment and being able to walk in the world, not feeling that they are so vulnerable.” According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ website, about one in five women and one in 100 men have told their VA healthcare provider that they experienced sexual trauma in the military. Military sexual trauma has far-reaching effects that can last a lifetime, the department’s Palm Beach-based MST coordinator Janis Hoewing said. Some of the difficulties both female and male survivors of MST

Hoewing said treating veterans who have experienced sexual trauma presents unique challenges. “This is considered the ultimate betrayal. The unit themselves are their family. They eat, sleep and work with these people by their sides, the other soldiers. Those soldiers are supposed to have their backs,” Hoewing said. “Sometimes you have to see the perpetrator over and over again.” The involvement of weapons is another component. “People in the past have told me they’ve had guns put to their heads and were threatened that way,” Hoewing said. Treatment includes cognitive and behavioral therapy to develop better coping skills to improve daily functioning, Hoewing said. The VA provides free, confidential counseling and treatment to eligible male and female veterans for mental and physical health conditions related to experiences of MST, according to its website. Treatment centers are located in Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach counties. VA records show 542 patients in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast received treatment for MST in the 2012 fiscal year, public affairs officer Mary Ann Goodman said. For more information, veterans can speak with their existing VA health care provider, contact the MST Coordinator at their nearest VA Medical Center, or contact their local Vet Center. A list of VA and Vet Center facilities can be found at www.va.gov and www.vetcenter.va.gov. Veterans can also learn more about VA’s MST-related services online at www.mentalhealth. va.gov/msthome.asp and see video clips with the recovery stories of veterans who have experienced MST at http://maketheconnection.net/stories-of-connection/ military-sexual-trauma.

Energy conservation and efficiency, resulting in electricity savings just under $1 million dollars over the last three years, is one factor that allowed for the tuition freeze. Administrative positions have not been added and purchases of equipment, supplies and materials are carefully evaluated, officials said. Associate level tuition for Florida residents will remain $103.83 per credit and $117.10 for Baccalaureate level college credit. “With signs indicating that the economy is beginning to recover, this is the time to keep the doors of higher education open for all students,” college president Edwin R. Massey said in a press release. “Affordable higher education is the gateway to good career prospects for our residents and a skilled workforce for our community.” Indian River State College has been rated as the fourth most affordable college in the country and most affordable of Florida colleges according to the U.S. Department of Education’s College Affordability and Transparency Report released on June 27. IRSC moved up the ranks from the fifth place position last year. The ranking is based on average net prices for colleges throughout the U.S. The college has an enrollment of more

Over $40 million in financial aid and scholarships was awarded to IRSC students last year.” Gov. Rick Scott in May vetoed a 3 percent tuition hike to Florida colleges and universities. “There is no doubt that a higher-education diploma can unlock the door to opportunity for families in our state. A great education leads to great jobs,” Scott wrote in the “National Review Online.” “We have passionately fought against attempts to raise the cost of university and college tuition in Florida because increasing the price of tuition decreases the number of families who can afford to provide this critical experience for their children.”

United Way Collecting Tools for Success for the 17th year FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — United Way of St. Lucie County has been “stuffing the Bus” with donated school supplies for 17 years. Donors can fill bags or boxes with new school supplies and take them to the United Way office or a community drop off site. Businesses, organizations, clubs and places of worship are encouraged to collect and deliver supplies. “We can’t gather too many supplies,” said Cris Adams, vice president of Community Impact, United Way of St. Lucie County. “16,000 students in this school district qualify for this kind of help.”
Since the program was started in 1997, School Supplies for Students has provided 50,000 children in need with the basic tools necessary to be successful in school. Educators overwhelmingly agree that students with the appropriate supplies at the start of school are more prepared for class, eager to work, and in general have a better attitude toward school. For older students, it can be a reason to stay in school. Participants in School Supplies for Students are those children eligible for free lunch who are recommended by their school. Supplies will be collected throughout July and distributed to individual students by their

Brown Bag Lunch presents: Managing Trap-Wise Feral Hogs Aug. 9 FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

(FULL SERVICE, INCLUDES WEEKLY VACUUM)
SEE BLUE POOLS, LLC
The University of Florida/St. Lucie County Cooperative Extension in conjunction with the Manatee Observation and Education Center will be hosting a brown bag lunch presentation titled “Managing Trap-Wise Feral Hogs” on Friday, Aug. 9, beginning at noon at the Manatee Center in Fort Pierce. Feral hogs are now found in every county in Florida and in at least 35 states and Canadian provinces. Southeast Florida’s feral hog population is second only to Texas and is estimated to have more than 500,000 wild hogs in a relatively stable population with 1 million to 2 million in the southeastern U.S. Feral hogs can cause damage by rubbing or tusking small trees and by rooting up native vegetation. Unfortunately, feral hogs are
difficult to manage. Females can become reproductive within a year of birth and produce two litters of piglets per year averaging five to seven piglets per litter. This rapid reproduction, along with a lack of predators, adaptability, and intelligence makes these feral hogs difficult to manage. Extension Agent Ken Gioeli will teach participants how to manage feral hogs on their properties. Program: Managing Trap-Wise Feral Hogs Brown Bag Lunch Date: Friday, Aug. 9 beginning at noon Location: Manatee Observation & Education Center, 480 N. Indian River Drive, Fort Pierce Registration: Contact the Manatee Center for information. (772) 466-1600, Ext. 3071. Phones routed through FPUA. People requiring special accommodations must contact the office 48 hours prior to program.

Humane Society of the Treasure Coast offers deep adoption discounts to ease overcrowding FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
TREASURE COAST — The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast’s shelter is filled to capacity and the intake of cats and dogs continues to climb. To ease the overcrowding, the HSTC is offering cat and kitten adoptions from now through July 31 for just $5. Additionally, the shelter will waive the adoption fees for featured dogs (not all dogs). The normal dog adoption fee is $120; cats, $40.
“This is a crazy situation,” said HSTC president and CEO Frank Valente. “It is so hard when we are the only ones taking them all in from Boca Raton to Port St. Lucie.” The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast serves as Martin County’s designated animal care and control facility and as such, must accept every animal that is brought to its shelter. Other animal care organizations have the option of selecting only those animals they wish to take in.
“During spring through fall we take in an average of 300 cats and 200 dogs a month,” said director of operations Candice Veach. “Last month we received more than 400 cats and in the first eight days in July we’ve already accepted more than 100 cats. This is the intake on top of the already filled shelter.” This intake has resulted in animals having to share cage space. Other animals are housed in crates and airline kennels that line the halls and other areas of
the shelter, which only happens during times of overcrowding.

“We tend to see an increase in animals — especially cats and kittens — being brought into HSTC around the summer every year. This is most commonly referred to as “kitten season,” said Veach. Kitten season usually starts in the spring, increases in late spring and early summer, and ends in the fall. Veach said the main reason for animals being surrendered to the shelter is that the owners state they have “too many animals,” with the majority of that number being cats and kittens. The number two reason is that the owners are moving and they can’t or don’t want to take the pet with them. The Society also maintains a foster program for animals with special needs. These pets stay in a foster volunteer’s home for two to six weeks to take advantage of a more focused and less stressful environment. Foster volunteers also are utilized in overcrowding situations but in times like this, more fosters are needed. “The shelter is looking for loving families to adopt the shelter pets to free up space for another animal to enter into the adoption program,” Veach said. “We hope this deep discount will give an additional incentive to those looking to adopt.” Dog and cat adoptions are available at the shelter, 4100 S.W. Leighton Farm Ave. in Palm City. Cats also may be adopted at Thrift

ST. LUCIE WEST — You can party like it’s 1974, or ’84, or more at Good Times West in St. Lucie West. On Saturday nights, the club holds a Retro Dance Party, complete with a disc jockey who honed his craft at the fabled Studio 54 in New York. Connie DeGolier, the club’s owner, said that the music is not the only draw. “There are lasers, light and fog,” she said. “The stage is quite the
set-up. There are two DJs all night long and they are absolutely outstanding.” The club also features special signature drinks they call “disco mixers.” The Mood Ring has vodka and fruit and the Disco Ball is a coconut vodka martini. There is also a Lava Lamp and Brick House. I leave those to your imagination! If reliving the past is not your thing, Sexy Latin Wednesdays are a chance to get in the Latin groove. Three DJs play salsas, meringues as well as modern club
