TREASURE COAST — The law firm of Lauri J. Goldstein & Associates has filed two suits against attorney Thomas Schmitt with allegations of taking between 140 to 170 files when he vacated the Goldstein office and opened up a new office in Martin County. The most recent motion filed on an emergency basis, to be heard at press time, is trying to stop Schmitt from representing Goldstein’s clients due to his mental instability and the way in which he acquired the clients. In an affidavit filed from the Goldstein’s petition a former client of Schmitt, James Holding, stated “(Schmitt) acted like he was ‘spaced out’, ‘His eyes appeared as he was or had been doing illegal drugs.” Michael Pike, of Pike & Lustig, is representing Goldstein & Associates. In court filings, the firm claims that Schmitt has a documented history of unstable

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — With $27 million for water projects across Florida among $461
million in appropriations stricken from the state budget by the governor’s veto, officials of St. Lucie and Martin counties are unsure about the future of water projects they say are crucial. “It’s always a disappointment when you have the opportuni-
ty to better your water quality and you don’t get the funding,” County Commissioner Kim Johnson said. Another $5.7 million in funds included in the budget the state Legislature approved for St. Lucie County projects also fell victim
