Aaron Beauchamp – #2 on the field, #1 in our hearts Elizabeth Petrell

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE WEST — “Everyone leaves footprints in your memory, but the ones that leave footprints in your heart are the ones you will truly remember.” (Nicholas Sperling). In the case of Aaron Beauchamp, we might say cleat prints… Aaron Klein Stanford Beauchamp was a 9-year-old boy who tragically lost his life in a terrible bus accident in St. Lucie County on March 26, 2012. It was one of the worst school bus accidents in U. S. history and a shock and horror to the community. In trying to bring something positive out of a tragedy of this proportion and meanwhile honoring Aaron’s memory; The Aaron Project was born. The Aaron Project is a fundraising program designed to provide scholarships to St. Lucie County students to promote growth in areas in which Aaron excelled; arts, athletics and academics. After Aaron’s death, those who knew him and loved him wanted to establish a foun-

dation in his name to honor his memory. Originally when the idea first came about, Aaron’s parents Simon and Lilly Beauchamp met with Scott Van Duzer, founder of the Van Duzer Foundation, who runs a nonprofit organization that helps provide assistance to St. Lucie County residents in need due to unforeseen crises or tragedy. Van Duzer gave them advice on how to create and achieve a goal in what would be the best way to honor Aaron by establishing a foundation of their own. Although Aaron had many interests, a decision was made to focus a scholarship program based on arts, academics and athletics. In addition to the academic scholarships, the Golden Cleat Award is awarded to high school soccer students who are nominated by their coaches. The foundation gave out eight pairs of cleats worth approximately $1,000. The foundation is currently working on awarding arts grants for teachers, in which an undetermined amount will be awarded to a teacher, or group of teachers,

job seekers are seeing plenty of help-wanted signs. The county’s jobless numbers edged up slightly from April to May, but the employment rebound remains strong.

The state saw unemployment edge up a bit from April to May, 5.6 percent seasonally adjusted to 5.7. The Treasure Coast, too, saw a slight bump in unemployment.

However, the Treasure Coast typically sees an employment slump slightly from about May to October, due to its tourist season

Funeral services held for SLC deputy killed in I-95 crash Jay Meisel

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

PORT ST. LUCIE — Funeral services were scheduled for July 1 for St. Lucie County Deputy Alan Ross, who died in a vehicle accident last week while on his way to work. Ross, 50, who had worked 20 years with the Florida Department of Corrections and two years with the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, was to be buried at the White City Cemetery. The deputy died while driving to the St. Lucie County Jail the night of June 25 in a single vehicle crash on Interstate 95, one mile north of State Road 70, the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. His vehicle struck a utility pole. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara said in a press release that Ross did a good job at the St. Lucie County Jail. “Deputy Ross was an exemplary officer who earned two unit citations from the Sheriff’s Office and glowing personnel evaluations from his supervisors,” Mascara said in the press release. According to information from the Sheriff’s Office, Ross was born in Miami and graduated

Deputy Alan Ross from high school in Lake City, in 1982. He graduated from Lake City Community College in 1996 with an associate in science in criminal justice technology degree and then earned an associate of arts degree in 2006

Rick Kozell returns home to run for Congress Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — Rick Kozell recently headed to Palm Beach County from Washington D.C. He hopes voters in the 18th Congressional District send him back. Kozell is running for Congress. “I grew up here and graduated from high school here, Jupiter High School,” he said. Kozell is one of six Republicans who’ve announced runs for the district. Incumbent Patrick Murphy is vacating the seat in a bid for the Senate seat Marco Rubio is leaving to run for president. Kozell said his experience of running a small business to make his way through college inspires him to run for Congress. “As Washington has become more and more intrusive into local communities, we need someone who understands the challenges of small business,” Kozell

said. The congressional district covers St. Lucie and Martin counties, along with a sliver of Palm Beach County’s northern side. The district has a Cook Partisan Voting Index, PVI, of R+3. Florida’s rating is R+2. The R, of course, standing for Republican. Florida’s 22nd District, just south of the 18th District, has a D+3 rating. The D, again of course, meaning Democrat. Any Cook PVI score between R+5 and D+5 is counted as competitive. So far three Democrats have announced runs for the opening seat. On the Republican side, Martin County School Board member Rebecca Negron, St. Lucie County Commissioner Tod Mowery, and former State Representative Carl Domino have all announced candidacies. The Florida Division of Elections lists only Domino and Negron on the Republican side, so far. Three others have announced candidacies on YouTube or Facebook.

Rick Kozell They are Brian Mast, Paul Spain and Kozell. On the Democratic side, Stuart’s John “Juan” Xuna and two Palm Beach County commissioners are running to keep the seat blue. The commissioners are Melissa McKinlay and Pricilla Taylor. Xuna is the only Democratic can-

didate the state lists, so far. Kozell said that water quality is the biggest issue facing the district. “The Herbert Hoover Dike is in a state of catastrophic failure,” Kozell said. “If the dike was capable of doing its job, we wouldn’t have as much water released into the (Indian River Lagoon).” A short dike was built around some of Lake Okeechobee in the early 20th century to prevent annual sheet flows south. The Great Miami and Lake Okeechobee hurricanes, 1926 and 1928, overwhelmed the earthen dike. Flooding killed about 2,500, leading to the creation of the Okeechobee Flood Control District and construction of the Herbert Hoover Dike from the ‘30s to the ‘70s. The 143-mile structure almost completely encloses the lake. Engineers don’t want too much water pressing against the dike, in large part because of failure concerns. The Army Corps of En-

BEAUCHAMP from page 1 who incorporate visual arts into the curriculum. The scholarship program is now in its third year and has grown tremendously since its initiation. The first scholarship award was given to Gabe Chavez for $2,000 in 2013. Gabe is the only receiver of a recurring scholarship. In 2014, 10 $1,000 scholarships were handed out to St. Lucie County students. This year, scholarship recipients jumped up to 15, each receiving $1000. Chavez continues to receive his recurring scholarship in addition to the other recipients. The Aaron Project was the largest donor of scholarships by volume in St. Lucie County this year. To date, the scholarship program has earned over $50,000. The Aaron Project has received a huge outpouring of support from the community with large fund raising events including an annual golf tournament hosted by The Legacy Golf Club in St. Lucie West and collections have been taken at the Port St. High School Drama Department’s semi-annual shows. The last golf tournament on May 23rd raised approximately $24,000 and the most recent show at Port St. Lucie High School, “Seussical,” raised around $4,000. The Sons of Italy have now also chosen The Aaron Project as one of their charities to raise funds for through an event called Traveling Quarters Auction. This event was held June 3rd and raised approximately $500. The most recent fundraising event was at Buffalo Wild Wings on June 19th. There will be more

fundraising events to come with the restaurant in the future. Simon and Lilly Beauchamp, Vicki Rodriguez and Jay Stewart make up the Board of Directors for the Aaron Project, but there are a great many volunteers who have also been instrumental in helping by dedicating their time and fundraising efforts. For Aaron’s parents and those who knew him, they want the world to know what an amazing person he was and how he touched the lives of others. Had it not been for his untimely death The Aaron Project would not be in existence. It was his passion for the arts and athletics that brought this program to life. Aaron loved sports, yet those who knew him would say his number one passion was undeniably soccer. He played soccer for Mako, a competitive soccer club in Port St. Lucie. Aaron’s coach Fidel Sanchez, known by the kids as “Coach Tito,” recalls Aaron as being his star striker, the player who earned the most goals. He remembers Aaron being an extremely humble child despite his amazing athletic abilities. He was a natural leader whom the other players gravitated toward. He had always wanted to do good for himself, his parents, the coach and the team. “His composure in regard to the game was amazing.” Sanchez stated. “He was very coachable. He could always be counted on.” The loss of Aaron affected the team members greatly and although they continue to play, it was not the same after Aaron was gone. They all missed him, but they tried to carry on and do well in the game, for Aaron.

Elliott Museum presents lecture on the Great Gatsby FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — Daisy and Tom Buchanan and Nick Carraway come to life like never before when Michael Verde facilitates a conversation about “The Great Gatsby” from 3-5 p.m. on July 9 at the Elliott Museum. This literary review will illuminate the depths of meaning that lie beneath the surface plot and reveal nuances you may have

never realized before. Light refreshments will be served after the presentation. Seating is limited, so reserve your place by calling (772) 225-1961 or emailing asmith@elliottmuseum.org. Cost is $20 per person for non-members or $10 for members. It is suggested that you read or re-read the book before attending this event so that you will get the most from your experience.

BEAUCHAMP from page 6 will assist him in paying for his fourth year. “Out of all of the scholarships that I received, the one from The Aaron Project meant the most to us,” said Boltersdorf. “It really affected us a family. We cried when we received it.” Boltersdorf’s mother, Linda also remembers Aaron from teaching him to swim. She has been a very good friend of the Beauchamps for many years. She volunteers for fundraising event at The Legacy golf tournament and her husband plays in the event. She remembers Aaron being easy to teach. “He was always excited to learn and he would just jump right in the water. He had no fear.” Gabe Chavez, the very first scholarship recipient, remembers meeting Aaron his freshman year when Aaron’s mother, Lilly Beauchamp was the assistant principal at Central High School. He said Aaron loved Fort Pierce Central and was always at all of the sporting events helping out. He helped with football, basketball and soccer, but he remembers soccer being Aaron’s greatest love. He was very close with the soccer team. When Chavez received the scholarship, he had no idea ahead of

time that he would be receiving it, but he was extremely touched and honored. He is now studying Criminal Justice at St. Leo University and he feels that the scholarship has helped him a great deal by keeping him out of student loans. He explains that the Beauchamps have helped him out with more than just the scholarship. “I could always pick up the phone and call for help. They are like my second parents. I just want to make them proud,” he states of the Beauchamps. He is grateful for the scholarship, but his main concern is in helping to remember Aaron. He does volunteer work when he can, but with or without the scholarship he would always stay involved with the project. Chavez also helps maintain the garden that was built in remembrance of Aaron by his brother Benjamin Beauchamp for his Bar Mitzvah Project at the Temple Beth El. Aaron’s Garden was dedicated on May 19, 2013. Since the scholarship program began over two years ago, more than 40 awards have been given to students who exhibit the same qualities and characteristics as Aaron had. This project helps those in need and keeps Aaron’s legacy alive. Aaron’s favorite number was the same as his soc-

ST. LUCIE WEST — Fred R. Quackenbush, a World War II veteran who lives at the Cascades of St. Lucie West, loves to play tennis, walk and swim most days. He plays a mean sax, and he also sings many evenings. Violet Patricia “Pat” Chesworth — now Pat Quackenbush and also a resident of the Cascades — is a talented soloist. Together, she and Fred hit the karaoke stages all around St. Lucie County. With a birthday since the wedding he’s now 90, she’s 85. Proof that it’s never too late to find love — and a kindred spirit. “We have a lot of things in common,” Pat, who comes from a family with a lot of military service, said June 25 in a chat at the newlyweds’ home. Indeed, they begin tangents for each other, and finish each other’s sentences. Both of them are musical, both wound up in Florida, and they even both had black dogs named “Sam” at one time. So, after so many years, however did they meet? “It’s really weird,” Pat said, laughing. “Go ahead, you tell about it,” she urged her new husband. “Well, we knew each other, but not well.

“We both belong to the music club here (at the Cascades),” Fred said. “(About a year ago), we had just had our Christmas show. “I asked her to dance. I’d requested a slow number, but they played a fast one, and I lost my grip on her hand. Pat slipped and fell.” “I went right over,” Pat put in. “Talk about being literally swept off my feet!” “It was like I was a caveman, dragging her off,” Fred said with a grin. Having received an injury to her head, Pat was hospitalized for a time. Fred became a regular visitor. And so it became a match. Fred said he’s led an extremely lucky life all around, going back as far as wartime. Enlisting in 1943, he was accepted into the Army Air Force pilot training program, which consisted of three separate classes for pilots, navigators and bombardiers. “I wanted to be a pilot, and I qualified for all three, so I went to pilot school — but then (the Army) needed navigators, so I had to start over in navigator school,” Fred said. “Then, they wanted me to be an instructor. I finally got a crew — on VJ Day.” That coincidence guaranteed a large measure of

being different from other parts of the Sunshine State. However, when considering employment numbers from year to year, the area has had steady employment gains for every month for about three years. For example, May this year had better jobs numbers than May of last year. “This rise is normal,” Iris Estrada, public relations manager at CareerSource Research Coast, said. “We have a cyclical unemployment environment. It tends to rise during the summer and drop during the winter.” The Port St. Lucie metropolitan statistical area, MSA, includes all of St. Lucie and Martin counties. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate is measured in seasonal adjustments. This is a statistical technique that attempts to measure and remove the influences of predictable seasonal patterns to reveal how employment and unemployment change from month to month. The following job rates are not seasonally adjusted (NSA). In May the MSA had a 6.1 percent unemployment rate. About 12,000 workers were seeking jobs. The MSA had a 5.7 percent unemployment rate in April. Last May, the Port St. Lucie MSA had an unemployment rate of 7.3

percent. “This unemployment report just proves our region, along with the state of Florida, is recovering from the unemployment crisis,” Estrada said. Martin County came in with a 5.5 percent unemployment rate for May. St. Lucie’s was 6.4 percent. By comparison, Hendry County had the highest unemployment rate, 8.6 percent. Monroe had the lowest at 3.8 percent. In April, Martin County came in with a 5 percent unemployment rate. St. Lucie was a point higher than Martin, 6 percent. Last May, Martin’s unemployment rate was 6.1 percent, and St. Lucie’s was 7.7. The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the Port St. Lucie MSA was 7.1 percent in May 2014. For comparison, in May of 2014 the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.3 percent. “Our numbers are in line with the state and rest of the country,” Estrada said. The unemployment rate is calculated using a variety of methods. Among them are telephone interviews with workers. People who are able to work and report not having jobs, but looked for employment in the previous 30 days, are counted as unemployed.

PORT ST. LUCIE — Originally a cattle ranch and once planned to be the site of a housing development, the McCarty Ranch Preserve is increasingly becoming a popular recreation area. Though it’s uncertain how many people go to the preserve each day for recreation, “I can tell you it’s well used,” said Donna Rhoden, Port St. Lucie Utility Safety & Public Affairs manager. Currently, the recreational activities include fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, camping and kayaking. According to city officials the McCarty family used all or part of the land for cattle ranching until 2004, when the last piece was sold. Between then and now, St. Lucie

County considered a planned residential development for the land, but with the economic slowdown, that never materialized, Rhoden said. The city website states the city bought the 3,100 acres of land in 2012 and annexed it in 2013. While eventually, plans exist to have the land help meet the city’s water needs, Rhoden said, that for the foreseeable future the focus will be on recreation. Rhoden said that future plans to develop more recreation facilities depend on money being available. “It’s very primitive,” she said of the site. No formal picnic facilities exist and the restrooms are limited to some porta potties. During the next few months, “prefabricated

City awarded design for Crosstown Parkway FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

2PORT ST. LUCIE - The City of Port St. Lucie City Council awarded the Design/Build contract to the Archer Western and RS&H team for the Crosstown Parkway Extension Project, which will provide a new bridge crossing over the North Fork of the St. Lucie River in the City of Port St. Lucie. The team of Archer Western (prime contractor) and RS&H (Designer) was ranked first by the City’s Selection Committee. The team had both the best technical score and the lowest price. The City anticipates executing the contract with the Design/ Build team by mid-July. Final design is expected to be complete in six to eight months with construction anticipated to start in early 2016. Construction is anticipated to be complete in late 2018 and the estimated cost of the project is

Unemployment in the Sunshine State peaked in the early part of 2010 and has slowly declined since, even as labor participation rates have generally increased. Estrada said the state and area seem to be on solid employment ground.

safety, in which Fred could, and did, go on to college and earn a degree in agricultural research. He was married, with three children up to that point. “Would you believe I couldn’t find a single job (in his field)?” he said. “Well, there was one offer — at Los Alamos, on atomics. I said no to that.” Eventually, Fred became a teacher, first at Nutley High School, N.J., teaching vocational agriculture, and then in his hometown of Franklin Lakes, N.J., where he taught high school chemistry for 27 years before retiring. Then came a series of semi-nomadic years. First to Pompano Beach, then to Hilton Head, S.C., and then back to Florida to be near his by-then five children, four of whom live in the state. Alzheimer’s disease claimed his wife, and Fred stayed on, eventually buying his home in the Cascades. Meanwhile, Pat, a native of Brighton Beach, N.Y., “hated the cold so much that as soon as I was old enough, I headed straight here (to Florida),” she said. One of 12 children, she said, “I told my brothers and sisters, ‘I’m moving. If you want to, follow me.’ And five of them did.” That was in 1954. She was formerly married, and has one son. To Pat, there’s no downside to living in Florida, even hurricanes. She made an exception for Hurricane Andrew, however. Both she and Fred remember the horror well. “It was terrible, just terrible,” Pat said, shaking her head. “For days, it was just an incredible high wind. The rain came three days after that, and there was flooding everywhere.” Fred recalled “trees slicing other trees in half. I couldn’t believe it.” Pat jumped in. “And the trees around the houses somehow fell down away from them, not on them. It was amazing.” Hurricanes notwithstanding, the

couple enjoys their life at the Cascades. Fred plays tennis six days a week, and only recently has scaled back his 3-mile-a-day walk somewhat. Afterward, he takes a dip in the couple’s pool. Fred turns 90 on June 30, and the plan is to have “Quackenbush Day” at — where else? — the tennis court. Evenings are devoted to music. Pat, as a soloist, has performed in several productions at the Cascades. Indeed, “the reason I chose to live here is the beautiful stage,” she said. Fred started playing the saxophone at the age of 10. By age 12, “my mom formed a family band, and in high school, I formed my own band. We called it the ‘Jive Five,’” he said, chuckling. Pat and Fred, who sings in the Cascades chorus, can usually be found at karaoke nights throughout the county, whether at Elks or Moose lodges, American Legion Post 518 in Port St. Lucie, and the former Duffy’s Tavern (now Town Tavern), Port St. Lucie, among other places. “We go out as often as four nights a week,” Pat said. “We have a good karaoke group right here in the Cascades. Really, the talent is amazing. “There are a lot of people who are very talented, but only now (in their lives) are they expressing it.” Together, Fred and Pat maintain a pace that would tire many a younger couple. Now that they’re married, Pat plans to sell her Cascades home and move into Fred’s home, which is now theirs together. Fred designed the ornamental landscaping around the house, and enjoys trimming his own shrubbery. Pat enjoys drawing, in addition to music. “Music and art, my two favorite things in life,” she said. Together, they create a unique chemistry of age, experience and energy that just won’t quit. If love’s song is the sweetest of all, these two will be making music for quite a time to come.

gineers started dike rehabilitation projects in 2007 that would allow the lake to hold more water, but many critics — including Martin County — have said more needs to be done much faster. “That dike is a good example of the federal government in action,” Kozell said. “It’s not working; they’re not fixing it.” Kozell said that few discuss improving the Herbert Hoover Dike when talking about reducing the Lake Okeechobee discharges that foul the St. Lucie and Indian rivers, among others. “It’s sad that’s lost in the dialog,” he said. Kozell added, “The reason fixing the dike is lost is because the government spends all the money it has coming in and then some.” The biggest issue facing the nation, Kozell said, is the federal tax and regulation systems stifling business development. “As a small business owner I saw that our tax system is really burdening business,” he said. “I think one thing we could be doing is trying to simplify and flatten the tax code.” Additionally, Kozell said, “One of the things I saw as a business attorney, is we have a very dense scheme of regulations that creates a challenging situation for businesses. Some businesses don’t

even know the requirements on them.” Kozell hopes to qualify by petition. Vicki Davis, Martin County’s Supervisor of Elections, said candidates for the 18th Congressional District who want to qualify by petition need to gather 4,854 signatures by next year. She said signers are free in the primaries and general elections for 2016 to vote for candidates other than those they signed qualifying petitions for. A petition signer is only helping a candidate qualify for a run without having to pay the filing fee, 6 percent of the annual salary of the office sought. The current salary of a rank-and-file member of Congress is $174,000. It’s been that since 2009. Those who don’t collect the needed signatures would have to pay nearly $10,500 to qualify. Kozell, 33, has a wife, Lilia, and infant daughter. In addition to having a degree from Georgetown Law Center, he has a business degree from Wake Forest University. He’s never held elected office, but is an appointee to the Palm Beach County Land Development Regulation Advisory Board. More about Kozell is at his campaign web site, www.rickkozel. com. The campaign phone number is (561) 252-5423.

PORT ST. LUCIE — What started as a grassroots, local effort to help kids stay off the streets has turned into a national model for saving lives and creating brighter futures. Led by the Gulfstream Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Scott Van Duzer, of St. Lucie West, has put together a team of individuals who may just change the mindset of a generation. In 2013, Van Duzer and a group of volunteers worked tirelessly to create an opportunity for at-risk adolescent males to

become engaged in Boy Scouting. The students who attended a school with behavioral and academic issues, lived almost exclusively in the most dangerous and violent, gang-riddled areas of St. Lucie County, Florida. Sixty boys initially expressed a desire to become Boy Scouts through Troop 772, named for the area code of its location, and a year later, the improvement to the boys’ grades, attitudes, and lives was astonishing enough to capture the attention and interest of officials in St. Louis,

buildings (serving as rest rooms) will be installed,” she said. Other than that, the change most likely during the near future will be more organized recreational activities, said Larry Lankow, who handles special events for the Port St. Lucie Parks and Recreation Department supervisor/ special events. Lankow said that for Valentine’s Day they had a sunset horseback ride that drew about 20 riders. Other events planned include a 5K run, a fishing tournament in August and a bonfire and hayride in November. Eventually, he said, the city would like to have camp sites at the preserve, “but that is still in the works.” There’s also talk of having a hog hunt, as there’s between 5,000 and 6,000 wild hogs on the

site, Lankow said. In the more distant future – and the city believes that will be around 2040 — a need will exist to use part of the property to provide drinking water for residents, Rhoden said. The plan is to pump water from the C-23 canal into lakes on the property created by rock mining, she said. That water, when needed, would be treated and used as a water supply for residents, she said. Currently, the South Florida Water Management District allows the city to obtain water from wells. But in the future the district’s regulations could restrict that and the city wants to be prepared with an alternative source of water. “We don’t think that’s going to happen today, tomorrow or anytime soon, but we want to be prepared,” Rhoden said.

Missouri, where racial issues are prominent and touchy. Van Duzer, a local business owner in Fort Pierce, assembled a team which included a mayor, police chief, county commissioner, congressman, fire chief, and member of the Florida House of Representatives. Last month, the team got a lot stronger when Jared Cook, tight end for the St. Louis Rams, came on board and agreed to be the voice of the program, which is called Restoring the Village. Cook, who is halfway through a five-year contract with the St. Louis Rams, has been active in several communities including St. Louis, Atlanta, Columbia and Nashville

and decided to join the St. Lucie County team of Restoring the Village as the national spokesperson to offer his voice in assistance and support. The program is very close to Jared’s heart, and he was deeply touched when asked to be a voice for the Restoring the Village Initiative. Cook understands firsthand how exposure to positive environments and positive leaders can change the path of a child immediately. The team immediately got to work, traveling to Washington, D.C., to meet with individuals from My Brother’s Keeper, a national initiative to help youth stay on track. Goals of My Brother’s Keeper include making sure children enter school cognitively, physically, socially, and emotionally ready, ensuring they read at grade level by third grade, ensuring graduation and post-secondary education or training, ensuring that youth out of school are employed and remain safe from violent crime. While in Washington, D.C., Cook, who was the 2012 Walter Payton Award Winner for the

WWW.YOURVOICEWEEKLY.COM St. Louis Rams, was recognized by Florida Congressman Patrick Murphy for his dedication to community service and his latest affiliation with Restoring the Village and Team 772. After meeting with leaders from My Brother’s Keeper in Washington, D.C., to discuss collaboration, the team traveled to Baltimore, Maryland, to meet with local leaders to help them establish Boy Scout Troops like Troop 772. Because of the success of Troop 772, a number of communities, including Ferguson, Missouri, have expressed interest in replicating the model. Indeed, after meeting with Van Duzer earlier this year, six new 772 Team Boy Scout troops were created in Ferguson and the surrounding communities. Next up for Jared

Cook, Scott Van Duzer, and the rest of the Restoring the Village team are meetings in Selma, Alabama; Plant City, Florida; and Richmond, Virginia, have already created troops modeled after 772. Nashville, Tenn., Jacksonville, and Miami, have expressed interest in replicating the model and creating hope and a future for children. With Cook as a spokesperson, Van Duzer and the team hope to see real change occur. Van Duzer’s own foundation has long run on the words of philanthropist Margaret Mead, who said, “Never doubt that a small, thoughtful group of committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing which ever has.” This small, thoughtful group has big plans to help change the world for children now and into the future. MEALS from page 23 of our 2014 Summer Meals Program, we set a goal not only to expand it in 2015 but to enhance it by providing the freshest, most nutritious food possible to children” Treasure Coast Food Bank CEO Judy Cruz said. “Few programs galvanize our community like our Summer Meals Program. The children we reach are vulnerable, and their families need us to bridge the gap for the 10 weeks when school is out and those much needed school assistance programs are not available. Not only are we accomplishing those goals, but our program has become an economic engine, creating 10 new jobs this summer,” Cruz added. Treasure Coast Food Bank has hired several professionals for the program, including the kitchen manager, food preparers, and drivers. Each day begins before 6 a.m. Before the sun rises, the lunch crew begins washing, chopping, and assembling the foods that the children will eat just hours later. On a typical day, they’re preparing more than 200 pounds of carrots and 200 pounds of broccoli florets along with several thousand pounds of fresh roasted turkey breast. Meals are packed, and drivers load the hundreds of coolers that

The children we reach are vulnerable, and their families need us to bridge the gap for the 10 weeks when school is out and those much needed school assistance programs are not available. Judy Cruz Chief Executive Officer Treasure Coast Food Bank are then delivered to the 32 Summer Meals sites throughout the Treasure Coast. In addition, children participating in the Summer Meals Program are receiving fresh produce to take home, thanks to a generous grant through ConAgra Foods of Omaha, Neb., and Feeding America. At Treasure Coast Food Bank’s Your Plate Health & Wellness Center in Fort Pierce as well as the other sites, the results of the program are evident every day as children are cleaning their plates. “The kids have really responded well to having fresh-made lunches and locally grown fruits,” said Krista Garofalo, director of programs for Treasure Coast Food Bank. “It’s important that we provide food that is not only nutritionally sound but that kids will eat and enjoy.” The Summer Meals Program’s food preparation operation is the

first step in what will be a major conversion of The Warehouse into a full blown production kitchen later this year. Having a production kitchen will enable Treasure Coast Food Bank to deliver more fresh fruits and vegetables to its clients by processing them into more usable portions as well as maximizing the use of foods with a short shelf life. Earlier this year Treasure Coast Food Bank began a piloted rollout of the Farm to School program, providing St Lucie County Schools with locally sourced and grown vegetables. “This is the next step in the evolution of our mission,” Cruz said. “Having a production kitchen will enable us to get more Florida grown fruits and vegetables in the hands of families that need it, and I’m happy that we were able to expand the process with the Summer Meals Program.”

Rabies alert issued after attack on dogs in St. Lucie County FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

PORT ST. LUCIE — The Florida Department of Health in Indian River and St. Lucie Counties have issued a rabies alert for southern Indian River County and northern St. Lucie County. This alert is in response to a raccoon that tested positive for rabies on June 19 following an unprovoked attack on two domestic dogs. Earlier this month, the Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County issued a rabies

alert for the central geographical region of St. Lucie County in response to a cat that tested positive for rabies reported on June 2. Health officials urge residents to protect themselves from the risk of rabies exposure by avoiding contact with wild and stray animals and to vaccinate their pets. “We strongly advise residents not to approach or feed wild and stray animals, and keep their pets vaccinated,” said Miranda Hawker, Indian River County Health Officer. All residents of Indian River and St. Lucie

County should be aware that rabies is present in the wild animal population and domestic animals are at risk if not vaccinated. The public is asked to maintain a heightened awareness that rabies is active in Indian River and St. Lucie Counties. Alerts are designed to increase awareness to the public, but they should not give a false sense of security to areas that have not been named as under an alert.

Port St Lucie, FL- The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have generic names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, or Cymbalta and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects.

As you can see in Figure 2 , as the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning and many additional symptoms. l blood these very smal Figure2: When seased they begin di e vessels becom the nerves begin to d to shrivel up an . te ra ne ge de

The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage then your condition can been treated

In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined. 1. What is the underlying cause? 2. How Much Nerve Damage Has Been Sustained. NOTE: Once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is nothing that we can do for you.

3. How much treatment will your condition require?

The treatment that is provided at our clinic has three main goals: 1. Increase blood flow

The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here on the Treasure Coast that offers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects. (see the special neruopathy severity examination at the end of this article)

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow.

Dr. John Silva at The Neuropathy Relief Center will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy.

3. Decrease brain-based pain Part o or treatment protocol lizes a specialized low level light (L.E.D.) therapy to increase blood flow as well as treatments to heal the nerve damage.

RABIES from page 25 This rabies alert will remain in effect for 60 days for: South of Oslo Road; North of Indrio Road; East of I-95; and West of US Hwy 1 and Turnpike Feeder Road. An animal with rabies could infect other wild animals or domestic animals that have not been vaccinated against rabies. All domestic animals should be vaccinated against rabies and all wildlife contact should be avoided, particularly raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats and coyotes. Free-ranging domestic cats that compete with wild animals for food sources are also a rabies risk. “An exposure to rabies can be fatal for a human or a pet, and we will continue to stress the importance of vaccination for pets and other animals which represent the best preventive measure available,” said St. Lucie County Health Officer Clint Sperber. Rabies is a deadly viral disease of the nervous system that can be prevented, but not cured. The virus is spread through the saliva of infected warm-blooded animals to other animals or persons, usually through a bite. Infection may also occur if saliva enters open wounds, the mouth or eyes of another animal or person. Appropriate rabies vaccine treatment

started soon after the exposure will protect an exposed person from the disease. Here are some tips to protect you and your pets from rabies: Keep rabies vaccinations up to date for all pets. If your pet is bitten by a wild animal, seek veterinary assistance immediately and report the incident to your local animal control agency. (See contact information below) Call your local animal control agency directly to remove any wild or stray animals from your neighborhood that are injured or demonstrate unusual behavior. Do not handle, feed or unintentionally attract wild or stray animals, including cats, by leaving pet food outside or garbage cans open. Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home. Call animal control for assistance rather than trying to nurse injured or sick wild or stray animals. Teach children never to handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even if they appear friendly. Prevent bats from entering living quarters or occupied spaces in homes, churches, schools and other similar areas, where they might come in contact with people and pets. Persons who have been bitten

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – The little red truck is heading back to the Sunrise Theatre. Missoula Children’s Theatre will hold the second of four workshops/camps from July 13-17, with a performance of the original musical, “Sleeping Beauty,” July 17. For each workshop, MCT sends a team of two actor/directors who come with all the sets, props and costumes necessary to stage the show. They audition local kids ages 6-18 and in one week, hold rehearsals and put on a show that Friday night after the camp. Chance Carter and Alyssa Cooper are the team coming to Fort Pierce for “Sleeping Beauty.” Carter will play the Court Jester and Cooper will direct. They spoke by phone from a town in Georgia where they had just completed rehearsals for the day. “It’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ with a small rock twist,” Carter said. “The evil Fairy Godmother casts a spell and Sleeping Beauty pricks her finger on a spindle needle and falls asleep for 500 years. When she wakes up, it’s 1957. The music has a little rock ‘n roll twang.” The production can accommodate 64 youngsters and there are many roles to cast, along with 250 costumes. “The trolls are the mischief-makers,” Car-

THEATRE from page 29 ter said. “They’re played by the oldest male campers. The oldest female campers play fairies who do good and make all the magic happen. There are palace attendants, musicians, guards, maids and cooks. They’re fun parts. The youngest are caterpillars. By the end, they’re butterflies. It’s one of the cutest parts of the show. It’s awesome and really, really fun to watch.” Carter is originally from a farm town outside of Des Moines, but he left Iowa to attend the University of Montana at Missoula. He majored in theater practice and performance and, when he graduated, auditioned for MCT. “I knew I believed in what they were doing, taking theater into the community,” Carter said. “It’s more than just putting on a play. It’s taking a message and putting it into action. We provide a community. For a week, they have a place to belong. That’s what’s so powerful, gaining lifelong skills that can spur a future leader or the next great actor or writer or teacher. It’s skills we’re able to provide.” While MCT productions are intended for 64 youngsters, that number is not a requirement. “We were on a military base where only 29 showed up,” Carter said. “The writer is so

creative and cut the cast. We still had the same show without losing the meaning or value of the show. The show works in a gymnasium, and auditorium or a library. The kids get the experience.” Carter interned with MCT and decided to apply when he graduated. “It’s mystifying to watch them transform 60+ kids into a production,” he said, “It’s the adventure of a lifetime.” His partner, Alyssa Carter, majored in musical theater at Southeast Missouri State College. This is her first job after college. She applied to MCT because she believed in what they do. “I believe in the mission statement about reaching children who don’t have theater experience we all grew up with,” she said. “I’ve had many, many people say this was the first thing they saw, or performed in.” Missoula Children’s Theatre presents its second workshop/ camp of the summer “Sleeping Beauty” at the Sunrise Theatre 117. S. Second St., Fort Pierce, from July 13-17. There will be a performance July 17 at 7 p.m. that is open to the public. Tickets are $10. TREASURE COAST — The 300th anniversary of the sinking of the Spanish Fleet off our coastline is being commemorated by Christian FM radio. In the late 90’s and early in the new century Christian FM conducted an honest-to-goodness treasure hunt every summer in partnership with Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum in Sebastian and Key West. They are now reprising one of their promotions that will celebrate the 1715 Fleet and the naming of our coastline, The Treasure Coast. The contest begins July 6 and consists of hiding 7 keys along the coast in strategic locations. Every hour from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. listeners will tune in for clues that will ultimately lead someone to find the hidden key. Once located the finder will follow the instructions as to where to call for authentication and will automatically win a half-Reale 1715 fleet coin with certificate of

authenticity worth over $200. The clues will initially be challenging but those with local knowledge or who know how to research our local history will certainly have an advantage in getting to the spot first. No digging or crossing onto private property is required, only a hunter’s license that can be obtained by logging on to www.christianfm. com. Once all seven keys are found (and this may well take until the end of July) all 7 Key-Finders will be invited to a Treasure Party where each will try their key in the lock of a treasure chest containing thousands of dollars’ worth of prizes including real treasure from the Spanish Fleet donated by Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum. Christian FM is heard from South Brevard to Fort Pierce at 91.9FM and from Fort Pierce to North Martin County on 96.3FM. “We got everything we needed to keep caring fo‰ Dad at home.”

Serving all, regardless of ability to pay.

“My dad had Alzheimer’s disease for years, and Vivian and I took care of him in our home. A friend told me how Treasure Coast Hospice can help. They provided Dad’s medications, a wheelchair, a shower chair and oxygen. The RN and hospice aide showed us their love and patience as they helped us give Dad all the care he needed. We suggest calling Treasure Coast Hospice as early as possible.”

Since entering the Hearing Healthcare field I have learned quite a bit. Not from the books or schools I’ve attended but from my clients! With very few exceptions the folks that have been to other hearing aid providers tell me that they felt “sold” and that the concern Joe Mutter, H.A.S. seemed to be about how quickly they could sign the order forms to buy hearing aids.
