ST. LUCIE WEST — Youth athletes from the Mako Soccer Club are working tirelessly to transform the park that houses their daily practices into a beautiful

home with a little tender loving care and help from the community. The club’s fundraising and events director, Eulises Munoz, who’s spearheading the beautification project, said the William McChesney Park, which has played host to the 20-year-old soccer club since its early days, has been long overdue for a facelift. Munoz, who works on the project each weekend with doz-

ens of the 2,800 youth registered in the club, said the project also teaches the club’s children and teens about responsibility and civility. The club boasts dozens of year-round recreational and competitive teams for every age, toddlers to teens, Munoz said. “It would be a sense of pride for the community to pitch into the park,” said Munoz, who was

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer John Fowler, Guitar Center store manager, is carried in like a rock star during the grand opening of the new retail music store in St. Lucie West Thursday, June 27. The grand opening was attended by several thousand patrons looking to win prizes, discount purchases and to sign up for music classes taught by talented local musicians.

ST. LUCIE WEST — With rock music that pierced the air and a dense crowd that converged on the Town Center at St. Lucie West last week, one would think The Beatles had a second coming. Although not quite on the scale of a British band reunion, a significant new era for the music scene on the Treasure Coast was born. On June 27, Guitar Center opened its 249th store nationwide in St. Lucie West. The grand opening included a red carpet event, a concert by Treasure Coast-based Ohana Band and thousands of dollars in giveaways and sales. Thousands across the area attended to dance, jam out and shop the 7,500-square-foot, state-of-the-art store. Tristan Komorny, 13, a Port St. Lucie musician, plucked at the strings of a metallic green electric guitar manufactured by Schecter like a veteran during the opening. Tristan, who started playing two

years ago, said he’s excited about the camaraderie the store will bring. “I’m going to be able to meet a whole new load of people to start a band with. It’s going to be awesome,” Tristan said. “And more people will be inspired to play.” Dennis Sunday, 19, a Jensen Beach guitarist said local musicians are buzzing about the store’s arrival. “It’s amazing, actually. You have small stores, but you don’t have big stores like this,” said Sunday, who was satisfied with the stock and prices. Sunday also expects the store to become a hub for local artists to network and make melodies. “I think it’s great. A lot of people can come together now and jam together now.” The store’s manager, John Fowler, said the massive showing speaks volumes about the local music community. “I’ve gotten a chance to meet a lot of musicians. I know there’s

The store is also an economic stimulus, Wallis said. “We felt that that area needed a music store like ours to come to, plus we want to help provide jobs to locals,” he said. “We want to be part of the community even though we are a big box chain.” The store hired 25 employees, including highly-trained music, instrument and vocal instructors, Wallis said. The center, with its focal point of more than 500 electric, acoustic and bass guitars meticulously positioned on a main wall, offers far more than just the string instrument. The store sells everything from speakers, power amplifiers and drums to lighting, keyboards

and DJ mixing equipment and software. The store also performs repairs, takes trade-ins and sells used instruments, Wallis said. Guitar Center price matches and offers the lowest deal, Wallis said. Musicians can test any instrument before purchasing it, he said. Guitar Center also offers instrument, vocal and recording classes, which are filling up fast. Some are even free and the schedules are posted regularly on the store’s website. Wallis said the expansive inventory, great prices and place for artists to congregate will solidify the Treasure Coast as an ideal location to make music. “It means (the music community is) healthy and it’s strong and it’s going to get a lot stronger now that we’re here. Because that’s why we’re here, to help people make music,” Wallis said.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The two St. Lucie County Tax Collector’s offices will soon have new operating hours. Beginning Monday, Aug. 5, the branches located in Fort Pierce and in Port St. Lucie will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with driver license services offered from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tax collector Chris Craft said the change will allow for valuable staff training to take place each morning for the majority of the agency’s 92 employees. “Growth and development are important, and our goal is to provide our staff with the ongoing resources they need to help them be the best at what they do — serve the public,” Craft said. “By modifying our operating hours, we can meet that goal and not incur overtime costs.” The training will include position-specific and customer

FORT PIERCE — Christopher “Doc” Bailey has a passion for flying. He is the owner of sport aircraft manufacturer Renegade Light Sport and moved his business from Missouri to the St. Lucie County International Airport in February. Now, Bailey hopes to share that passion with disabled veterans. He and other volunteers will teach them to fly in the hope that it will fulfill their dreams and heal their spirits. Bailey was a medevac helicopter pilot for the U.S. Army and the Missouri National Guard. He saw soldiers with terrible injuries on the battlefield. When he returned to visit them in the hospital, many with missing limbs or other disabilities, he saw the despair in their eyes. “I picked up a lot of wounded people and took them to the hospital,” he said. “We used to go

CHILI from page 1 I will say that some teams try to be unique with their chili,” chili chairwoman Cathy Townsend said. “Last year, we had somebody enter a chocolate chili. Somebody also entered a pear and cinnamon chili.” Sweet, sour, spicy or slightly seasoned, there are only two ingredients that are strictly forbidden by the International Chili Society, Townsend said. Sans the two elements, it’s a mitts-off battle for the coveted title. “According to the international chili rules, it has no beans and no pasta,” Townsend said. Reigning champions from the St. Lucie County Tax Collector’s Office said they’re ready for a showdown. “We’d love to keep that title,” said Melodye Hendrix, director of communications for the St. Lucie County Tax Collector’s Office. Hendrix remained mum on what recipe the office will use this year. Townsend said as many as 7,000 are projected to attend. For the first time, the city of Fort Pierce will provide a shuttle system for overflow parking for the admission-free event. For $5, sample kits with six small tasting bowls will be on sale. Each team also will sell larger bowls. Perhaps the best part of the festivities is where the proceeds end up, Townsend said. For the fifth year in a row, The Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County will be the benefactors of the fundraising event. Last year, the event garnered approximately $50,000. Minus the cost to hold the event, a check

for $32,000 was cut to the club, which provides a safe haven for children in the community. This year, Townsend hopes to give the club $50,000 for its cause, which has managed to survive a slew of recent budget cuts. Since it started 31 years ago, the event has raised close to $3 million for local charitable organizations. “It’s what is really the meat of what keeps these organizations going right now,” Townsend said of public donations. Stephanie Morgan, the club’s chief volunteer officer, said the event is key in keeping the club operational. “On behalf of the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County and the board of directors, I extend a heartfelt and grateful thank you to the Fort Pierce Exchange Club and all of the supporters of the Chili Cook-Off,” Morgan said in an emailed statement. “The Cook-Off will help us to continue to provide quality programs and services for thousands of youth in St. Lucie County.” The team that raises the most money will also snag a coveted trophy, Townsend said. The defending champ is the Fort Pierce Police Department, which raised more than $5,000 last year. “We want somebody to challenge us to raise more money because we know the money is going to kids right here in the community who need those services,” team captain and police spokesman Sgt. Dennis McWilliams said. To ensure the force keeps its title, the department has sold T-shirts and held a public breakfast to

CHILI from page 6 raise money. “We’re basically throwing down the fundraising gauntlet,” McWilliams said. The event will also include musical entertainment and a Little Mr. Pee Wee and Miss Chili Pepper contest. A large portion of the Fenn Center will be transformed into a mock Boys & Girls clubhouse for the day, complete with pool tables, games, coloring stations for toddlers, face painting, balloons and more. This year’s theme is television game shows. Each team will select a theme associated with a TV game show, which will add to the display of creativity and fun. The theme is one every age will enjoy, Townsend said. “It’s going to bridge all of the (age) gaps so that there’s going to be fun for every age group,” Townsend said. “We also brought in a kids room this year, so no matter how old you are, you’ll be able to relate to something.” For more information on the 31st annual Fort Pierce Exchange Club Chili Cook-off, visit www.fortpierceexchangeclub.com When: Saturday, July 13 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Where: Havert L. TREASURE COAST — Budding business owners on the Treasure Coast now have a new launchpad for their entrepreneurial endeavors. Earlier this year, Indian River State College started a Virtual Incubator which offers entrepreneurs and business startups a customized step-by-step approach to plan, launch and maintain stable businesses. “Business incubation is basically a comprehensive business

assistance program that helps startups and early stage firms improve their chances of growing into healthy, sustainable companies,” incubator coordinator Tom Kindred Jr. said. Depending on the startup’s complexity, the new business may be eligible to receive office space at the school’s state-of-theart Brown Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the college’s main campus in Fort Pierce. IRSC from page 9 tute at the school. Office space comes with meeting and conference rooms and office equipment, Kindred said. Enrolled clients receive business coaching, links to lawyers and accountants, educational seminars, marketing assistance and access to support services. As part of the program, members also receive unlimited guidance from Small Business Development Center at the college. Also depending on the intricacy of the business, some can join for as little as $25 and obtain an outline of success from college professionals, Kindred said. “We have an initial meeting, we talk about their idea, we kick around some thoughts. We kind of tell them the good, the bad and the ugly about starting businesses,” Kindred said of the enrollment process. “We’re candid with them about the chances and if there’s still interest there and we still want to pursue it and if the idea has some opportunity and some value to get to the commercial stage, the Small Business Development Center will work with them free of charge.” It’s critical small businesses flourish to ensure a sound economy, Kindred said. The program will help that happen, he said. “From an incubation standpoint, this country is always going to need innovators, inventors and entrepreneurs, because these people really are the backbone of the economy,” Kindred said. “Frankly, entrepreneurship equals recovery.” Current clients represent fields including health care technology, mobile app development, software development, retail and aquaculture. Approximately 15 are enrolled, Kindred said. Kindred expects clients to maintain enrollment until they no longer need assistance, a time period that could span days, weeks, months or even years. Judging by national statistics, Kindred expects clients to experience an abundance of success upon graduation.

“Eighty-seven percent of businesses that graduated out of an incubator are still in business five years later,” said Kindred, who added there are approximately 1,400 business incubators across the country. That high success rate put the program on the radar of the Port St. Lucie City Council. Councilman Ron Bowen said the incubator was casually mentioned at the close of a recent meeting, sparking Bowen to do his homework. Bowen hopes to promote the program in some sort of official capacity. “My goal would be to have a waiting list for entrepreneurs — male, females, old, young — who have business ideas to see if they’re legitimate and if they could fly,” Bowen said. The next step is for incubator representatives to educate the rest of the council to determine what volume the council will promote the program, Bowen said. Kindred, who recently met with Bowen, said the prospect of a city partnership would bolster the area’s economy. “It’s a great partnership,” Kindred said. “We truly are an economic development tool that we want all of the municipalities to recognize.” Councilwoman Michelle Berger said she’s open to the notion of partnering with the program. “It’s about how can we help and utilize our resources to benefit small business growth,” Berger said. Berger said the possibility of holding an extension of the program at the now vacant Digital Domain Tradition Studios should be discussed among council members should the structure not sell soon. “If it’s not going to be usable, if it doesn’t make sense to sell it in whatever capacity we’re looking at now, then we need something to kind of bridge us between now and when we have 400,000 people here and can utilize it a little more effectively,” Berger said. For more information on the Virtual Incubator, call 1-888-2831177 or visit www.irscbiz.com.

Mako soccer player Theresa Cortez took part in the beautification project of McChesney Park Saturday, June 29 in St. Lucie West. The park is home to the 20-yearold soccer club that is a staple to the thousands of youth who learn about team work through their soccer experiences.

inspired to start the project after Mako member, Aaron Beauchamp, 9, was killed in a St. Lucie County School bus crash last year. A special stone to honor the avid soccer player will be installed in the park, Munoz said. Volunteer parents, children and generous business owners have already painted the clubhouse, added window treatments, pressure-cleaned, replaced ceiling tiles in the concession stands, purchased a new jumbo-electronic score board, added low-maintenance plants and even installed an overhead projector and video projector, donated by the Palm Beach County School District, Munoz said. The 24.5-acre park has six soccer fields with lights, a fenced playground, a clubhouse, pavilions and a concession area. But there’s still more work to be done, and without community help, it won’t be possible, Munoz said. The Mako Soccer Club is selling engraved, personalized bricks to support its McChesney Park beautification project. Each personalized brick will surround the base of a yet-to-be-installed bronze statue of a boy and girl footing a soccer ball, Munoz said. The statue will signify Mako’s core mission, which ensures that children have fun playing the game. Bricks also will be positioned around the base of the flag pole to honor the city’s first mayor and military service members, Munoz said. Paving, more landscaping, fencing and gutter repair still needs to be completed. Once it’s all said and done, McChesney will be a place of great community accomplishment, Munoz said. “When everybody goes there they can feel like it’s a family park,” Munoz said. “We all can go there, relax and see the amount of work that’s been done there.” Munoz estimates the club will need $6,000 to $7,000 in materi-

al costs to complete the project. Labor will be volunteered, he added. City officials are also on board, offering up an undetermined amount of funds and heavy equipment for the bigger jobs. “When I met with the city manager I said, ‘You know whatever we need to do to make sure that the project gets finished, let’s make sure we, you know, cap it off,’” Councilwoman Michelle Berger said. Berger was touched the club initiated project. “I love the project because it comes from the heart of the parents and the kids that are using the park the most,” she said. “So often it really is city-driven, when we do improvements to parks, and this one was created and initiated by the parents and the kids.” Brian Siringo, a St. Lucie West resident and director of coaching for Mako, said he’s impressed by his club. “It makes me feel proud, because again, instead of just taking something for granted, they’re trying to take responsibility and be able to feel proud at a place they play,” He said. “To be able to have your own fingerprints on it is wonderful.” Siringo’s daughter, Taylor, 12, who plays for the U-13 competitive team, volunteers every weekend to help with the project. “It’s important to me, because I’m paying back the community,” said Taylor, who’s been busy mulching, painting and laying bricks. “I was happy that I could do it and I really wanted to start whenever I could.” Prices for engraved bricks for the beautification project range from $50-$100. To purchase one or donate, visit Mako Soccer Club’s website at www.makosoccer.com McChesney Park is located at 1585 S.W. Cashmere Blvd., St. Lucie West. Hours are daily from 8 a.m.-10 p.m.

Prepare for the Storm

ST. LUCIE COUNTY —‘The Invisible War,’ a film exposing sexual violence in the military, will be shown at the Inner Truth Project Center , 2190 Reserve Park Trace, No. 13, Port St. Lucie, on Thursday, July 11, 6 p.m. The cost is $12 per person, but U.S. veterans are free. The movie will be followed by a panel discussion. The Invisible War is a groundbreaking investigation about one of America’s most shameful and best-kept secrets: the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military. The film paints a startling picture of the extent of the problem — today, a female soldier in combat zones is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. The Department of Defense estimates there were a staggering 19,300 service members sexually assaulted in 2010 alone. Focusing on the powerfully emotional stories of rape victims, The Invisible War is a moving indict-

ment of the systemic cover-up of military sex crimes, chronicling the women’s struggles to rebuild their lives and fight for justice. It also features hard-hitting interviews with high-ranking military officials and members of Congress that reveal the perfect storm of conditions that exist for rape in the military, its long-hidden history, and what can be done to bring about much needed change. For more information visit www. innertruthproject.org, or contact Mindi Fetterman at (561) 9099991 or by e-mail innertruthproject@gmail.com. The Inner Truth Project Center provides an environment where survivors of sexual abuse, violence or rape can bravely share the truth about their experience and receive the help they need to find strength, hope and health ... one story at a time. For more information, visit www. innertruthproject.org and www. facebook.com/InnerTruthProject, or call (561) 909-9991.

Meet your St. Lucie Mets Matthew Bowman – starting pitcher Patrick Bernadeau

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE WEST — Some players are just bigger, stronger and faster than the rest, but for St. Lucie Mets starting pitcher Matthew Bowman, he hopes to outwork his way to the majors. Bowman, 22, standing at just 6 feet and weighing 165 pounds, was selected in the 13th round (410th overall) out of Princeton University by the New York Mets organization in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft. Selected deep in the draft and coming from a school that isn’t exactly a baseball powerhouse, Bowman is realistic about his chances of taking the next step, but understands his best chance at making it in the big leagues is his work ethic. “I understand that being an undersized right-handed pitcher, coming out of an Ivy League school and being drafted after the 10th round, the odds of actually making a living for myself as a baseball player is very low,” Bowman said. “But I’m here and I’d like to give my dream a shot.” “I have no disillusions about the fact that I was drafted in the 13th round, the 410th overall pick, which means the 409 selected kids before me, in that one year, were better baseball players than me.” “If I don’t understand that I have limitations and that I have things I need to work

on, then at best, you’ll probably stay in place. But to me, if you aren’t working to get better, you are probably getting worse.” In just under a year’s time, Bowman has vaulted up the Class A ladder, where he appeared in just 17 combined games in Class ABrooklyn and Class A Savannah before being promoted to St. Lucie. With every step taken, he’s recognized a change in the opposing hitter’s approach. “Coming here, everyone is a year older and a year more mature,” Bowman said. “The hitters have more of a game plan. They aren’t free swingers here like in the two levels before.” “I know what they are trying to do. They know what I’m trying to do. It becomes a little more of a chest match for me than just throwing.” After being called up to St. Lucie in May, Bowman has been arguably the best starter on the staff. At the time of press, Bowman has compiled a 4-1 record in nine starts with a 2.33 ERA. Bowman has 61 strikeouts while allowing just 11 walks in 58 innings. Batters are hitting only .207 off of the right-hander. “I’ve been pleased with my performance so far this season,” Bowman said. “Really, when I go out there, all I hope to do is leave the game with the team in a position to still win or to be in striking distance. I’ve been able to do that for most of the season and I’ve been happy with how things have gone so far.”

Matthew Bowman This upcoming fall, Bowman will graduate from Princeton University with a bachelor’s degree in economics.

WINGS from page 5 to the hospital to see how they were doing. Some were paralyzed or didn’t have an arm. When they did get hurt, you saw how it affected them.” Bailey decided he would teach disabled vets to fly. He calls his project “Broken Wing.” “If they are physically and mentally able, we can teach them how to fly,” he said. “It doesn’t mean they have to be perfect. Even if they’re paraplegic, (we can teach them) as long as they’re able to comprehend. Some of the brain-injured can’t. That’s a reality, that we can’t help everybody.” Bailey bought airplanes that are equipped with handicapped controls. He can even accommodate quadriplegics. All the vet or a family member has to do is fill out an application that is located on the company’s website. If they have a valid driver’s license, they can by pass a physical. No doctor’s permission is necessary, either. “We can tell when they’re here,” he said. “We talk to them and their families. We put them in a simulator and we have a pretty good idea. We judge on a caseby-case basis. We have the full capability if they think they can do it. We’ll give anyone a shot that wants to give it a try. If they want to fly, we’ll give them every opportunity.” The path to flying takes two to three weeks. It’s an accelerated course where students fly in the morning, attend ground school and fly again at night. During the day they can study or visit some of the area attractions, including the UDT-SEAL Museum and local beaches. Veterans and their families do not pay for the training, which costs approximately $5,000, and includes accommodations, if necessary, insurance, gasoline and other expenses. Bailey has made arrangements with a local Holiday Inn for reduced rate accommodations for those from outside the area. While the goal of the program is a pilot’s license, there is another reason Bailey is offering these lessons.

YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • ST. LUCIE WEST/TRADITION • JULY 5, 2013 • 19 While the goal of the program is a pilot’s license, there is another reason Bailey is offering these lessons.“I hope to give them confidence,” he said. “(They can say,) ‘I have a license, maybe I can start a business or go to work for someone. They’ve had the attitude they were invincible. When they’re not anymore, they’re devastated. The goal is a sense of accomplishment.

When they’re not anymore, they’re devastated. The goal is a sense of accomplishment. “There was a mom whose son was sitting in bed, doing nothing. His eyes lit up when he saw a story about this. He asked his mom, ‘Do you think I can do this?’ She sent an email. It was the first time in weeks he was excited about something. We have an appointment to see him.” Bailey is looking for sponsors to adopt a vet, financial contributions, volunteers, and businesses and organizations to step up with accommodations and access to free fun activities, like fishing charters, that will make the stay here a little vacation. “We want them to visit different areas and places where they can go for free,” Bailey said. “It’s a mini-vacation with a pilot’s license as a benefit.” “We want them to have a sense of accomplishment to take forward in the rest of life,” Bailey said. “They’ll hold their heads higher and walk straighter. I hope their first flight is with a loved one up and down the beach.” For more information about the “Broken Wing” program, visit the website, www.renegadelightsport. com, send an email to doc@renegadelightsport.com or call (772) 468-7001.

Oxbow Eco-Center focuses on ‘Designer Adaptation’ this July FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The will to survive is inherent in all animals and each has developed its own ways to ensure the next generation will carry on the species. Learn about ‘Designer Adaptations’ of various animals from Florida’s raccoons to New Guinea’s birds of paradise at the Oxbow Eco-Center this July. Drop in Tuesday through Friday from noon – 5 p.m. and Saturday

from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. to check out the ‘adaptations’ exhibit and kids activity area. Programs planned for the month of July include: • Learn how the birds of New Guinea use their colors and beauty to adapt and survive at the Oxbow’s Brown Bag Lecture on Saturday, July 6 at noon. Deep in the heart of New Guinea live birds of unimaginable color and beauty. While their adaptations of colorful plumage and

unique features are impressive, the most spectacular adaptations they have acquired are behavioral. Bizarre courtship displays by the male birds show off their exquisite assets, as they dance, puff out, vibrate, hang upside down, stretch their wings, and even contort their bodies into completely different shapes in order to impress a nearby female. Join David Attenborough as he follows a team of young scientists in search for the mysterious birds

of paradise. No reservations are required for this free lunchtime lecture. • The Oxbow’s Swamp Tales returns on Thursday, July 11 from 3:45 - 4:15 p.m. This free storytime is appropriate for ages 3 - 6. Join Missy Kitty for a “novel” adventure as she reads an environmentally-themed story. Each month the story changes, but the fun and adventure never stops.

OXBOW from page 20 • Spirit of Nature Art Camp takes place July 15 – 19 from 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Campers ages 7 - 10 years old can catch the wave with this year’s underwater-themed art camp filled with creativity and fun. We will be exploring many different art and craft mediums in an effort to allow your child to improve their self-expression and gain confidence. Bring your own snacks. The cost is $95 per camper (includes all art supplies). Pre-registration is required: (772) 7855833 or oxbow@stlucieco.org. Space is limited. • Oxbow and the Natives program peaks into the survival skills of raccoons on Thursday, July 18 at 3:45 p.m. Raccoons are considered to be a pest by some people because of their adaptability in the urban environment. In fact, the raccoon has proven to be one of the most adaptive animals on earth. Learn about how these masked bandits have learned to live with people and thrived. This free program is designed for ages 5 and older. No reservations required. • “Spots, Stripes and Shapes” will be the theme of the Oxbow’s Treehouse Time on Friday, July 19, starting at 9:30 a.m. Some have spots, some have stripes and some just have funny shapes! Children and parents will learn about nature’s color patterns through some silly and fun songs with entertainer extraordinaire Miss Kathy. This is a free program appropriate for ages 3 - 5 with an adult. • Spirit of Nature Art Camp continues July 29 – Aug. 2 from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Campers ages 10 to 17 years old can catch the wave with this year’s underwater-themed art camp filled with creativity and fun. PORT ST. LUCIE — It’s summertime and the local jazz scene is hot. The Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society has a full slate of events, including the popular Tuesday Jazz Jams at the Sunrise Theatre’s Black Box, Wednesday Jazz Jams at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens and the Saturday Jazz Market in downtown Fort Pierce. The last event supports educational programs and local scholarships for high school seniors. The scholarship program is an important part of the Jazz Society’s mission. The group awards $1,000 each annually to young musicians who plan to continue music education at the college level. Applicants audition by performing at a Jazz Jam with the Jazz Ensemble. The Society encourages high school music students to come to the Jazz Jams and perform with the group to gain experience in performing with a professional

rhythm section. While most are in their high school jazz bands, this give another level of experience and serves as practice for those auditions. This year’s scholarship winners are Lauren Douglas, violin; Trevor Farriss, piano; Jeffrey Mier, Bass; Taylor Robin, drums; Cristina Olarte, voice; Matthew Fulcher, bass; Josiah Nalzaro, guitar; Padraic King, violin; and David Gonzales, guitar. For the second year, the Jazz Society has sponsored a summer camp, with two week-long sessions. The camp, run by professional musician and music educator Mark Green, teaches high school students music theory and educated listening and gives them the opportunity to jam with professional musicians and receive individual attention. Don Bestor is president of the Jazz Society. Now in his third term as president, the idea of summer Jazz Jams was his. “People really like coming to those,” he said. “We are going to have a special ‘Blues Night’ and an Irish Jiggedy Jam, probably in August. It will be 90 minutes of Irish music and then the regular jazz guys. “At the Jazz market, we had a student ensemble several weeks ago and it was very successful. They were the scholarship winners and we put out a tips jug. We were en-

couraged it was so successful and we’re doing it again on the second Saturday in July.” Bestor, himself a professional musician, said that everyone in the organization is a volunteer. “All the money we get, we throw back in to do what we do,” he said. “No musicians get paid. We pass the hat. It’s not a get-richquick scheme by any stretch of the imagination. That’s not what it’s about. It’s about keeping the music alive and promoting the music. People can bring instruments and play with. It gives them an opportunity to play with professional musicians.” The Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society presents Tuesday Jazz Jams at the Sunrise Theatre Black Box, 117 S. Second St., Fort Pierce, July 16 and 30, Aug. 13 and 27 and Sept. 10 and 24. Programs run from 7-10 p.m. There is a $5 cover charge. Wednesday Jazz Jams at the Gardens take place on July 10 and 24, Aug. 7 and 21 and Sept. 4 and 18 at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens, 2410 Westmoreland Blvd. There is a $3 cover charge. The Saturday Jazz Market takes place from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. in downtown Fort Pierce. Live Jazz at the Gazebo is suspended until October. A student ensemble will perform on July 13. For more information, call (772) 460-5299 or visit the website, www.jazzsociety.org.
