ST. LUCIE COUNTY — As approximately 41,000 students in the county’s 42 schools ready their new gear for the first day of class on Monday, they will be greeted by new faces and a few other changes to improve education. “The entire St. Lucie County School District family is eager to begin this new school year with a renewed spirit of moving our community forward,” Interim Superintendent Genelle Yost said in a press release. “We anticipate continuing the work of the district and the upward trend of student achievement, with a sharp focus on providing each child, every day, the tools and skills needed to be successful, lifelong learners.” A new chapter is beginning in Tradition

ST. LUCIE WEST — In the wake of the wettest start of the rainy season since the late 1960s, industry experts at the St. Lucie West Services District said they are always researching more effective ways to better manage stormwater in its already sufficient system. At its August meeting, the district’s board mulled the proposition of using a pump in one of Lake Forest’s two lakes for faster drainage during a major storm event. The pump could get rid of

TREASURE COAST — If the dumping of millions of gallons of dirty water a day from Lake Okeechobee into the Indian River Lagoon doesn’t stop soon, the coast’s economy and environment will eventually die. Thousands of protestors formed a human chain from Stuart to Jensen Beach last week to send that message to state and federal officials.

“I Know I can depend on Joe...” At 99 yrs old, not too many things on this body work like I wish they did. But some things are more important than others to me. My hands are important, as I still do crafts and make bags and hand decorate eggs for the residents of assisted living homes. But nothing is more important than my hearing, I have worn hearing aids for many years and have worked with Joe since 2004. I continue to come to Joe because I know I can depend on him. He takes care of me and I never feel like I’ve been taken. I cant say that about the other places I have been to before Joe. The reason for the toxic blooms is the freshwater discharges from Lake Okeechobee by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. “It’s a very concerning situation. We’ve had these blooms now six different times since 2004, every time we’ve had these big discharge events,” Perry said. “They’re not necessarily caused by the local runoff like rain and rainfall or septic tanks or other things that people have been bringing up. It’s caused primarily from Lake Okeechobee to here.”

“Come forth and talk to your congressmen,” protestor and Palm City resident Debbie Weber pleaded. “There’s got to be a better way and I know that we’re smart and can make it happen.” Weber’s husband, Terry, had a message of his own to state politicians. “Come out here and look at the people here. Look at the waters,” Terry Weber said. “See what you’re doing with the non-action and just step up and get it done. It’s time.”

Toxic algae

Elevated bacteria levels

Recent tests by the Department of Environmental Protection have confirmed that a type of bluegreen algae also known as cyanobacteria are present in the St. Lucie River in Martin County. The toxins are very harmful to the liver and should be avoided at all costs, said Mark Perry, executive director of the Florida Oceanographic Society. “If it’s ingested or if you have long-term exposure to it, you’re vulnerable to get that toxin transmitted to your body,” Perry said. Extended exposure to the algae can cause blood accumulation in the liver and death by hypovolemic shock for both people and animals, Perry said.

Bacteria levels are also elevated in Martin County. A health advisory has been issued by the Martin County Health Department at the Roosevelt Bridge, Sandsprit Park and the Stuart Sandbar. The problem has also spread north. The Florida Department of Health in St. Lucie County has urged residents to avoid contact with the North Fork of the St. Lucie River from River Park Marina at Prima Vista Boulevard south to Martin County. Testing revealed higher than normal levels of enteric bacteria. The four locations sampled were River Park Marina, Veterans Park, Kitching Cove and waters near

St. Lucie County Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky attended a rally at Stuart Beach protesting the releases of water from Lake Okeechobee into the Indian River Sunday, Aug. 11 at Stuart Beach. ‘As the chairman of the Tourist Development Council as well, it makes it difficult for me to urge visitors to come to our area when at the same time I can’t encourage them to use the waterways we are so well known for,’ Dzadovsky said. LAGOON from page 3 Harbour Ridge. Symptoms of exposure for those who ingest or come in contact with the water may include upset stomach, diarrhea, eye irritation and skin rashes, health department officials said in a news release. Although the freshwater plumes can extend six to eight miles offshore and south past Jupiter Island, Perry said beaches have been spared from contamination. “They seem to be satisfactory right now,” the Palm City resident said.

Economic impact

The economy will be severely impacted if the discharges don’t cease soon, officials said. “I’m not just being an alarmist, (but) we will kill this estuary, which is the most bio-diverse in North America,” Martin County Commissioner Sarah Heard said. “And with that goes our biggest economic engine.” The lagoon is an important commercial and recreational fishery and economic resource to Florida. The total estimated annual economic value of the lagoon is $4.5 billion. If the economic engine that is the Indian River Lagoon, dies, the health

and livelihood for thousands, perhaps millions throughout the state would be adversely affected. “Everybody in the community is now suffering quite a bit,” Perry said, referring to the boating and tackle industry, along with waterfront hotels and restaurants. Perry said oyster reefs that purify water are dying at a rapid rate. Last year, big discharges that lasted 60 to 70 days because of Tropical Storm Isaac caused a 40 percent mortality rate in oyster reefs. This year that number spiked, he said. “A week ago Friday, we did surveys that show about 60 to 70 (percent) mortality already,” said Perry, who added reef and sea grass can only tolerate approximately 28 days of freshwater discharges. St. Lucie County Commissioner Chris Dzadovsky, who attended the rally, said his arm became infected from the polluted water during an effort to restore oyster beds several weeks ago, leaving it permanently scarred. “Within two hours, my entire arm was one big fester,” Dzadovsky said. “I ended up with three different types of antibiotics to take it down.” The commissioner, who is looking at ways to reduce fer-

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com

tilizer runoff within the county, said the discharges aren’t just a shame, they’re illegal. “The pollution that is being pushed into our region is killing the rivers. It’s killing our ocean. It’s a bigger picture,” Dzadovsky said. “The Clean Water Act of 1972 is in place for a reason and we’ve been violating it ever since.” The Clean Water Act establishes the basic structure for regulating discharges of pollutants into the waters of the U.S. and regulates quality standards for surface waters. The act made it unlawful to discharge any pollutant from a point source into navigable waters, unless a permit was obtained.

Plan 6 as a fix and Big Sugar

The Plan 6 Flow Way Project requires acquisition of approximately 54,000 acres of land at a pre-arranged price of $7,400 an acre. It incorporates 11 percent of Big Sugar corporation land located just south of Lake Okeechobee. That segment is where Lake Okeechobee disconnects from the Everglades. “Water should go south primarily from Lake Okeechobee through very shallow filtration systems known as stormwa-

ter treatment areas, which are shallow marshes that mimic the Everglades,” Perry said. “As the water slowly flows through those marshes from the lake, it would uptake the nutrients, so by the time it got to the Everglades it will be clean water.” “Now is the time if any to make sure we get this plan in place.” This is the plan people need to passionately pitch to politicians, Perry said. “People need to start pushing it now. We’ve got the ear of the political leadership now,” Perry said. “Now it’s time to put the pressure on to say we’ve got to have some change.” “This can’t go on year after year and expect the estuary to bounce back and be resilient, because it’s less and less resilient as time goes by.” In order for Plan 6 to work, Big Sugar companies must be on board to help. “They’ve built their farms within that flood plain that used to be the flood going south from the river grass from Lake Okeechobee to the Everglades,” Perry said. “They need to come in and cooperate and try to help come up with a solution to reconnect the lake to the

A must-read for all high school students

A

s our children are getting ready to head back to school and once again be tempted by all that society has to offer a teenager today, I thought that offering them the opportunity to read about our personal tragedy might get some to stop and think before they do something that could prove to be life-changing. The following is the transcript of a speech my wife gave to a group of returning high school students this past weekend at the Indian River Charter High School as part of a program designed by Dr. Leslie Haatvedt. Dr. Haatvedt designs programs for students of all grades to help them with self-confidence, morals and core values. Make The Right Choice is a foundation started in the memory of our son, Austin Erlanger, and awards two scholarships a year to deserving students to help with their continuing education after graduation. Hello, my name is Elaine Erlanger. Unfortunately I am now a member of the worst club in the world to belong to. We had to bury our son. Until this most unfortunate experience, I had no idea how often parents had to bury or cremate a child. I have come to realize that it happens way too many times. Far, far too many times. No parent should ever have to experience the death of a child. I have also come to realize that most of the time, this death is a preventable accident. Some kid doing something that they know they shouldn’t be doing, but do-

ing it anyway. Some young adult not taking the consequences of their actions into consideration. What could happen, what might happen, what if that happens? I know, I was a teenager. I know the stupid things I did when I was young and invincible. I know I was lucky. I know some of my friends that were lucky, I also know of some that weren’t so lucky. What you need to know now and appreciate forever is that life is fragile, you are not invincible, and the odds are that someone in this room is not going to make it to see their 21st birthday. The only question is, who is it going to be? You? Your friend? Your neighbor? Austin Erlanger was our son. He was a fantastic son. His father and I could not have been more proud of him. He was smart, a straight-A student, though he didn’t always get straight As, he was an incredible athlete. He could ride anything with wheels, one wheel, two wheels, He could surf, dance, climb, took martial arts and boxing and he kicked butt in roller hockey. He could do anything he wanted to do. Yet he was a gentle guy. He would stand up for the kids who would get picked on, he would spend hours playing with the young children of our friends when nobody else would. He had friends of all shapes, sizes and colors. He just saw people’s souls; if they had a good soul, he liked them. Austin also had some of his father and my adventurous nature. His father used to do some really

From bridge diving to sky diving, from mountain climbing to drag racing. What you all need to come to grips with, is that today ... the consequences of your actions are a hell of a lot worse than when we were young. The margin of error is gone. There are so many more dangerous elements in the world today, that just one mistake could be your last. The thing about doing crazy stuff is that sometimes it seems really fun, really cool. We know that we really shouldn’t be doing this, but ... what the heck ... it sure will be fun ... That reminds me ... What’s the last thing you hear a teenager say, before they go to the hospital? ... “Hey, dude, watch this …” Seriously ... of all the horror stories I have heard by way of being in this “worst club in the world,” 90-95 percent of every freakin’ death was avoidable. IT NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED. Austin”s death NEVER should have happened. July 5, 2011, at 12:45 in the morning, Austin thought it would be cool to sneak out and go visit a friend down the street. He had a 2006 Honda 125 dirt bike. Wouldn’t that be cool, sneak out the motorcycle and zip on down to my friend’s house. What could go wrong? It’s just a few blocks down the road. A road that at this time of the night won’t have anyone else on it. I guarantee you that he knew

he shouldn’t have been doing that. I know, that he knew, that if he had come to us and ask for permission … ha ... even you guys know the answer to that question, so he knew... Yet… it was cool, seemed like fun, what could happen????? Let me tell you what happened ... at 2:45 in the morning, the only other car within miles and Austin’s motorcycle ... met. Met at an intersection less than a quarter mile from our home. A car going 73 miles per hour, according to police reports, smashed into our son as he crossed the intersection. He died instantly ... yeah …what could happen? That’s what happens .... you die. And then your family dies, not instantly but a little bit every freakin’ day for the rest of their natural lives. Austin didn’t mean for this to happen, we know that. He was far too kind a soul to ever want to hurt us or anyone. Austin just made one very bad decision. He knew it was wrong ... he never would know how wrong it was. But you ... you are here, alive and with the rest of your lives ahead of you. The best times of your lives are ahead of you. Don’t screw it up. Don’t screw up the lives of everyone who loves you. It is simply a matter of Making the Right Choice, every single

Production capacity exceeds 7 million tons of sugar per year with operations in Florida, California, Louisiana, New York, Maryland, Canada, Mexico, England and Portugal. Sugarcane grown by Cooperative members is harvested, transported and processed. It produces more than 350,000 tons of raw sugar annually, which once refined, is enough to serve the average annual demand of more than 9 million people, its site states.

It closed in June as part of the school district’s budget reduction strategies implemented to meet declining revenues, which totaled $11 million for the 2013-2014 school year. Renaissance Charter School at Tradition Principal Stacy Schmit is ecstatic to begin the new year. “I envision a place where we educate the whole student,” she said. Schmit hopes to create culturally aware and well-rounded students. She’s been in contact with various charitable organizations within the community about volunteer opportunities for her students, she said. The school, which is still taking student applications for grades one through six, has a maximum

enrollment of 845. The school will also offer competitive soccer, basketball and track. It will add two more grade levels in the next two years. St. Lucie West’s College Preparatory Academy of the Treasure Coast has ninth and 10th grades this year as opposed to just a ninth-grade class during its first year in operation last year. The charter high school will add an 11th grade next year and 12th grade the year after that. It has an enrollment of 250. The school’s principal Erika Rains attributes much of the school’s success to her hardworking staff and parents. “I believe the key to success was a combination of teacher dedication and parent involvement,” she said. The school this year joined the Florida High School Athletic Association. That means for the first time, it will offer competitive vol-

leyball and basketball. Last year, gymnastics was offered. The golf team will also be able to compete in tournaments if it chooses to, Rains said. St. Lucie West Up on Top adult volleyball team will offer coaching services for free. “Our community is always good to us,” Rains said. New electives will include ethics and law and speech and debate. Last year students published a 74-page book entitled “Tales of a Ninth Grade Spartan.” The book, which is available for purchase on Amazon and in Barnes & Noble book stores is a collection of stories, poems and essays written by its ninth-grade class. The book gives insight into teens’ thoughts on life and love. Rains said she’d like to make more of her students published authors this year. “It’s very awesome,” Rains said. “That was a big thing for us that we’d like to do again.” Susan Seal, new principal of St. Lucie West K-8, said she will strive to get the school back to an “A” rating. The school, which has an enrollment of 1,500, went from an “A” to a “B”-rated school after changes mid-year to the grading system. “The goal is to get back to our ‘A’ status,” Seal said. “We’re developing action plans for each of the targeted areas.” Tutoring will be available for students throughout the school year, Seal said. High schools will be zoned by zip code. Freshman and new students to the system from St. Lucie West (34986) and Tradition (34987) will attend St. Lucie West Centennial or Fort Pierce Central High School.

flood waters 20 hours faster than the lake’s existing gate. Right now, it takes roughly 37 hours using a gate to get water off the streets in a major storm event like last year’s Tropical Storm Isaac, which dumped close to 16 inches of rain on St. Lucie West. The storm later went on to become a Category 1 hurricane that ripped through Louisiana, causing more than $2 billion in damages. “That’s a huge difference in storm water terms,” Lawson said of the reduced drainage time. It’s fast and it’s also costly, Lawson added. One pump costs an estimated $1 million to $1.3 million and has the greatest benefit to the immediate area surrounding the lake it’s installed in. Before making an official presentation to the board, Lawson said he still has more research to do. “The results of the computer models indicate that the pump is more effective in moving a total amount of water over a period of time than the gates are, but the total benefit is somewhat limited in scope to that neighborhood,” said Lawson, who isn’t putting a timetable on when or if he’ll recommend the pump. “... We’re simply looking at different opportunities that we

have to improve the system to the extent that it can. I don’t have an exact timetable for that at this point.” Lake Forest was identified as an area that could use more drainage power in the event of serious rainfall. “There’s water in the streets following a major storm event for a period of time as there is in other neighborhoods within St. Lucie West and the city of Port St. Lucie for that matter, or other communities,” Lawson said. South Florida’s soggy July has been the wettest on record since 1968, according to the South Florida Water Management District. District meteorologists also reported the wettest April through July period on record since 1932. “South Florida is saturated, leaving very few places to move water as we work to keep the system prepared for the peak of hurricane season,” said Susan Sylvester, District water control operations bureau chief, in a news release dated Aug. 2. “Our continual challenge with heavy rainfall is balancing flood control for 7.7 million residents while protecting the region’s wildlife and natural system, including the Everglades.”

RAIN from page 13 District-wide, 10.36 inches of rain fell in July, which is 3.33 inches above average. South Florida’s 21-week rainy season usually begins around May 20 and ends Oct. 13. Historically, June is typically the wettest month, nixing the ages old saying “April showers bring May flowers.” The current system, which Lawson said is very effective, operates on 24 gates and has done remarkably well during the historic rainfall. “The system is operating probably better than the way it was permitted through all of the improvements that have been done to date through the board and the funding,” he said. The design for St. Lucie West’s stormwater system is a 25-year, three-day rainfall event which is approximately 11 inches. When subjected to this amount of rainfall over a three-day period, water in the lake rises out of the lake banks and can produce elevations that cover the streets and a large portion of the yards and green space in a neighborhood, according to documentation on the St. Lucie West Services District website.

No matter how intense or costly the project, little can be done to prevent flooding during major storms, Lawson said. “Nothing that we could do, short of raising the entire site plan a couple of feet, would help keep all the water off the street all the time,” Lawson said. “There’s just not enough storage below the street elevations to control that water.” The ultimate goal is to gather information on the system to present to the SFWMD, with the hope it will allow the St. Lucie West Services District to change operating conditions of its network of gates in anticipation of a large storm event. Significantly lowering lake elevations below control would be ideal, Lawson said. That alone would “instantaneously add storage and reduce the impact of major storm events,” he said. Board Chairman Harvey Cutler wondered aloud during the meeting. “I can’t help always wondering from the first shovel of dirt that was put into St. Lucie West, that we were fighting nature,” Cutler trailed off. Lawson’s response was simple and vast. “Every project is,” Lawson said

Mitch Kloorfain/chief Photographer Matt Levine trains Andrew Williamson, 17, of St. Lucie West during a workout to prepare for the 2013 Treasure Coast Classic Body Building, Figure and Bikini Contest Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center.

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

PORT ST. LUCIE — Two years ago, Andrew Williamson of St. Lucie West decided it was time to get in the gym to get in better shape. After years of sculpting his body, Williamson will be one of many participants competing in an annual competition that’s gaining steam. On Aug. 23, Williamson will be one of an estimated 50 contestants from throughout the state competing in the 2013 Treasure Coast Classic Bodybuilding, Figure and Bikini Contest at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center. The competition will be sanctioned by the National Physique Committee. For Williamson, a senior at Lincoln Park Academy, the opportunity to compete in an event like this is a first and can be attributed to the tutoring of

Civic Center fitness coordinator Matt Levine. “I was lifting at the Civic Center and I didn’t know what I was really doing,” Williamson said. “And then one day, Matt stopped me and asked to work with him so he could show (me) the ropes. I was always a little bit on the heavier side and always self-conscious. This has helped me feel a little better about myself. “But what keeps me going is the same way Matt helped me, I want to help somebody get in shape like I’ve gotten in shape.” Levine is a nationally ranked power lifter who is competing in the event while recuperating from a torn ACL. A veteran in this field, what impresses Levine about Williamson is his work ethic. “He has got the right attitude and works harder than anyone

FITNESS from page 17 I know,” Levine said. “In this industry, those are things that aren’t the easiest things to find. He’s humble, down-to-earth and it’s been a pleasure working with him.” Both Levine and Williamson will be competing in the Men’s Physique portion of the competition. While body building focuses on the contestants building bulk, Men’s and Women’s Physique as well as the Women’s Figure and Bikini portions of the event are more so graded on upper body, tone and personality. One of the many women competing in the event is Port St. Lucie resident Toni Karam. The beginning of Karam’s body building coincided with her choosing her college major. “I was majoring in musical theater,” Karam said. “Physique was really important in that industry as well and I never felt confident for auditions. So I know I needed to get in shape so that I had a better chance at the role I was going after. “That career kind of fell to the back burner and I realized I can be just as happy on this stage, while looking great in a bikini. It started as just a hobby, but I’ve lost 40 pounds and I hope to pursue this as a career.” For more information on the competition, please call (772) 204-7101 or email fnappi@cityofpsl.com.

Mitch Kloorfain/chief Photographer Toni Karam, Andrew Williamson, Melissa Wakefield, Cassidy Cintron and Matt Levine make up Team Complete Nutrition as they prepapre for the 2013 Treasure Coast Classic Body Building, Figure and Bikini Contest Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center.

Art league welcomes new artists and experts alike Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — You don’t have to live in Port St. Lucie to join the Port St. Lucie Art League. In fact, many members of art leagues throughout the Treasure Coast join other organizations to get a different perspective. Joan Menis, president of the Port St. Lucie group, belongs to several others, including Palm City Art Associates. “It’s not uncommon for artists to join three or four groups,” she said.

“The longer you’re into it, you get to know one another. It’s knowledge. You never stop learning. I constantly seek art teachers. You can never have enough technique. Every time I take a class, it’s not so much the painting, it’s seeing things in a new way, thinking outside the box.” The Port St. Lucie Art League will begin its new season on Sept. 20. The group meets on the third Friday of the month from 1-4 p.m. at the Port Sr. Lucie Community Center on Airoso Blvd. and has

They’re open to the public and you don’t have to be a member. “We usually have refreshments and after the demonstrations, socializing and talking to other artists. We like to bring in our own work and set it up so people can see what we’re doing. There’s always work on display. We also have a Wall of Art at the Community Cen-

ter that’s strictly for members. Membership dues are $25 a year and everyone from beginners to accomplished artists is welcome. “We have beginners and people who had numerous exhibits,” Menis said. “We welcome everyone.” There is no charge to attend demonstrations and guests are welcome. Members are entitled to participate in shows and to display art in public buildings and plazas. In February, the group will have its own exhibit at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center. “We’ll probably do some small show where we hope top sell things,” she said. “We have done it at the Botanical Gardens. We also visit other clubs in the area. It enriches us. If anyone needs help with a problem with a painting, bring it in. We’re a very close-knit club.” Menis, originally from New Jersey, is a self-taught artist and has been painting for 20 years. She has exhibited her works and donated art for auctions to raise money for charities. She became president of the league two years ago after the retirement of long-time president Joe Holiday. “It’s experienced resurgence,” she said. “We’re trying to get new ideas. Artist Kelly Arnold comes frequently. She has done demos, and she teaches us to use computers to market our works.” Menis said that keeping up-to-date is very important to her art. “Your work gets stale,” she said.

PORT ST. LUCIE — For Jake Sanders, a hectic life is business as usual. He’s attending college full time, doing some freelance writing and graphic design to pay some bills, and teaching drama during the summer. The young impresario is also preparing his theatrical company, Curtain Call Productions, for its second season. He spoke recently about upcoming auditions and the selections for the new season. For 2013-2014, Sanders has selected musical theater, but not necessarily musical comedy. The shows are “The Rocky Horror Show,” “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” “Assassins,” and “Avenue Q.” “This year’s diverse shows really allow us to continue a legacy of daringly intelligent musical theater,” he said. “With shows like the cult classic ‘Rocky Horror,’ with shows like ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ and ‘Avenue Q’ and the darkly comic and poignant

‘Assassins,’ we’re hoping to widen our audience and introduce them to a whole new type of musical theater.” Auditions for all shows will take place by appointment on Aug. 24 from 12:30-4:30 p.m. at South Florida Dance Company, 529 Prima Vista Blvd., Port St. Lucie, Suite 309. Walk-ins will be seen as time permits. Callbacks will begin at 6 p.m. and continue as necessary through Aug. 25, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Prospective cast members should prepare two contrasting 32-bar contemporary musical theater songs and a one-minute monologue. They should bring three copies of their resumes and headshots and wear comfortable clothes for dancing, as it is required for “Rocky Horror” and “Putnam County.” The website for the company has a detailed breakdown of characters for each production and a list of songs actors should be familiar with for callbacks. Sanders’ goal is to build a com-

pany of performers from the Treasure Coast to perform and direct. “Doing shows like ‘Rocky’ allows us to draw from all over the Treasure Coast’s diverse talent pool, exploring our biggest shows yet,” he said. “We’re excited to begin this season by bringing new people into the ever-expanding Curtain Call family, joining the talented professionals I’ve been proud to call a part of my team.” Sanders noted that the company recently was granted nonprofit status and he has elected not to take a salary as artistic director until the company is financially independent. Performances will be in Martin County, but Sanders is still negotiating contracts for
