ST. LUCIE WEST — The dogs were barking, it was about 4:30 a.m. and Janice Prieto, a massage therapist at Fusion Aveda Salon & Spa in St. Lucie West, was half asleep, when the evening turned into pure horror. “I thought they were barking at the cat or something,” she said. “I let them in my room and they got on the bed, and they were growling a really low growl.” Half asleep or not, Prieto then knew someone was in her home. Instinct kicked in. The mother of two daughters immediately headed toward their bedroom. Along the way she saw a sliding-glass door open. She had a pretty good idea who was in her family’s home — Jacob Looney, her daughter’s 17-yearold ex-boyfriend. Prieto had just filed a protective order against him the day before. He’d been harassing Arielle, Prieto’s 15-yearold daughter. “He came up to her at school and had been harassing her, physically as well,” said Prieto. “He had been harassing her all summer and it got worse in the last few weeks.”

Armstrong was the first official customer to enter the store at 8:30 a.m. after her getting there two and a half hours earlier Sunday, Aug. 23. Additional images on pages A26 and A27.

‘Outsider candidates’ taking politics into their own hands Bruno Moore

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — With presidential candidate and real estate mogul Donald Trump’s recent antics, the outsider candidate (a political candidate with no political pedigree) has taken center stage on the national

scene. Media attention given to his recent comments on immigration, women and the state of the country in general has brought him considerable attention. The apparent “outsider candidate” trend seems to have a local impact as well. With the 2016 primary elections just a year away, political hopefuls with

little political experience might be adding to the ballot. Peppered among names like U.S. Senate hopeful Patrick Murphy and popular St. Lucie County Commissioner Chris Dzadofsky may be candidate for Commissioner Patrick Campion and congressional hopeful John Xuna.

Why Are All Hearing Aid Advertisements The Same?

Mailers Fake Discounts Ploys Gimmicks

Have you ever noticed that all hearing aid advertisements are essentially the same? Hearing aid advertisements are usually promoting:

1) Revolutionary new technology 2) Huge savings if you buy within a certain time slot.

One aspect of hearing aid advertisements that you rarely see is the credentials or experience of the person working with you. Most of the time that “little” detail is left out of the advertisement because he or she does not want you to know how little experience and training they really do have! Always start with knowing your hearing healthcare provider! Ask questions and make sure you are seeing a QUALIFIED & EXPERIENCED Hearing Aid Specialist... Dealing with hearing loss can be very difficult. Typically, people put off getting their hearing tested because they don’t want to know the results. Also, they are fearful of what the next steps could be. For example, everyone has a friend or family member that bought hearing aids that are now in a drawer. Don’t fall victim to this way of thinking! Do your research on providers, technology, pricing, warranty, experience, etc. before making a decision.

We are a family run business that has been serving the hearing needs of Treasure Coast Residents since STARKEY, the only 2003 by providing the very best in: American Owned and Operated Hearing Aid Manufacture

PORT ST. LUCIE — St. Lucie West resident Teri Pinney is excited about many things. She owns her own business, a grant and business proposal company, but her passion lies in helping people break the cycle of poverty in agricultural areas. She helped create the Rural Economic Advancement Program and works toward increasing adult literacy. Not being able to read, she has said, means that people can’t better themselves. Pinney also serves as executive director of the Florida Aquaculture Foundation and serves as its treasurer. That organization is working to support environmentally sustainable aquaculture farming that will protect marine life and avoid dirtying ecosystems that protect fish, birds and small mammals. The foundation works with students, farmers and groups who want to introduce sustainable practices into their businesses. The group is also developing student internships through colleges and universities that will emphasize hands-on science, technology, engineering and math experiences. Pinney, who has a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Tampa and an MBA from Chaminade University, spoke about her work with the foundation. “Aquaculture is the breeding, raising and harvesting of marine animals like fish and shrimp,” Pinney said. “There’s a worldwide focus on it. POLITICS from page A1 Campion says that’s exactly how it was intended. “It appears obvious to me that the founding fathers sought to arrange our democracy as being represented by citizen legislators, not career politicians. Based on individual state constitutions, it seems that most states desired the same thing.” Campion, who works in St. Lucie West, has run for County Commission before, and is active in the community. But he has never held office. He says getting elected is anything but easy. “The citizen legislator is a rare breed, the white whale of politics. Talked about but hardly ever seen. It takes a name and lots of money to get an office and hold it.” Former Tequesta commissioner Calvin Turnquest says outsider candidates are a good thing, as long as experience follows. “I think it’s good to have new blood running for office. The downside is the learning curve for those running for office. It tends to make people think there’s a ‘good-ole boy’ network that doesn’t want to challenge the status quo (but) if someone has been just collecting a check and not being engaged then get them out.” Turnquest says it took him more than 6 months to learn all the nuances of being a commissioner.

John Xuna, who is working on qualifying for the Congressional District 18 primary says he is running to change that status quo. “Insiders bring ‘politics as usual’, outsiders have the potential of being more honest, knowledgeable and effective. I’m running because of the lack of balance in international policy, lack of understanding of the fragility of the environment (and) social injustice.” Palm City resident and the force behind “Florida Not All Aboard” K.C. Ingram Traylor says anyone should be allowed to run for office as long as they’re involved. “If a candidate is not invested in his or her own community, how could one represent their constituents accurately? Anyone can run, but attaining public support is a completely different animal. The candidate needs to have the faith and the backing of the community and I believe that comes with being involved.” The problem, as Patrick Campion sees it, is that the game is all but rigged to favor incumbents. In an industry that relies on name recognition and fund raising, an outsider candidate running for office is admirable but not always viable. “Local citizens who have much to offer deserve an opportunity to work hard for the Treasure Coast. People have to believe that being unfamiliar with a candidate’s name, may just be a good thing.”

Peak of hurricane season arrives Jay Meisel

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — More than a decade ago when hurricanes Jeanne and Frances struck St. Lucie County in 2004, the Federal Emergency Management Agency provided a massive response. Every day following the hurricanes, large amounts of food and supplies were handed out to residents. But with the peak of hurricane season arriving, residents need to know that may no longer be the case if a storm hits the area this year, said Tom Daly, director of emergency management for St. Lucie County. “Residents need to have a seven-day supply to take care of themselves,” he said. Unless the hurricane is a major storm that causes catastrophic damage, Daly said, residents may not be able to depend on being

able to get a ready supply of food from FEMA, Daly said. It was realized last time that it didn’t really make sense for FEMA to respond in the way it did when people could go to grocery stores and get food and supplies, he said. FEMA is expecting communities to be more resilient, he said. But if a really major hurricane struck the area, he said, there would be the major response, he said. Besides having adequate food and supplies, Daly said, it’s important for residents to have a plan. For example, he said, they shouldn’t wait until the last minute to evacuate. This year, predictions are that fewer hurricanes will pop up because of El Nino, an atmospheric condition that results in warmer than normal waters in the Pacific. The flip side is typically fewer hurricanes and a wet winter for

Florida. So far, Hurricane Danny lost its steam but following close behind is Erika these are the first named storms for this season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warns people against getting “hurricane amnesia”, that stretch of time without a major storm that can unfortunately lead to being underprepared. Despite the seeming lack of hurricanes predicted for this year, experts at NOAA say a quiet season can sometimes produce the larger storms. NOAA points out that 1992 was a very quiet hurricane season. The first tropical storm didn’t form until Aug. 16. Its name was Andrew, and its 175 mph winds shredded Florida City and Homestead, Florida, then it crossed the Gulf of Mexico and tore into Louisiana. Andrew’s tab totaled more

Ms. Eovaldi has written numerous articles in local publications denouncing various policies and procedures in the Lake Charles Community. Previously the Board of Directors chose not to respond

to her allegations and erroneous statements. However, the tone of her most recent submission has compelled us to respond on behalf of the owners of the Lake Charles community. While we certainly are not a perfect community, we are a proud community that is dedicated to transparency and truthfulness. Ms. Eovaldi’s article contained

many comments and innuendos that are simply not true. We would like to address these issues point by point. Approximately 8 years ago Lake Charles was awarded a settlement of nearly $1 million for the Crosstown Parkway Project. Under the advice of counsel the previous Board of Directors designated those funds to be used for Capital improvements in the Lake Charles Community. It was determined by the current Board of Directors that the size of the clubhouse, which by fire code regulations, holds a maximum capacity of 88 persons, is insufficient to accommodate the community. Lake Charles has 1,128 homes with over 3,000 residents. When social functions are held at the clubhouse, many residents have to be turned away. Ms. Eovaldi’s further statements regarding the building of a 5-office suite for the Board of Directors is completely false. The only offices being built are for the property manager and assistant manager to provide a private setting for residents to address their issues in a confidential manner. This setting does not exist in the current office configuration.

In regards to Ms. Eovaldi’s comments on the close proximity of the Board members’ homes to each other, to the best of our knowledge, there is no Florida statute which restricts or addresses this issue. Ms. Eovaldi’s figure of letting $100,000 for clubhouse design plans is another example of an inaccurate statement. The cost is much less than she states. Ms. Eovaldi refers to a survey conducted on the community website which was against the proposed construction. This was not a true representation of community sentiment. The board discovered that the vote had been manipulated and that one IP address was used repeatedly to vote negatively on the issue, thereby tainting the polling results. She also suggested that the board spent $600,000 on a “spy radar gun”. This allegation ispreposterous. The community does own a radar speed device in an attempt to control excessive speeding and protect the safety of our residents. As a matter of fact, other HOA communities in St. Lucie West have heard of the success of our speed control pro-

Jones is a resident of St Lucie County, a former executive level banker and a former federal regulatory official. He is also certified as an Adjunct Instructor in the School of Business at Indian River State College. Jones succeeds Jim McKenzie, who passed away in late 2014. His appointment was approved by the Board of Directors of the Foundation following an extensive search. E. Wayne Gent, the newly appointed Superintendent of the St Lucie School Board stated, “I am pleased that Mr. Jones will be joining the Education Foundation. He brings extensive knowledge in both the business and civic communities in St Lucie County and I look forward to working closely with him and the Foundation to help broaden educational opportunities for all public school students.” Carissa Zerga, Vice President of Seacoast Bank and the current

President of the Education Foundation said that “Mr. Jones is very familiar with St Lucie County and has been active in community affairs for over 10 years. Mr. Jones will be a key participant in developing and executing our future programs and in enhancing relationships with the private sector.” Jones is a past board member of the Education Foundation, as well as, a past Chair of the St Lucie County Economic Development Council. “I knew Jim McKenzie as a friend and civic leader,” said Jones. “His passing was a shock to all of us, but I will work hard to enhance his significant contribution to the Foundation. The Education Foundation augments the activities of the School Board by encouraging creativity in our public schools. We provide scholarships to students and grants to teachers and schools. My goal is to significantly increase our outreach efforts and to broaden our activities to impact more students every year. Photo courtesy of Janice Prieto Arielle, left, and Amanda Prieto recently survived a knife attack at their Fort Pierce home. Their mother, Janice, fought the attacker, 17-year-old Jacob Looney, Arielle’s former boyfriend. Looney stabbed Arielle in the chest, puncturing a lung and nicking her heart. Janice got the knife from the attacker as Amanda called 911. Janice — whose hand was injured in the struggle — works as a massage therapist at Fusion Aveda Salon & Spa, 266 N.W. Peacock Blvd., St. Lucie West. Fusion is raising money for the family with a donation tree. Visitors can donate money to put leaves, hearts and hands on the tree.

ATTACK from page A1 Prieto explained that she had heard noises coming from her girls’ bedroom. “I was horrified, said Prieto.” Looney was armed with a knife and the attack seemed planned, since Looney had already cut her car tires and had been seen repeatedly by neighbors lurking near the home on different occasions. The youth dated Arielle for a few months and Arielle called off the relationship in May. Her mom alluded she was never comfortable with him. He seemed insecure, jealous and controlling.

Looney attacked Arielle that morning in her bedroom, where she and Amanda, her sister slept. He stabbed the teen in the stomach multiple times and once in the heart. She managed to kick him off of her. “Amanda, who is only 12, was actually the one who called 911,” said Prieto. “She barricaded the door by keeping her foot on the door and her other foot on the edge of the bed, while holding the lock. She also continued to speak to her injured sister the whole time so she would not fall asleep.” On the other side of that door,

Overall, Daly said, he believes St. Lucie County officials learned a lot from the hurricanes of a decade ago. “I think we’re smarter as to how we’re going to respond,” he said. Another advantage is having the Havert Fenn Center to house people with special medical needs and a new emergency command center. Both facilities were constructed to withstand significant hurricanes, Daly said. When it appears a hurricane might strike the area, heads of St. Lucie meet. They work on coordinating a response and preparing to open shelters, if needed. They also talk with officials from adjoining counties, Daly said. All 43 St. Lucie County schools are available as shelters, Daly said. For residents, the American Red Cross suggests that people have at minimum a three-day supply of water or one gallon per person per day and a three-day supply of

non-perishable foods. Other recommended supplies include a flash light, a battery-powered or hand-cranked radio, extra batteries, a first aid kit and medical items including a hearing aid with extra batteries and a multi-purpose tool. The Red Cross also says that people should stock up on baby supplies, pet supplies, have extra keys, extra clothing and make copies of personal documents. Before the hurricane, people should bring in the house items that can be picked by the wind, set the refrigerator to the coldest setting to possible to preserve food longer, fill car gas tanks and turn off propane tanks. Small appliances should also be unplugged. After a hurricane, the Red Cross recommends, people need to be wary of flooded roads, stay away from loose or dangling power lines and use flashlights instead of candles in the dark. They should stay out of any building with water around it, throw away spoiled food and continue to listen to radio forecasts for further information regarding hurricanes.

from Asia or South America,” Pinney said. “The American consumer is becoming more aware of the health standards of things raised in the United States. At the facility in Fellsmere, all of the machinery, equipment and supplies are made in America. The workers are residents of the Treasure Coast.” Pinney said that the closed system developed by Tzachi Samocha, a scientist at Texas A&M, is bio-secure. “Pollution happens when you spill things on the ground. In a closed system, there are no animals, no pollution that filters into aquifers, rivers or lagoons.” The system treats the water within the system, eliminating biowaste, and protects the system from pollution, eliminating the need for antibiotics or chemicals. Pinney said that Morris started the Florida Aquaculture Foundation to give back to the community. “We want to promote aquaculture as something young people look into as a career choice as the industry grows on the Treasure Coast,” she said. “We need trained individuals who know about raising shrimp. Through the foundation, we have internships and mentoring programs.” While aquaculture is one way to create jobs, Pinney’s work at the

foundation also focuses on making people job-ready. “Poverty comes from adult illiteracy,” she said. “The foundation gives back by helping individuals with reading through the Literacy Council of Indian River County. We also help them learn English.” Members of the foundation make presentations about their programs at schools and work with Indian River State College, Florida Institute of Technology and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University. “We want to hold workshops about aquaculture,” Pinney said. “We want to work with IRSC for certifications. It’s a good economic stimulus. We’re trying to combat poor shrimp farming with aquaculture. It’s the way of the future to feed communities. We have a worldwide focus.” One of the goals is to create an aquaculture academy with many of the area educational institutions. “It would be an international hub for learning aquaculture,” Pinney said. It would be for middle, high school and college students and for professionals in the field. We would be attracting scientists to give training in the newest methods to take back home.” The foundation has an antiques and resale shop, Blue Cypress

ATTACK from page A10 Prieto was in a battle against Looney. “He stabbed me in the throat from behind,” she said. Despite several wounds, Prieto disarmed Looney, but he kept up the attack. In all, Prieto had six stabs and slashes. Looney broke off his attack, and unsuccessfully rushed against the girls. There’s no telling why he broke off the attack. Perhaps Looney heard sirens. Perhaps he realized he was outmatched. Perhaps he was too sore from his injuries to continue. Prieto said she repeatedly targeted sensitive areas of the body for strikes and grips. She was ready to do it again. “He messed with the wrong Momma,” Prieto said. Looney fled, but police later arrested him. At press time, prosecutors are considering charging him as an adult. Prieto was rushed to one hospital. Ariella was rushed to another. “It’s pretty horrifying not to be with your child when she’s getting major surgery,” Prieto said. Despite her serious injuries, doctors expect Ariella to recover physically. Prieto, too, will physically recover. However, among her injuries is a deep hand cut, leaving Prieto unable to work. “I’m not sure when I’ll be able to work again, because of my hand,”

Prieto said. Preito said she’s haunted by a lot of second guessing about the night Looney attacked. She could have listened to the dogs sooner. She could have called 911 immediately. She could have armed herself against him with a gun, but could she have ever safely shot without endangering her girls? In hindsight she’s grateful — it could have been worse. “I’m big in martial arts,” Preito said. “I think it’s important, for young girls especially. My girls, thank God, have learned self-defense, which is why I think they didn’t panic.” She urges all parents to get their children trained in self-defense. Fusion Avedo Salon & Spa is taking donations for the Prieto family throughout the month of September. Visitors can purchase leaves, hearts and hands to go on a donation tree. Leaves are $1 to $10 donations. Hearts $11 to $20. Hands, in honor of Janice’s profession, are for donations exceeding $20. Donors can write messages to the family on the leaves, hearts and hands. The people at Fusion are also opening a donation page for the family at www. gofundme.org. Fusion is at 266 N.W. Peacock Blvd., Port St. Lucie. Arielle Prieto, at press time, was just being taken to another surgery, due to fluid on her lungs.

LIBRARY from page A8 regular meeting. She discussed Rosser Boulevard among other items. Jacob told the commission that about 60 percent of the county’s residents — 172,000 of 287,000 — have library cards. The county spends about $11 per resident on its library services, which is down from $19.19 in 2008. “The Internet has not superseded the need for libraries,” Jacob told the commission. “Now there’s so much information out that that the role of the library professional is to help you navigate through all that information and get you what you need.” The county has one of the lower per resident library budgets in the state. Some library systems spend $40 or more per resident a year. Others around $5. Commission members expressed interest in increasing the library budget in coming years. “When I think about the library system — it’s something we should invest in,” Commissioner Kim Johnson said at the meeting. Jacob said in an interview that while St. Lucie’s library spending seems low, the commission has been a strong ally through a difficult financial era. “This county has a strong history of supporting their libraries,” she said. “We came through a rough time here.”

St. Lucie County was hit hard in the Great Recession, and recovered more slowly than others, such as Martin County. In 2014 library patrons checked items out almost 795,000 times. The system has around 300,000 books and DVDs among its five branches and one co-operated with Indian River State College at the Pruitt Campus, 500 N.W. California Blvd., St. Lucie West. Additionally, the libraries have subscriptions to 68 databases, such as NewsBank and Ancestory.com, patrons use. A rapidly expanding service is digital materials, such as e-books and audio e-books. In the last fiscal year, patrons checked out almost 69,000. So far this fiscal year, which started last October, patrons have checked out 83,600. Libraries have also become a place for children’s activities. Last year about 16,000 attended the 600 children’s programs in the system, such as the regularly-scheduled Toddler Story Jam at the Port St. Lucie Library, 180 S.W. Prima Vista Blvd. Another popular service at the county’s libraries is Wi-Fi. This year about 40,000 visitors will use the free service. “People can afford devices, but not everybody can necessarily afford the bill monthly,” Jacob told the commission.

LIBRARY from page A18 The Rosser Boulevard Library will add a 200-person meeting room to the library system — its largest. It’ll be in an old city building, which Jacob said is saving the county a lot of money. “We’re not building from the ground up,” she said. “This is a City of Port St. Lucie Police substation. It worked out that it was in a perfect location for a library.” The county bought the 21,400-square-foot building for

Additionally, the county is getting about a $500,000 state grant, and another $250,000 from the Friends of the St. Lucie Libraries Association. Once opened, the library will cost about $650,000 to $750,000 a year to operate.

er. In conclusion, we believe that these allegations by Ms. Eovaldi are false and distort the truth. We further believe that Ms. Eovaldi neglected to verify the accuracy of her statements and reliability of her suggested sources. Her article tarnishes the good reputation of the Lake Charles community and the hard work done by the board to maintain a highly desirable place to live. We are extremely disappointed that this newspaper would publish a letter from anyone which affects the reputation of a community without verifying the content of the information being published.

Or as she puts it, she helps customers achieve their own design. “Customers get to come in, sit down, and make their very own ring. The one they’ve always dreamed of or wanted,” Larissa said. As customers describe in intricate detail what he or she is looking for in a piece of jewelry, Larissa stands at a computer and makes it appear before their eyes. A quick click of the “render” button and an image of a hand appears inside the very realistic ring the customer dreamed up right at the counter. JEWELER from page A22 help guide their valued customers through the process. “You definitely walk out of here with an education,” Larissa said. A woman may come in hoping for white gold and learn green gold compliments her gem the best. Or a man may come in seeking a large diamond ring before deciding clarity is more important to him than size. Whatever the situation, LSO Jewelers is sure to lay out all the options, Larissa said. Laying out the options does not always benefit Stan’s business in the short term, especially when it

comes to buying gold. One couple entered the shop prepared to sell an old gold watch, but Stan suggested they look at prices on eBay before making a decision. Fairness always trumps business, Larissa said. If a person comes in down on their luck, ready to sell a piece with obvious sentimental value, they always have the option to buy it back. Stan’s fair and transparent business practices carry-over to every aspect of his shop. When a person inquires about a piece of jewelry, one of the first questions the associate will ask is “What is your

budget?” Larissa said. “We work within their price range,” Larissa added. “We do everything in our power to find the best stone for their budget.” When a person uses the computer program to design a new piece of jewelry, they see an immediate estimate pop up on the screen. “There’s no room for hidden fees,” Larissa said. And then LSO Jewelers goes one step further, they let the customer be a part of the actual inception of their very own piece. Customers can opt to get a book that shows the “birth of the ring,” with photos showing each stage of the process. When the setting

arrives at the store, LSO contacts the customer so they are present when Stan sets the stone. “Dealing with the people” Stan said is his favorite part. “Watching people’s reaction when they pick up the final piece,” Stan said, is the thing that keeps him passionate about the work he does every single day. LSO Jewelers & Repair is located at 906 SW St. Lucie West Blvd., in Port St. Lucie. The shop is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Peripheral Neuropathy WARNING! The treatment that is provided at The Neuropathy Relief Center has three main goals:

As you can see in Figure 1: When these very small blood vesFigure 1, as the blood sels become diseased they begin to shrivel up vessels that surround the and the nerves begin to degenerate nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not receive the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms. The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Neurontin, and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects. The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here in Port St Lucie that offers you new hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects.

In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined.

1

What is the underlying cause?

2

How much nerve damage has been sustained?

3

How much treatment will your condition require?

Don’t Hesitate to Act Now! Peripheral Neuropathy is a progressive condition and once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is likely nothing we can do for you.

Dr. John Silva D.C. The Neuropathy Relief Center

1

Increase blood flow

2

Stimulate small fiber nerves

3

Decrease brain-based pain

The treatment to increase blood flow utilizes a specialized low-level light therapy (not to be confused with laser therapy) using light emitting diode technology. This technology was originally developed by NASA to assist in increasing blood flow. The low level light therapy is like watering a tree. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a tree and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper.

Figure 2

Figure 2: The blood vessels will grow back around the nerves much like a tree’s roots grow when watered.

The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage there is hope! Dr. John Silva D.C. at The Neuropathy Relief Center will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing, and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy.

451 SW Bethany Drive, Suite 200 Port St. Lucie (In The Medical Imaging Building)

Dr Silva will be offering this neuropathy severity examination to the first 12 callers. Call 772.429.8800 to make an appointment with Dr. Silva to determine if your peripheral neuropathy can be treated.

21018

Peripheral Neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which will cause the nerves to begin to slowly degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow.

HWY55 from page B1 less than 30 minutes the dinner is free. Our server, Harley Wahl (yes her name is really Harley, like the motorcycle!), is 17years-old and a senior at Treasure Coast High School. She loves working at Hwy 55 because she loves the people that come in and the interaction they have. “I love working here because the people enjoy the atmosphere and enjoy talking to us.” Wahl does admit that it’s better for her to go to work with a full stomach. “When you open the bun steamer, all you smell are hot, buttery buns. It always makes me hungry!” Wahl recommends her own personal favorite recipe for a shake to enjoy with our meal. The shake, which consists of brownie bites and hot caramel sauce in a vanilla custard

base, is adorned with whipped cream and a cherry. This is simply a little heaven in liquid form. As I sip my shake through the straw, I manage to suck up little chunks of brownie from the bottom of my glass. Yum!! The John Boy & Billy BBQ Bacon Burger was a finger licking delight, with the tangy John Boy and Billy’s grillin barbeque sauce, juicy bacon, American cheese and a crispy onion ring to top it all off. This burger’s sauce had a nice zing to it that gave it just enough bite to make it exciting but not overly spicy. The freshly brewed iced tea is tasty, crisp and just the right amount of sweet. Harley states that they make approximately two 5 gallon batches of freshly brewed tea per shift.

HWY55 from page B2 A local regular, Charles Perl of Tradition, says he has been coming to the restaurant almost every week since it has been open. He comes in on Thursdays, when the Weekly Cruiz-in festivities are happening. His first car was a 57’ Chevy convertible, so he loves to come by to see the classic cars. His favorite is the Andy burger. “It’s nice to come in and have a hot hamburger fresh off the grill and the fries here are amazing!” Perl states. The “Original Special” is the signature combo of the Andy’s Cheeseburger with fries, and a soda. This is considered a daily special. The burger is good quality, delicious, tender meat with a mixture of special spices. The Andy Burger was named after the son of the original franchise creator, Kenney Moore of North Carolina. My two personal favorites were the cheesesteak, which was a party in my mouth consisting of tender sliced steak with a lovely balance of green peppers, sautéed mushrooms, and onions smothered in provolone cheese. This coupled with the french fries with a side of delicious hot gravy for dipping was truly the highlight of what my taste buds experienced this evening! Owners, Joe and Lori Scheibelhut, moved down from North Carolina to the Treasure Coast area 3 years ago to open their first restaurant. Their first location was opened at the Treasure Coast Square Mall in December of 2012, the same exact month that Hwy 55 started franchising here in Florida. “Everything just fell into place.” Joe explains. The couple recently just opened their Port St. Lucie location on April 17. The Scheibelhut’s also share Moore’s phi-

FORT PIERCE – You just have to look at the face. Comic Sheba Mason holds a microphone and you see the face of her father, comedian Jackie Mason. The fact that the two have only met a handful of times doesn’t change the fact that by appearance and career choice, she is her father’s daughter. Sheba Mason will perform at the Comedy Corner, Sunrise Theatre’s Black Box Oct. 10. The original show set for early September had to be postponed, but you’ll want to note the new date on your calendar because she is one of the few women making a go of standup comedy. “It’s still very male-dominated,” Mason said in a phone interview from her home in New York. “Believe it or not, it’s a little bit better. Amy Schumer is the biggest comic, so that’s nice. When it comes to getting road gigs, a lot of places will say, if there’s an emcee, a middle act and a headliner, only one can be female. I’ve

COMIC from page B4 encountered it many, many times. It’s changed a lot as far as movies and television.” Mason has a show business background. Her mother, Ginger Reiter is a playwright. “I got my start as a stage prop for my mother when I was 2,” Mason said. “I began in the condo circuit when I was 6. Frankie Man was a comedian and we did patter when I was a little girl. I also sang. I was a cute kid and we did it every Saturday night. He paid me $10. That was the beginning.” The comic is now 29, but she held on to that first gig for 10 years, until she moved to New York City. “I was waitressing at The Comedy Club and took the manager’s class. I fell in love with comedy. You’re there alone and your personality shines through. I’ve been told I’m like a Jewish Mae West. I’m a little bit of a throwback. I talk about my grandma, being raised by a single mother, politics, dating. I’m more like Joan Rivers. I’m not vulgar the way a lot of comics are.” Mason is also appearing off-Broadway in “Both Sides of a Famous Love Affair: The Jackie Mason Musical.” It will be performed in Fort Lauderdale in January.

“My mother is a playwright who was with Jackie Mason for 10 years,” Mason said. “She wrote about it. I play my mother and I’m dating the guy who plays my father.” Mason hasn’t had much contact with his daughter, whose paternity he insisted be proven with a blood test. He did take exception to one of her jokes, where she said she wished she had a better-looking comedian like Woody Allen or Rosie O’Donnell as her father. “The joke was quoted in the New York Post,” Mason said. It was one of the few times I saw him, in a diner. I told him, ‘It’s a joke.’ It’s quite the paradox. Comics are quite touchy.” For Mason, life, however messy, is meant to be mined for humor. There’s a lot to be said about a face. “My grandma used to say, ‘You’re not gorgeous, not beautiful, but you have a face.’” Now I know what to put on my Match. com profile. I want a guy who’s looking for a face.” Sheba Mason’s appearance at the Sunrise Theatre’s Black Box, 117 S. Second St., Fort Pierce, has been rescheduled for Oct. 10 at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $15. For a schedule of upcoming Comedy Corner shows, call the box office at (772)461-4775 visit the website at www.sunrisetheatre.com

TREASURE COAST — Vern Melvin, director for the 19th Judicial Circuit Guardian ad Litem Program names Shelley Koppel, staff writer for Your Voice News and Views, an Ambassador. The 19th Judicial Circuit Guardian ad Litem Program is a powerful voice for over 800 abused, abandoned, and neglected children in St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River, and Okeechobee counties. The program is appointed by the court to advocate for a child’s best interests. A Volunteer Child Advocate is assigned to a child to ensure their rights and needs are not overlooked. As a result a child will find a safe and permanent home faster than a child who does not have an advocate. Koppel is recognized for her exceptional support of the Guardian ad Litem Program. She has committed to lending her voice to children, who cannot speak for themselves, to tell their story to the community. There are 400 children who are currently on a waiting list for a caring adult to be their voice in the court system.

2015 LEGISLATIVE WRAP-UP

Thank you again for the opportunity to serve you! Gratefully,

Larry Lee, Jr.

Mary Alice Bennett legislative aide

STAFF

Tangie Jennings district aide

DISTRICT OFFICE 100 North US Highway 1 • Fort Pierce, FL 34950 Phone: (772) 595-1391 • Fax: (772) 595-1392

CAPITOL OFFICE 1401 The Capitol • 402 South Monroe Street Tallahassee, FL 32399-1300 • Phone: (850) 717-5084

Koppel has made it her personal mission to support efforts to ensure that every child is assigned a Volunteer Child Advocate. She recognizes that it is vital for every child who has been abused to have a sense of hope; a caring and consistent adult in their life. Anyone at least 21 years of age, who wants to make a difference in their community, is encouraged to become a Volunteer Child Advocate with the Guardian ad Litem Program. Volunteers are members of advocacy teams and are given support, training, and guidance by a team of professionals. Prior legal experience is not required. The time commitment is approximately 10 hours a month. This opportunity has flexibility and is perfect for retirees, fulltime or part-time employees, or someone looking for a new and enriching experience. Koppel said that she is honored to serve as a Guardian ad Litem Ambassador. “I have always admired the GAL program and its staff and volunteers,” she said. “The program protects the most vulnerable among us, children who do not

have a voice. They may travel to different foster homes, with little continuity in their lives, but their GAL advocate is there to make sure that they are heard Shelley Koppel when decisions about their future are made. The program puts someone in their corner, something too many children have not had. You don’t have to have legal experience. You just have to want to make a difference in a child’s life.” For information on how you can also declare “I am for the child” please call the Guardian ad Litem Office (772)785-5804 or visit www.guardianadlitem.org. Every Wednesday there is an information session at the Guardian ad Litem Office, 10am – 11am and 5:30 – 6:30 pm, 584 NW University Blvd, suite 600, Port St. Lucie, 34986 (across from Tradition Field).

Preschool Literacy After three years of hard work I am proud that the Literacy Jump Start Pilot Project, unanimously passed by both the House and Senate, was officially signed into law by the Governor. I am also grateful that this critically needed program, now funded with $200,000, will help thousands of children in our community get a “jump start” on early reading skills, and hopefully serve as a model for other communities in our state. Education Funding As your State Representative, I believe that education is one of the best investments our state can make to create jobs, prevent crime, and improve the quality of life for everyone. This year’s budget raises the per-student funding for Florida public schools by 4 percent. It is my hope that this funding will bring more educational opportunity to our young people locally in St. Lucie County and across Florida. New Horizon Mental Health Clinic During this legislative session, the New Horizons’ Transitional Group Home (THG) received $576,666 in additional funding. This THG engages individuals from long-term stays in DCF state hospitals that present with severe and persistent mental illness with intensive staff supervision, support, and assistance. Beach Renourishment Thanks to a regional effort by our entire St. Lucie County delegation, we were able to secure $239,000 for Fort Pierce Shore Protection to help rebuild and restore our beaches. This funding will help to protect our beaches; thus, preserving this important part of our economy while ensuring our quality of life for years to come. Veterans’ Nursing Home This year, thanks to a collaborative effort by our local and state officials, St. Lucie County was able to fund the Veterans Nursing Home that was announced last year. This year the budget included, and the Governor approved, $2 million dollars to support this new facility. SEAL Museum This session our entire St. Lucie County delegation worked hard to expand our Navy SEAL Museum. With strong bipartisan support from Democrats and Republicans in both the House and Senate, we were confident that the Governor would support this project as well. Unfortunately, the Navy SEAL museum did not escape the veto pen. We will be back next year to continue working on this worthy project. 20989
