ST. LUCIE WEST — Harvey Cutler, Chairman of the St. Lucie West Services District board of supervisors, wants to give the utility’s about 55 employees $10,000. Under his plan, Dennis Pickle, the manager and utilities director, would get $5,000 and the other $5,000 would be somehow split to some or all of the others. “It’s not as simple as I thought,” he said that the board’s regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 1.

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The usual summer employment slowdown didn’t show up from May to June, but arrived nonetheless. The Florida Department of Eco-
nomic Opportunity released its July employment report Aug. 21. Unemployment crept up from 6.4 percent in June to 6.9 percent in July. The state’s monthly numbers for counties are not seasonally adjusted. St. Lucie’s unemployment rate decreased slightly from May to June, from 6.5 to 6.4 percent.
The summer slowdown is offset by more employers moving into St. Lucie West. CareerSource Research Coast helped HomeGoods find workers for its new location, 1351 N.W. St. Lucie West Blvd. “We had 500 people come through our doors to apply,” Natasha Serra, community and public relations manager at Ca-
reerSource, said. “They hired, I think, 75.” Additionally, Barnabas Christian Academy — kindergarten to eighth grade — is moving into St. Lucie West as it expands enrollment from 115 last school year. At press time, the school had 170
