ST. LUCIE WEST — Harvey Cutler, Chairman of the St. Lucie West Services District board of supervisors, wants to give the utility’s about 55 employees $10,000. Under his plan, Dennis Pickle, the manager and utilities director, would get $5,000 and the other $5,000 would be somehow split to some or all of the others. “It’s not as simple as I thought,” he said that the board’s regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Employment takes usual summer dip Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The usual summer employment slowdown didn’t show up from May to June, but arrived nonetheless. The Florida Department of Eco-

nomic Opportunity released its July employment report Aug. 21. Unemployment crept up from 6.4 percent in June to 6.9 percent in July. The state’s monthly numbers for counties are not seasonally adjusted. St. Lucie’s unemployment rate decreased slightly from May to June, from 6.5 to 6.4 percent.

The summer slowdown is offset by more employers moving into St. Lucie West. CareerSource Research Coast helped HomeGoods find workers for its new location, 1351 N.W. St. Lucie West Blvd. “We had 500 people come through our doors to apply,” Natasha Serra, community and public relations manager at Ca-

reerSource, said. “They hired, I think, 75.” Additionally, Barnabas Christian Academy — kindergarten to eighth grade — is moving into St. Lucie West as it expands enrollment from 115 last school year. At press time, the school had 170

ST. LUCIE WEST — In 1981, Dorothy Brennan read a local news article about a non-English speaker who accidentally poisoned her own daughter because she could not read the instructions on a prescription medicine bottle. In response to the tragedy, Brennan launched into action and St. Lucie County’s “Learn to Read” organization was born. For 34 years, the organization has been matching tutors up with adults in the community who cannot read or write in English. Now, it also provides computer resources, weekly classes, and other language learning aids to students from all over the world. All of it is free. In 1998, Luz Ma Camacho arrived in Port St. Lucie from Colombia. She was college educated

and armed with an architecture degree. The biggest barrier between Camacho and her American dream was language. Brennan’s Learn to Read program became Camacho’s solution for breaking down that barrier. Now, living in St. Lucie West, Camacho heads the organization as executive director. “When I came here, I couldn’t speak English, and I quickly realized, I couldn’t stand anybody either. I was so frustrated,” Camacho said. “Learn to Read totally changed my life. It was like all of these windows and doors were shut, and they were slowly starting to open.” Camacho still remembers the first time she realized she was on her way to fluency. “It felt like a miracle,” Camacho said. Staff photo by Patrick McCallister Dennis Pickle, manager and utilities director of the St. Lucie West Services District, listens to discussion about a $5,000 bonus. At its regular meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 1, the Board of Supervisors discussed giving Pickle the bonus, and another $5,000 to the district’s other employees.

BONUS from page A1 The district is a Community Development District, which is a hybrid creation of the state legislature. The districts operate as governmental bodies to deliver

some municipal services, such as water and sewer. They’re subject to most laws governing local government, such as Florida’s Sunshine Law. That’s why giving out bonuses turned out to be “not as simple” as Cutler thought.

“There has to be a way to do it,” Cutler said. Board members agreed that Pickle and other employees deserve bonuses, although they differed on what to call or even how to rationalize them.

“I would consider this an award, not a bonus,” board member Vince D’Amico said. He wanted the one-time extra money tied to specific projects or accomplishments. Other board members were reluctant to do that. “I’m a little uncomfortable with D’Amico’s suggestion,” board member Gregg Nay said. “We’re recognizing excellence across the board.” Additionally, the district’s attorney, Daniel Harrell, warned that justifying bonuses based on completed projects could run afoul of Florida law. “It’s a little fuzzy,” he said. Nevertheless, Harrell said depending on how the board justifies and words bonuses, it likely can give them. Board members suggested giving Pickle the power to decide what other employees would get bonuses. “I appreciate the gesture,” Pickle said at the meeting. “It’s hard to single out one or 10 employees.” Pickle said no employees outshined others. “If an employee is still here, that means they’re a viable, valuable part of the team,” he said. The district hasn’t had to raise rates since 2010. At the same meeting they adopted a budget

OUR VIEW have your lunch outside in a park. Then came Sept. 11, 2001. My husband and I were living in Pittsburgh at the time and I was recovering from surgery. The television was always on and I was sort of watching CNN. Suddenly, what seemed at first like a small plane hit a tower. It had to be a terrible accident…until the second plane hit. It was just about rush hour in New York and I knew my college friend, Wendy, who worked in the Financial District, would be going to work. That area is very compact and where she worked would not be far from the towers. I spoke to her as she was going into a bank to find shelter. Recently, we talked again about that day and what she remembers about it. “I got out of the subway at Wall Street and the air was filled with dust,” she said. “Everyone was asking what was going on. There were entire pieces of paper floating down. I thought, ‘Is this a parade day? It’s like confetti but it’s a quarter to 9. It didn’t make sense.’” Wendy said that people started getting on their cell phones. At

Shelley Koppel that point, there was just dust but someone said that a plane had hit the World Trade Center, I was at Broadway and Wall, two short blocks to where the park is. People were saying they might as well see. The crowd walked up. When we looked up the buildings, there was smoke and flames. The buildings were on fire within minutes, and, as I’m standing there, there’s a huge explosion in what seems to be the same building. Concrete and rock came pouring out and flying at the crowd. We were a good block away, but debris was flying out of the buildings and I said I was way too close.”

Identifying intolerant idealism

T

he presidential election is fast approaching and we are now beginning to see a myriad of differences in ideology from each of the candidates’ political platforms. Each candidate for political office advocates a platform of ideas, an ideology representing their visions of American culture and the concepts of human life. Their platforms represent a view of their ideology and sociopolitical program for the future. They will make numerous public appearances, kiss babies, shake hands, debate and make speeches. We will be bombarded by countless campaign promises; some making good sense while others falling far and wide from the real issues we face. In some cases, many of the promises will be broken or forgotten, along with a flow of many deceptions and follies. Many of the ideas put forth will have little or no merit at all, while others will have little or no chance for attainment. Politicians will threaten and bribe for your vote and government agencies will continue to be lobbied while the community at large becomes more confused and distracted. A political contest will always bring to the surface far-reaching economic and social issues. Discussions will center around what matters to the voter and not necessarily what matters for the good of the community, since the objective is to win votes. The campaigns promulgate their thoughts and ideas which are amplified by the many political consultants and strategists and their hired guns. They are then magnified through the prisms and biases of the 24-hour cable networks and the mainstream media. As the polls shift and change, so does the political rhetoric, which will create further deceptions and misinformation. It is no wonder that there is confusion and misdirection resulting from these conflicting and high-jacked campaign messages. The campaign’s success is directly tied to the money it can raise, and most presidential campaigns will raise hundreds of millions. Donations are used to implement giant marketing and public relations campaigns but also to influence the candidate once elected to office. It is the voters who will ultimately determine the fate of our country. Unfortunately there are many who will vote for their candidate of choice ignorant of the world around them. They have no understanding of the issues and will choose the candidate for reasons only based on a political affiliation. They vote row A or B only because that is what they

“Because patient care should always come first”

Peter Perry have always done. Shame on them because while it is their right to vote for whomever they choose, it is also their responsibility to make an effort to become informed and to sift through the political rhetoric to learn the truth. Voting should not be viewed as a once-ayear right — it is a responsibility that should be assumed 365 days a year. No folly is more costly than the folly of ignorance and intolerant idealism. Simply stated, a folly is an imprudent and foolish act or idea that lacks common sense. It is an ideology that is contrary to the culture and history which made America great. It is obvious that some, not all of the candidate’s concepts and ideas are well off the mark and designed as deceptions only to win political office. Regardless of where you stand regarding the debate, our country is heading in a very bad direction. This is especially true for those of us in South Florida. Yet, there will be many voters who will support these follies and gladly and freely cast their vote in support of candidates rather than consider the bad outcomes created by their policies. Photo collage submitted by Bob Checco Bob Checco captured an image of his two sons, Bobby and Jimmy when the World Trade Center was in its earliest stages of being built in 1969.

First hand account of 9/11 FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Decades before Sept. 11, 2001, retired New York City firefighter Bob Checco photographed his two sons in front of the World Trade Center as it was being constructed in 1969. The photo captured a moment in time when no one would have believed more than 30 years later terrorists commandeering hijacked airplanes would topple the twin towers making up the center. Checco, who is now president of the Martin/St. Lucie Division of the organization for Florida Retirees of the New York City Fire Department, said that when the disaster struck one of those sons in the photo was a New York firefighter. At the time of the disaster, his son was off duty. He said his son, Jimmy Checco, rushed into the nearest fire station, picked up gear and headed to the scene. His other son, Bobby Checco, was working as a carpenter in New Jersey. A co-worker said something and when Bobby Checco “turned around, he saw the plane hit the second tower,” Bob Checco said. As the news of the terrorist attack unfolded, Checco said he watched television. He had no idea, he said, that what his family members were

doing or if they were injured. Ultimately, his son and his son-inlaw, also a firefighter, survived, and his son, Jimmy Checco was interviewed by ABC news. But the experience left some long-lasting emotional scars for those who responded. They dealt with a gruesome scene where they found body parts. His son, while sifting through the rubble, picked up a man’s face, Checco said. Although his family members involved in the response survived, many others that he knew didn’t live. “There were so many friends who got killed or their sons who got killed that day,” he said. But Checco said that saying they were killed isn’t strong enough of a statement. “They were murdered that day,” he said. Bob Checco served as a firefighter in from 1958 to 1985, when he retired. Robert Major of Stuart, who retired from the New York City Fire Department in 1987, still has strong feelings about the attack 14 years later. “I still remember it and I don’t like it and I see those people as our enemies,” he said. “I think people are starting to get soft on it and starting to forget. But I won’t.” Major was one of several retired firefighters from the Treasure Coast

TREASURE COAST — Rocla Concrete Tie, Inc., “Rocla”, the largest supplier of pre-stressed concrete ties to North America’s freight and transit railroads, has entered in to a long-term supply agreement with All Aboard Florida and Florida East Coast Railway (FECR). The new agreement will require the construction of a new facility in Ft. Pierce. The new plant will supply ties to FECR, the All Aboard Florida project, as well as other transit agencies and railroads throughout the Southeast United States. It will be located along the existing FECR mainline in Fort Pierce. This location was chosen because Fort Pierce is the midway point between the major urban hubs of Orlando to the north and Miami to the south, making it the ideal point to manufacture and deliver ties to all of Florida’s growing rail operations. Vice President of Business Development, Brett Urquhart, said, “Rocla is excited to be part of this unique partnership between FECR and All Aboard Florida. The immediate need for concrete ties by the All Aboard Florida passenger rail project helped justify this investment, which will allow us to be an ongoing supplier to any other capital projects of All Aboard Florida & FECR, as well as use the FECR network to reach other customers in the future.” He added, “Building a new plant in Fort Pierce not only allows us to bring better value products to our key customers, but it will bring 42 full-time, well-paying jobs as well as tax revenue to the city.” “Producing concrete crossties in Florida is nothing new for FECR,” said Senior Vice Engineering,

Mechanical and Purchasing, Fran Chinnici. “This new plant and our continued relationship with Rocla provides us with a very high quality product and restores the level of productivity and cost effectiveness we have been missing for several years.” Construction on the new facility in Ft. Pierce will begin immediately and the production of concrete ties will start in early 2016. About Rocla Concrete Tie, Inc. Rocla is the leading producer of pre-stressed concrete rail ties in the United States. Major customers for its products include Amtrak, Burlington Northern and Union Pacific, as well as other Class I railroads, light rail/transit projects, high-speed corridors and industrial/ports all around the country. Rocla began producing ties in the United States in 1987 and now has North American manufacturing plants in Pueblo, Colorado; Amarillo, Texas; Bear, Delaware; Portsmouth, Ohio, and San Jose Iturbide, Mexico. For more information on Rocla, please visit http://www. roclatie.com. Rocla Concrete Tie, Inc. is a portfolio company of Altus Capital Partners. About Florida East Coast Railway The Florida East Coast Railway (FECR) is a 351-mile freight rail system located along the east coast of Florida. It is the exclusive rail provider for Port Miami, Port Everglades, and Port of Palm Beach. FECR connects to the national railway system in Jacksonville, Florida, to move cargo originating or terminating there. AN EYE-OPENING PRESENTATION

BY FIER EYE CARE & SURGERY CENTER

Courtesy of the Library of Congress prints and photographs division Destroyed buildings and cars are just some of the remnants following the attack on the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.

“The Best in Sight”

EYEWITNESS from page A6 At first, Wendy thought all of the debris was from the one building. At the angle where she stood, she didn’t see the second plane. “When it started exploding, everyone turned to run. I was afraid that I would get trampled. There was a bank on the corner and I veered into the revolving door. I was afraid of the debris and afraid of getting trampled.” Once the crowd dispersed, Wendy made her way to her office. She never looked back toward the carnage. “I just thought, ‘Let me get to my office. I didn’t feel safe. I wanted to be with people I felt safe with. When I got to my office, I went to my desk. My sister in North Carolina called to ask if I were OK. She had been watching TV and had the details. My sister in North Carolina was giving us the details.” Wendy and her colleagues learned that the second building had been hit. She was talking with her boss when he asked if she felt the vibration. It was the building going down, even though it was ½ a mile away. “It was so dark and the amount of dust made it like nighttime,” she said. “You couldn’t see out the windows. They turned off the air

intake because of what was outside. I began to worry that if the air was so thick outside, how do you breathe?” Wendy’s daughter, Ellen, had graduated from college and not yet started working. She was at home and watching the events on television. “She thought everyone in lower Manhattan was going to suffocate,” Wendy said. “At some point, the cloud began to move and it began to lighten, like twilight. It was close to noon and we were told to evacuate. The air had cleared enough. My nephew, Danny, was working nearby and he called and said, ‘Let’s evacuate together.’” Her nephew took so much time to get to her that Wendy began to worry. He had become disoriented as to where things were from all the dust and debris. He did bring an extra shirt for her to put over her face. “We had to walk through the debris,” Wendy said. “It was like a construction site. We walked toward the Brooklyn Bridge. It was September, a warm day and I wore sandals. I said I would never be in the office again without sneakers. We walked over the bridge. There was a hospital and Danny said, ‘Let’s see if there’s anything we can

We need to be more like Meerkats, standing up and alert, than Ostriches, with our head in the sand, when it comes to the children in our community – Child Summit continues efforts to help protect children. As we prepare to host our 4th Annual Treasure Coast GFNF Child Summit, I am again; disturbed by the need for the topics that we will present to further help protect children. As a loving parent, or loving caretaker, it’s inconceivable that anyone would harm a child, but it happens daily in our own community and across the nation. Children are abused, neglected and trafficked in ways those of us from loving, caring families could never image. Rather than burying our heads in the sand, we, as a community, need to be forever vigilant and alert for those preying on our children. For this reason, GFNF continues to raise awareness with regard to current threats to the health and welfare of our children, and most importantly, to provide the community with the knowledge and tools that are needed to address these horrific issues. In order to continue its diligent efforts to help protect children, Guardians For New Futures (GFNF) will host the 4th annual Treasure Coast GFNF Child Summit on September 16th and 17th at the Treasure Coast Public Safety Training Complex at Indian River

State College’s main campus in Fort Pierce. The carefully selected topics of this year’s Child Summit will focus on Domestic Violence, Sex Crimes and Sexual Predators and will be presented by experts in their field: law enforcement, medical community, mental health, and addiction. Topics will include talking to children about their abuse; traumatic and post-traumatic stress disorder; current drug trends and the impact of substance abuse on adolescent identity development. In addition to the formal presentations, there will also be a panel composed of all four county Sheriff’s Offices, who will provide important information about current sex offenses, internet crimes and child pornography that occur within our community. Not only is the Summit an educational experience, it is also an upto-date training opportunity for professionals who work closely with children and others who have a vested interest in issues impacting our most valuable resource, children. It is hard to believe that these evil things occur in our community but the fact is they do and, unfortunately, the extent to which they occur is not well known. Below are some important statistics to con-

“My dad had Alzheimer’s disease for years, and Vivian and I took care of him in our home. A friend told me how Treasure Coast Hospice can help. They provided Dad’s medications, a wheelchair, a shower chair and oxygen. The RN and hospice aide showed us their love and patience as they helped us give Dad all the care he needed. We suggest calling Treasure Coast Hospice as early as possible.”

Having responded as a firefighter to many fires that left debris, Major said, “It wasn’t nothing we hadn’t done before.” Major said at least five firefighters he knew from the firehouse where he worked died. A priest he knew also died. John Carino, another New York City retired firefighter who lives in Port St. Lucie, recalled traveling up to the scene on the Friday following Sept. 11. “It was unbelievable,” he said of the scene. Carino said he saw a gigantic pile of bricks, concrete and steel beams. He said they filled buckets with

Government officials said that the situation was safe for those involved in the cleanup. “They said everything was good, but there have been too many people I knew who have come down with cancer and all kinds of stuff,” Carino said. He said one of his sons is on disability as a result of having damaged lungs. Checco said that his son, Jimmy, suffered back problems after a ceiling collapsed on him and also has breathing problems. “They all ended up with the World Trade Center cough,” Checco said. Carino said he knew firefighters who died and people whose sons died during the response. Among the people he knew who died in the tragedy was Donald Burns, an assistant fire chief. News accounts say that Burns was last seen setting up a command post in the second tower.

EYEWITNESS from page A18 do.’” The two got within a block of the hospital and saw the medical staff standing with stretchers, waiting for survivors. We thought, ‘They don’t need us.” Of course, they later learned that most of the stretchers remained empty as there were so few survivors. Wendy said she still didn’t feel safe. “We could hear planes,” she said. “I felt like we’re in the open. Danny said they were fighter planes, that they were ours, protecting us. He could tell by the sounds. You couldn’t see them, but you could

hear them.” When they crossed over the Brooklyn Bridge, people greeted them with chairs, cups of water and offers of a bathroom. “It was an outpouring,” she said. “They knew people had walked across the bridge. You never see this in New York City. It was heartwarming.” They stopped at the home of one of Danny’s friend, who worked in the World Trade Center but had stayed home that day. Many of his colleagues died, although they didn’t know the extent at that time. Wendy called home and said she was taking the subway home to Queens. The subways were free that day. Danny walked her to the

subway and waited until it left the station. When Wendy got off the train at Jackson Heights, where she lived, she realized she had not left the destruction behind. “Even in Jackson Heights, you could smell the smoke,” she said. “The wind blew this way. The smell was more chemical and acrid.” Wendy and her daughter returned to the area a week later to see how things were. She remembers all the flowers outside of firehouses and all the pictures of missing people on the lampposts. She returned to work two weeks later. “The chemical smell lasted for months,” she said. “I was nervous

on the subway for a long time afterward and Ellen would only ride in the first or last cars, where she could see out. “Apparently we were not the only ones who became more fearful, because they began making announcements on the subways whenever the trains stopped.” It’s now 14 years since that terrible day. I had never heard this story in its entirety. As I was writing, it was so hard for me not to stop and shake my head. Wendy was matter-of-fact. It was a horrible experience, but New Yorkers are tough. Wendy has a different job now, still in Manhattan. And yes, she keeps a pair of sneakers in the office.

Peripheral Neuropathy WARNING! The treatment that is provided at The Neuropathy Relief Center has three main goals:

As you can see in Figure 1: When these very small blood vesFigure 1, as the blood sels become diseased they begin to shrivel up vessels that surround the and the nerves begin to degenerate nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not receive the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms. The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Neurontin, and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects. The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here in Port St Lucie that offers you new hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects.

In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined.

1

What is the underlying cause?

2

How much nerve damage has been sustained?

3

How much treatment will your condition require?

Don’t Hesitate to Act Now! Peripheral Neuropathy is a progressive condition and once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is likely nothing we can do for you.

Dr. John Silva D.C. The Neuropathy Relief Center

1

Increase blood flow

2

Stimulate small fiber nerves

3

Decrease brain-based pain

The treatment to increase blood flow utilizes a specialized low-level light therapy (not to be confused with laser therapy) using light emitting diode technology. This technology was originally developed by NASA to assist in increasing blood flow. The low level light therapy is like watering a tree. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a tree and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper.

Figure 2

Figure 2: The blood vessels will grow back around the nerves much like a tree’s roots grow when watered.

The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage there is hope! Dr. John Silva D.C. at The Neuropathy Relief Center will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing, and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy.

451 SW Bethany Drive, Suite 200 Port St. Lucie (In The Medical Imaging Building)

Dr Silva will be offering this neuropathy severity examination to the first 12 callers. Call 772.429.8800 to make an appointment with Dr. Silva to determine if your peripheral neuropathy can be treated.

Peripheral Neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which will cause the nerves to begin to slowly degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow.

TREASURE COAST — The best way to introduce young audiences to the delights of live theater is to take them to see live theater. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of opportunities in the area for family-friendly, high-quality entertainment. Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach has created Riverside Theatricals, a division of the theater that will focus on the creation of new musicals. The first, “Poodleful, A K9 Mystery Musical,” will have its world premiere at the Riverside Sept. 18-20. It will be presented at the Lyric Theatre in Stuart Sept. 25. The show, written by Ken Clifton and DJ Salisbury, is based on the book “Pansy at the Palace” by Cynthia Bardes. It follows the adventures of Pansy the poodle and her “person,” Avery, at the glamourous Palace Hotel in Beverly Hills. Jon Moses, the Riverside’s managing director and chief operating officer, said that it is a long-standing desire of Riverside Theatre CEO Allen Cornell

POODLE from page B1 and musical director Clifton to create new works. “We’re starting with children’s productions,” Moses said. “It’s a little niche of the market we felt was underserved. We wanted to help beef up the amount of entertainment for younger families.” The show begins with Pansy as a “poodle in waiting,” looking for a person to adopt her. When Avery comes long, the two are very happy. Then a mysterious theft happens that threatens to close the hotel. Pansy helps solve the mystery.

For Moses and the creative team, choosing this particular production was a matter of timing. “We just so happened to have the book in front of us,” Moses said. The author, Cynthia Bardes, had dropped off a copy of the book to Allen. She’s local and accessible. When you’re looking for new works, there are things in the public domain and those where you have to negotiate permission with the author. She’s fond of the theater and we were able to quickly contact her and negotiate it. She was thrilled we were using her book to launch a new project.”

The cast of six for the show are all young professionals. “They’re all fresh out of college,” Moses said. “They are with us for the entire year. The show opens at the Riverside Sept. 18 and at the Lyric Sept. 25. We have an engagement in Gainesville Nov. 12 at the Florida Theatre Conference. We’re hoping to pick up additional dates. All of the actors are also in one show or another in the two Main Stage shows. It’s an incredible opportunity for young performers.” Moses said a second production is in the works. While he wasn’t ready to give out details,

he said it would be for children and families. “You have to start at a young age,” he said. “That’s why we’re starting the way we are starting. We’re building the audiences for tomorrow by getting them accustomed to the theater.” “Poodleful” will be presented at the Riverside Theatre Sept. 1820. Tickets begin at $10. Order online or call the box office at (772) 231-6990. It will be presented at the Lyric Theatre Sept. 25. Tickets are $15. Florida author wins gold medal for southern fiction FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — Multiple award-winning author Bette Lee Crosby’s Passing through Perfect, the third book in the bestselling Wyattsville Series, has won another award earning a Gold Medal for Southern Fiction by Reader’s Favorite. Set in the aftermath of WW2, Passing through Perfect is the story of Benjamin Church, a Black sharecropper in the hardscrabble back roads of Alabama. It is a story rife with the injustices of the South and rich with the compassion of strangers. Kirkus Reviews calls it “Well-written and engaging,” and suggests, “readers will welcome back characters from previous Wyattsville books.” Midwest Book Review claims it is “Southern fiction at its best: spiritually infused, warm, and family-oriented - an atmosphere which permeates every chapter with descriptions firmly rooted in family tradition and the South.”

Reader’s Favorite Review states “Crosby’s writing is fluid and careful never to slip into sentimentalism. Passing through Perfect is very nearly a perfect novel and, indeed, often exceeds that very exacting standard.” Crosby, author of twelve novels and winner of over twenty literary awards including the 2013 Royal Palm Literary Award for Women’s Fiction, has carved out a unique niche in writing stories about older women facing real life challenges. Her protagonists are sassy, smart, and Southern. They deal with issues like unwanted children, loss of a spouse, and financial ruin. Readers identify with Crosby’s characters and have turned her books into a #1 Bestsellers on Barnes & Noble and Amazon. Passing through Perfect, along with Crosby’s other novels can be found online at iBooks, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and GooglePlay. Her books are currently selling in five countries.
