ST. LUCIE WEST — The Port St. Lucie City Council blessed a plan for Barnabas Christian Academy to take the old Keiser University College of Golf and Sport Management campus, 1860 S.W. Fountainview Blvd. School starts at the new campus on Tuesday, Sept. 8. At the Aug. 24th regular meeting, the council considered and unanimously approved a special exception for the school to relocate there from its old home at Port St. Lucie Bible Church, 1120 Paar Dr. The new campus allows the school to grow in two phases to 450 students. Last school year it had 115 students. “We will have the ability to expand, which will be so nice,” Cynthia Bartal, founder and upper school principal said in a telephone interview after the council meeting. “It’s been nice to be a ministry of the church, but it’s time to grow and move.” Mayor Greg Oravec said the

Sheriff’s Office preps for fight on flakka Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A deadly drug called “flakka” has been making headlines in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties for more than a year. As it makes its way up the coast, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department is preparing to battle the drug on a local level.

“It’s coming, we know it’s coming,” said Lieutenant Mike Sheelar, with the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office. Flakka is an extremely inexpensive drug and in doses as small as one-tenth of a gram, it can cause users to go into a state known as “excited delirium.” “It’s about half the price of a crack-rock on the street,” Lt. Sheelar said. Making it extremely easy and tempting for young

people to get ahold of. The drug’s trademark is its ability to skyrocket a person’s core temperature, leading to possible organ damage and in some cases, death. Dozens of users have died in South Florida this year as a result of this drug. Other side effects include extreme confusion and erratic and unpredictable behavior.

Local fitness competition brings out the muscle and form FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

ST. LUCIE WEST — Retired mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter and local gym owner, Phil Daru, took home a second place trophy last week after his first ever bodybuilding competition. Daru was one of nearly 60 men and women competing in the Treasure Coast Championship Bodybuilding, Figure and Bikini Contest Aug. 22 at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center. He took second place in the Men’s bodybuilding middleweight division. But he looks forward to many more opportunities to take home a first place trophy, Daru said. “I’ve always been into working out, but having to retire from MMA, I needed something to fill that void,” Daru said. Bodybuilding turned out to be the answer. “It builds physical and mental toughness,” Daru said. Like all of the competitors in the Civic Center arena Saturday, Daru follows a strict diet and tax-

ing workout regimens. “Now the plan is to get as big as I can, get my pro card, and go from there,” Daru said. Daru owns “Daru Fitness Performance,” an 11,000 square-foot gym in St. Lucie West that he says is a place people can come to achieve their fitness goals, no matter what those goals might be. Port St. Lucie professional body builder, Jennifer Brown, put on a posing clinic for first-time competitors Friday before the competition kicked off. Brown said she started training about three and a half years ago and immediately loved the lifestyle. She turned pro early on and has been competing ever since. Her piece of advice to the newcomers on the bodybuilding scene: “It doesn’t matter what your background is, what your end goal is, just keep plugging away.” Palm City teen Jonathan Estevez was one of the first-time competitors to take the stage Saturday. Leading up to the event, Estevez

Riverside announces new educational director Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — Jim VanValen is a familiar face to Riverside Theatre audiences. The actor has appeared there in “She Loves Me,” “Sylvia,” “Rounding Third,” “Three Viewings,” and “Underneath the Lintel.” VanValen is also an associate professor of theater and head of the acting program at Cornell College in Iowa. He will bring both his acting and educational talents to Vero Beach as the new full-time education director for Riverside Children’s Theatre. He is assuming the positon following the retirement of longtime education director Linda Downey. VanValen spoke recently from his home in Iowa about this transition period and what he hopes to accomplish at Riverside Children’s Theatre. He was approached about the job by Allen Cornell, producing artistic director and CEO of the Riverside Theatre. “When I was approached, it was a big surprise,” he said. “I was honored that they’d think of me. What I’d like to do is to continue to build upon the foundation so many talented people have put together. We’ll continue to reach out to young people in the community and to expand our education so it can reach all ages, for anyone interested in exploring theater.” VanValen said he hopes to look into ways to connect the Children’s Theatre with Riverside’s Main Stage productions. “I’d like to connect the talent and professional standards on that stage and link it to our training programs,” he said. “All of the artists that come are professionals: actors, designers, directors and choreographers. I’d like to connect them with students and embrace our mission statement not only to entertain but to educate. I’d like to tap into areas that may-

Negron strengthens claim he’ll be next Senate President Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — If Sen. Joe Negron is anything it’s confidently understated. This is the man who headed up the 2013 Indian River Lagoon select committee that asked the Florida Legislature for $220 million for cleanup projects and got $232 million. Leading up to the victory, Negron told Your Voice, “We’ll get something for the lagoon.” When the appropriations passed the legislature and governor’s line-item veto pen in 2014, Negron’s response amounted to — that’s good, and please pass the salt. So when Negron announced Wednesday, Aug. 26, in an email to press throughout the state, that he’s got the votes in the Florida Senate to become the next president, it was hard to dismiss the claim as wishful thinking.

Patrick McCallister “It’s undisputed I have the majority of votes for Senate President,” he said in his trademarked near monotone during a telephone interview after the announcement. Not so fast, Joe, Sen. Jack Latvala, Clearwater, retorted in his area’s press. He’s also vying for the big chair in the State Senate and says he’s got plenty of muscle

to win this fight. Negron may or may not have ever read “The Art of War” — I’ve never asked — but he does seem to live his political life by Gen. Sun Tzu’s advice to, “Fight only the battles in which victory is sure.” It was unusual for anyone vying for the Senate presidency to release a list of supporters so early in the game. The Negron list has 14 of 26 Republican senators, including himself. The act is tantamount to a poker player laying all his cards on the table early in a hand and tossing in more chips. But the list includes heavy hitters in the 40-member chamber. The Senate’s 14 Democrats will be sitting this one out, because they’re the minority party. If Ne-

Senator Joe Negron gron’s hand of 14 votes holds up, he’s got the winning cards. There are only 12 votes left. In December Senate Republicans will have a shindig and pick

is taking steps to alert affected taxpayers and to further investigate the perpetrators. The IRS estimated in the meantime that these criminal downloads might result in only 15,000 false tax return filings. The Get Transcript application enables taxpayers to obtain line-by-line tax return information going back five or more tax years. Criminals could use this specific tax return information to file false tax returns that appear similar to taxpayers’ legitimately filed past-year returns. The false returns could then bypass the IRS’s filters that flag suspicious returns by looking for anomalies in tax information. According to recently released IRS FAQs, the Get Transcript application uses a multi-step process to check identities. First taxpayers must submit personal information including Social Security number, birth date, filing status and address. The second step poses certain “out of wallet” questions based on information that only the taxpayer should know. The IRS detected the breach of the application in May while investigating a suspected denial-of-service attack on the appli-

Michael Repoli cation. After recognizing a large number of suspicious domains used to access an unexpectedly high volume of tax transcripts, the IRS determined that criminal organizations had attempted to access tax transcripts of approximately 200,000 taxpayers, and had been successful in an estimated 104,000 cases. The core tax filing system used by 150 million taxpayers was unaf-

TREASURE COAST — Child advocate and nonprofit figurehead Debbie Butler has identified a gaping hole in the already traumatic process of removing abused and neglected children from their homes. The price tag to patch the hole, Butler says, is about $300,000. That $300,000 would buy a house Butler and her team at “Guardians for New Futures” would transform into a kid-friendly haven for children and teens displaced from their homes. She already has her eye on one property for the future “Sanctuary 4Kids Treasure Coast.” In the course of the last six months, the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) has plucked an average of 47 kids per month from their homes in St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. The reason for their removal could range from fire to physical abuse

tact a grandparent. Other times, they sleep in a state building office while employees work to find them placement in a safe home. They are often separated from siblings. Frequently, they overhear adult conversations regarding their parents or their own uncertain futures that, Butler said, little ears should not have to hear. “It’s not DCF’s fault, they’re doing the best they can with the resources they have,” Butler said. “But the truth is, once a child is removed from the home, it can be several hours to overnight before [DCF] finds a relative or a safe place to take them for a longer period of time.” That is where Butler thinks her organization can fill in the gap. “These children need a loving distraction while people work in the background to find them a loving, and safe place to live,” Butler said. “They can come and watch TV, play Xbox, bake cookies, get a bath, put on fresh pajamas, and crawl into a warm bed.”

He left the Civic Center clutching two trophies, second place in the “Men’s Physique” category and first place in the “Teen Men’s Physique” category. “I’ve been lifting in general for two years, and when I got to where I wanted to be, I thought ‘why not compete?’” Estevez said. Estevez said he has put almost all of his extra time and energy into his bodybuilding passion since he graduated from high school last spring. He works out six days per week and is on a calculated, zero-fat, high-protein diet that entails eating at least six times per day. “Bodybuilding shows discipline, dedication, and shows that I really care about my physical fitness and my body. It builds character,” Estevez said. St. Lucie West’s Joseph Napolitano competed against Estevez for the “Teen Men’s Physique” prize. He took home second place. Ultimately, no matter what the classes, these are skills we want to introduce students to. These are not only skills onstage, but life skills. They’re not only better performers, but better citizens and members of the community.” While VanValen has been teaching college students, he believes that education is universal. “The words and exercises may change, but the goals are always the same,” he said. “Teaching is

leaders to take those seats after the 2016 elections. Negron crafts a narrative in which they go into a room, everyone shakes hands, and he comes out president-elect. Latvala’s supporters are pointing to some unpredictable cards standing between Negron and the big seat. Reapportionment, the possibility of special elections, and term limits. Three of the senators on Negron’s list are term-limited, and no one knows every change reapportionment might bring given that the courts are involved. Negron says no one opposing his election as the Senate’s presidency has named any unusual and unpredictable factor. “There’s an orderly process of transition of Senate leadership and it’s been done for decades like this,” he said. If Negron’s play to become Senate President succeeds, as it seems likely to, what’s in it for the Treasure Coast? His answer smacks of more understatement. “I intend to use the opportunities I have in the Legislature to make sure our community is adequately represented and receive our fair share of appropriations,” he said. Back in the real world where few talk in monotone, the crown jewel of Negron’s local popularity is the Indian River Lagoon and his battle

against discharges of the nutrient-rich Lake Okeechobee waters that further foul the withering waterway. As Senate President, people will answer Negron’s phone calls and tell him what’s happening with the $232 million the Florida Senate Select Committee on Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee gained in 2014. “One of my priorities is making sure these projects are finished on time and in budget,” he said. That’s the Treasure Coast’s stake in this political poker game. Negron’s district covers the eastern sides of St. Lucie and Martin along with portions of Indian River and Palm Beach counties. Coincidently his wife, Martin County School Board member Rebecca Negron, is running for Congress to replace the outgoing congressman Patrick Murphy. Negron’s list of supporting senators is, in order of districts: Sen. Don Gaetz (District 1), Sen. Aaron Bean (District 4), Sen. Travis Hutson (District 6), Sen. Rob Bradley (District 7), Sen. Dorothy Hukill (District 8), Senator Kelli Stargel (District 15), Senator Thad Altman (District 16), Sen. Wilton Simpson (District 18), Sen. Jeff Brandes (District 22), Sen. Garrett Richter (District 25), Sen. Bill Galvano (District 26), Sen. Lizbeth Benacquisto (District 30), Negron (District 32) and Sen. Anitere Flores (District 37).

Tradition veterans home making progress Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TRADITION — Work on the Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home is progressing, but it’s not the kind folks see when they’re driving by its Tradition Parkway address in Port St. Lucie. The Florida Department of Veterans Affairs is in the early stages of building its seventh veterans nursing home after getting a nod from the Florida Cabinet and funding from the State Legislature. Steve Murray, communications director, said more than one state agency is involved. “We have been working with the Florida Department of Management Services, which oversees the architectural design and construction, “Murray said. Wayne Teegardin, St. Lucie County’s veterans services manager, said that his office is getting a lot of queries about the home. “We do have people coming into our office all the time inquiring about it and wanting to know when they can sign up (to become residents),” he said. “We have (adult) children coming in to

ask about their parents.” And— “We’re getting calls about jobs, of course,” Teegardin said. “‘When are they hiring?’” Teegardin said his answer is the same to everyone. “We’re telling them there’ll be public notices about the groundbreaking,” he said. So, when’s the groundbreaking going to be? “I see the groundbreaking with the shovels and everything sometime in 2016,” Murray said. Once the groundbreaking happens, there’ll be some more waiting. The last home the FDVA built was the Clyde E. Lassen State Veterans’ Nursing Home in St. Augustine. Murray said the groundbreaking was in 2008, and it opened in 2010. “It was a four-and-a-half year project from the time it was awarded (until) your residents were going in,” Murray said. The reason veteran homes take time to build is simple. “For us, you can’t get it done fast enough, but you have to get these right,” Murray said “These are not fast-food buildings that in the blink of an eye pop up on the corner and start serving food.”

The state veterans department isn’t just building a nursing home and opening it for business. Because different generations of veterans have different needs, it has to look far into the future during the design phase. Additionally, the state veteran homes must hold up when hurricanes are barreling at the Sunshine State. “They’re designed to withstand Florida’s worst weather conditions,” Murray said. Part of the seeming groundbreaking delay is because the federal VA is paying for 65 percent of the construction and has to approve the design in stages. In coming months, the architect, Rogers, Lovelock, and Fritz, Orlando, will give the VA its first design work to review. “That’s a formality in order to start drawing down the federal funds to construct the facility,” Murray said. When completed, the Copas home will have 120 to 128 residents. It’ll also have a lot of employees taking care of them. “It’s going to be in the 170, 175, 180 range,” Murray said. The Florida Cabinet selected Tradition in Port St. Lucie for the

state’s next veteran home last September. It voted to name it after Fort Pierce Medal of Honor recipient Ardie Ray Copas in January. Copas posthumously received the nation’s highest military honor in 2013. State veterans homes are named after deceased Medal of Honor recipients who have ties to the areas they’re located. When opened, the Copas Home will generate about $7 million a year in wages. Additionally, it’ll spend about another $5 million a year locally for supplies and services. The closest state veterans home to the Treasure Coast now is the Alexander “Sandy” Nininger Veterans’ Nursing Home, 8401 W. Cypress Drive, Pembroke Pines. The next closest is the Emory L. Bennett State Veterans’ Nursing Home, 1920 Mason Ave., Daytona Beach. Bennett was built in 1993. Nininger in 2001. Murray said the Lassen State Veterans’ Nursing Home in St. Augustine cost about $30 million to build. Other homes are in Land O’ Lakes, Panama City and Port Charlotte. There’s also a state veterans assisted living facility in Lake City.

9/11 blood drive partnership saves lives while giving remembrance to fallen heroes

772.343.9411

MARTIN COUNTY — Wanting to turn the heartbreak of 9/11 into a day of outreach and caring for the community, the venerable Law Firm of Crary Buchanan launched its first 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive in 2010. This year, in a powerful partnership with Jetson Appliance, the blood drive breaks new ground with two different location sites. On Friday Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Blood One will be collecting donations at the Crary Buchanan Law Firm, 759 South Federal Highway in Stuart and at the Jetson Appliance & Electronics Experts store, 4145 S. U.S. Highway in Fort Pierce. Managing partner Mike Crary came up with the concept for the drive after experiencing his own emotional response to the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001 by immediately

donating blood. Crary has donated more than 8 gallons of blood during his life. Although the occasion will forever be a solemn and emotional one, the spirit of the American people is evident at this annual recognition event. This year, famed Florida Highwaymen painter R.L. Lewis will contribute an original painting to be presented to one lucky donor who enters his or her name into a drawing at either location. Enough blood was collected during previous drives to save the lives of more than 3,000 people. Help the Treasure Coast break another record! Roll up your sleeves and join your friends and colleagues — it’s quick, it’s painless and it’s patriotic! Make an appointment at www. oneblooddonor.org and use sponsor code #10153. For information, call Crary Buchanan at (772) 2872600.

FLAKKA from page A1 Flakka training will be integrated into the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department’s quarterly training regiments, Sheelar said. Training will kick off in September and will cover how to identify the drug, how to handle people under the influence of the drug, and what medical side effects the drug can cause. A “block” of training will be dedicated exclusively to flakka. In comparison, other “blocks” may be dedicated to skills like driving or shooting. “That’s how serious we’re taking this,” Sheelar said. St. Lucie County is taking many of its cues from Broward County when it comes to training up its forces, borrowing PowerPoint presentations and short videos that explain first-hand how to handle the drug and its victims. All 227 law enforcement certified agents will go through the training, Sheelar said. St. Lucie County is sandwiched between two counties that have already made arrests and responded to multiple medical calls regarding the drug. Martin County Sheriff, William Snyder, compares experimenting with a new designer drug to playing Russian roulette with five bullets loaded in a six-chamber gun.

FITNESS from page A8 Galveston College in Galveston, Texas. “With body building, you’re sculpting your own body. To see the progress as you go, that’s pretty cool,” Napolitano said. Each competitor performed in front of judges Saturday afternoon, before a large crowd gathered that evening for the show. The pre-judging largely determines the winners, said fitness coordinator for the Humana Fitness & Wellness Center at

“And we’re not overstating the dangers here,” Sheriff Snyder added. According to Sheriff Snyder, people under the influence of flakka can exhibit “superhuman” strength that poses a threat to everyone around them, including law enforcement officers and medical personnel attempting to distribute aid. “They don’t respond to Tasers, they don’t respond to pepper spray and pain compliance techniques don’t work,” Sheriff Snyder said. “They’re a danger to themselves, to law enforcement, and to people around them.” “People have been known to strip down in the back of police cars to try and cool off,” Sheriff Snyder explained. “People are coming into the hospitals screaming and fighting, sometimes fighting for their life, and it’s dangerous.” Just to the north, in Indian River County, police are also getting acquainted with the drug. In June, authorities responded to a call where a man was “acting crazy.” Jermaine Benjamin, 41, was transferred to the hospital for immediate medical attention where he died shortly after, according to the Medical Examiner’s report. The drug’s roots have been traced back to underground labs in China, but the epicenter

the Port. St. Lucie Civic Center, Frank Nappi. That way, competitors can let loose at night when all the fanfare begins, Nappi added. As the event’s organizer, Nappi said he was more than pleased with this year’s competitors as well as the vendors and fans who showed up to support the bodybuilders. “This city really came out to support their athletes,” Brown said. “Frank Nappi and the Civic Center really did an incredible job with this show.”

In addition, children would be able to talk with counselors and trained professionals in an environment where they feel safe and protected, Butler said. Butler pitched her idea to a room full of community movers and shakers including representatives from other nonprofits, local governments, and law enforcement agencies, on Aug. 28. Among the audience members was Adam Fetterman, local attorney and general counsel for the St. Lucie County Sheriff. “I’m surely supportive of this. I think it’s unfortunate that we have to do something like this, that the State doesn’t play the important role that it should for these kids,” Fetterman said. “When law enforcement has to get involved and remove a child because of safety, sometimes it is a very traumatic situation,” Fetterman said. “It’s important for them to feel safe, not just to be safe,” he added. Butler’s proposed sanctuary could be that safe place that Fetterman agrees the four-county area is completely lacking. “This is an unmet need for the children in our area,” said Linda Chastain, director at Hope’s Closet a St. Lucie County-based organization born out of local nonprofit Graceway Village in 2010. Hope’s Closet has already committed to a partnership with Butler’s future sanctuary to provide fresh, clean clothing for children who arrive there. “At Hope’s Closet, we receive referrals from guidance counselors and teachers who see children come to school in obvious distress,” Chastain said. “We would just expand our mission and our ministry to include the sanctuary.” In 2008, Butler became part of a trio of women to launch the “Guardians for New Futures,” a nonprofit organization with a mission “to support the unfunded needs of abused and neglected children while increasing commu-

nity awareness and education to further protect children,” according to the organization’s website. Since then, the organization has facilitated more than 50 monthly training workshops on child-related issues across the Treasure Coast. The nonprofit also hosts the annual “Treasure Coast Child Summits.” These summits feature top-notch child specialists and advocates educating community members on targeted topics pertaining to protecting youth. Recent summits attracted more than 450 attendees from 200 agencies and organizations, according to Butler. With plenty of successes in their wake, the Guardian’s next big endeavor will be the sanctuary. To elevate the sanctuary from idea to reality, Butler said it will take a few kind philanthropists or a group of community organizations banding together to purchase the house. Under the guidance of Butler and her experienced board at Guardians for New Futures, everything else will fall into place, Butler said. “The more trauma a child experiences, the more likely they are to return to a life like the one they came from,” Butler said. “Anything we can do to make their little lives feel more secure and more protected, that could change a child’s life forever. For more information on Guardians for New Futures, the Sanctuary 4Kids Treasure Coast, or how to get involved, visit www. gfnf4kids.org, call (772) 807-3868, or email info@gfnf4kids.org.

TRANSCRIPTS from page A6 fected, the IRS said. One of the IRS’s highest priorities is to inform the taxpayers whose transcripts were downloaded (or nearly downloaded) that identity theft criminals have uncovered a large volume of their personal information. VETERAN’S LUNCHEON Wednesday, September 9, Noon

for the flakka “phenomenon” in South Florida, according to Sheriff Snyder’s intel, is just down I-95 in the West Palm area. On July 21, a confidential informant led Martin County authorities to make their first arrest on an alleged flakka dealer. Adam Andrew Marini, 42, of Stuart, was found with a nasal spray bottle containing approximately 61.5 grams of liquid flakka. “If you do the math, that’s 600plus doses in one nasal spray bottle,” said Detective Timothy Baltes of the Special Investigations Section for the Martin County Sheriff’s Department. Marini currently faces one charge of possession of Pyrrolidinovalerophenone (PVP), commonly known as flakka. He also faces a pending federal charge for trafficking the substance. Baltes has served on Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) task forces for meth lab cleanups and has extensive experience in local drug enforcement. “Flakka is the new age PCP,” Baltes said. “It’s highly addictive, and there is no such thing as doing it just one time.” Most concerning to Baltes is how easy it is for people to overdose. With one-tenth of a gram result-

ing in a five-hour high, “think how easy it is to take two times or five times that amount,” Baltes said. Sheriff Snyder warns parents to talk to their children. “Everyone at the school knows it’s out there, all the kids are talking about it,” said Snyder. The drug can be eaten, snorted, injected, or vaporized, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. “Kids are putting drips of it in liquid form on little candies,” Snyder said. “Someone might take flakka and not realize there are other kinds of drugs mixed in.” Teens planning on experimenting with the drug often intend on doing so while away from home for several hours at a time, like a concert or a sleepover. Once this drug is in their system, Snyder warns “there’s no hiding it.” Though it affects all people differently, death by heart attack, suicide and kidney failure have all been linked back to the drug, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. “The health concerns are huge,” Sheelar added. “People are dying from this. People don’t know what they’re doing and they’re putting themselves in danger and other people in danger.”

Peripheral Neuropathy WARNING! The treatment that is provided at The Neuropathy Relief Center has three main goals:

As you can see in Figure 1: When these very small blood vesFigure 1, as the blood sels become diseased they begin to shrivel up vessels that surround the and the nerves begin to degenerate nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not receive the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms. The most common method your doctor will recommend to treat your neuropathy is with prescription drugs that may temporarily reduce your symptoms. These drugs have names such as Gabapentin, Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Neurontin, and are primarily antidepressant or anti-seizure drugs. These drugs may cause you to feel uncomfortable and have a variety of harmful side effects. The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here in Port St Lucie that offers you new hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects.

In order to effectively treat your neuropathy three factors must be determined.

1

What is the underlying cause?

2

How much nerve damage has been sustained?

3

How much treatment will your condition require?

Don’t Hesitate to Act Now! Peripheral Neuropathy is a progressive condition and once you have sustained 85% nerve loss, there is likely nothing we can do for you.

Dr. John Silva D.C. The Neuropathy Relief Center

1

Increase blood flow

2

Stimulate small fiber nerves

3

Decrease brain-based pain

The treatment to increase blood flow utilizes a specialized low-level light therapy (not to be confused with laser therapy) using light emitting diode technology. This technology was originally developed by NASA to assist in increasing blood flow. The low level light therapy is like watering a tree. The light therapy will allow the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair. It’s like adding water to a tree and seeing the roots grow deeper and deeper.

Figure 2

Figure 2: The blood vessels will grow back around the nerves much like a tree’s roots grow when watered.

The amount of treatment needed to allow the nerves to fully recover varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation. As long as you have not sustained at least 85% nerve damage there is hope! Dr. John Silva D.C. at The Neuropathy Relief Center will do a neuropathy severity examination to determine the extent of the nerve damage for only $70. This neuropathy severity examination will consist of a detailed sensory evaluation, extensive peripheral vascular testing, and a detailed analysis of the findings of your neuropathy.

451 SW Bethany Drive, Suite 200 Port St. Lucie (In The Medical Imaging Building)

Dr Silva will be offering this neuropathy severity examination to the first 12 callers. Call 772.429.8800 to make an appointment with Dr. Silva to determine if your peripheral neuropathy can be treated.

21162

Peripheral Neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. This damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which will cause the nerves to begin to slowly degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow.

BARNABAS from page A26 the roundabout intersection of Southwest Peacock and Fountainview. “I know this school to be very focused on discipline and logistics,” she said. Berger said she had children attend the school. She pondered aloud about whether she needed to recuse herself from the vote, but opted not to. Berger said she no longer had children at the school and paid full tuition costs for them to attend. Florida law requires members of elected and appointed boards to vote on all items unless there are narrowly-defined conflicts of interests. Bartal said the school has already gotten 170 students for the 2015-2016 school year, in part because of the move. It was previously unable to expand. “This is our 20th year at the academy,” Bartal said. Both the school and church, she said, are growing and need leg room. She said with the move the school hopes to become better known in Tradition and St. Lucie West. “I do believe it will be a good match, a good combination, for the school with the businesses that are there,” Bartal said.

Bartal said the school aims not only to give children a “strong biblical, Christian education, but a well-rounded mix of patriotism, fine arts, athletics and college-prep as well. The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 566, Mike Bradley Chapter, Port St. Lucie, will send a color guard for the school’s first day at the new campus, and the school may be around town to entertain folks in coming months. “We do try to keep the fine arts alive and give back to the community that way,” Bartal said. She said one of the most telling facts about the school is seven of its teachers were students. “They come back here to teach (after college),” Bartal said. “I find that pretty amazing.” With the move, the school is starting a program for gifted students. Bartal said the program will emphasize science, technology, engineering and math (collectively known as STEM). Additionally, the school is aiming to start a Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program this year. It needs 20 students signed up to do that. Barnabas Christian Academy is having an open house at the new campus on Sunday, Sept. 20, from 2 to 5 p.m. The public is welcome. The school hours are 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

But this simple lung cancer screening can increase your odds.

Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer. Symptoms usually appear in the latest stages, when it is the deadliest. Low-dose CT lung cancer screening programs for current and former smokers can detect lung cancer at the earliest stages before symptoms appear, improving the cure rate to as high as 90 percent.

Don Bestor don’t think I’m just referring to musicians because that’s absolutely not the case. Without volunteers who are organized, we wouldn’t be able to accomplish half of what we do. Without volunteers who are self-starters and good managers, we wouldn’t have a table full of yummy refreshments for you every Tuesday evening at the Jazz Jams, and without volunteers who are willing to wear a whole lot of hats, we wouldn’t have photos, sound, equipment, publicity, and all of the other seemingly invisible details that make every show possible. We are tremendously grateful to our volunteers, members, supporters, and those who come out to enjoy the music. As the leaves (and the license plates) begin to change colors here in St. Lucie County signaling a new season, all of us from Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society tip our hats to welcome you back and offer a hearty ovation to those who make it happen all year long. Don Bestor, is a pianist and keyboardist with 27 years of “on the road” experience, 17 years of producing shows, and 12 years as a studio owner/engineer and president of the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society. Don was an arranging major at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
