Create your signature style Buying the dress tends to be the first major wedding purchase. Try these priceless tips on keeping your budget tight but your eyes wide open when shopping for your wedding dress. • S tay clear of merchants that don’t have a permanent local address and phone number. You may never see your dress after the initial deposit is cashed. • T ry your dress on in front of a full length, three-way mirror with the correct shoes. If you buy the dress in the wrong size or shape, alterations could end up costing more that the dress! • Ask your local salon about “safe bridal bargains” available at their store. Many times it is possible to buy sample gowns off the rack at the sale price. 8

What goes under

Top to bottom: Brian L. Garman Photography El Photography & Design | Schaffer’s, Salon Spa W

What you wear under your wedding gown is just as important as your dress. Properly fitting lingerie will help you feel and look great all day long. Once you’ve found the perfect gown, it’s important to visit a reputable lingerie shop with trained staff who can correctly determine the right undergarments for your particular style of dress. If you can, bring a photo of your wedding dress with you. Purchase intimate apparel before your first fitting so you can wear it when it’s time to try on and alter your dress. Take advantage of this special time in your life to take a look at some non-essential items as well. Bra and panty sets, nightgowns, and camisoles can make you feel beautiful and sensuous. What better time is there for you to splurge on yourself than now? Many lingerie shops now offer gift registries. Take advantage of this and let your friends and relatives know you’re registered. They’ll enjoy buying you these items as much as you’ll enjoy receiving them!

The ideal floral arrangements will make a colorful, lasting impression in all the areas you want decorated for your wedding, from pew bows to the bouquets, to the reception centerpieces and even the cake. Trends include adding unexpected flowers into your bouquet like succulents, simple but stunning centerpieces, and bright, bold colors. Be sure to ask your potential florist to show you samples of their previous wedding arrangements. Don’t hesitate to ask for references regarding past service in timeliness of delivery and set-up on the day of the wedding. By making detailed arrangements in advance, love blooms best!

Event Planning & Invitations Your invitation selection lets guests into what kind of wedding you are planning. Whether it’s modern, traditional or romantic, your invitation extends a first and lasting impression of your wedding style. An event planner keeps track of your wedding plans by attending appointments, handling communications from vendors, securing deposits and contracts, arranging transportation and hotel blocks, designing timeline documents, and more. Along with expert advice, your event planner also has a large resource of professionals

to recommend and might even help negotiate better rates for you. A “day-of” coordinator calls all of your vendors during the week of the wedding to verify everything. Coordinating the rehearsal and ceremony, assisting the photographer, supervising vendors and handling any problems are all important in creating a cohesive event. Your coordinator will spend all day making sure everything about your day is as perfect as can be! This page, from left: dSy Invitations | El Photography & Design Right page: dSy Invitations

The wedding cake is a tradition all by itself. Often, they are the focal centerpiece of the reception. Bakers are artists that can create a visual treat that is as elaborate or as traditionally simple as you choose. Your baker can help you by suggesting ideas that will draw together all of your wedding details to create a breathtaking cake. When visiting with potential bakers, take time to look through their portfolios, and share photos and ideas of cake designs you have in mind. Sampling several cake flavors may be helpful. Selecting your baker and ordering your cake several months in advance is important. 45

REAL WEDDINGS

REAL WEDDINGS

tim + taylor 09.20.14

After a romantic Christmas Eve,

Tim surprised Taylor with a gorgeous solitaire from Joseph’s Jewelers, and of course she said, “Yes!” Two days later, the timeless St. Ambrose Cathedral in Downtown Des Moines was secured for a September 20, 2014, wedding, and the planning was underway.

Tim, a florist, and Taylor, an event planner, had planned a lot of weddings! All of them special and beautiful, but their wedding was going to be a fusion of all the extraordinary things they have created for others with touches of their own unique styles. But, first things first! The Dress… After visiting several bridal shops, Bridal Boutique’s personal attention and nice assortment of styles won the day. After a whirlwind of decisions, showers, parties, and only nine months to pull it all together, the day finally arrived. THE BIG DAY. It was a rainy, overcast

Saturday but nothing could dampen the spirits of the wedding party! Champagne and orange juice flowed, as the bride’s

51

REAL WEDDINGS maids, maid of honor, flower girl and Moms helped prepare the Bride for her special day. Memories were made, fun was had, and tears of joy were shed足; it was perfect. The Sun in all its glorious warmth made its grand appearance as the Bride and her court walked the downtown streets to the cathedral. It was quite a sight. After the ceremony, the bride and groom were whisked away to the Des Moines Airport to board a flight to their wedding reception. The Bride and Groom made the grandest of entrances to their reception by landing just as the sun began to set. The delighted guests welcomed the newlyweds with applause and joy! Now, it was time to party! The airplane hanger was transformed into a beautiful venue with breathtakingly beautiful flowers adorning the tabletops, highlighted by the twinkle of floating candles. Like everything else the first dance was perfectly choreographed, filled with countless spins, several dips and ending in a kiss ... PICTURE-PERFECT! -Tim & Taylor

Jewelry & Gifts The bling!

Rings have long been considered an unbroken symbol of eternal love. The gift of an engagement ring often signals the desire to begin a new journey together, followed by the exchange of wedding bands by the bride and groom in the ceremony that confirms their commitment to share their future hopes and dreams. While wedding bands are gifts shared solely by the bride and groom, beautifully wrapped gifts ranging from practical to precious selected with care by family and friends also play an important part in 54

launching the newlyweds into their new life together. Bridal registry makes it onestop shopping and solves the potential problem of duplicates and the hassles of returns and exchanges. Since gifts have expanded far beyond the basics of china and crystal to restaurant gift certificates, garden centers and even honeymoon accounts, online shops work with hundreds of different retailers in a single registry. Whether it’s a beautiful love song or a fun party favorite, it’s time to get you and your guests dancing. Don’t forget to spend some time picking out the perfect song for your first dance, and double check that your DJ or live band can play it. Have you thought about passing a notebook around the reception so guests can doodle a special message to the couple? Another fun idea is to present a slideshow at the beginning of the reception of fun photos throughout the years. 61

Photography Picture perfect

You rely on family and friends to assist you on your wedding day, but when it comes to photography, it takes a great professional to preserve your big day. Do your research. Choose a photographer whose work you have seen and admired. Ask friends for recommendations. Forming a comfortable working relationship with your photographer is important. This person is going to spend a lot of time with the two of you. This is no time to by shy; ask lots of questions: How many posed shots? How many candid? Should the formal photos of the wedding party be taken before or after the ceremony? Are the albums and folder included in the price? When will the photographer leave the reception? 68

Once you have worked out all the details on your special day, go one step further—get everything in writing. Make certain your contract includes a payment schedule and penalties, if any, for a date change or cancellation. Then relax, smile and have fun, you are in the hands of a professional.

Hello! My name is Aaron and I consider myself quite lucky to enjoy what I do for a living and I take great pride in capturing portraits that will last a lifetime. Weddings are my true passion. I’ve photographed over 100 weddings and I love how every wedding is unique and different. Everything about a wedding day has been meticulously planned to portray who you are as a couple and each wedding has a visual story to tell. From the dress you knew was “the one,” to the locations, or to the look

74

when you see each other for the first time that day, all these things help portray who you are as a couple. I love capturing those moments and to begin telling the story of the rest of your lives together. My goal is to create elegant, modern pictures with a photojournalist style to help tell that story starting with the anticipation in the morning to the fun (sometimes crazy) dance shots and everything in between. It is truly an honor to be a part of my couple’s wedding day and I’m excited to see who’s story I’ll tell next!

sweetest thing I can remember was when my dad was walking

me down the aisle, we got to the end where he was giving me away to Lukas. I remember my dad hugging Lukas and telling him to be sure to take care of me. I looked at both of them and they were both very choked up! This was an awesome moment to see the love in the both of their eyes.

The funniest part of our wedding day was taking pictures at Jester

Park; we had just finished a 2 hour bus ride on a party bus, so we were all fairly… relaxed. The picture session started out fairly romantic, and ended up with pictures of the groomsmen with their pants tucked into their checkered flag socks; and selfies with the photographers! We ended up with some of the best pictures to capture our wedding day.”

Remembering your wedding day is sometimes difficult for couples. Videography will refresh your memory of the sights, sounds and emotions that all blurred together on your special day. Start with the right questions. How many guests can be seated comfortably and entertained in the reception area? Make sure there’s enough room for the tables, dance floor, bars and other amenities, plus a little elbow room for the guests. What items are included in the basic room rental? Some places offer only the site, so you may need to rent the amenities. Other places may offer you everything from the silver to the cake. Be sure the inclusions are listed 100

on your estimate, so you don’t have any surprises. What about additional service fees? Typical extras might include cutting your cake, uncorking your furnished champagne, and valet parking. Professional decorators can handle all the duties themselves, from creating your vision to the clean-up. The best part? It’s a major task you won’t have to worry about. If you have people you can rely on, you may want to handle the decorating yourself. It’s important to remember that you may not have much time to get decorations up and ready. Sometimes it’s hard to find the time to get everything as perfect as you deserve, and you may not have much time to tear down once the ceremony is over. If you go this route, try to think simple and look for decorations that can be prepared ahead of time and easily put into place.

over the course of five years of dating that started with several nervous double dates with mutual friends. Jimmy asked Lindsey to be his wife on TV, and with tears in her eyes she said yes. Inspired by true romance with a sweet, floral influence; Lindsey and Jimmy’s wedding day was a truly special celebration. From the petal pink chiffon bridesmaids dresses to the romantic florals and the pearl, ruffled wedding cake - every detail of the day had a gorgeous, soft, romantic feel. Family and friends gathered to celebrate the first day of Lindsey and Jimmy’s marriage. 135

Health & Beauty Blushing bride

There may never be another time in your life as exciting and exhilarating as the months leading up to your wedding. This may also be one of the most stressful times you experience because there are so many details to think about. Although it’s easy to say “relax” it’s not always easy to do. Now more than ever you need to use common sense to keep the anxiety under control and not spend too much effort worrying. Be realistic...every bride has the highest expectations for her wedding day. You may have dreamed about the “perfect wedding” since you were a little girl. Just don’t get so caught up in the dream that you miss out on the fun of the wedding planning. Keep everything in perspective and don’t sweat the small stuff. Pace yourself...planning should be done over a period of time. In the beginning it’s tempting to try to do everything at once, but stick to your schedule and spread the job out so you don’t over do it. 138

Honeymoon & Transportation Old-fashioned romance

No matter where the honeymoon of your dreams is, your vacation of a lifetime is possible when you plan ahead. Do you enjoy taking in museums, watching a breathtaking sunset while resting on a beach, hiking and biking? Think about what you enjoy doing together as you narrow your list of destinations. Airlines and hotels will only make a limited number of reservations, so it is important to make your reservation plans early. This will help you ensure your first

destination choice. Consult with a travel agent to coordinate the many logistics of your travel details. You will be busy making extensive plans for the wedding, so delegate these plans to someone who makes a living scheduling vacations every day. Your final wedding celebration is the honeymoon and the beginning of your life together. Plan ahead and ENJOY! This page: Red Door Photo & Design Left page: Brad & Chyla Photography

I told Michaela what I was looking for and she found the perfect resort location in Jamaica. The price was very reasonable and everything was up to our expectations! She made my destination wedding so easy!” —Karla & Nels

Iowa Marriage Licenses

What you need to know

Congratulations on your engagement and upcoming wedding in Iowa! To make sure you understand the marriage laws and requirements before setting your wedding date, we recommend verifying information with the Recorder’s office. Here are some important details you should know: • You do not have to be a resident of Iowa. Picture identification is required. You also need to provide Social Security information. • Iowa has a three (3) business day waiting period. Please note:

• The fee for a marriage license in Iowa is $35+ and cash only. The fee and acceptance of checks or credit cards varies from county to county. • You need to have one witness (over 18 years of age) with you when you apply for the license. • No other tests are required in Iowa for a marriage license. • You can use any ordained or licensed clergymen or justices of the peace. • An Iowa marriage license application expires after 6 months if you don’t use it.

State and county marriage license requirements often change. The above information is for guidance only and should not be regarded as legal advice. It is important that you verify all information with your local marriage license office or county clerk before making any wedding or travel plans.
