YOUTH IN REVOLT

Size four models that look like they haven’t had a bad hair day or a zit in their entire life, celebrities airbrushed beyond recognition, one thousand and one ways to get an orgasm, articles encouraging girls as young as thirteen to go out dressed in little more than a hanky, a one thousand five hundred dollar scarf advertised as a wise investment, girls ‘dressed’, posed and photographed for the pleasure of perverted old men and pubescent little boys, 20 question quizzes that will determine the rest of your life, miracle diets and miracle creams. That’s not life that’s a glossy magazine. Life’s is an amazing, beautiful, eye opening journey, a learning process through which we gather the knowledge and experience required to pass from this life into the next. Youth in revolt will evoke thought, feeling and discussion from start to finish, life will never be a glossy magazine but this, is progress. This is YOUTH IN REVOLT.

www.mindthemustard.com When did you start Mind the Mustard up? Mind the Mustard is actually turning 1 this Saturday, on Sept 1st. Why did you start Mind the Mustard up? After moving to London I started getting a lot of compliments on my style, and that made me more confident and experimental. I just thought that, hey, maybe I can make a living off my style? I wanted a creative job, where I was my own boss, and I love fashion so it suits me perfectly. Where did the idea come from? Where I live, there’s a lot of young people starting projects and trying to earn money off their art, music, photography or style. So it’s a hugely inspirational place to be, helping me realise what I wanted to do. Where did the name come from? What can I say - I love mustard!

What are you working on at the moment? We are at the moment trying to find new small indie designers willing to sell on our site. We want to support other small business as ourselves. Also, we are trying out having videos as a media of showing our clothes. Hopefully there will soon be little product videos on the site, so keep an eye out! What’s on the cards for Mind the Mustard next? Hopefully we will continue to grow and find our way to more laptops worldwide. Also, collaborating with more designers and sellers is something we are hoping and looking forward to. What is the ultimate goal? We want to keep on being a smaller business, with a personal, specific voice in fashion. We are not trying to please everyone or being the next H&M. We want to grow, but not too much. Where can kids buy Mind the Mustard goodies? We sell on our own site www. mindthemustard.com, as well as on ASOS Marketplace. What sets Mind the Mustard apart? -What makes it unique? I guess what makes us unique is that we have a very specific style. We’re not worrying too much about the market, but rather just selling clothes we want to wear ourselves. Another thing that sets us apart is that we’re only selling animal friendly clothes, so we don’t sell items made out of animal products. 5

YOUTH IN REVOLT

What has been Mind the Mustard’s biggest fashion acomplishment thus far? It’s hard to choose one single thing. For us the biggest accomplishment is just the amount of nice comments from people finding us online and appreciating what we’re doing. There’s nothing like good feedback like that. Tell us about a normal day behind the scenes at Mind the Mustard. There’s a lot of Photoshopping going on! Of course there’s also packaging, answering enquiries, and social networking. It’s not very glamourous! We spend surprisingly little time on photo-shoots in comparison actually. There’s just too much admin stuff to do. What’s your favourite Mind the Mustard piece? That’s a difficult question! Maybe my favourite piece is the wide legged trousers (http://www.mindthemustard.com/widelegged-trousers), which were sold almost immediately after we uploaded them. They are just too timeless and quirky yet minimalistic. But I have a lot of favourites, especially since I get to keep quite a lot of the items we buy, like the blue tie dye leggings, the orange and beige sandals, and the blue buckled boots.

Drunk and High, Who’s in Control? By Rose Tyler

Why do we drink alcohol? Why do we take drugs? I’m sure it’s not for the taste and smell. I don’t wake up on a Monday morning and think ‘Gee, I would really enjoy sipping on a nice glass of vodka.’ Does anyone? I don’t think anyone could honestly say they crave the fumy, burning taste of alcohol, or the pungent smell of lawn mower clippings filling your mouth after a bong hit. We drink alcohol because we want to get drunk. And we take drugs because we want to get high (The fact that it’s illegal always makes it that little more exciting). We want to lose those inhibitions and insecurities that tell us ‘You look terrible in that dress,’ ‘He’s out of your league,’ ‘She’s prettier than me,’ ‘I’m too nervous to talk to him.’ We like the feeling of losing control, and letting someone else take the wheel for a change. After all, making decisions and putting yourself out there is tough, and society is cut-throat. A lot of it,I guess, is in our heads as well; a placebo effect that lets you be more confident because you can blame the booze. With this in mind, it seems alcohol and drugs act as a scapegoat for all our unsavoury behaviour over the weekend. “I was so drunk on Saturday, I don’t even remember what I said,” see, scapegoat, bodyguard, shield. Something to lay the blame on, and put up that protective layer after the inebriation has worn off and we’ve released how vulnerable we were by letting our inhibitions go. So there it is, drugs and alcohol are an excuse. If alcohol tasted better, I don’t think I’d ever be sober.

Headphones in, world out. Death Grips – The Money Store 2012 To say Death Grips makes hip hop music out of the norm for the genre is a gross understatement. Following on from there brilliant mix tape Exmilitary, which was so out of the box, Death Grips have released there first of two major label releases for 2012. This Sacramento trio create intense and brash experimental hip hop that, for some hip hop purists, exudes too many nonhip hop qualities to even be considered part of the genre. MC Ride’s vocal style and flow is aggressive and demands attention, and at times can even be swallowed by the brash and intense beats, but all the parts of this record really compliment and create an unforgettable listen. My personal favourite track on the album is ‘System Blower’. With a glitchy sound and intermittent bleeps, it sounds a lot like an actual system blowing up. MC Ride is at his abrasive best, and my favourite lyrics are “Suck my dick, it’s not cool, I’m too sick, what time is it” ( I know, I’m incredibly mature). While not having extremely conscious or deep meaningful lyrics, the ability for this album to stay in your head and demand another listen is commendable.

Margot And The Nuclear So And So’s – The Dust Of Retreat 2006 Ok, I will not lie, the initial intrigue I had with Margot And The Nuclear So And So’s was purely based on the name. How could it not be? Initially when trying to tell anyone about this band I would run out of breath or my fingers would begin to hurt from excessive typing, I was THAT passionate. Even after all that intrigue washed away though I was still left with an enchanting and orchestral album that has stayed with me since it’s release. Richard Edwards’ vocals have a very gentle and caring sound to them, even when the subject matter is about break ups. Unlike all other Margot releases, this album contains 8 different members, which is hard to believe because it doesn’t become overwhelming at any time and often can even be understated. ‘Dress Me Like A Clown’ has very simple lyrical premise, it tells a story about a girlfriend who made a fool out of him and is shouldered by Richard’s vocals which are in pain but also filled with relief. With the use of a cello and beautiful backing vocals it has a nice build and ends with one and a half minutes of just Richard, his guitar and a tambourine, the vocals echoed, similar to a live venue sound. This is an album that contains moments that can please anyone and it is definitely an album to let sink in and to admire.

Cordial Factory – First Make Thieves 2012 Seeing first hand a band evolve and grow is an amazing thing. With Melbourne band Cordial Factory I have done that, well I felt like I have. First hearing about them from a friend two years ago, I went to my first gig of theirs being told I would love them. And love them I did. With three great and diverse female vocalists, I was in heaven. But even then I could see that a ‘bigger’ sound would help these voices and give them somewhere to go. Now a four piece and only two female vocalists, the sounds are not as sparse anymore. They are vibrant and energetic and exhibit everything folk, with the melodies sharper and songs more focused. With the addition of a double bass and bass drum, the guitar and banjos have more of a direction. The song that showcases the best of this band is the second song off the EP ‘Martello’, With the best “oohs” I have heard in a song for a long time, whenever this song plays I can never get that out of my head. With slow building verses that really make the chorus have a certain punch, a certain energy that when heard live entrances a crowd. Having recently witnessed one of their performances at a packed Northcote Social Club I can confidently say crowds are likely to be entertained by this band for years to come. By Cam Johns

..PLAY. Cut the Rope

By Keith Nallawalla On one of my recent trips to America I picked up a toy of the creature from Cut the Rope. I didn’t have the game at the time but was so happy to see a toy based on an iOS app that wasn’t Angry Birds that I couldn’t help but buy it. I forgot about it for a few months and then later remembered to buy the game and I got super hooked. A game that features that features cute monsters, candy and cutting stuff? This is basically all my favourite things rolled into one game. Basically this is a physics puzzle game where you use your finger (or stylus on Nintendo handhelds) to cut various ropes that attach to a piece of candy as it drops, floats or swings away from various obstacles and into the mouth of a cute green monster called Om Nom. The game starts off very easy as it shows you ropes on how to play it, but it gets increasingly difficult as more advanced mechanics are introduced. You score points for getting the candy into Om Nom’s mouth as quickly as possible and also by collecting up to three stars per level. If the candy hits an obstacle or goes flying out of the screen, Om Nom pulls a ridiculously cute expression of disappointment that sucks you into trying again. You can’t help but try again and again until you’ve finished that level. There have been a few sequels and level pack updates available, introducing new gameplay elements but I haven’t tried them, apparently they are also good. I have this game on my 3DS and iPhone. I think it controls better on the iPhone, it is also available on most other popular computer and mobile devices. 16

TRICK or TREAT? The McGangBang is the melding of a Double Cheeseburger and a Chicken and Cheese. The process is splitting the Double Cheeseburger in half and putting the Chicken and Cheese in between. Simple and delicious. Unfortunately McDonald’s Australia has ruined this by upping the price of both items because of the tedious ‘assembling’ process. Pfft. Self-assemble is your best option. I must warn you to watch out for the hot cheese though, burning can and sometimes does occur for those among you with slippery fingers. All the best things in life have some type of risk involved though right? After it is assembled, you look into its eyes and initially might find yourself intimidated by its appearance and if in public, you may be worried about the looks you may receive. Remind yourself people are just jealous about the beast you are about to devour. Wow, that first bite… indescribable. The crunch of the Chicken Burger, the juicy patties of beef. The mixture of the special McDonald’s Mayo and tomato sauce… the mouth exists for tastes of this magnitude. Savor every moment. Perfect for when you are out of your mind. Best to order by name to catch the reaction of the worker behind the counter. Gotta get your kicks somewhere right? That feeling that follows devouring the McGangBang though I won’t sugar coat. Self-loathing best describes the guilt that mixes its self in with digestion process as you realise the magnitude of what you’ve just consumed. You can feel the burger in your stomach as you realise why you are supposed avoid such guilty pleasures. “I should have got the Big Mac.” You think to yourself and promise yourself that next time you will. Sure. I’ve consumed five since I discovered the beautiful but evil McGangBang and I don’t doubt that number will grow with time. Not for the faint of heart or the small mouths but if you are up to the challenge I highly recommend. I Dub the McGangBang a TRICKY TREAT! By Nicole Daphne Wilson

YOUTH IN REVOLT

Intweviewed by Nicole Daphne Wilson How was Back Back Forward Punch formed? We started making music together in 2006 back when we all lived in Newcastle. Andy and John were both writing their own tracks, and Laura was recording vocals for both of them separately. Andy was writing eccentric electronic pop tunes, whilst John was writing breaks at the time. Eventually it made sense to combine their two talents, and so we ended up with this mix of techie theatrical dance pop that we started playing around Newcastle. We’ve grown up a lot musically since, but we still try and hold on to the carefree nature of that time. Tell us a bit about each member of Back Back Forward Punch. Laura is the lead singer and lyricist. She collects metallic gold clothing, loves Labrador puppies, and is an environmental scientist when she’s not doing music. Andy is the main song-writer and plays synths/keys in the band. He is the tallest and wears pointy shoes and bow ties, and is an electrical engineer by day. John does sound production wizardry on the tracks and Parmesan is his favourite type of cheese. He is a chemical engineer, so he takes the cake for the nerdiest job. When we perform live we also bring along the lovely Jo Walker, who sings backup like an angel, and has the most delightful English accent. Ask her to show you some ‘Environmental Dance’ when you see her. Describe your sound. Our set is diverse. Sometimes it’s fun up-beat nu-disco, sometimes it’s tough electro, but all the while we try to keep it classy yet quirky. Who inspires Back Back Forward Punch? We are inspired by solid grooves and stage presence so we look up to bands with amazing front ladies like Crazy P, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Gossip. We also love bands like Groove Armada, and the Chemical Brothers who are really versatile and don’t just stick to one genre of dance music. Who would you guys kill to colaborate with? Cut Copy circa 2004. They were a pretty important band for us at that time. What sets Back Back Forward Punch apart? We can on fit into small stages that other bands cannot, ...but still produce a massive sound. Also Andy sometimes dresses like an ice-cream man on stage, which we haven’t really seen anyone else do. What has been the highlight of Back Back Forward Punch’s musical career so far? Last week a clothing brand paid us in jumpers to use one of our new tracks in a promo. We’ve often been paid with beer, gratitude and sometimes money – but never jumpers before, so that was awesome. What are you guys working on at the moment? At the moment we have about 13 tracks almost ready for release, so we are trying to figure out what to do with all of them. We’ll probably record four this month and release them as an EP around October. What is on the cards for the future for Back Back Forward Punch? We’ve always had a dream of adding more members to the live show. We’ve got a second vocalist now, so perhaps a drummer, guitarist or bass player is on the cards if we can find the right people. Hit us up! What’s the ultimate goal? We would probably say our goal is to have lots of people (who we don’t know) like our music. Playing a major festival would be quite ultimate too. Also a few years ago we saw the Flaming Lips singer crowd surfing inside a giant blow-up bubble - We want to do that. It would be really fun to then take that bubble out on the ocean and run around on the water for a while. What does Back Back Forward Punch do during their down time? Is it all business, business, business or do you guys make sure you have a balance between work and play? When we get together at one of our houses, we tend to eat cheese, drink beer, and watch cartoons. We are totally addicted to Adventure Time at the moment! Afterwards, we speak to each other using quotes from the cartoons we have just watched. We also love going out to watch other local electronic acts play. It has been said that live performance is at the heart of Back Back Forward Punch, describe the Back Back Forward Punch live performance experience. We usually ease into the set with a few disco grooves, some electro hip-hop beats slide into the middle to get hips thrusting, then we round it all off with some quirky electro, all the while laced with sultry vocal harmonies, some fancy finger work on the keys from Andy, and a white picket fence out front.

YOUTH IN REVOLT

A poem that does not rhyme. By Robert Angelone

The bears are in their cages, the birds are locked in their nests. A sad portrait of wasted living. Existing in a diminished place, that clips your wings and files your teeth. Being young a time for escape. A temporary state of warfare between the body’s chemical mixtures and the stubborn putty of the brain. It is a carousel of fantasy. It is the vivid start of a dream before the memory becomes incoherent and murky. It is self destruction. Stain the skin with tattoos and pierce it with metal. We are the deliberate betrayal of authority. A beautiful mess of tangled lives. Complete with crushing hurt. The stabbing lies. It will break you. And when you lie in pieces, scattered across the floor, lies the greatest time for creation. There is no other way to feel it. So escape your mind, and don’t go searching. There can be no safety in such a glorious demise. We are the poems that do not rhyme. We are technicolour stories. We are living portraits of genetic artwork. Set fire in the streets. Drink the flames. Dance on the embers. Revel in the ashy smoke and never expect rain. How many of us can say we have truly lived? Look in the mirror and force a smile. We are unfinished. A fleshy map of extremes; of euphoria, and that lurking melancholia that feeds straight from the veins. Thriving off our demons. We are the greedy mice, from the cracks and corners. Who live large, and still dream of better. This is a drum-beat of regret. We should not want to live forever. The stars should never align, nothing should be perfect. It is better to stay muddled in nothingness. Stare into space with wonder, not knowledge. No hope. No future. Be everything, be nothing. Run in circles. Roll down hills. Stay the same. Leave the chaser for someone else. Live in the high rises of your mind, where there is no rent, where the clouds are white. Leave the lies on your lips. Compress these words into tablets that sit on your tongue. Acknowledge fear, and welcome it’s cold hands. Never run from it. Fear hides behind your eyelids when you are all alone. So be the person who sits in your mind. And the two of you will never meet. Be the bold. The exceptional. Shatter that face in the mirror. Let them die. Because you are better. You can be better. Be defined by your head and heart. Those few moments when they work together. And remember; the world is yours. And even that is not enough. 22

YOUTH IN REVOLT

The last thing you need is acid my dear. Just the other day I found myself so bored that after eating almost the entire contents of my fridge followed by a brief but passionate encounter with myself I started considering having my third shower of the day. Maybe it was the school holidays, maybe it was the lack of anything even remotely interesting on cable TV (there’s only so much Sex and the City reruns I can take) or maybe I was just bored with routine life, but in that moment I found myself daydreaming about taking another trip down the mysterious and mystical rabbit hole. More recently I have experimented with shrooms but let me tell you, acid and shrooms no matter what anyone says, is no hop, skip and a jump away from each other. It’s a mother fucking leap, a road trip across country. My first and only acid trip left me frightened and scared, I was in a bad state of mind lost in a city in any other state I would have known like the back of my hand. Despite my better judgement a few finger taps on my iPhone screen later the message was sent… ‘Do you know where I can get some acid?’ Anxiety soon followed as I began to reflect on my last trip down the mysterious, mystical and sometimes dangerous rabbit hole. I was in a ‘FUCK THE WORLD!’ type of mood due to a fight that I had, had earlier that day with my parents about being, oh would you believe it, ‘irresponsible and reckless’, the nerve! I’ll tell you what though, looking back on the experience, mixing acid with straight vodka and weed was a tad irresponsible and reckless, crazy even. As all the cool kids are saying these days though, ‘YOLO!’ However, That wasn’t my term of choice when flinders street station was glowing, swaying from side to side and pulsating simultaneously, when lions were jumping out at me from the table I was sitting at in Elizabeth Street McDonald’s, and it definitely wasn’t my term of choice when Dumbledore was chasing me down Degraves Street subway at 8am, through a sea of Pacman and Pacwoman wearing suits. By the time everything had turned black the only phrase I seemed to be able to manage was ‘This is not ok!’ – and it wasn’t. After this quick reflection I started to realise that at the moment between University, work and my writing commitments, I don’t have the time to lose my mind for a few hours, nor the 24 hour Xanax induced hibernation that followed my last trip. Shortly thereafter my strategically placed iPhone began to vibrate, ‘The last thing you need is acid my dear.’ And just like that my mind was made up... or was it? By Nicole Daphne Wilson

Lights, camera, review. By Nazanin Behbehani

Transamerica - Duncan Tucker (2005) Southern Californian Bree Osbourne, formerly Stanley Chupak, has finally received the news for which she has been waiting: she has been approved for male-to-female sexual reassignment surgery. But before Margaret, her therapist, will allow her to go through with the surgery scheduled in a week’s time, Bree has to deal with an unresolved problem from her past. Bree gets a telephone call from a seventeen year old man named Toby Wilkins, who is looking for Stanley, his biological father. Toby is in a New York jail, having been supporting himself by petty crime and hustling. Stanley/Bree knew nothing about Toby before the telephone call. Toby apparently is all alone in the world, with his mother having committed suicide and being estranged from his stepfather in Tennessee. As Bree masquerades as a Christian social worker, not telling him either of her true identity or her transgender status the story and Bree’s plan begin to unravel.

Ghost World - Terry Zwigoff (2001) Enid & and Rebecca are best friends having difficulties with the social attitudes of other people. After graduating high school they decide to get jobs and rent a house together. However this is made difficult when Enid finds out she’ll be attending Arts school over the summer in order to graduate and on top of that loses her job due to her anti-social behaviour. Meanwhile, Enid and Rebecca play a prank on Seymour, a middle-aged collector of vinyl records that also has difficulties with relationships. Seymour and Enid eventually become friends and as time goes by, Enid reaches maturity and develops a different view of life and Rebecca and Enid’s lives diverge. Based on a comic book of the same name the film received a highly positive reaction and was nominated for several awards including best actress for Thora Birch’s portrayal of Enid by The Toronto Film Critics Association.

Good Dick - Marianna Palka (2008) Good Dick is a modern fairy tale about a troubled, reclusive young woman and the persistent video clerk who draws her out of her claustrophobic world by starting up a unique courtship with her. The two become closer but the woman’s dislike for sex and resulting defences eventually drive them a part. What reasons for this strong distain for intimacy could there be? As the story delves deeper into the woman’s past, events are uncovered and dots begin to join up. The film concludes with a confrontation between the woman and her father after which the woman reunites with her video clerk lover. Good Dick is a truly unique and captivating story about love and intimacy and all the things that get in the way. I guarantee you will fall just as in love with their romance as they do with each other and you will be rooting for them right till the very end.

Alice,

YOUTH IN REVOLT

Sitting around the fire exhausted from setting up camp Matt suggests we take the mushrooms “Let’s get this party started.” He said with that look in his eye, the same look he gave me when I walked in on him and Sam having sex. He was up to something, I knew it. “I second that notion” said Johnny as he not so subtly removed his hand from Jess’. They rarely ever hold hands and when they do Jonny has this look on his face that conveys a level of discomfort usually reserved for pap smears and elevator farts. Jess seemingly un-phased thirded the notion, Sam reluctantly following suit, still in the shits over her and Matt’s spat that had seemingly gone unnoticed by everyone but me. With a nod from me the decision was unanimous and Sam half-heartedly walked over to our tent to grab them. As she did I could feel Matt’s stare burning into me, what was he looking at? I shot him a glare, he sneered and looked away. Sam handed us all ten shrooms each, I chucked five into my mouth followed by a swig of absinthe that Jess had brought along and stuffed the other five in my jacket pocket for later. What felt like an eternity later, but in actual fact was half an hour I was laying on the ground watching the stars dance, Matt had turned on the car and turned up the radio, whilst Johnny smoked a joint and Jess and Sam danced.

29

YOUTH IN REVOLT

Feeling so relaxed and content I closed my eyes and to my surprise felt myself drifting off only to be rudely awoken shortly after to Matt whispering in my ear “Let’s fuck.” “Seriously?” I said shocked. “I’m sick of Sam’s shit and honestly when’s the last time you had a root? I bet you’re dying for it.” Before I’d realised what I was doing my hand hit his face. “Dyke.” He spat and walked away. As I looked around to see who had seen what had happened I realised none of the others were in sight. I closed my eyes and laid back down only to be awoken again but this time by a scream, Jess’? I jumped up and ran in the direction of the scream to find Jess on the ground with her knickers around her ankles, tears streaming down her face and Matt standing over her doing up his pants. “Johnny…” Jess moped, and as I followed her glance there he was, standing there with a look on his face I couldn’t express in words, a look of hurt, betrayal, disgust, anger but laced with something else, something worse.

30

YOUTH IN REVOLT

I opened my mouth to say something, anything, when suddenly Johnny through himself against the ground with a massive amount of force. Jess screamed again and Matt turned away, towards me, crying. I’d never seen Matt cry. Again Johnny through himself against the ground, this time staining the dirt with blood. “Stop it Johnny.” I half screamed, half wept. “What are you doing?” Jess whimpered as once more Johnny through himself against the ground. Blood and dirt covering his face Johnny looked up and said in a voice that I swear was not his own “I’m trying to get as low as I feel.” 31

The Newsroom

The Newsroom is not exactly in line with the HBO shows we’ve come to know and love; there’s no gratuitous nudity, its absence of violence is noticeable, and the swearing is tame to say the least. So what are we left with? Talk. The most interesting thing about this show is the writing, Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, The Social Network) is the creator of this show and he has sprayed himself all over it. Sorkin’s writing style is very distinctive, full of quick-witted banter and what I like to call walk-n-talk, Sorkin is also prone to monologueing and he certainly lives up to his reputation in The Newsroom. Though in this case the monologues feel more like lectures and every character in the show has a soapbox to stand on. You could put that down to what the show is trying to say though, talking about journalism, truth, ignorance and politics, The Newsroom is out to explore and criticise it all, telling us the current state of things and constantly nagging us about how it should be. The show not only looks at journalism and politics, but also romance, though I think it is the weakest part of the show, and the portrayal of characters that are extraordinarily intelligent suddenly becoming jealous, flustered, buffoons when it comes to relationships, it could be done better. The thing I like the most about The Newsroom is the same as what I dislike the most, it’s idealistic and the writing is unrealistic, people just don’t talk like that. But I love that Sorkin isn’t afraid to let his views be known, and he has an amazing ability to draw emotion out of you whenever he wants is something I envy greatly. The acting in this show is without fault as far as I can see, packed full of fantastic actors both experienced and a few fresh faces for us to be surprised by. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Game of Thrones Epic is the first word that comes to mind when I’m asked to explain my obsession with Game of Thrones. That word is then followed by a deluge of words such as swords, sex, beasts, betrayal, deception, war, carnage, honour, pride, lust; I could go on for days. But what sits at the heart of this immense tale are family and the pursuit of power. Game of Thrones is a complex story that takes place in a vast land with an enormous cast of characters, but don’t for one moment think you will be confused. Adapted from the bestselling book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, this fantastical story is translated to screen beautifully and is accompanied by superb acting and stunning visual effects, it is exceptional storytelling and some of the best television you will ever see. Two series in you really have no excuse for avoiding Game of Thrones, but just in case you have here are some basics; in the land of Westeros there are seven kingdoms all ruled by the one king who sits upon the Iron Throne (a throne forged out of swords using dragons breath, it’s pretty cool). When the Iron Throne becomes vacant there are more than a few claiming to be king, there is a great insult to another family which decides to claim their own kingdom back, and war ensues. But that could all be trivial nonsense because beyond the wall there are supernatural rumblings that could devastate them all, in a game of thrones you win or you die but winter is coming and they may not have time for games at all. Game of Thrones is packed full of venomous and noble characters, as well as everything in between, not to mention the endlessly entertaining imp, Tyrion Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage, I would recommend you watch this show for his performance alone though I’m sure you will be enthralled by the world you find regardless.

YOUTH IN REVOLT

My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult 2003 My Sister’s Keeper is a 2004 novel written by New York Times Best Selling author Jodi Picoult. It tells the story of thirteen year old, Anna, who litigates her parents for medical emancipation, when she is expected to donate a kidney to her sister Kate who is dying from leukemia. Riffs in the family begin to show as Anna struggles to deal with her decision and the impact it has on the rest of the family. All is not what it seems though, as this story unravels we discover that there is more to Anna’s choice than meets the eye and that the bond between two sisters is unbreakable even under the most extreme circumstances. Now also a motion picture as well I highly recommend this read, but by all means have tissues handy.

The Sleepers Lorenzo Carcaterra 1995 This book explores some pretty full on stuff, it’s confronting, it’s doesn’t beat around the bush, it looks at how a single event can change an individual’s life forever and on a more personal level how it can change a person forever. You might need tissues for this one but you will also feel a range of other emotions while reading too, even laughter. Underneath all the seriousness what really is at the heart of this novel is friendship. The boys in this novel although they all deal with the event that shapes the course of their lives forever differently remain united by an unbreakable bond despite over time becoming very different people who under other circumstances may not interact. I really enjoyed both the book and the movie and I don’t want to give too much away but I tell you one thing, you won’t just read this book once. 39
