Doors open at Unity Hub @ Craig Park A brand new youth centre in Edmonton awaits you so come on in! Young people now have the youth centre of their dreams – a superb custom-built facility in Edmonton designed by young people for young people. This is ‘Unity Hub at Craig Park’ in Edmonton N18. This centre will establish friendship and ambition among young people and bring renewed hope and vigour to the area. Here young people aged 13-19 can learn new computer skills in the media suite; plan singing and dance performances in the studio, take on the climbing wall and enjoy cooking, sport, art and drama with friends.

Christian, one of the young people who witnessed the centre transformation for himself said: “I started coming to Craig Park Youth Centre when I was about 15. I knew about it but didn’t really know what went on there. So when I eventually went along with a football coach I quickly got involved in the different activities they had to offer and thought this place was fantastic. Now that it has been transformed into this first class facility there is so much more to be excited about so I would encourage other young people across the borough to come and take a look for themselves.”

www.enfield.gov.uk/youth

A team of experienced youth workers are ready to welcome young people and help them discover their skills and talents and plan and improve their job prospects. Some can take specialist courses learning to become youth leaders, others will be able to make videos and music, choreograph dance routines, write plays and perform them – it’s a place where young people can grow and mature, limited only by their own imagination. Visit www.enfield.gov.uk/youth or call 020 8807 9235 for more information.

Youth News The Secondary “Say It” event, organised by the Children’s Trust in May brought 52 school council representatives from 10 secondary schools across the borough to learn about youth democracy in Enfield and about the financial challenges faced by Enfield Council. Young people had the opportunity to ask direct questions to Councillors, Council directors and Enfield Youth Parliament members and contribute to workshops around the biggest issues facing young people such as youth unemployment, lack of apprenticeships and sporting opportunities. They were also given a virtual pot of £1million to spend on local authority services to understand the difficulty around prioritising budgets and services.

Say It Event

After lunch, the young people were treated to a surprise visit from two of Tottenham Hotspurs’ under 18 players, Harry Winks and Daniel Akindayini. The event finished with a discussion held by Doni Jones, Chair of Enfield Youth Parliament and Yousif Alawoad, Area Youth Forum member and deputy UK Youth Parliament member around opportunities available for young people to fully enable them to participate and engage in Enfield’s decision making process, namely through the Area Youth Forums and the elected Enfield Youth Parliament. If you too want your views to be heard join one of the four Area Youth Forums (AYFs). They meet monthly and any young person aged 11-19 (up to 25 with learning

difficulties or disabilities) can attend to voice their views and ideas. To find out more visit the Area Youth Forum page, under the ‘Get Involved’ tab at www.enfield.gov.uk/youth or speak with our youth participation team on 020 8379 1307/1308.

Summer Uni has been offering FREE summer activities for young people in Enfield for the last five years and we’re busy preparing for the launch of this year’s programme. We’re the Peer Motivators, young people who support and underpin all areas of the Summer Uni programme. We met members of the Area Youth Forums to tell them about what we do and what to look forward to in this year’s Summer Uni programme.

What is Summer Uni? Loads of free activities and workshops for young people in Enfield over the summer holidays. We start in the last week of July and finish with the Summer Uni Celebration event Thursday 29 August at the Millfield Theatre.

Get a qualification Get accredited You can gain a qualification simply by taking part in an activity that interests you and having your achievements accredited – that is recorded by a youth worker and recognised through a leading qualifications provider such as the AQA.

Our youth services team delivers a number of courses aimed at building young people’s confidence, skills and personal achievements. Here are a few examples and you can find out more on our website www.enfield.gov.uk/youth or you can Like Youth Enfield Facebook and follow @YouthEnfield on Twitter for the latest opportunities.

Leadership Academy The Leadership Academy gives young people opportunities to input their views and take responsibility to shape the services on offer for young people. The Academy also includes supporting young people to establish social enterprises, have a structured route into gaining a youth work qualification and being part of bringing peace to the post code conflicts via the series of Unity Group activities.

service managers in board meetings and we received great feedback.

As one Unity Youth Leader, Christian explains:

Other Unity Group members said:

“The Leadership Academy opened my eyes up to possibilities. I got the chance to attend a children services conference in Lincolnshire and the Houses of Parliament in London. This helped me to see that young people do have a lot of support in Enfield. I therefore decided to create a short video about the positive work Enfield Council has done to help young people along with the benefits their services bring in the community. With the help of a friend we finished and finalised the edit in three days. This was showcased to the youth

The whole experience gave me the confidence to set up my own business and so far it is going great! Having the opportunity to put in action the skills I picked up through the Academy, such running meetings and speaking to professionals, is very satisfying.”

“I just recently joined Unity and to be honest it has been an amazing experience. I’ve made a few friends and I enjoy hanging out with other young people. I’m a person who really loves working with people and I believe in a unified community. Being part of the Unity Group has given me the opportunity to be a part of events that bring the community together.” (Nomonde)

“Wow if it wasn’t for my Unity involvement my CV would look so plain but now I can stand out from the crowd.” (Leon)

Motor Skills Maintenance The Motor Skills Maintenance course, run in partnership with North London Garages (NLG) gives young people aged 16-19 a Motor Vehicle Maintenance AQA qualification and the chance to apply for an apprenticeship with NLG.

There have already been some great results with one confirmed apprenticeship and two interviews with local garages. Another two participants joined other training providers to build on their newly acquired skills. Jake was very happy to be on this course. He said: “I’ve always had interests in motor vehicle mechanics and learning with North London Garages with the additional support from Connexions was a brilliant experience. I really enjoyed the practical hands on learning in the garage and wanted to move on to further learning opportunities, ideally through an apprenticeship. With the help of my Connexions personal advisor I have already achieved so much and feel confident about achieving my goal.”
