Community Investment Report

Thank you for giving our kids a chance to be leaders. Youth Resources positively impacts over 800 young adults each year by providing opportunities for them to lead, serve and change our community.

At Youth Resources, our mission is to engage youth in leadership and community service. In 2015, our team grew stronger, our supporters hit it out of the park and all four of our programs were at capacity. Our students served over 8,000 hours with more than 100 local agencies and groups. They also planned and implemented 63 service projects with their peers. 372 individuals, foundations, and corporations supported our mission this year. And with all this amazing support, we raised more than $430,000 to sustain the Teen Advisory Council, TEENPOWER, Make A Difference Grants, and Vanderburgh County Teen Court. That’s $49 every single hour! We kept YR running efficiently...73% Program Services, 12% Development, 14% Management & General...and all the while, our board members guided and supported us along the way. See page 23 for their names, and if you know a YR board member please thank them for their service on behalf of our students, staff and community. All told, we’ve now worked with over 148,875 students and funded more than 3,251 service projects in 6 counties within our community. Our alumni continue to give, serve, and lead in education, healthcare, business, law, nonprofits, tech and more. For their stories, browse the following program pages. 2015 was our biggest year yet. Thank you to every single one of you who helped make it all possible. Laura Ferguson Executive Director YR Alumna, Class of 2007

Teen Advisory Council “Involvement with TAC has absolutely gotten me out of my shell and taken me to a place where I’m comfortable speaking with and leading not only peers but adults too.”

Teen Court “I have benefitted from every session of Teen Court that I’ve attended. This program has motivated me to become more involved in my community beyond high school. Not only I am helping my community through Teen Court, my community is helping me become a better person.”

...from our youth.

Make A Difference Grants Youth Resources’ founding program and grant-making arm awards grants of up to $750 for youth-led community service projects.

Evansville Teachers Association

The Hudson Family, Grant Recipient

SINCE 1987

Jossie’s dad worked for many years at Harwood and Cedar Hall schools, where money is tight for many families. Jossie recognized that many of the kids at Cedar Hall do not get opportunities to go to skill camps, like she had growing up. After the idea of a camp was born, funding was needed to provide enough basketballs for each child, so we applied to YR for a MAD Grant. Jossie said that seeing the kids eyes light up and big smiles on their faces when they showed up for a camp day made the whole experience exceptional. There are big ripple effects from MAD Grants. You never really know where they will end or how much they change lives in big or small ways. Recipients learn valuable lessons as they use their resources to contribute to society. Carey, Tracey and Jossie Hudson made Jossie’s Game Up skills camp come to life through funding from a Make A Difference Grant. This family affair involved 38 youth volunteers and impacted 95 participants.

148,875 local children and teens have been involved in 3,251

youth-led service projects and have received over $757,000 in grants from Youth Resources.

Teen Advisory Council TAC is a peer-led group of high school students who involve themselves in our community through service and fundraising events, leadership training, and civic engagement.

Claire Apuan, Alumna I absolutely would have considered myself a shy person going into high school. I really wanted to meet new people, but I never knew what to say. I was always the person that would wait around in the background awkwardly. Through TAC, I feel like I had the opportunity to throw myself into positive social situations that helped me push my limits and grow as an individual.

The biggest impact on my life from TAC has been the people that I met. I really found a place in TAC where I could share my excitement about events that we planned and in general about serving the community. I found some really great role models that have broadened my perspective on life and supported me in my ambitions and hobbies alike. I would tell anyone thinking about getting involved in YR to just do it! There’s really nothing to lose and everything to gain. Claire was involved in YR’s programs from 2010-2014. She is a sophomore at Dartmouth College and plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering.

TEENPOWER TEENPOWER is building a culture and network of drug-free young leaders by promoting educated decision-making, strong character, leadership development and community involvement.

Ben Walden, Current Student The best part of TEENPOWER are the connections and relationships. TEENPOWER takes a group of strangers and grows them into a tight-knit community. That’s what brings me back with anticipation every year. I hope my efforts as a Youth Staffer inspire TEENPOWER participants to stay drug-free, be strong leaders and encourage their friends to make healthy choices. I also hope that I have been able to make a difference in the attitudes of others with my own. I like to think that by spreading the positivity of TEENPOWER, others may become more positive themselves. Anyone who has made a commitment to TEENPOWER in the past, including myself, can attest that their commitment has been very rewarding and a wonderful way to give back to the community. Ben has been involved with Youth Resources since 2013. He is a senior at Central High School and is still deciding where he would like to attend college. In the meantime, he is an active volunteer through TAC, TEENPOWER and Teen Court, an accomplished musician and an excellent student.

13 grants awarded to student-led TEENPOWER Clubs for prevention service projects

286% increase in participation at TEENPOWER conferences over the last eight years

AT TEENPOWER 2015 390 high school and middle school students representing 38 schools and 5 counties were empowered to lead positive, healthy lifestyles.

Teen Court Teen Court is a diversion program for first-time juvenile offenders and youth volunteers who participate in real juvenile hearings and encourage each other to make positive choices.

Ray Dudlo, Attorney Volunteer After moving to Evansville in 2011, I started volunteering with Youth Resources’ Teen Court. When I sat in on a jury deliberation I was impressed to see the student volunteers take the case so seriously. They took their time to weigh the appropriate response which focused on helping the juvenile offender. As an attorney, I cannot help but notice those student volunteers that really love taking on the attorney and judge roles. So many of the youth volunteers start off as timid and uncertain but leave as confident leaders.  I believe Teen Court provides a tremendous positive impact for all the youth that are involved. This program is doing great things for the community and our youth. Ray has volunteered with Teen Court since 2011. He practices family law at Bamberger Foreman Oswald & Hahn and is an active volunteer with the Volunteer Lawyer Program. He lives in Evansville with his wife, Trisha, an attorney who also volunteers with Teen Court, and their daughter.

JUSTICE THROUGH SERVICE Since the first official hearing in 2005, Teen Court has involved over 1,200 youth volunteers who have served 6,015 hours of community service through Teen Court hearings. As part of their sentencing, juvenile offenders have completed 2,481 hours of community service.

Robert “Scooter” Tiemann was an advocate for youth and a long-time volunteer with Youth Resources’ TEENPOWER and Teen Advisory Council programs. We were, and still are, broken-hearted at his unexpected passing on June 10, 2013. The Scooter Scholarship Fund was founded in memory of Scooter, who would pay the registration fee for students to attend Youth Resources’ TEENPOWER Conferences.

Mentors: Our Monthly Giving Program TEENPOWER alumna Chelsi Carter describes why she chooses to donate monthly to Youth Resources.

How did you get involved with Youth What made you decide to make a Resources? monthly gift to YR? I started YR programming with TEENPOWER. I went to High School TEENPOWER as a freshman, came back the following year as Youth Staff, eventually became College Staff, then Adult Staff.

Every month when I look at my bank statement, I think of all of the adults and peers at YR who have ever helped me. Giving a monthly gift reminds me of my responsibility to pay it forward.

What part of YR’s work gives you the What impact do you hope your monthly gift will achieve? most satisfaction? I know firsthand that Youth Resources changes lives because it changed mine. Because of Youth Resources I discovered my passion for serving others and now currently work at a nonprofit - Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Ohio Valley. To me, the meaning of life is to find your gift, and the purpose of life is to give it away. Without Youth Resources I would have never found what I believe is my gift of helping people, and that is something for which I will forever be grateful.

I am certain that through YR my gift will continue to serve, reach, and impact the community through young leaders.

Chelsi has been involved with Youth Resources since 2002. She continues to actively volunteer with YR and is a well-loved mentor to our youth. Chelsi lives in Evansville, works as Chief Development Officer at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Ohio Valley, owns Sunshine Juice Co., and volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters, among many other organizations.

Becoming a Mentor is easy! Use the card in the back of this investment report or set up your secure monthly gift online at www.youth-resources.org.

Alumni Spotlight Teen Court and Teen Advisory Council alumna Hannah Apuan highlights the role Youth Resources played in her life during high school and how it continues to impact her as a college student.

What skills did you learn during your involvement with YR? Youth Resources constantly put me in positions of leadership where I would practice my public speaking skills. For example, when I was an attorney at Teen Court, I would have to question the defendant and think on my feet. In the opening and closing statements, I would quickly synthesize a short speech summarizing my argument. At first, I was always very nervous and shaky, but over time I improved to the point that I was rarely anxious.

What is your favorite YR memory? During TAC’s Career Fair in 2013, a chemical engineer in the STEM group showed us a little pastel-colored piece of plastic shell. He said that what he had in his hands would seem very familiar in the next few years but he had to remain confidential about it. A few months later, I saw the release of the iPhone 5C, which had the same pastel plastic shell. Especially because I am a tech major, I thought it was amazing to learn the cuttingedge of the industry, which, in this case, originated

in Mount Vernon, Indiana. I would not have had that opportunity without the Teen Advisory Council.

How has YR impacted your life? YR has impacted my life so that I feel more confident about myself. In YR’s programs, I met students and advisers who were friendly, and we all supported each other. I gained feelings of self-worth, community, and self-esteem because of YR.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about getting involved in YR? Do it! If you don’t think you have enough time; you always have enough time! I hope that is a life skill that everyone learns: if you make it important to yourself, you always have time. Hannah was involved in YR’s programs from 20102014. She is a sophomore at the University of Denver and plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Arts in German Language and Literature.
