CREATIVE DRIVER This month I had a bit of a breakthrough, and truth be told I didn’t even realise I had a breakthrough until I read this quote: “When the time comes for you to make a change or grow, the universe will make you so uncomfortable you will eventually have no choice.” In other words, when your whole world feels like its getting flipped upside down understand that it doesn’t mean you’re falling apart. Instead know that only bigger and better things are coming your way. So keep on keeping on....follow your vision, never the money.

#ALS CHALLENGE #ALSIceBucketChallenge

About 6 months ago, Neknominations, a drinking challenge that encouraged friends to chug a beer or two, was the only thing on your Facebook Newsfeed. We all know that nothing ends well with alcohol and this game quickly got out of hand, unfortunately ending in a total of five deaths. Introducing: the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The idea is similar to Neknominations, but the nominee has to pour a bucket of ice water over their head within 24 hours and, if incomplete, must donate $100 to the ALSA. Of course, there are always haters but in this case, there shouldn’t be and the facts prove it all. Pete Frates, an ALS patient, started this challenge and to this day it has been completed by everyone ranging from billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg to Fashion

sensations like Anna Wintour to famous A-listers and all your Facebook friends. This isn’t only just raising awareness; the campaign is a monstrous success with donations. In fact, ALSA issued this statement on their page: “As of Tuesday, August 26, The ALS Association has received $88.5 million in donations compared to $2.6 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 26). ” That is seriously amazing. Whether you’ve just dumped ice water on your head, if you’ve donated, or if you’ve done both, you’ve raised awareness and are helping find the cure for ALS. Good on ya!

RING THE SCHOOL BELL!

A BACK-TO-SCHOOL SOCIAL MEDIA GUIDE @AGNESWONG_

I

A I D E M

t’s that time of year again… It’s time to go back to school! Don’t worry; I know exactly how you feel – Homework? Class? Exams?! And despite the fact that I woke up at 7 a.m. every day this summer, every 8:30 a.m. class will still be too early for me. With Wi-Fi available in almost every building, social media is a constant in every classroom or social setting. We know that social media blunders can seriously come back to haunt you, so we’ve prepared a guide to help you with your social media etiquette.

L A I C O

S

1. Don’t “friend” everyone in the “Class of 2018” Facebook group. When you’re just entering university, joining the Facebook group for your class may be a good idea. Here, you can stay updated on school news or ask any questions you may have. However, it is NOT a good idea to send a friend request to all 4,000 people in the group. You don’t want to be that person – get to know them in real life first!

6

The Youzus Report

2. Connect with your roommate on social media. Send your roommate a message on Facebook to coordinate move-in times and items to brings, but don’t send a friend request, follow them, and subscribe to them all at the same time. You can creep them, but don’t be obvious about it, because that’s just creepy!

3. Don’t post your class schedule. I’m sure you’re all too familiar with those people who post “Hey everyone, this is my schedule! Does anyone have any classes with me??” There’s no need to show off how light or heavy your course load is. Just wait until your first day to see whom your classmates are. 4. Follow your school pages. Liking your school’s Facebook page and following them on Twitter could prove to be really resourceful. Especially on snow days when classes are cancelled! 5. Don’t add your teachers on Facebook. This just isn’t professional. You don’t want your teacher/ professor seeing everything that goes on in your life when you still have to sit in his Monday morning 8:30 lecture about integration by substitution. If you’re really dying to add your super cool prof on Facebook, wait until you’re sure you won’t be in his class ever again. 6. Don’t post inappropriate pictures. Partying is common when you’re in school, but posting pictures associated with drinking won’t be cool when recruiters find you on social media and you lose a job opportunity. 7. Don’t trash talk. Posting statuses or tweeting about how annoying your roommate or teacher is will come back to haunt you at the most inopportune times. They will see it, and it will not end well. It also looks immature – be courteous and take the high road, my friends. 8. Don’t post every little detail about your life. No one needs to know everything that happens while you’re away at school. Sure, promote events now and then, but you don’t need to tell people how much work you have to do. Everyone is busy and swamped with work, and your complaints on social media may just seem like a cry for attention. 9. Use your real name. Some people use different names on social media for fear of identity theft, and then there are the people who use different names because they are just plain annoying. Yes, I’m talking about those people whose last name on social media is the first two letters of their real last name. Don’t do that. Make sure you can be found easily – social media done right could be advantageous for you. A special tip from the EIC: Stay updated on social media by getting a book (not a real book) that has a hole inside to fit your phone. This way, you’ll never be bored again in class. ;) See you all on campus!

FROM AROUND THE SOCIAL MEDIA GLOBE,

MEET THE EXPERT: BOBBY UMAR

The ultimate manifestation of our mission was with our recent conference Discover Your Personal Brand, held Aug 16 (www.raeallan.com/dypb), where we had 40+ experts, 8 workshops, 5 panels and over 300 people learn how to forge an authentic leadership path of passion and purpose. I love what I do and I do what I love! My definition of success is not revenue based but rather to inspire and empower 1 million hearts.

Why do you think social media is an effective tool in developing one’s personal brand? Which platform do you think is the most effective in doing so? Tell us a little about yourself and about your inspiration with Raeallan. I am a professional speaker with a focus on Heart-based leadership. I am represented by the National Speakers Bureau and my expertise is in Personal Branding, Social Media and Networking/Building Relationships. I started Raeallan about 7 years ago and much of it has evolved over the years. I still do training and now I do more writing and tweeting along with the speaking. However, the big change has been my Why, which is ‘There Are Lost Leaders Everywhere’. The idea behind this is that whereever I have gone, I meet people who feel lost professionally, personally, academically and more - and I say that it’s okay to feel lost, but it’s not okay to do little about it. So this Why leads to our Vision, Mission and How. It’s a powerful catalyst for everything we do at Raeallan. It demonstrates the pain I’m trying to solve, the target who I pursue and how I focus all of our activities.

The Youzus Report

Social Media has given the individual, along with organizations or small businesses, a voice that is now amplified and can reach globally. It has given people a chance to share their story and build their brand. Ultimately social media allows us all to create legacy and impact. Part of your personal brand is delivering on a promise. So social media is a fantastic tool to share your expertise, ideas and more. The culture is ingrained that when one wants to learn about someone or something, they will look it up on the internet. With that, what shows up via your social media outlets is the first impression we have of you.

The platform that is most effective really depends on your target, your purpose and what you want to accomplish. If you want to build a cake decorating business and many people are on Pinterest, you have to consider being there. You have to be on Facebook because it has the 65% penetration and 85% reach and no social network is even close. However, I will say that Twitter for me has been a game changer and it can be for so many. Twitter, not Google, is where the world goes to for the most immediate information about anything, whether it’s the World Cup, an election, or a world event. Twitter is where we go for thought leadership on any topic, whether it’s fitness, finances, or leadership. Finally, Twitter brings out the best in us with a culture of transparency, where responsiveness and accessibility is garnered throughout the platform. This accessibility gives people and consumers fantastic new powers.

What is the best advice you can give to people looking to network? Make sure you have a fantastic online presence. Make sure you ask for help and support to be a better networker because we have deal with people and deliver presentations the rest of our lives. So it is worthwhile to invest in becoming a better connector. Need help? Check out my new ebook called “How to Network Anytime Anywhere with Anyone” here: www.networkanytime.com. Finally learn to follow-up with gratitude, value and build the relationship. 15% of people usually get my card, 4% will follow-up with me, but only 0.4% will actually create a deep authentic connection with me. Which person do you want to be?

How do you create a balance between your offline and online

lives?

We should use technology and online tools to enhance our offline lives. If you can respect and understand that, you are halfway there. Nobody achieves balance, but we strive for that balance and the journey is part of the reward. I try to make sure that my time online optimizes my personal mission and when I can leverage people, tools and technology I do. I have also learned to systematize some of what I do. Finally I learned to say no, because saying no to some new opportunities is really saying yes to current priorities.

BEST SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGEMENT TOOLS OF 2014 Whether you’re a large corporation or a small biz, social media presence should be a pretty high priority on your marketing agenda. Having a regular posting schedule and analytics platform to see the results of your efforts are critical to the success of any social media campaign. Lucky for us, there are some great social media management tools out there that can help us achieve social media nirvana. #AskYouzus. This month @corinnefayfay asked us: What’s a good social media management platform for a growing start-up? Here’s our top 5 pick of the moment.

1. BUFFER Buffer is a quick and easy way to schedule content for Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Think of it as a virtual queue that allows you to maintain a regular posting schedule throughout the week without needing to micro-manage each delivery time. You can also manage multiple accounts and access quick analytics!

2. HOOTSUITE

powerful and effective filters that allow you to keep your focus where it matters.

4. IFTTT Standing for “IF This, Then That”, IFTTT is a powerful tool that functions like a recipe and will save you a heck of a lot of time. You can connect any major network to IFTTT and automate sharing on any social media platform based on an action that has occurred. For example, if you just uploaded a new blog post, IFTTT would automatically post a tweet, Facebook post, or whatever you desire. Best part? It works well with Buffer and Hootsuite.

5. SOCIALOOMPH SocialOomph adds a little oomph to your life as a social media manager. You can use the dashboard to combine all your social channels to schedule posts and monitor activity, AND it can auto-follow your new followers on Twitter. Kudos to the people who developed these amazing social media management tools! If you’re tech-savvy and need some inspiration on a new project, make a platform that can more easily manage Instagram, because we really need one. We promise you’ll get a full-page feature in The Youzus Report.

Hootsuite is the most popular social media management tool and it can be used for scheduling content, monitoring conversation, and tracking campaign results. It is compatible with almost all social media networks, and offers different packages tailored to each type of user. Got a question about social media that you’d like

3. TWEETDECK Although focused on (and owned by) Twitter, TweetDeck is a great way to schedule tweets and stay up to date on your notifications. It has 10

SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE RUNWAY @AGNESWONG_

How Social Media Revolutionized The Fashion Industry September is upon us, and for us fashion frenzies, it only means one thing: Fashion Week. Soon, our Facebook and Instagram newsfeeds, and Twitter timelines, will be filled with photos fresh off the runway, accompanied by the hashtag #SS15. Today, fashion show VIP guests are no longer those bigwigs sitting in the front row, but Internet users crowded around the live stream on their laptops. Without a doubt, social media is being a more integral part in the fashion industry, but this wasn’t always the case. For a long time, the fashion industry had maintained exclusivity. Unlike businesses in other industries that readily embraced social media marketing when game-changers like Facebook rolled out, the fashion industry was fashionably late to the party. It either adopted one-way communication via RSS feeds for sales and promotions, or stayed out of the social scene entirely. Many fashion retailers believed that social media marketing would weaken their relationships with customers, but the fact is, by using social media, these brands can capture a large audience and reignite brand passion and customer loyalty. The onset of social media has had the powerful effect of changing the relationship between fashion companies and consumers from master and servant, to peer and peer. They understand that social media marketing is needed to engage the younger demographic and create conversation. Having the approval of Vogue’s EIC Anna Wintour may remain as one of the most important accolades for any designer, but undeniably, bloggers are stealing the spotlight from fashion glossies. Editors used to have the loudest voice when it came to whether a designer’s collection would take off, but now, regular every day 16

The Youzus Report

people can join in on the conversation on Twitter; hashtags like #SS15 create online fashion communities. Instead of using fashion magazines for inspiration, fashionistas turn to online options like Pinterest, bloggers, and apps. Although not all fashion houses have joined the social party, some have welcomed it with open arms by launching campaigns of their own. In 2010, Louis Vuitton broadcasted their ready-to-wear fashion show exclusively to their Facebook followers, and Dior has used the hashtag #IconicColours to build momentum prior to the launch of a new makeup line. Perhaps the most noteworthy is Marc Jacobs’ Daisy Marc Jacobs Tweet Shop from earlier this year. Instead of trading in dollars, Marc Jacobs traded with social media currency. Fans who posted with the hashtag #MJDaisyChain on Instagram, Twitter, or any other platform, received a free perfume sample, and at the end of the week, the most creative post received a free Marc Jacobs handbag. Social media revolutionized the fashion industry in the sense that it gives us a glimpse into the previously shrouded world of glamour. Instagram and Twitter let us see the backstage madness of a fashion show and daily lives of seemingly untouchable models, designers, and editors. Stacey Bendet, the designer of fashion brand Alice + Olivia, is a great example; she posts to Instagram photos of her outfits and glam events she attends, but also photos of her every day life with her kids and yoga practice. EIC of Lucky Magazine, Eva Chen, tweets about everything from her obsession with The Bachelor to her approval of mom jeans. It’s true that once you know the story behind something, it becomes more compelling. Social media has done this for the fashion industry, and it’s a kind of revolution that doesn’t come with a hefty price tag (unlike Phoebe Philo’s handbags for Celine).

TIM’S DARK ROAST BY @PRIYAAMM

E

very Canadian’s favourite coffee place has topped our #doingitright list this issue. Tim Horton’s did something so enticing, horrific and incredibly genius at the same time that just blew us away. In honour of the introduction of the new dark roast coffee to its menu, they did something that got everyone pretty excited…

18

The Youzus Report

T

im Hortons rolled out the new blend in an effort to satisfy customers’ “evolving tastes”, and they made sure their customer’s were fully immersed in the experience. A location in L’IlePerrot, Que was painted black inside & out and the lights turned off, leading curious customers into the dark in an effort to amplify their sense of taste. Customers approached the blackened Tim Horton’s filled with suspense and curiousity as to what was going on; some walked away, while the daring came inside. Lost in a sea of darkness, they toppled over staff who wore night-vision goggles to gauge customers’ reactions. Some surprised and others scared, customers stumbled their way to the till, where they were carefully handed a cup of the chain’s new blend before the lights were turned on. This smart move was a proven fact as the company told, according to their research, roughly half of the coffee drinkers in Canada and the U.S. had a dark roast when they last had a cup of coffee. The new blend offers “hints of citrus, cocoa and earthy tones with a rounded body,” stated by the company in a news release. The new addition, made from Arabica beans, marks the first time its restaurants have offered any coffee apart from its usual blend in the chain’s 50-year history. The idea of ultimate physical experience of eliminating the sense of sight and maximizing the sense of taste is brilliant. They put an entertaining spin on generic advertising by engaging their audience. The video, which had over 1 million views not only helps boost sales for its new menu item, but creates buzz about Tim Horton’s originality used in the creative display. But this wasn’t the first innovative showcase they put on for their customers. The Oakville, Ontario based doughnut giant marked its 50th anniversary earlier this year by erecting in Toronto a temporary recreation of its first store. It also partnered with CIBC last month to offer a “Double Double Visa Card.” This is the first time the restaurant has introduced a new coffee brew and we won’t doubt there will be a few rounds of #TimsDark roast in our office for their great campaign. Try it today and tweet us @youzus_inc to let us know what you think! @YOUZUS_INC

HOW TO TAKE YOUR ONLINE CONNECTIONS

TO

REAL LIFE RELATIONSHIPS? @VIVIANAMY

W ith today’s technology, it’s obvious that we live in a connected world. Let’s see here… 1,340 friends on Facebook, a couple thousand followers on Twitter, and 500+ connections on LinkedIn. But what do these numbers mean? What’s the point in making all these connections?

In this competitive world, who you know can honestly make the biggest difference when you’re searching for a job. Now, with social media, it’s a little easier to connect with important professionals in your industry than it was a decade ago. But the real problem is: How do you turn those online connections into real world connections? Here are some tips to get you started: 1. Determine your goal. Figure out whom you should reach out to by deciding what type of relationship you would like to achieve by making the connection. Whether it’s for business or personal connections, narrowing it down will make things a lot easier.

out! Start by going through your LinkedIn connections and shoot them a LinkedIn Mail to invite them to chat over coffee. For Twitter, you can organize some Twitter lists to make it easier for you to target and keep track of the people you’d like to connect with.

2. Consider what you have to offer. What unique value can you bring into the relationship? Knowing what you can offer or how you can benefit the person you’d like to get to know in real life can make you more successful in creating the connection..

5. Join AND participate in Twitter Chats, Facebook Groups, and LinkedIn Groups. You wouldn’t want it to be a one-way conversation because that just defeats the whole purpose in creating a deeper connection. Try asking thought-provoking questions, or participating in group conversations. Just keep the back-and-forth ball rolling.

3. Give, give, and give, before you receive. Most likely than not, the person you’d like to meet in person will have some sort of significance. So let’s be real here, ain’t nobody got time these days. To reach these busybodies, offer what you’ve got to create value for yourself in their lives. 4. Start engaging. Now that you know your goal and your importance, it’s time reaching 20

The Youzus Report

6. Be inviting. If you know that you’ll be joining an upcoming conference, let your connections know on LinkedIn by giving a little background info about the event, update your Facebook status about it, and (obviously) tweet about it! This way, you can ask to meet up with individuals who are also attending the event with a more casual and approachable tone.

“MTV, Welcome to My World.” It’s Beyonce’s World! Beyonce’s World. Her recent closing performance at the MTV VMA’s was an immaculate full blown medley from her recent, self-titled album. Without a fail, The Queen Bey entranced the audience as celebrities Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Jason Derulo and Jordin Sparks couldn’t help but whine to ‘Drunk In Love’. This lady has got it going on.

spectacularly FLAWLESS performance. 15 minutes of Beyonce shaking her tail feather like no tomorrow. She has definitely earned the title Queen and will forever be rockin’ the Queen status for the #YouzusCrew.

If you missed it, you can watch the performance here.

Whate skyroc

FEATURE OF THE MONTH:

SOARING HIGH

Skyrocket is a digital company is making waves in Vancouver. We were lucky enough to sit down with Mo Dhaliwal, Director of Strategy to learn more and see what else they have in store! Interview by @pujster Tell us a bit about Skyrocket and it’s mission At Skyrocket, we craft brands and build digital products that improve the lives of the people they touch. What does this mean? Essentially, we create digital communications that are rooted in strategy, intelligence, design and technology. Our added magic is that we are humanists and we like to inject a bit of emotion into every thing we do – use our work to bring people together and connect in meaningful ways. Our work manifests itself in the form of branding, web experiences and apps. However, the “real” work is understanding what our clients are trying to accomplish, who they are trying to reach and why, and then we bring forward all of our capabilities to make that happen. How did you get started? What are your next steps? We got started when I met my partner a few year’s ago, Skyrocket’s Creative Director, Michael Parks. He is ridiculously talented and is the best combination of old-school typography purist and newschool digital experience designer, all wrapped up into one burly South African package. I’ve always been good at connecting the dots, forwards and backwards. When I met Mike, I knew we needed to work together and make beautiful things happen for our clients. We’re looking forward to meeting more people who have an inspiring purpose – this gives us the fuel and excitement we need to do our best work. As one of the founders of VIBC, how did this idea come to be? Do you see this growing outside of Vancouver in the near future? When I started the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration (VIBC), it was another scenario of wanting to connect the dots. I saw the disconnection and siloed communities in what is supposedly a mecca of multiculturalism. So, I thought we should take the biggest and boldest cultural form I’m familiar with (bhangra, of course) and use it as a thread to stitch our community together in interesting ways. The result is that 10 years later we have a celebration of interculturalism, the largest bhangra festival in North America and continue to produce work not found anywhere else in the world. What’s your favourite social media platform? Facebook is still my thing (call me old-school?). I like the immediacy of Twitter for certain things, and I get some of my most interesting business content and connections on LinkedIn… but, I have the most fun on Facebook.

Go outside of the box when it comes to your friends. Meet new people and add them on Facebook. You never know when you’re going to end up having a class with them.

Remember, being nice is important, and that includes on social media. Take time to compliment your friends, share funny stories, and wish them a Happy Birthday.

Tweet your school and see if there are any upcoming volunteer opportunities. It will build your resume and get you ready for what is next in life!

You’re using your phone to much! Try having lunch without it once a week and enjoy the moments in person rather than behind a screen.
